A TASTE of RELAXATION By: Molly Galliher

W

hen people think about wine from California, most think of places like Napa and Sonoma. What many don’t know is that just 30 minutes from downtown San Diego is a beautiful Mediterranean-style working vineyard in the hills of Lakeside. Trevi Hills Winery, operated by San Diego native Michael Larrañaga, offers a peaceful escape just outside of the city. What is unique about this vineyard is that it provides the chance for community members to grow their own grapes and get a taste of the winemaking process.

Michael, both a sommelier and winemaker, has given many the opportunity to live their dreams of owning a vineyard with the help of an experienced professional. Michael’s life-long passion for wine has given the San Diego community a fantastic local escape.

Q: What is Trevi Hills?

A: Trevi Hills is twofold. There is Trevi Hills Winery, a standalone winery that I’ve operated for about nine years. We are the closest working winery to San Diego and opened a tasting room about two and a half years ago. Then there is also the neighborhood of Trevi Hills. It is a Tuscan-style community that the winery has partnered with to help residents grow their own grapes.

Q: How did you get started in the winemaking industry?

A: I started studying wine when I was 17, working at La Fontainebleau. They put me in charge of a bunch of wine cellars, and I knew nothing about wine because I was 17, so they sent me up to Napa and Sonoma to study, and I’ve been doing it ever since. I was kind of thrown into it, but it was fun. When I was little, my parents used to take us camping up in wine country, so in a way, I guess I was born into it.

Q: How did you become a sommelier? What is the process behind that?

A: I am in the French Court of Master Sommeliers, which is the oldest version of sommeliers in the world. It is a French-style that basically has nothing to do with winemaking. It means I’ve been trained in French service and libation with an emphasis on wine. There are four levels, and Master Sommeliers are few and far between. You learn French table service and about multiple different types of alcohol, including single

malt scotch, bourbons, whiskeys, tequilas, beers, cigars, and wine. It’s a little bit of everything. Basically, sommeliers will taste multiple different wines from around the world and critique for the most part while winemakers actually make their own wine.

They hate sommeliers because they’re the critics, so I’m kind of at war with myself. But, on the other hand, I get to critique myself.

Q: What goes into winemaking?

A: A lot of weeks without sleep. It’s fun because you’re part chemist, part mechanic, part inventor, and part farmer.

From planting to nurturing to making sure the growing season is going well and then taking it into the back room and producing the wine. You have to know the lab work, yeast counts, and sugars, and along with all of that, you have to be able to make wine that not only you like but will be palatable for other people.

That’s where the sommelier side of me comes in because you know multiple types of palates and peoples’ styles.

Q: What is your favorite part about your job?

A: Drinking wine! Really though, there’s nothing like walking the vineyards every morning. At 6:30 in the morning, I talk to the vines, and really, they do all the work. We just have to move the grapes from one place to another.

The whole style of winemaking is in the vines, and to be out there in nature early in the morning or late at night is so peaceful and serene.

Q: What made you start a winery in San Diego?

A: I came to the San Diego vineyards much later in

life. I was busy in Sonoma, Napa, and Italy before when I got a call and was asked to take a look at some vines in Lakeside. It was love at first sight. I was born and raised here in La Jolla, so I got to come home. I get to surf in the morning and play in the vines in the afternoon. I never knew this was out here, and when I saw it, there’s a beautiful view of the ocean. It’s so beautiful, and I feel like I’m back where I belong.

Q: What is the Trevi Hills Vineyard Cooperative?

A: Trevi Hills Winery is a standalone working winery, not a clubhouse. Homes started going in across the street, and we had an idea to connect them. When a homeowner puts up a home, we

offer to put vines on their property. I manage it and teach the homeowner how to do essential maintenance like clipping and pruning, but they don’t have to do it because I’ll take care of it.

We manage these vines, harvest them, and bring them back to the winery, where we turn them into their own private label wine. It’s a great thing for the community. All of the homeowners come out and help during harvest, and they all love it. Nobody has a bad day in a vineyard- it’s so peaceful.

Q: What gave you the idea to connect the neighborhood to the winery?

A: Trevi Hills is a Tuscanstyle vineyard. We’re in a Mediterranean environment

and the neighborhood being built is also Tuscan-inspired.

It seemed so natural. If I’m growing grapes, why can’t they? So far, almost every homeowner has put a vineyard on their property. We average about 175 vines per home. It’s so much fun.

Q: Do you have any advice for those looking to get involved in winemaking or in one of these types of communities?

A: If you’re going to get involved, do it because you love it. Becoming a sommelier or winemaker involves a lot of hours. Vineyards are so much fun, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for some peace in their lives. It is a great stress reliever.

Q: What is your favorite part about the San Diego community?

A: San Diego is my home.

I’ve traveled all over, and some of the greatest people in the world are right here.

Everybody is happy, carefree, and will bend over backward to help you. You can meet so many people by going out and doing things.

In the Trevi Hills community, all of the neighbors are friends. They all have vines and always come to help each other and are constantly going on walks and having barbecues. It’s like one big party up here.
