Grenfell speaks up

MEMBERS of the Grenfell community and services from around the region were at Taylor Park on Thursday, September 18 for the Grenfell Voices Against Violence’s first Free Family Fun Day.

The Family Fun Day was aimed at allowing families to have a fun day out while also sharing ways in

which community members can find out about the services available to people experienced family or domestic violence.

Grenfell Voices Against Violence’s April Hedley said the family fun day was fantastic and well supported by community members and a range of community services.

With services coming from Grenfell, Forbes and Cowra, Ms

Hedley said it allowed them to network and share details so they can refer people in need to the best suited community service within the region.

Ms Hedley said events such as this are really important for the community and service organisations as it allows everyone to come together and share what they do and create a strong community feeling.

“Out here in the country, when everyone bands together for something, it really goes off and really makes a strong impact,” Ms Hedley said.

Along with being able to find out some of the health and community services available in the region, there was a free sausage sizzle and a range of fun activities for kids to take part in.

DOUBLE AUCTION

Members of the Voices Against Violence hosted a successful Free Family Fun Day.

Caragabal Public School has a top week

CARAGABAL PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER for Term 3, Week 9

From Mr Jones

The sheep races were a great success!

It was heartwarming to see Caragabal students assisting preschoolers with the lolly drop.

A big thank you to everyone who helped in organising this wonderful community event.

In Week 9, K-1 students showcased their multiplication skills in the classroom, I was very impressed!

Nic energetically led an AFL clinic focused on learning the skill of drop punting.

April and Ed ran the breakfast club this week, which is excellent for developing their leadership abilities!

Additionally, students completed their Semester 2 student voice surveys, offering some fantastic ideas that will be put into action.

School Captain’s Report

Friday September 19 was Western. Eddie, Matilda, Indi and I are competing in the N and E Austen relay against Quandi and some other schools. We are hoping to make it to western as well.

Even if we don’t make it (or beat Quandi) we will still be proud of our achievement to make as far as Western athletic trials.

All the 2-6s are all getting excited about our camp next term.

I picked out some fun activities that we might do there.

We might also ask if we are allowed to make a road trip playlist!

Celebrating NAICOC Day

Grenfell will be celebrating NAIDOC Day tomorrow, Friday, September 27 and the community is invited to help celebrate.

NAIDOC will be celebrated at Taylor Park from 10am starting with the Welcome to Country and will have a range of activities, dances, and arts and crafts on offer.

Weddin NAIDOC assistant secretary Julie Gilmore said there will be dancers from Condobolin, along with schools from around the Weddin Shire singing songs in language as well as various arts and crats available.

There will be a Bush Tucker BBQ which will feature kangaroo, crocodile and emu on offer, as well as normal sausages.

Ms Gilmore said they will be joined by a range of differ-

ent services who will hosting stalls including the SES, the Salvation Army, the Cowra Neighbourhood Centre and Boys to the Bush. The Welcome to Country will be done by students from Grenfell Public School and The Henry Lawson High School.

Ms Gilmore said they would like to thank the Grenfell Men’s Shed for cooking the BBQ, with the BBQ coming from the Grenfell Lions Club. She encourages the community to come down to Taylor Park and help them celebrate Indigenous Culture.

Ms Gilmore said the Weddin Shire Council has been on board and very supportive of the event, and the Grenfell NAIDOC Day features a good collection of community groups that come together with open arms for their celebration.

Weddin Health Council update on MPS extensions

FOLLOWING a chance meeting with the Federal Member for the Riverina Michael McCormack, Peter Moffitt (chair of Weddin Health Council), and Health Councillor

Peter Spedding, discussions were held regarding the local hospital where Mr McCormack was updated on the lack of progress with the extensions to Grenfell MPS - as reported in last week’s Record

On his return to Canberra he organised a meeting with the Hon.

Emma McBride, Assistant Minister for Regional and Rural Health, late in August which Petter Moffitt, Peter Spedding and former mayor of Weddin Shire Council Craig Bembrick attended.

Unfortunately Minister McBride was unable to attend and the meeting was held with her senior staff and Mr McCormack where the case was put forward explaining that all preliminary planning has been done and stressed that although

the local population is expected not to significantly increase, the number of people over 65 will dramatically jump by 2030 and many local residents will be forced to find aged care away from their families and community.

This is already happening as there is a waiting list even now.

Since then, there has been a meeting with Mr McCormack in Grenfell with Weddin Shire Council and Health Council members

where he informed them the government has released funding for 100 new MPS beds Australia wide. The Health Council has been advices that Western NSW Local Health District will make an application for additional places based on its planning work.

It is noted that there is currently no capital funding to accomodate an expansion of aged care places at the MPS.

Help CEF make a difference

HELP us reach our annual target of $60,000.

Donations from September 1 to October 31 will be matched in Country Education Foundation of Australia’s Matched Giving Campaign.

Now is an ideal time to donate.

A big thanks to Grenfell Lions who have just made a very generous donation to kick off this period.

Our major annual fundraiser, the Spring Ball, is set for October 12.

Grenfell Bowling Club is hosting the event on Saturday, October 12, 2024. Or-

ganise your friends and buy tickets.

It will be a night of dancing and fun.

Tickets available until Saturday, October 4.

And yes, applications for 2025 are now open.

Young people of the Weddin Shire who are on their post school pathways can apply for a scholarship.

The criteria are a demonstrated financial need; aged 16-25 years; attended school in or currently live in the Weddin Shire and are commitment to achieving their goals.

Applications close November 30, 2024.

This year we awarded nearly $50000 in scholarships, and another $40000 has come through which all our recipients have benefitted from.

Another good reason to apply.

We make a difference through your great community support.

We are still working towards our $60,000 target, well over halfway, but we do still need your support.

“The funds have helped me pay for some of my accommodation costs so far this year.

“This has been a huge weight off my shoulders as I have been able to be a little more flexible with my remaining budget in regard to buying the textbooks that I need, coming home to visit and not having to pick a few wants when grocery shopping instead of just needs.” Share your news:

Go to https://cef.org.au/ apply-for-a-grant/ or contact cefgrenfell@gmail.com.

Not only does a successful applicant receive financial support from the local

foundation, but they also become eligible for a range of additional scholarships provided by Country Education Foundation of Australia.

purchasing resources to raise awareness for domestic violence.

Ms Schiller said they also wanted to thank The Grenfell Lions Club, The Grenfell Food Hall, the Weddin Shire Council, Grenfell IGA, Grenfell Newsagency and The Conron Store for supporting the Family Fun Day.

“Without them we don’t have an event like that happening as we don’t have the money for it,” she said.

PUBLIC NOTICE | COMPANY DAM

Weddin Shire Council advises residents and visitors that bluegreen algae has reappeared at Company Dam. We urge everyone to refrain from any contact with the water until further notice due to the presence of this algae. Blue-green algae naturally occurs in lakes and dams, thriving in warm, nutrient-rich waters with sunlight exposure. Recent rainfall followed by warmer temperatures has created favourable conditions for its growth. Unfortunately, this has led to increased levels at Company Dam. Blue-green algae impacts a number of lakes and dams across the state. Council Officers are actively monitoring the situation to ensure community safety. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation. For more information, please contact Council’s Environmental Services team on (02) 6343 1212.

FROM

THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank the hard-working team and volunteers who delivered the Grenfell Voices Against Violence event at Taylor Park. Thank you, particularly, to Elly Schiller from Community Health, who organised the guest speakers to discuss a very important topic. Thank you for raising awareness in our community and connecting people who may be victims and allowing them to see faces and connect with service providers.

On the business front, I had the Council’s Executive Team spend a day undertaking a business continuity workshop to look at all the functions in Council and identifying what functions of criticality would need additional measures in the event that services were interrupted. I look forward to delivering a final business continuity plan for our Council.

I also had the opportunity to meet the new General Manager of Central Tablelands Water this week, Mr Charlie Harris. As a constituent Council to Central Tablelands Water (CTW), CTW is a single-purpose county council that has been responsible for providing water supply services to many communities in the Central West since 1944. Each council term, Weddin Shire elects two Councillors to sit on the Board of CTW. CTW Board members are paid an annual fee. I look forward to working closely with Charlie and ensuring strategic regional water outcomes.

Have a great week

An icon of Australian science

A world-famous facility, now on the National Heritage List, stands proud in NSW’s Central West region. Murriyang, CSIRO’s Parkes radio telescope, is 20 kilometres north of Parkes, at CSIRO’s Parkes Observatory on Wiradjuri Country.

The striking telescope at the heart of the observatory, owned and operated by Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, is a cuttingedge instrument used by astronomers all over the world. It has also had a key role in many space missions, most famously the Apollo 11 Moon landing and star of the movie The Dish.

Information on all this and so much more can be found

at the observatory’s visitor centre. The centre caters for those curious about radio astronomy, space technologies, as well as the accomplishments made with this icon of Australian science.

The centre features a 3D theatre, interactive exhibits, informative displays and an incredible close-up view of the world-class telescope.

Take a moment’s break from your travels with some out-of-this-world souvenir

shopping, a playground for the little ones and picnic areas. Entrance to the visitor centre is free. Opening hours are from 8.30am to 5.00pm (including the public holiday 7th October) during NSW school holidays.

October 7pm, at the Rugby Union Club House.

All are welcome, enquiries to Joshua Taylor 0427 951 125.

Junior rugby touch comp starts today

GRENFELL Junior Rugby Club’s touch footy competition is ready to kick off today, Thursday, September 26 with around 70 registered players set to take part.

The club hosted a registration night for the short competition on Thursday, September 19, with around 50 interested players coming down in person to sign up.

The Grenfell Junior Rugby Club’s Tanya Radnedge said they have split the players into two age competitions, with three teams in the senior competition, comprised of players aged 13 to 16.

The junior competition has five teams competing, with players aged from between 8 and 12 years.

These teams within both competitions will feature players of mixed ages and abilities within them which allows for an introduction to rugby and the Grenfell Junior Rugby Club, Ms Radnedge said.

While registrations for the teams closed on Wednesday, September 25, Ms Radnedge said if there were interested players who missed the cutoff to come down to the Junior Rugby Club and have a chat with them to see if they could work something out.

The competition will run for six weeks through the school term. The first day of the competition begins today, and will take a break over the next two weeks over the school holidays, with round two taking place in week one of the next term.

Ms Radnedge said the competition is designed to get kids down to the Grenfell Junior Rugby Club and something to do.

Games will run from 4:30pm, to 5:30pm on the Thursday evenings.

The teams are comprised of between six or seven players per side.

The senior competition will play games with seven minute halves and the junior competition has matches split into six minute halves.

Each week, Ms Radnedge said the teams should expect to play two games.

The most successful team at the end of the competition will win a prize.

Grenfell to host Western women’s rugby league this Saturday

THIS Saturday at Lawson Oval Woodbridge will host the Panorama Platypi in round 3 of the Western Women’s Rugby League competition. There will be five games of full contact Rugby League starting with the Under 12s at 9.30am followed by the Under 14s (10.30am), 16s (11.40am), 18s (12.50pm) and then the day will conclude with the Opens clash starting at 2pm.

We wish the following local girls

all the best on Saturday, Harmony Schneider and Meadow Mooney (under 14s), Hannah Kohnen, Rachael Tomlinson and Amber Taylor (under 16s), Dana Yerbury (under 18s), and Caitlin Dixon (opens). All games should be very competitive but there will be plenty of interest in the opens match as Woodbridge have won their first two games of the competition however on Saturday, they are coming up against a Platypi outfit who were the 2023 premiers and who are also one of the 2024 premiership heavyweights.

Gate entry is $5 Adults and $3 Pensioners, and the gate is owned and operated by the Woodbridge Cup Committee. The Western Women’s competition is made up of seven clubs and they are the Goannas (Dubbo area), Vipers (Orange area), Panorama Platypi (Bathurst area), Lachlan (Forbes & Parkes area), Dragons (Mudgee area), Woodies (Woodbridge Cup clubs), and Cougars (Castlereagh Cup clubs- Gilgandra, Cobar etc).

Each team plays each other once

culminating in the Semi-Finals (9th/10th November) and Grand Final (16th November).

There has been massive growth in the Women’s tackle game in recent years and this is partly due to the well-defined pathways.

The representative teams commence with the Lisa Fiola Cup (under 17s), followed by the Tarsha Gale Cup (under 19s), Harvey Norman Cup (Sydney First Grade), NRL Women, State of Origin, and the pinnacle, Australian selection.

There are already many players who have come through the Western competition who are playing in the beforementioned representative teams.

The Woodbridge WRL Opens had a good start to the season over the last two weeks with two wins under their belts.

In Round 1 at Cowra on September 14, Woodbridge triumphed over the Mudgee Dragons 16-8.

Tennis team in State final

GRENFELL Public School’s tennis team has qualified for the Todd Woodbridge Cup finals.

On Monday, September 9, the school’s Stage 2 tennis team competed in the regional finals of the Cup at Cowra Tennis Club.

It was an exciting day filled with skill, determination and sportsmanship.

The team is comprised of eight students with one reserve selected during tryouts hosted by Mrs Radnedge and Mrs White.

The day began with impressive matches against Kinross Silver and Holy Family Parkes.

Grenfell’s mixed doubles team played exceptionally well, and after a tightly contested Pool final against St Raph’s Cowra, Grenfell emerged victorious in a dramatic countback.

In the semi-finals, Grenfell faced Kinross Gold. Despite a tough start, losing three out of four matches in the first section, our mixed doubles team rose to the challenge, securing a crucial win that propelled us into the final against Forbes Public - a re-

match of the qualifier final.

Both teams showcased remarkable tennis talent, with Grenfell proudly qualifying for the state finals in Sydney this November.

Mrs Radnedge said the team were really excited.

Congratulations to all the players for their outstanding effort and for representing our school with pride and sportsmanship.

A special thank you goes to Mrs. White and Mrs Radnedge for coordinating and coaching the team, and to the parents who helped with transportation.

Now, it’s time to prepare for Sydney!

The team aims to train hard and bring their best to the state finals.

This year’s Todd Woodbridge Cup journey started in August for the Grenfell Public School team with the first round in Parkes, and they have been practicing three lunchtimes per week.

Throughout the Todd Woodbridge Cup, Mrs Radnedge said all of the players have improved their tennis and communication skills.
