Studio G’s awardwinning competitive team participates in performances locally and across the country.

WHILE THE WORLD held its breath, the art

of dance was able to provide an escape for the students of Studio G Performing Arts Center.

And despite the challenges of teaching remotely, Studio G Owner and Artistic Director Gina Dudash, says she adopted the temporary motto “dancing alone, together.”

In 1997, with over 30 years of experience in the dance industry, Dudash formed Dance Grosse Ile, now Studio G. Since then, Dudash and her team of talented instructors have introduced countless children and adults to the beauty of dance. Studio G’s award-winning competitive team participates in performances both locally and across the country, and many of their students have gone on to professional careers of their own, attending prestigious dance schools and joining renowned companies. With such a long track record of success, it’s no surprise that Dudash is able to ad-

just quickly to unexpected problems and make the best of difficult situations. That’s why very early in the pandemic, she made the decision to temporarily close both of her locations and began conducting classes via Zoom video chat.

“We couldn’t risk the health of our kids, and we also couldn’t risk the dancers losing what they had been working on,” explains Dudash.

“Because this is a temporary setback, we knew we had to keep at it. Just like any athlete, if you don’t condition every day, you can lose a lot of your skill and flexibility.” Through Zoom, instructors can still see the students and give feedback on form or technique, and students can see the instructor demonstrate corrections when necessary. Lessons were also slightly modified to accommodate the more restricted space.

“It’s kind of strange, conducting classes like this, but it shows the unity that we have as a dance family and the commitment,” says Dudash.

While simply recommending that students practice at home and hold themselves accountable was an option, Dudash wanted to provide a sense of normalcy for the kids. “Despite what’s going on in the world, we just want to make these kids feel like it’s safe, and we’re still here for them, and carrying on in as normal a capacity as we can for them,” says Dudash. She also wanted to set an example that in the face of adversity, a little creativity can overcome even the most insurmountable odds.

Although conducting classes via Zoom wasn’t something Dudash had ever done or planned on doing in the past, she says she’s not opposed to using it as a tool for students in the future who are not able to attend the one-off class, but that it would never replace hands-on training. Looking forward, Dudash hopes to get back in the studio soon to salvage part of the season and says the popular summer camps are still on track with a few contingency plans if needed, including reduced class sizes. This year’s princess dance camp will run for one week in July with each day focusing on a different style of dance with a matching princess theme such as Elsa Ballet and Tinkerbell Tap. Classes are an hour and a half, and each child is given juice, snacks, a tiara, fairy dust as well as a daily gift. “We could consider remote classes as well, but will wait to see what the state mandate will be and if there is an interest, we will conduct princess camp via zoom, mailing out their class gifts to them ahead of time,” says Dudash. “We will cross that bridge when we come to it, but for now, we hope to be live and in the studio for the camps.”

Studio G’s camp classes are a great way for younger kids to experience a variety of dance styles and decide if they want to continue studying it. For those who choose to stick with it, they can dance purely for recreation or even take it a step further by auditioning to join the competitive team. Currently, the Studio G competitive team are reigning champions, receiving the highest scores in both competitions they attended before the season was cut short.

Studio G has been teaching students for over 20 years and plans to continue providing lessons for many more, teaching all genres of dance beginning at age two and going all the way up to adult classes. Dudash adds that she is optimistic students will be back in the studio before long, but that dancer’s safety and wellbeing always comes first and foremost, “and until we can be back in the studio, we will continue to offer Zoom classes for both recreation and competitive students.” • Studio G Performing Arts Center has two convenient locations, Studio G is located at 8525 Macomb St., Grosse Ile (right across the sidewalk from Hungry Howie’s), and a satellite program, Dance Brownstown, located at 21311 Telegraph Rd., Brownstown.

ISLAND VIEWS Sharing news and views by and for our community

Gigi’s Journal Hellooo to all my island fur family and friends, It seems like it’s been a hot minute since we last spoke. We swept through the holidays got some of the cold wet stuff and now into my favorite summer season.

Our routines have changed a lot and it seems like the dads are home alllll the time. Stinky Cat Menka and I have somewhat of a social distancing plan this is not a hard job with her old feline fish face always looking at me she thinks she being amuwwwzing. She really has the nerve to refer to me as Big Ol’ Bone Breath. Remember that us fur babies (except for naked kitty) understand the stress the moods and the alcohol intake in these challenging times. Here are a few recommendations to ease us all: Always have plenty of exercises and play time. Don’t let that Buddha get ya. Keep yourself clean and somewhat groomed you will feel better for sure.

Appreciate your surroundings no matter where they may be. And most important family time and remember be kind to one another even to stinky cats. BOL (bark out loud) I overheard dad on the phone talking to Mizz Rec. about an Island Celebration this fall.

Inspiring a Love of The Game

John Shade welcomed everyone on the tennis court regardless of gender, age or ability EDIT SUNDRA HILLSINGER

ANYONE WHO’S EVER played a game of

tennis Downriver and especially on Grosse Ile is almost guaranteed to know John Shade. In fact, for numerous islanders, his name is synonymous with the sport.

“When you think of tennis on the island, you think of John Shade. He’s Mr. Tennis,” says Grosse Ile resident Anna Kaiser.

After playing tennis for three years at Central Michigan University and graduating with a degree in physical education, Shade accepted a teaching position at Grosse Ile High School in 1972. At the time, tennis was becoming incredibly popular on the island, but no program

yet existed at the school. To rectify this, Shade established a boy’s and a girl’s tennis club, both of which he voluntarily coached until the board of education approved them, establishing Shade as the first coach of the Red Devils tennis program.

Shade often competed in local tournaments with doubles partner Dorothy Kaiser. Herself a passionate tennis player, Mrs. Kaiser says Shade was a quiet but honest man who she could always rely on to help her recruit for Tennis and Crumpets tournaments, which raised money for the Children’s Hospital in Detroit. “I think he’s wonderful, and I’m still a good friend of John and his wife Lee Ann,” says Mrs. Kaiser. Shade also coached Mrs. Kaiser’s son, Dean, then Dean’s daughter Anna.

It didn’t take long for the Red Devils to start winning. In 2005 and 2007, the boy’s tennis team won state championships, then in 2014 so did the girls’. In the four decades Shade coached the teams, he has led them to countless regional and tournament victories, with the Red Devils playing in the state finals almost every year, as well as over 50 Huron League championships between both the boy’s and girl’s teams.

Shade was also involved in the community, including organizing a summer recreation tennis program that got kids involved from within and outside the Grosse Ile community, as well as running the tennis program at the Grosse Ile Country Club. In 2003, Shade, along with some volunteers, renovated the Grosse Ile Tennis Center, where many young people worked their first jobs.

Since joining the community, Shade has become ingrained in the hearts and mem-

ories of folks near and far, many of which can’t sing his praises highly enough. Mike Rose, who Shade coached early in his tenure at GIHS, says that “I got to play for him for three years, and he encouraged me during every nook and turn in the road.” Rose added that Shade inspired him to become a tennis coach himself. “John has always been a huge ambassador and the greatest supporter, I’ve got nothing but love for him,” says Rose.

“I met John when I was in the third grade, and he was the gym teacher at Park Lane Elementary,” says Charles Kimm, who was not only coached by Shade in high school but also worked with him at the recreational depart-

ment as well as the Grosse Ile Country Club.

“I worked closely with him as a player, as an employee, and we became very good friends over the years… he’s just a class act.”

For Shade, everyone was welcome on the tennis court regardless of gender, age, or ability. His passion for inspiring a love of the game transcended even some of the most impossible odds, as it did for Frank “Scooter” DeMare. DeMare, who was born with a form of dwarfism called Nievergelts Mesomelic Dysplasia that caused a shortening of the limbs, making his forearms essentially non-existent, and forced his right foot to be amputated when he was five, says he never imagSummer 2020

Through diligence, DeMare was able to play on the varsity team as a freshman and win four consecutive league titles, and a couple of regional championships. DeMare was also a state quarterfinalist, played #1 singles his senior year and graduated with the most career singles wins for boys ever. His success let to him receiving a tennis scholarship to play for The University of Indianapolis. DeMare eventually returned to coach alongside Shade at the Grosse Ile Tennis Center as well as the high school and helped lead the school to its first ever State Championship.

When I was born, my parents were told I would never walk or lead a productive life.

John never let that be an excuse.

John spent countless hours with me from the time I was very young and believed in me the entire time. He instilled a love for the game that is like no other. Tennis was the gateway that opened so many doors to me personally and professionally.

Of all the time that he spent with me, there was no better feeling than capturing GIHS first ever state title in tennis together. This is something that can never be taken away, and we will always be a part of history.

I will forever be grateful for all that John taught me growing up about the game of tennis and for instilling a love for such a wonderful sport.

DeMare’s sentiments ring true for so many of the young people who came in contact with Shade. “To find someone so passionate about his profession and wants to share his knowledge reveals the mental discipline you can aspire to,” says Alex Moyer, another player for whom Shade provided their first work experience at the Grosse Ile Country Club.

It’s no surprise that a love of the game rubbed off on Shade’s daughter, Audrey.

Playing and coaching alongside her father, Audrey has learned from one of the best.

After playing in high school and at Cleveland State University, where she earned a tennis scholarship, Audrey eventually returned to the island and has taken up her father’s mantle with the same drive, dedication, and commitment to the community, the sport, and its players. “It’s nice to know that I can carry on his legacy,” says Audrey, “and the fact that I’m so involved in the community, I know all the kids, so I can keep growing the tennis culture and get people loving tennis, which is the main goal…the more people playing tennis, the better it is.”

Tammy Carney, a good friend of both John and Audrey Shade, says that she got to know the family when she started working with them at the pro shop. “One thing I just can’t say enough about him is his dedication to the community. John has a commitment that’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen,” says Carney.

While his commitment to the community has been substantial, Shade’s hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. He is a former president of the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association, as well as in the Hall of Fame of the Michigan High School Coaches, Michigan High School Tennis Coaches, and National High School Coaches.

Not many people can say they’ve done exactly what they love to do, but it’s clear that Shade did just that. And while hard work, time, and desire pay off, anyone who’s ever played a game with or for John Shade can attest to the fact that true love and appreciation is what builds the sort of legacy he has built. Q&A Century 21 Riverpointe Closing Manager and Administrator Trista Cortis-Redfield shares how her office is handling the COVID-19 pandemic and their plans for the future.

What changes did you make to your operations during the pandemic?

Beginning in mid-March we put protocols in place to protect our agents staff and clients. These protocols included stopping physical Open Houses having sanitizer in every common area at our office having a schedule for sanitizing the office throughout the day and before/after clients came in. We also put protocols in place for protecting clients during showings and appointments.

Once the Governor’s order was given to shelter in place real estate was deemed a nonessential business therefore we had to essentially close the office. Our staff and agents continue to work remotely but we are not allowed to show homes or physically meet with clients Continued on page 32

until the Governor’s order is lifted. We have also continued to list and sell homes during the Stay at Home Order. Because we cannot show homes or have face-to-face meetings we had to become creative by meeting with clients virtually doing virtual showings using electronic signatures having contracts esigned etc.

How did you communicate those changes to your clients?

We have really ramped up our social media presence during this time including Facebook Instagram and Twitter to help educate and inform our client base. We also have technology in place to email past clients of changes as they occur.

Q A

Did anything good come out of the pandemic?

Absolutely! Our social media presence has greatly increased. We have now assigned social media platforms to each manager and we are posting daily. We are also learning new and innovative technology that we plan to continue regarding virtual meetings and live stream video. We have been using electronic documents and signatures for quite a while now but it has been fantastic for all of us to become adept at using video meeting platforms like Zoom to communicate with each other and with the public better.

Our agents and staff have been meeting via Zoom at least once a week to discuss what is happening in our industry. They share ideas on work growth and how we can assist and collaborate with our clients and the public.

We have also been having live online training sessions with our agents twice a week to learn new software programs and hone our skills.

We are very fortunate to be a part of the Century 21 system and we have all taken advantage of the various online training and classes that they provide for us. We have a state of the art intranet system to help us with advertising communication education and business planning so we’ll definitely keep learning and using this new technology to help our agents and our clients.

Has this epidemic brought you to new realizations about how to be better prepared for a similar disaster in the future?

What things will you be doing differently once the virus subsides?

The epidemic has made us put policies and systems in place to work remotely. From a management standpoint although we have kept secure electronic records for years in compliance with federal and industry rules and guidelines we have gotten very proficient at using these electronic files daily even when we can’t be at the office. Although we are anxious to get back into the office to see our coworkers and clients in person we know that we can be successful and effective even while remote.

Do you have any plans for returning to normal and what would normal look like for your business?

A

Our plans on returning to normal will depend on the Governor’s orders and plan.

However the Michigan Association of Realtors has sent the Governor’s office a bulletin asking for real estate to be considered an essential service and outlining ways to do that in a safe way for everyone. These include in the beginning stages not having many people congregating at the office together limiting physical showings to the decision makers having “Protocol Stations” that include masks booties gloves and sanitizer set up in the entryway of every listed property and using technology and video as much as possible in our advertising and negotiating.

Gradually and safely we plan on starting to meet clients face to face and we will take every precaution. Even once the epidemic has completely passed we look forward to the continued use of video and technology in our training meetings contracts and advertising.

We believe that these things can only be of additional value to our clients and trusted real estate advisors as we continue forward in our industry. We have had a true focus on preparing for the surge of listings and sales that we know will take place once the Stay at Home order is lifted and we are excited.

We hope that we continue to make use of many of the habits we've developed such as families and friends talking more often and checking on one another and also people helping people and supporting our frontliners healthcare providers and essential workers. MICHIGAN’S OLDEST FAMILY-OPERATED farm is

looking to make some exciting improvements and additions this season.

From growing the hay that fed the Detroit trollies’ horses to raising the turkeys that fed our armed forces during WWII, the centuries-old Grosse Ile farm turned plant nursery, Westcroft Gardens, has seen plenty of changes in its time.

Now, under the management of Erica Lee Jackson, an 8th generation descendent of Westcroft’s first owners, the idyllic garden has rebranded to Westcroft Gardens and Farm, “Where moments blossom and memories grow”.

They’ve also updated their logo to depict the farm’s iconic barn that was built nearly 100 years ago and stands as a symbol of Westcroft’s resilience and longevity.

Jackson says when her aunt, Denise de Beausset, retired in 2016 after 30 years of managing Westcroft, the time was ripe for change. “For the bulk of our history, we were a diGROSSEILEMAG.COM

versified farm, and we are attempting to get back to those roots in a way that enhances the things we are doing already.”

As a part of the many enhancements, patrons who wish to rent space at the gardens will soon have access to an event focused greenhouse called the “Azalea House,” named for the hybrid varieties of the flowers created by 5th generation owner, Ernest Stanton.

“Our goal was to turn this into a place that is very open and welcoming to the community,” says Jackson, adding that the greenhouse will also provide Westcroft an opportunity to donate space to community benefiting organizations as well as increase their educational and workshop offerings.

Other new installations include a pollinator garden where people will be able to sit and enjoy the variety of wildlife that visit. This year Jackson intends to plant 66 sweet cherry trees that will beautify the garden and eventually become a pick-your-own orchard. Then next year, a field of lavender will be planted and eventually open for customers to pick.

These additions mark one of the largest and most significant changes to Westcroft since the 1920s and will give the community fresh reasons to visit the farm and gardens. “We’d like for families to be able to come at different months within the growing season and have a different experience each time,” says Jackson.

With varying harvest times, these changes will add a pleasant variety to Westcroft’s existing seasonal offerings, such as the Halloween Hayrides that run through October. These hayrides, established by Denise de Beausset, have become a tradition Downriver over the last 20 years,

and it’s expected the additions will help families create even more fond memories.
