Real Estate One’s Lisa Sobell retired from teaching special education in 2017, but not before she got her real estate license as a stepping stone to something new, if challenging. “I knew people’s perception of real estate,” Lisa says. “I knew it would be an uphill battle.” She’s been here her whole life, so she knows the area well, but she knew that wouldn’t be enough on its own.
“I think it's more important to point things out as I see them,” Lisa says, hitting on her policy of transparency and brutal honesty. She’d rather save someone money now, “Rather than just play into their excitement at the moment.” This kind of ethical real estate practice is what put her on the map in 2018. That year she was number one in sales in Riverview, a title she’s held ever since.
Lisa knows that since buying and selling a house is a huge decision for anyone, she wants to make sure that decision isn’t hasty. Buying and selling can be joyous, but it can also be related to grief. “I've talked people out of selling their house after their spouse died,” Lisa says, wanting to give people

time to process. “I've also talked many buyers out of buying; they get so excited that they overlook big things.”
This kind of care with her clients has led to Lisa receiving The President's Circle Award in 2018, the President's Council of Excellence Diamond Award in 2019 and 2020, and the President's Diamond Award in 2022, to name just a few. For her, though, it’s not just the numbers, but the satisfied customers.
Her favorite moment in any sale is closing day or new home buyers. She has a specific Prosecco she gives out to new home buyers. She has a dedicated fridge in her office just for it, in fact.
If they close at the right time of day, its mimosas all around. The bottle and the cork become a nice memento of this new chapter of life.
While she’s mostly Downriver, Lisa Sobell sells all over Michigan. She’s even shown houses while she was on vacation, but Michigan is where her ties are, and where she knows best. She keeps an eye out for her fellow Michiganders. “Just because you qualify for $300k doesn't mean you have to spend it all. Why not look at a $200k house so you can afford groceries?” It doesn’t matter if you’re buying your first house in your 20s or your 50s – you’re going to be excited, but she wants you to make the right decision for you.
“It’s easier to be honest,” Lisa says, “and say exactly what you see. What you see is what you get.” ◆

The Molnar family’s enduring legacy: Five generations of funeral service rooted in compassion
EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGER PHOTO S JEFF CORNS
Er. or the Molnar family, funeral service isn’t just a profession–it’s a deeply rooted legacy spanning a century. Established in 1923, Molnar Funeral Homes has been a pillar of support for families Downriver through generations.
The Molnar family has proudly entered its fifth generation of funeral service. Megan Ferguson is a licensed funeral director, and her sister, Madelyn Ferguson, recently earned her license in early spring 2025 after completing her apprenticeship.
Meanwhile, Melanie and Maranda Ferguson are also starting their journey, each pursuing degrees in Mortuary Science. As Megan, Madelyn, Melanie, and Maranda step into their roles the family’s dedication remains as strong as ever.
Fourth Generation Owner and Licensed Funeral Director, Angela Molnar-Ferguson, who lived above Molnar’s Southgate location growing up reflects on the family’s enduring success: “It is due to the strong family
values and work ethic that we have through each generation. We go above and beyond to make sure that every family that walks through our doors is treated as if they were one of our own.”
For Angela’s daughters, the path to joining the family business was shaped by their unique journeys and personal convictions. Megan, a newly Licensed Funeral Director, recounts her decision “I always knew that I wanted a career where I’d be able to help people, but I wanted to explore my options before choosing what I was going to do for the rest of my life.” She explains that it was two experiences she had while assisting that put everything into perspective – the first was while assisting her dad, Larry Ferguson, during a burial at Woodmere Cemetery where the plot was just across from her great-grandmother’s, Margaret Molnar. The second was helping make funeral arrangements for a family who had purchased Margaret’s home. “I took these two experiences as a sign from Great Grandma Molnar, and I’m forever grateful that I did because now I get to fulfill my passion for helping others through difficult times.
Madelyn, having completed a degree in psychology before pursuing mortuary science, found her calling through reflection and
For over 25 years, I’ve worked in Trenton’s real estate market, my hometown, selling more homes than any local realtor. I’ve learned to adapt, managing through the Great Recession’s tough times and today’s busy market. My experience and training, built over decades, have helped me stay steady. I believe realtors like me can guide clients toward their goals, offering support and confidence along the way.
I tell sellers to prepare carefully–know the process and get their homes ready. For buyers, I suggest patience in this fast market, assuring them there’s always another chance if they wait. Awards have come my way, but what matters most to me are the relationships I’ve formed–with clients and colleagues. They show I’m doing something right.
My career has had its highlights. I’ve ranked among the top realtors, in the top 2% nationwide, and held Million Dollar Producer status for 25 years. I’ve also earned an Associate Brokers License and a spot in the Million Dollar Round Table. These things reflect the time and effort I’ve put in, and I’m grateful for what they represent.
More than numbers, I try to bring care to every deal. My clients seem to appreciate that, trusting me for more than just results. After all these years, I still aim to keep things real–focusing on people, not just victories. That’s what keeps me going in Trenton’s real estate world.
“My

familial encouragement: “I know that I am where I’m supposed to be, and that is proudly carrying on the family legacy beside my grandfather, mother, father, and sisters.”
Now that Madelyn and Megan are present daily in the funeral home, each is committed to upholding the traditions of Molnar Funeral Homes while also introducing fresh ideas. “I intend to take on a bigger role within our family business while I continue to learn all that it entails from my family and the caring team that we have,” shares Megan of her aspirations.
Madelyn, eager to merge her psychology background with funeral service, plans to introduce grief support groups. She says, “My education has equipped me to provide meaningful support to grieving families, enhancing the services we offer.”
Working alongside their family, Madelyn, Megan, Melanie, and Maranda cherish the unique bond forged through shared experiences in the funeral business. John S. Molnar who represents the third generation reflects warmly on this dynamic “I feel as though my life has been fulfilled as I watch my daughter and granddaughters carry on our legacy. I am so proud and thankful for all we have accomplished together. I know that my mother, father, and grandparents are looking down on us with pride.”
Looking to the future, the young ladies are optimistic about Molnar Funeral Home’s growth. Shares Madelyn, “We are always looking to the future of our family legacy. Funeral Service is ever-changing, and it is our mission to keep up with new ideas we can add to help families create a personalized service for their loved ones.” To which Megan adds, “We will continue to adapt to the changes in the industry by offering new services, personalization options, and keeping our facilities up to date.
As Molnar Funeral Home marks its centenary, the family’s dedication to personalized service and community support remains unwavering. With the fifth generation at the helm, the Molnars are poised to shape the future of funeral service in the Downriver Community and beyond, ensuring their legacy endures for generations to come.

Empowering community through accessible arts, education, cultural programming

n the heart of Downriver (down town Wyandotte), the Downriver Council of the Arts (DCA), a non profit organization, is alert and active in keeping the artistic community of Downriver alive. An artistic community is not everyone’s top priority, and as a result, such a community appears to be hard to find. However, the DCA is committed to changing this, as when an individual feels like their creative process is contained to just one mind, it limits not only the work, but the artist themself.
The DCA is striving to reach young and experienced artists, current users of the arts, and those willing to learn, in order to provide a safe

This community is helped and spread by the DCA’s regional partnerships with other cultural organizations, schools, and service clubs that encourage the production of many special events throughout Southeast, MI. Some of these activities include art making at local events, communal plein air painting opportunities, hours dedicated to open art studios, and several professional art exhibits during each year. Starting this year, the Downriver Council for the Arts is pushing their empowerment of artists even further with Downriver Creates, an annual, easily accessible, online art auction. Downriver Creates is more than an auction however, “it’s a celebration of our region’s creative spirit and community pride,” says Dr. Kimberly Copeland, DCA Board President. “Every piece of art, every bid, and every dollar raised helps us build a more vibrant, inclusive arts scene across the 21 communities we serve.” ➜

Corewell Health™ has chosen Abridge as its enterprise-wide AI platform for clinical documentation to deliver a better patient experience and increase clinician satisfaction. During a 90-day pilot, Corewell Health’s enterprise team partnered with Abridge’s customer teams to implement the technology and saw a significant impact. The technology will be available to 4,000 employed Corewell Health physicians and advanced practice providers across 21 hospitals and 300+ outpatient and post-acute locations.
Abridge works by using AI to automatically transform patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time. Abridge also generates a Patient Visit Summary, delivered at the end of each visit and written at an eighth-grade reading level to ensure patients understand and are fully engaged with their care. With reduced administrative burden, clinicians can focus on patients, rather than paperwork, leading to improved patient satisfaction as well as better care.
“We are proud to be among the first to implement Abridge’s generative AI technology so our patients can get the best care possible from clinicians, who are more focused than ever on what matters most: connecting with and caring for patients,” said Corewell Health Chief Digital and Information Officer Jason Joseph. “We are investing in innovative AI capabilities that improve workflow and efficiency and are deploying them across the state to make a significant impact not only on our patient care, but also on our clinicians’ quality of life.”
• Increased patient focus: 90% of surveyed clinicians who used the technology reported a significant increase in the undivided attention they could give patients, and a 61% reduction in cognitive load, allowing for more focus and attention to patients.
Continued on page B 16
Continued from page B 15
• Significant time savings: Surveyed clinicians spent an average of 48% less time on after-hours documentation each week, decreasing from 4.3 hours to 2.2 hours.
• Clinician satisfaction: Of the surveyed clinicians who used Abridge, 85% reported an increase in satisfaction at work, and more than half reported a decrease in “burnout,” which is primarily caused by administrative burden and leads many clinicians to leave the profession.
“As a practicing physician, I’ve experienced firsthand the emotional and mental tolls of the burden of clinical documentation,” said Kristin Jacob, Corewell Health medical director for physician and APP wellbeing. “I'm now able to be more present with my patients and practice medicine in a more focused way. The reduction in cognitive load with Abridge has been incredibly freeing and is giving me back precious time with my patients and family.”
“People are at the heart of everything we do, and the inspiration for our legacy of outstanding outcomes, innovation, strong community partnerships, philanthropy and transparency. Belle Reve and Reilly Rae Aesthetics join forces in Wyandotte to offer holistic, confidence-boosting care
Nurse practitioner Kristen Pawloski and licensed esthetician Reilly Crosby have joined forces to provide clients in Wyandotte and the surrounding areas with a comprehensive and compassionate wellness experience. Belle Reve Aesthetics, owned by Pawloski, and Reilly Rae Aesthetics, owned by Crosby, share a welcoming space in Downtown Wyandotte. The two met while subleasing in a previous location, and quickly realized they could combine their expertise to offer clients a broader range of services under one roof.
Belle Reve Aesthetics is a leading med spa specializing in health, beauty, and wellness. With over 20 years of medical experience, Pawloski focuses on medical-based procedures, including dermal fillers, laser treatments, Botox, microneedling, IV infusions, and weight loss programs. At Reilly Rae Aesthetics, Crosby provides facials, microneedling, waxing, lash lifts, dermaplaning, Hydrafacial, and acne consultations. Their diverse backgrounds and skills allow them to offer proce-
dures and machines that other spas can’t.
“We frequently collaborate on events and giveaways,” Pawloski adds, “which enhances the range of services clients can enjoy in a single spa location.”
While their offerings differ, their mission is the same.
“We focus on treatments that truly build confidence,” says Crosby, “not just in how others see you, but in how you feel about yourself.” Together, they integrate aesthetic and medical treatments holistically, addressing not only cosmetic concerns but also underlying factors such as diet, stress, or environmental influences.
Both Pawloski and Crosby emphasize making clients feel comfortable and empowered throughout their self-care journey. “Beauty, health, and wellness should be accessible to everyone,” says Crosby. “That’s why we offer a wide range of services for various budgets. We want clients to enjoy the experience without feeling pressured.” They also advocate for being comfortable with taking time to care for oneself. “We’re trying to break away from the mold that aesthetics is a taboo subject. It’s okay to do something that’s just for you, solely because you enjoy the experience and the results,” adds Pawloski.
Whether you’re seeking cosmetic treatments, aesthetic medical care, or a combination of both, Belle Reve Aesthetics and Reilly Rae Aesthetics offer something for everyone. Together, they help the Downriver community feel confident and comfortable in their own skin. ◆

Kim Schutt, Minister of Worship and Events at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Trenton, is celebrating an impressive milestone: 30 years in his role. Throughout his tenure, he has been the driving force behind the church’s worship experiences, overseeing everything from the Worship Choir and Concert Choir to the Concert Orchestra. These musical groups play a vital role in numerous events, including the renowned St. Paul Lutheran Concert Series.
For Kim, the heart of his work is in collaboration – particularly in crafting the weekly worship services alongside the church staff. “I truly enjoy the opportunity to share the Word of God through music,” he says. “It’s a joy to take the talents of the choir members and praise bands and give them a platform to minister to others through worship, concerts, and community events.”
Over the course of his distinguished career, Kim has built an impressive legacy of service and achievement. Under his leadership, the choirs have performed in a variety of community events, including the Trenton Memorial Day Celebration and the city’s 4th of July Fireworks. Perhaps one of his most memorable accomplishments was traveling with the choir to Bern, Switzerland, where they performed at the International Music Festival.
Despite these many highlights, Kim’s proudest achievement remains deeply personal. “My greatest accomplishment is having the privilege of using music and the arts to bring the Word of God to life for our congregation,” he reflects.
For Kim, the true reward lies in the impact he’s had on his church and the broader community, all while sharing the love of Christ through the universal language of music. ◆

Gerald M. Morello Jr. and Morello Law Group are Downriver’s largest estate planning practice, handling both simple and complex matters. Consistently voted Downriver’s “Best of the Best” attorneys.
From law practice to legacy project, this restored building stands as a tribute to Downriver’s history and hardworking spirit
BY MEGAN MOORE
Operating out of the former Wyandotte Savings Bank building since 1995, Morello Law Group is bringing new life to a space that has long held significance in the community. Their location isn’t just a matter of convenience; instead it shows their commitment to both professional standards and the community they serve. The firm’s recent growth reflects not just legal skill, but a real understanding of its roots and mission. By restoring a local landmark and staying focused on the people around them, Morello Law Group shows that lasting impact happens where history, values, and service come together.
The story of Morello Law Group starts with building a practice, but has evolved to restoring a legacy. When business founder Gerald M. Morello Jr., better known as Jerry Jr., first envisioned renovating the former bank building on Biddle Ave.,
Continued on page C 2
he wasn’t just thinking about improving the firm’s office space. He saw potential to bring the building back to its former charm, honoring its architectural roots while creating a warm, professional environment for clients and staff alike.
The result is nothing short of stunning. Original details like marble floors, terracotta brick walls, limestone exteriors, and intricately designed plaster ceilings have been meticulously preserved and restored. These elements, many of which were hidden or covered over the years, now shine alongside seamlessly integrated modern amenities and technology. The fusion of old and new provides a unique atmosphere that reflects the firm’s respect for tradition but with an eye toward progress.
Morello’s vision extended beyond restoring beauty. It was about preserving a piece of Wyandotte’s identity. “This building is a symbol,” says sister and administrative assistant Carrie Varady. “The renovation isn’t just cosmetic – it’s a statement of appreciation for the community that’s supported our family and this firm.”
The most recent addition to the space is the new Learning Center, a one-of-a-kind room that speaks to the region’s history and its hard-working people. At the heart of the Learning Center is a striking print of Detroit Industry, North Wall, Diego Rivera’s famed 1933 fresco painting located at the Detroit Institute of Arts, celebrating the laborers
who built Detroit into a powerhouse of American industry. It’s also a fitting tribute to the Downriver community, many of whom contributed to the Arsenal of Democracy, and helping establish Detroit as the “Motor Capital of the World,” and whose legacy of resilience lives on today. “He has that Downriver work ethic,” Carrie states, “and as a result, he’s created this incredible place that’s just reflective of the community and its history and values.”
“There’s just something special about Wyandotte and Downriver,” Carrie says. “It’s one of those things – if you know, you know.”
But the Learning Center isn’t just a stunning testament to the community's work ethic; it’s functional. Designed as a versatile space, it will be used for internal training, legal seminars, business functions, and communityfocused events. It’s yet another way the firm is investing in the future of Wyandotte while staying grounded in its roots.
The evolution of Morello Law Group mirrors that of the building. What began as a modest practice in the early 1990s has grown into the largest law firm in the Downriver area, nearly doubling in size through renovation and expansion. With an unwavering commitment to excellence and service, the added space and resources allow for even more comprehensive assistance to clients across the region.
While Morello had the vision for the space, the effort of bringing that dream to reality through renovation was truly col-
laborative. Morello Law Group prioritized hiring local businesses and craftsmen. Among the many who contributed their expertise were Wilkie Construction, New Horizons Construction Services, Jerry’s Ace Hardware (a business started by Jerry Morello Sr. and celebrating their milestone 40th anniversary this year), Breco Interiors, Shaw Industries, Expert Mechanical Service, Gouth Sheet Metal, Lincoln Park Glass, Steve Jalaba AV Technology, The Lighthouse of Trenton, Oak Street Millworks, and Mans Lumber.
General Contractor Gary Wilkie played a pivotal role in the project, dedicating countless hours to historical research and handson oversight. His efforts ensured that every detail, from materials to finishes, aligned with the original design while meeting the needs of a modern law firm.
For Morello Law Group, the renovated building is more than just a workplace. It’s a symbol of perseverance, progress, and pride. It’s about honoring the past while shaping the future, brick by brick and case by case. And for the surrounding area, it stands as a beautiful example of what can be accomplished when vision, heritage, and the hard work of the Wyandotte and Downriver community come together. ◆
Morello Law Group’s Downriver office is located at 1800 Biddle Ave., Wyandotte. For more info visit morellolawgroup.com or call 734-281-6464.
Thank you to the local businesses and professionals who helped us restore the historic Wyandotte Savings Bank building. Your dedication, craftsmanship, and pride brought our vision to life. In fall 1984, Helen and Jerry Morello, Sr., made a decision that would not only change their lives but also eventually go on to positively impact the Wyandotte and Downriver community for decades. With four young children at home and a dream to build something of their own, the couple took a bold leap in purchasing a small neighborhood ACE hardware store. Jerry and Helen put all of their savings into Jerry’s ACE Hardware. It was a risk for the family of six, but Helen and Jerry Sr. were confident that they had the determination, grit, and faith in each other needed to see their business succeed.

Four decades of hard work, resilience, and local trust have built more than a busines s – they , ve built a community cornerstone
BY MEGAN MOORE
Jerry Sr.’s experience, skill, and natural talent for sales helped, too. At the time, he had already spent two decades in retail, starting at Hudson’s and eventually working in the paint department at Sears Roebuck & Co. Handy by nature and passionate about customer service, owning his own hardware store was a natural fit.
Prior to purchasing Jerry’s ACE Hardware, he and Helen had considered opening a lakeside rental resort, but fate and a for-sale sign led them to the storefront that would become a staple in the Wyandotte and Downriver community.
The early days were anything but easy. Jerry Sr. worked 15-16 hour days, arriving before dawn and staying long after closing to make upgrades and improvements to the store and its operations. Helen managed the book-
keeping while her four children were at school, often bringing along their dog, Sir Brutus, to keep her company at the store. After school and on weekends, the kids, Jerry Jr., Teresa, Carrie, and Gina, pitched in, too, inventorying shelves, helping with clean-up, and supporting however they could. It was a full family affair, and before long, nearly everyone in the community recognized the friendly faces of the Morello family, including Sir Brutus.
What set Jerry’s ACE apart, even in those formative years, was vision. At a time when there were still numerous small independent hardware stores as well as big box retailers nearby, Jerry Sr. imagined a one-stop shop for everything the neighborhood needed. He hired an amazing, dedicated staff, leaned into customer service, and formed relationships with local businesses and home-

owners alike. Slowly, his vision began to take shape.
As the community evolved, so did Jerry’s ACE. Jerry Sr.’s deep knowledge and friendly, hands-on approach earned him trust. Customers knew that when they walked through those doors they wouldn’t be left to wander aisles alone. If someone didn’t know the answer, they’d find someone who did – usually Jerry Sr. himself. Over the years, the store expanded its inventory and reputation, becoming a true staple in the community. Even though the Morello family lived in nearby Southgate, Wyandotte had become their second home.
In 2019, the legacy passed to the next generation as Jerry Morello Jr. took ownership. His parents, having poured decades into building the store’s foundation, were ready to retire. Fortunately, their son has not let their hard work fade. With Jerry Jr. at the helm, along with Dawn Moore, it’s store manager, and Rick Kaszyca, it’s ‘helpful hardware man’, Jerry’s ACE has continued to grow, with expanded offerings like seasonal products, outdoor equipment rentals, screen and window repair, and even decor. It’s no longer just a hardware store but a resource for the entire home and backyard.
Dawn has provided steady leadership and operational guidance and will celebrate 30 years of dedicated service at Jerry’s Ace this year. Rick, a Downriver Legend in the hardware industry, is the go-to guy for hardware and plumbing. He started working in hardware at the young age of 14 and has been with Jerry's ACE for more than 15 years. Customers will drive a long distance to see him or wait in line to ask him questions. It’s said, “If Rick doesn’t have an answer, there isn’t one!”
Familyfounded in 1984, Jerry,s ACE Hardware has grown into a trusted, communityfocused staple in Wyandotte.
When COVID-19 hit, and most stores closed or had curbside only service, Jerry’s ACE remained open to serve the community. Jerry’s ACE was an essential community support system during a time when people still needed tools, plumbing parts, and the reassurance of a familiar, helpful face. Longtime employees, many of whom were retirees or second-jobbers, were happy to help and played a crucial role in keeping the store running and customers cared for.
Now, as the store marks its 40th anniversary, we take a moment to reflect on Jerry’s ACE Hardware and the Morello family, appreciating the values that brought them here and that the family business still embodies today: hard work, resilience, and community. Though Helen and Jerry Sr. are modest about their suc-
cess, their children are eager to give them the credit they so richly deserve.
“They wouldn’t say it themselves,” said daughter Carrie, “but they’re incredibly proud. They built something lasting, not just for our family, but for the neighborhood and community.” Says Jerry, “Our parents taught us hard work, personal responsibility and service. We do our best at Jerry’s ACE to be faithful to these virtues while serving our community.”
From lean beginnings to a thriving, trusted business, Jerry’s ACE Hardware stands as a testament to what can be built with courage, commitment, and a whole lot of heart. Here’s to 40 years, the Morello family and staff, and community members who made it possible. ◆
