Top day at races
By BRENDAN MCCOOL
All of the action was at the Grenfell Racecourse on Saturday, September 28 for the Grenfell Jockey Club Races.
Grenfell Jockey Club President Andrew Hooper said it was a beautiful day out with perfect weather and some exciting racing.
Mr Hooper said most of the races were right down to the wire, with fantastic horses and jockeys on the course.
The racing was that competitive, Mr Hooper said there was nothing really short and no odds on favourites all day.
Some 500 people from near and far came down to cheer on all of the action on the track and enjoy the day out.
Mr Hooper said a special mention to the trainer Andrew Dale and Lachlan Dale from Wangaratta in Victoria, as Lachlan has been bringing their horses to the Grenfell Jockey Club Races for several years,

bringing seven starters this year.
Andrew Dale’s horse Deploy and Destroy won the Loaded Dogmaking it a back-to-back win in that race for the horse and trainer.
Mr Hooper said they also wanted to make a special mention of trainer Don Dwyer who travelled from Seymour, in Victoria with four runners entered this year.
Off the track, the Grenfell Jockey Club host more than 100 people for lunch which included the trainers, owners and sponsors, and this year,
Mr Hooper said, they had a punters group with 25 people come up to Grenfell from Yass.
Mr Hooper said he wanted to thank the hard working Grenfell Jockey Club committee for making the day a success.
“To get that race track ready for two race meetings a year, which the Picnics do and we do, a lot of work is involved,” he said.

Volunteers train for vertical rescue
Volunteers from Grenfell State Emergency Service (SES) Units have successfully completed vertical rescue training at Forbes.
Over two weekends the six volunteers participated in essential training, expertly conducted by Group 314, with assistance from experienced SES vertical rescue operators.
Members that attended the training were Declan Laybutt and Heather Morgan from Grenfell.
While wet weather on the first weekend confined training to the inside of the shed at the Forbes Unit, the trainers
at Group 314 quickly adapted, ensuring that operators were able to practice ascending and descending techniques.
The second weekend brought more favourable weather, allowing the volunteers to utilise the training tower to learn techniques including how to safely lower, haul and use mechanical advantage in a range of situations.
Parkes Unit Commander, Inspector Jeff Field said that vertical rescue training is just one of the many skills SES volunteers can choose to develop.
“We also train to assist at
road crashes, land searches and, of course, for storms and floods,” he said.
“Thanks to our training, SES volunteers can offer effective help to someone who may be having the worst day of their life.
“New volunteers are always welcome. There are lots of roles depending on what you like and what you want to learn, and together we can make a significant impact in our community,” Inspector Field said.

PUBLIC NOTICE | COMPANY DAM
Weddin Shire Council advises residents and visitors that bluegreen algae has reappeared at Company Dam. We urge everyone to refrain from any contact with the water until further notice due to the presence of this algae. Blue-green algae naturally occurs in lakes and dams, thriving in warm, nutrient-rich waters with sunlight exposure. Recent rainfall followed by warmer temperatures has created favourable conditions for its growth. Unfortunately, this has led to increased levels at Company Dam. Blue-green algae impacts a number of lakes and dams across the state. Council Officers are actively monitoring the situation to ensure community safety. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation. For more information, please contact Council’s Environmental Services team on (02) 6343 1212.

EXTRAORDINARY MEETING
8 OCTOBER 2024
An Extraordinary Meeting will occur with the newly elected Council on Tuesday 8 October 2024 commencing at 4:00pm. The meeting can be livestreamed through the Weddin Shire Council YouTube channel. The extraordinary meeting will conduct the swearing in of new councillors by oath or affirmation. The election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will occur in this meeting.
FROM
THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK
This week, we are excited to witness the formal declaration of the newly elected Councillors, marking the official start of their journey. Following this, on 4 October 2024, Councillors will participate in their initial induction, which will cover essential knowledge and responsibilities. A comprehensive induction program will be delivered over the next six months to ensure our new Councillors are fully equipped with the skills and insights needed to govern effectively, including a two day induction process.
For those interested in understanding the skills and areas of focus that underpin our Councillors’ roles, I encourage you to explore our Councillor Capability Plan 2024–2028, which outlines the key capabilities and responsibilities expected of our elected representatives. You can view the plan here: https://www.weddin.nsw.gov.au/files/assets/public/v/1/council/ becoming-a-weddin-shire-councillor/20240701-councillorcapability-plan-2024-2028_1.pdf.
At the upcoming Council meeting, the newly elected Councillors will also take part in the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, key leadership roles that will help guide the Council’s work moving forward.
As General Manager, I am excited about the opportunity to work closely with this new Council as we continue delivering projects, services, and initiatives that benefit all residents of Weddin Shire. I encourage the community to stay engaged and informed as we embark on this new chapter for our Shire. Despite belief that popular elected mayors are those with the majority, this is not the case. Candidates must nominate to be in the contest for a popular elected mayor so voters have to vote twice in those elections – who they want on Council and then from the condense list of who they want to be the Mayor. Democracy allows for the community to pick the team, and the team to pick their captain. I very much look forward to working as a team.
Have a great week
Noreen Vu GENERAL MANAGER

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Travel plans could be interrupted by the reemergence of a workplace problem that was never quite fully resolved. Deal with it at once, then take off on a well-deserved trip.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects favor cultural activities for sensuous Bovines. Attend a concert or an art show. Better yet, create something yourself (a poem, perhaps?), and dedicate it to someone special.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Respect any doubts you might now be feeling about a new situation. They could be reflecting your inner awareness that some essential information might be missing. Check it out.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s important to start the new week with as clean of a slate as possible. Either complete all those unfinished tasks, or pass them on to others who would be more than happy to take them on.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to cut down on expenses and tame the urge to splurge. Applying some financial discipline now could help the Big Cat ride out a possible monetary crunch later on.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Money matters are dominant this week. Recheck your accounts and make sure they’re up-to-date. Also, pay more attention to personal issues before they become major problems.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might be tempted to employ the same tactics as your adversary, but this could backfire. Better to use the same balanced approach that has worked for you before and could work again.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A changing workplace environment could stir up confusion as well as apprehension. Best to ignore the rumors and get the facts. You could find that the changes bring positive elements.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21)
(d)
Communication is easier this week, as people are ready and eager to hear what you have to say. Also, check for possible technical problems before you start a new project.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Aspects favor change for the usually traditional Goat. Opening your mind to possibilities you had ignored could lead you to make decisions you once considered improbable.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Making personal as well as professional adjustments to changing conditions might be easier with more information explaining the hows and the whys of the situations in question.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With a growing tide of positive reactions to buoy your confidence, this could be the right time to put the finishing touches on your new project and get it well and truly launched.

Ken Dunbar has winning double at Grenfell Jockey Club Races
By COLIN HODGES

Orange based trainer Melissa Harrison supplied the other Ken Dunbar winner, On The Decs in the 1400 metres Mawhood’s IGA/Hilltops Equine Centre Maiden Plate.
Racing in fourth position, On The Decs ($4.20) then sprinted to an almost three lengths win over stablemate Diamond Sun (Will Stanley, $4.20) and Side Cash (Michael Heagney, $3.60).

“It helps when you can get a Group 1 jockey to ride your horse at a non-TAB country meeting ,“ Lachlan Dale said, after Deploy And Destroy won the 1400 metres Coopers Civil & Crushing/Crutcher Developments -Loaded Dog BM 58 Handicap at Grenfell. Lachlan Dale the foreman for his father, the Wangaratta, Victoria trainer Andrew Dale, was referring to jockey Cory Parish who is based at Seymour in Victoria. Formerly from New Zealand, Cory Parish won the 2017 Caulfield Cup on the David Hayes trained Boom Time and he has also won the G1 South Australian Derby.

Tough contest at home for Woodbridge women
■ From back page
After the break the Platypi went up a gear and virtually put the game out of reach of the Woodies with tries in the 36th, 38th, and 43rd minutes of play resulting in a 26-nil lead with 17 left on the clock.
The final score read Panorama 30 Woodbridge 4 but the game ended on a disappointing note for the visitors when their gun hooker Xanthe Booth suffered a serious leg injury in the dying stages of the clash.
The Woodbridge club would like to wish Xanthe a good and speedy recovery.
Next weekend there will be a general bye for all clubs due to the holiday long weekend and the following weekend (October 12 and 13) Woodbridge will be having another bye.
This means that Woodbridge won’t be back in action until Sunday, October 20 when they travel over to the Red Bend College to take on Lachlan (Forbes/Parkes).
There will be no under 18s game as Lachlan are not fielding a team in this age group this year.
On Saturday, October 26 Woodbridge will be back at Lawson Oval when the are hosting the Orange Vipers in all five age groups.
On a final note the Goannas would like to thank all those committee people, players, and supporters who helped make last Saturday a success including the ground set up, canteen and a playing surface that was presented in tip top condition.

Grenfell Jockey Club has an unrivalled reputation for the excellent way they treat trainers, owners and jockeys, evidenced by the big teams of horses brought the long distance from Victoria every year.
Andrew Dale had 7 starters while Don Dwyer from Seymour had 4 runners.
The huge smile said it all when Hannah Johnston returned after her career first winner, Play The Record in the 1000 metres Lachlan Fertilizers/KMWL/Forbes

Tough games for Woodbridge
By GARY HOLMES
LAST Saturday at Lawson Oval Grenfell, Woodbridge hosted the Panorama Platypi (Bathurst and surrounds) in round 3 of the Western Womens Rugby League competition.
The players and a healthy number of spectators were greeted by perfect conditions for footy.
Woodbridge had their only victory in the under 12s match winning 24-16 in a feisty affair that included three sin bins.
The under 12s are coached by Justin Gunn and one of the trainers is Steve Taylor who are both ex Grenfell Goannas First Grade captain/coaches.
In the under 14s game Panorama led by 12 nil after just 10 minutes of play but to the credit of the Woodbridge girls they fought back and with 20 minutes left on the clock they were only down by 18-10.
The Platypi finished the stronger of the two teams and scored three tries in the final 20 minutes to register a 34-10 victory.
The Panorama under 18s
scored three tries in the opening eight minutes and it looked like the Woodbridge girls were in for a tough day.
This match changed when Woodbridge used their bench and just after half-time it was anyone’s game with Panorama leading 20-16.
The closeness of the scores resulted in an increased intensity in this clash but it was the Platypi who prevailed 3016 in a spirited finish after scoring tries in the 45th and 55th minutes of play.
Woodbridge came up against an in-form Platypi under 18s outfit who came into this match after big wins in the first two rounds of the competition.
Panorama led this match 24 nil at half-time and they went on with the job in the second half to win 50-6 but all the Woodbridge girls tried hard for the full 60 minutes.
After a tight opening in the first stanza of the opens match the Platypi led 10 nil at half-time, a scoreline that may have flattered the visitors a fraction.
