Cari lettori,
Dear readers,
The environmental situation in the Czech Republic, the debate on cutting emissions and the position of the government regarding these matters are the starting point of our opening article. On one hand, we have alarming statistics, showing that the level of emissions in this country surpasses more than half the EU average, and, on the other hand, the impossibility of the heavy industry based Czech economy to give up the coal overnight, being a historically fundamental part of its energetic mix. The BabiĹĄ government has recently taken a more proactive position regarding the reduction of green-

house gas supported by Brussels, but the goal of closing the coal-fired power plants remains objectively distant. Nowadays, Czech Republic is dealing with another environmental emergency, namely the invasion of the spruce bark beetle, a coleopter that is literally sweeping the forest heritage of this country, risking transforming the typical Bohemian and Moravian landscapes. Our article aims to summarize the causes that led to this situation, highlighting the destructive mix of climate changes and human errors in environmental management. However, there is also room for positive news, as the recent announcement
that the Ore mountains area â the mountain chain on the border of Czech Republic and Germany â has been included among the UNESCO world heritage sites. The recognition came due to a common submission from the two countries, which symbolizes a new era of relations between Czechs and Germans, contributing to keep away â even more so in these parts â the ghosts of the past. We recommend our reportage on this region, after having visited it on both sides of the border. Convinced that many other topics in our current issue will be of your interest, we wish you

The Prague government reconsiders it but wants reassurances and the help of the big polluters Regarding the production of energy from coal and the reduction of emissions there is no doubt at all, it is not the business of the European Union and the Czech Republic defends above all the interests of citizens and industries that have invested in the country. And after the Czech Republic, along with Poland, Hungary and Estonia, jumping out of the European climate agreement, it seems that now the refrain has been modified, at least in part. A FIGHT FOR THE CLIMATE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC? YES AND NO...
for the transition on climate change? It is too early to say. It is certain, however, that in a few weeks the attitude of the Prague government has shifted from a net ânoâ to the reduction of emissions to a still vague but proactive action plan. Letâs go in order. For the fight against climate change the Czech Republic has
never shone in terms of initiative. It is the fault of a manufacturing industry focused on exports and high productivity, of an energy mix that historically makes coal its main source of production (today 43%), of a fairly dormant popular conscience and apparently, of a lack of attention paid by the public
administration on emission-cutting projects. Moreover, unlike many European countries, where the climate issue and environmental parties have been at the center of the debate even during the last European elections, in the Czech Republic the âgreen waveâ has not broken through, except for that portion of Pirates defending environmental goals. All this in a country like this, where there is talk of a 46% higher level of greenhouse gas emissions per inhabitant compared to the EU average of 28. Another point that has held back the interest in cutting emissions in the country up to now, is linked to coal and nuclear power. Heating, electricity and many other productions are still made with fossil fuel. In 2016, in the Czech Republic the production of greenhouse gases due to industry was 66.5% higher than the EU average. And the main
polluting company in the Czech Republic in 2018 was the PoÄerady coal-fired power plant in the Most district which emitted 5.5 million tons of CO2. Lying in second place in this ranking of the worst, is another plant of the Czech energy company ÄEZ, TuĹĄimice II, in the Chomutov district, with 4.4 million tons of emissions and third is Chvaletice, in the Pardubice region, of the Energy group Sev.en EC, a.s.. This latter power station has asked the regional authorities of central Bohemia for an eightyear exemption, starting from 2021, to disregard the European emission regulations, because cutting would require excessive spending. But according to Greenpeace, who compiled the podium, this exemption would cause pollution leading to the death of several hundred people over 10 years. President MiloĹĄ Zeman also defended the coal, as always appearing to be

According to a team of consultants from the Castle, both the coal and atomic energy must remain at the centre of the national energy mix. A goal confirmed by the governmentâs decision in early July to authorize the construction of other nuclear reactors in the Dukovany and TemelĂn power plants. According to environmentalists, however, the same energy production result could be achieved with alternative sources in 1015 years, with costs six times lower. The energy mix and the price of energy is another one of the points for which in the countries of central and eastern Europe, and therefore also in the Czech Republic, the climate issue does not take hold. In Hungary, for example, the 2014 re-election of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban focused on cutting the consumer price of electricity,

which fell by 3%. And the other governments in the area are also aiming to keep prices lower to guarantee the votes of rural areas and less well off. European families spend on average 4% of their budget on energy, this figure rises to 7% in the Czech Republic. Therefore, introducing higher taxes or

Ue.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister BabiĹĄ has maintained a wavering tone on the subject. A few months ago, he said âthe EU cannot tell us that we must not have nuclear power and cannot talk about our energy mixâ. Then he added, shortly after blocking the agreement on the EUâs zero emissions
target in 2050: âI canât even imagine that there will be no emissions in 2050, we just want a professional debate on more realistic solutions that do not damage the Czech economy, the occupation of our people and the stability of our countryâ. Czech Republic first, as taught, mutatis
Cechia first, come insegna â mutatis mutandis â il presidente americano Donald Trump.
mutandis, by the American president Donald Trump. BabiĹĄ, however, opened a debate underlining that âif we want to save the planet it must be the states that pollute the most that reduce emissions, therefore China, the US and Indiaâ. The Czech Prime minister added in this regard that in 2018 global emissions amounted to 37 billion tons and that the EU quota was 9%, with a reduction of 20 million tons, âwhile in the rest of the world the opposite occurred with a deterioration 51 times higher than the EU reductionâ. Having expressed this precondition and while reiterating that he did well âto say noâ in June to the EU agreement, after the meeting at the end of July with von der Leyen, the Czech Prime minister however, found a small door open: Prague will have to spend
billions to reach the goal of the EU carbon neutrality, with the conversion of its energy mix towards more ecosustainable and clean forms. The Czech government has ideas for achieving this goal, but it always needs the help of the main polluting countries, China, the United States and other developing countries such as India. And the ideas are not delayed. A few days later the announcement arrived, based on the proposal of the Environment Minister Richard Brabec, of the forthcoming institution of a CD. âCoal Commissionâ, which will have the task of developing an exit strategy from this now essential energy source. The task of the Commission will be precisely to coordinate, control the transition and verify the energy mix needed by the country. The gradation is linked to the assumption that the

nibili e pulite.

country cannot pass from one day to the next to an energy without fossil fuels and therefore the quota will decrease little by little, reducing to 1015% in 2040. Meanwhile the mine of BĂlina in northern Bohemia will continue to extract until 2035. The elimination of coal-fired power plants, an objective already achieved by Belgium, Estonia, Iceland, Cyprus, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Switzerland and Norway, is arduous and brings with it the need to increase the
other pillar of the Czech energy mix: nuclear. A plan confirmed by the decision to finance the new reactors, with the choice of suppliers to be made already within the next five years. Strong environmental regurgitations, however, have come from the capital Prague and its Pirate party mayor ZdenÄk HĹib. The city has committed itself to reducing CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030 before reaching neutrality in 2050. The contours of the measures to be taken are still vague, but the mu-

The Czech Republic is therefore preparing to embark on a new path, which is to reduce emissions. A plan that until now had been discarded and that had not had space even in the public debate. A goal that however must be taken into consideration in the contemporary world, but, as BabiĹĄ states, a global effort is required, and the Czech Republic could start to play its small part.

Myopia in economic management and climate change are the main causes of the bark beetle emergency that is affecting the forest heritage

For those traveling by train in the Czech Republic it is increasingly common to see very long freight trains at the stations. An infinite quantity of barked trunks can be seen on the wagons that together form entire woods in a horizontal position. The trains, when
they leave, proceed at a slow pace, like a funeral procession, representing the scourge that is destroying the forests of Bohemia and Moravia. The cause is a xylophagous beetle (which feeds on wood) with a rather poetic name: European spruce bark
beetle (Ips typographus). It is enough to go into the Czech woods, especially in the north and east of the country, to realize the anomalous situation in which they find themselves. It is not difficult to run into spruce trees, which present the typical tunnels dug

by the parasite in the wood under the bark. Needles of the sick plants take on a typical reddish color. Along the paths fallen trunks pile up and in the middle of the forest you often come across clearings left completely bare of trees.
End of forests in the Czech Republic? The small parasite, which mainly affects firs and conifers, is a natural part of the forests. In a healthy ecosystem the Ips typographus helps to dispose of sick or felled trunks, thus facilitating the regeneration of the forest. Healthy
fir trees can cope with the beetle, which sticks to the trunks under the bark, simply by submerging it in resin. The weakened trees on the other hand, succumb by gradually drying up. Since the 1980s, the beetle has repeatedly struck the forests of the Czech Re-

public, attacking plants weakened by environmental and climatic pollution factors, whether acid rain, or, as more recently has been the case, drought. However, the current situation is unparalleled if compared to the past. Between 2015 and 2018, 22.5 million cubic metres of affected trees were knocked down. In the previous emergencies of the Eighties and Nineties the total threshold of eight million cubic metres had never been exceeded. The speed of the emergency is accelerating. Between 2017 and 2018 the volume of trees collapsing due to the beetle, doubled from 6 to 12 million cubic metres. Regarding 2019, the forecasts speak of a volume greater than 15 million cubic metres with even darker hypotheses, which reach 30 million cubic metres. âAs for the presence of bark beetles,

Nelle precedenti emergenze degli anni Ottanta e Novanta non the situation is catastrophic in most of the territory of the Czech Republicâ, explains the Forest Protection Service (LesnĂ ochrannĂĄ sluĹžba). âIn many areas its spread is out of control.â In reality, the spruce bark beetle crisis is a perfect storm resulting from a combination of short-term, longterm, natural and social, ecological and economic factors. The underlying factors of the crisis are the persistent drought, which has weakened the trees, the rising temperatures that favour the reproduction of the parasite, and the uniformity of the Czech forests composed essentially of fir trees, the favorite food of the bark beetle. âResearch, culling, removal and effective reclamation of affected trees must be a priority,â adds the Forest Protection Service. But often timely intervention is made very difficult by the chronic lack in the Czech Republic of manpower, by the lack of interest in forest work and

out of 2.6 million of total forest area, and about half are headed by a single company, Lesy ÄR sp (the acronym s.p. stands for stĂĄtnĂ podnik, state company). On the one hand, the strong concentration of ownership would facilitate the implementation of emer-
gency measures, but on the other hand the public nature of the company often slows down the implementation of such measures. In fact, Lesy ÄR must follow the procurement code and all other procedures which the public administration is subject to.
And the public nature of Lesy ÄR is one of the central issues of the current catastrophe. There is no doubt that the state forest company has done a lot of pushing regarding the fir monoculture in view of immediate profits. In the years before the crisis, Lesy ÄR was milling profits of

Nonostante le varie misure intraprese, fermare la catastrofe risulta molbillions of crowns, which have long been an extra source of income for the state budget. According to critics, this is not matched by equally careful attention towards the ecosystem of the woods. Foresters have an increasingly larger area to monitor and do not have direct means of intervention available. The company, which thanks to its dominant position always attracts numerous criticisms, rejects all charges and indicates the measures adopted. Among these there is also the renewal of wetlands, which should retain water in the woods and alleviate drought phenomena. Despite the various measures undertaken, stopping the disaster is very difficult. âAt the moment we do not know if we will be able to contain the disaster in the future or stop it,â explains VĂt Ĺ rĂĄmek, director of the Forestry and Game Management Research Institute (VĂşlhm). According to many predictions, the calamity will only come to an

to difficile.
end when the bark beetle has devoured all the fir trees at their disposal, as is already happening in the most affected districts of Moravia and Silesia. It is clear that after the crisis, the Moravian and Bohemian forests will no longer be what they once were. The ancient temptation of spruce The spruce is an old temptation of Bohemian and Moravian foresters. About one hundred years ago, as 1910 came to a close and at the start of the 1920s, the emergency related to the infestation of the nun moth (Lymantria monacha) broke out, which sent a third of the Czech woods down the drain. The
causes of the crisis were very similar to that of today: years of drought, less care of the woods due to the peculiar post-war situation and the lack of manpower, and above all the spread of fir monoculture planted even in low and extremely low altitudes. As in the 1920s, todayâs foresters also see a single solution to get out of the emergency: a greater spread of mixed-composition forests with a greater presence of beech and oak trees. The new tree mixes will also have to withstand changing environmental conditions due to global warming. In general, however, a radiââ be necessary, cal change in values will
favoring environmental and long-term landscape advantages over immediate economic gains. The new climatic conditions will not allow the mistake of the fir monoculture to repeat itself. According to experts, due to climate change, the landscape in Bohemia and Moravia will resemble the areas of northern Italy or centralsouthern France with a large presence of vineyards, small water mirrors and wetlands and less dense mixed forests. The signs of the spruce bark beetles on the trees are farewell letters to the landscapes that we today consider typical of Bohemia and Moravia.

-------------------------------------------------------------------(20 giugno) Zuzana ÄaputovĂĄ in visita a Praga. -------------------------------------------------------------------(26 giugno) Investimenti diretti esteri in calo. -------------------------------------------------------------------(1 luglio) In calo utile Agrofert.

-------------------------------------------------------------------(29 luglio) Importazione alimentari in crescita.
VARIE (10 giugno) Il Padre Nostro in ceco rimane invariato.

Paolo Iannone, General Manager of UniCredit Bank, talks in the interview not only about the results obtained and the future challenges, but also about why the Group has decided to launch the Social Impact Banking programme in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. UniCredit Bank Czech Republic and Slovakia reported a significant improvement on the profit side in 2018. What are the causes of such a rise? 2018 was a very successful year for UniCredit Bank. We took the business opportunities that appeared in the market and achieved excellent business results. The consolidated net profit grew by 18.6% year-on-year to CZK
9.047 billion. The increasing volumes of client transactions, consistent management of credit risk cost, optimisation of operating costs and active management of the bankâs balance sheet structure particularly contributed to such a strong year-on-year increase. The key to growth in retail banking was simple products, regular offers innovations, such as U konto Business or U konto online, and emphasis on the customer experience. Our total number of clients exceeded 700 thousand in both countries, representing a yoy growth of 4.3 %. The volume of lending rose, too, with mortgages reporting a year-on-year increase of 5.8 % while deposits rose by 7.4 % in 2018. Of course significant contribution to
our performance was from our Leadership in Corporate Business, both given by our strong position in Large and Medium Companies, participating in several large transactions in structured finance, mergers and acquisitions, export finance, financing of commercial real estate, treasury and leasing and thanks to our very strong penetration with International Companies. We are also very proud of our double digit growth in SME segment, that actually is the segment we are growing the most over last several years. Youâve been in the Czech Republic and within UniCredit Bank Czech Republic and Slovakia for more than ten years now. How did the Bank change over that time and
what opportunities can you see in the years to come? Over the past ten years, the bank has overcome several challenges and has achieved the leading position on the Czech and Slovak markets. One of the most important challenges was the transformation of UniCredit Bank into a universal commercial bank and financial group and the cross-border merger of the Czech and Slovak banks. We are also proud of the large number of prestigious awards that we have won every year. I would mention, for example, the Global Finance magazineâs award for best services in the area of management and custody of bonds, the first place in the Trade Finance ranking chart of Euromoney magazine, or the award of our

Long-term potential GDP growth for both countries is estimated at 2 to 3 percent and is hence higher than for Western Europe. Furthermore, macroeconomic stability is well-anchored, keeping risks for businesses relatively low. Most international companies base their activities in Czechia or Slovakia with the purpose of servicing not
just the two markets but rather the whole region of CEE. Czech and Slovak economies are known above all as hubs for the automotive industry, but local policies aim to broadening the focus. Investors looking for qualified services with added value are more than welcome. Our bank is ready to help any company that shows inter-
est to open the doors of the Czech and Slovak as well as any European market in which our Group operates. We are a leading bank with rich experiences and broad know-how. We are successful in matching the interests of individual companies and support their ambitions and goals. Workforce crisis in Czech Republic: how do you evaluate this matter altogether and how does UniCredit deal with it? There is indeed a labor shortage in Czechia, as demand in the economy remains solid while productivity growth does not keep up. However, we would not call the situation a workforce crisis. Total employment in Czechia is still on the rise, as average retirement age keeps growing and more workers from abroad come to Czechia. Obviously, the labor shortage is worse for some professions than others and companies have
to come up with policies to stabilize their key employees. A plus of our bank is that we are creating a friendly atmosphere at the working place, we are adapting the corporate culture to the new generations that are part of our bank. We are innovating the work environment, leisure activities, regardless of the type of profession. Your Bank also operates in Slovakia, a country that has been part of the eurozone since 2009. From your point of view, how do you view the fact that the Czech Republic has not yet adopted the euro? For the bank, many processes would get simpler if it is operated with the same currency in both countries. However, we have to respect that the euro adoption is a political rather than an economic decision. UniCredit is involved in the Social Impact Banking, what does it involve?

As part of the Social Impact Banking Initiative, we provide funding where it has a real impact on society, its development, and helps address social problems. The support is based on four basic pillars - microloans for start-up entrepreneurs, impact financing, or financing in areas with social impact, financial education and volunteering. The Bank supported the Nave Italia project with Italian Embassy. Why you have chosen that? I am very happy Czech kids within Nave Italia Project could enjoy an amazing and full of fun expedition on
board of the worldâs largest sailboat. UniCredit Bank is proud to support this project, to convey a unique experience to selected children after oncological treatment or to children from disadvantaged families while giving hope and encouragement to others. Our long-term commitment within social impact banking initiative is to support and connect communities and raise awareness about them to have a positive impact on society. UniCredit is often considered an expression of Italy in this country. What is your opinion?
UniCredit is a simple successful panEuropean Commercial Bank, with a fully plugged in Corporate and Investment Banking, delivering a unique Western, Central and Eastern European network to its extensive client franchise: 26 million clients. We are a solid bank with strong capital ratios and an unstinting focus on value creation for all its stakeholders through innovative commercial actions, digital transformation, enhanced risk management, transparent corporate governance and key social impact banking initiatives â based on ethics and respect.

Notes from the underground and timeless nature, a reportage from a border region among the World heritage sites

I SEGRETI DEI MONTI METALLIFERI THE SECRETS OF THE ORE MOUNTAINS Letâs start from the beginning. If history has christened the Ore Mountains with this name, the explanation must be simple. Under these soft-lined mountains, under the slopes of coniferous and beech forests and the green, yellow and pink summer meadows, under the small seventeenth-century centres, under the wood craftsmen and the thermal pools, the mines have produced treasures for centuries. From iron to silver, from tin to uranium, eight centuries of extraction have followed and shaped the needs of dif-
ferent eras, a story of man and the coinage technique of medieval coins to the tragedies of the nuclear age. In July 2019, the region was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is the natural limit between the Czech north-west and Saxony. On the south side the slopes are steep, and mild on the German side. Consequently, the area in question extends much more in Germany than in the Czech Republic. We have decided to cut the region in two and undertake a journey, involving two stages on both sides of the border.

Czech side JĂĄchymov is a snake-shaped spa town that climbs up the narrow valley dedicated to St. Joachim, of three thousand inhabitants, at difference of altitude of 150 meters, where finding a flat road may prove to be difficult. A mixture of fallen elegance and the popular strength of those who broke the mountain, the centre recalls the dark and mysterious tones of a David Lynch film. It developed from the early 16th century, when the rich silver vein of the rock was discovered. Little was

left from those times, since a fire almost completely destroyed it in 1873, and since the fortune of bygone days seems to have left little wealth behind. To welcome travelers from the street of Karlovy Vary, the majestic Radium Palace hotel, since 1912 a reference point for curative stays. Here too the name suggests what we expect: we are talking about radioactive spas. The presence of radon in the waters was first discovered here in 1896. Therapeutic use then spread to various spas in Europe. As for its effective-
ness, the scientific community today seems to be much more skeptical than in the past, letâs say, since it was discovered that radon is carcinogenic. However, in minimal doses it is still used to treat arthritis and rheumatism. The golden (and crazy) times of the radioactive spas can be found in the permanent exhibition just a stoneâs throw from saunas and swimming pools, we discover that they sold radioactive soaps for the bathroom, or in the city museum, where they show off, especially at dark, glasses
Until the outbreak of the Great War, JĂĄchymov was the only known source of uranium in the world. From its mines, Marie SkĹodowska Curie isolated radium and polonium. From its mines the Czechoslovakian communist regime provided the Soviets with the raw material for nuclear weapons. The infamous fields of forced labor are remembered by the âRed Tower of
Death,â a tall red-brick building part of the âVykmanov IIâ camp, which opened in 1951. It housed about 300 political prisoners, and in extreme working conditions many perished due to the lack of protection and the inhalation of radioactive dust. To the north, the country enters the mountains and the history of ancient mines. A world famous curiosity it contains, is the silver âthalerâ coined in JĂĄchymov (in German Joachimsthal) in the 16th century which is the basis of the American âdollarâ name.

Michal Urban, head of the Czech side for the drafting of the dossier, says that the idea was born in Saxony over twenty years ago. âIt was immediately clear that the project had no chance unless the Czech side was involved. The mining history of the Ore Mountains has been going on for centuries without the idea of a border.â The first contact was with the Most museum, but the project began to take shape only when the Karlovy Vary region was involved,

The town itself is made of ups and downs, with the large church at the top. But from an ecclesiastical point of view we are more interested in another building a stoneâs throw from the central square: the praise of the mine is blessed by a small church dedicated to St. Mary in the Mountains. Built in the 16th century, from 1863 it became the church of the miners, after they paid the restoration out of their own pockets, and at Christmas, they are also present in the nativity scene, in small wooden statues.

Ma dal punto di vista ecclesiastico ci interessa piĂş un altro edificio a due passi dalla piazza del Annaberg is a small town but a greater sense of well-being is noticeable compared to the Czech side. The city museum, focused on the mining community is modern and interactive, and the miniatures and the stories of the miners become protagonists there. The restaurants offer typical dishes of the Erzgebirge, the German name of the mountains: the most famous is the âButtermilchgetzen,â a buttermilk and potato pancake that is served either sweet, with apple marmalade, or salted, with bacon. Here the tourist attraction for metal enthusiasts is the Fronhauser Hammer, a museum outside the centre where a blacksmith still flattens the iron on the anvil like two hundred years ago. The mineral wealth finds its final celebration in Freiberg, a city southwest of Dresden where the mountains are long gone, but the city is among the centres on the World Heritage list because it was here where silver was worked. zione turistica per gli appassionati del metallo è il Fronhauser Hammer, un museo fuori dal centro dove un fabbro fa ancora appiattire il ferro sullâincudine come duecento anni fa.
For many years, at least seventy, the commitment of the president-philosopher Masaryk seemed to be almost in vain. The MUNI had indeed to go through difficult years, consisting of contrasting opinions on the choice of Brno as the seat of the second university in the country, violence towards teachers (a quarter of science professors were killed or tortured by the Nazis), purges, closed faculties and political pressure during the communist regime. Even for this troubled past, the growth of Masaryk University appears surprising today, and is considered exemplary by the

European University Association, one of the most prestigious community realities in the academic sector. Curious to find out the reasons for this rapid development, we met its rector, MikulĂĄĹĄ Bek, also thanks to a communication office that has always proved to be helpful and professional. Bek will conclude his second term as head of the university in September and will devote himself exclusively to the office of senator, leaving to his successor, the neurologist Martin BareĹĄ, a MUNI ranked among the top 600 universities in the world which today has new and modern facilities. These include the Bohunice campus, an imposing complex of buildings with herringbone architecture, which houses some of Masarykâs nine faculties. According to Bek, the growth of Brno as a centre of
research and innovation is âthe result of a work of cooperation between municipal, regional and academic institutions, and some companies, together with the chamber of commerce (ed. the second university of the country today can count on partnerships with large companies rooted in the city, such as, for example, KB, Starobrno, Esox, NeoVize, Reehap and Raiffeisen Bank). A commitment that arose in the 1990s, when after the collapse of communism and in the midst of a crisis in the traditional productive sectors of the city (heavy industry, textiles, ceramics and machinery), it was agreed to transform the Moravian capital into a fertile context for innovation that based its strength on the exaltation of human capitalâ. This path, according the rector, has been, and still is successful âthanks to
the size of Brno, certainly large enough to be the second most inhabited centre of the Czech Republic, but small enough to easily build (and sometimes informally) profitable relationships between the different local realitiesâ. But the strength of scientific Brno also has another raison dâĂŞtre: internationalization. This is demonstrated by the numbers of St. Anneâs University Hospital, which also has two Italian researchers at the helm, as Principal Investigator, of three research groups, of CEITEC and Masaryk. The latter, in 2018, hosted over 1,500 foreign students, with an incoming and outgoing flow to other universities which exceeded 3,500 units, out of a total of 35,000-40,000 university students. The same applies to the number of researchers attending Masarykâs offices and laboratories:

est spheres of the instituteâs organizational structure see the involvement of a consultative body made up of nonCzech members, the International Scientific Advisory Board. If the main consequence of this strong international presence is to guarantee
the university a culturally rich context, an important environment for research and innovation, there are others that are relevant nevertheless. One of these is the international reputation, a factor that according to Bek, âenables the university to possess appeal to scien-

I suoi studi infatti riguardano lâeconomia
met Tommaso Reggiani, a thirty-fiveyear-old originally from Milan who now works at the Department of Public Economics of MUNI. After studying in Milan and Bologna, Reggiani was a researcher and assistant in Germany and France before attending and passing the selection of Masaryk as Research Associate. Here he deals with the teaching of microeconomics and behavioral economics for about 30% of his time and research for the remaining 70%. The research carried out together with the team to which he belongs is particularly interesting, and takes place in some of the most modern laboratories of the university. His studies in fact concern behavioral economics and combine the norms of economic and psychological sciences with ethical issues. To the observed sample they ask to make decisions based on monetary incentives, but
also influenced by the presence of ethical and moral dilemmas, thus analyzing a path that is barely beaten by economic research. Reggiani told us that he had replied to an email from MUNI inviting him to apply for the role of researcher, and today, two years after his arrival, he is quite clear on what are the strengths and weaknesses regarding the Italian context. One of the strengths is the incentives to do research. For Reggiani, at Masaryk, âthe meritocratic system of the funding and structure of researchersâ salaries (a fixed part for teaching, another dependent on the quantity and quality of studies and experiments carried out) makes the creative and research efforts rewarding. In Italy, on the other hand, the payment for the professors ends up being similar to the Czech in the amount, but not in structure, since the fixed amount dedicated to

teaching is already high and almost all the stimuli for research are lackingâ. The second and perhaps most important advantage of Czech universities, particularly MUNI, concerns bureaucracy. The academic bureaucratic machine is streamlined and aimed at supporting researchers in their different operational needs: for the Italian researcher, in fact, âthe administration is fluid, with
focus
And this aspect is of fundamental importance, because it reduces the presence of abuse and illegality. Not everything, however, is a bed of roses in the Czech Republic. According to Reggiani, âdespite the marked innovative potential of Czech scientific institutions and the commitment dedi-
cated towards it by a good part of their leadership, some intermediate-level academic choices seem to be victims, not rarely, of a certain self-referentiality, and oriented more to short term goalsâ. And this could, at times, put the Czech system at a disadvantage in a very competitive international context. On the other hand, and despite the above-mentioned problems, Italy has
a better academic perspective, with the results of its scientific research remaining at a high level. And it is the rector himself who shows appreciation for a part of the Italian university system, when he cites Trieste as an example to follow for Masaryk: a relatively small, simple university of internationally recognized quality. According to Bek, it would not make sense to have

as a benchmark centres like the CERN or Oxford, because Brno is indeed an important place of research and innovation in the Czech Republic and Central and Eastern Europe, but it would be unrealistic to think of competing with contexts that historically and scientifically represent something unique in the world panorama. In any case and even viewing the case pragmatically, Masaryk University is destined to grow more, and the entire Brno scientific system alongside it. The economic development of the entire country and the meritocratic and transparent management of (but not only) the research funds, seem to be fundamental cornerstones for this growth, with very rosy prospects for the future. And on a related subject, this year the MUNI celebrates one hundred years. We wish them a happy anniversary!

His last words were for the bailiffs. To beg the officials not to take away his poor resting place. This is how supposedly ended the life of the Praguian Wenceslaus Hollar in London, in 1677. An ungrateful epilogue, for one of the greatest graphic artists of all time, an icon of the seventieth century Baroque art. And to think that this Bohemian
by birth and British by adoption, had attended royal courts and the high aristocracy, and crossed and captured for eternity the landscapes of half of Europe. Strange twists of fate, in a century bloodied by terrible wars. And if that werenât enough, there is a surprising silver thread crossing time and geography that links Hollarâs talent to
the images of the greatest genius of the Italian Renaissance: Leonardo da Vinci. The immense production of the Praguian artist comprises even a few dozen engravings inspired by the grotesque drawings of the Tuscan master. They are profiles of deformed men: warty noses, oblong chins, crippled faces. Grotesque portraits that reach

on a diplomatic mission in the name of the crown to Emperor Ferdinand II of Hapsburg. A diplomat involved not only in politics, but always looking for new acquisitions of works of art and for an efficient graphic artist able to undertake the reproduction of the items in his collections.
After this encounter, Hollar follows his count â and new client â from court to court, reaching the imperial one in Vienna and stopping as well in his native Prague. Precisely on that occasion, following Arundel â despite a short period of time spent in the Golden City â he created one of his most famous
works, the city panorama captured from PetĹĂn. An image that relays beauty and nostalgia, with a nearly romantic atmosphere. The artistâs affection for his homeland is perceived in this landscape. Speculations? Maybe. What is certain thought, is that even as an expatriate, in exile, the Bohe-
mian artist will have remained tightly connected to his identity: his signature was Wenceslaus Hollar Bohemus for the entirety of his life. However, letâs return to the story. When the Count of Arundel returned to England, Hollar followed him a nd settled in his benefactorâs London-based resi-

dence. England became his new home country. Itâs here that the Praguian engraver became an adorned artist. And itâs precisely in the English capital that his lines, precision and the beauty of his designs marked black on white a memory that would otherwise have been lost forever, gone up in smoke in the great fire of 1666. Itâs thanks to Hollarâs engravings that nowadays we can have an idea and an image of medieval London. Tireless worker, his talent for image doesnât match the one for business as the artist seldom sold his creations. Art never made him rich. Highly connected to his homeland, he left England only during the civil war, when, after being enrolled and taken prisoner, he managed to escape in incredible conditions. He returned to Antwerp where he created many of his famous works, including Dutch urban landscapes, seascapes, representa-

tions of nature. He returned to London in 1652. However, his work for editors and his revenues diminish as the Court would no longer buy his works after the end of the civil war. His success path descends. During this time, the plague takes away his young son, known for his artistic skills. Tireless, Hollar doesnât stop adding pieces to his great âuniverse workâ, because this is what it is about. An immense and heteroclitic production, comprising at least 400 designs and 3000 etchings. If the images of the German, Bohemian,
English and Dutch cities and country sides are without doubt his most famous works, the artist created many images of saints as well, scenes of the Old and New Testament, mythological and historical representations of plants and animals, still life. And to all this we add the Leonardesque Hollar. At least until 1666, we know that the artist reproduced unceasingly the drawings of the maestro from Vinci, present in the Arundel collection. Most of the engravings resulting from Hollarâs work are today kept in the Royal Library
of Windsor, in England, but thirty of these prints were bought in the 1950s by Carlo Pedretti, a distinguished art historian, specialized in Leonardoâs art, always aware of the value that Hollarâs engravings had in spreading Leonardoâs ideas in the seventeenth century. Precisely these were displayed this year in the exhibition âLeonardo designed by Hollarâ in Vinci, an event organized as part of the 500th anniversary of the death of the great Italian artist. In these unique creations, Hollar often associates the youth with the ancient,

the ugliness with beauty, reflecting Leonardoâs thoughts on beauty and ugliness: an aesthetic that combines the monstrous and the phantasmagorical seeking the sublime in foulness. Thus, when the most brilliant graphic artist of his time captures the way of the greatest Italian Renaissance genius, we find ourselves in front of an unusual, unique work, an art that echoes beyond the turns of history. This is the work of a Praguian artist born on SoukenickĂĄ street in Prague who left us a unique trace of our Italian heritage.

This country, as mentioned in our first article, despite its small size, is so full of castles that filmmakers from all over the world, even the great Hollywood giants want them as settings for their films. It is even common for a single film to make use of a multitude of these aristocratic residences, with the relative film crews moving the production from one side of Bohemia and Moravia to the other. The case of A Royal Affair, one of the best films of 2012 and the result of a co-production between Denmark and Sweden, is a particularly emblem-
atic example. Like many of the foreign productions filmed in these parts, it is a historical film, in this case from the 18th century, set during the royal court of King Christian VII of Denmark, and focuses on the love story between the sovereignâs wife, Caroline Matilda of Hannover, and the royal doctor, Johann Friedrich Struensee, played respectively by Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen. Over a period of 40 days and with a very large crew, filming took place in 20 different locations, all within the Czech Republic, including the castles of KromÄĹĂĹž, Ploskovice,

ÄeskĂ˝ Krumlov, KaÄina, Doksany and LedeÄ nad SĂĄzavou. There have also been cases where film-related needs caused other buildings to become castles. This is the case of the Archbishop Palace of KromÄĹĂĹž, built 1497, renovated in 1664 in baroque style and a World Heritage site since 1998, the interiors of which were used by MiloĹĄ Forman to simulate the imperial palace of Hofburg in Vienna during the filming of Amadeus (1984).

Formanâs Amadeus also shares the aristocratic residence of Ploskovice with A Royal Affair, another architectural gem already seen in numerous film fairy tales, such as Princ a VeÄernice (1978) directed by VĂĄclav VorlĂÄek, and classic comedies such as JĂĄra Cimrmann leĹžĂcĂ, spĂcĂ (1983). On the other hand, regarding the ancient manor of LedeÄ nad SĂĄzavou, a village in the VysoÄina region, it can be recognized in the Tv miniseries Les Miserables from 2000, an adaptation of the classic Victor Hugo

novel of the same name, and especially in Faust (2011) written and directed by the Russian master Aleksandr Sokurov, who with this film won the Golden Lion of the jury of the 68th Venice International Film Festival. Going back to Moravia, it is impossible to forget the castle-monastery complex of TĹebĂÄ, with St. Procopius Basilica. It is in this area where the very young Magda VĂĄĹĄĂĄryovĂĄ wanders around at the beginning of one of the best films ever made in the former Czechoslovakia, MarkĂŠta LazarovĂĄ (1967). Director FrantiĹĄek VlĂĄÄil chose the basilica, also included among the UNESCO world heritage sites, to shoot the convent scenes, while the Romanesque crypt served to create the necessary dark atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The Renaissance castle, the result of a reconstruction of a previous Benedictine monastery,
which took place in the second half of the 16th century, was later renovated in Baroque style between the 17th and 18th centuries. Another destiny however, was reserved for the baroque castle towering above the village of Vranov nad DyjĂ, in the district of Znojmo, just three kilometers from the Austrian border, which was transformed into a center of terrorist activity in xXx, the 2002 action movie starring Vin Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson and Asia Argento. The view from the top of the hill is truly spectacular, and it is a particularly popular destination over spring and summer for the many tourists who climb it. Of course, it would take entire books to discuss all the castles immortalized on the big screen adequately. It is no coincidence that two of the most popular genres of Czechs, historical films and

fairy-tales, strongly require this type of location. This is particularly the case of the âpohĂĄdkyâ, the fairy tales that best exploit these architectural gems, even if it is not possible to list them all. Bouzov Castle, for example, about half an hour from Olomouc, is genuinely stunning, and has been immortalized by fairy tales such as O princeznÄ JasnÄnce a lĂŠtajĂcĂm ĹĄevci (Princess JasnÄnka and the flying shoemaker, 1987) and the television series Arabela (1980-1981), which have benefitted from the romantic air that the building possesses, while the international public may recognize it from an episode of the series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and the Italian viewers specifically from the locations of Fantaghirò. a VeÄernice (1978) diretto da VĂĄclav VorlĂÄek, e commedie classiche come JĂĄra Cimrmann leĹžĂcĂ, spĂcĂ (1983).
Nel 2007, in un sondaggio del NĂĄrodnĂ pamĂĄtkovĂ˝ Ăşstav (Istituto del Patrimoof what one may think of the quality of the production, showcases a range of breathtaking castles of the Czech Republic, including those of PernĹĄtejn and Lednice. In addition to the fairy tale produced by Reteitalia, the Lednice fortress can also be seen in Bathory (2008) and The Omen (2006), the remake of the classic 70s horror film. Lednice park also does not lack appeal from a nature point of view, since it possesses a greenhouse with tropical plants and Romantic style buildings, including the oldest minaret in Europe.

There are also, if we speak of TelÄ, more recent examples such as the French film AngĂŠlique (2013), a new adaptation from the very popular adventure novel AngĂŠlique, the Marquise of the Angels by Anne and Serge Golon. Before closing we are obliged to dedicate a few lines to the Castle of HlubokĂĄ in South Bohemia, a splendid example of neo-gothic architecture, built following the romantic style of Windsor Castle, which some consider the most beautiful in the whole Czech
progetto repubblica ceca
Republic. The historic château, which owes its current appearance to the Schwarzenberg family, is remembered film-wise for a scene from Shanghai Knights (2003) and for being chosen as the location for the Eastern Coven in the movie Underworld: Blood Wars (2016). In this case, as in some others, these are perhaps films unworthy of architectural monuments of such splendor and historical importance. In any case, the recurring appearance of Czech castles in cinemas around the world is a cause of undeniable pride for the country.

In the historic Moravian capital, MoĹic Grimm and mostly his son FrantiĹĄek AntonĂn had a meaningful career although their work is nearly unknown to the central architectural histories. The name of the German architect and builder MoĹic Grimm â from neighboring Bavaria â appears in the registers of the Praguian Building Guild around 1690. However, shortly after, at the beginning of the following century, he steadily ran his activity in Brno. As soon as he arrived in the city, he completed the Dominican monastery, whose reconstruction works were started in the mid-seventeenth century by Giovanni Battista Erna from Como. In his fifty-year career, MoĹic was able to work as an architect and even more as a builder on many constructions,

some of which cannot be ignored. Among these â all in Brno â we must mention the development of Schrattenbach Palace (nowadays the JiĹĂ Mahen library) based on a project of the Austrian Christian Alexander Oedtl, the partial baroque adjustment of the interiors of the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and the restyling
with extension of Reduta, one of the oldest theatrical buildings in Central Europe. Also, MoĹic took part in the eighteenth-century expansion of the Buchlovice Castle, when, based on a project of Domenico Martinelli, a comfortable Baroque villa and garden both in âItalian styleâ were added to the medieval fortress.

intellectual of the eighteenth century, FrantiĹĄek AntonĂn aspires â as we would say today â to âinternational education.â His talent and desire to learn lead him to search for an intellectual landscape decidedly broader than the horizons the Margraviate of Moravia could offer him. Thus, only in his twenties, he began his âlittleâ Grand Tour. The first stage, Vienna. In 1730, he enrolled here at the Academy where he studied drawing and painting. The first real turning point took place in 1733 when his name is documented as Academicus militaris and pupil of the Milanese Donato Felice Allio. Following his master, he took part in the design of some of his works, including part of the extension of the Klosterneuburg abbey complex in baroque and rococo patterns, an ancient spiritual center in the vicinity of Vienna that the Habs-
burgs aspired to transform into a sort of Austrian Escorial. A few years later, young Grimm arrived in Rome, a sought-after destination by all architects since the Renaissance. In between the glorious relics of the past and the artistic turmoil spinning around the papal court, FrantiĹĄek AntonĂn stayed there for about two years, entering the studio of Nicolò Salvi, author of one of the symbols of the eighteenth-century in Rome: the Trevi Fountain. Salvi would become a great designer of scenographic equipment, a student of Antonio Canevari who introduced him to an in-depth knowledge of the classic. These circumstances influenced FrantiĹĄek AntonĂn, as shown by the graphic studies reflecting Salviâs style and his powerful scenographic ability and sensitivity for classical language. Among these, there
are some sketches precisely for the Trevi Fountain and the facade of the San Giovanni Basilica in Laterano, as well as the reliefs of St. Peterâs dome. Grimmâs Italian visit â during which he collects drawings and documents â reaches other essential destinations for an architect like Vicenza, Caprarola, Milan, Turin, and Bologna, bringing back information (inevitably touched by Salviâs ideation) on the firing debate amid âancientâ and âmodernâ between Italy and France. In 1740, FrantiĹĄek AntonĂn arrived in France for a short visit to which dates back the plan for a castle attributed for a long time to Fischer von Erlach as an early work. Ironically, the short visit in France stylistically conditioned the work of young Grimm at his return home much more than the Roman studies, even though

some details typical of the Italian plasticity appear in his facades. Unlike the buildings on which he worked alongside his father, the French baroque emerged clearly in many of his autonomous works, both when engaging delicately in sacred architecture - as in the case of the Church of Holy Trinity in Drnholec â or developing large noble residences. We mention the Napajedla Castle built for Anna Maria von Rottal or the most impressive Ĺ˝idlochovice and Vizovice castles, real baroque castles having even their parks dominated by the French style. riportando informazioni (inevitabilmente âcontaminateâ dal pensiero di Salvi) sul dibattito tra âanticoâ e âmodernoâ che imperversava allâepoca tra lâItalia e la Francia.
tury, the church of the Annunciation in Ĺ ternberk is a curious case where the facade seems to blend with elegance the thorough knowledge of the classic, the Central European tradition and the grand French mansions. FrantiĹĄek AntonĂn was a tireless designer and collector of architectural plans. His collection goes far beyond the local interest, reflecting the story of his career and talent along with the cultural magnitude of a Central European architect of that time. Besides his projects and architectural sketches, the collection of over a thousand sheets includes art drawings adapted to operating machines,
studies and findings on existing buildings he came across in his travels and many designs of others collected by him and his father. On the death of FrantiĹĄek AntonĂn, the rich collection escaped the unfortunate destiny of many similar funds and collections passing to his latest patron, Prince Karl Salm-Reifferscheidt, who enabled its conservation in an exceptionally intact form. Although restricted, the collection is available even online, a large part of it being nowadays preserved in the Moravian Gallery, in the Governorâs Palace in Brno city-center, reconstructed in baroque style by MoĹic and FrantiĹĄek AntonĂn Grimm.

The golden nightingale, the golden voice of Prague, the master, Divine Karel and even the Sinatra of the East. These are just some of the nicknames given over the years to Karel Gott, a true symbol of the Czechoslovak (and later Czech) pop song. One of the few, if not the only, singer in the territory to have also had some success abroad. It is no coincidence that Mariusz SzczygieĹ, a sort of Terzani of the Vistula, decided to name his book of reports and stories about communist Czechoslovakia Gottland. The journalist, through that title, had wanted to exalt the essence of the atheist country that had replaced BĹŻh (God) with Gott (Karel). The release of the book in the Czech Republic in 2007 had also caused copyright problems: Gottland was in fact a registered trademark and referred to the Gott museum in KolĂn. Yet, according to the singer, his career
began almost by accident. Born on 14 July 1939 in PlzeĹ, in what was then the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, he said that his dreams as a child and as an adolescent were two different ones: driving steam locomotives and painting (at least the latter, over time he would fulfil). To this day, 80 years later, Karel Gott is mentioned especially when the ZlatĂ slavĂci, the golden nightingales, the top prize in Czech pop music, are awarded. And it is no coincidence that zlatĂ˝ slavĂk is one of Gottâs nicknames, as he is still the singer who wins the most. 60 years ago, if someone had told Karel Gott that he would become the most popular singer in the history of Czech pop music, he would have laughed. Nevertheless, at the time he participated in a competition for talented singers but was not chosen. From there the father decided to enroll him in a professional institution.

âQuando mi hanno sentito cantare Only You mi hanno subito offerto
Qui un suo maestro (Konstantin Karenin) gli Gott ended up in the factory and in his spare time he began his vocal career as an amateur, going to sing in cafes in the late 1950s. Since the public response was good, he began to perform more and more often and soon began to study opera singing, abandoning the factory work he had had until then. Here one of his masters (Konstantin Karenin) gave him one of the basic pieces of advice, which he claims, is behind his success with women: âto never mention having studied to be a tenor at the conservatory, otherwise they will get scaredâ. The first breakthrough in his career, however, came at the age of 24, in 1963. At that time, JiĹĂ Ĺ litr and JiĹĂ SuchĂ˝ came to listen to concerts at the CafĂŠ Vltava in Dejvice, where Gott was performing. âWhen they heard me sing Only You they immediately offered me a contract at the Semafor divadloâ, where the singer would participate in the making of the musical Kdyby tisĂc klarinetĹŻ (If a thousand clarinets). Only a year later he would already win his first zlatĂ˝ slavĂk.

Another great moment in Gottâs career arrived just three years later, in 1967, with his trip and his several month-stay in Las Vegas. This too was an event marked by destiny, even if in an opposite direction to the way in which the master became a singer. In 1960, in fact, worker Karel Gott had brought some American records to his colleagues and said he would like to visit Las Vegas. Obviously, everyone laughed, but as the singer would say in

a subsequent interview, in the end he had the last laugh, and he sent those same colleagues a postcard from the States with a dart on a building and the words âTonight I sing hereâ. During his stay in the US, Gott later met Karel Svoboda, who would go on to write many of the singerâs biggest successes, the most famous of which could be considered Lady Carneval. Soon Gott would start to regularly perform abroad. He sang in Cannes where

According to colleague Vlasta KahovcovĂĄ, one of the few places where the golden nightingale was submerged by boos was actually Italy. It was probably during a performance in Verona. In the 70s and 80s the career of Gott was constantly on the rise, for Czecho-
slovakia he became a mythical artist that for Italians could be summed up as a cross between Al Bano and Gianni Morandi. Most of his albums immediately became silver, gold and platinum (incidentally, at the time a gold record in Czechoslovakia was obtained by selling 5,000 copies at home or 2,500 abroad), and the best-selling Czech album of all time in the country also belongs to him: âChristmas in Golden Pragueâ. sieme a Karel Kryl, che nel 1969 aveva scritto BratĹĂÄku zavĂrej vrĂĄtku (Fratellino chiudi la porta), la canzone simbolo della delusione per la fine della Primavera di Praga: ciò rappresenterĂ per la popolazione un segnale chiaro della fine del comunismo.

of which however went awry by choice of Martina ZboĹilovĂĄ, who later married MiloĹĄ Forman. A great success in a country led by a regime such as Czechoslovakia, as well as the possibility of performing abroad, suggest that the master also had excellent relations with the Czechoslovak Communist Party. As a matter of fact, despite being seen as a singer symbolic of normalization, who received various favors from the leadership, such as being allowed to appear on television with long hair, a trick he used to hide protruding ears, he was always much loved by the public. Precisely for this reason, Gott was one of the signatories of the Anti-charter, a document in which artists and intellectuals who were the most popular in the then Czechoslovakia responded to the Charter 77.
But it is also true that one of his songs, Kam ĹĄel mĹŻj bratr Jan (Where my brother Jan went), released in 1978 from the cover album Romantika, is indirectly dedicated to Jan Palach. And again, in 1989, from a balcony of the Melantrich Palace, in front of a packed Wenceslas Square, Gott sang the Czech national anthem along with Karel Kryl, who in 1969 wrote BratĹĂÄku zavĂrej vrĂĄtku (Little Brother close the door) the song symbolic of the post-Prague Spring disillusion: this would be a clear signal to the population of the end of communism. However, the end of the regime was seen by the singer as a probable end of his career. It is true that in 1992 the Polish magazine Wropst had classified him as the richest man in Czechoslovakia but the market had changed: Western music had finally arrived and the master feared, as he would say
Come? In short, Gott was afraid that people would lose interest in him, being partly seen as a symbol of the music that was the most popular under the previous regime. This was not the case, and in fact Gott would be the singer âfrom beforeâ who would have more fans also among the new generations. How is that? The singer says itâs his attitude and his excellent relationship with the public. VĂĄclav Havel, who had signed Charter 77, also congratulated the master on his 60th birthday, saying that âKarel Gott is an example of continuity for me, like ĹĂp Mountainâ. And on closer inspection, the two things of socialist Czechoslovakia still active today are precisely those that âcontributed the mostâ to the national turnover of the socialist country: Karel Gott and Ĺ koda.

Moriva il sovrano ceco Venceslao IV Death of the Czech king Wenceslaus IV 600 ANNI FA 600 YEARS AGO
Son of Charles IV and of his third wife Anna SvĂdnickĂĄ, the Czech king Wenceslaus IV died on August 16, 1419. Wenceslaus was a rather immature king, and he had to take on the burden of his responsibilities at an early age: he was only two years old (June 15, 1363) when he was crowned by the Czech king ArnoĹĄt of Pardubice and at age 15 (July 6, 1376) he was awarded the Roman crown in the cathedral of Aachen. Wenceslaus IV wasnât very fortunate. On one hand, unpredictable catastrophes: during his reign, Bohemia was hit by the plague epidemic, generating a real economic and moral crisis. On the other hand, power dynamics: the sovereign often came into conflict with the nobility, so much that in 1394, he was captured and imprisoned. During his reign, the Hussite revolution took place, originating in the famous defenestration of the councilor of the Prague municipality. According to some witnesses, King Wenceslaus IV was so shaken by this event that he suffered an illness leading to his death on August 16, 1419, in NovĂŠ HrĂĄdy.

Veniva approvata la Confederazione boema The Constitution of the Bohemian Confederation 400 ANNI FA 400 YEARS AGO
66
This year we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Bohemian Confederation. It was an alliance of non-Catholic classes on the Bohemian Crown lands. The treaty was signed in Prague, on July 31, 1619 and its extremely detailed content was composed of over a hundred articles. This laid the foundations for a new political system of the kingdom, as it regulated the governmental order of the Bohemian Crown in order to decentralize the governing power and make it more collective. The role of the king was considerably reduced, surprisingly for the time: during the coronation, he had to swear to respect the acts of the Confederation (a sort of constitution, nowadays). Bohemia became an elective monarchy and the high aristocracy was the one to benefit from this change. Even the relations between the neighboring classes changed: Moravia, Silesia, Upper and Lower Lusatia gained the same level of representation as the Bohemian one and could take an active part in the election of the king.

Il ritrovamento della tomba di Giovanni Amos Comenio The discovery of the tomb of John Amos Comenius 90 ANNI FA 90 YEARS AGO
Since the second half of the nineteenth century, Czech patriots started to search the tomb of the famous thinker and humanist John Amos Comenius, considered the father of modern pedagogy. However, the burial site was only discovered on July 22, 1929, thanks to a group of Czech and Dutch researchers, led by JindĹich Matiegka, an anthropologist from BeneĹĄov. The tomb was found in the former chapel of the Walloon Lutheran Church in Naarden, a Dutch fortified town located twenty kilometers from Amsterdam. Comenius spent his last years precisely in Amsterdam, but itâs not clear why he was buried in Naarden. However, it was assumed that he used to go there to preach. After his death, the tomb fell into oblivion and the chapel was closed. After its discovery, a mausoleum named after Comenius was built in Naarden during the 1930s and a museum dedicated to the life and work of the Czech philosopher was opened in 1992.

On August 25, 1969, Ĺ koda assembly lines began their mass production of a car, the Ĺ 100 (and the almost identical Ĺ 110) which became the symbol of an era. Launched in the same year, the two models were really just a restyling of the previous 100MB models. The central part of the exterior and the entire mechanics were preserved from the old model. The novelty was in the front and arrear parts, more modern but equally much simpler. Even the interior was restyled. The sedans were sold until the end of the 1970s and more than a million of them were produced. During the 1970s, the Ĺ 110 export began as well in the Western European countries, including Italy. The goal of the Czechoslovak authorities was to create competition to a similar and popular western model, the Simca 1000. Even though the price was lower, the sales of Ĺ koda auto were rather limited.

The Italian translation of the book âZeptej se tĂĄty (Ask dad)â by Jan BalabĂĄn has been published. From the title a bitter irony transpires because âasking dad how things really went is no longer possibleâ. After the death of doctor Jan Nedoma, literally translated as âhomelessâ, his children Hans, Emil and Katerina along with their mother must face not only mourning, but also allegations of his alleged complicity with the communist authorities and corruption from who was once his best friend. âAsk dadâ is a book that deals with themes on the meaning, quality and the path of human life, on family relationships, on illness and death, but also on what one encounters later on. BalabĂ n manages to describe in an extremely precise way the tragic aspect of individual destiny which inevitably leads to its final point. The author asks several questions: is it not true that it is from birth that one begins to die? Who are we and what do we do in the meantime?

VaculĂk debuted in 1966 with the novel âThe Axeâ and in 1968 took part in the Prague spring by writing the so-called âManifesto of the Two Thousand Wordsâ. The author systematically writes texts as memories starting in 1975, every year and almost always in March. It is a collection of texts ranging from 1975 to 1989, including the unpublished ones of 1979 and 1968. Through these texts the author expresses his thoughts in an acute, ironic, at times amusing way, mixing observations on the awakening of nature with political, cultural and personal events, or memories of childhood experienced in the democratic years of the First Republic.

Patrizia Runfola, after her beautiful âPraga al tempo di Kafkaâ (Prague at the time of Kafka), again astonishes readers with the publication of a book dedicated this time to the life of Alfons Mucha, 80 years after his death. The author starts from the city of Prague, from that melancholy palace where Alfons Mucha spent the last years of his existence, before the Nazis arrested him, thus accelerating his death in 1939. Runfola dwells, in particular, on his precocious vocation to painting, fueled by music and a profound religiosity. The cities of Paris and Prague are also protagonists in Muchaâs life. His first work experiences at the theatre are described, the stay in the castle of Count Khuen Belasi, the activity of illustrator, America and the return to an artistic avant-garde Prague. The extraordinary life of this master of Art Nouveau is reconstructed by the author with a notable sensitivity and is introduced by the preface from Claudio Magris.

Patrik OuĹednĂk, a Czech writer living in France, has published the novel entitled âLa fine del mondo sembra non sia arrivataâ (The end of the world seems to have not arrived), the plot of which focuses on the figure of Gaspard Boisvert with whom the author shares his origin, name, profession and age. This novel, like some of its precedents, focuses on lies, inventions, statistics, atrocities and nonsense typical of the twentieth century. The central theme of the book is the life of Gaspard Boisvert, adviser of the most stupid of American presidents, where we talk about democracy, the missing testicle of Hitler, the prophecies of the end of the world that probably already happened without our being aware of it, of the politically correct and its comedy, religions and much more. All this is told in an unprecedented perspective from which a bit of cynicism emerges that makes the book very interesting, as well as instructive.

if we look beneath the surface, in reality there is no prove to corroborate this theory. In fact, itâs highly probable that this is one of those situations where an uncertain fact becomes accepted as true only for being extensively repeated. However, things could be very different.
Thus, a case worthy of Sherlock Holmes. Indeed, precisely the detective, figment of the imagination of Arthur Conan Doyle, could be the solution to what still remains nowadays a tiny literary mystery. Letâs take it step by step. We know that Pablo Neruda signed with this pseudonym for the first time
in 1920, at the age of sixteen, when he published a poem entitled âHombreâ in a local newspaper. Choosing an alias was justified by the fact that his father, a railroad worker, was not in favor of the poetic and artistic tendencies of his teenage son. But how is it that the young man chose precisely this Czech surname?

Many believe that Ricardo NeftalĂ Reyesread some of the works of the Czech writer Jan Neruda, and being impressed by it decided to use his surname. Nevertheless, this explanation loses substance after a simple bibliographic research, as it immediately results that the first translation in Spanish of the writer, âThe tales of MalĂĄ Stranaâ, came out in 1922, two years after the young poet chose his name. It is almost impossible that the future Nobel Prize winner had heard before that date of the Praguian writer who died in 1891. An interesting article from 2015 signed by the Chilean journalist Ernesto Bustos Garrido reveals important details that shed light on the story.

Sebbene la tesi piĂš diffusa e comunemente accettata sia proprio quella che vuole che il poeta cileno abbia Garrido underlines how Pablo Neruda was always very vague in providing the origin of his alias, and never gave anyone a satisfactory explanation. HernĂĄn Loyola, a scholar expert on the life of the Chilean poet, mentions that the name âPabloâ was a tribute to the French Paul Verlaine, without ever leading to the name of Jan Neruda. Although the most widespread and common theory is precisely the one wanting that the Chilean poet read by chance Jan Nerudaâs name in a magazine, in reality this explanation doesnât convince everyone. The Czechoslovakian journalist and reporter Egon Erwin Kisch played a fundamental role in the story around this small mystery. Kisch met Pablo in Madrid and becoming his friend he asked him for the first time about the origin of his alias in 1937, recognizing in it something very familiar. But Pablo didnât give the journalist a complete answer. Therefore, it was Kisch himself who asked the

According to some scholars, this was because he didnât hear about Jan Neruda before that meeting. Since then, a sort of game shaped up between the two friends. Kisch asked the poet on various occasions to explain the origin of his surname, and Pablo not only never provided him

the answer but always invited him to use his flair and talent of investigative journalist to solve the mystery. In 1939, when the journalist had to flee Europe for political reasons and took refuge in Mexico, Kisch asked him the same question again yet Pablo was elusive once more. During a conference that took place in Alicante in 1999, Robertson Ălvarez, one of the poetâs researchers, mentioned that

the only thing Pablo replied on that occasion was that he found the surname âNerudaâ in a magazine, without specifying to Kisch if it was Jan Neruda or not. Kisch himself initiated some research and began to doubt that it could refer to the Czech writer, considering that the name of Jan Neruda seemed to have been completely unknown in Latin America before 1923. After the end of the Second World War, Neruda and Kisch met again
and, inevitably, the crucial question was asked again. Neruda himself mentions in his memoir âI confess I have livedâ that even on that occasion, the journalist, advanced in years, had not given up and asked him to finally reveal the truth. But Egon died without having received a complete answer. Pablo Neruda visited Prague between 1950 and 1951 and, on this occasion, brought flowers to the grave of Jan
Neruda. However, even then he never admitted to any journalist of having taken the surname from him. On U VrchlickĂŠho street, in Prague 5, there is a bronze bust of the poet, âgreat friend of the Czechoslovak peopleâ, made in 1980, by the sculptor ZdenÄk KolĂĄĹskĂ˝ in memory of the Chileanâs visit in Czechoslovakia. in questa occasione il giornalista, giĂ avanti negli anni, non si desse per vinto e gli chiedesse di rivelargli finalmente la veritĂ . Since that moment, the matter seemed forgotten for a while until, almost a decade later, something unexpected came up. In 1981, the Chilean poet Miguel Arteche, in number 187 of the âHoyâ magazine, entitled âSherlock Holmes admires Nerudaâ, claimed that the young Ricardo Reyes read the surname âNerudaâ, either in a magazine, as mentioned by the poet himself, but not a magazine referring to the Czech Jan Neruda, either in a Sherlock Holmes story. The translations of Arthur Conan Doyleâs stories were, in fact, easily available in Chile, in Spanish, when the poet was still a boy. In the work âA study in scarletâ, published in 1887 and translated into Spanish with the title âA strange crimeâ, Sherlock Holmes meets the violinist Norman Neruda, a character who, among other things, really existed. It

Therefore, it is highly probable that the Chilean has seen the name for the first time precisely in there and used it to conceal his identity from his father. He legalized his name as his own two decades later. It is obvious that any speculation on the origin of his surname fades in front of the beauty and power of Pablo Nerudaâs lyrics. However, having to choose between the two proposed theories, we could avail ourselves of the famous

âOccamâs Razorâ (dear even to Sherlock Holmes). This methodological principle involves that in order to elucidate an unknown matter, the simpler and logical explanations should be preferred to the more complicated ones, under equal conditions. Thereby, regarding the most well-known but astute theory that sees in Jan Neruda the inspiration of the poetâs alias, the simplest theory of Doyleâs novel is not only more plausible, but as it appears, even âelementaryâ.
