Evac funds for Gooly

Gooloogong receives huge boost for new evacuation centre funding

MEMBER for Cootamundra Steph Cooke has announced an investment of $188,620 at Gooloogong Public School to establish a community evacuation centre at the school.

Ms Cooke said the project is being funded under the latest round of the Clubgrants Category 3 Infrastrucutre Program, which reinvests a contribution from the state’s registered clubs’ gaming machine profits, back into community projects.

“Both as the local member, and in my previous role as the state’s Emergency Services Minister, I know all too well the importance of having locations set up where people feel safe and looked after in times of need,” Ms Cooke said.

“As we know, during flooding events, areas in and around Gooloogong are at risk of inundation, so it’s vital that we have the resources in place to ensure all residents are catered for should similar events unfold in the future.

“The $188,620 in funding

will go towards the installation of a demountable building at Gooloogong Public School with a fully equipped kitchen, which can be used in conjunction with the school’s hall to provide a safe haven for locals.

“When not in use as an evacuation centre, the kitchen will also be utilised by students as a learning resource, making good use of the school’s vegetable garden.

“Of course flooding isn’t the only scenario requiring emergency response plans, with bushfires

also a threat during the summer months, so ensuring the community is well prepared, and that locals all know their roles during a disaster, provides a level of reassurance to the community,” she said.

Ms Cooke explained that the grants are funded through a rebate on the state’s registered clubs’ gaming machines.

“Clubgrants funding is available for projects across sport and recreation, emergency preparedness, and arts and culture,” Ms Cooke said.

A Betta Cowra CBD for locals

Cowra’s central business district has received a significant boost with the opening of Betta Electrical in Kendal Street.

The Betta franchise is owned and managed by Greg Nicholls, a former employee of Martins Bi-Rite Electrical which occupied the site up until the passing of Keith Martin in May last year.

Mr Martin’s passing and the closure of the iconic store on the corner of Kendal and Macquarie Streets left a huge dent in Cowra’s business sector.

The business had been in the Martin family for three generations

“Initially, a third party, approached me and said he was going to buy the building and asked if I‘d be interested in re-opening the old Martins store,” Mr Nicholls said of his move into business ownership.

With more than 20 years of experience in electrical sales with Martins Mr Nicholls told the building’s new owner, “I’d be more than interested in re-opening”.

His history in the business, he said, was one of the reasons why he made the decision.

“I had the backing, knew the business and I knew what the benefit was of hav-

ing this business in town. It had been a big loss to the town,” Mr Nicholls said.

“I could see what was happening, the town needed the store to re-open.

“It took a while with the purchase of the building but around the end of March (this year) the building’s new owner agreed to terms and again asked if I was interested in re-opening.”

The third party isn’t involved in the franchise, “It’s me, myself”, Mr Nicholls said.

“There’s been a few teething problems but I’m getting there.

“I’m just keen to get the store up and running, It’s going to be a slow build. I’m looking forward to it. It’s a great thing for the town.

“Everyone’s been saying they’re happy for me to be back,” he said.

While electrical goods sales are back in the historic site the servicing of electrical items previously offered through Martins isn’t making a return.

“We’ve had customers ask if I’ll be doing the service side of the old Martins business, but it’s just the store, the service part has closed, Peter (Martin) has retired,” Mr Nicholls explained.

Betta will be open 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12 noon Saturday’s.

The TUCSON is now more dynamic than ever with improved design and technology. It features a dual 12.3” Panoramic Curved Display with Bluelink™ that ensures a harmonious blend of technology and functionality at your fingertips. It’s the mid-size SUV, taken to the next level. ‘Towards Zero’ program to improve road safety

Road users in the Cootamundra electorate can expect to encounter increased construction activity as vital safety upgrades are rolled out through the second round of the Towards Zero: Safer Roads Program.

As part of the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan, the initiative aims to eliminate fatalities on New South Wales roads.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke expressed her support for the improvements, coinciding with the conclusion of Rural Road Safety Month, which was led by the Australian Road Safety Foundation.

“Two-thirds of all road fatalities occur on our regional roads,” Ms Cooke stated. “The impact of road trauma in these areas is profound, affecting tight-knit communities.”

Cooke, who travels on regional roads daily, emphasized the need for reliable infrastructure for both residents and businesses.

The program includes significant upgrades, such as:

- $18.82 million for road safety barriers and delineation improvements on Lachlan Valley Way in Cowra.

- $1.5 million for safety enhancements on the Hume Highway between Mittagong and Albury.

- $400,000 for improvements on the Newell Highway between Tocumwal and West Wyalong.

Ms Cooke highlighted that the Towards Zero initiative represents a commitment from both residents and the government to invest in infrastructure aimed at saving lives.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” she noted. “Your actions can make a significant difference in ensuring safe travels, especially given the long distances many of us drive.”

The Towards Zero: Safer Roads Program will allocate $70 million to councils across NSW for the fiscal years 2024/25 to 2026/27.

Riders roll into Woodstock to celebrate Woodstock Classic

MOTORCYCLES, the pub and rock music have always made a great combination, with the October long weekend seeing Woodstock’s Memorial Hall and Woodstock Hotel filled with riders from across the region, alongside visitors camping in the oldest commissioned race track in the country.

Organiser Danny Williams said the name Woodstock was synonymous with rock n roll, and that “Bikes are part of the furniture of Woodstock.”

Mr Williams emphasised the importance of investing back in the community, to ensure events like the Woodstock Classic can continue for years to come; “What we’ve done is set up this committee called Woodstock Revival. We’re trying to set up a war chest for a bigger event, but we’re sharing it. Any funds raised are kept for the next event but we’ll spread it through the village. The school’s trying to send kids overseas, we’ll help there, and Soldier’s Park needs maintenance - we can help there.”

While large festivals like Bluesfest and Splendor are facing challenges in big cities, Mr Williams says there’s room for more in towns and small halls across the region.

All of the hard yards put in by Woodstock Revival are part of a

broader mission to raise the profile of Woodstock and the festival, as well as maintenance of the Memorial Hall.

With performances from Keith Potger and others throughout the day, the festival was a success that Mr Williams hopes to repeat next year.

When the swimming season starts on November 9, swimmers will have access to the Canowindra pool from 6am to 7pm daily even if a pool attendant is not on duty.

“This initiative offers greater flexibility and increased usage of our pools, mirroring the success of similar programs in other councils, such as Snowy Valley and Warrumbungle Shire,” a spokesperson for Cabonne Council said.

Changes to pool infrastructure have taken place during the winter to allow swimmers this increased access.

The Canowindra Pool has also been undergoing pump room upgrades to reduce operational costs and replace aging pumps that affected its hours of operation last season.

Unsupervised access gates and security cameras have also been installed with the cameras allowing for remote monitoring when pool attendants are not present. The off-season has also seen the installation of compliant pool fencing to enhance the facility’s appearance and improve safety.

Canowindra swimmers interested in unsupervised pool membership can book via the Active World App or speak with pool staff when the new swim season gets underway on November 9. To receive an entry fob to

the pool swimmers will need to have a season ticket or a 10 visit pass.

For 10-visit pass hold, which can be topped up as many times as you like, the fob costs $2.50 as a one-time fee.

Under the new unsuper-

vised access swimmers cannot swim alone and must be 18 years of age or over.

“You must have another person with you at the facility when you swim,” Cabonne said.

“This can be a fellow swim-

mer, a friend, a family member, or even someone watching from the sidelines.

“If you are at the pool with only your children, you must ensure that you or they can contact emergency services if needed,” Cabonne said.

Normal pool hours at Canowindra, when pool attendants will be on hand, will be from 11am to 6.30pm Monday to Sunday. These hours are the planned staffed hours but may be subject to change. If staff are unavailable and on days when no staff are rostered the pool will be open to Unsupervised Hours pass holders.

Each season pass includes one free Unsupervised Pool Entry Pass fob.

For 10-visit pass holders, the fob costs $2.50 as a onetime fee.

Swimmers can top up the 10-visit pass an unlimited number of times without any additional fob cost.

Pool admission costs this season are $4.80 for adults, $3.80 for children and concession card holders, $2 for under school age children and $16 for a family.

A 10 visit pass is $43 for adults, $34 for children and concession card holders and $144 for a family.

All pool access season passes are available for $135 for adults, $97 for children and concession card holders while a family will pay $263.

“We aim to maximize public access to these facilities while managing operational costs,” Cabonne said of its new shire wide unsupervised access program.

October Probus Meeting Notes

Our general meeting on Friday September 13th was opened by president Margie Ryan, welcoming members.

Georgie Cranny introduced our guest speaker, Paul Smith. Paul said yesterday he was Deputy Mayor, today he is just a citizen, and tomorrow, he will again be a councillor.

As we only had 8 people nominated there will be a by-election on 23rd of November, if more than one person nominates for council.

Paul told us of a council delegation of Ruth Fagan, Bill West, Paul Devery and himself on a visit to Japan, although he was not able to see much of Japan as it was a strict itinerary and they had one function after the other.

UNCOVERING the past is rather like putting together pieces of a puzzle without the guiding illustration and hoping that all the pieces are where they should be. Of course, if one piece is out of order the whole picture may be a jumble and need rearranging.

One very active archaeologist of the nineteenth century was Sir Flinders Petrie. Petrie was an unusual character who happened to be the grandson of the great navigator, Matthew Flinders, the man responsible for mapping the Australian coastline and surrounds. Petrie spent a lot of time in Egypt searching for clues to its intriguing past and one of his finds was a famine stele found on the island of Sehel, a large island located in the Nile about three kilometres southwest of Aswan. The stele, dated 27th century BC, tells the story of Imhotep saving Egypt from a 7-year famine and buying up land for his Pharaoh, Djoser (Netierikhet).

Paul represented Cowra at the at the funeral of the son of the designer of the Japanese Gardens, the day following their arrival in Japan.

Details showed the funeral to be very different to those found in Australia.

POINTS OF INTEREST

The 80th anniversary of the breakout was very successful.

A new preschool will be built in short street for Carinya, as a DA was passed by council at Monday night’s meeting.

The Council is one director short and is having trouble filling the position.

After answering questions from members, Georgia once again thanked Paul for his time and for the very interesting talk.

Competition winners were: 1st,

Shirley Wright, and 2nd Mary Apps, with Mary winning best dressed ‘Lady In Red, White & Blue. Sandra had a flag display and spoke of Flag Day, being September 3rd each year. We had 35 members present, with 5 apologies and 2 guests, Judith Jonkins and Robyn Brown. Members badges were presented to new members. Member Ruth Harper was presented with a bunch of flowers as she is leaving Cowra and moving down the coast. Those members going on the Merimbula trip, dates have been changed as they have encountered some problems, with the trip now planned to be May 2025.

October, Friday 11th Meeting - our guest speaker will be Carol from Young.

October is Tourist Month,

FOCUS ON LIVING “History and Mystery” and

Petrie’s find records an event rather like the account of Joseph in the Book of Genesis in the Bible, where Joseph was authorized to use the grain gathered from seven years of plenty to make provision for seven years of famine which were to follow. The famine led to the Egyptians selling their drought-stricken lands and Joseph buying them for Pharaoh.

But there is a far more tantalizing find by Petrie in the ancient workers’ town of el-Lahun or Kahun, buried beneath the sands of Egypt near the Pyramid of the Pharaoh, Sesosteris III. It is understood the community was a Semitic slave town for the Pharaoh’s tomb workers. Later archaeologists studying the site suggest that the departure of the workmen was “sudden and unpremeditated”. Unexplained finds were wooden boxes buried under the floors of the houses and containing skeletons of infants,

members bring along an Australian souvenir of your holidays, a photo or story. Also, Halloween is celebrated in October - join in and bring something along to display.

October is also Probus Month, with members agreeing to have morning tea at the Japanese Gardens. This will be the fourth Friday in October - the 25th. Details will be provided at the meeting.

Hostesses are Nerida Keay, Rae Dowd, Judy Amos, and Lorraine Francis.

First President of Cowra Ladies Probus Club, Betty Barratt has passed away, our sympathies have been sent to her family.

A meeting was held at Cowra Services Club, on Wednesday October 19th, 1988 to form Ladies Probus Club. This meeting was organised by Cowra Rotary Club.

sometimes up to three to a box, with ages at death of only a few months old.

The book of Genesis in the Bible tells us that the Israelites, Semites of the line of Shem, were enslaved in Egypt where they were put to work on the building programmes that Pharaoh commissioned. The Bible reports that at one point during Israel’s sojourn there Pharaoh ordered the deaths of male babies born to Israelite woman. It also reports that when the Israelites left Egypt, it was a sudden and unpredictable exodus.

There are differences of opinion about chronologies in ancient history, but they are, nevertheless, fascinating finds and with astonishing parallels to Old Testament records.

The Cowra Church of Christ sponsors this article. The church meets on the second and last Sunday of the month at the Nguluway Meeting Room between the Library and the Art Gallery, Darling Street, Cowra. Starting times: Church Service 10:00am, Morning Tea 11:00am. Everyone is welcome. Enquiries phone: 0439 401 813, or e-mail: cowrachurchofchrist@gmail.com.

Canowindra swimmers will have unsupervised access to the town’s pool this season.

103rd Morongla Show sparkles

The 103rd Morongla Show has come and gone for another year with a sensational showing for the boutique event that attracts more and more visitors from far and wide.

The Show was opened by Darcy Howard, NSW Young Auctioneer of the Year winner, followed by a President’s address from Mr. David Langfield.

There were Show Day Awards and Special Awards not to mention plenty to do for the kids including rides, sweets and games including Bat the Rat, a Kid’s TugO-War and Colour Run. There was also lego displays, music and animals such as baby lambs.

The Man Made Chocolate Cake Auction was again one of the most popular attractions as it is every year with all proceeds from the event going to Cowra Riding for the Disabled. The horse program also attracted interest from entrants and patrons with strong support for all the days events from all and sundry.

The pavilion saw some tightly judged competitions in art, photography and cooking with barely a whisker separating the top from the remaining crop. The same could be said in the yards too with cattle judging which also saw some special entries in what is fast becoming one of the flagship events at the Morongla Show.

From all reports it was a top day all round and a great lead into the 143rd Cowra Spring Show on October 18 and 19.

Congratulations on 30 Yea rs in Business on Years

A NEW CHAPTER AFTER A LONG HAUL

It’s a bittersweet moment for Phil and Peggy Beer as they prepare to pass the torch after nearly 30 years of building their courier and taxi truck business into a transport company that spans most of NSW and beyond.

From humble beginnings with just a 5-tonne Pantec truck, they have expanded Cowra Freight to include 9 prime movers, 10 trailers, a B-double, along with multiple rigid trucks, small delivery vehicles, and forklifts.

Now, Phil and Peggy are ready to hand over the reins to a younger couple eager to take on the established business and continue its growth while serving its wonderful clientele.

Jake and Amelia Spicer, who have worked with Cowra Freight as a subcontractor and Cummins mechanic, bring valuable experience in the transport industry and solid business acumen. It’s clear that Jake and Amelia are the perfect fit to lead Cowra Freight into the future, ensuring they continue to meet the high expectations of their valued clients.

Cattle Dog Champs a first of it’s kind at Cowra Show

THE Southern Cattle Dog Championship is the first of it’s kind in Australia incorporating a qualification system for dogs to come into the second round of competition from other trials and also having a first round of heats for all other dogs.

There will be fresh obstacles that most have not seen in Australia and the trial is intended

to use a high level of stockmanship and find the best dog for the job. With competitors set to come from up near Rockhampton QLD and the judge also travelling from there as well the competition is fierce.

Running under the Cowra Show Society banner has allowed the organisers to make a point of difference and not stick within certain boundaries set by the associations.

This has allowed for change that many competitors are seeking and allowing us to try new things. We certainly couldn’t do it without the sponsorship and donations from the following businesses: Cowra Veterinary Centre, Coota Park Blue-E, Thompson’s Livestock Transport, DNW Livestock Services, Central West Canine Breeding Services, Emerge Ag and Lachlan Valley Contracting.

Change of venue for launch

IN just over a week Tough is Not Enough will be launched in Cowra by former pro boxer and Cowra boy, Stephen Lovett.

Due to demand, Stephen Lovett has moved his book launch from Club Cowra to the Club Cowra Sound Stage at Cowra Show.

Times will remain the same but Stephen has felt it important to support a community event like the Show.

“This community has always supported me,” said Stephen. Club Cowra Operations Manager Marc McLeish agreed, saying the change opens up more people.

“I thought it would respectful for me to be a part of it and help Stephen so it makes me proud to be able to hold the book launch there,” Club Cowra Operations Manager Marc McLeish said.

“The change of venue makes absolute sense and is a testament to Stephen’s sense of belonging to the town. He really is a Cowra boy at heart”.

Tough is Not EnoughHometown Book Launch will take place at the Club Cowra Sound Stage Saturday October 19 @ 5pm.

Erambie teams come up short at Koori Knockout in Bathurst

MOST of the Erambie Allblacks

Men’s and Women’s sides failed to get out of the gates at the Bathurst 2024 Koori Knockout last weekend.

Only the U17 Boys and Girls sides progressed beyond Round 1 at the popular event with the Boys going down to La Perouse 36-0 after accounting for South Taree in the opening round. The U17s Girls made it to the semi finals after an opening round bye aided their cause. The rest mattered little however as they were stopped by Mindabirra Warriors 32-0 in a game that didn’t give a true indication of how close the match was with only some late tries blowing the result out. U13s through to U15s failed to advance beyond the group stages in both Boys and Girls as well in a tough carnival for the Allblacks.

The Men’s side played Kamilaroi in Pool C to open their account but like the remaining sides, were unable to progress to the money rounds of the tournament.

Despite the early exits, all teams were a credit to their people and their jersey!

Lady golfers come second in Wellington

Cowra Lady Golfers Pennants Team travelled to Wellington recently to contest the Western Districts Finals on a tight track in perfect conditions. Both teams had won their way through to the decider with some sensational early round form. Orange Duntryleague, one of the fancies of the competition, proved why they were the team to beat, accounting for Cowra in a strongly contested final played in good spirit. It was a monumental effort by the Cowra team who fought gallantly throughout the year to reach the Western Districts finals.

In Division Three of

the Silver Spoons Final, Carole Doyle with an outstanding score of 40 points in the Stableford, was beaten on a count back coming second to R. Darcy of Warren. In the Cowra Mixed Foursome Championships last month a big congratulations to the Foursomes Championship Nett winners, Warwick and Lorraine Stubbing on 67 nett, while runners up were Harold Bryant and Carole Doyle on 67.5. A big well done also to Cowra Junior, Pippa Newham in her first Cowra Mixed Foursomes Event and good luck in these school holidays at the Jack Newton school of junior golf in the the Hunter Valley!

Ekstraliga2 final in Poland last week.

Kurtz in Polish position

BRADY Kurtz has done it again after captaining Polish team, Rybnik to the Ekstraliga2 final in Poland alongside fellow Aussie, Rohan Tungate in a scintillating display that left their rivals in their wake and further confirmed Kurtz as the next big thing in motorcycle sport.

The Cowra rider also rides for a British team called

Kurtz steers Rybnik to victory in 2024 Ekstraliga 2

Belle Vue Aces who also enjoyed success this season, and he has now tasted victory with both teams. Klub Sportowy ROW Rybnik, also known as ROW Rybnik, is a Polish motorcycle speedway team based in Rybnik, which currently competes in 1. Liga. Rybnik is one of the oldest and most successful teams in Polish

speedway having won the league championship on twelve occasions. ROW is one of the several clubs of the once united ROW Rybnik multi-sports club.

In even better news, Kurtz already has an action packed 2025 on his racing calendar qualifying for the Speedway Grand Prix.

The 2025 Individual

Speedway World Championship Grand Prix Qualification or GP Challenge was a series of motorcycle speedway meetings held during 2024 to determine the riders that qualified for the 2025 Speedway Grand Prix.

The series consisted of four qualifying rounds at Abensberg, Debrecen,

Lonigo and Žarnovica and the Grand Prix Challenge at Pardubice. Preliminary qualification events included the Grand Prix qualifier in Denmark.

The four riders that qualified were Brady Kurtz, Anders Thomsen, Dominik Kubera and Max Fricke.

These riders progressed to the 2025 Speedway Grand

Prix, where they were joined by the riders who finished in the leading positions of the 2024 Speedway Grand Prix. There will be four places to gain via this year’s Grand Prix Challenge and Kurtz was near the top of the pile again in a series of tremendous displays throughout the course of the year.

At this rate, the sky is the limit for the young Cowra flyer!

ABOUT fourteen years ago, Jackie and Geoff Yeo had begun restoration of Canowindra’s Finn’s Store in the heart of Canowindra.

With the town moving through extreme weather events, Canowindra had tenaciously hung on in spite of challenges in retail.

After one year hiatus, Jackie and Geoff Yeo have now reopened their doors to show a sprawling cafe as before - but now with a combined workspace with stallholders selling produce, wine, art and furnishings all available to purchase. If you’re sitting somewhere at Finns, chances are one of the beautiful objects nearby you is available for sale.

“15 years ago we discovered the old Finns Building needing love, attention and most of all a fresh new business venture for the town. We opened a large retail space with a licensed café providing visitors and locals alike a meeting place. Finns Store became central to the community. People came to enjoy coffee, meals, and a variety of shopping including clothing, jewellery, furniture and homewares with a focus on providing local artists a space to show their art.” says Jackie, who until now along with Geoff Yeo, had taken a break running the busy cafe, retail and gallery space.

“It was time to take a break and consider what was next for ourselves.” said Jackie. “We felt during the time we were closed the Canowindra community had lost a special meeting place, we noticed some other small businesses close.”

Jackie said that herself and Geoff wanted to offer fresh and young creators the support to grow.

“From here the idea of turning the shop into a weekly marketplace developed. We wanted to create a place for local producers and creators to showcase themselves with little start up cost but the opportunity to sell their wares. We also wanted to give Finns Store back it’s sense of community, by connecting people with others to

share ideas, collaborate and have fun.”

Geoff Yeo, a lawyer in his day job, is again back on the tools as a barista making coffees for patrons alongside the many stalls staffed by local business owners. Showcased this past weekend was Edellan Flowers, Canowindra Progress Association & The Blue Bowerbird Association.

One of the stall holders, Megan Morton from Edellan flower farm,

says it was a great opportunity to showcase her work.

“It was a coffee shop before, and Jackie’s come up with this amazing idea to bring us all collaborate together, and show what we can create and grow in the area.”

Megan says as someone who only grows or sources nearby - Cargo, Cudal, Cowra and Cumnock - it’s a great opportunity to keep things local.

“Just the ability to be amongst the

community for a day a week is going to grow my business even further. I do weddings, funerals and floristry for the town, so it’s going to be great to meet some lovely people.” said Megan.

Current stallholders provide local produce, locally made pottery, pre loved furniture and homewares, local flowers, interior designers, bakers, coffee and more. Opening Saturday mornings from 9:00, stallholder enquiries are welcomed.
