Nata nel 1998, Fondazione Senza Frontiere – ONLUS promuove progetti di aiuto e di evoluzione autogestita in paesi in via di sviluppo economico. Tra questi, il progetto “Rarahil” a Kirtipur, una cittadina non lontana da Kathmandu, la capitale del Nepal.

La scuola, ideata e sviluppata grazie all'iniziativa dell'alpinista e naturalista Fausto De Stefani, ospita circa mille bambini e ragazzi dai 4 ai 18 anni.

The foundation “Senza Frontiere” – ONLUS supports aid and selfdevelopment projects in developing countries, like the “Rarahil” project in Kirtipur, a small village not far from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal.

The school was conceived and devoloped thanks to the inventiveness of Fausto De Stefani , mountaineer and naturalist. It hosts approximately one thousand children from 4 to 18 years of age.

Il primo equipaggio italiano a compiere il Passaggio a Nord Ovest, da Ovest a Est. Il Plum ha concluso la sua impresa, arrivando ad Aasiaat in Groenlandia, dopo 33 giorni di dura navigazione e più di 3.500 miglia percorse. È il primo equipaggio italiano a riuscirci, ed è stato anche il più veloce nel 2017.

The first Italian crew to complete the Northwest Passage, from west to east. Plum ended the voyage, arriving in Aasiaat, Greenland, after 33 days of hard sailing and having travelled over 3,500 miles. This is the first Italian crew to have achieved this and it was also the fastest in 2017.

Enrico Tettamanti è un marinaio che viene dalla montagna, da Pomarolo, Trentino Alto Adige. Inizia a navigare a vela da piccolo assieme ai genitori, e da 20 anni è skipper professionista. Ha navigato per più di 220.000 miglia in tutto il mondo, doppiato sette volte Capo Horn e fatto 20 traversate oceaniche, a latitudini diverse. Nel 2002 ha dato vita al suo primo progetto Kamana (su un bellissimo Cigale 16), “la vela estrema alla portata di tutti”, andando a navigare nelle zone più remote del pianeta.

Da allora Kamana Sailing Expedition (nel 2011 è arrivato Plum, un Solaris 72) è sinonimo di esplorazione e spedizione, cercando di raggiungere i posti dove solo pochi vanno. Esploratore d'animo e di professione, è in grado di accompagnare chiunque in una delle sue tante avventure, in totale sicurezza. Uno dei pochi skipper al mondo ad aver raggiunto tutte le mete polari più importanti, l'Antartide, la Groenlandia e l'Alaska. Grande sportivo e sempre pronto a condividere le sue passioni con gli ospiti a bordo. Dal windsurf all'alpinismo, dalla pesca d'apnea al parapendio, dal kitesurf al freeride ski, usando sempre come base la barca.

Enrico e' sposato con Giulia e insieme navigano a tempo pieno in giro per il mondo dal 2011. All'equipaggio si sono aggiunti i loro due bimbi: Kai, che in hawaiano significa “Oceano”, e Aua, che in lingua Inuit significa “piccolo spirito di Terra”. Kai, in grembo alla sua mamma e una volta nato, ha navigato tutti gli oceani del Mondo, comprese le acque del famoso passaggio a Nordovest, a poco piu' di un anno di vita.

Concepito al termine dell'avventura del passaggio, il fratellino Aua deve il suo nome alla tradizione del popolo Inuit, secondo il quale un Aua e' un piccolo e potente spirito che vive sulle sponde del mare, pronto a guidare e aiutare i navigatori artici.

Tutti insieme sono salpati a bordo di Kamana 3.3, un trimarano innovativo costruito con una particolare attenzione per la gestione e produzione di energie rinnovabili, nell'estate del 2019.

Dal mar Mediterraneo, dopo 6000 miglia di emozioni indimenticabili vissute assieme ai propri bambini, sono arrivati alle Bahamas.

Il nuovo progetto Kamana 3.3 e' quello di raggiungere gli angoli più remoti del Pianeta a livello tropicale e sub tropicale, con l'intento di andare a conoscere le comunità piu' isolate che popolano gli arcipelaghi meno conosciuti.

Un nuova avventura che in primis vuole essere educativa per i loro bimbi e per tutti gli amici che regolarmente li raggiungono per condividere queste esperienze straordinarie.

Enrico Tettamanti is a sailor who comes from the mountains, from Pomarolo, Trentino Alto Adige. He started sailing as a child with his parents and has been a professional skipper for 20 years. He has sailed over 220,000 miles around the world, rounded Cape Horn seven times and made 20 ocean crossings at different latitudes. In 2002 he launched his first project, Kamana (on a beautiful Cigale 16), “extreme sailing within everybody's reach”, travelling to the most remote areas of the planet.

Since then Kamana Sailing Expedition - Plum, the Solaris 72 boat, arrived in 2011 is synonymous with exploration and expedition, venturing to places where only a few people go. An explorer by spirit and profession, Enrico can accompany anyone on one of his many adventures, in complete safety. He is one of the few skippers in the world to have reached all the most important polar destinations: Antarctica, Greenland and Alaska. A great sportsman, he is always ready to share his interests with his guests. From windsurfing to mountaineering, from spearfishing to paragliding, from kitesurfing to freeride skiing - always using the boat as a base.

Enrico is married to Giulia and together they have been sailing around the world full time since 2011. Later their two children joined the crew: Kai, meaning “ocean” in Hawaiian, and Aua, meaning “little spirit of the Earth” in Inuit. Kai, from when he was in the womb and, then, soon after he was born, has sailed all world's oceans, including the famous Northwest Passage. Conceived at the end of this adventure, his little brother Aua owes his name to Inuit traditions - Aua is a small, powerful spirit living on the sea shore who guides and helps Arctic navigators.

In the summer of 2019, they all sailed on Kamana 3.3, an innovative trimaran built with the production and management of renewable energy in mind.

From the Mediterranean Sea, after 6,000 miles of unforgettable experiences shared with their children, they arrived in the Bahamas.

The aim of the new Kamana 3.3 is to reach the remotest corners of the Planet at tropical and sub-tropical latitudes, in order to get to know the most isolated communities populating these lesser known archipelagos.

A new adventure that, first and foremost, would like to be an educational journey for their children and all the friends who regularly join them to share such extraordinary experiences.

IL PASSAGGIO A NORDOVEST THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE

L'IDEA

THE IDEA

Il passaggio a Nord Ovest è uno dei grandi miti dei navigatori. Collega due Oceani, Pacifico e Atlantico, nell'emisfero boreale passando quindi a Nord del Canada, in territorio Artico. Una volta impossibile o difficilissima, con il surriscaldamento climatico degli ultimi vent'anni è diventata un'impresa sempre ardua, ma affrontabile.

Da chi ha conoscenze ed esperienza sufficienti.

Il più famoso e il più percorso è il passaggio da Est ad Ovest, meno battuto è quello in senso opposto. Quello realizzato da Kamana Sailing Expedition.

The Northwest Passage is one of the greatest myths among sailors. It links two oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic in the Northern Hemisphere, and then passes to the north of Canada, in Arctic territory.

Once an impossible or very difficult route, over the last twenty years, as a result of climate warming, it is an equally hard, but now manageable challenge. By someone with enough knowledge and experience, that is.

The most famous and most popular route is the passage from east to west, while the less travelled one goes in the opposite direction. This is the one taken by Kamana Sailing Expedition.

LA ROTTA Kamana Expedition prima di arrivare alle alte latitudini era stata a Baja California per la stagione invernale 2016/2017. Salpata da La Paz il 10 maggio per Honolulu (Hawaii) e il 5 giugno per Dutch Harbour, nelle isole Aleutine, in Alaska. Da qui un trasferimento 650 miglia più a Nord, a Nome sempre in Alaska, nel mare di Bering.

Da lì ha aspettato la “finestra meteo/ghiacci” giusta per iniziare la rotta verso l'Atlantico, via Mar Artico: è partita il 21 luglio.

Il percorso è quello definito Route 6, la rotta più sicura, che viene compiuta in entrambe le direzioni. Ci sono in totale sette rotte, ed è interessante (e inquietante) notare che una volta ce n'era una sola, molto a Nord. Poi lo scioglimento dei ghiacci polari ha aperto nuove vie.

Da Nome Kamana ha attraversato lo stretto di Bering tra capo Dežnëv, il punto più a Est del continente asiatico, e capo Principe di Galles, il punto più a Ovest del continente americano.

Ha poi messo la prua ad Est, attraversando il mare Beaufort, a nord

THE ROUTE Before reaching such high latitudes, Kamana Expedition spent the 2016/2017 winter season in Baja California. The expedition sailed from La Paz on 10 May for Honolulu (Hawaii) and on 5 June for Dutch Harbour in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. From here it transferred 650 miles further north to Nome, still in Alaska, in the Bering Sea. Here the Kamana crew waited for the right “weather window/ice window" to start its journey to the Atlantic via the Arctic Sea: it sailed on 21 July.

This route is known as Route 6, the safest route, which can be taken in both directions. There are a total of seven routes and it is interesting (and worrying) to note that there was once only one, much further north; melting polar ice having opened up new passages.

From Nome Kamana crossed the Strait of Bering between Cape

Poi rotta ancora a Est verso Gjoa Haven su King William Island e poi di nuovo Nord per passare nel Canale di Fort Ross (tra Gibson Island e Somerset Island) per poi passare a Nord dell'Isola di Baffin e entrare nella baia omonima. Quindi è arrivata nello Stretto di Davis, di fronte alla Groenlandia, in Atlantico, e poi infine Nuuk, la capitale della Groenlandia.

Nel complesso sono 2.500 miglia da Nome a Lancaster Sound che segna il completamento del passaggio a NW e 3.500 fino a Nuuk. La rotta, nel dettaglio è: Bering Strait, Chukchi sea, Beaufort Sea, Amundsen Gulf, Corination Gulf, Simpson Strait, Rae Strait, Bellot Strait, Prince Regent Inlet, Lancaster Sound, Davis Strait.

Dezhnev, the easternmost point on the Asian continent, and Cape Prince of Wales, the westernmost point on the American continent.

It then pointed its bow east, crossing the Sea Beaufort, north of Alaska.

It entered Canadian Arctic territory and stopped in Cambridge Bay, on Victoria Island, where Enrico, Camilla, Marcello and Massimo were joined by the rest of the crew. Then Kamana set course again, travelling eastward towards Gjoa Haven on King William Island and then sailed north again, passing through the Fort Ross Canal (between Gibson Island and Somerset Island). Finally north of Baffin Island, Kamana entered the bay of the same name, then arriving at the Davis Strait, facing Greenland in the Atlantic, and Nuuk, Greenland's capital.

Altogether, there are 2,500 miles from Nome to Lancaster Sound which marks the completion of the transition to NW and 3,500 miles to Nuuk. In detail, the route is as follows: Bering Strait, Chukchi sea, Beaufort Sea, Amundsen Gulf, Corination Gulf, Simpson Strait, Rae Strait, Bellot Strait, Prince Regent Inlet, Lancaster Sound and Davis Strait.

LE DATE… UNA FINESTRA DI TEMPO MOLTO BREVE In questa zona del mondo è tutto completamente ricoperto di ghiaccio da circa il 20 settembre a circa 20 luglio. È dalla metà di luglio in poi che Kamana ha potuto partire, aspettando le condizioni meteo favorevoli. Dal 20 agosto il tempo da quelle parti inizia ad essere perturbato e poi, una volta arrivati in Atlantico, bisogna fare in fretta a trovare un posto sicuro, dalla fine di settembre inizia infatti la stagione degli uragani.

In sostanza il momento buono, quello per il passaggio più a Nord, è tra il 20 di luglio e il 15 agosto. In particolare il 2017 sembrava essere una stagione molto favorevole per l'attraversamento del passaggio a NW (e purtroppo pessimo per il nostro pianeta), ma il mese di maggio è stato contrassegnato da molte burrasche e abbondanti nevicate che

THE DATES...

A VERY SHORT WINDOW OF TIME In this part of the world everything is completely covered in ice from about 20 September to approximately 20 July. Kamana was able to leave from mid-July onwards, depending on favourable weather conditions. From 20 August the weather here begins to be unsettled and then, once the Atlantic is reached, a safe place must be found in hurry as the hurricane season begins at the end of September.

In short, the best moment, the one for most of the northern passage routes, is between 20 July and 15 August. In particular, the 2017 season appeared to be favourable for the NW crossing (and, unfortunately, bad for our planet). However, the month of May was

COSA SIGNIFICA TENTARE IL PASSAGGIO A NW? - Il ghiaccio, ovviamente, è il fattore principale da tenere sotto controllo. Per misurare la sua presenza si usano due indicatori principali, la copertura (in percentuale) e lo spessore (in centimetri). Ci sono dei siti specializzati per avere le “Ice Charts”. Su Kamana Expedition, grazie a sistemi satellitari all'avanguardia, sono in grado di fare analisi meteo approfondite ma, per avere un ulteriore confronto e un supporto da dei professionisti utilizzano il servizio di Commander's Weather. Da anni Enrico Tettamanti, per le traversate importanti, utilizza i loro preziosi servizi.

Il rilevamento avviene grazie ai satelliti.

Serve che ci sia una copertura massima del 30%, e uno spessore massimo di 15 cm.

– Non bisogna restare bloccati, soprattutto per uno scafo in vetroresina come quello di Kamana Expedition. Ecco che bisogna calcolare con precisione se, una volta iniziata la traversata, continuare nel tentativo di passaggio o se tornare indietro e quindi individuare il punto di “non ritorno”. Esistono porti dove “svernare”, ma per gli scafi in vtr è sostanzialmente inaffrontabile.

– In quanti, in passato? La statistica dice circa il 20% sul totale dei

WHAT IS INVOLVED WHEN ATTEMPTING THE NW PASSAGE? - Ice is, of course, the main factor to be monitored.

Two main indicators are used to measure the presence of ice: coverage (in percentage) and thickness (in centimeters). Some sites specialise in providing "Ice Charts". On the Kamana Expedition, thanks to state-of-the-art satellite systems, they are able carry out detailed weather analyses but, for additional information and support from professionals, they use Commander's Weather. For years Enrico Tettamanti has been using this valuable service for important crossings.

The readings are carried out with the help of satellites. A maximum coverage of 30%, and a maximum thickness of 15 cm is needed.

– It is important not to get stuck, especially for fibreglass hulls like that of the Kamana Expedition. Therefore it is essential, once the crossing has started, to make a precise calculation as to whether the attempt should be continued or whether to go back and identify the point of "no return". There are ports where it is possible to "winter", but this is not an option for fibreglass hulls.

- How many past attempts have succeeded? According to statistics, about 20% of all attempts. When considering only the most

Quando l'acqua è libera le medie ovviamente si alzano molto, fino a 150/180 miglia al giorno (circa 7 nodi) anche quando c'è la nebbia, non si può perdere tempo vista la brevità della finestra meteo disponibile.

– La temperatura media è di 0/5°, ma il riscaldamento di bordo è molto efficiente. Un aspetto positivo è che c'è luce 24 ore al giorno.

Uno dei problemi principali è la nebbia, spesso fitta e persistente, soprattutto sul tratto orientale del passaggio. Il mare all'opposto, generalmente non alza tantissima onda, si naviga in zone protette. Il punto più impegnativo, per questo aspetto , non a caso, è quello iniziale a Punta Barrow (l'angolo più in alto e a Ovest dell'Alaska) dove si fa sentire il fetch di tutto il Mare Glaciale Artico.

- Those who sail from west to east, like Kamana, must be especially conservative in their calculations. The ice opens first to the west and then to the east, which means the passage can be attempted earlier but, at the same time, the route back closes earlier, too.

- Navigation relies mainly on a motor engine. Kamana Expedition expected to travel about 70-80 miles per day when there is ice present (travelling at about 3 knots of approach speed). When the water is free of ice, the average obviously goes up a lot, to 150-180 miles per day (at about 7 knots), even when there is fog; you cannot waste time because of the short weather window available.

- The average temperature is 0-5°, but the heating on board is very efficient. One positive aspect is the 24-hour-a-day light.

One of the main problems is the frequent persistent dense fog, especially on the eastern stretch of the passage. The sea, on the other hand, is not usually choppy and you sail in protected areas. The most challenging part, not surprisingly, is the initial section at Barrow Point (the highest and westernmost corner of Alaska) where you can feel the fetch of the entire Arctic Ocean.

A differenza della maggior parte delle altre barche che navigano alle latitudini estreme non è ne' in alluminio ne' in acciaio, ma in vetroresina.

It has 5 cabins, it is 21 meters long, 5.64 wide, displacing 43 tons with a draught of 3 meters, designed and then optimised to sail anywhere - from the Poles to the Equator - in maximum safety and autonomy (it has a water reserve of 2,000 litres and a 1,500 lt diesel fuel capacity). Unlike most other boats sailing at extreme latitudes it is made of fiberglass, rather than aluminium or steel.

ON-BOARD EQUIPMENT

A bordo ci sono un generatore da 17,5 kW, un impianto di riscaldamento Webasto a gasolio (oltre a quello dell'aria condizionata). A bordo ci sono anche un sacco di “giochi”: 5 kitesurf, un windsurf, un kayak, 4 kit completi per le immersioni, con compressore Bauer e bombole da 12 litri; c'è poi una dotazione completa per fare qualsiasi ripresa o fotografia, anche sott'acqua o dall'aria (i droni sono tre); c'è, soprattutto una dotazione professionale di strumenti per navigazione, sicurezza e per le comunicazioni, tra cui: due radar, tre satellitari (un Iridium Pilot con stazione fissa a bordo per voce e dati alta velocità, un'altra dock station con un Iridium Extreme, per dati/voce ed un Iridium Extreme per emergenza), PC di bordo con MaxSea per la cartogarfia. E poi Epirb, Ais, Ais Mobile e l'InReach di Garmin (con la casa americana c'una partnership per la strumentazione).

Tutto l'equipaggiamento tecnico personale (cerata, intimo termico, secondo strato…) è stato fornito da Montura, che ha studiato molti capi ad hoc per questa spedizione. Enrico Tettamanti è testimonial della linea nautica di Montura, marchio di altissima qualità e punto di riferimento per la realizzazione di capi tecnici per la montagna.

On board there is a 17.5 kW generator and a Webasto diesel heating system (in addition to air conditioning). There are also a lot of "games" on board: 5 kitesurfs, one windsurf, one kayak, 4 complete diving kits with a Bauer compressor and 12-litre cylinders; there is also a complete set of equipment to film and take all kinds of photographs, even underwater or from the air (there are three drones). More importantly, there professional equipment for navigation, safety and communications, including: two radars, three satellites (an Iridium Pilot with fixed station on board for voice and high speed data, another dock station with an Iridium Extreme for data/voice and an Iridium Extreme for emergencies) and a computer on-board with MaxSea so ware for cartography. The boat is also equipped with Epirb, Ais, Ais Mobile and Garmin's InReach (there is a partnership with the American company for instruments).

All personal technical equipment (waxed, thermal underwear, second layers...) was provided by Montura who designed many outfits specifically for this expedition. Enrico Tettamanti sponsors the Montura nautical line, a high-quality brand and a reference point for the manufacture of technical mountain clothing.

CHI HA FATTO PER PRIMO IL PASSAGGIO A NORD OVEST?

WHO WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO CROSS THE NW PASSAGE?

Fu il norvegese Roald Amundsen che impiegò tre anni, dal 1903 al 1906, sul GjØa un peschereccio per la pesca delle aringhe convertito alla nobile impresa (che partì appena in tempo, prima di essere bloccata dai creditori che volevano indietro i loro soldi).

I primi a riuscirci in un solo anno furono i canadesi della Reale Polizia a cavallo, solo nel 1944, con lo schooner St. Roch.

Il primo diportista a riuscirci? Willy de Roos, Nel giugno 1977 con il suo 13 metri Williwaw, battente bandiera belga. De Roos non solo fece il passaggio, ma continuo “dritto” fino al suo ritorno in Belgio passando da Capo Horn, fu quindi il primo non professionista anche a circumnavigare tutte le Americhe.

The Canadians of the Royal Mounted Police were the first to cross the Northwest Passage in a single year, in 1944, with the schooner St. Roch.

Enrico Tettamanti è un marinaio che viene dalla montagna, da Pomarolo, nel Trentino. Naviga sin da piccolo, da 20 anni è skipper professionista, ha navigato per più di 190.000 miglia in tutto il mondo.

Ha doppiato sette volte Capo Horn e fatto 20 traversate oceaniche, alle varie latitudini. Nel 2002 ha dato vita al suo primo progetto Kamana (su un bellissimo Cigalle 16), la vela estrema alla portata di tutti, andando a navigare nelle zone più remote del pianeta.

Da allora Kamana Expedition (nel 2011 è arrivato Plum, il Solaris 72) è sinonimo di esplorazione e spedizione, andare nei posti dove solo pochi vanno. Esploratore d'animo e di professione, è in grado di accompagnare chiunque in una delle sue tante avventure, in totale sicurezza. Uno dei pochi skipper al mondo ad aver raggiunto tutte le mete polari più importanti, l'Antartide, la Groenlandia e l'Alaska. Grande sportivo è sempre pronto a condividere le sue passioni con i suoi ospiti. Dal windsurf all'alpinismo, dalla pesca d'apnea al parapendio, dal kitesurf al freeride ski, usando sempre come base la barca.

Il posto più bello che ha visto? E' la domanda che gli fanno tutti.

Enrico Tettamanti is a sailor who comes from the mountains, from Pomarolo in Trentino. He has sailed since childhood, has been a professional skipper for 20 years and has sailed more than 190,000 miles around the world. Enrico è sposato con Giulia Azzalli, con la quale condivide ogni momento a bordo. Giulia, bresciana, è anche la moviemaker di bordo ed è sempre pronta ad immortalare le scene più belle e suggestive. Con loro il primo figlio, un anno e già 5.000 miglia alle spalle, si chiama Kay che in hawaiano significa Oceano.

Con loro in questa avventura (e in numerose altre) un amico con la sua famiglia, moglie e quattro figli, dagli 8 ai 15 anni. L'amico, uomo di finanza di stanza alla City di Londra, è anche socio finanziatore del progetto.

Massimo De Luca, per tutti Mafio, era abbastanza scontato che diventasse un velista professionista, vista la scelta dei due fratelli piu' grandi. Famiglia di velisti e velai, infatti oltre che a regatare con tutte le classi e gli yachts più famosi nel Mediterraneo, hanno anche costruito uno dei marchi più importanti al mondo per le vele, One Sail.

Dal 2010 Mafio gestisce Ourdream, un 80 piedi da regata, comprata da un gruppo di amici tra cui appunto Mafio e Dede. Con Ourdream partecipa a tutte le più importanti regate e manifestazioni Mediterranee, mettendo la barca a disposizione di ospiti che vogliono provare l'ebrezza di navigare tra le boe, con i top velisti al mondo.

Mafio ed Enrico sono carissimi amici e sull'amicizia si basa anche il loro rapporto a bordo. Mafio sale al comando nei periodi in cui Enrico scende a terra per qualche mese all'anno, portando Kamana da un continente all'altro, per essere sempre in grado di seguire la rotta prefissata.

Per questa occasione, hanno deciso di navigare insieme, sia per sicurezza, ma in primis per condividere insieme una delle rotte più affascinanti al Mondo.

Marcello Corsi, amico del Kamana, gira il mondo in solitaria con il suo Solaris 48 da 20 anni. Dice Enrico Tettamanti: “Ci siamo sentiti qualche giorno prima della mia partenza dall'Italia verso Nome, e mi diceva che avrebbe fermato la sua Nausicaa in un porto Uruguaiano, per farsi un giro a terra. Gli abbiamo proposto, un po' all'ultimo momento, di imbarcarsi al volo da Cambridge Bay. Ovviamente non ha rifiutato l'offerta”.

Enrico is married to Giulia Azzalli who shares every moment on board with him. Giulia, from Brescia, is also the boat's filmmaker and is always ready to capture the most beautiful and evocative scenes. With them their first son: one year old and with 5,000 miles already under his belt. His name is Kay, meaning “ocean” in Hawaiian.

Accompanying them on this adventure (and many others) is a family friend, with his wife and four children, aged from 8 to 15. Enrico's friend, who works in finance in the City of London, is also the project's financing partner.

Then there is Massimo De Luca, known to all as Mafio. It was pretty obvious he would become a professional sailor, following in his two older brothers' footsteps. A family of sailors and sail-makers, as well as taking part in all the most famous class and yachts races in the Mediterranean, they also established One Sail, one of the most important brands in the sailing world.

Since 2010 Mafio has been the manager of Ourdream, an 80-foot racing yacht bought by a group of friends, including Mafio and Dede. With Ourdream Mafio participates in all the most important Mediterranean regattas and events, making the boat available to guests who want to experience the thrill of sailing between buoys with the world's top sailors.

Mafio and Enrico are close friends and their relationship on board is also based on this friendship. Mafio takes the lead during the periods when Enrico goes on shore for a few months a year, leading Kamana from one continent to another, so as to always pursue the set course.

This time they decided to sail together not only for safety reasons but, above all, to share one of the most amazing routes in the world.

Sono nato in un paesino del Trentino, un piccolo paesino che e' facile immaginare come il luogo piu' distante da quello che e' l'oceano e il mondo della barca a vela utilizzata come mezzo per navigare ed esplorare il mondo.

Eppure a 18 anni avevo già maturato dentro me una passione sconfinata per la vela, gli oceani, il vento, e soprattutto per le grandi esplorazioni del passato che hanno permesso di conoscere il mondo e scrivere alcune delle pagine di storia piu' affascinanti ed epiche degli ultimi secoli.

Leggendo e studiando ogni tipo di libro, manuale o articolo riferito alla vela e' cresciuta dentro me la curiosità e la voglia di partire e seguire le rotte dei piu' grandi esploratori di sempre.

Ma in realtà il tassello essenziale, l'uomo che mi ha ispirato e che mi ha spinto a salpare l'ancora ancora molto giovane, non e' stato Shackleton, Amundsen o Tabarly…e' stato semplicemente mio padre.

Grazie alla sua passione per la vela e ai suoi racconti, grazie al suo carattere forte e alla fiducia che ha sempre riposto nei suoi figli, ho imparato a gestire una barca sin da molto piccolo.

Durante le nostre vacanze estive, e ogni week end in cui ci fosse la possibilità, tutta la nostra famiglia si trasferiva sulla nostra barca al mare… e il capitano ero io!

Avevo meno di 10 anni quando ho iniziato a tracciare le mie prime rotte, ormeggiare la barca in porto o scegliere in base ai venti la baia migliore in cui ancorare.

Ora che anche io sono padre ho capito che tutte le volte che lo vedevo avvicinarsi al timone con una scusa qualsiasi, veniva per assicurarsi che non facessi errori che avrebbero potuto mettere in difficolta' un'altra imbarcazione o noi stessi. Ma non mi sono mai sentito controllato, il suo modo di fare mi ha sempre stimolato a provare e sbagliare, senza paura.

A 19 anni, epoca in cui ero insegnante di patenti nautiche senza limiti dalla costa, ho fatto la mia prima esperienza atlantica.

Ricordo ancora oggi lo stupore che provai nell'osservare quel grande popolo di viaggiatori e velisti riuniti alle Canarie, tutti in trepidante attesa di salpare e attraversare l'intero Oceano Atlantico.

Da quel momento in poi le barche e la vela sono divenute il mio mondo, e si sono appropriate della mia vita in maniera totalizzante.

A 21 anni ho iniziato a vivere stabilmente in barca, ed oggi, dopo oltre 23 anni, e' su una barca che ho deciso di continuare a vivere assieme alla mia famiglia.

Nel corso degli anni questa passione si e' tramutata in una sorta di dipendenza. Il vento e la sua forza, la capacita' di potersi muovere grazie alla sola energia di questo elemento naturale, sono aspetti della navigazione che tutt'ora mi strabiliano e mi emozionano.

Certo all'inizio della mia carriera di velista non avevo ancora chiara quale sarebbe stata la rotta che avrei scelto di seguire, la tecnologia a disposizione non era quella moderna, che in un click ci permette di leggere e confrontarsi con le esperienze altrui, e quindi ho dovuto affidarmi al solo istinto.

Mi affascinavano le regate oceaniche, le navigazioni in solitaria e quelle alle alte latitudini, ma ero attratto anche dall'esplorazione degli atolli tropicali e delle isole dei mari del sud Pacifico.

Col tempo ho capito chiaramente che la mia vocazione erano i grandi viaggi. Volevo riuscire ad usare la vela per raggiungere i luoghi piu' isolati e di difficile accesso.

I was born in a village in Trentino, a small village which is as far as one can imagine from the ocean and the world of sailing boats, which are used to navigate and explore the world.

Yet, at 18, I had already developed a boundless passion for sailing, oceans, the wind and, above all, the great explorations of the past, which allowed us to discover the world and write some of the most fascinating and heroic chapters in the history of the last few centuries.

My curiosity steadily grew as I read and studied all types of books, manuals and articles on sailing, together with the desire to set off and follow the routes taken by all the greatest explorers.

Actually, the essential element, the man who inspired and encouraged me to sail in my youth, was not Shackleton, Amundsen or Tabarly… but, simply, my own father.

Thanks to his passion for sailing and his stories and thanks also to his strong character and the trust he always placed in his children, I learnt how to be in charge of a boat from a very young age.

During our summer holidays, and on any available weekend, all the family would go on board our boat out at sea… and I was the captain!

I wasn't even 10 when I started to map my first routes, moor the boat in a harbour or choose the best bay in which to drop the anchor, depending on the wind.

Now that I'm also a father, I appreciate how all the times I saw my father coming towards the wheel with any old excuse, he was doing it to make sure I wasn't making any mistakes that would put us or another boat in danger. But I never felt controlled; his way of being has always encouraged me to try and not be afraid of making mistakes.

At 19, it was when I was teaching students who were studying for their marine licence without distance limits from the coast that I had my first experience in the Atlantic.

I still remember how I amazed I was seeing the great travellers and sailors gathered in the Canaries, all eagerly waiting to set sail and cross the entire Atlantic Ocean.

From that moment on, boats and sailing became my whole world, completely taking over my life.

At 21 I started to live permanently onboard and today, a er more than 23 years, I've made the decision to continue living on a boat together with my family.

Over the years, this passion has become a kind of dependency. The wind and its strength - the ability to move thanks only to the force of this natural element are aspects of sailing that never cease to amaze and excite me.

Of course, at the start of my sailing career, the exact route I would take wasn't clear to me. There was no modern technology available, meaning that I couldn't read or learn about others' experiences with just a click. And so I've had to rely exclusively on my instinct.

I was fascinated by ocean races, single-handed and high latitude sailing, but I was also attracted by the exploration of tropical atolls and the islands in the South Pacific.

Eventually, I clearly understood that my vocation was to be found in great journeys. I wanted to sail in order to reach the most isolated and inaccessible

l'alta montagna, a cui mi sono avvicinato da ragazzo e che ho cercato di continuare a coltivare durante le mie tappe sulla terraferma. Oceano e montagna sono stati due speciali maestri di vita, i loro insegnamenti mi hanno permesso di portare a termine innumerevoli avventure.

Il mare in particolare mi ha dato tanto, e continua instancabilmente a farlo. Mi ha insegnato che nella vita il sacrificio, l'impegno e la dedizione sono direttamente proporzionali al ritorno personale che poi si avra' dalle proprie azioni.

Bellissimi successi, cosi' come grandi sconfitte, fanno parte di un unico bagaglio di esperienze che rimarra' per sempre indelebile nelle nostre vite. Ma sarà difficile averne, impegnandosi solo il minimo necessario e senza mettersi in gioco.

E' con questa convinzione che sono riuscito ad attraversare gli oceani in lungo e in largo, coccolato dai caldi e sicuri venti alisei, per poi decidere di spingermi alle alte latitudini, con le sue incessanti tempeste.

Quante volte da ragazzino capitava di prendere un temporale nelle uscite in barca ed io mi ritrovavo a sognare ad occhi aperti il momento in cui avrei doppiato Capo Horn…e poi con tanto impegno e sacrificio quel momento e' arrivato e sono riuscito ad esaudire il mio sogno di ragazzo.

Dopo capo Horn ho deciso di circumnavigare completamente la Terra del Fuoco, andare oltre e raggiungere le isole piu' remote dell'oceano Pacifico e dell'oceano Indiano, poi di nuovo Antartide, Alaska… e un nuovo ambizioso desiderio: riuscire a completare il passaggio a Nord Ovest.

Vivere in barca a lungo mi ha insegnato molto. Col tempo ho imparato l'importanza di saper governare tutti quegli aspetti che nei rari momenti di “vita a terra” mi sento di poter dare per scontati.

Riuscire a gestire le proprie risorse quali acqua, corrente, cibo, (lucidità mentale in certe occasioni!) e la manutenzione del proprio mezzo in perfette condizioni, sono requisiti chiave di tutte le mie navigazioni. Senza dubbio durante il passaggio a Nord Ovest, essendo uno dei posti piu' inaccessibili e imprevedibili al mondo, questi aspetti si sono rivelati fondamentali per la riuscita stessa dell'impresa.

Ricordo perfettamente il giorno in cui e' nata in me l'idea di tentare il passaggio.

Eravamo ancorati a Rangiroa, un magico atollo delle isole Tuamotu, nella Polinesia Francese.

Il 7 agosto del 2015 era il giorno del mio quarantesimo compleanno e avevo la fortuna di festeggiarlo in uno dei posti piu' belli al mondo assieme a Giulia e alla nostra famiglia di sale: Anna, Davide e i loro quattro meravigliosi bimbi, che ci hanno seguiti e raggiunti innumerevoli volte.

Quella notte ho iniziato a pensare a quale potesse essere il miglior modo per concludere in maniera gloriosa il mio secondo giro del mondo, e, perché no, anche a come rendere omaggio al compimento di 20 anni passati in mare.

Avevo l'immagine geografica del mondo impressa molto nitidamente nella mente e, avendoci navigato in lungo e in largo per due decenni, pensavo che non avesse piu' segreti.

Eppure non riuscivo a visualizzare quale fosse la rotta che avrei dovuto scegliere per chiudere il cerchio, per unire i due capi di quel filo invisibile che avevamo ricamato navigando sulla superficie del pianeta.

Poi e' arrivata, proprio come una folata di vento in una giornata di bonaccia… era sempre stata davanti ai miei occhi: la soluzione piu' semplice, eppure la piu' difficile.

My attitude to sailing has undoubtedly been influenced by my passion for mountaineering, which I approached in my youth and tried to develop when I was taking a break on land. Oceans and mountains have represented my two special life coaches, their teachings having enabled me to complete many adventures.

The sea, especially, has given me so much and continues to do so unremittingly.

It has taught me that, in life, the personal benefit to be gained from our actions is directly proportional to our sacrifice, commitment and dedication.

Amazing results, as well as great failures, make up a unique baggage of experience that will never be erased from our lives. These would not be achieved by only making the minimum amount of effort and never taking risks.

It is with this certainty that I have managed to cross oceans far and wide, protected by safe warm trade winds, deciding to venture towards higher latitudes with their continuous storms.

How many times, as a young boy, would I run into a storm when going out on the boat and daydream about the moment I would double Cape Horn… and, then, with much commitment and sacrifice, that moment finally arrived and I succeeded in making this boyhood dream come true.

A er Cape Horn I decided to circumnavigate Tierra del Fuego and sail further, reaching the remotest islands of the Pacific and Indian Ocean, then again the Antarctic and Alaska… and an ambitious new dream: completing the Northwest Passage.

Living on a boat for so long has taught me a lot. With time, I have learnt how to manage all those aspects that I used to take for granted during those rare moments of “life on dry land”.

Managing resources - such as water, electricity and food (sometimes a clear head, too!), and maintaining the boat in perfect condition - is the main prerequisite for all my sailing. Undoubtedly, during the Northwest Passage, which is one of the most inaccessible and unpredictable places on earth, these aspects played a fundamental role in the success of this endeavour.

I clearly remember the day I came up with the idea of attempting the passage.

We were moored in Rangiroa, a magical atoll, part of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia.

On 7 August 2015, the day of my 40th birthday, I was lucky enough to be celebrating it in one of the most beautiful places on earth, together with Giulia and our “sea family”: Anna, Davide and their four amazing children, who have joined us many times on our trips.

That night I started to consider the best way to complete my second trip around the world in the most spectacular way and, why not, celebrate 20 years at sea.

My mind contained a distinct impression of the world's geography and, a er two decades of sailing all over the world, I thought it no longer held any secrets.

However, I could not visualise what the best route would be to close the circle, joining the extremities of this invisible thread I had sown by sailing the surface of the planet.

Then it struck me, just like a gust of wind on a calm day… the answer was right in front of me: the simplest but, at the same time, the most difficult solution.

This is how the route emerged, a route that led us through places that, undoubt-

E' cosi' che e' nata la rotta che ci ha poi condotti nei posti che senza dubbio ci sono entrati piu' profondamente nel cuore: l'arcipelago di Raja Ampat in Indonesia, l'atollo di Budi Budi in Papua Nuova Guinea e le regioni che si affacciano sul Mar Glaciale Artico.

Da quel giorno ancorati nelle acque cristalline della Polinesia, al momento in cui ci siamo ritrovati a Nome (Alaska) in attesa della condizioni di ghiaccio favorevoli per iniziare la sfida del nostro passaggio, sono successe tante cose…

Le miglia di navigazione per riuscire a portare a termine il progetto erano aumentate in maniera esponenziale, e cosi' la nostra possibilità di non smettere di imparare dal nostro maestro Mare.

Una situazione meteoreologica particolarmente difficile che ci eravamo trovati ad affrontare, ci rese ancor piu' sicuri della straordinaria affidabilita' del mezzo su cui navigavamo.

L'intimo e meraviglioso contatto che eravamo riusciti ad instaurare con le popolazioni dell'isola di Budi Budi, posto irraggiungibile se non in barca, e' stata la conferma che il nostro desiderio di esplorare e conoscere era ancora, dopo molti anni, inesauribile.

Da ultimo, e non di certo per importanza, abbiamo avuto l'immensa fortuna che un nuovo membro decidesse di far parte dell'equipaggio Kamana: il nostro primogenito Kai. Il progetto Kamana Sailing Expedition, negli anni, ha visto avventurarsi a bordo tantissimi bambini e ragazzi, tra i quali i compagni delle piu' belle avventure: Sofia, Tommaso, Anita e Filippo.

Nulla sarebbe stato cosi' emozionante e ricco di significato senza la loro presenza a bordo. Si sa', gli occhi di un bambino vedono tutto ciò che noi adulti non siamo piu' capaci di vedere…e con un po' di fortuna poi ce lo raccontano.

Con la nascita di Kai e successivamente di Aua, e' nata in noi la voglia di trovare un approccio diverso alle nostre avventure, che ci insegnasse a considerare il mare non solo una meraviglia naturale, ma anche uno strumento educativo per i nostri bambini.

Vivere cosi' a stretto contatto con la natura e poter godere della sua bellezza, dovendo pero' sempre e comunque sottostare alle sue leggi, speriamo possa essere un imprinting che rimarrà nel loro curriculum vitae per sempre.

Io e Giulia cerchiamo quotidianamente di spiegare loro quanto le risorse in barca siano limitate e preziose, e quanto la natura anche in questo ci dia una mano attraverso il vento, il sole e le acque del mare.

Il vento ci permette di spostarci, il sole ci ricarica di energia, il mare ci offre il suo cibo.

Raccontiamo loro che l'Oceano e' un animale selvaggio in via di estinzione, ma che nel nostro piccolo possiamo fare molto per salvarlo, che alle volte bisogna affrontare qualche piccola paura per arrivare all'ancoraggio piu' protetto; che il mondo non parla sempre la stessa lingua e non e' sempre dello stesso colore, ma che a nascondino sanno giocarci tutti.

Navighiamo cercando di fare del nostro meglio per prenderci cura, ed insegnare ai nostri bambini a prendersi cura, di ciò che di piu' importante e meraviglioso abbiamo: il Pianeta Terra.

From the day we anchored in the crystal-clear waters of Polynesia to the moment we found ourselves in Nome (Alaska), waiting for favourable ice conditions in order to start the challenging passage, many things happened…

The miles of sailing required to complete the project had increased exponentially, together with the opportunity to continuously learn from our master, the Sea. A particularly difficult meteorological situation we had to face further convinced us of the exceptional reliability of the boat we were sailing on.

The wonderful close contact we established with the population of Budi Budi Island, a place that can only be reached by water, confirmed that our desire to explore and learn was, a er all these years, inexhaustible.

Last, but not least in terms of importance, we were incredibly fortunate to have a new member joining the Kamana crew: our first child Kai. The Kamana Sailing Expedition project, over the years, has seen many children and young people venturing on board. Among the companions on our most beautiful trips: Sofia, Tommaso, Anita and Filippo.

Without their presence on board nothing would have been as exciting or meaningful. Everyone knows that a child sees all the things that we adults no longer notice… and with a bit of luck they will eventually tell us.

Following Kai's birth, and a er the birth of Aua, I wanted to find a different approach to our adventures, one that would teach us to consider the sea not only as a natural wonder, but also as an educational tool for our children.

We hope that living in such close contact with nature and enjoying it in all its beauty, while always abiding by its laws, will represent a foundation that will remain in their lives forever.

Each day, Giulia and I try to explain to our children how limited and valuable the resources on board are, and how much nature helps us even in this respect, with its winds, sun and sea water.

The wind enables us to move while the sun recharges our energy resources and the sea offers us food.

We tell them that the Ocean is like an endangered wild animal, but there's also a lot we can do to save it and sometimes have to overcome some small fear to reach the most protected harbour; that the world doesn't always speak the same language and isn't always the same colour, but everybody knows how to play hide and seek.

We set sail, doing our best to look a er - while teaching our children to look a er it too - the most important and wonderful thing we have: Planet Earth.

Sono lassù a 64° Nord di latitudine, in Alaska. “Nome – racconta Enrico – è una città fantasma, che vive ancora oggi grazie ai cercatori d'oro. Con delle chiatte improbabili si avventurano in mare per setacciare a poche miglia dalla spiaggia.

“There is not place like Nome”, è il motto dei “particolari” abitanti di questa città”.

Sono pronti a partire, aspettano la finestra meteo giusta che, facendo tutti gli scongiuri possibili, affidandosi a tutti gli dei ed alle dee del mare dei venti, pare possa arrivare.

Sono pronti a navigare per 3.500 miglia, obiettivo Nuuk. In altre parole per compiere il Passaggio a Nord Ovest, e a farlo da Ovest ad Est. Sarebbe il primo equipaggio a riuscirci ma, a dir la verità, non è questo l'importante. E' il viaggio che conta. Un viaggio che seguirà quella che viene definita la Route 6, la più sicura delle sette rotte possibili. E' interessante, e molto inquietante notare che una volta ce n'era una sola, molto a Nord. Poi lo scioglimento dei ghiacci polari ha aperto nuove vie.

Da Nome Kamana Expedition attraverserà lo stretto di Bering tra capo Dežnëv, il punto più a est del continente asiatico, e capo Principe di Galles, il punto più a ovest del continente americano, e poi metterà la prua a Est, attraversando il mare Beaufort, a nord dell'Alaska.

Poi entrerà in territorio artico canadese e in particolare farà tappa a Cambridge Bay su Victoria Island, dove a Enrico, Mafio e Marcello si unirà il resto dell'equipaggio. Poi rotta ancora a Est verso Gjoa Haven su King William Island e dopo di nuovo Nord per passare nel Canale di Fort Ross (tra Gibson Island e Somerset Island) per poi passare a Nord dell'Isola di Baffin e entrare nella baia omonima. Quindi si arriva nello Stretto di Davis, di fronte alla Groenlandia, in Atlantico, e poi infine Nuuk, la capitale della Groenlandia.

Per ora le notizie che ci arrivano dal Plum, non sono tantissime. Fervono gli ultimi preparativi, tra cui l'installazione del secondo radar di bordo. “Il clima con gli altri navigatori è stupendo, oggi sono arrivate le ultime due barche e ora siamo in 10 ad aspettare le giuste condizioni per partire. Con alcuni di loro ci eravamo incontrati vari anni fa nell'estremo sud del Mondo. Insomma gira e rigira, tra i Poli ci sono sempre gli stessi...”

NUUK They're up there at 64° north latitude in Alaska. "Nome - says Enrico - is a ghost town, still alive today thanks to gold divers. They venture out to sea in unlikely barges to mine a few miles from the beach. "There is no place like Nome", is the motto of this town's "unique" inhabitants".

They're ready to leave, waiting for the right weather window which, touch wood, and relying on all the sea and wind gods and goddesses, seems to be approaching.

They're ready to sail 3,500 miles, destination Nuuk. In other words, to traverse the Northwest Passage and to sail from west to east.

They'd be the first crew to pull this off, but to be honest, that's not important. It's the journey that counts. A journey that follows what is known as Route 6, the safest of the seven possible routes. It's interesting and very worrying to note that there was once only one, much further north. Then the melting polar ice opened up new avenues.

From Nome Kamana Expedition will cross the Bering Strait between Cape Dezhnev, the easternmost point of the Asian continent, and Cape Prince of Wales, the westernmost point of the American continent. They will then point the bow east, crossing the Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska.

They will then enter Canadian Arctic territory and stop in Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island, where Enrico, Camilla and Massimo will be joined by the rest of the crew. Then they will travel east again towards Gjoa Haven on King William Island and north again, passing through the Fort Ross Channel (between Gibson Island and Somerset Island). Finally, north of Baffin Island they will enter into the bay of the same name, later arriving at the Davis Strait, facing Greenland, in the Atlantic, and Nuuk, the Greenland's capital.

So far, we are not getting much news from Plum. Final preparations are underway, including the installation of a second on-board radar. “There is such an amazing atmosphere with the other sailors. Today the last two boats arrived and now there are 10 of us waiting for the right weather conditions to set off. We met some of them several years ago in the far south of the world. I mean, when all is said and done, there are always the same people between the Poles..."

TO WAIT...

C'è improvvisamente folla a Nome… come ci racconta Enrico: “In questo momento siamo in quattro barche ad aspettare le condizioni giuste per passare Point Barrow, che resta ancora bloccato con 5/10 di copertura ghiaccio. 3/10 è la massima copertura di ghiaccio possibile per garantire la navigazione senza problemi. 6 barche delle 10 che erano a Nome, hanno deciso di salpare ugualmente.

Il primo e' stato il catamarano di 6,20 metri non abitabile di Yvan Bourgnon, la sua scelta è stata fatta viste le previsioni meteo. Navigando solo a vela e meglio con venti leggeri, ha deciso di prendere la finestra giusta per portarsi nei pressi di Point Barrow ed aspettare le condizioni giuste per passare il primo blocco di ghiacci.

Sabato invece sono partite altre 5 barche, che hanno fatto un analisi dando molta importanza ai venti e poca ai ghiacci.

Una barca austriaca di vecchi amici conosciuti in Patagonia (coppia più due bimbi di 11 e 8 anni) visto il loro basso pescaggio di solo 1 metro grazie alla deriva mobile, sono in grado risalire alcuni fiumi molto affascinanti tra qui e Point Barrow.

Aspetteranno lì le condizioni giuste per compiere il passaggio che per loro sarà il secondo.

Le altre barche sono: una tedesca con Susanne a bordo, solitaria di 56 anni con una barca di 40 piedi di alluminio, un'altra di tedeschi che organizzano spedizioni, una di neozelandesi e una norvegese, con a bordo 4 amici.

Tutte queste sono sotto i 42 piedi con poca autonomia a motore, per questo forse si sono fatti affascinare da un bel flusso di venti settentrionali, sufficienti per coprire le 660 miglia tar Nome e Point Barrow a vela. Sia a noi che agli esperti artici è' sembrata però una scelta un po' troppo azzardata, in quanto è assolutamente troppo presto per presentarsi al cospetto di Point Barrow e tentare di passare attraverso il primo grosso blocco di ghiaccio”.

Per misurare la presenza del ghiaccio si usano due indicatori principali: la copertura (in percentuale) e lo spessore(in centimetri). Ci sono dei siti

specializzati per avere le “Ice Charts”. Su Kamana Expedition, grazie a sistemi satellitari all'avanguardia, si possono fare analisi meteo approfondite ma, per avere un ulteriore confronto e un supporto da dei professionisti utilizzano il servizio di Commander's Weather. Da anni Enrico, per le traversate importanti, utilizza i loro preziosi servizi.

Il rilevamento avviene grazie ai satelliti. Serve che ci sia una copertura massima del 30%, e uno spessore massimo di 15 cm.

Il vero pericolo è restare bloccati, soprattutto per uno scafo in vetroresina come quello di Kamana Expedition. Ecco che bisogna calcolare con precisione se, una volta iniziata la traversata, continuare nel tentativo di passaggio o se tornare indietro e quindi individuare il punto di “non ritorno”. Esistono porti dove “svernare”, ma per gli scafi in vtr è sostanzialmente inaffrontabile.

Chi compie la rotta da W a E, come Kamana, deve essere particolarmente conservativo. Il ghiacci si aprono prima a Ovest, poi a Est. Il che significa che il passaggio può iniziare prima, ma anche che anche la via del ritorno si chiude prima.

“In questi giorni – racconta Enrico – mi sto consultando con Victor Wejer. Vive a Toronto e gratuitamente segue tutti i velisti pronti a fare il passaggio Nordovest o navigare nelle acque Artiche. Coautore del nuovo e prezioso libro RCC Arctic and Northern Water. È un grandissimo personaggio”. Nel 2016 Victor ha ricevuto l'Award of Merit dall' Ocean Cruising Club (GBR) per il suo appoggio ai “navigatori polari”. Alla cerimonia erano 46 di loro ad applaudirlo (cioè quasi tutti). Non vuole un Euro per il suo servizio, ha 76 anni e da 60 naviga. La sua musa ispiratrice è un altro personaggio molto noto ai navigatori oceanici, Herb Hilgenberg che ha assistito per 25 anni i navigatori atlantici e ha ricevuto la US Coast Guard top Award. Passa le sue giornate, e le sue notti, nel suo ufficio pieno di carte nautiche, libri e computer.

O NON ATTENDERE OR NOT TO WAIT There's suddenly a crowd in Nome... as Enrico tells us: “Right now there are four boats waiting for the right conditions to pass Point Barrow, which is still blocked with 5/10 ice cover. 3/10 is the maximum possible ice cover to ensure trouble-free navigation. 6 of the 10 boats that were stationed in Nome decided to sail anyway.

Yvan Bourgnon was the first to leave with his 6.2m single-handed catamaran, a decision based on the weather forecast. Sailing exclusively and travelling better with light winds, Bourgnon decided to take advantage of the right weather window to get close to Point Barrow and then wait for the right conditions to pass the first ice block. On Saturday, 5 other boats left, basing their decision on an analysis privileging wind conditions over ice.

An Austrian boat belonging to some old friends we met in Patagonia (a couple with two children aged 11 and 8), because of its shallow 1m draught and thanks to the centreboard are able to travel up some very interesting rivers between here and Point Barrow. They will wait here for the right conditions to attempt the passage, their second crossing.

The other boats are: a German boat with Susanne on board, a lone 56 year old with a 40-foot aluminium boat; another boat with Germans who organise expeditions; one with New Zealanders and a Norwegian boat with 4 friends on board.

All of these are under 42 feet with little motor range, which is why they may have been tempted by favourable north winds, strong enough to sail the 660 miles separating Nome and Point Barrow. In our opinion, however, and that of the Arctic experts, this choice to sail appeared a bit risky, as it is too early to show up at Point Barrow and then attempt to go through the first big ice block".

Two main indicators are used to measure the presence of ice: coverage (in percentage) and thickness (in centimeters). Some sites specialise in providing "Ice Charts". On the Kamana Expedition, thanks to state-of-the-art satellite

systems, they are able carry out detailed weather analyses but, for additional information and support from professionals, they use Commander's Weather.

For years Enrico Tettamanti has been using this valuable service for important crossings.

The readings are carried out with the help of satellites. A maximum coverage of 30%, and a maximum thickness of 15 cm is needed.

The real danger is getting stuck, especially for fibreglass hulls like that of the Kamana Expedition. Therefore it is essential, once the crossing has started, to make a precise calculation as to whether the attempt should be continued or whether to go back and identify the point of "no return". There are ports where it is possible to "winter", but this is not an option for fibreglass hulls.

Those who sail from west to east, like Kamana, must be especially conservative in their calculations. The ice opens first to the west and then to the east, which means the passage can be attempted earlier but, at the same time, the route back closes earlier, too.

"At the moment," says Enrico, "I'm consulting with Victor Wejer. He lives in Toronto and follows all sailors who are getting ready to attempt the Northwest Passage or sail in Arctic waters. He does this for free. He's the co-author of a valuable new book, RCC Arctic and Northern Water. He's a great character." In 2016 Victor received the Award of Merit from the Ocean Cruising Club (GBR) for the support he has given "polar sailors". At the ceremony there were 46 of these sailors applauding him (i.e. almost all of them). He doesn't want any money for his services. He's 76 years old and has been sailing for 60 years. He is inspired by another very well-known figure to ocean navigators Herb Hilgenberg, who has spent 25 years assisting Atlantic navigators, receiving the US Coast Guard top award. He spends all his days and nights in his office which is full of charts, books and computers.

Primo fra tutti fu il norvegese Roald Amundsen che impiegò tre anni, dal 1903 al 1906, sul GjØaun peschereccio per la pesca delle aringhe convertito alla nobile impresa (che partì appena in tempo prima di essere bloccato dai creditori che volevano indietro i loro soldi).

I primi a riuscirci in un solo anno furono i canadesi della Reale Polizia a cavallo, solo nel 1944, con lo schooner St. Roch.

Il primo diportista? Willy de Roos, nel giugno 1977, con il suo 13 metri Williwaw, battente bandiera belga. De Roos non solo fece il passaggio, ma continuò “dritto” fino al suo ritorno in Belgio passando da Capo Horn, fu quindi il primo non professionista anche a circumnavigare tutte le Americhe.

The first to cross the Northwest Passage was the Norwegian Roald Amundsen who took three years, from 1903 to 1906, on the GjØa, a herring fishing vessel converted for this important enterprise (which left just in time, before being blocked by creditors who wanted their money back).

The Canadians of the Royal Mounted Police were the first to cross the Northwest Passage in a single year, in 1944, with the schooner St. Roch.

The first yachtsman? Willy de Roos, in June 1977, with his 13m Williwaw, flying the Belgian flag. De Roos not only completed the passage, but continued "straight on”, returning to Belgium via Cape Horn. He was also the first non-professional sailor to circumnavigate all the Americas.

“Nome è veramente un posto che non assomiglia a nessun altro. Affacciato sulle gelide ed inospitali acqua del Mar di Bering, e' un posto senza dubbio ricco di fascino.

Strade di terra battuta, draghe abbandonate ad ogni angolo e sull'angolo opposto un vecchio saloon. Ovunque si vedono scritte o cartelloni con foto di cani da slitta. Infatti qui, ogni anno, arriva la corsa di cani da slitta più famosa al Mondo, l'Iditarod. Ci sono più saloon a Nome che in tutto il resto del Bush (con questo termine gli americani indicano i territorio non raggiunto dalle strade principali).

Ai tempi della corsa all'oro contava una popolazione di oltre 20.000 cercatori d'oro, oggi conta poco più di 3500 abitanti. I più ancora coinvolti nella ricerca d' oro. Le draghe però si sono spostate dai fiumi al mare. Il porto infatti è l'unico in Alaska, dove al posto di pescherecci che rientrano dal mare stracolmi di pesce, è trafficato da piccole e medie draghe abbarbicate in qualche rude maniera sulle delle piatte improbabili, che rientrano in porto per scaricare polvere d'oro. Durante la stagione estiva, tutti i nuovi cercatori, escono a poche miglia dal porto e dragano il fondo marino alla ricerca della ricca polvere.

Il processo è abbastanza rudimentale, con dei setacci che separano i detriti dalle piccole pepite, ma soprattutto dalla polvere che si deposta sotto 50/60 cm dal fondo marino”.

"Nome really is a place unlike any other. Overlooking the inhospitable icy waters of the Bering Sea, it's undoubtedly a place full of charm.

Unpaved roads, abandoned dredgers at every turn and, on the opposite corner, an old saloon. Everywhere you see writing or billboards with pictures of sled dogs. Every year, in this town, the most famous dog sled race in the world, the Iditarod, takes place. There are more saloons in Nome than in the rest of the Bush (this is the term used by Americans to describe all areas not reached by main roads).

During the gold rush there was a population of over 20,000 gold diggers, but today Nome has just over 3,500 inhabitants. The majority are still involved in the search for gold. The dredgers, however, have moved from the rivers to the sea. In fact, the port is the only one in Alaska where, instead of fishing boats coming back from the sea full of fish, small and medium-sized dredgers can be seen clinging roughly to the improbable flatbeds, which come back to the port to unload their gold dust. During the summer season, all the new divers go out a few miles from the port and dredge the seabed in search of this rich dust.

The process is quite rudimentary, with sieves separating the debris from the small nuggets and from the dust that settles below 50-60 cm of the seabed".

“A Nome d'estate il sole tramonta poco sotto l'orizzonte e solo per un paio d'ore e dove in ogni caso non appare mai la notte. Tutta questa luce, sfasa il bioritmo di qualsiasi persona. Cosi ti ritrovi a passeggiare alle 4 di mattina, convinto che sia mezzogiorno…”

Non poteva esistere un posto migliore dove aspettare le condizioni meteo giuste per salpare…

“Qui hai tutto, ma non hai niente. La linea del telefono c'è ma poi cade e nessuno sa quando verrà ristabilita. Ti puoi far arrivare dei pezzi, ma sapendo che al 50% non arriveranno mai, o in grande ritardo… Al supermercato un giorno trovi frutta e verdura o degli ottimi prodotti, e tre giorni dopo gli scaffali sono vuoti e nessuno sa bene quando verranno riempiti nuovamente. Insomma e' il posto giusto per dei navigatori artici, che anche in porto sicuro ed abitato, iniziano a capire perfettamente che già da qui, più nulla è scontato…”

"In Nome, during the summer, the sun sets just below the horizon for only for a couple of hours and there is no night. All this light interrupts a person's biorhythms. So you find yourself walking around at 4 in the morning, thinking it's noon..."

There couldn't be a better place to wait for the right weather to set sail...

“Here you have everything, but you also have nothing. There is a phone line but it gets cut off and nobody knows when it will be restored.

You can order things, knowing full well that half of them will never arrive or will be delivered late... At the supermarket, one day you find fruit and vegetables or other excellent products, but three days later the shelves are empty and nobody seems to know when they'll be stocked again. In short, it's the right place for Arctic sailors who, even in a safe and inhabited port, begin to understand that nothing can be taken for granted..."

“I comandanti di navi o rimorchiatori, abituati a navigare in queste acque, sono sempre delle fonti inesauribili di preziose informazioni. Nessuno di loro rimane indifferente davanti ad una barca a vela ormeggiata tra di loro con in programma di salpare per passare da un Oceano all'altro affrontando il mar Artico.

Tra i navigatori invece c'è un continuo ritrovarsi e scambi di opinioni ed osservazioni sulle condizioni dei ghiacci. I più sono amici già conosciuti in qualche altra destinazione alle alte latitudini. Con chi ci si è mai incontrati, si hanno almeno un paio di amici in comune…Tutti hanno i loro stili e i loro modo di pensare.

“The ship and tug captains, who are accustomed to sailing in these waters, are always an inexhaustible source of valuable information. They are unable to ignore a sailboat moored between them with plans to sail from one ocean to the other, the Arctic Sea facing them.

Sailors continuously exchange opinions and observations on the ice conditions. Most of these are friends already known from some other location in high latitudes. As for those you have never met, you find you have at least a couple of friends in common… They all have their own style and ways of thinking.

lupi solitari lone wolves Ci sono anche due solitari. Uno dei quali è un ragazzo olandese, che avevamo incontrato a Puerto Williams in Cile.

Bart ha gia' fatto il passaggio a Nordovest 4 anni fa, e aveva svernato sopra l'80° parallelo in solitaria: racconta ancora oggi con emozione della sua primavera polare, con l'uscita dal buio perenne e dai -40 gradi che ha dovuto sopportare per 3 mesi... Gli orsi polari che gli sono andati a far visita sono stati 60 e tra questi una mamma con il suo piccolo, avevano preso il pozzetto di Tranquilo, come un comodo solarium per scaldarsi dopo l'inverno, evidentemente anche per loro non deve essere cosi confortevole.

There are also two loners. One of them is a Dutch guy we met in Puerto Williams, Chile.

Bart already completed the Northwest Passage 4 years ago, spending the winter alone above the 80th parallel. He speaks with emotion of his polar spring, emerging from the perennial darkness and the -40 degrees he had to endure for 3 months.

La cosa piu' affascinate di loro è che Jan è un genio matematico ed insegna via e-mail, quando può con Skype, ai suoi alunni all'Università di Bergen.

NOME ALASKA

In Nome have we made some last the latest improvements to the boat. We installed a new back-up radar, updated all the software, prepared the equipment to be used during navigation and studied the ice charts daily.

In addition to the work on board, we went on wonderful trips inland, where herds of muskoxen dominate the endless hills of the tundra.

We also took the opportunity to familiarise ourselves with rifles by shooting on the riverbanks. Here you must have a rifle with enough shooting power to handle a bear and, of course, it's essential that the whole crew knows how to use one. Fortunately, the chances of coming across an aggressive bear are always rather slim. Unfortunately, however, in recent years, polar bears have found less and less food to hunt, as there is no more ice to go out to sea to feed on seals. So they have become more aggressive towards the few human beings they meet and recognise as tasty food!

Obviously, we haven't missed the opportunity to interact as much as possible with the locals. Going to the saloons, where gold divers and fishermen gather at the end of the day, or simply inviting all the various people who come to see the boat onboard, fascinated as they are by those who come here, to the end of the world, simply for the sake of it.

Noi a Nome abbiamo fatto le ultime migliorie alla barca.

Installato il nuovo radar di back up, aggiornato tutto il software, preparato l'attrezzatura che useremo in navigazione, e studiato le carte dei ghiacci quotidianamente.

Oltre ai lavori di bordo, siamo andati a fare dei giri stupendi nell'entroterra, dove mandrie di buoi muschiati regnano sulle sterminate colline della tundra.

Abbiamo anche approfittato per prendere più confidenza con il fucile, facendo tiro a segno sugli argini dei fiumi. Qui è d'obbligo avere a bordo un fucile sufficientemente potente per poter affrontare un orso ed ovviamente è indispensabile che tutto l'equipaggio lo sappia usare.

Fortunatamente l'incontro con un orso aggressivo rimane sempre remoto. Ma purtroppo, negli ultimi anni, gli orsi polari trovano sempre meno cibo da cacciare, visto che non ci sono più i ghiacci per poter andare in mare e sfamarsi di foche. Cosi sono diventati più aggressivi nei confronti dei pochi esseri umani che incontrano e che riconoscono come ottimo cibo!

Ovviamente non abbiamo perso l'occasione di relazionarci il più possibile con gli abitanti locali. Andando nei saloon, dove a fine giornata, si radunano i cercatori d'oro e pescatori. O semplicemente invitando a bordo le svariate persone che vengono a vedere la barca affascinati da chi arriva qui, alla fine del mondo, semplicemente per il gusto di farlo.

21 luglio Siamo salpati da Nome oggi con l'alta marea anche se il vento non era ancora girato, ma in bassa toccavamo il fondo (melmoso) e quindi dovevamo assolutamente uscire con l'alta.

Abbiamo fatto 20 miglia contro vento e un bel mare e ci siamo ridossati all'ancora sotto una bellissima isola inospitale… Sledge Island.

Il vento contro era previsto ma oggi a Nome ha fatto un caldo inaspettato, si sono raggiunti quasi 20 gradi, cosi al vento barico si è aggiunta una termica e sta soffiando 25/30 nodi da vest, esattamente contro la nostra rotta. Purtroppo il vento alza un mare corto e cattivo visto i fondali di soli 15 metri, ma soprattutto tra pochissime ore dovrebbe girare a Sud e restare ad andature portanti fino a Point Barrow. Appena girerà, cosa che dovrebbe avvenire all'alba, salperemo. L'importante e' essere fuori dal marina, dove saremmo stati troppo vincolati dal fondale, per poter uscire appena si fossero presentate le condizioni giuste.

Nel frattempo, per quest'anno, non è ancora passato nessuno da Point Barrow, le barche che sono salpate nei giorni precedenti sono ancorate 200 miglia a sud della punta, in attesa di condizioni migliori.

July 21 We sailed from Nome today with high tide, even though the wind hadn't turned yet. However, we were touching the bottom (muddy) during low tide and so we absolutely had to go out on the high tide. We sailed for 20 miles against the wind but with a calm sea and anchored below a beautiful inhospitable island... Sledge Island.

Headwind was forecast but today was unexpectedly warm in Nome. Temperatures reached almost 20 degrees, so a thermal has been added by the baric wind, blowing 25-30 knots from the east, exactly against our course. Unfortunately, the wind has raised a swell, given the 15-meter seabed, but in a few hours the wind should turn south and run until Point Barrow. As soon as it turns, which should be at dawn, we'll set sail. The important thing is to be away from the seashore, where we'd be too bound by the seabed to be able to get out as soon as the right conditions present themselves Meanwhile, this year, no one has passed through Point Barrow yet. The boats that sailed over the past few days are anchored 200 miles south of the point, waiting for better conditions.

22 luglio Questa mattina siamo salpati alle otto da Sledge Island, appena il vento ha girato a nostro favore. Temperatura ottima, mare tranquillo, vento al traverso, facevano pensare a tutto, tranne alla realtà: e cioè quella di navigare nel Mar di Bering con rotta verso Nord…

Dopo 12 ore circa eravamo al cospetto del capo Prince of Wales, il famoso e temuto stretto di Bering. Anche con noi il mare si è fatto riconoscere e la bella brezza di 15 nodi al traverso, è stata sostituita in un attimo da un bel vento di 30 nodi. Eravamo preparati ad un cambio repentino di vento, ma inaspettato è stato il cambio del mare, con onde che frangevano da ogni direzione visto l'aggiunta delle forti correnti.

Fortunatamente tutto questo arrivava da poppa, cosi abbiamo sfilato il Capo a 10/11 nodi e in poche ore abbiamo macinato parecchie miglia nel Chukchi sea.

Fa impressione pensare che stiamo navigando su queste acque che un mese fa, erano una lastra di ghiaccio di 3 metri… A bordo il morale è alto, le previsione del vento sono ottime, mentre quelle del ghiaccio, ricevute dalla nostra guida Artica, non sono buone, visto che i ghiacci vicino a Point Barrow, non si stanno sciogliendo come da previsione.

In questo momento sto scrivendo mentre siamo al 66° parallelo, mancano 10 miglia al passaggio del Circolo Polare Artico. Ora è l'una del mattino, il sole è sopra l'orizzonte e sta accennando un timido tramonto che in pochi minuti diventerà alba…

July 22 This morning we left Sledge Island at 8am, as soon as the wind turned in our favour.

The warm temperatures, calm seas, and wind on our beam, would have you believe anything other than the reality: we were sailing Northwards in the Bering Sea. After more or less 12 hours we were rounding the Cape Prince of Wales, the well known and feared “Bering Strait”.

Despite the idyllic conditions today, even we got a glimpse of the infamous Bering Strait with a 15 knot increase in wind speed and choppy conditions. The quick breeze change was expected but the tidal overfalls and rips created waves breaking in all directions, and we could not have anticipated the effect of this.

Luckily, the following seas brought us round the cape at 10-11 knots and then swiftly up through the Chukchi Sea. It's mind-boggling to think that the waters we are sailing through were a 3m ice sheet only one month ago…

Onboard morale is high. The wind forecast is fantastic, unlike the ice: our local Arctic guide has informed us that the ice around point barrow has not melted or been blown north as predicted by the NOAA diagrams.

Writing from 66deg latitute, 10miles to the arctic circle. Its 1AM local time and the sun is attempting to set for a few a minutes before dawn breaks.

23 luglio Lo stretto di Bering è ormai alle spalle. Mancano 250 miglia a Point Barrow.

I turni di notte sono stati all'insegna di zero visibilità, non dovuta alla mancanza di luce, ma alla fitta nebbia. Il vento è calato, ma così non si può dire del mare, che mai come qui in Artico, lo trovo inspiegabilmente confuso a confronto del vento.

Cosi quando si va a motore, ci si muove come sulle montagne russe…

Nel frattempo ne abbiamo approfittato per studiare le condizioni del ghiaccio dopo Point Barrow, che purtroppo non stanno migliorando.

Victor, forse la persona più esperta di navigazioni artiche, ci confermava che è ancora tutto bloccato e consigliava di ridurre la velocità per non arrivare troppo presto.

Abbiamo fatto il possibile, ma quando il vento e' tornato, doppiando Cape Hope, era impossibile restare sotto i 9 nodi di velocità, visto il vento di 30/35 nodi da sud, che soffiava rabbioso. Ora mancano 240 miglia a Cape Barrow, le previsioni del vento sono ottime, quindi in poco più di 24 ore ci troveremo a cospetto del primo grande blocco di ghiaccio…

The wind has dropped, but so it can not be said of the sea, as ever as in Artic Seas, I find it inexplicably confused in comparison with the wind.

So when you sail driven by the engine, you move like roller coaster ‌ In the meantime, we studied the ice conditions after Point Barrow, which unfortunately are not improving.

Victor, perhaps the most experienced person on Arctic navigation, told us that it was still blocked and he advised us to reduce thr speed not to get too soon.

We did the best, but when the wind came back, dubbing Cape Hope, it was impossible to stay under 9 knots, as the wind was 30/35 knots from the south, blowing angry. There are now 240 miles to Cape Barrow, wind forecasts are great, so in just over 24 hours we will be in the background of the first big ice block ‌

FORNAIOPOLAR E BAKER Oggi giornata molto proficua si procede ad una media di 9 nodi VMG (Velocity Made Good ), in parole semplici significa velocità' nella giusta rotta (read the english version and check Kamana's position at the end of the post). Cielo plumbeo e pioggia ininterrotta ma 25/30 nodi al giardinetto con onda formata, un gran bel navigare.

Ancora 60 miglia per doppiare Cape Barrow ed entrare nel mare di Beaufort lasciando il tetro Chukchi Sea ad ovest.

La temperatura dell'acqua è di 7,5 gradi in costante diminuzione. Abbiamo da poco strambato e siamo ora mure a sinistra preferendo l'allontanamento dalla costa ed i suoi bassifondi. È prevista una rotazione ed un rinforzo del vento a WNW e, navigando in fondali raramente superiori a 35 metri, meglio avere del margine di sicurezza .

Sensibile il cambio di clima dall'ingresso nel Circolo Polare, nonostante l'eccellente isolamento del “Plum” iniziamo ad avere traccia di condensa, a bordo riusciamo a tenere una temperatura di 14 celsius ed un'umidità del 75%, tutti molto contenti di non poter godere del calore del motore da più di 48 ore e pronti al freddo pur di farla tutta a vela.

Molto inusuale il vento teso in questi mari nel periodo estivo, normali invece sporadici regimi di brezze variabili ma, per lo più “bonaccia”.

Navighiamo in compagnia di un rimorchiatore amico, abbiamo conosciuto Bob, il comandante a Nome, è un velista, ha una barca a vela in Florida, è quindi stato subito amore!

Abbiamo velocità simili, ci teniamo compagnia ed il morale alto sperando entrambi di arrivare al punto critico con tempismo, ci auguriamo che i venti dal secondo e terzo quadrante che stanno spirando da ore abbiano “spazzato”il ghiaccio oltre il 72esimo Nord. Altrimenti non avremo possibilità' di ancoraggio e dovremo navigare, anche retrocedere in attesa dell'apertura. Oggi abbiamo chiesto a Bob scherzosamente di poterci accodare a DANA CRUZ , il suo rimorchiatore.

A bordo ci trattiamo bene e la cucina Italiana la fa da padrona, qualche fuorviante acquisto alimentare USA a volte ci fa scherzi ma rimediamo con fantasia. Marcello si è aggiudicato il titolo di “FORNAIO POLARE” West 2017, oltre a pizze e focacce ha sfornato un pane magistrale.

Lamentiamo un errore madornale, ci siamo dimenticati di comperare il burro, per la pasticceria c'è un ripiego ma… per la besciamella ?

A satisfying day. Here we are proceeding with a VMG (Velocity Made Good) of 9 knots, this means we are getting 9 miles closer to our next waypoint every hour.

Skies comparable to lead, fog and drizzle, only interrupted by rain, have not crushed our morale as the 25-30 knots of wind on our stern quarter and 2 meters of following seas have made for some great sailing.

60 miles to go until we round cape Barrow and enter the Beaufort Sea, leaving the gloomy Chukchi Sea to our west.

Water temperature is 7.5deg Celsius and steadily falling.

The event of the day was a gybe around 30 minutes ago, as we chose to sail on port tack and create some distance between us and the low lying coastline with it's shallow depths and shifting sandbanks. The wind is forecast to increase and veer WNW which will have us sailing along a lee shore with no more than 35m of water under the keel. If we can avoid beating against it we'll be safer and more comfortable.

The change of climate as we entered the arctic circle did not go unnoticed; despite Plum's thick hull and wooden interiors providing quality insulation, condensation drips from the windows and the interior temperature fluctuates around 14 degrees. A shy attempt at using some battery power for the heating system is never enough to bring the humidity below 75% inside, as the southerly winds keep bringing up relatively warm moist air and it condenses on top of the cold northern waters. The crew are all adamant to enjoy the sailing and not complain about the lack of engine use, which, had it been on in the last 48 hours, would have given a nice blast of warmth.

The wind we are experiencing is very unusual for this time of year where the maximum speeds are around 15 knots 95% of the time, so we are happy to make the most of it and enjoy the sailing!

An Italian crew obviously means we are spoilt when it comes to food. Some of the ingredients available in Nome aren't quite the same as expected; your average can of tomatoes contains 50 percent tomato and 50 percent sugar. The cooks aren't impressed but with a bit of fantasy and laughter they've remedied most surprises.

Marcello has won the title of “Best Polar Baker of 2017”, with his Pizza, Focaccia, and beautiful loafs of Ciabatta.

Mafio is magically producing “grandma's food”, but is having to study hard to find a way to make grandma's besciamelle, without butter. We disastrously forgot to buy any and the closest thing around here is Walrus blubber.

CAPE BARROW Giornata memorabile a bordo: entrare ed uscire dal primo sbarramento di ghiaccio, a vela a 9 nodi di velocità non era ancora successo a nessuno. Condizioni meteo idilliache ci hanno permesso di trovare (con il super aiuto di Victor) l'apertura del ghiaccio ad ovest di cape Barrow , il passaggio più' critico per la rotta ovest est.

Abbiamo fatto un bellissimo slalom tra i ghiacci dalle forme più' disparate. Dopo 6 ore di grande emozione e tensione abbiamo trovato la via di uscita e proprio lì il vento ci ha abbandonato ed una nebbia fittissima è scesa su di noi costringendoci a rallentare ed a mantenere la doppia guardia a prua ed al timone. Sono state ore impegnative ed indimenticabili , dopo l'uscita abbiamo festeggiato con un ottimo tè caldo ma, come suggerito dal comandante, senza abbassare il livello di guardia.

Dopo circa altre 2 ore infatti incontriamo una placca di ghiaccio che si era staccata dalla quella principale che fino a pochi giorni fa costituiva un unico pezzo dal nord Alaska fino al polo Nord.

Ora cerchiamo di recuperare qualche ora di sonno ed alzare le nostre temperature corporee!

A memorable day onboard Kamana Sailing Expedition, no-one has ever had the fortune of entering, cIdyllic weather conditions and Victor's super routing, allowed us to find the only viable opening in the ice north of Cape Barrow, this is the most crucial part of the West-East Northwest passage.

We slalomed through icebergs of the most unusual shapes.

After 6 hours of emotion and at moments clenched teeth, we found the exit. Then and there, the wind died down and a thick fog blanketed us forcing us to keep a lookout from both the bow and the stern. It was both challenging and memorable. After the exit, we celebrated with a warm tea but, as the Captain reminded us, we didn't let our guard down too much.

After another two hours in fact, we came across a huge expanse of floes that had detached themselves from the main plaque.

This was, until a few days ago, a singly icy sheet connecting northern Alaska to the North Pole.

Time to catch up a few hours of sleep and raise our body temperatures…

TOWARDS KAKTOVIK

HAVE AN Dopo aver passato 15 ore all'altezza del 72esimo parallelo nord navigando verso Est e teoricamente usciti dalla zona “rossa”, mettiamo la prua a Sud Est. Con sorpresa incontriamo ancora ghiacci di dimensioni importanti ma di non preoccupante densità.

Poco fa non vedevamo neanche la prua per la tanta nebbia, ma ora Plum ancora premiata da Eolo continua a veleggiare verso Kaktovik (70.08 N 143.40 W) e l'isola di Barter, con una leggerissima brezza, il mare calmo ed un sole splendente andiamo a ridossarci da una “sventolata” da Est prevista domani. Il vero motivo di questo stop over non è di evitare una lunga bolina bensì cercare un'altra esperienza unica…

Meno di 70 miglia ci separano dal'immancabile incontro. Stay tuned and …..HAVE AN ICE DAY After 15 hours heading East along the seventy-second parallel of latitude, we are theoretically outside the danger area so we alter course to SE. We are surprised to find yet more icebergs of varying sizes though the concentration of them was not worrying.

Plum, still blessed by Eolo, Greek God of wind, continues to sail towards KAKTOVIC (70.08 N 143.40 W) and Barter Island. A gentle breeze, calm sea and splendid sunshine, carry her to an anchorage where she can finally rest during the strong Easterlies forecast for tomorrow. As well as avoiding beating into the wind, we're stopping here in the search for another rare experience…

Altro obiettivo raggiunto a bordo e, come nella vita, la fortuna va ringraziata come si deve: oggi brindiamo!

Ci è stato riferito dalle barche alle nostre spalle, che il passaggio nel ghiaccio di cape Barrow si è completamente richiuso, ricompattato dallo stesso vento che ci ha fatti veleggiare veloci nella unica e temporanea frattura dei ghiacci. Difficile da descrivere, solo ora realizziamo di essere passati in una pericolosa morsa che era pronta a serrarci “freddamente”.

Rallegrati dallo scampato pericolo, abbiamo continuato la nostra veleggiata in acque particolarmente calme nel Mar Artico, fino al nostro Waypoint, in cerca di un incontro avvicinato… pur sapendo sarebbe stato improbabile incontrare il più grosso mammifero carnivoro sul pianeta: l'ORSO POLARE! Solo a Kaktovik è certo incontrarlo, ma solamente per 2 settimane nel mese di agosto.

Il villaggio è di 200 anime, 150 delle quali sono indigeni che vivono di caccia ai Caribù e pesca di balene per sussistenza. L'insediamento sul confine col Canada consiste in: un negozio, un medico, un ufficio postale ed una pista di atterraggio. Dopo la pesca, la balena viene trascinata sulla spiaggia e divisa equamente tra gli abitanti.

Pensano gli orsi a pulire le carcasse, conoscono l'evento ed allo sciogliersi dei ghiacci fanno una nuotata anche di 300 miglia per partecipare alla “sagra del villaggio”. Anche loro fanno scorte per il rigido inverno che tra poco più di un mese sarà di nuovo alle porte.

Finita la polpa e leccate le ossa si crea spesso un po' di traffico, gestito dal Guardia Orsi che dall'alto, pattuglia la spiaggia armato sparando in aria per spaventare eventuali “orsacchiotti“ intenti a spostarsi in centro per un caffè o forse a comprare il burro…

Atterriamo oggi nel “luogo dell'appuntamento”, in anticipo di qualche settimana…

Sono le 06.55 “local time”, posizione N 70 08.620' W 143 39', non abbiamo ancora dato fondo in meno di 4 metri d'acqua, quando il comandante avvista un orso che passeggia sulla spiaggia… Eccolo nella foto presa dal drone, con l'abilità suprema ormai raggiunta dal capitano nel manovrarlo…

Today's ice chart revealed the passage north of cape Barrow has completely closed up, compacted by the same breeze that initially allowed us to sail swiftly through during the temporary fracture.

It's hard to describe the emotion that flooded us as we realized we had essentially passed through a sort of vice, that could have dangerously shut at any moment. Had we waited a day longer, we would have had no option but to wait the next southerlies, as the only area of slightly lower density ice is by the coast, over water too shallow for our draught and still too dense for comfort.

We knew it was improbable that we would meet the earth's largest carnivorous mammal, the only animal other than the tiger who will hunt a man (source of info to be verified): the POLAR BEAR! The only time you can expect to see them in Kaktovic is the last two weeks of august. This is a settlement with a population of around 200, 75% of which are indigenous Inuit. For whom whale and caribou hunting are an important part of their subsistence lifestyle. Kaktovic also has a shop, a health clinic, a post office, and an air strip.

A caught whale gets dragged onto the beach all parts are distributed amongst the community. The polar bears, busy out hunting seal on the ice floes 300 miles north, look forward to this event and swim back towards land to enjoy the “village faire”, and clean the carcasses.

They also stock up as much body fat as they can to prepare for the winter which is already only a few months away.

When the meat is finished, and the bones licked clean, there's a bit of bear traffic around town. The Bear Guards deal with this by shooting into the air when one of the “teddies” tries to wonder in for a coffee, maybe buy some butter, or send a letter.

We reach the “meeting point” a couple of weeks early.

At 0655 local time on the 27th July, in Position 70º 08.6' N , 143º 39.0' W, as we prep the anchor, the Captain spots a bear strolling down the beach….

HERSCHEL ISLAND

Welcome

27 luglio Siamo atterrati ad Herschel island (N 69 34' W 138 55') alle 02.00 LT. Si tratta dell'isola più occidentale del Canada, è stata un'importante base per la caccia ed il commercio delle balene dal 1903 al 1920 ed è ora disabitata. Vecchie costruzioni di legno sono in ristrutturazione a spese del governo, ci sono solo 2 abitazioni complete a disposizione dei visitatori per lo più' ricercatori, 2 Rangers ed una sauna a disposizione dei pochi visitatori.

Sbarcati per presentarci siamo egregiamente accolti dal guardiano dell'unico piccolo approdo, una foca barbuta. E, a proposito di animali fantastici, la volete conoscere “la storia dell'orso”?

Sapete come ha reagito alla nostra presenza questo splendido esemplare di circa 3 anni e 500 kg di peso? Come un modello. Sembrava passeggiare sulla spiaggia in attesa di fare un servizio fotografico: non troppo sorpreso alla vista del drone ed attento a guardare nell'obbiettivo mentre sfila sul bagnasciuga, prima si tuffa in mare poi nuota e si immerge, ma sempre assicurandosi di essere seguito ed inquadrato nei suoi movimenti naturali e graziati, sia a terra che in acqua .

Grazie ancora natura per l'ennesimo grande regalo.

Ci ridosseremo ad aspettare il passaggio di un fronte, avremo circa 30 ore per cercare nuove forti emozioni.

July 27 We dropped anchor on the east side of Herschel Island ( 69º34'N 138º55'W) at 0200 Local Time on the 27th of July. This is the western-most island of Canada which, between 1903 and 1920, was a successful whaling station providing oil.

Now, it's uninhabited, but alive with visitors, researchers, and two park rangers. The buildings, including a Sauna open to the public, are maintained by the rangers, who welcomed us warmly as we landed on the island with the tender.

Also to welcome us, a bearded seal soaking up the sun by the pontoon.

And, talking about animals, would you like to know about yhe bear? How could we not tell you about this splendid sample, about 3 years old and weighing 500kg.

He seemed to be waiting for a photoshoot, strolling up and down the beach, not too surprised at the sight of the drone, and carefully watching the lense as he let himself slide into the water. He graciously dived under, after posing one more time for the camera.

Thanks again mother nature, for the umpteenth present.

The plan is to shelter in this bay while the front passes over us; we've got about 30 hours to hunt for some more emotions.

HERSCHEL ISLAND Trovare ridosso in un bellissimo parco, essere accolti da persone incredibili ed incontrare altri naviganti polari non bastava alla buona sorte che ci assiste… Come da previsione monta il vento ed il mare, il nostro non è solo un sicuro ancoraggio, ma anche uno spot da sogno per il Kitesurf.

Non ci sognavamo nemmeno di farlo nel Mare Artico.

Un aquilone, un imbrago da roccia ed una tuta da sopravvivenza a bordo di Plum si trova sempre quindi… aria alle pompe!

Sbarchiamo sulla spiaggia più indicata, abbiamo 25 nodi da terra ed un sole splendente: non ci resta che godere.

Finita la nostra sessione di kite c'è qualcuno più eccitato di noi, si tratta del giovane ranger Edward, che per la prima volta vede praticare questo sport al Polo.

Edward accende la sauna dell'insediamento dopodiché guardiamo l'orologio che segna mezzanotte e mezza… ops abbiamo saltato sia il pranzo che la cena saziati da sport e natura: ora a bordo per una pasta e domani all'alba si salpa.

Finding shelter in a beautiful National Park, being welcomed by incredible people, and meeting other polar navigators apparently wasn't enough.

As forecast, the wind and sea state increase and the eyes onboard start to see Pauline Cove, not just as a shelter, but also as a heavenly kitesurf spot. So far we hadn't conceived letting the icy waters of the arctic sea anywhere near our bodies!

A kite, a climbing harness, and survival suit can always be found onboard plum…. air to the pumps!

We land back on the seal beach, with 25 knots side off and a warm, bright sun. The only job for us is to enjoy it.

At the end of our session, there is one person more excited than us. It's the young park ranger Edward, who has never seen anyone kite in the arctic circle before!

Edward turns the “town” sauna on but with a glance at our watches, we realize it's half past midnight. Oops: we missed both lunch and dinner, satisfied enough with sport and nature. Back onboard for a pasta, and tomorrow at dawn we head east.

TOWARDS CAMBRIDGE BAY

Trenta nodi pieni in faccia Thirty knots full in the face

La giornata era iniziata bene… svegli alle 6 di mattina, scarichiamo l'ultimo aggiornamento meteo e visto che le previsioni sembrano buone, decidiamo di salpare.

Dovremmo avere un vento di 20 nodi circa a 70/80 gradi a dritta per le prime 24 ore, per poi girare e rinforzare, consentendoci di arrivare quasi alla nostra prossima meta, Cambridge Bay, che si trova 750 miglia a est di Herschel Island.

Mentre salpiamo l'ancora però, il gommone della nave Canadese da Ricerca e Soccorso, ancorata fuori dalla baia, si affianca e il primo ufficiale sale a bordo. Sapeva che saremo salpati oggi e voleva farsi dare tutti i contatti per poterci monitorare, compreso il nostro link per il tracking. Come sempre gentilissimi, ci aggiornano della situazione generale dell'Artico, confermandoci anche, che la zona est dell'Artico, dove dovremmo passare noi tra un paio di settimane è ancora totalmente bloccata dai ghiacci. Perfino 2 rompighiaccio sono in attesa di condizioni migliori…

La cosa non ci rallegra, ma ora il nostro obiettivo è Cambridge Bay, e quello di arrivarci il prima possibile, per accogliere in tempo il resto dell'equipaggio.

Salpiamo cosi l'ancora e passiamo a salutare le due barche di amici ancorate vicino a noi. Visto le condizioni con venti di bolina, hanno deciso di aspettare una finestra meteo più idonea alle loro barche. Ci diamo appuntamento a Cambridge Bay, e cosi prendiamo il largo.

Da subito però le condizioni che troviamo non sono buone come quelle previste. Il vento è ancora bello teso. L'onda, formatasi anche dalla burrasca che ha soffiato ieri, è in faccia e particolarmente cattiva. Ci è impossibile quindi tenere la rotta sul nostro primo punto, ma confidiamo in un veloce miglioramento come tutte le previsioni confermano.

Il vento però continua ad aumentare e cosi anche il mare. Navigare con 30 nodi in faccia nel Mar Artico, non è cosi piacevole… L'onda è sproporzionata rispetto al vento e la cosa più importante è tenere la velocità sotto i 9 nodi, visto che l'impatto con una onda di acqua ghiacciata è decisamente più brutale che con una stessa massa d'acqua a temperatura tropicale.

Il mare fa impressione. Plum, come al solito, ci aiuta ad uscire da ogni situazione difficile come questa, anche se il ponte viene spesso spazzato completamente da tonnellate di spuma rabbiosa.

Ora abbiamo da poco virato, per non andare troppo a nord e avvicinarci in una zona pericolosa di ghiacci. In poche ore dovremmo navigare finalmente con un sostenuto vento in poppa, che ci farà correre verso la nostra destinazione.

Everybody is awake at 6am, we download the latest weather forecast and, as it appears good for us, we decide to leave We were expecting to close reach on starboard tack with about 20knots of breeze for the first 24 hours, then let the veering, increasing wind, push us towards Cambridge Bay, 750nm East of Herschel island.

Half way through hauling anchor, a Canadian Coast Guard RIB from the SAR craft anchored outside Pauline Cove comes along side and the First Officer is welcomed onboard. Knowing we were planning of leaving today, he asks for all our details including satellite tracking so he could monitor us in the interest of safety. As always, the coastguard was really kind. He updates us on the general sea, weather and ice conditions for the Arctic and confirms that the Eastern Arctic is still pack ice.

There are even two icebreakers waiting for better conditions…

The news isn't great but our current objective is to arrive in Cambridge Bay as early as possible, in time to meet the rest of the crew.

Up comes the anchor then a little motor round the bay to say farewell to our two friends, also anchored in Herschel Island. They are going to wait until better weather conditions for their boats so we agree to meet up in Cambridge Bay, and off we go.

From the start, the weather conditions are not as good as forecast. The easterly winds we were sheltering from are still strong, and the sea state, still growing after yesterday's gale, is right on our bow and rather uncomfortable.

We cannot keep our heading anywhere near our first waypoint, but we are happy knowing it will improve as the various forecast sources suggest.

The wind however, keeps increasing along with the sea and onboard we all agree that 30knots on the nose in the Arctic sea are not so pleasant… especially as the waves are disproportionate compared to the wind. Our biggest challenge is to keep our speed below 9 knots, cold water is more dense and the impact with each wave is noticeably more violent than a similar situation in tropical waters.

The sea state is rough, but Plum, as usual, helps us come out of any difficult situation, even if her deck is continuously washed over with tonnes of angry white foam.

We've just tacked to avoid going to far north into potentially icy waters. We hope that within a few hours we'll be sailing with a steady breeze on our port quarter, which will carry us swiftly to our destination.

POINT PIERCE

Primo agosto Ore 16.30 LT diamo fondo nel paradiso di Point Pierce. Solo un'abitazione abbandonata (ex check point di polizia) nel mezzo di una baia mozzafiato con spiaggia bianche ed acqua color smeraldo. La previsione si rivela accuratissima ed alle 19.00 entra il vento da EST sostenuto. Passeremo la luminosa notte qui e domattina salperemo con il sud ovest che ci accompagnerà verso Cambridge Bay. Speriamo il vento si alzi presto per un'altra sessione di Kite polare.

2 agosto Super veleggiata anche oggi. Il vento previsto è arrivato puntuale e stamattina abbiamo rinunciato alla sessione di Kite per non perdere l'occasione di guadagnare altre 120 miglia a vela verso Cambridge Bay dove abbiamo l'appuntamento per imbarcare il resto dell'equipaggio.

Alle 06.00 Local Time siamo salpati dal magnifico Pierce Point.

Angolo al vento perfetto e tutta tela, velocità' media di 9,7 nodi, solo un po' di inspiegabile onda in prua a darci fastidio.

Il primo tramonto lo abbiamo visto stasera dopo molto tempo, ci siamo ormai abituati a navigare con 24 ore di luce, ora ci riabitueremo progressivamente ad avere sempre più buio.

250 miglia ci separano da Cambridge Bay.

1st of August At 1630 Local Time, we anchor in paradise, namely Point Pearce Harbour.

There's one abandoned building (an old police check point), in the middle of a bay with breathtaking white beaches and emerald water.

The forecast turns out to be accurate and at 1900 the easterly wind starts to blow. We will spend this luminous evening here, and pick up the south westerlies in the morning to travel towards Cambridge Bay. Fingers crossed for an early, windy start; we might get another polar kite session in before leaving!

August 2 This morning, the forecast wind arrived on time so we sacrificed our kite session to make the most of it and munch through another 120NM under sail.

At 0600 Local time we left the magnificent Pierce Point Harbour.

Perfect wind angle, full main and genoa kept the average speed at 9.7knots. Only complaint were the steep waves from the bow that poor Plum had to hammer through.

Tonight we saw our first sunset, a crimson red that cannot be found elsewhere.

We've been spoilt by the 24 hours of sunlight but I guess we'll slowly have to get used to more and more hours of darkness.

3 agosto Solo 87 miglia ci separano da Cambridge Bay. Nonostante il vento sia finito ed il paesaggio non sia dei più vari ed accattivanti su Plum non ci si annoia. I problemi alle bussole ed ai GPS, dovuti al magnetismo e riscontrati sino a qui non interferivano sensibilmente sulla nostra navigazione ma da Point Pearce le cose sono cambiate.

Navighiamo nel Dease Strait, una moltitudine di basse e brulle isole filiformi in mare che sembra olio, cercando di mediare tra le letture delle bussole e quelle dei GPS, a volte nessuna però è affidabile. Grazie alla buona visibilità riusciamo a fare i rilevamenti dei pochi punti cospicui. Da giorni non incontriamo imbarcazioni, oggi solo un folto gruppo di foche ci ha accompagnato.

Il nuovo rapporto sui ghiacci non è dei migliori.

Ad Est (per noi l'uscita in Atlantico) è ancora quasi totalmente ghiacciato, per l'esattezza 9/9+ (concentrazione del ghiaccio 90%).

Sappiamo che qualche imbarcazione intenta del passaggio a Nord Ovest classico (da est a ovest) in attesa in Greenland dello scioglimento ha rinunciato, chi mette la prua a sud e chi cerca un posto sicuro dove svernare per ritentare l'estate prossima.

Mai disperare e sempre fiduciosi.

Il nostro prezioso router Victor dice che saremo la prima barca ad arrivare a Cambridge Bay quest'anno, l'unica barca nella storia ad arrivare cosi presto nella stagione, ed inoltre la prima imbarcazione che ha navigato a vela per l'80% della rotta! Siamo solo a metà estate e crediamo ancora che i ghiacci ci lasceranno uno spazio d'uscita, non ci resta che essere sempre pronti a cogliere la prima ragionevole occasione.

August 3 Despite the perfectly still air and the monotonous view, onboard Plum no-one is fed up. The erratic swinging of the compasses and poor GPS signals had not been to much of a problem until Point Pearce. Since then, and especially on entering the Dease strait, a multitude of low lying, deserted islands have surrounded us in a sea that closely resembles oil in colour, density, and for the mirror-like surface. We feel our way through them trying to average out all the varying data the onboard equipment is giving us.

Sometimes however, none of these are close to reliable so we thank the good visibility and navigate by sight. We haven't seen a single boat for days, but to keep us company today a crowd of seals curiously popped their heads up around Plum.

The new ice report is the not the best we could hope for. In the eastern Arctic, our passage into the Atlantic, the sea ice has a concentration of 9/10. The unusually high concentration for this time of year is due to icebergs further north melting and pushing the sea ice southwards. As the maximum recommended concentration for a safe passage is 3/10, it is not surprising that a number of the boats sitting in Greenland waiting to cross from East to West have already considered heading back south or looking for a safe place to over-winter, ready to make another attempt next year. Of course we don't despair and we remain hopeful. If all things keep running as smoothly as they have been we may just be the first boat to Cambridge Bay this year, the only boat in history to arrive so early in the season, and the quickest in terms of days from Nome. We are only half way through the summer and the ice still has a month to melt, opening up an exit passage. All we can do is stay ready to seize the opportunity when it comes.

4 agosto Ore 14.00 LT Plum da fondo nella baia di Cambridge Bay, un insediamento di meno di duemila anime che fa parte dei territori del nord ovest del Canada. Rappresenta una tappa obbligatoria per tutte le imbarcazioni che tentano il passaggio a nord ovest, l'arrivo dei navigatori è l'unica vera attrazione estiva. Più che gentili e cordiali, ci accolgono come fratelli e senza nemmeno conoscerci ci prestano un'auto, aprono le loro case per offrirci da mangiare, bere, e offrirci l'uso delle loro lavatrici .

Parlare con loro ti fa perdere il senso del tempo, le parole fretta e stress qui non esistono, tutti sorridono e si godono questi 20 gradi che durano solo qualche settimana.

Siamo sbarcati per fare l'ingresso in Canada e per comprare qualcosa di fresco, un lavoro di non più' di un ora , siamo tornati a bordo dopo 7 ore. Traspare la voglia di comunicare con chi viene da lontano di essere d'aiuto e lasciare un ottimo ricordo della loro terra ed i suoi abitanti.

Ora abbiamo qualche giorno di preparazione.

August 4 14,00 Local Time. Plum anchors in Cambridge Bay, a settlement of under 2000 souls in Canada's Northwest Territories. It's an obligatory stop for vessels doing the Northwest Passage, and the arrival of the sailors is the major summer attraction for the locals.

Kind and generous is an understatement. They welcome us like brothers and before even knowing who we are, we are handed the keys of a 5.7litre dodge and are subsequently invited into a house to eat, sleep, drink wine, wash clothes, and more.

Speaking with the locals makes you lose the sense of time. The words “hurry” or “stress” do not exist here, everybody smiles and soaks in the 20 degree temperatures that will only be felt for a few weeks. The aim of our trip ashore was to clear customs and buy some fresh food. 7 hours later, here we are back on the boat without having completed our tasks. Their desire to comunicate with people from far, to help, and mostly to leave a good memory of themselves and of their land, is evident and warming.

A few days of boat cuddling are to follow.

CAMBRIDGE BAY 7 agosto La famiglia Kamana è finalmente al completo. Raggiungono l'equipaggio Giulia, il piccolo Kai – moglie e figlio del comandante – e i compagni di avventura Davide ed Anna Serra con i quattro figli Sofia, Tommaso, Anita e Filippo.

Da 6 anni Davide Serra e la sua famiglia sono promotori e sostenitori del progetto Kamana con i Tettamanti e raggiungono Plum nelle esplorazioni più estreme del pianeta, dai tropici ai poli vivendo questa esperienza come valore educativo di crescita per tutta la famiglia.

Oggi rimaniamo ancorati in baia, aspettando che si sciolga il ghiaccio che chiude il passaggio a Est che per ora rimane ai massimi livelli di concentrazione. Decidiamo allora di dedicare la giornata alla scoperta di Cambridge Bay e dintorni. Facciamo conoscenza con una famiglia Inuit con 5 figli dai 13 ai 4 anni che ci porta a visitare la loro “cabin” di fronte al Mount Pelly ad un ora di distanza da Cambridge Bay. A bordo di 3 quad e 2 pick-up fuori strada attraversiamo paesaggi lunari costellati di laghetti e acquitrini.

Non un albero, non un arbusto: la vera tundra!

Dopo un accogliente pasto a base di stufato di caribù riscaldato sul fuoco improvvisato sulla spiaggia, iniziamo l'ascesa del mount Pelly con il piccolo Kai portato sulla schiena del papà Enrico con il tradizionale vestito portabebè Inuit.

Ritorniamo verso Plum al calare di un sole che non tramonta mai, in tempo per festeggiare il compleanno del capitano a base di lasagne e crostata di Mafio!

August 7 The Kamana Family is finally complete with the arrival of Giulia and little Kai, wife and son of the Captain, and their adventure buddies Davide and Anna Serra with their four children: Sofia, Tommaso, Anita and Filippo.

For six years Davide and Anna have been promoting and supporting the Kamana project and joining the Tettamanti family in the exploration of the most extreme parts of the planet. Travelling from the tropics to the poles never ceases to be a valuable opportunity to grow and learn for the whole family.

Today we stay at anchor to give the pack ice, still in high concentrations, time to melt. We decide use the time to the discover of Cambridge Bay and the surrounding area. An Inuit family with 5 children aged 13 to 4 invite us to their cabin in the country, right at the foot of Mount Pelly. It's a one hour journey on 3 quad bikes at 2 pick-ups, crossing lunar landscapes dotted with lakes.

Not a single tree, not a single shrub, it's the true Tundra!

After a welcoming Caribou Stew, heated on the open fire, we begin the ascent of Mount Pelly with little Kai happily sitting on Daddy Enrico's back in a traditional Inuit carrier.

We head back towards Plum during the everlasting arctic sunset, in time to celebrate the Captain's Birthday with Lasagne and Cake made by Mafio!

SIMPSON STRAIT 8 Agosto Ore 21.50 Local Time salpiamo da Cambridge Bay con equipaggio al completo e facciamo rotta su Gjoa Haven (N 68°37' – W 95°53').

Situato a Sud Est dell'isola King William, originariamente è stato un luogo di accampamento della tribù Inuit Nestilik da loro nominato “Uqsuqtuuq”, che significa “molto grasso”, in riferimento alle ottime opportunità di caccia. È tutt'ora un importante centro di manufatti tradizionali.

Nel 1903 Amundsen vi trovò riparo passando ben due inverni, portando avanti esperimenti scientifici ed imparando dagli Inuit tecniche di caccia, viaggio e sopravvivenza. Protetto da tutti i venti, è stato descritto dal nostromo di Amundsen il migliore piccolo porto al mondo.

L'ultimo censimento ufficiale del 2011 contava una popolazione di 1279 abitanti.

Mai smetteremo di ringraziare la natura, come da previsioni meteo arriva puntuale il vento favorevole che ci fa veleggiare per ben 200 miglia delle 250 che dividono Cambridge bay da Gjoa Haven.

Inaspettato l'incontro con nuovo ghiaccio portato sulla nostra rotta dal teso vento da Nord, nessun problema per Plum che esce ancora una volta a “prua alta“ dallo slalom tra i ghiacci.

Degno di nota il fatto di aver incrociato alle 16.30 il rompighiaccio nucleare “Amundsen”, la prima barca che arriva da EST attraverso i ghiacci, curioso trovarci a “metà” del Passaggio a Nord Ovest.

Abbiamo comunicato con il comandante, che ci ha gentilmente concesso la precedenza e aggiornato sulla situazione ghiaccio. Si è anche congratulato con noi per essere la prima barca avvistata quest'anno.

Fin troppo veloci arriviamo all'ingresso del fatidico Simpson Strait, dove ancoriamo aspettando il cambio della marea e la conseguente corrente favorevole che può raggiungere 8 nodi in combinazione di fase lunare e rotazione terrestre.

A bordo tutto eccellente: siamo carichi e confidenti, le ultime carte dei ghiacci indicano un inizio di apertura a ridosso delle linee costiere, un sensibile miglioramento rispetto a pochi giorni fa ma ancora assolutamente non navigabile.

August 8 On the 8th of August, at 2150 Local Time, we left Cambridge Bay with the full crew and head towards Gjoa Haven, (68°37'N 95°53'W).

The village, found SE of King William Island, was originally an Inuit settlement of the Nestilik community. They called it Uqsuqtuuq which means “very fat”, referring to the abundant hunting in the area. Today, it's still an important centre for traditional arts and crafts.

In 1903 and the following winter, Amundsen sheltered in Gjoa Haven while carrying out scientific research and learning the Inuit way of life: hunting, travelling and survival.

Amundsen's Bosun described the bay as the world's best small harbour as it's protected from all winds.

The last census (2011) recorded 1279 inhabitants.

Like every day, we owe nature our thanks. As forecast, fair winds from astern allowed us to sail 200 miles of the 250 to Gjoa. Bergy bits which had been blown southwards onto our track were unexpectedly sighted but this was no problem for Plum as she glided through the murky sea, dodging any obstacles.

At 1630 we crossed paths with the nuclear powered CG icebreaker “Amundsen”, the first boat to arrive here from the East. We enjoyed a mid-way chat with the Captain who kindly updated us on the ice situation and congratulated us for being the first boat sighted this year.

Almost too fast, we reached the notorious Simpson Strait where we anchored to wait for the tide, which reaches up to 8 knots, to turn in our favor.

Onboard, everything is excellent and everybody is energetic and confident. The updated ice charts show the beginnings of an opening along the coastline; it's looking much better than just a few days ago but it's still far from navigable.

GJOA HAVEN

INUIT

Dopo 30 ore di navigazione intensa, Plum da fondo nelle gelide acque di Gjoa Haven, ma sotto il buon auspicio di un tiepido sole. Lo scenario rimane unico, terre basse e sabbiose, vecchie barche arenate sulla riva. Vediamo ragazzi inuit sfrecciare sulle strade sterrate a bordo di motoslitte. Scendiamo tutti a terra per la spesa e il capo della polizia ci dà un caldo benvenuto offrendoci l'accesso all'unico wi-fi disponibile in paese, quello della centrale. In cambio li invitiamo per una visita a bordo di Plum per un caffè e torta di mele. Riceviamo l'esclusivo certificato di attestazione della polizia per aver raggiunto Gjoa Haven localizzata a 240 km nord del Circolo Polare Artico.

Dalla polizia impariamo cose nuove: terre e abitazioni sono di proprietà del governo in concessione agli indigeni, che percepiscono un sussidio mensile di 450 dollari canadesi a testa. Il costo della vita però non è proporzionale: fare la spesa è proibitivo: un'arancia costa quasi 10 dollari e una baracca prefabbricata di sole due stanze 600.000 dollari!

Cena garantita dal nostro pescatore ufficiale che non perde mai occasione di calare l'amo: zuppa di merluzzo artico per tutti!

After 30 hours of intense navigation, Plum pulls into Gjoa Haven, the sea dark and cold but the sun bright and welcoming. The scenery is always unique, sandy shores with old, battered boats abandoned at the waters edge. We see Inuit children riding their snowmobiles across the dusty roads of the village.

Once on land, we head off to do some shopping. On our way meet the chief policeman who gives us a warm welcome and offers us access to the only wifi available in the village. In return we invite him onboard for a cup of coffee and a slice of apple cake. The police awards us with the exclusive certificate of affirmation for having reached Gjoa Haven – found.

The police also informs us that the lands and dwellings are government property and that indigenous people get a subsidy of 450 canadian dollars per month.

However the cost of living is not proportional; to buy a single orange one has to pay almost 10 dollars (equivalent to 8 euros) and for a two bedroom shack 600,000 dollars!

Anyhow, our day ends with a warm dinner of arctic cod soup – freshly caught by our fisherman onboard.

TOWARDS TALOYOAK

evviva l’Italia!

13 agosto Come da preciso programma del nostro comandante, salpiamo alle 7.35 local time da Gjoa Haven ed approfittando di uno splendido sud est con mare piatto. Plum sfreccia a 9 nodi verso la nostra nuova meta, Taloyoak, distante 90 miglia.

Il piccolo accampamento situato a sud della penisola di Boothia, popolato da poco meno di 900 anime, è stato fondato nel 1947 dagli abitanti del vicino Fort Ross che era stato in quell'epoca evacuato. Taloyoak in inuit Talurjuaq significa “grande scudo”, in riferimento alla protezione usata durante la caccia ai caribù.

Il nostro amato Victor, che ci segue incessantemente ci ha appena comunicato che questa mattina, per avere sfidato l'ice pack non ancora aperto, un'imbarcazione tedesca che stava facendo il nostro stesso percorso, si è incagliata in un basso fondo di una baia sfuggendo ad un'alta concentrazione di ghiaccio.

Victor ci ha detto anche che negli ultimi 30 anni solo 4 barche si sono fermate a Taloyoak – saremo quindi noi la quinta barca nella storia!

E mentre gli adulti pensano alla navigazione i piccoli si occupano della panificazione.

Oggi oltre al pane quotidiano impastiamo anche focacce e piadine, indispensabili per godere a pieno del prosciutto “pata negra 5 anni” che oggi inauguriamo accompagnato da uno speciale formaggio corso.

Ostentiamo la nostra italianità a 360 gradi, il nostro amore per il mare e la navigazione a vela, la nostra curiosità e fantasia.

August 13 As planned by our captain, we haul anchor at 07.35 in Gjoa Haven.

Making the most of splendid south easterlies and a flat sea, Plum glides towards our next port of call Taloyoak. We have 90 miles to cover and are travelling at a speed of 9 knots. The small settlement on the southern end of the Boothia Peninsula, with 900 inhabitants, was founded in 1947 when the village of Fort Ross was closed down and people relocated. Talurjuaq, the settlement name in Inuit, means big shield used for protection during Caribou hunting.

Our guru Victor continues to track us; he warns us to be careful after a German yacht ahead of us reports having run aground in an attempt to escape an area of high ice concentration. We shall not underestimate ice nor it's strength and speed. On a more positive note, he also informed us that in the last 30 years, only four yachts have stopped at Taloyoak; we look forward to experiencing the locals' welcome!

While the adults concentrate on navigating, the younger ones deal with the much more important… BAKING! Today we're kneading dough for bread, focaccia and wraps, all essential to enjoy the whole Pata Negra 5 J which will be opened today along with Corsican cheeses.

We show off our “italian-ness” in all possible ways: our love for the sea and sailing, our curiosity and our fantasy. From the oldest to the youngest, everybody is attentive and hard working to make our marvelous trip even more special and memorable.

We're grateful to mother nature for the nonstop string of presents conceded. Idyllic weather allows us to plough through the ocean powered by sails alone, and warms the air to 20 degrees under the splendid sunshine. It's august at the North Pole too after all! We consider a polar swim but the water is at 7 degrees.

Non si tratta solo di ottenere informazioni sul comportamento del ghiaccio e di sorprese dovute alla particolare orografia in combinazione con fenomeni atmosferici unici ed effetti ottici incredibili, come miraggi ma anche di informazioni sulla cultura e le abitudini dei pochi villaggi Nunavut.

Fatevi dare consigli per luoghi adatti alla pesca dello char artico, ce ne sono di eccezionali. Buon vento Victor Da buoni esploratori vogliamo sempre toccare con mano, vivere il luogo e le persone e anche dare a Victor un aggiornato feed back da poter mettere a disposizione degli altri. However there is one person who we owe our infinite thanks for all his help and knowledge. Josephine Bay and Josephine river, Nunavut, are located on the southwest coast of the Booth Peninsula. They were discovered in 1831 by the English polar explorer John Ross who named them in honor of Josephine – Napoleon's grandaughter – who in 1823 married the future king Oscar I of Sweden and Norway. Treat Josephine Bay with respect and you will be rewarded. Ernie and Bill Lyall created Taloyoak in the late 1940th by moving Fort Ross there, including some of the buildings. Taloyoak is a very inviting place and will be crowded by the kids. There is a stone carver there who can make you anything just overnight for almost nothing and a big smile.

Expect sudden fog coming and and disappearing. One of my buddies got lost there in Zodiac for many hours in 1987 and SAR at that time would arrive no sooner than in 5 days. As fog lifted he was found.

Seek information on where you can do some arctic char fishing. There are some exceptional places.

La condizione dei ghiacci è ancora molto complessa.

Per questo motivo ci troviamo costretti ad aspettare a Taloyoak finché l'ice pack darà segni di cedimento. L'anno scorso il 7 agosto già si passava, ma la situazione quest'anno è diversa: ad oggi è ancora tutto bloccato tra un mix di ghiaccio solido e venti che tengono bloccati i passaggi Larsen e Peel.

Il rompighiaccio nucleare Amundsen che abbiamo incrociato in navigazione ci ha mandato oggi un'immagine – nella foto di apertura – della situazione dello stato del ghiaccio reale nel canale Larsen. Il governo canadese ogni giorno aggiorna Ice report con elaborazioni da Satellite e noi riusciamo a fare download con il nostro sistema Satellitare Iridium.

Qui a fianco la situazione dei ghiacci e la guida che spiega al capitano la miglior rotta.

Quest'anno ci sono 14 barche che stanno tentando il passaggio a Nord Ovest da Est verso Ovest e 11 da Ovest verso Est come noi. Le barche che sono ancora in Groenlandia difficilmente riusciranno a passare perché il ghiaccio le tiene in Groenlandia e la finestra di apertura ice pack in genere si chiude a fine Agosto. Da inizio settembre la meteo cambia e ai primi di ottobre il mare inizia a ghiacciare di nuovo. Ci sono 3000 miglia nautiche da fare dalla Groenlandia per andare a Nome in Alaska. Troppo pericoloso.

Da Ovest verso Est, come stiamo tentando noi, di solito è molto più difficile. Ma il fatto che siamo riusciti ad arrivare sino a qui bene e velocemente adesso ci da vantaggio. Delle 11 barche noi siamo in posizione perfetta, più a Nord e soprattutto con vento a favore. Possiamo percorrere 200 miglia al giorno e gli stretti pericolosi Larsen e Peel sono un giorno di navigazione.

Dovendo aspettare lo scioglimento dei ghiacci, oggi siamo sbarcati alla scoperta di Talotoak.

I mille abitanti di Taloyoak vivono di caccia e pesca, non potendo coltivare nulla, e prendono tutte le loro vitamine dal grasso e pelle della balena che contiene più vitamina C delle arance. Questo ha permesso loro di sopravvivere nei secoli. Oggi a Taloyoak, abbiamo incontrato il Conservation Officer David Anavilok, capo del WWF locale. Ogni anno il Conservation Officer rilascia un numero chiuso di permessi di caccia e pesca per il villaggio.

The best way to describe the ice situation is… complex. Hence the wait at anchor in Taloyoak.

Last year the passage opened up on the 7th of August but this year, the Larsen and Peel passages are still completely blocked up with pack ice. The nuclear powered ice-breaker Amundsen which we met sailing a few days ago sent us a foto of the ice in the Larsen channel today (uploaded to blog). Every day, the Canadian government publishes an ice report with data extracted from satellite images, which we download via our Iridium satellite data connection.

Attached you'll see an image of the ice situation and a suggested route produced by local experts.

This year there are 14 boats attempting the passage from East – West and 11 going the opposite way like us. The 14 boats still in Greenland may not be able to pass. They have until the end of august before it becomes too risky. Apart from the difficult weather conditions after that, the probability of the ice freezing up before completing the 3000 miles to Nome, AK becomes high.

The fact that we have arrived so far, so quickly has given us a great advantage. We're in a perfect position ready to make the most of the next southerlies and sail 200 Miles to the Larsen and Peel straits. We're lucky that Plum is a large, fast boat as when the ice opens up, it can close up again very quickly.

Today in Taloyoak we met Conservation Officer David Anavilok, head of the local WWF branch.

The mere thousand inhabitants of Taloyoak live off the land; hunting and fishing. As nothing can grow in the Tundra, whale and animal fat and skin provide all the vitamins needed to survive; in fact these contain more Vitamin C than oranges! Every year the Conservation Officer hands out counted tokens for hunting and fishing.

La carta dei ghiacci al 14 agosto In marzo e aprile, in team di 2/3 persone partono con le motoslitte in condizioni estreme: temperature che arrivano fino a -40° C, poche ore di luce, orsi polari in agguato. Cacciano balene, beluga, trichechi, narvali e orsi polari. Tutta la carne e il grasso vengono condivisi con la comunità e le varie pelli vendute con i permessi delle autorità e sotto strettissimo controllo. Proprio questa cultura ed etica nella caccia e pesca è ciò che ha permesso agli Inuit di sopravvivere nei secoli in queste condizioni estreme.

Quando chiediamo al cacciatore Johnny come sopravvivono ai freddi artici nelle battute di caccia e pesca lui risponde: “Basta trovare una foca, la uccidiamo e mangiamo il fegato caldo pieno di sangue: cosi ci riscaldiamo e possiamo sopravvivere”.

Possiamo toccare con mano che al 70° parallelo l'uomo non è il predatore più forte e che la natura è cosi forte da essere temuta e rispettata. Proviamo grande rispetto per queste popolazioni che vivono qui da secoli. David, la guida del Conservation Office/ WWF locale, ci dice che siamo la prima barca in 3 anni ad ancorare nella baia… e ad aver portato 8 beluga che ci hanno seguito da Gjoa Haven nella baia! Segno di buona fortuna…Speriamo!

Partiti alle 10 da Taloyoak, dopo otto ore di navigazione giungiamo a Josephine Bay, la nostra ultima postazione di avanguardia ad attendere il momento propizio. Abbiamo ancorato alla foce del fiume Garry, in un posto riparato da correnti e vento. È sera ormai a bordo di Kamana e il sole, quella presenza costante sopra le nostre teste, sembra aver incendiato il cielo attorno a sé.

Mi piace stare seduto per qualche minuto nel tepore della dinette quando tutti sono a letto, ad ascoltare quei piccoli rumori e suoni della barca che la fanno sembrare viva, impregnata come ogni barca di storie e ricordi da raccontare.

Nell'ambiente illuminato dalla luce di iPad e plotter, il mio sguardo si posa sulla carta nautica, ben stesa davanti a me, accanto ai portolani impilati a lato del carteggio.

Il pensiero corre veloce ed inarrestabile indietro nel tempo, centinaia di anni fa, si spinge a bordo di quelle barche che per prime hanno provato a passare di qua. Senza strumenti, senza mappe, ma soprattutto senza sapere cosa ci fosse, cosa li attendesse il miglio seguente, spinti dal solo spirito di avventura e scoperta e con il cuore pieno di speranza.

Ammiro quegli uomini, quegli esploratori che non esistono più, che partivano verso l'ignoto nel solo intento di allargare i confini del mondo fino a quel momento conosciuto. È anche grazie al loro coraggio se Kamana oggi può essere qui, e noi insieme a lei a sperare che la feroce e cruda Natura padrona di queste terre ci permetta di andare avanti nel nostro viaggio.

La carta dei ghiacci al 16 agosto La placca ghiacciata è ancora troppo solida e compatta, più passano i giorni più le possibilità reali che il passaggio si apra diminuiscono. Non ci rimane che imparare da quegli uomini e riempire il cuore di speranza, fiduciosi che ancora una volta la Natura farà la sua parte nel nome di una grande avventura.

Ice Chart August 14 In March and April, teams of 2 to 3 head out on snowmobiles in extreme conditions (wind, temperatures down to -40 degrees, and hungry polar bear looking for) to hunt Whale, Beluga, Walrus, Narwhal and polar bear. Every single part of the animal is used up and shared within the community. The skins are sold but numbers and prices are strictly controlled. This ethic and culture around hunting and fishing is what has permitted the Inuit to survive centuries in such extreme conditions.

When we ask hunter Johnny how they survive the cold when out hunting or fishing, he replies “All you need to do is find a seal, kill it, and eat the liver, warm and full of blood. In this way we warm up and can survive�.

Here at the 70th parallel of latitude , man isn't the top predator, and nature is feared and respected. We, in turn, greatly respect the populations that have lived here for centuries. David tells us that we're the first boat to anchor here in three years, and that we have brought with us 8 Beluga whales! A sign of good luck , we hope!

We reach Josephine Bay after 8 hours of sailing, having departed from Taloyoak at 10am. This is our last shelter where we will wait for the perfect moment to head north.

We're anchored at the mouth of the Garry river, protected from currents and wind. It's now evening and the sun, that constant presence above our heads, seems to have set fire to the sky around it.

I'm enjoying taking a few minutes to sit in the cosy saloon now everybody is in bed, listening to the quiet sounds that make the boat seem alive, alive with stories and memories to be passed on. iPads and chartplotters illuminate the room. My eyes fall on the nautical chart laid out in front of me and nearby, the sailing directions piled up next to the chart table.

Quick and unstoppable thoughts rush backwards in time, to a hundred years ago, when the first boats attempted this passage. They had no instruments, no charts, and most importantly, no idea of what followed, no idea of what danger was waiting for them in the next mile. They did have, however, a deep sense of adventure and discovery, and a heart full of hope.

I admire those men, those explorers that no longer exist, who would head out blindly into distant lands with their only aim being to extend the borders of the known world.

It's also thanks to their courage that today Kamana can be here. We, together with her, hope that the ferocious and crude nature, mother of earth, allows us to continue our voyage.

Ice Chart August 16 Currently the pack ice is still far too solid and compact and we are aware that every day that passes, the probability of being able to continue eastwards decreases.

Our only option is to learn from those explorers and fill our own hearts with hope, trusting that once more nature will do her part to help us in this big adventure.

JOSEPHINE BAY

Un intero giorno a Josephine Bay ci ha dato la possibilità di esplorare via terra. La giornata è partita con un primo giro di perlustrazione, in tender siamo andati alla foce del fiume Garry. Una passeggiata sulle rocce arrotondate ci porta ad incontrare un caribù con delle corna enormi e poi una famiglia con i piccoli che pascolavano tranquillamente a solo cinquanta metri da noi. Un tiro della canna da pesca e si torna a casa con una trota. Pranzo veloce, e via di nuovo.

Una passeggiata lungo un crostone per godere di una vista sorprendente della vallata retrostante ricca di laghi, fiumi, torrenti, pianori verdi, e costellata di rocce muschiate. Difficile dimenticare di essere nella tundra, sopravvivere qui è un impresa per pochi.

I bambini camminano volentieri e anche il piccolo Kai esplora a quattro zampe.

Un musetto bianco spunta, sembra una volpe artica, poi sparisce in una tana, al riparo da tutto il nostro chiasso!

Stanchi, si torna in barca, ma la voglia di esplorare fa si che si resti solo pochi minuti! Davide e Anna ripartono subito per risalire un altro fiume che arriva da Nord. Dopo un'ora, e dopo avvistamenti di anatre bianche, tornano in barca sorridenti e vittoriosi con altre due trote di lago! Ci rendiamo conto come il mondo artico con i suoi vasti e ghiacciati orizzonti, i suoi picchi nudi e rocciosi – tutta questa vasta distesa disabitata che a primo acchito pare di poco interesse per un europeo come noi – agli occhi degli Inuit diventi un mondo animato e pieno di vita.

Nel frattempo a bordo si fanno manutenzione ed i preparativi per una pronta partenza. La nuova carta dei ghiacci non indica un sensibile miglioramento rispetto a ieri, ma contiamo si verifichi domani mentre ci dirigeremo a Nord verso Pasley Bay passando dallo stretto di James Ross. Previsto vento da Est tra 10 e 15 nodi , navigheremo sotto costa in acqua piatta ad occhi aperti per evitare i ghiacci “randagi”.

A whole day in Josephine Bay gave us the chance to explore the land around us. The day started with an initial peak around; a tender ride to the mouth of the river Garry. In a walk up the rounded rocks we meet a caribou with huge antlers, we followed him as he brought us to a plateau with a family, including young ones rummaging around in the grass and moss only fifty meters away from us. A throw of the fishing line, and back home with a trout.

Quick lunch, and off we go again. A walk along a ridge to enjoy a surprisingly beautiful view of the valley's around us, rich with lakes, rivers, streams, green plains, and dotted with mossy rocks. It's barren however, with limited wildlife; we are still in the tundra where only a few species can survive.

The kids are enthusiastic, skipping along, and even the little Kai does some 4legged exploring. A white nose peeps up, maybe an arctic fox, then disappears back into it's underground hole, away from all our noise!

Tired, we head back to the boat, but the desire to explore keeps us from resting for more than a few minutes. Davide and Anna are soon back onshore, walking up another river that comes down from the North. After an hour walking, and spotting white geese, they turn up at the boat with big triumphant smiles and another two trout!

We realize that in the eyes of an Inuit hunter, the arctic world, with its vast, frozen expanses, its barren, snowy peaks and great bare plateaux – all that white lifeless immensity of little interest to an european like us – becomes a living world.

In the meantime, maintenance and the last preparations for departure are carried out onboard. The new ice chart doesn't show any significant improvements compared to yesterday but enough clues to leave us hopeful for a big opening tomorrow as we head north, through the James Ross strait, towards Pasley Bay. Easterlies between 10 and 15 knots are forecast; perfect for coastal sailing in flat seas though we shall keep our eyes open for “stray” bergy bits.

TASMANIA ISLANDS

DRIVEN BY INSTINCT

Il richiamo del ghiaccio ha reso la mia notte praticamente insonne. Nell'attesa che si facessero le 7 per scaricare gli ultimi aggiornamenti dei movimenti della placca che Victor ci manda quotidianamente, non riuscivo a smettere di pensare al passaggio.

Nella mia immaginazione ha ormai assunto le sembianze di un passaggio segreto, un passaggio che possa condurci ad un magico mondo fatto di ghiaccio e dominato da orsi polari dal candido manto.

Ero inquieto. La mia parte razionale mi suggeriva di aspettare, perché un giorno in più poco avrebbe cambiato, la parte istintiva invece mi diceva che era il giorno giusto, che dovevo uscire, salpare l'ancora e andare a realizzare il grande sogno.

Ha vinto l'istinto. Siamo così partiti, prua verso il deserto bianco. Da questo momento in poi la scelta è obbligata: o si passa o si torna indietro.

Nel pomeriggio passo molto tempo al timone, evito i blocchi di ghiaccio che iniziano ad intercettare la nostra rotta, lo sguardo a scandagliare l'orizzonte ogni tanto si posa sul mio bambino che gioca davanti al timone al riparo dal vento. Mi chiedo cosa passi nella sua testa quando guarda con la sua espressione stupita tutto ciò che lo circonda, le onde che ci inseguono, una foca che si immerge in acqua, le vele gonfie di vento. Mi chiedo se in qualche modo una sensazione di questo viaggio rimarrà incisa nel suo cuore nel tempo. Io sono convinto di si', ed e' questo che mi spinge ad andare avanti, sempre oltre.

Last night, I had a hard time sleeping. I stayed up, my mind restless — the ice was cracking and an opening would be ready for us at any moment. And that moment was soon.

By 7am, Victor had sent us the latest updates of the ice charts. The logical and rational side of me told me to wait, one more day wouldn't change anything really. But my instincts were telling me otherwise — today was the day. The ocean and the ice was calling me, and an overwhelming desire filled me from head to toe to continue my journey, to haul anchor and set sail.

And so we did. With Josephine Bay at our shoulders, the sun shone bright at the horizon – illuminating our path towards the white and frozen desert. From now on there is one choice, no hesitation, we either continue straight ahead or turn back. I spent most of the afternoon at the helm, maneuvering Plum past bergy bits of ice which have started to dot the landscape — only the beginnings of what we are to encounter on our passage.

Every now and then, as I scan the ocean around me — my gaze falls upon my child, laughing and playing, sheltered by the biting, frosty wind. I wonder what he must be thinking in his little head when he looks out, eyes wide, at this strange and magical world — a shy seal poking his head out the water, a white tinged iceberg floating dangerously near the boat. I wonder if he will remember this place and this journey when he grows up, if he will recall the feeling of awe and amazement displayed so clearly across his face.

Somewhere deep in my heart I know he will — and this is what keeps me pushing forward.

FALSE STRAIT

Da 31 ore navighiamo in stato di allerta Sono le 12pm Local Time del 19 agosto e siamo momentaneamente ancorati a False Strait in attesa che la marea si abbassi per potere passare Bellot Strait e finalmente ricaricare le batterie a Port Ross.

Siamo partiti alle 5am del 18 agosto lasciandoci Cape Alexander alle spalle. Le cartine dei ghiacci fino alla sera prima ci indicavano un apertura, ma nel frattempo erano nuovamente cambiate per i forti venti e correnti e in navigazione abbiamo constatato che la zona attorno alle Tasmania Islands era pericolosamente infestata da iceberg. Il passaggio che pensavamo di trovare libero si era richiuso ed era ritornato a 7/10 di copertura – in parole povere, il 70% del mare era ghiacciato.

Tenendo presente che Plum – come imbarcazione in sandwich di vetroresina – può navigare in sicurezza al massimo con 3/10 di copertura, capirete come il livello di adrenalina a bordo sia iniziato a montare!

We’ve been on alert for 31 hours Now, the time is 12 pm, 19th of August. The boat is only temporarily anchored at False Strait, waiting for the low tide to then sail through Bellot Strait and settle at Port Ross, where we will recharge our batteries and rest for a while. We departed from Cape Alexander at 5am yesterday, 18th of August. When we checked the ice charts the night before — they looked promising, with a clear and secure opening amongst the ice. However, things made a turn for the worst overnight. When we set out in the morning towards the Tasmania Islands — what we thought would be a safe and easy pass turned out to be a dangerously ice clogged ocean. Strong winds and currents had swept more ice into our route, and we found ourselves to be navigating through waters covered 70% by massive, jagged shaped ice bergs. When actually, a boat like ours can only ideally navigate waters covered 30% by ice. Everyone could feel the adrenalin pumping through the blood in their veins, the atmosphere was thick and suffocating. Fear and panic — these were the emotions we had to keep in control, in moments like these the captain needed everyone 100% concentrated on the task that lay ahead.

La navigazione ha quindi subito un forte rallentamento, siamo andati in media a 2/3 nodi per poter evitare i numerosi ghiacci fino a che ci siamo trovati in un vortice di iceberg che si muovevano alla nostra stessa velocità intorno ad una secca affiorante non riportata sulle carte nautiche. Abbiamo dovuto usare tutta la nostra inventiva per poterne uscire: l'equipaggio al completo era impegnato – bambini inclusi: chi a prua utilizzando il mezzo marinaio per deviare i pezzi di ghiaccio più piccoli, chi imbragato sulla terza crocetta a controllare la situazione dall'alto, chi alla dritta e alla sinistra del Plum con in mano un parabordo per tentare di attutire l'impatto degli iceberg sulla fiancata, chi al timone a mantenere la rotta e proteggere il timone dai colpi dei ghiacci che si infilavano sotto, ed infine chi sul tender cercando di agganciare e tirare con i chiodi da ghiaccio gli iceberg più ostici o con una nuova tecnica inventata da Mafio – ribattezzato “montatore di ghiaccio” – salendo con tutto il tender sull' iceberg tenendo soltanto la gamba del motore in acqua ed effettivamente diventato un iceberg a motore! Anche i più piccoli aiutavano correndo da un lato all'altro portando cime, cannocchiali, guanti, parabordi a chi di dovere. Dovevamo uscire dalla zona dei 7/10 velocemente prima del calare della notte che, seppure in questo periodo sia ancora molto breve, riduce la visibilità notevolmente per almeno 4 ore.

Therefore as we neared towards the ice, the boat had to slow down and we ended up traveling at a speed of 2 or 3 mph. We were literally sailing through an infinite labyrinth of fast moving ice bergs, with the centre of the labyrinth being a dangerously large wash — unidentified on our nautical charts. How to escape?

Teamwork. Everyone onboard had something to do: Cami standing at the bow and pushing away any nearby ice pack with the boat hook, Davide harnessed to the third spreader and surveying the sea and ice below, the captain at the helm — maneuvering and steering the boat away from danger, Anna and Giulia positioned on the right and left of the boat — protecting the sides with fenders and lastly, Mafio on the dinghy, herding the largest and heaviest icebergs out of Plum's way. We could effectively call him “the ice berg shepherd”. Even the kids were out on deck, running around from one end of the boat to the other, carrying binoculars, lines, gloves and fenders to anyone who needed them. We had to get out of the 7tenths concentration zone quickly before sunset. Despite the nights still being short due to the time of year, we already have 4 hours of poor light.

BAY BEFORE BELLOT STRAIT Finalmente abbiamo trovato un passaggio che ci ha fatto riprendere la nostra rotta diretta verso Nord, grazie anche al nostro fido drone che nei momenti di stallo ci dava una visuale più ad ampio raggio sullo stato di copertura ghiacci davanti a noi volando a 500 metri di altitudine.

A mezzanotte abbiamo infine deciso di dare àncora in una piccola baia che pareva al sicuro da correnti e ghiacci prima di fare la tirata finale verso lo Stretto di Bellot. È stata una benedizione che abbiamo potuto riscaldare i nostri corpi raffreddati ed esausti con un pasto caldo e una profonda dormita. Purtroppo solo per poco: alle 2.30am siamo tutti balzati in piedi fuori dalle nostre brande e ci siamo ritrovati in coperta semivestiti, ancora in fase REM ed increduli di fronte alla singolare situazione creatasi.

Un iceberg di dimensioni 3 volte il Plum e della massa di circa 600 tonnellate era stato spinto da una forte corrente e da un teso vento contrario imprigionando la nostra catena, spingendo così la barca in senso opposto. Abbiamo dato immediatamente catena all'ancora perché la tensione si allentasse e nel frattempo abbiamo calato il tender e cercato di agganciare l'iceberg tirando e spingendo per rimuoverlo dalla catena. Nulla di fatto: tutti i nostri sforzi erano vani perché avevamo la corrente contro e la catena, scavato ormai un solco all'interno del ghiaccio, non dava cenno di disincastrarsi. Dopo due ore e mezzo passate in inutili ed estenuanti tentativi a temperature sotto zero, abbiamo preso la decisione di mollare l'ancora, assicurando la catena a due parabordi per poterla in seguito recuperare.

Finalmente liberi dal ghiaccio incombente, siamo riusciti a poco a poco e recuperare parabordi, catena ed infine ancora. Ormai svegli ed adrenalinici abbiamo a questo punto deciso di riprendere la navigazione verso il sicuro ancoraggio di False Strait in concomitanza con l'imbocco dello Stretto di Bellot, dove avremmo potuto riposare qualche ora prima del passaggio.

L'equipaggio sfinito alle 9am è caduto in un sonno profondo e rigenerativo: pronti 4 ore dopo per una colazione a base di pasta all'amatriciana!

We finally found a passage through the ice to bring us back onto our track. In moments of total stillness, it was only the drone who could fly to 500m in altitude and provide a large scale birds' eye view of the ice situation ahead.

Tired from the unexpectedly long sail, at midnight we reached a suitable anchorage, apparently safe from tidal streams and ice. Here we were going to spend the night to break up the voyage to the Bellot Strait. It was a blessing to be able to head indoors and warm up our shivering, exhausted bodies with a warm soup and a deep sleep. Unfortunately, it didn't last too long; at 0230 LT we all burst out of bed and onto the deck in unison, clothed with whatever could be grabbed along the way, and let our jaws drop in front of the situation that had quickly developed around us.

An iceberg 3 times the size of Plum, with an estimated mass of around 600 tonnes, had been swept towards us by an odd tidal stream around the coast, and had got stuck on our anchor chain. The force pulling the boat was immense and our only option was to release the capstan and let the ice engulf as much chain as it wanted. In the meantime, the tender was lowered and we tried to push, pull, break, hook the ice in all ways. But it was of no use: the ice piece was too large and the chain too wrapped up inside it. After two and a half hours of hard work, in a chilly morning air, and with no time to worry about wet hands, feet or splashes, we decided to release the anchor chain from the boat so it could pass under the ice and we could pick it up on the other side.

Finally free from the ice, we could start work on collecting the anchor and all related equipment to make sure we could find it. Looking out into the sea from the bay it was clear the ice concentration had increased. To avoid any further risks of getting stuck we decided to head north immediately. 4 hours of sailing took us to False Strait, a safe anchorage where we had another two hours of rest before the tide turned East and we could head into the Bellot Straight.

The knackered crew fell into a deep, regenerative sleep and woke up after 4 hours ready for a “Pasta all'amatriciana� for breakfast!

TOWARDS FORT ROSS

Nonostante siano già sei anni che navighiamo intorno al mondo, mai come l'altro ieri avevo percepito la potenza della Natura in modo tanto forte. Navigare in mezzo a quel labirinto di iceberg che, con la loro pressione, avrebbero potuto stritolare lo scafo di Plum in pochi minuti, è stata un'esperienza che mi ha molto segnato. In questa zona del mondo si avverte in maniera tangibile la predominanza delle forze naturali su ogni possibile gesto umano, e si capisce che non si può far altro che piegarsi innanzi ad esse. Ieri pomeriggio ho avuto la riprova di ciò navigando nelle turbinose correnti di Bellot Strait, lo stretto di 14 miglia che divide l'Oceano Pacifico dal'Atlantico.

Con corrente a favore di oltre 8 nodi e motore a bassi giri, Plum vola sull'acqua alla velocità di ben 15 nodi! Attorno a noi sfilano grossi pezzi di ghiaccio che navigano letteralmente in acqua creando onde e vortici. Le correnti molto confuse ci trascinano a momenti completamente a sinistra, a momenti decisamente a dritta, e rendono necessari movimenti molto decisi di timone per evitare collisioni con gli iceberg. Vedo la fine dello stretto e, anche se la nostra meta è ancora molto lontana, non riesco a non gioire interiormente… “Oceano Atlantico!” Siamo passati. Da questo momento in poi la morsa dei ghiacci dovrebbe abbandonarci, per lasciare spazio ad acque più facilmente navigabili.

Although we have been sailing round the world for almost six years and seen wonders unknown to the human eye — the other day, whilst navigating the infinite labyrinth of ice, the power and size of nature struck me. Knowing that at any moment, the gigantic, jagged ice bergs could smash the hull of the boat, it was an experience that left me scarred. In this cold and remote part of the world — the forces of nature rule over the way of life, giving us humans no choice other than to obey and respect these forces. Yesterday afternoon I once again experienced this feeling whilst sailing through the turbulent currents of Bellot Strait at an incredible speed of 15 knots — a stretch of water 14 miles long, dividing the Atlantic Ocean from the Pacific.

All around you could see large, turquoise bits of ice slip past us, leaving behind a trail of waves and whirlpools. The currents were strong and unpredictable, suddenly pulling the boat in a completely different direction — therefore the captain's steering had to be firm and precise to avoid crashing into any nearby icebergs. As I look ahead I see the end of the strait and, although I know we still have far to go in the passage, I can't help feeling overjoyed. Finally — we have crossed into the Atlantic. From this moment on the ice should clear away, giving us the chance to navigate safer and calmer waters.

FORT ROSS

Ancoriamo a Fort Ross, posto intriso di fascino.

A terra due piccole costruzioni si stagliano tra l'azzurro degli iceberg arenati e il rosso della terra ferruginosa e brulla, territorio degli orsi polari.

Stamattina prima di salpare scendiamo per visitarle: una di esse è un vero e proprio rifugio per tutti i naviganti che ne abbiano necessità, perfettamente isolata, le pareti a prova di orso, fornita di stufe, carburante, vivande, letti e persino di servizi igienici improvvisati dentro dei barili di latta.

Ma quella che più mi ha colpito delle due è quella ormai abbandonata.

All'interno, attorno ad una stufa completamente arrugginita, due poltroncine e due vecchie tazze di ferro smaltato.

Mi chiedo chi avrà messo piede in questo rifugio, chi si sarà seduto qui e bevuto da quelle tazze, quale grande avventuriero…

Un grande uomo un giorno mi ha detto: “Non andare dove il sentiero ti può portare, vai invece dove il sentiero non c'è ancora e lascia dietro di te una traccia.Solo nel tragitto tra il luogo che ha appena lasciato e quello dove sta andando un esploratore è felice” .

We anchor at Fort Ross, a landscape that takes your breath away.

There are two abandoned and gnarled cabins, standing out amongst the white tipped icebergs and the red, rugged terrain. Polar bear territory.

The next morning, we decide to go explore the land before hauling anchor and continuing our route. During our visit, we find out that one of the cabins is not abandoned but actually a refuge for any cold and hungry sailor passing by. Although a little run down, with claw marks along the door and wallpaper peeling off the walls — the place was very cozy and well furnished; with plenty of beds as well as a wood stove, tea mugs, books, a map and even a makeshift toilet. Not to mention the large supply of tinned food, coffee and bottled water.

Yet when we walked into the second, smaller and battered cabin — I was left speechless. It had been long abandoned and any trace of life had completely vanished. As I stepped into the main room, with bits of broken glass scattered on the floor — I felt like I was walking into the past, and into a stranger's life. At the centre lay a rusted stove, facing two small armchairs with springs poking out at all angles and two, stained metal mugs. I imagined what it would be like, to sit by that fire on a quiet, frosty afternoon, sipping some warm tea from those mugs. A shelter for those explorers lost in the middle of nowhere.

A great man once told me: “Do not follow the path that lays ahead, but create a new one and leave your footprints behind. The journey that takes an explorer from the place he has left behind to the one he is traveling to is the journey that makes him most happy”

“Ogni volta che metto piede su Kamana mi rendo conto di come l'oceano possa assumere tante forme diverse. È come se il mare avesse il suo guardaroba personale e, a seconda della situazione, potesse indossare l'una o l'altra veste e cambiare aspetto.

Ieri sono stata così fortunata nel poter essere assistere ad uno di questi magici momenti. Sono uscita dal tepore della mia calda e confortevole cabina, sono salita in coperta e appena ho guardato il mare mi si è fermato il cuore in gola.

Intorno a me solo silenzio e tranquillità. Un paradiso.

Ma poi ho realizzato che il mare rispecchiava il cielo in una perfetta sfumatura di inchiostro lilla che si allungava sull'orizzonte infinito.

L'oceano era così liscio che sembrava seta: non un'increspatura, non un accenno di onda. In lontananza, spruzzi bianchi marcavano il mare, o il cielo. A questo punto non ero più' sicura di distinguerli l'uno dall'altro. Temevo che un solo respiro potesse rovinare quel momento, rompendo l'illusione. Lo schiamazzo della risata di Kai mi ha riportata alla realtà e mi ha fatto sorridere. È incredibile come un così piccolo momento possa rendere una persona così felice, la risata di un bambino, l'immobilità del mare, il tepore del sole.

Tutto ciò ti fa apprezzare queste piccole semplici cose, e questo è una delle cose che amo di più quando navigo a bordo di Kamana”.

“Ieri mattina il capitano ha posato lo sguardo su un grande iceberg che si era arenato verso riva. Tutto l'equipaggio si è catapultato sul tender e ha raggiunto l'iceberg. Andavamo a tutta velocità', al punto che il freddo ci pungeva la pelle come mille aghi di ghiaccio. L'iceberg di per se era desolato e senza anima, la sua tristezza ci toccava nel profondo.

Lenti ma sicuri siamo riusciti ad abbordare l'iceberg salendovi a carponi con cautela. Ogni mio passo mi toglieva il fiato in quanto potevo sentire il ghiaccio scricchiolare sotto i miei stivali. Ma questo iceberg era differente: un fiume azzurro intenso gli passava in mezzo. Mio padre stava per distendere la bandiera italiana sull'altro estremo dell'enorme massa di ghiaccio. Abbiamo tutti trattenuto il fiato nel momento in cui ha saltato il fiumiciattolo. E prima che ce ne rendessimo conto, l'intera isola di ghiaccio era stata conquistata”.

Everytime I have set foot on Kamana — I have seen the ocean take different forms. It's as if the sea has it's own secret wardrobe, and when it feels like it — it pulls out one of it's beautiful gowns and puts it on display. The other day, I was lucky enough to witness one of these moments. As I stepped out of the warmth and safety of my cabin and looked out at sea my heart got stuck in my throat. All around me was stillness and silence. For a second it felt like we were flying, floating in the sky. A dreamland. A paradise. But then I realized, the sea was mirroring the sky — one perfect, inky shade of lilac stretched across the infinte horizon.The ocean was so smooth it looked like silk, not one crease, not one wisp of a wave. In the distance, splashes of white dotted the sea — or the sky, at this point I wasn't quite sure which was which. I was scared that a single breath would ruin the moment — rip apart the illusion. The burst of Kai's laughter brought me back to reality, and I smiled. Funny how such simple things can make a person so happy – the laughter of a child, the stillness of the sea, the fuzzy warmth of the sun. It makes you appreciate these small, simple things — and that is one of the beauties I love about sailing with Kamana.

Yesterday morning the captain caught sight of an iceberg, shipwrecked by the shore. The entire crew raced to the dingy and blasted towards the iceberg. We were going so fast that the frost was biting into our skin, almost as if it wanted to eat us.

The iceberg itself was desolate and souless, its sadness reaching out and consuming us. Slowly but surely everyone on the dingy crawled on top of the enormous iceberg. Every step i took was breathtaking as i could hear the soft crunch under my boot.

However this iceberg was different, it had a small river passing through the middle of it. My father was to lay the Italian flag on the other end of the giant mass of ice. We watched in horror as he jumped to the other end and place the flag on the snow.

Before we even knew it, the entire island of ice was conquered.

“La vita a bordo di Kamana per noi bambini è sempre emozionante.

Durante la navigazione dobbiamo tutti aiutare: ci siamo organizzati a gruppi di due per lavare i piatti a pranzo e cena, apparecchiare e tenere ordinata e pulita la nostra cabina. Inoltre dobbiamo fare tute le mattine i nostri compiti e quando abbiamo finito possiamo leggere un libro, guardare un film o cantare assieme accompagnati dall'ukulele (questo è ciò che più' mi diverte visto che da settembre ho iniziato le lezioni di chitarra).

C'è sempre qualcosa da fare in barca ed una delle mie preferite è assaggiare le deliziose invenzioni culinarie di Giulia – il nostro chef di bordo! Adoro anche guardare fuori dalla finestra la vista mozzafiato degli immensi iceberg galleggiare nelle acque ghiacciate di questo viaggio”.

“Oggi abbiamo avuto un incontro molto speciale! Stavamo tranquillamente guardando un film quando improvvisamente abbiamo sentito il capitano gridare: “tutti fuori!” Siamo tutti usciti ed abbiamo visto un grande, giovane orso polare femmina seduto sopra un iceberg galleggiante. E' stato molto emozionante perché ho avuto un po' di paura ma allo stesso tempo l'ho trovato tenero! Il mio momento preferito di questo viaggio è stato quando ci siamo trovati in mezzo a tantissimi iceberg ed abbiamo dovuto aprirci una via libera spingendo e spostando i grandi pezzi di ghiaccio col tender…era cosi divertente!”

Life on board of Kamana is always exciting for us kids.

Throughout the navigation we are all involved in chores, like washing plates, setting the table and cleaning up our cabins. When we wash the plates we take turns in two, to wash at lunch and then at dinner. Another important chore we have is finishing our homework and when we do, we usually read, watch a movie or play and sing with the ukulele (i especially enjoy playing the ukulele since I've started to play the guitar).There's always something to do on the boat and one of my favorite is tasting delicious cakes and meals cooked from the best chef on board… Giulia Tettamanti! I also love looking out of the window at the breath taking view of the giant ice bergs sitting on the freezing water.

Today we had the most amazing encounter.

We were calmly watching a movie when suddenly, we heart the captain shout. We went outside and we saw a big, young, snowy, female polar bear sitting on a floating iceberg. It was both fearsome and SUPER cute!! My favourite part of the holiday was when we completely crushed the ice trough and made a path. It was so exciting!

Qualche anno fa ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare uno dei più grandi velisti e marinai della storia contemporanea. Mi disse: “La vita è una regata dal tempo indeterminato, della quale non decidiamo la partenza, durante il percorso solo le nostre valutazioni e conseguenti decisioni saranno la chiave del risultato”.

Sto facendo la regata più singolare che mi sia mai capitata, la partenza è andata molto bene, sia le scelte dei bordi che le “boe“ del percorso sono state girate con saggezza e senza particolari sbavature. Le istruzioni di regata riportavano vari “gates” delimitati da freddi galleggianti di colore bianco di varia forma e grandezza non ancorati e di non definita posizione. Nessuna disposizione particolare, tutte le boe possono essere lasciate a dritta oppure a sinistra a seconda della convenienza, qualcuna può anche essere toccata o spinta con delicatezza, qualche boa fa da atollo alle foche che si godono il tepore della breve estate, altre fungono da avamposto di caccia per gli orsi polari che hanno optato per il mare aperto. Dal punto di vista di uno sciatore potrebbe sembrare una gara mista, lo slalom passa da speciale a gigante o da libera a Super G in poche miglia, continui i cambi di ritmo, il percorso è disegnato dalla Natura che a volte lascia l'orizzonte completamente libero, a volte fa scendere un sipario di nebbia impenetrabile .

Dalla testa d'albero spesso il panorama è un ingarbugliato labirinto, mentre dalla coperta non ci si stanca mai di guardare tutto questo ghiaccio: ogni singolo pezzo è scolpito con maestria e dipinto di colori brillanti, ad ognuno di essi è attribuibile una figura nota.

La forma che emerge non ha nulla a che vedere con quella immersa, che è spesso più voluminosa e spigolosa.

Navigando nel Lancaster Sound incontriamo i primi iceberg (grandi e alte masse di ghiaccio che si staccano dai ghiacciai), il ghiaccio che ci ha fatto strada sino ad ora nel Pacifico era infatti mare ghiacciato chiamato “pack”.

Many years ago I was lucky enough to meet one of the greatest sailors and seafarers of modern history. He said to me: “life is a never-ending regatta with no start line. Along the course, only our thoughts and consequent decisions will determine the results” . The start went very well. Both the points of sail and the buoys were planned wisely with no errors.

The instructions gave various gates, posted by white, floating objects of varying size and shape. They are not anchored and their position is not defined. There were no particular indications regarding what side to leave the buoys on, and lax rules on touching them or even pushing them slightly. A few of the buoys are deck chairs for the seals, walrus and sealions, enjoying the short-lived summer temperatures; others are the home base for hunting polar bear.

From the skier's point of view, it could be compared to a rather confused race.

Continuous changes of the rhythm. The course drawn up by nature, who sometimes leaves the horizon completely free from hazards, and other times, curtains the world around us with an impenetrable fog.

From the top of the mast, the panorama is a labyrinth, while from below every single piece is a distinct sculpture, created and painted by a master. No-one gets tired of watching it and recognizing the figures within it.

She shaped that we see, are still relatively monotonous compared to the underwater section.

Much more voluminous with jagged and complex shapes.

Navigating in Lancaster Sound we see our first real Icebergs; ice pieces that have come off the land as opposed to sea ice.

Il nostro waypoint si chiama Cuming Inlet, si tratta di un fiordo di oltre 11 miglia creato e lasciatoci libero da un ghiacciaio che ha cesellato le rocce seguendo precisi e geometrici schemi. Dopo mesi di viaggio sono nuovamente senza parole: altro paesaggio magico vicini al 75esimo Nord.

Our next waypoint is at Cuming Inlet, a fjord over 11 miles long, chiseled out by a glacier following precise geometric shapes. After months of travel, I find myself once again speechless in front of another magical landscape close to 75 degrees North.

BAFFIN BAY

BAFFIN BAY 23 Agosto Lasciamo Cuming Inlet approfittando di una “finestrella” meteo favorevole che avrebbe dovuto portarci in circa 24 ore a Pond Inlet, insediamento Inuit situato a nord est dell'isola di Baffin.

Passiamo poche miglia a Nord di quello che sarebbe dovuto essere il nostro ultimo ancoraggio in acque canadesi prima di attraversare Baffin Bay e scendere in Greenland nella magnifica Disko Bay, al 70esimo Nord.

Ghiacciai a perdita d'occhio, montagne mozzafiato ed ancora molto “ghiaccio di mare” inaspettato .

Qualche gincana fuori programma ci fa rallentare, all'ingresso di Navy Board Inlet i venti da nord e nord est hanno raggruppato importanti zolle di ghiaccio che la corrente contraria tiene compatti a fare da sbarramento.

La temperatura dell'acqua poco al di sopra di 1 grado celsius, gli esperti ci dicono che è un anno molto freddo rispetto alla media, è dal 2004 che non si vede una tale e prolungata concentrazione di ghiacci ed il mare sta già ricongelandosi con settimane di anticipo.

Sempre fieri e contenti della nostra avventura a bordo, tutto fila liscio: i bambini fanno i compiti con qualunque mare, come niente fosse mentre gli adulti si occupano delle quotidiane faccende “domestiche”. Chi fa un po' di manutenzione, altri leggono un libro o godono del maestoso disabitato paesaggio.

La tensione dei giorni scorsi si è giustamente placata, lasciando spazio ad un livello di guardia nella norma di una navigazione con meno insidie. Ciononostante il nostro pensiero è sempre rivolto a coloro che stanno facendo la nostra rotta con giorni di ritardo e con barche meno performanti.

Sono 8 le imbarcazioni a noi ben note che stanno tentando il passaggio da ovest a est, con i loro variopinti equipaggi abbiamo passato una bella serata a Nome prima di partire, ci siamo scambiati i contatti e come buoni marinai ci si aiuta sempre. Grazie alla tecnologia ed al nostro vantaggio temporale siamo riusciti a dar loro informazioni importanti.

Solamente 2 di loro sono ancora bloccati dal ghiaccio poche miglia a nord di Tasmania Islands, gli altri sono passati tutti dal mitico Bellot Strait , il punto geografico che per convenzione divide l'Oceano Pacifico da quello Atlantico. August 23 We leave Cuming Inlet making the most of a weather window.

Moderate northerlies should have us anchored at Pond Inlet in 24 hours. This would be our last Canadian stop, an inuit settlement on the east coast of Baffin Island.

We decide however, on the last forecast update, to sail straight passed and head directly to Disko Bay; a magnificent anchorage down at 70degrees North on the Western coast of Greenland.

With more glaciers than we could dream if, breathtaking mountains, and still a few unexpected pieces of sea ice, Eclipse Sound and the surrounding waters are truly a miracle. We find ourselves doing gymkhanas at the entrance to Navy Board Inlet, where northerly winds have squashed all the ice floes down towards the channel.

The water temperature is a tad over one degree. We're informed by local experts that it's particularly cold compared to recent years; the ice concentrations are the greatest they've been since 2004, and there are clues of the sea already starting to freeze over again, a couple of weeks ahead of schedule.

Proud and happy of our adventure, we continue sailing. The kids use the time to do their homework, “it was too wavy” being no excuse, while the adults carry on with daily tasks such as washing clothes, maintenance, reading books and enjoying the deserted landscapes.

The safer waters, and a more reliable autopilot as we head into more southern latitudes, allow for more relaxed watches. Our thoughts turn to the other crews, attempting the same passage as us but with the added challenges of smaller, slower boats. We got to know the 8 crews going in the same direction as us quite well, and a party hosted by a family in Nome the evening before departure was a good opportunity to exchange contact details. Thanks to today's technology we have been able to pass on real time information regarding ice and weather conditions, or any other aids and hazards to navigation.

Two boats are still stuck in ice just North of Tasmania Islands while the rest are now through the Bellot Strait. By convention, this is where the Pacific Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean, and mariners are relieved to have “made it” by the time they arrive there. However, the reality is that more challenges lie ahead and trip is not over.

Our fingers are crossed for Susanne, a tenacious and very expert german woman who is sailing single-handed in her self-built, 40 foot aluminium boat, and Yvan, a single-handed frenchman attempting the passage on a lightweight 20 foot catamaran with no cabin or engine.

Yvan's challenge is particularly risky; the slightest error or mishap could very quickly become an emergency; a situation to be avoided at all costs in freezing water and so far from any SAR bases. Anchored near us in Taloyoak, we could almost feel his exhaustion and the cold that had penetrated his bones. He'd heavily paid for any small mistake, and had also lived through some very unlucky events.

25 Agosto Sono 72 ore che navighiamo senza sosta e senza terra ferma in vista..

Stiamo attraversando la baia di Baffin, il tratto di mare artico che separa l'Isola di Baffin dalla Groenlandia.

3 giorni con 25 nodi di vento in poppa e onde che ci fanno beccheggiare e rollare ritmicamente: turni di navigazione ogni 2 ore, pranzi e cene ridotte al minimo, qualche film, libro e pennica rubata qua e là. Si perde facilmente la dimensione del tempo: è notte? È giorno? E quella dello spazio: non vedere terre di riferimento all'orizzonte ci rende sempre più dipendenti dalla nostra strumentazione di bordo per renderci conto del tempo e del tragitto percorso.

Anche i ghiacci si sono sempre più rarefatti, ormai si incrocia soltanto qualche solitario e immenso iceberg: monumentali cattedrali nel deserto che contano 20.000 anni sulle spalle e che impiegano circa 5/7 anni a sciogliersi completamente. “Proprio come quello che ha affondato il Titanic”, ci ricordano i bambini!

Abbiamo ricevuto le ultime notizie dai naviganti dietro di noi e le imbarcazioni ora bloccate dai ghiacci intorno alle isole Tasmania sono quattro. La situazione dei ghiacci ha avuto un ulteriore peggioramento ed in alcuni tratti è ritornata a 9/10 di copertura! Ci chiediamo se ce la faranno, le speranze per loro si abbassano ogni giorno che passa. Noi invece ci sentiamo come allo sprint finale, sappiamo che il peggio è passato, ma dobbiamo mettere assieme ancora gli ultimi sforzi per concludere questa incredibile avventura. Il nostro plotter ci mostra ancora 180 miglia da coprire prima di arrivare a destinazione e anche se le riserve di cambusa stanno terminando, il carburante calcolato giusto-giusto, e le energie a bordo sono tirate, lo spirito di Plum è sempre positivo: ce la faremo!

August 25 We've now been sailing for 72 hours with no land in sight. We're crossing Baffin Bay, the stretch of ocean between Baffin Island, Canada, and Greenland.

3 days of 25 knots from our stern have brought considerable waves and rhythmical rolling and pitching. We run 2 hour watches, our lunches and dinners are simplified and the saloon is continuously transformed from dining area, to cinema, to reading room. Everybody gladly naps when possible and the dimension of time becomes irrelevant.

As does that of space; with no land in sight we rely on our onboard instruments to have any idea of time passed and distance to go. Sighting icebergs is steadily becoming a rarer occurrence, though they are of monumental sizes. These have come off glaciers that could be around 20,000 years old, and it will take between 5 to 7 years for them to melt completely. “Just like the one that sank the titanic!” the children remind us.

News has reached us from the other crews. All four boats who had not got through Bellot Strait are now grouped together stuck in the ice around Tasmania Islands. The coverage is back to 9 tenths and the weather not kind. All our thoughts and blessings go to them.

For us, this is the final sprint. We know the worst is over but we've got to use our strength to conclude this incredible adventure. 180 NM to our waypoint in Greenland and even though our fridge is asking to be filled, our diesel tanks are thirsty, and the energy onboard is being stretched out to it's maximum, morale is always high – we can do it!

Il mio orologio segna le 20,00, quello del cellulare le 23,00, quello di bordo un altro orario ancora. Effettivamente, non ho idea di che ore siano, il sole è ancora abbastanza alto da farmi credere che sia giorno, la fame e la stanchezza mi suggeriscono altro. Mi siedo in pozzetto, solo un attimo, per assaporare il silenzio e la calma.

Leggo sull'iPad una mail ricevuta ancora prima dell'ingresso in porto. È Victor, il guru della nostra spedizione, che ci fa le congratulazioni per il nostro arrivo, consacrandoci la barca più veloce ad aver concluso il passaggio e specificandoci che il passaggio stesso si ritiene concluso quando si passa dal mare di Bering alla fine del Lancaster Sound (e non, come credevamo anche noi, da circolo polare a circolo polare). È fatta, ce l'abbiamo fatta.

Saturday night Plum enters Aasiaat Harbour, the crew from a russian arctic fishing boat catch our lines and I put the engine to rest.

My watch tells me it's 20.00 though my phone says 23.00 and the boat clock, yet another time.

It reflects my body's confusion; the sun is still high enough in the sky for me to believe it's day, but hunger and tiredness suggest otherwise.

I sit down in the cockpit. A moment to myself to take in the calm and the silence.

I pick up my iPad to read an email received just before entering the marina. It's Victor, the guru of our expedition, congratulating us on our arrival. He confirms we're the fastest boat and specifies that the passage officially goes from the Bering Sea to the end of Lancaster sound, not from arctic circle to arctic circle as we had thought.

It's done. We've made it.

AASIAAT GREENLAND Quindi il Passaggio a Nordovest non è più un progetto, non è più un sogno su cui fantasticare: è realtà, è già esperienza.

Ed è in questo momento, in cui posso permettermi di pensare solo a me stesso, che sento le emozioni di mesi di navigazione sommarsi le une alle altre e travolgermi in un'unica ondata. Improvvisamente inizio a realizzare i posti, le persone, risento la tensione dei momenti di difficoltà e di rischio, mi sento addosso la fatica, ma anche la soddisfazione di aver seguito nei momenti giusti il mio istinto. Ripercorro il viaggio con la mente e mi sento… semplicemente felice.

Molte persone mi chiedono cosa mi abbia spinto ad intraprendere quest'impresa così rischiosa ed imprevedibile con le persone a me più care a bordo. Sono fermamente convinto che l'aver potuto condividere un viaggio del genere con chi amo al mio fianco sia l'aspetto che più renderà, nel mio cuore, quest'esperienza unica ed indimenticabile. Tuttavia, non sentendomi ancora sufficientemente pronto a rispondere a questa domanda, credo non mi rimanga che lasciare galoppare il desiderio di scoperta, e sperare di trovare la risposta nel prossimo viaggio…

Now the northwest passage is no longer a project, no longer a dream: it's reality, it can be considered experience. And it's in this moment, in which I can allow my mind to think of myself only, that all the emotions of the last few months pick me up and turn me over in a single, huge wave.

Suddenly I start to realise where we have been and the people we have met. I can feel the tension of the more difficult or risky times, and I can feel the fatigue, mixed with he satisfaction of having followed my instincts.

I run through the trip in my mind again and I feel… simply happy.

Many people ask me what pushed me to attempt this risky, unpredictable undertaking with the people who I most care about on board. I'm convinced that having shared such a trip with those I love by my side is the single thing that, in my heart, renders this experience so unique and unforgettable.

However, I still don't feel completely ready to answer the question. I believe the way forward is to allow my desire to discover to continue to gallop, and hope to find the answer in my next journey.

Surprised? Shouldn't be. In the good old days the definition of the NWP was reaching Lancaster Sound or Pond Inlet from the east end to Bering Strait at the west end.

Somebody from Scott Polar Research Institute redefined the NWP; from the Arctic Circle to the Arctic Circle (although he probably had no idea where those two are) and I disagree with it.

Sir John Franklin will agree with me. Now its time to celebrate !!!

Io non avevo sottostimato questa avventura ma non posso negare di aver pensato inizialmente che sarebbe più semplice. Avevo programmato tutte le possibili opzioni qualora non fossimo riusciti a passare, ma nei grandi momenti di tensione, quando pensavo appunto di non farcela, il mio stato d'animo è stato messo a dura prova.

Per fortuna dopo pochi minuti ho riconquistato la lucidità e la freddezza che fortunatamente mi accompagnano nei momenti più difficili, e sono state determinanti. Ho capito infatti che dovevamo forzare la mano proprio in quel momento, andando contro le previsioni e i consigli, anche dei più esperti. Certo con il senno di poi è sempre facile capire di aver fatto la scelta giusta o completamente sbagliata, ma anche quella volta seguire l'istinto è stata la chiave per superare le difficoltà (ovviamente abbinata a una grande preparazione ed a un mezzo super efficiente).

Il fatto di poter seguire l'istinto per superare il momento di difficoltà è un lato affascinate della spedizione, visto che mai come nel passaggio a nord ovest ho avuto la netta prova della totale forza ed imprevedibilità della natura.

While not underestimating the difficulties of this adventure, I cannot deny that, at first, I thought it would be easier. I had envisaged all possible options in the event that we would be unable to pass through, but in the most stressful moments, when I actually thought we wouldn't make it, my spirits were severely tested.

Luckily, after a few minutes, I recovered my clear-headedness and cool which, thankfully, accompany me during the trickiest moments, and this made all the difference. I understood, in fact, that we should risk it, going against forecasts and advice, even that given by the experts. Of course, it is always easy to look back with hindsight to see whether we made the right decision, or the wrong one. It was also at this time that it turned out to be essential to follow our instincts in order to overcome the challenges obviously not forgetting the importance of careful preparation, together with a highly efficient boat.

Following one's instinct when overcoming a challenging moment is a fascinating aspect of the expedition, given that I have never witnessed such strong evidence of nature's force and unpredictability as I have during the Northwest Passage.

Il primo equipaggio italiano a compiere il Passaggio a Nord Ovest, da Ovest a Est. Il Plum ha concluso la sua impresa, arrivando ad Aasiaat in Groenlandia, dopo 33 giorni di dura navigazione e più di 3.500 miglia percorse. È il primo equipaggio italiano a riuscirci, ed è stato anche il più veloce nel 2017.

The first Italian crew to complete the Northwest Passage, from west to east. Plum ended the voyage, arriving in Aasiaat, Greenland, after 33 days of hard sailing and having travelled over 3,500 miles. This is the first Italian crew to have achieved this and it was also the fastest in 2017.

Enrico Tettamanti è un marinaio che viene dalla montagna, da Pomarolo, Trentino Alto Adige. Inizia a navigare a vela da piccolo assieme ai genitori, e da 20 anni è skipper professionista. Ha navigato per più di 220.000 miglia in tutto il mondo, doppiato sette volte Capo Horn e fatto 20 traversate oceaniche, a latitudini diverse. Nel 2002 ha dato vita al suo primo progetto Kamana (su un bellissimo Cigale 16), “la vela estrema alla portata di tutti”, andando a navigare nelle zone più remote del pianeta.

Da allora Kamana Sailing Expedition (nel 2011 è arrivato Plum, un Solaris 72) è sinonimo di esplorazione e spedizione, cercando di raggiungere i posti dove solo pochi vanno. Dal windsurf all'alpinismo, dalla pesca d'apnea al parapendio, dal kitesurf al freeride ski, usando sempre come base la barca.

Enrico e' sposato con Giulia e insieme navigano a tempo pieno in giro per il mondo dal 2011. All'equipaggio si sono aggiunti i loro due bimbi: Kai, che in hawaiano significa “Oceano”, e Aua, che in lingua Inuit significa “piccolo spirito di Terra”. Kai, in grembo alla sua mamma e una volta nato, ha navigato tutti gli oceani del Mondo, comprese le acque del famoso passaggio a Nordovest, a poco piu' di un anno di vita.

Concepito al termine dell'avventura del passaggio, il fratellino Aua deve il suo nome alla tradizione del popolo Inuit, secondo il quale un Aua e' un piccolo e potente spirito che vive sulle sponde del mare, pronto a guidare e aiutare i navigatori artici.

Tutti insieme sono salpati a bordo di Kamana 3.3, un trimarano innovativo costruito con una particolare attenzione per la gestione e produzione di energie rinnovabili, nell'estate del 2019.

Dal mar Mediterraneo, dopo 6000 miglia di emozioni indimenticabili vissute assieme ai propri bambini, sono arrivati alle Bahamas.

Il nuovo progetto Kamana 3.3 e' quello di raggiungere gli angoli più remoti del Pianeta a livello tropicale e sub tropicale, con l'intento di andare a conoscere le comunità piu' isolate che popolano gli arcipelaghi meno conosciuti.

Un nuova avventura che in primis vuole essere educativa per i loro bimbi e per tutti gli amici che regolarmente li raggiungono per condividere queste esperienze straordinarie.

Enrico Tettamanti is a sailor who comes from the mountains, from Pomarolo, Trentino Alto Adige. He started sailing as a child with his parents and has been a professional skipper for 20 years. He has sailed over 220,000 miles around the world, rounded Cape Horn seven times and made 20 ocean crossings at different latitudes. In 2002 he launched his first project, Kamana (on a beautiful Cigale 16), “extreme sailing within everybody's reach”, travelling to the most remote areas of the planet.

Since then Kamana Sailing Expedition - Plum, the Solaris 72 boat, arrived in 2011 is synonymous with exploration and expedition, venturing to places where only a few people go. An explorer by spirit and profession, Enrico can accompany anyone on one of his many adventures, in complete safety. He is one of the few skippers in the world to have reached all the most important polar destinations: Antarctica, Greenland and Alaska. A great sportsman, he is always ready to share his interests with his guests. From windsurfing to mountaineering, from spearfishing to paragliding, from kitesurfing to freeride skiing - always using the boat as a base.

Enrico is married to Giulia and together they have been sailing around the world full time since 2011. Later their two children joined the crew: Kai, meaning “ocean” in Hawaiian, and Aua, meaning “little spirit of the Earth” in Inuit. Kai, from when he was in the womb and, then, soon after he was born, has sailed all world's oceans, including the famous Northwest Passage. Conceived at the end of this adventure, his little brother Aua owes his name to Inuit traditions - Aua is a small, powerful spirit living on the sea shore who guides and helps Arctic navigators.

In the summer of 2019, they all sailed on Kamana 3.3, an innovative trimaran built with the production and management of renewable energy in mind.

From the Mediterranean Sea, after 6,000 miles of unforgettable experiences shared with their children, they arrived in the Bahamas.

The aim of the new Kamana 3.3 is to reach the remotest corners of the Planet at tropical and sub-tropical latitudes, in order to get to know the most isolated communities populating these lesser known archipelagos.

A new adventure that, first and foremost, would like to be an educational journey for their children and all the friends who regularly join them to share such extraordinary experiences.

Rarahil Memorial School

Nata nel 1998, Fondazione Senza Frontiere – ONLUS promuove progetti di aiuto e di evoluzione autogestita in paesi in via di sviluppo economico. Tra questi, il progetto “Rarahil” a Kirtipur, una cittadina non lontana da Kathmandu, la capitale del Nepal.

The foundation “Senza Frontiere” – ONLUS supports aid and selfdevelopment projects in developing countries, like the “Rarahil” project in Kirtipur, a small village not far from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal.

The school was conceived and devoloped thanks to the inventiveness of Fausto De Stefani , mountaineer and naturalist. It hosts approximately one thousand children from 4 to 18 years of age.

Il primo equipaggio italiano a compiere il Passaggio a Nord Ovest, da Ovest a Est. Il Plum ha concluso la sua impresa, arrivando ad Aasiaat in Groenlandia, dopo 33 giorni di dura navigazione e più di 3.500 miglia percorse. È il primo equipaggio italiano a riuscirci, ed è stato anche il più veloce nel 2017.

Aasiaat, 28 agosto “La sensazione più strana durante questi giorni? Navigare e sentirsi sul tetto del mondo. È stata una lunga apnea tra una parte del pianeta terra all'altra, passando attraverso un mare spaziale fatto di ghiaccio…”

Con Enrico c'erano su moglie Giulia, il piccolo Kai, di un anno e mezzo, e i compagni di avventura Davide ed Anna Serra con i quattro figli Sofia, Tommaso, Anita e Filippo tra gli otto e 14 anni.

The first Italian crew to complete the Northwest Passage, from west to east. Plum ended the voyage, arriving in Aasiaat, Greenland, after 33 days of hard sailing and having travelled over 3,500 miles. This is the first Italian crew to have achieved this and it was also the fastest in 2017.
