Thai handicrafts are the result of the seeds of wisdom that have been sown since ancient times. to create valuable contemporary works under the concept of “Today Life with BCG” SACIT Concept is a Product development project for commercial extension under the concept of “Today Life with BCG (Bio Circular and Green) “ through the operation of SACIT or The Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) that aims to promote developing Thailand’s craft skills and artistry in all dimensions sustainably, by creating competitiveness, opportunities for social equality, and growth in the quality of life that is friendly to the environment. Developed to inherit and develop Thai artisans’ craft skills to remain intact over time. Project management by Silpakorn University, in cooperation with 10 professional designers, and 20 craftsmen, the result of joint efforts, demonstrates fantastic talent and creativity.

A beautiful blend of traditional craft skill and modern design. through 40 works that reflect the styles and unique personalities of creators from 3 groups, namely

A person who preserved the knowledge and craft skills of traditional Thai wisdom from the ancestors to the present. Master craftsmen with experience and expertise create exquisite workmanship with a distinctive appearance that retains conventional wisdom’s value.

A person who aims to develop products to build upon traditional wisdom for today’s generation to be aware and access precious arts and crafts.

Wood and Squirrels represent the interconnectedness of naturally mutually beneficial beings by bringing natural remnants of old wood. Let us bring to life the meaning and value of existence by carving a squirrel that represents the creatures that live in nature and represent abundance.

Technique :

There are 2 types of wood carving; bas-relief (chip - carving), where the embossed pattern is not very deep and is done with a chisel and a hammer without turning the workpiece back and forth. And in high-relief wood carving techniques, the wood is carved that almost completely floats in 3D.

Process :

The primary production process consists of 3 parts. The first step is to find the old wood scraps that are no longer used in making furniture or other works to select the parts to be cut. The second step is to carefully carve patterns into the wood, and the final step is painting to increase durability and make the design attractive and contemporary.

Problems caused by waste from the fishing industry destroy nature and the local ecosystem. The designer uses these materials in upcycling design process and combines them with local crafts, such as knotting nets and landing nets, to create environmentally friendly products while reducing waste and marine debris.

Upcycling scraps and waste with local craft techniques such as knotting and tying traws.

Process :

The primary production process consists of 3 parts: first, function and shape design, ready-to-use body; second, start the process. Selection of waste materials from the fishing industry from fisheries. Bring a string into a beautiful product with functions for daily use, and step 3 assembly to complete the workpiece.

Instruction : Table lamp installation should be mainly considered as user’s behaviour. The position in which it installed helps to make it more comfortable. You can remove the decoration set (floating net) if neccessary.

Dan Kwian Pottery has a unique method of firing in a brick kiln with a temperature of over 1,200 degrees Celsius, where the pottery stands for five to seven days. This method allows the ash to glaze and melt, giving it the unique glossy natural glaze that is an outstanding product of Dan Kwian Pottery.

Designers have added more ideas to the craftsmanship that creates works through art and community wisdom from embroidery skills. Development in colour determination and elements of the details that the community has already done to change from the original pattern on the floor And the embroidery often competes for the attention of each other until the work is not attractive. Developed by sending scrap fabric left over from the primary product production system. Along with a selection of second-hand sneakers and bags that can be bought in the market, It's not a new product. Based on the concept of Upcycled Design, further delivering to the community. Selecting the colour of the scrap fabric to be a Monotone colour scheme to make the resulting work have a colour that is not scattered to make it different and more perfect than what was previously done. Encourage needlepoint embroidery designs to show their potential better and different.

Technique :

Hand embroidered in a chain pattern. The embroidery consists of handwritten lines and embroidery art that form a dimension on a piece of fabric. It has a distinctive identity by creating a design.

Process : The production process consists of 2 parts. Firstly, the products that are leftovers, residuals or inventory that are not in demand in the market are used as a frame that can be decorated with embroidery techniques. The second step is the selection of scraps of fabric that will be part of the work floor to have colours that do not clash and destroy the interest in the embroidery pattern

To solve this problem and save transportation costs, the structure of the lantern was creatively redesigned so that it could be folded or disassembled.

Narathiwat province has abundant natural food sources such as the giant freshwater prawn which can also be farmed professionally, and the Pluang Chompoo (Tor douronensis), which is a high-profitable commercial fish in the southern 3 provinces of Thailand. Therefore, these two identities were used as inspirational design motif for the new collection.

Technique :

Fine hand embroidery with identical unique Narathiwat pattern design.

Process :

The 3 main production steps are: first, designing the two freshwater animal patterns; second, selecting fabric scraps or used garments to match the designed patterns and finely sewing them on by hand; third, sewing to assemble a whole bag.

Inspiration

These accessory sets and home decor collection were developed from the Kanflora brand paper garland, originally sold for more than 10 years. In order to reach new markets and customers, the new designs were created to achieve the new way of use and new materials that break the previous product limitations. The redesign focuses on keeping the product identity but solving the customers’ pain point and being different. Natural materials are still used, but no longer made of paper, but cotton, natural dyes and waterproof coating with egg proteins. Therefore, this garland is not just a paper garland, but becomes an indispensable home accessory and creative household item.

Process :

The manufacturing process of this collection is divided into 3 parts: first, designing patterns for the garland with differentiated functional beauty that is still modern; second, dyeing with natural colors such as butterfly pea blue and turmeric yellow, then cutting into pieces to rearrange as pattern design; and third, waterproof coating with egg proteins and cutting off thread remnants to finish the work.
