FLU SEASON WHAT IS INFLUENZA(FLU)?

INFLUENZA SPREAD

The influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs.

Most experts believe that the flu virus is transmitted primarily through droplets produced when people cough, sneeze, or talk.

HOW DOES IT BEGIN? In the beginning the flu may seem like a cold with nose drips , sneezing and sore throat.

In general the flu can slowly develop…

HIGHEST SEASON OF INFLUENZA Flu viruses spread throughout the entire year, but reach its peak level between Autumn and Winter.

TREATMENT Approximately 35 million Americans get the flu each year, according to the Department of Health. People can learn how to prevent and manage transmissions and symptoms. For instance, a good meal may help strengthen the immune system.

“We must incorporate foods that are healthy and diverse supplements, which will prepare your body, during the autumn and winter season,” says Holistic nutritionist Beatriz Larrea.

The flu vaccine is one of the most important steps to protect you against the virus, as it helps reduce hospitalization, the burden of cases, and deaths caused by the virus (CDC).

Staying active is therapeutic for your body, especially as you get older.

LIVING WITH GOUT

“I

wake up to have a pill for breakfast and I didn't like that... I told myself: I can't stay here (in bed).

I forced myself to get up, make coffee, and walk around in the apartment, also in the hallway of the building.” Remembered Humberto Nieves who lives with Gout (a type of arthritis that causes pain and swelling in the joints).

At the Beginning Although Gout can limit the patient for a couple of weeks, while the medications do their job, in Nieves’ case when he experienced a first episode, the disease kept him confined at home using a wheelchair.

The Process He has learned to manage his symptoms with the help of doctors and family. Nieves has managed to stay more active and in better health condition. The episodes are more distant and less intense.

Nieves' life story is a testimony of continuous struggle as he tells it. From his early years in Rio Cana, Las Maria, Puerto Rico he learned not to give up in the face of challenges.

Nowadays Nieves has attended the Progreso Latino Senior Citizens program since 2017 where he socializes with others who love spending time in the community. Of his favorite activities in the program he cites: dancing, word searches, bingo. He also enjoys that: “the people are very friendly, they help those who need it.”

MINDFUL BREATHING FOR HEALING

Did you know that simply breathing mindfully several times a day could help you heal symptoms?

started working at Progreso Latino (PL) back in November

2022. I worked previously with nonprofit organizations and was interested in continuing this type of work with the Latino/immigrant community which is what attracted me to PL Through my work here, I have helped the community in ways.

Such as working alongside my colleagues on Salud, Salsa, y Sabor (SaSaSa), a nutrition program that incorporates easy to access foods from food pantries which are easily accessible.

I am also working on a partnerships with Behavioral Health Centers to refer people to mental health services. As a community health worker (CHW), I help families with rent relief and RIDHS applications, among finding resources that fit their situations. I am also a certified application counselor (CAC), so I help people with health insurance enrollment applications and Medicaid renewals.

Working as a CHW, I am able to advocate for the community and that is the biggest takeaway for me throughout this

VIVIENDO CON LA GOTA

“M

e levantaba a desayunar pastillas y eso no me gustaba... Yo me decia: no me puedo quedar aqui

(en cama), me obligaba a levantarme, prepararme cafe, a caminar en el apartamento y en el pasillo del edificio.”

Recuerda Humberto Nieves quien vive con Gota (tipo de artritis que causa dolor e hinchazón en las articulaciones)

En principio Si bien la Gota puede limitar al paciente durante un par de semanas mientras los medicamentos hacen su trabajo, en el caso de Nieves cuando experimentó un primer episodio , la enfermedad lo mantuvo recluído en casa utilizando silla de ruedas.

El proceso En la medida que ha ido aprendiendo a manejar sus síntomas con la ayuda de médicos y familiares, Nieves ha logrado mantenerse más activo y en mejores condiciones de salud. Los episodios son más distanciados y menos dolorosos.

La historia de vida de Nieves es un testimonio de lucha continua según él relata. Desde sus primeros años en Rio Cana, Las Maria, Puerto Rico, él aprendió a no darse por vencido ante los retos.

Hoy día Nieves asiste al programa de Adultos Mayores de Progreso Latino desde 2017 donde socializa con otros hispanos que aman pasar tiempo en comunidad.

De sus actividades favoritas del programa cita: bailar, sopas de letra y bingo.

Comencé a trabajar en Progreso Latino en noviembre de 2022. Anteriormente trabajé con organizaciones sin fines de lucro. Seguía interesada en continuar este tipo

de trabajo con la comunidad latina/inmigrante, que es lo que me atrajo a Progreso Latino (PL).

A través de mi trabajo en PL, junto a mis colegas colaboro en Salud, Salsa y Sabor (SaSaSa), un programa de nutrición que incorpora alimentos

de fácil acceso en las despensas de
