SPRINGTIME produces an air of excitement in the Weddin Shire, particularly for horse-lovers who eagerly await the start of the Weddin Mountain Muster.

The Weddin Mountain Muster is a week-long horse trail riding event, hosted in Grenfell every year, during the first week of the NSW Spring school holidays. Horse enthusiasts travel from afar to take part in this

prestigious event, which is one of Grenfell’s major tourism events. The Muster showcases many of the Weddin Shire’s endearing attributes; the beautiful views, farming landscape, local produce, friendly community, starry nights and more.

“The incredible volunteers of the Muster Committee work hard yearround to make the event the best possible,” Melanie Cooper, President

of the Weddin Mountain Muster Committee, said.

“Riders come from far and wide to experience this unique event, with many returning participants, who are like family, becoming strong advocates for our little town, so we do not want to disappoint,” Melanie said.

As usual, the event is booked out, with 120 riders and their families

set to converge on Grenfell from Sunday, September 29 to Saturday, October 5, 2024.

“This year, participants will see the sights around Eualdrie, Adelargo, Quondong, Company Dam and the township, including the Grenfell Silo Art, Obrien’s Lookout and the Main Street,” Trail Boss, Ashleigh Leibick, said.

NEWS FROM WEEK SEVEN

Bland Sports

What a day!

We travelled for Caragabal for the Bland Sports Carnival.

I was so proud to see our students giving it their all in so many different events.

We did Mrs. Dixon proud with our marching and March Past Championship.

Well done to Cooper, Millyn and Heidi for winning the age championships.

And our seniors had their game faces on when it came to the Senior Ball Games.

Well done to Caragabal,

the overall winners of the day.

Life Education Van

We had a visit from our favourite giraffe last week.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed the visit to Harold’s van.

Our K/1’s learned about the importance of hygiene, sleep, healthy foods and ways to keep safe; while our primary students learned about the body systems and how nutrition, medicine, exercise and drugs may affect these.

Year 6 were very excited for a private tour of Harold’s home as well.

Bushfire Danger Period

With fire season approaching we have been busy completing emergency plans at school. Please see the attached form regarding fire ratings and emergency procedures. It is also important to have those conversations with children about emergency procedures at the home or farm; and to ensure our properties are fire safe heading into the bushfire danger period.

Kind regards, Brady Pudya Relieving Principal

K/1 AQUA’S EXCITING TRIP TO THE GRENFELL POST OFFICE

ON Friday, September 6, the K/1 Aqua class embarked on an exciting excursion to the Grenfell Post Office, accompanied by Mrs. Kilby and Miss Emily. Over the past two weeks, the students had been hard at work writing persuasive letters, and this special trip was their chance to post their letters home.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Makin, who gave them a fascinating tour of the post office. The children were thrilled to see where all the mail is sorted and especially excited to get a close-up look at the famous postie bike.

The highlight of the excursion, of course, was when the students each posted their letters.

The excitement was visible as they eagerly dropped their envelopes into the post box, anticipating the moment they would find them in their own mailboxes at home.

“We can’t wait to until they are delivered!” the children said with big smiles, already looking forward to sharing their hard work with their families.

It was a day full of fun and learning, and the K/1 Aqua class left the post office with new knowledge about how our mail system works - and the excitement of waiting for their special letters to arrive at home.

Caragabal Public School news

CARAGABAL PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWS FOR WEEK EIGHT FROM MR JONES

DEAR Caragabal Public School Community,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to share some important news regarding my role for the upcoming Term 4.

I have accepted a relieving Principal position at E.A. Southee Public School for the duration of Term 4.

During my absence, Miss. Jo Sanderson will step in as the Acting Teaching Principal here at Caragabal Public School. I am confident that she will provide excellent leadership and consistency of learning during this time. This opportunity will allow me to enhance my knowledge of procedures and policies, which I look forward to bringing back to our school community when I return in Term 1, 2025.

I believe that the experiences I gain will ultimately benefit all of us at Caragabal.

This week, I will share further details regarding the teacher who will be taking over my class during my absence. Thank you for your understanding and support as we navigate this transition together.

Warm regards,

Mr Patrick Jones

Captain’s Report

On Monday this week, we had school photos!

I enjoyed coming to school and seeing everyone with cute hairdos. A lot of hairbrushing was needed as everyone was determined to look their absolute best!

I have a good feeling all our photos will look even better than last years. Wednesday recess was a real cracker! The year 3-6s were talking about the sheep races and we began to practise getting all the lollies as we could. We used tennis balls as the lollies. It eventually turned into all of us rugby tackling each other for the tennis balls! (Or for Indi, wild animal attacks) A lot of fun. From that, it evolved into a game where Nic, Emily, Eddie, Takira and I were trying to steal the bag of “lollies” off of everyone else including the little kids!

Ps. I lost my earring while tackling someone!

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Healthy Harold to our school! The K-1 class explored topics about healthy foods and staying safe, while the 2-6 class delved into building relationships, showing respect, and online safety with platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat.

Health in focus Weddin Mountain Muster comes to region

Weddin Shire Council met with the Member for the Riverina, Michael McCormack, prior to the caretaker period to discuss the community’s top priority to see funding for the Grenfell Multipurpose Service and Community Health for new facilities and additional health and aged care services.

Weddin Shire Council continues to advocate and support the Health Council to lobby the Federal and State Governments for these facilities and additional services to meet the growing needs in our community.

Weddin Shire Council’s General Manager Noreen Vu said the ABS data shows that our population is ageing, and this was also recently confirmed with the Rural Doctors Network (RDN) who looked at the Weddin Local Government Area compared with our counterparts in the Central West.

The RDN confirmed that more than 31% of our population was over the age of 65 and that Weddin LGA had a higher health need when compared to those across the Central West due to our ageing population, higher proportion of strokes or lung conditions.

“Council will continue to work with all parties involved to push for better rural and regional health outcomes and to allow residents to access services clos-

er to home,” Ms Vu said.

Mr McCormack said he was delighted to attend a productive meeting with the Weddin Council and Health Council in Grenfell to discuss health care in the region, particularly the lack of progress in the proposed redevelopment of the Grenfell Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) to improve aged care capacity for the Shire.

“This followed a successful meeting I initiated in Parliament House between Weddin Health Council members, Chair Peter Moffitt OAM and Peter Spedding, [former] Weddin Shire Mayor Craig Bembrick and the office of Regional Health Minister Emma McBride to impress the health care situation in the area,” Mr McCormack said.

“The Health Council has told me the MPS has been on the Western Local Health District’s annual list of capital investment priorities for several years but has not been funded.

SOMETHING WORTH SHARING? We’re always on the lookout for news.

Renee on 0448 238 023 or rpowell@midwestmedia.com.au

“I have been working with the Weddin Health Council, along with my office, and have identified some funding opportunities that may be of assistance.

“I have also written to Minister McBride to highlight the community’s distress over the Grenfell MPS not being redeveloped and not meeting the district’s increasing residential aged care needs,” he said.

“The community’s older residents are an important part of the fabric that makes the Weddin Shire such a wonderful place in which to live. They need and, indeed, deserve the best care possible in their senior years in the community they call home.

“I was pleased to lobby for and deliver the Grenfell Medical Centre through the Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, which was officially opened on 3 May 2019, but I know there is always more work to do,” he said.

More to come.

■ From the front page “Trails are handpicked and tested by the Muster Committee and we are very fortunate to be able to offer rides through both public and private property, thanks to our supportive land owners,” she said.

Participants camp for the week with their four-legged friends at the Grenfell Showground with trail rides leaving from the Showground each day and varying in length, from 8kms around town up to 30kms on longer days.

“Participants spend a wonderful week on horseback with friends and family, great food and spectacular scenery,” Publicity Officer for the Muster, May Logan said.

“The Committee, having put countless hours into preparations for the event, get to see the fruits of their labour in smiling faces and safe trails.”

Founded in 2001 by a handful of locals as a subcommittee of the Grenfell PAH&I Association, the Weddin Mountain Muster strives to raise funds to maintain and improve infrastructure at the Grenfell Showground and contributes to other local projects. Previous projects include

upgrades to the grandstand, extensions and amenities for the Simpson pavilion and the shelter at Lion’s Park, which is enjoyed by campers and community members. The latest project undertaken by the Muster Committee has been the erection of the “Nev Condon Memorial Stables”, officially opened in 2022.

Each year, the Muster also makes a $1,000 donation to a chosen local charity or community group. This year, the donation will be gifted to the Grenfell Hospital Auxiliary. The Committee endeavours to support as many local businesses as possible, sourcing as much as they can from within the Weddin Shire. Participants are also encouraged to shop and support local.

“The short-term influx of people, who are primed to spend local, provides a welcome boost to the local economy, on a scale that is comparable to the Henry Lawson Festival,” Melanie Cooper said.

The Committee are calling upon the community to really get behind the event, which brings so much to the town, and ask that members of the community get out and cheer them on as they ride through town

and parade down Main St in brilliant dress-ups on Whacky Wednesday, October 2, around 11am.

“This year, there’ll be a QR code posted along Main Street for people to upload their photos of their favourite costumes,” May said.

“Boots and hats will be seen more often down the street, so be sure to say g’day to our visitors.”

This year’s event will see additional support from Weddin Shire Council in the form of traffic controls where horses are required to cross major roads.

“Extra measures in place this year will help with the flow of horses, particularly on the roads around town, which will not only make for a safer ride, but also reduce any inconvenience to the public,” Melanie said.

“We also have strategies in place to help minimise the horse poo, particularly on Main Street and heavily used streets” Melanie said.

“For anyone who is chasing some black gold [horse manure] for their garden, we will have ample supply for the week at the Showground,” she said.

Greenbank goes on the market for the first time in 163 years

LOCATED approximately 22km north-west of Young in the Thuddungra locality, ‘Greenbank’ is a 1,333.5 acre (540ha) picturesque mixed farming property for sale for the first time since the 1860s.

Steele Caldwell (1815-1892), an early pioneer of the Bland region west of the Weddin Mountains purchased ‘Greenbank’ in 1861.

Steele’s daughter Agnes, married John Carlton Watson in 1877 and the Watson family have held Greenbank for five generations since.

The Thuddungra locality is known for its reliability of rainfall and strong red soils making it one of the most productive farming areas in NSW.

‘Greenbank’, which is currently

from Facebook.

leased by a family member, has been run as part of a larger cropping and sheep operation.

Crops grown over the years include, canola, wheat, barley and oats.

The country is slightly undulating and the timber is predominately yellowbox.

The property is sub-divided into 13 main paddocks and would be an ideal location for a sheep or cattle stud with main road frontage, good shade for livestock and reliable water.

Once at the heart of a thriving sheep station, the ‘Greenbank’ homestead is in the process of being lovingly restored to its original glory and in keeping with the historic significance of its time. There

is huge potential for this original homestead to be fully restored or modernised by a new owner.

‘Greenbank’ is being offered for sale through a two-stage Expression of Interest process.

The first stage will run until 10am on Wednesday October 16, 2024 and will seek non-binding offers from interested parties.

Stage two will be a period of price discovery and negotiation between the vendor and interested parties with the aim of acceptance of a fully binding offer by the vendor.

The vendor reserves the right to accept an early offer.

Charging station encourages drivers to stop and visit

WEDDIN Shire Council has installed an EV Charging Station at the Grenfell Aquatic Centre with an aim of encouraging drivers of electric vehicles to stop and visit the Grenfell and the region.

The EV Charging Station was installed after the council was awarded a $17,993.58 grant from the NSW Office of Energy and Climate Change

Drive Electric NSW EV Destination Charging Grants – Round One in November 2022.

Claire McCann, Weddin Shire Council’s arts, tourism and events coordinator said the site at the Grenfell Aquatic Centre was chosen because it was suitable for the 25-50kW destination charger and is within easy access of the Main Street. Ms McCann said with the

charger being a Destination EV charger, it takes a while for the cars to charge so they wanted to encourage drivers to come into the main street and visit the shops along there.

Over the last couple of weeks, Ms McCann said they have noticed a lot of vehicles making use of the EV charger, which is fantastic.

In June 2021, the NSW Government launched the NSW

Electric Vehicle Strategy to make NSW the easiest and most affordable place to buy and operate an electric vehicle (EV) in Australia.

Under the existing electrical transmission infrastructure, Grenfell is suitable for a highly capable 25-50kW destination charger to encourage drivers to visit the region.

The charging station can accommodate charging two

vehicles at one time. Thew time to charge vehicles from empty will vary from vehicle to vehicle, however a rule of thumb, for one EV with a 60kWh battery can take approximately three hours to charge from empty. Currently they are waiting for the outcome of another grant allocation for a second Destination EV charger, Ms McCann said.

PUBLIC NOTICE | COMPANY DAM

Weddin Shire Council advises residents and visitors that bluegreen algae has reappeared at Company Dam. We urge everyone to refrain from any contact with the water until further notice due to the presence of this algae.

Blue-green algae naturally occurs in lakes and dams, thriving in warm, nutrient-rich waters with sunlight exposure. Recent rainfall followed by warmer temperatures has created favourable conditions for its growth. Unfortunately, this has led to increased levels at Company Dam.

Blue-green algae impacts a number of lakes and dams across the state. Council Officers are actively monitoring the situation to ensure community safety. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation.

For more information, please contact Council’s Environmental Services team on (02) 6343 1212.

LIVVI’S PLACE AT TAYLOR PARK, GETTING SET TO GET UNDERWAY

Council is excited to inform you that the Taylor Park redevelopment project is progressing. Council is procuring some of the large key play pieces through competitive tender and quote processes.

Emphasis was placed on encouraging local contractors to share their expertise when quoting. Delivery will require all contractors working together, through the council’s project management team, to ensure we build a schedule that is efficient and effective for all involved. A focus to meet delivery deadlines and be something that everyone in the community can be a part of and proud of. A project plan is underway.

The project will be broken up into various stages, with stage 1 to commence in coming month and completed before the Christmas Carols event in December 2024. Any works unable to be finished by this time will be part of stage 2 which will take place after Australia Day 2025, to ensure we still have full use of the park for these events.

STICKY NIGHTSHADE | HOW DOES THIS WEED AFFECT US?

Sticky nightshade is an invasive plant that competes with crops and pastures. prevents native plants from growing, has sharp prickles which can injure people, pets, livestock and native animals, can make harvesting difficult (e.g. in vineyards), has seeds which are poisonous to humans, contains toxins and is suspected to have caused cattle deaths.

Look for it:

• in pastures and on cultivated land

• along waterways and roadsides

• in dry sclerophyll forests on steep rocky slopes.

What does it look like?

Sticky nightshade is an erect plant up to 1.5 m high. Most of the plant is covered in hairs and prickles.

Prickles are yellow to red, up to 1.3 cm long, and very sharp. Seen it? Call us:

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the Weddin Shire Councillors from the most recent term for their collegiate engagement with Council staff. Together we have delivered a number of projects most notably the Main Street, Welcome to Weddin and Village signage, the inclusion of Acknowledgement of Service to Councils business paper and continued lobbying to State Government on road funding and regional health.

Thank you to our community who voted on the weekend and in the pre-poll, we had a number of candidates register and we expect the results to be formally declared in the first week of October 2024.

I look forward to working respectfully and collaboratively with the elected Councillors. I am pleased to share that we have engaged an independent facilitator to provide a comprehensive and intensive induction program to the newly elected officials to assist them with getting across the local government jargon, expectations and responsibilities of being a Councillor.

I took my family out to the Caragabal Sheep Races on the weekend. I highly recommend putting it onto your agenda next year.

Enjoy this spring weather, the canola is well and truly putting on a fabulous display - keep those antihistamines close by!

Have a great week

Classifications: (P) Preschoolers (C) Children (G) General (PG) Parental Guidance (M) Mature Audiences

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Making bold moves is what Bovines do. But the best moves are made with lots of data to provide backup, just in case you charge into an unexpected complication. Meanwhile, a new relationship shows promise.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Sharing credit for a job well-done is easy for you to do, but this is not necessarily the case for your partner. But fair is fair. Don’t let yourself be denied the right to have your contributions recognized.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Communication is important to help bridge a gap that can lead to problems at home and/or at the workplace. Find a way to get your points across before the breach becomes a chasm.

6.00 Morning Programs. 2.20 MOVIE: West Of Zanzibar. (1954) 4.20 MOVIE: The Wonderful Country. (1959) 6.30 M*A*S*H. 8.30 MOVIE: The Shawshank Redemption. (1994) Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman. 11.20 MOVIE: Night Of The Eagle. (1962) 1.05 Late Programs.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Relationships, whether business or personal, need to be watched carefully for signs of trouble. Any negative indications should be dealt with before they become too burdensome.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations! A more positive aspect highlights much of the Virgo’s week. You should find others more receptive to your suggestions and more likely to act on them.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) All work and little play could wear down the Libra’s usually positive attitude. Take some much-needed time off. Perhaps a short jaunt with someone special is the way to go.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to expand your view from the known to the unfamiliar. Confronting new situations could be challenging, but they could ultimately be extremely satisfying.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Giving advice to those who just want validation for what they’re doing can be unsettling. So, back off and save your counsel for those who really appreciate it.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Cultivating a more positive attitude not only makes you feel better about yourself, but it also has an upbeat effect on those around you, especially a certain someone.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Keeping the lines of communication open and accessible is the key to establishing the right foundation to build an important and meaningful relationship. Stay with it.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Before agreeing to act on a request, consider using your perceptive Piscean talents to see what might lie hidden beneath the surface and possibly cause problems later on.

Conron Store to enter a new chapter in heritage building

CONTRIBUTED

THE Conron Store started as a beautiful vision that was brought to life by founder, Rachel Conron in 2022 at 13 Berrys Road, Grenfell.

Almost two years later and the store is about to enter a new chapter, in a new location, with a new owner, Hayden Rhodes.

38 Main Street was once a retail store, and then transformed into The Collective Grenfell – a wonderful coworking and event space. Hayden and manager Sophie are delighted about the opportunity to bring retail back into the heritage building.

The last day of trading at 13 Berrys Road will be Thursday, September 19.

The store will close to allow the team time to pack, unpack and get ready to welcome customers into their new space in the main street on Wednesday, October 2. Thank you to our family, friends, customers, and community for your continued support. We’re excited about what’s in store, literally! Share your news: Want to share sports, news or achievements with the Grenfell community? Get in touch with the Grenfell Record editorial team, we’d love to share your news.

Huge night for harness racing

‘The Dish’ feature race of biggest meeting for Parkes’ historic Showground paceway

Wales gave the Parkes Club a huge compliment by choosing the venue to conduct one of five Carnival of Cups fixtures for the 2024/25 season.

This Friday night at the Parkes Showground Paceway, a crowd of 5000 is expected to attend what will be the biggest race meeting ever held at the historic track.

Obviously, the music entertainment that has been lined up for Friday night is the primary attraction that has captured the huge interest with The Living End, Shannon Noll, Sarah Berki, Robbie Mortimer and our own Michael Green set to play up a storm but the eight-race harness racing program is certain to produce some great contests.

The feature cup race, named “The Dish,” carries $60,000 in prizemoney, the richest horse race ever held in Parkes that is likely to attract a high-class field.

Not only will the open class pacers be chasing high stakes at the meeting, but they will have the chance to earn their connections a cool million dollar bonus throughout the Carnival of Cups season.

Young, Tamworth, Albury, and Penrith will each host a Cup race on the feature meeting programs and should the Parkes winner go on to win at all those venues, they will pick up the million-dollar purse.

If they can snare four of the Cups, a healthy $500,000 will go their way and for three wins a $250,000 bonus will be given.

Some of Sydney’s leading trainers have indicated that they will travel to Parkes on Friday including David Aiken with Max Delight and Malcolms Rhythm, Joe Connolly with Loyalist and Jason Grimson with Swayzee and Nerano.

The supporting program also offers good prizemoney that should attract trainers from far and wide.

Parkes Harness Racing Club

President Geoff Cole said that his committee is excited to be hosting such a significant event and believes that come Friday, the number of patrons attending will be greater than the predicted 5,000.

“It is a free event with music artists that you would normally expect to pay over $100 to see, so why wouldn’t anyone who likes entertainment not turn up,”

Geoff said.

“We were a bit surprised when we first learnt that the Board and Management of Harness Racing New South Wales chose Parkes to host the event, but we were pleased

that they did, and we are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that it will be a memorable night.”

Gates will open at 4.30pm with the first of the harness racing events scheduled for 5.15pm.

A number of food stalls will be operating as well as coffee outlets, an ice cream van, and the usual bar facilities.

Heza Charmer claims the Cup as racing returns to Geurie

The immaculate presentation of the picturesque racecourse did not give a hint that Geurie had not hosted a race meeting since 2020 due to droughts, floods and the COVID pandemic.

Trainers were pleased to see racing return on Saturday, none more so than Coonabarabran trainer Wayne Martyn who landed a winning double including Heza Charmer in the Cup.

Very well ridden by Izzy Neale, Heza Charmer tracked the leading pair Jin Chi Phantom and Mishani Vandal in the run to the home turn.

The big crowd was treated to an exciting finish to the 1600 metres Friends & Family of Bernie Wilkin Geurie Picnic Cup with the $26 rank outsider Heza Charmer reaching the lead then staving off the challenge from The Drafter (Ricky Blewitt, $6) and Dynastic (Arthur Pollock, $5.50).

Wayne Martyn had earlier combined with Gilgandra based jockey Zara Lewis to win the

1400 metres Carter Lindsay & Weber and Stevensons Hydraulics Class 2 Trophy Handicap with Intense ($6) which set the pace and lasted to beat Yarraville (Arthur Pollock, $3.50) by a short half head with Chookster (Leandro Ribeiro, $4.40) a long head away third. First leg of a winning double for Zara Lewis came in the 1400 metres Trax Livestock Transport Maiden Plate when

the Robert Lane, Dubbo trained Snow Missile ($13) led all the way for an over two lengths wins from Kingsway (Izzy Neale, $3.60) and Flying Shalaa (Leandro Ribeiro, $2.80).

A winning double also for Izzy Neale, with the Brett Robb, Dubbo trained Rothgate ($2.10 favourite) holding.a slender lead at the top of the straight before kicking clear to beat Real Salty (Leandro Ribeiro, $3.20) and

Foxstorm (Zara Lewis, $10) by almost two lengths in the 1000 metres Think Water Outwest Class 3 Trophy Handicap. Under the guidance of premier jockey Leandro Ribeiro, the Connie Greig, Dubbo trained Rebel Love ($4) wore down joint leader Keep Ya Promise (Izzy Neale, $2.30 favourite) to win the 1000 metres Pumps & Irrigation Maiden Plate by a half head with a length to the the third placed Lemoni (Sebastian Galea, $4).

Heavily supported from $3 to $1.80 favourite, Gulf Of Gabes followed a fast finishing second at Gulargambone the previous week when winning the 1600 metres Shanahans Livestock Transport Class B Handicap, the final event at Geurie.

Ridden by Arthur Pollock and trained at Scone by his mother Nikki Pollock, Gulf Of Gabes swept home from last to win by over two lengths from Casino Silk (Todd Bailey, $6) and Mean Girls (Zara Lewis, $3.40). Racing at Enngonia on Saturday and Narromine on Monday.

sonnel will be at the paceway to ensure all runs smoothly.

Patrons are reminded that alcohol cannot be brought into the venue and chairs will be provided for their comfort.

It’s not too late to get your tickets to the big night.

First round win for Woodbridge women

After a huge Woodbridge Cup season, the creme de la creme of the Shire have come together to face the best of the rest in the Western Women’s Rugby League Championships.

Woodbridge who are made up of players from towns around the area including Cowra, Canowindra, Grenfell and other villages faced the all-conquering Mudgee Dragons WRL side in Round 1 at Cowra last weekend

The girls first up hit out over Mudgee saw them triumph 16-8 in a dogged affair that could’ve gone either way.

For coach Jack Nobes, the win was a great start to the competition and sure sign the girls will be more than competitive this season.

Held over seven rounds, the competition is fast becoming one of the flagship events on the women’s league calendar and a pathway to the WNRL for some.

Woodbridge are away to Castlereagh in Cobar in Round 2 before they take on Panorama in Round 3 at Grenfell and have the bye in Round 4.

A tricky run home will see the girls take on Lachlan away in Round 5 then the Vipers in Grenfell again before an away game at Narromine against the Wiradjuri Goannas before the semi finals on November 9 and 10. The Grand Final will be held on November 16. Check out the Western Women’s Rugby League Facebook page for more updates and information on the season.

Caragabal hosts top day of races

ALL of the action on the track was at Caragabal on Saturday, September 14 with the return of The Coopers Farm Gear Caragabal Sheep Races.

A crowd of some 600 people travelled to the Caragabal Country Club to cheer on the sheep across a seven race program.

Sheep Races volunteer Karen Pollock said they had a rather large crowd of people, and an excellent day out, saying it was one of the best yet.

The winning sheep of the final “Rams Cox Plate” was Ewe-Reeka, owned for the race by ‘Crowie’, with the sheep Larry Lambert, owned by local Mandy Heat, placing second.

Before each race the race committee auction off all of the sheep for the race, and for the final if it makes it.

The first two placed sheep in each of the races earns a place in a the final.

While they don’t get to keep the sheep, the auction winners get prize money if their sheep places first or second.

Ms Pollock said the other

winners on the day were: Rammit Where; Beam Ewe Up; Justin Nough; Ewe Got 2B Joking; Ewe Baa-stard; Ewe-turn; Marilyn Merino.

The winner of the Fun in the Field competition was West Wyalong’s Shannon Evans who dressed up as “Duff Man”.

The lolly drop proved to be as popular as ever, Ms Pollock said, with a great turnout after the races to listen to the live music from the band “The Young Ones”.

The Caragabal Sheep Races are run and organised by volunteers, with the Caragabal P&C running the canteen.

Ms Pollock said the day was very successful finan-

cially, with many generous punters.

Funds raised on the day go to the Caragabal P&C and to the maintenance and upkeep of the Caragabal Country Club facilities - which is a not-for-profit club.

Ms Pollock said she would like to say a big thank you to their generous sponsors and the volunteers who helped make the day run.

Spectators were ready for the sheep to begin racing at the Caragabal Sheep Races.
