Hi North County Friends!! I’m Jaclyn James, a local business owner, wife and mama living in San Elijo Hills. Most days you’ll find me on Instagram, sharing home, food and lifestyle tips & tricks.

As we head into the holidays, home decor and festive food is top of mind. Here are a few of my favorite home decorating tips to make your home feel festive and cozy this season.

1. To create a cohesive look throughout your house, select a holiday color scheme. This year I’m incorporating greens, white, black and brass for a more modern look.

2. Incorporate a few pieces of fresh

greenery. Check Trader Joe’s for boxwood wreaths and cedar garland. It’s a great way to add the smell of the season to your home.

— you don’t need every corner of your home to scream Christmas. Focus on creating a feeling of coziness throughout your home that makes you smile.

Here are a few helpful “rules of thumb” you can use to determine just how much decor you need: ▶ GARLAND — to swag garland on your bannister, purchase about 1.5x the total length of your railing. ▶ TREE DECORATING: you need about 100 lights and 20 ornaments — per foot of your tree height. NOTE: When buying a pre-lit tree the “100 lights per foot” is a great way to determine if the tree will really sparkle.

3. Use “everyday items” you already own

and add a touch of holiday cheer. For example, instead of buying a “Christmas” vase, try using a plain white, black or gold vase and add lush wintry greens.

4. TWINKLE LIGHTS — a must for 2020.

For $6, Target has LED battery-operated lights — it’s a great way to spruce up decor you already own. I’ve added lights to every wreath and piece of garland in my home.

5. CANDLES — scented, tapers and

everything in between. On every holiday table I design, you’ll find tons of taper candles. Candles are an inexpensive way to add lots of warmth, ambiance and holiday scent to your home.

holiday stress It’s the hap-happiest season of all...or so the song says, but if we aren’t careful it can become the most stressful season of all. As we approach the 2020 holiday season and the many challenges this year has already brought, here are some tips from Jamie Pyatt, LCSW, and life coach Guy Balogh, on how to end this year with peace, joy and healthy boundaries.

1. Find Your “Why.” WHY do you want the holidays to be the “happiest season of all” and what matters most to you during this time? Discuss what you and your household members want from the holidays, and then make it happen. You may be surprised by the traditions that are “must haves.” Focus your energy on those high-value experiences that satisfy your WHY and give yourself a pass on the rest.

2. Set healthy boundaries and be intentional. It can be stressful to buy gifts, see loved ones and gather with friends. Take a moment to think through who you’d really like to see during your time off.

Maybe this year you stay home and enjoy the break by yourself or with your immediate family.

Communicate what you decide and respect the wishes of others.

Establishing healthy boundaries while planning your celebration helps set clear expectations for everyone. Whatever you do, be intentional and choose connections and activities that honor your WHY. Taking time to savor those intentional choices will make the season meaningful and more memorable.

The holiday season is upon us and if we’re not careful, extra pounds will also be upon us before we know it! With that in mind, we reached out to our resident health guru, Lisa Druxman, the founder of Fit4MOM. She gave us some healthy tips to help us get through the holiday season:

1. Go to the holiday table with a plan. Let’s face

it, we all know what types of foods will be on the holiday dinner table. Choose ahead of time which foods are important and which foods we can do without.

2. Don’t go to the table telling people we’re “eat-

ing healthy this holiday season.” There’s no need to bring attention to our food choices. We’re more likely to have success if we keep it low-key.

3. Fill the plate heavily with vegetables, fruits and lower fat fare.

4. Don’t say yes to every treat and tasty morsel.

Choose wisely and carefully.

5. When cooking, try not to nibble throughout the

day. All those little bites add up.

6. It’s a good time of year to try some new lighter recipes. Use high quality, fresh ingredients and the foods will taste great.

7. Offer to bring a dish to a holiday get-together.

Bring something you know you can fill up on without the guilt.

8. Moderate drinking at the holidays. Alcohol slows down

our metabolism and impairs our good judgment. Try a wine spritzer instead of champagne.

9. Have a healthy snack before a holiday meal. Don’t go to

a party on an empty stomach.

10. Get exercise. Taking a walk before or after the holiday meals will help increase metabolism. When we take care of ourselves regularly with exercise, our desire for unhealthy foods tends to decrease.

11. If at first we don’t succeed, don’t throw in the towel.

Most of us tend to eat out of control after we give in to that initial temptation. Don’t assume that because we gave into that piece of cake that we now have to try every type of pie on the table.

Finally, remember that the key to overall health is to eat healthy overall. This year, make your focus on giving and not what you’re taking in.

Holiday French Toast - C'est Bon!

Overnight Walnut French Toast with Cranberry Walnut Ginger Compote TOTAL TIME: 1 hour ♦ SERVINGS: 12

For many families, spending special moments with loved ones feels more important than ever this year. Whether you’re spending the holidays with family or inviting them for a virtual call from afar, you can plan ahead to enjoy the same dishes even without being at the same table.

Tap into family favorites like these seasonal sweets that include California Walnuts for rich, holiday-worthy flavor.

Overnight Walnut French Toast with Cranberry Walnut Ginger Compote offers a tart-sweet combination perfect for a holiday brunch and allows you to prep the night before and simply pop in the oven when you wake up.

CRANBERRY WALNUT GINGER COMPOTE: 1/2 cup California Walnuts 2 cups cranberries 1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1 orange, zest only OVERNIGHT WALNUT FRENCH TOAST: 8 slices Texas Toast or 1-inch thick slices French bread 1/4 cup butter, melted, plus additional for baking dish, divided 2 1/2 cups milk or walnut milk 1/2 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon 6 eggs Preheat oven to 350 F. Place walnuts on baking sheet and toast 8 minutes. Remove from heat and chop coarsely.

TO MAKE OVERNIGHT WALNUT FRENCH TOAST: Preheat oven to 350 F. Place bread on baking sheet and bake 5 minutes, or until lightly toasted on outside but still soft on inside. Butter 13-by-9-inch baking dish.

In large bowl, whisk milk, sugar, 1/4 cup butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon and eggs.

Dip each bread slice in mixture and let soak about 15 seconds on each side. Place in prepared baking dish, overlapping slices slightly, if necessary.

Cover and refrigerate a few hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Bake 50-60 minutes, or until golden brown and somewhat firm to touch. Serve immediately topped with Cranberry Walnut Ginger Compote.

Omaha Steaks Butcher’s Cut Filet Mignons (5-6 ounces each), thawed teaspoons kosher salt tablespoons coarsely ground black pepper tablespoon vegetable oil tablespoons butter, divided cup brandy or cognac cup cream tablespoon Dijon mustard

Season steak with salt and pepper. Press seasoning into meat to create even coating.

In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat vegetable oil and 1 tablespoon butter until just smoking. Add steak and sear 4 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Once cooked to desired doneness, transfer steak to cutting board and tent with foil to rest.

Celebrate the season and create long-lasting memories this year by serving tasteful main courses centered around tender cuts of beef.

Reduce heat to medium and add brandy to skillet. Allow to cook down about 1 minute while stirring to scrape off any browned bits from bottom of pan. Once brandy reduces by half, add cream, Dijon mustard and remaining butter; continue cooking until mixture begins to reduce and thicken, 5-7 minutes.

Slice steaks against grain and top with sauce.

Sweet & Savory Tart

Savory Leek, Raisin and Ricotta Tart Servings: 10 1 1 3 1 3 15 3 3 1

pastry (9 inches, not in pie shell) tablespoon olive oil large leeks, chopped cup California golden raisins ounces diced smoked ham ounces low-fat ricotta cheese eggs cups Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, grated cup chopped fresh basil or arugula

Preheat oven to 375 F. Roll out pastry dough and press into 9-inch springform or tart pan. Bake 10 minutes.

In large nonstick skillet, heat olive oil. Add leeks and saute until browned, about 10 minutes. Add raisins and ham; cook 5 minutes.

In bowl, combine ricotta cheese, eggs and ParmigianoReggiano cheese; whisk well. Add leek mixture and basil; stir well.

Spoon ricotta mixture into tart shell. Bake 40 minutes or until puffed, golden and set.

Versatile recipes that make mealtime a cinch for busy families are one easy way to free up time for moments with loved ones.

This Savory Leek, Raisin and Ricotta Tart is a perfect example of a dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, as a snack or even if your family gets a craving for a breakfast-for-dinner swap.

This recipe is made using California raisins. Dried in the California sunshine, they come by their sweetness naturally as a fat-free, cholesterol-free, low-sodium ingredient that can also be enjoyed on their own as a snack that packs nutritional value with 6% of the daily value for potassium and 7% of the daily value for fiber in each serving.

AT THE HOLIDAYS — UNLESS IT'S GINGERBREAD-SPICED PECANS?!

Gingerbread Pecans Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Yield: 2 cups (6 servings) 1 2 2 2 2 1

large egg white, beaten cups raw pecan halves tablespoons granulated sugar tablespoons light brown sugar teaspoons gingerbread spice blend pinch salt

Preheat oven to 300 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.

In large bowl, use fork to whisk beaten egg until frothy.

Add pecans and stir until coated. Sprinkle pecans with granulated sugar, brown sugar, gingerbread spice and salt. Stir to coat evenly. Spread pecans in even layer on prepared baking sheet.

Bake pecans 40 minutes, stirring halfway through. Allow pecans to cool completely.

Note: Pecans can be stored in airtight container for up to four days.

Brownies with a Holiday Twist SPICE UP THIS HOLIDAY SEASON WITH

Reindeer Pecan Brownies Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Yield: 20 brownies 1 1 1 2 1 1/2 1/2 1 1/4 20 40 20 1/4

Nonstick cooking spray stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted tablespoon pecan or canola oil cup, plus 2 tablespoons, granulated sugar large eggs teaspoon vanilla extract cup all-purpose flour cup cocoa powder teaspoon espresso powder (optional) teaspoon kosher salt raw pecan halves, cut in half candy eyeballs red chocolate candies cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray mini muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray.

In large bowl, whisk melted butter, oil and sugar until well combined. Add eggs and vanilla extract; beat until mixture is thick and pale in color, about 1 minute.

Sift in flour and cocoa powder. Add espresso powder, if desired, and salt. Using rubber spatula, fold dry ingredients into butter mixture until just combined. Batter should be thick.

Using 1-tablespoon cookie scoop, transfer batter to prepared mini muffin tin. Bake 13-15 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out mostly clean, with some lingering crumbs.

Add chocolate chips to heat-proof bowl; microwave until smooth and melted. Pour melted chocolate into sandwich bag and cut off small portion of one corner to use as tip.

Use melted chocolate to “glue” on pecan antlers, candy eyeballs and red candy noses to brownies.

Allow chocolate to set before transferring brownies to airtight container (Brownies will stay fresh up to 3 days)

Want to begin 2021 with that 'fresh start' feeling? Begin with purging your clothes.

Getting rid of your own clothes is often the easiest place to start because the decisions you make don’t require input from someone else.

The faster the decision, the faster the results. Seeing results quickly will motivate you to keep going and build the momentum needed to purge other parts of your home.

Here are my favorite tips and tricks to say goodbye to those clothes you don’t like or wear and hello to the clothes you love: TIP #1: Sort your clothes into yes, no and maybe piles. Giving yourself a maybe pile will help you spend less time hemming and hawing between yes and no. Start to sort through your maybe pile either right away or within 7 days.

TIP #2: Make your yes, no and maybe decisions in ten seconds or less. A walk down memory lane, stirring up emotions will only stall your efforts to accomplish your goal of purging your cloths. The longer you think about it, the less of a chance you’ll finish.

TIP #3: When saying yes to keeping something, ask yourself these three questions: ▶ Does it fit well? ▶ Does it feel good? ▶ Does it look good?

Let’s be honest, if it doesn’t fit, feel or look good you will always choose something else to wear. The only reason you’re holding on to those clothes is for negative reasons that don’t serve you.

That’s just not good for your Feng Shui. But, that’s for another article.

TIP #4: Use large, strong trash bags to contain the clothes you’ll be getting rid of. It will make it easier to transport them to their new home.

TIP #5: Decide ahead of time where your donated clothes will go. Planning in advance will make your clothes leave the house faster. The faster your clothes leave your home the faster you will feel the “2021 Fresh Start Feeling!

hen you first discover these images are paintings you can’t believe it. The detail is incredibly intricate. When the shock of learning the images are paintings starts to subside you feel yourself being drawn into the canvas. The artist, Purita Sy-Quia, is a Carlsbad mom with an international following. We’re lucky to have her in our community and we wanted to share her story with you.

PURITA, PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF? I am the youngest of four children. I was born and raised In Manila, Philippines. I got married when I was 27 years old and moved to New York in 1994 with my husband, Dondi.

We then moved to Cincinnati, OH where my two girls were born. After 12 years there, we moved here to Carlsbad. My oldest, Jamie, is now 25 and lives in Los Angeles. My youngest, Ana, is 21 and is a senior in college. Although I’ve occasionally painted professionally throughout the years, I've been fortunate enough to be able to devote most, if not all, of my time to being what I love most...a mom.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU START PAINTING? WHEN DID IT BECOME MORE THAN A HOBBY? I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to draw or paint.

Although she didn’t do it professionally, my mother was a prolific artist and an art collector. I was surrounded with art all my life.

Sometime in college, I started focusing on portraits just for fun.

A friend commissioned a painting after seeing a portrait I painted of my grandmother. That’s how it all started. I was, at first, unsure about painting professionally but my mother encouraged me to pursue it. I have my mom to thank for always believing in me and encouraging me.

HOW MANY PAINTINGS HAVE YOU BEEN COMMISSIONED TO PAINT?

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION?

IT MUST BE GRATIFYING. HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SELL A PAINTING?

I get it everywhere, really. I follow many artists and I am constantly perusing instagram and other media outlets. I get a lot of my inspiration from artists around the world — especially Filipino artists. With technology, we are fortunate nowadays to be able to get inspiration and learn from different artists anywhere, anytime.

It is gratifying for sure but it’s always bittersweet to part with my paintings. I think most artists know exactly how I feel. You get used

HOW MUCH TIME GOES INTO EACH PIECE? I wish I could say just a few days! But because my style is very detailed and requires a lot of time, one painting usually takes at least a month.

YOUR ARTWORK IS MESMERIZING. IT IS SO DETAILED AND HARD TO IMAGINE THAT IT IS ALL DONE BY HAND! HOW DO YOU DO IT!?

Oh thank you for your kind words. I just really enjoy it! When I paint, I quickly slip into the zone and lose track of time. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and love doing detailed work.

WHAT TYPE OF MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES DO YOU USE? I work almost exclusively with oil on canvas. I like both Gamblin and Windsor & Newton oil paints. I keep things pretty basic. I use walnut oil if I need to make my paint more fluid and Gamsol mineral spirits to thin my paint and clean my brushes. To achieve all the detail, I use really small, fine brushes. I wear them out pretty quickly and go through a lot of brushes for each painting. Once the paint is completely dry, I always put a couple of layers of Gamvar satin varnish to finish it off.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE FUTURE FOR YOUR ARTWORK? WHAT’S YOUR VISION? Now that I have more time to myself, I just want to keep having fun painting.

Fortunately, I have a lot of commissions lined up now. I also just started producing and selling archival ” limited edition” prints of a select few of my paintings.

They are reproductions using the highest quality fine art printing method. I do not mass-produce my paintings and only sell 10 prints of each. Aside from wanting to be able to share my work with more people, I wanted my two girls to have a piece of me by saving a print for each of them.

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER ASPIRING MOM CREATORS & ARTISTS? Just keep painting! Have fun but, like most things, painting requires practice and discipline. Remember that art is subjective and you will not please everyone, so paint what makes you happy!

HOW COULD SOMEONE PURCHASE A PAINTING? Most of my paintings are commissioned. All original paintings I have done are with their respective owners now. I do, however, have signed archival “limited edition fine art prints” for sale.

HOW DID YOU TURN YOUR HOBBY INTO A BUSINESS? It was absolutely a hobby! I started it as a way to channel my anxiety and depression into a more positive outlet. In fact, my business name, Ataraxia (at-uh-rack-see-uh) Handmade, is named for the feeling of being free from anxiety. It was important to honor that because it is a huge part of my life.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? This is a super-hard one for me. I’m inspired by all kinds of things! The colors in a TV show my son’s watching, a shape I see on Pinterest, mindless creating that just kind of comes together. I take little pieces of everyday life and mush it together to create my pieces.

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME WHEN STARTING YOUR BUSINESS? I suffer from Imposter Syndrome. I have had to be pushed out of my comfort zone so many times just to get where I am. I am constantly saying to myself, “Why would anyone want to buy from you, ya amateur?” Thankfully, I have some great people in my life that quiet that voice just enough for me to move forward.

CHERYL: THINGS TO DO

We’d like to thank Cheryl Meyer for reviewing a fun day trip for kids. Cheryl Meyer has lived in San Elijo Hills for 19 years. She and her husband, Mike, have two beautiful children: Addy, nine, and Benji, four. She’s a stay-at-home mom, but before that worked in marketing and owned her own jewelry design business.

THIS IS HER STORY 2020 being the year of the pandemic and social distancing, I knew I was not going to be able to plan a party for my daughter’s ninth birthday. I recently found a private tour of Sugar Sweet Farm in Encinitas. Your small group may experience the farm, complete with a private masked-guided tour, and meet farm animals, up close and personal, for $120 for an hour and a half.

When we arrived at Sugar Sweet Farm, we felt we had escaped to the countryside. A “Happy Birthday” banner was hung for my daughter over a graceful pergola of vines shading a picnic table adorned with tablecloth and flowers. Our tour guide, Raelynn, met us and the first animal to greet us was a beautiful brown bunny named “Honey Bunny.”

Next, we entered the goat and llama section. One friendly goat nibbled on the hem of my dress and started chewing on my purse! We learned that llamas are the “watchdogs” of the farm, protecting the other animals from predators like coyotes and bobcats.

From there, we entered the “nursery,” where two adorable baby goats; a girl named Tinkerbell, and a boy named Lincoln (Tink & Link). Both of my kids fed the baby goats while their “babysitter” llama, named Butterfly, looked on.

We then visited the equine area and got to scratch behind the ears of Gabriella the donkey, and pet two miniature horses, Starbuck and Ladybug. Gus, a gorgeous Holsteiner horse at 17.2 hands tall, greeted us, along with Princess, a quarter horse who does the pony rides during Sugar Sweet Farm's camps for kids, held in the summer.

On our last stop, we met Major Tom the turkey and his wife, Dolly Pardon.

Our tour ended at the picnic table. I brought birthday cupcakes and Raelynn gave us bags to collect fruit from the trees.

It was a wonderful birthday experience for life in this socially distanced time!

HOW MOM KAREN FERNANDEZ

makes learning fun

Karen Fernandez is an educator, author and homeschool mom. She has taught young readers for over 30 years in California and early literacy is her passion. Her personal mantra is that reading and writing should be easy and fun for children. She loves sharing reading and writing tips with parents who are the first and best teachers kids have.

Karen holds a Master’s degree in Education and is a Reading Recovery Teacher. Her tactile alphabet book ABC Trace and Say was the winner of the Moonbeam Children’s 2014 Gold Medal for early literacy and winner of the prestigious Mom’s Choice 2015 Gold Medal for reading.

BACKGROUND: I started teaching in the early 1990s

when there was an abundance of money for teacher training, especially in the area of early literacy. I taught kindergarten, first grade and reading for six years in an inner city school that had enormous poverty. Children often came to kindergarten without any preschool skills and therefore struggled as beginning readers. I took part in a three-year training program out of New Zealand on early literacy during this time and went back to college to get my Reading Recovery Certificate. Next, I worked in Poway School District where I taught four years as a Reading Recovery Teacher and kindergarten/first grade teacher. I also mentored new teachers and helped create a district-wide literacy assessment program. Moving closer to home, I taught Kindergarten in Carlsbad School District for two years and then had a baby girl. When my daughter started school I became a reading tutor in the Encinitas School District. In 2004 I published my tactile alphabet book to help parents give their kids a head start on letter sounds and letter formation. I still tutor kids privately and speak about the importance of early reading intervention at schools and conferences.

IDEA TO CREATE BOOK: BOOK : It was during my early teach-

ing years that I was trained to use multisensory teaching to help young students learn letters and numbers. I used sheets of sandpaper with the letters and numbers written on them so students could trace them and feel how letters were correctly formed. I also used shaving cream and chocolate pudding on painting paper for kids to trace letters and numbers, and salt and sugar trays for them to trace as well — anything to help kids remember letter sounds and how the letters were made. When my daughter was learning her letters, I created an alphabet book out of cardstock and glued sandpaper letters on each page so she could trace the letters. I knew I should be providing

daily tactile opportunities for her to practice making letters with salt, sand, paint, pudding, etc. On the days when that didn’t happen I used the book I created. She loved it and I loved that she fully engaged in hands-on learning. I knew parents needed something easy like this to help their own kids learn letter sounds and letter formation BEFORE they started kindergarten. Learning to read and write is a birth to age 9 journey. So I created my alphabet book to put excellent, researched reading training in the hands of parents.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE CREATING BOOK: My biggest

challenge when creating ABC Trace and Say was finding a way to make it tactile. It took months of research before I found the company that would make my book not only an alphabet book that taught correct letter formation and letter sounds but one that was tactile so that kids could FEEL the letters as they traced them. I wanted it to be a hands-on, multisensory learning experience for children. I also had a challenge finding a publisher who wanted to publish it with the tactile component. Most only wanted my book without the tactile letters because it was too expensive for them to replicate. I chose to self- publish because the multisensory part was what engaged kids and set the book apart. My newest book, 123 Trace and Say, is a farm-themed number and shape tactile book for young learners and will be out soon.

ADVICE: For moms who want to have a side hustle or create a niche job or product — just do it! Jump in and get started because there will never be a perfect time and life will always happen and something will always come up. I have had slow times when it was difficult to allocate the time I wanted to my books and times when I could push through and get a ton done. But even on my worst days I am glad I took a chance and created and published my idea. I love that it helps kids and helps parents help kids become readers and writers!

One of a Kind Designs I’m Tiffany Camejo, founder of One of a Kind! I live in San Diego with my husband and teenage daughter, Kayla. I specialize in creating epoxy-resin art and jewelry. All of my art is nature-inspired, specifically ocean and floral themes. Being One of a Kind, I always strive to find unique pieces to turn into art.

When I first began creating resin art and jewelry back in 2019, I was having so much fun creating art that I had no intention of selling any of it. It wasn’t until friends began asking if they could buy my products that I considered selling them. I felt so insecure about sharing my work but hearing their positive feedback filled my heart.

When the quarantine hit, I wanted to keep selling so I opened an Etsy store and with every new order my passion grew, which also encouraged me to sign up for my first craft show. It was so successful that my husband decided we should rent a retail space in Local Niche Mission Valley Handmade Collective.

Now, after only a few months, I have already participated in over ten artisan markets and I am now in five retail stores: Local Niche Mission Valley & UTC, Adore Boutique Carlsbad Village & The Forum Carlsbad, & Di Torr in Hillcrest.

After working in restaurants for 20+ years, starting a business from scratch was a challenge. I created the art and still had to build my brand, set up an online store, take photos and write product descriptions. The vendor markets were also new to me. Aside from selling Girl Scout cookies with my daughter, I had no idea how to be a successful vendor. My daughter and I bonded over the business and she was a huge help with everything from marketing to building displays.

I am grateful for my support system. I would not be where I am today without the support from family, friends and fellow artists and I’ve even learned to take time for myself, focus on personal development and adopt a wellness routine.

My business has sparked a family affair. My daughters’ entrepreneurial spirit has been ignited and she now sells her own jewelry designs. She also manages my social media accounts. My husband has even collaborated with me on pieces, using his laser engraver.

I was born in Panama and raised in New York by a hardworking single mom who came to America to give her children a better life.

I’m a mom of three girls and a grandma to a beautiful granddaughter. I have worked with seniors and autistic children for years. I love cooking, traveling and, most of all, fashion and shopping.

I was blessed to meet Daniel and Tylor Summers, who were a step ahead of the game and opened Local Niche in Mission Valley, an outdoor mall allowing vendors and local artists to stay open. Then I met the owner of Adore Boutique and joined that collective team.

My passion for shopping is where my entrepreneurial dreams came from. I had a strong desire to be my own boss. Helping women feel beautiful and confident and helping to find the right outfit for the right occasion is my passion.

I attended many trade shows and fashion events. Speaking with other vendors helped me learn the latest trends. My love for God, shopping and fashion has made for a successful business. I am also thankful to have my best friend and my daughter join me in this venture.

ADVICE TO OTHER MOMS? Follow your passion. It's easy to want to be a boss babe, making money, but you can get burned out and lose interest. It’s so easy to stay motivated when you’re following your passion or dream. Don’t overthink it, know you may have challenges, just don’t give up.

Don’t be afraid to get help and also help others. Remember, family and teamwork really makes the dream work!

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? COVID has been my biggest challenge. Five days before our grand opening COVID-19 shut us down.

Having spent so much time and money building the store only to have it shut down suddenly was hard. The fashion industry stopped.

No products were being exported and fashion shows were cancelled so there were no trends to follow and no events or malls to sell from.

A: It’s possible. My best advice is to lock in a historically low

rate now while you can. If rates go up there is nothing you can do. Rates are incredibly low. Take advantage of it while you can!

California will have great options with 15%-25% down payment.

There are great loans that are fixed for 3, 5, 7, and 10 years all with rates in the mid to high 3’s. There are also options to amortize over 30 or 40 years and interest only options for lower payments and higher cash flow.
