Grenfell puts on top Show

All of the action was down at the Grenfell Showgrounds on Friday, August 30 and Saturday, August 31 with the return of the annual Grenfell Show.

The event was described as excellent by Show secretary Bronwyn Liebich, with an amazing array of entries across competitions, both within and outside the pavilion.

This year saw the return of the speed shear challengethe first time it has come to the show in many years, Mrs Liebich said, with around 30 entries.

Other competitions which proved to be highlights were the tractor pull competition and the yard dog trials.

In the competitions hosted in the pavilion, Mrs Liebich said numbers were good across the board in all of the sections.

“Pavilions were really well supported again, the quilting section was up, the horticultural was really good,” she said.

Cooking and junior floral sections as well as Lego, also received a large number of entries.

Tara Anderson was named the 2024 Grenfell Show Young Woman, while the 2024 Grenfell Show Rural Ambassador was awarded to Finlay Maclean.

During the show’s opening ceremony on Saturday afternoon, the efforts of several committee members were also recognised including

Grace Eppelstun who was awarded the Most Valuable Contribution to the Grenfell Show 2024, and Mark and Bronwyn Liebich were awarded Life Membership of the Grenfell PAH&I.

Mrs Liebich said they’ve been involved in the Show

Society for several years and this recognition was greatly appreciated.

While they appreciate the recognition, Mrs Liebich said there are a lot of people who turn up every year and help out, going under the radar.

“We appreciate them turning up every year as we wouldn’t have a show without them,” she said.

Mrs Liebich said they also appreciate and want to thank the exhibitors for all of the time and effort they go to in entering the competitions.

■ Continues page three.

Mrs Liebich said they would also like to thank everyone who has supported and sponsored the show this year as it makes it possible to provide more entertainment for families to enjoy without having to put a hand into their pockets.

Locals step up at Grenfell Show

| From the front page

Grenfell’s Tara Anderson has been named the 2024 Grenfell Show Young Woman and hopes to use this competition to become more involved in the Show Society, and to encourage more young women to step out of their comfort zones and seize new opportunities.

Tara has had prior experience with the competition, being the 2018 Grenfell Showgirl, and said having that prior experience will help her in the year ahead, including with answering questions more maturely and being more confident in her public speaking.

This competition has been a valuable experience, Tara said, and encourages more people to step out of their comfort zones and have a go, as participants can learn so much from it.

Tara said her involvement in the local Show began through her great grandmother, who was a dedicated member of the Young Show Society until her passing in 2015.

Since then, Tara said she has entered in the Show every year, trying her hand at different competitions including cooking, scrapbooking, entering a duck, if she has one at home, or bringing her dogs down.

“I do everything because that’s what keeps it involved, because if we don’t do it, the show doesn’t run,” she said.

Looking forward to next year, Tara encourages people to get involved in the show, as it is so important for our shows for people to be involved.

The 2024 Grenfell Rural Ambassador Finlay Maclean said a major reason he entered the program was because he wanted to step out of his comfort zone.

Finlay said being the 2024 Grenfell Rural Ambassador will be a good chance for him to meet some new people and gain new experience.

Along with becoming the Rural Ambassador, Finlay said he intends to take a more active role in helping the Grenfell Show Committee where he can.

During the official opening of the show on Saturday, Grace Eppelstun was recognised for her efforts this year, being awarded the most valuable contribution to the Grenfell Show 2024.

Despite having moved to Tathum, near Casino over a year ago, Grace has remained an active member of the Grenfell Show Committee, and does much of her reports remotely over the computer and over the phone.

This year, Grace said they are proud of what they have been able to do with their sponsorship changes this year and they have so many more sponsors to the show.

“What that means is we’re able to improve the experience of the people who attend the show and that’s what it’s all about and that’s why we volunteer,” she said.

Looking forward to the year ahead, Grace said they need volunteers, people who are willing to come to the committee meetings and provide any help they can.

AgShows NSW President Jill Chapman said local shows such as the Grenfell Show are about bringing people together and making the community stronger.

Jill said the show is for the whole community as it about showcasing what the community has to offer from the best of the beef and livestock to the best of handwriting and needlework.

Grenfell Public School entries make top display

Grenfell Public School once again made a remarkable impact at this year’s Grenfell Show, with students and teachers coming together to showcase their creativity and talents across many categories.

In the lead-up to the show, each class embarked on an artistic journey, creating a ‘hanger’ a 1m x 1m decorative poster or display to be hung in the pavilion. Teachers planned their art lessons around this project, resulting in an array of imaginative and vibrant entries that captivated everyone who visited the pavilion.

Students from all year levels were also hard at work preparing entries for the handwriting and School Artwork sections.

The joy and pride were palpable as children and their families admired their art displayed in the pavilions. The effort was well-rewarded, with many students taking home prizes for their exceptional work.

A highlight of the show were the performances by our talented Marimba ensembles and choir at the official opening on Saturday. Led by Mrs Kilby, Primary 3-6 group impressed the crowd with their renditions of “Grace and Favour” and “Borris the Baseman,” while the Infants K-2 group

charmed everyone with “Cabbage Cafe” and “Putting on the Hill.”.

The school choir, led by Mrs Hannah Ryan, had the honour of leading the national anthem at the official opening. We are proud of the dedication of both groups in their preparation.

Grenfell Public School students were recognised in the many numerous areas throughout the show.

Among the achievements were Faith Martin’s 3rd place for her delectable mud cake in the cooking section, Clarence and Walter McMahon’s first and second places, respectively, for their pikelets, and Hilary Wright’s 1st place in the Craft and Needlework section for her paper craft picture featuring flowers and a frog pond.

Marlie Leibick took 3rd place in the Lego section for a creative board picture, Walter McMahon received a champion card for his birthday card, Georgie Hazell claimed 1st place in the floral section with her vegetable poodle, and Clarence McMahon was named floral champion with his floral saucer.

Annabelle Randall’s blue dragon, crafted from clay, also earned her a 2nd place. Maddison Mitton achieved a first place for her artwork of Harry Potter.

Our students also excelled

in the Junior Stockman competitions, with School Captain Wyatt Bruce taking 1st place and Byron Troy earning 2nd in their age groups.

In addition to the student entries, Grenfell Public School featured a comprehensive display in the pavilion, highlighting the vibrant role our school plays within the community. The display also showcased the many ways our dedicated staff contribute to our town. From involvement in various sporting and community groups to their presence at local events, our staff are vital to the fabric of Grenfell.

Information bags were handed out on the day, offering a closer look at the wonderful programs and initiatives that our school provides.

The P&C played a significant role in adding an element fun to the show by running the popular showbag stall. The stall was a hit among children and families, offering a variety of fun and exciting showbags filled with goodies.

We congratulate all students who participated and to the families and teachers who supported them. Their efforts made the show a great success, and we are incredibly proud of the achievements of our students.

PUBLIC NOTICE | COMPANY DAM

Weddin Shire Council advises residents and visitors that blue-green algae has reappeared at Company Dam. We urge everyone to refrain from any contact with the water until further notice due to the presence of this algae.

Blue-green algae naturally occurs in lakes and dams, thriving in warm, nutrient-rich waters with sunlight exposure. Recent rainfall followed by warmer temperatures has created favourable conditions for its growth. Unfortunately, this has led to increased levels at Company Dam.

Blue-green algae impacts a number of lakes and dams across the state. Council Officers are actively monitoring the situation to ensure community safety. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation. For more information, please contact Council’s Environmental Services team on (02) 6343 1212.

LIVVI’S PLACE AT TAYLOR PARK, GETTING SET TO GET UNDERWAY

Council is excited to inform the community that the Taylor Park re-development project is progressing, with Council procuring some of the large key play pieces in the last month through competitive tender and quote processes.

Emphasis was placed on encouraging local contractors to share their expertise when quoting. Delivery will require all contractors working together, through the council’s project management team, to ensure we build a schedule that is efficient and effective for all involved, will meet delivery deadlines, and be something that everyone in the community can be a part of and proud of. A project plan is being developed for the stages in which the work will commence.

The project will be broken up into various stages, with stage 1 underway in the coming month and completed before the Christmas Carols event in December 2024. Any works unable to be finished by this time will be in stage 2 which will take place after Australia Day 2025, to ensure we still have full use of the park for these events. TAURUS (April

to May 20) Sometimes Cupid doesn’t score a perfect bull’s-eye for romantic Bovines. But don’t give up; he’s got another arrow pointed in your direction, and this time, he won’t miss.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Being cool is still the right way to handle a heated situation. Deal with things as they occur. Agitating over problems that might not happen just drains your energy. Be positive!

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) This is a good time to restart those workplace projects that you’ve put off for too long. Then make plans to spark up your love life with a romantic weekend getaway.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A jealous co-worker might try to goad you into losing your temper. But instead of reacting with an angry roar, just purr happily away as if nothing is bothering you.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Resist the impulse to confide in people you don’t know too well. What you said in confidence could soon come back to haunt you. Be very careful.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member calls from a far-off place to give you some startling information. What you do with this news could lead to some changes in your life.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You’re beginning to feel more confident about making decisions than you have for some time. But you still need to know the facts before making a move.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some surprises this week are fun, while some are upsetting. Enjoy the fun and handle the rest by getting all the facts before deciding how to react.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your belief in traditional values might be tested by a loved one’s startling revelation. Expect to do some deep soul-searching before finding your answer.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You usually prefer to let unpleasant things work themselves out, but this time, you might want to confront the situation and take action to deal with it.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You will soon mark an important milestone in your life. The event will reunite you with people from your past, including someone you thought you’d never see again.

Weddin learns about wonder of wattles

Members of the Weddin community gathered among the wattles on Friday, August 23 with 30 attendees.

Participants were able to learn more about the wonders of wattles and the impact the plant has on our landscape.

Next up for Weddin Landcare will be the their Improving On Farm Biodiversity Workshop hosted with the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust and Josh Frappell.

Josh Frappell is an ecosystem regeneration specialist from The Regenerative, which is based in Mudgee.

He will lead participants in discussions around taking an holistic ap-

proach to soil health, biodiversity, and sustainable practices to increase your land’s productivity.

The day will include a classroomstyle session with Josh in the woolshed, before heading outside to see some regeneration projects and explore farm dam biodiversity.

This workshop will take place from 9:30 am to 2:30pm on Tuesday, September 10 at Myall Park, Caragabal.

To RSVP: contact Claire at weddinlandcare1@outlook.com or 0421 716 170

March saw eight members attend the Central West Forum day at Condobolin, we went by bus driven by Liz Lotherington and thank her for this.

It was an enjoyable day where I presented our branch report and met our new State President Sally Cronberger.

We will be hosting the 2025 Forum here in Grenfell.

The Treasurer’s report highlighted that items purchased in the last 12 months included:

Emergency bags, eight new televisions for the MPS, Mosaic equipment, Activity items for the MPS staff Emma Stowe, Maree Neill and April Hedley, four recliner chairs including sharing costs for a recliner in the palliative room in memory of Margaret Hancock, a medical chair for Community Health costing $12340 and finally a computer for the Auxiliary as

it is now compulsory for us to have one.

Many others have made donations including the Deb Ball, Voices Against Violence, MPS staff and families that have had loved ones in the MPS.

All monies received and made by the Auxiliary stay in Grenfell.

The Auxiliary extends a thank you to all the staff at the Hospital and MPS under the leadership of Jackie Skinner, Nicole Widdows, Shelley Clark and Tracey Hewen as well as the Community Health Staff for the way they run all their sections on a daily basis.

Also many congratulations to Jasmin Jones on winning the NSW Health Staff Member of the Year award.

Lamington orders are to be in by Friday, September 6. Orders can be made at the Bakery, the Tin Cupboard, The MPS and Community Health.

The next meeting will be in the Leisure room at the Hospital on September 18. I cannot finish this report without remembering our late patrons Meryl Hunter and Mavis Drogemuller who passed away at the end of 2023.

These ladies were inspirations to us and great workers for our Auxiliary over many years and we miss them still.
