Summers here are so much better than I’ve experienced elsewhere. There is ALWAYS something to do. From festivals to local farmers' markets —Virginia, you know how to show a good time. Just recently I took in the CoVa Battle of the Burgers at the Virginia Aviation Field (special thanks to Melone Hatley P.C for the invite!). Man, there was some good food at the event. I voted for Kelly's Tavern's burger (Spicy Hawaiian Burger) — a wonderful delight to my taste buds! Add in a day at the beach with friends watching the sunset...yep... we are “living the dream.” Thank you, Virginia, for letting me call this place home!

History on the Tradition of Setting Off Fireworks

As we are still a new publication, we’re working out the kinks.

We hope to get this out to you earlier each month so you can get the most out of each issue. Our founder, Michelle Westberry, is tirelessly working toward perfection (while still being human)!

Regardless of when this issue hits your mailbox, we thought it would be fun to dig into the traditions and facts about the 4th of July holiday.

On America's first Fourth of July celebration in 1777, fireworks were one color — orange. There were no elaborate sparkles, no red, white and blue stars — nothing more than a few glorified explosions in the sky.

As it turns out, although we've been lighting fireworks for the last 2000 years or so, modern fireworks were only invented in the 1830s. So what were they like before then? When Henry VII had fireworks at his wedding in 1486, how did they look? How have fireworks and the science behind them evolved throughout history?

200 BC — 800 AD: THE BIRTH OF FIREWORKS Like many inventions, firecrackers fireworks were created by accident — and in the search for immortality. Around 200 BC, the Chinese unintentionally invented firecrackers by tossing bamboo into fire, but it took another thousand years before true fireworks came alive. Around 800 AD, an alchemist mixed sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrate (a food preservative) hoping to find the secret to eternal life; Instead, the mixture caught fire and gunpowder was born! When the powder was packed into bamboo or paper tubes and lit on fire, history had its first fireworks!

A fireworks show in 800 AD would be unlike anything we see today.

Paper fireworks were used to scare evil spirits or to celebrate weddings and births and were simply thrown onto a fire, not blasted into the air.

There were no added colors, so a "fireworks show" was just a series of small, noisy explosions. The chemistry was an accidental discovery and there was still a long way to go.

1200 — 1600 AD: WAR TECHNOLOGY GOES WEST Unsurprisingly, it wasn't long before the military adopted gunpowder. By 1200, China had built the first rocket cannons, using gunpowder to aim and blast projectiles at their enemies. Off the battlefield, however, this technology led to something beautiful: the first aerial fireworks.

Gunpowder traveled west when European and Arabian diplomats and missionaries began visiting China around this time. Like their Chinese counterparts, western engineers also developed weapons — this time, muskets and cannons — but continued to develop fireworks that became larger and more elaborate.

If you attended a fireworks show in 1600, the science would not have been much different from ancient China, but it was a lot more entertaining! Now used for military victories, religious events or royal celebrations, aerial fireworks (still plain orange — no color yet!) were run by "firemasters" and their assistants, "green men." Before the show, the green men, named for the leaves they wore to protect themselves from sparks, would tell jokes to the crowd while they prepared the celebration. Being a green man, however, was a highly dangerous position, and many were injured or killed when their fireworks malfunctioned.

1600 — PRESENT: ENTER COLOR! MODERN FIREWORKS & THE FOURTH OF JULY When English royals weren't competing with Europe for the best fireworks display (King James II's firemaster was actually awarded knighthood 1797 hand-colored for his impressive work), they were etching of fireworks introducing fireworks to their thirteen over the River Thames colonies across the Atlantic. The historical development of manmade fibers, introduced in the 20th century, reduced the cost of fabrics. This allowed more people to afford more clothes. Other benefits of acrylics and polyester is that they cut down on shrinkage and wrinkles, reducing the need to iron.

w/chicken, oranges, dates & goat cheese

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon olive oil

12 cups baby spinach, rinsed and spun dry

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 navel oranges, peeled, sectioned, and sliced into chunks 1/4 cup roughly chopped dried dates 1/4 cup thawed frozen orange juice concentrate 2 tablespoons rice vinegar 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 12 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bitesized chunks

Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 3 ounces aged goat cheese, crumbled INSTRUCTIONS Place spinach, oranges, and dates in large bowl; set aside. In small bowl, whisk together orange juice concentrate, vinegar, and mustard; set aside. In large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, saute chicken in oil for about 3 minutes. Add garlic and saute for 2 minutes more. Stir in juice concentrate mixture and cook about 3 minutes. Season with salt

In a bowl, combine farro, tomatoes, feta, basil, and scallions.

4 to 5 sun-dried tomatoes, roughly chopped 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese 6 to 8 basil leaves, roughly chopped

In a separate bowl, whisk together oil and vinegar. Pour over salad and stir to incorporate.

Farro, an ancient grain, is cropping up on menus everywhere and can be found in grocery and health food stores. Though it is compared to spelt, farro is nuttier and more flavorful. Give it a try and see for yourself!

Lay strawberries on a baking sheet and roast for 20 minutes. Set sheet aside to cool somewhat.

In large mixing bowl, combine arugula, cucumbers, radishes and onions.

1 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup olive oil 1/3 cup basil leaves, packed 2 tablespoons tahini 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 cup radishes, halved and thinly sliced

T.A.L.ENT.'s international fame arose from being commissioned by a company in China to create 3D black light murals for an indoor miniature golf course. Within the United States, T.A.L.ENT. is best know for its tribute murals, including the "Loss of a Friend" series (featuring man's best friends with their lost loved ones' uniforms). Other works of art include murals for local businesses and residents.

A couple of fun facts! The brothers created a haunted house mural at the oceanfront that was to be a broken-down, wooden house on a brick wall three stories high. They began the job by painting awnings above real windows. Returning the next day to continue painting, they found a "stop work order" issued by The City. What? The City thought the awnings were real and awnings are not permitted at the Oceanfront! Of course, after further inspection by The City, they were allowed to finish the mural.

The brothers also painted a man's garage door with a mural that looked as though the man was inside his garage working on his 1927 Chevy.

Just like the story of the awnings in the Oceanfront area, passersby were fooled by the mural. So much so, that people have even come to his door to tell him they were actually talking to the mural before they realized that wasn't him actually working on his car!

Such an amazing testament to the highly detailed and realistic work of the Lindbergh Brothers.

Hot-Diggity-Dog! It's summertime! I know I keep talking about dogs, but we don’t have cats at our house. My husband Mike is highly allergic! So I don’t mean to discount our feline friends, I just don’t have any. In this issue I'm bringing you 7 hacks to help keep dogs cool outside in hot weather!

bananas, strawberries, carrots, green beans, cucumbers, celery, broccoli are good choices ► frozen Kongs™ — freeze applesauce, pumpkin, yogurt ► pup ice cream — buy dog-safe ice cream for an extra special treat ► provide shade outside ► go swimming (or anything water related) ► exercise at cooler times of the day

1. STAY HYDRATED — Water accounts for about 60% of a dog's body weight. A general rule of thumb is dogs should drink anywhere between 1/2 to 1 oz of fresh water per pound of body weight.

5. PROVIDE SHADE OUTSIDE

In recent years, portable and travel water bowls for dogs have increased in popularity.

7. EXERCISE AT COOLER TIMES OF THE DAY

There are some great choices, including collapsible bowls, water bottles with built-in bowls and other great travel options!

2. TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS — Taking sufficient breaks with your pup will they ensure don't get heat exhaustion or any other heat-related health issues. Here are a few ways your pup might be telling you they need a break (and some time to cool down): ► excessive panting ► whimpering/whining ► moving slower than their normal pace (when hiking, jogging, etc.) ► laying down more often than usual

6. GO SWIMMING (OR DO SOMETHING WATER-RELATED)

Knowing the signs of heatstroke in dogs is extremely important for all pup parents. There are typically very clear signs that your dog may be experiencing heatstroke. Some signs include: ► excessive panting ► drooling ► inability to move ► reddened gums ► loss of consciousness ► uncoordinated movements ► collapsing ► vomiting ► diarrhea As with any medical emergency, the sooner you spot these signs the better. If you do notice any of these signs, or other alarming behavior, call your vet or local pet hospital immediately. Every minute is important for your dog's recovery!

If you notice any of these signs, take a break.

3. USE AN ELEVATED OR COOLING BED — If your pup spends much of their time outside, elevate their beds. Cooling beds are a nice indoor option to help them cool down after a walk.

4. GIVE FROZEN TREATS OR TOYS — Here's some popular frozen dog treats your pup is sure to love (and beg for)!

WHAT DO I DO IN A PET EMERGENCY? If you suspect your

pet is sick, especially if the situation feels urgent, call your vet immediately. If you're on vacation and the situation isn't dire, consult your own veterinarian, as they have your pet's health history at hand. If your pet needs immediate attention, contact a local emergency veterinarian hospital in the immediate area—

STAYIN' OUT OF TROUBLE HURRICANE READINESS At breakfast, my wife says that last night the TV weatherman mentioned there is a storm developing off the Florida coast and that it could become a tropical storm, and possibly a hurricane.

She then asks if we're prepared and have everything we need.

I respond that we just need a few things, but I can get them at the hardware store.

Off I go to the hardware to pick up what we need. That’s how it all started. I go to the store, no list, just some ideas, but I figure I can go through the aisles and figure out what to buy.

Having the morning free, and putting off the lawn mowing for another day, I'm smiling a bit as I walk through the store. I'm basically doing the same things the oher guys are doing — going up and down the aisles. I see flashlights, remember the batteries, then pick up more batteries for the other stuff at home; also window caulk (not quite sure of the color, so it must be white).

Let's see...some heavy duty extension cords for the emergency generator, and gas cans. Good, the cans are on sale, but looks like they have been picked over pretty well. So, I buy five of the one-gallon cans to make do. A bit pricey for the five cans, but at least I have some cans. Maybe some plastic tarps? What size?

I’ll measure later. Oh look, BBQ grills on sale! Don’t need one.

Enough of that shopping! My golf show is coming on and I need to get home! I head back home with my stuff, but stop off to buy some beer, remembering the guys. I buy some extra cases, some ice and a couple of extra coolers. Darn coolers are expensive! I get home and my wife asks if I got everything.

I smile and say, “Yes.” She then asks if we have a full propane tank, plywood for window coverings, and enough fuel for the generator. I smile and tell her about my five new gas cans, but that apparently doesn't impress her. I look at her and say, “No on that extra stuff, but I can go back after my show and pick up the rest.” I also tell her that If she had wanted more hurricane stuff, she should have told me. She spots the beer, the ice and the coolers. I don’t know what I said just then, but she gives me that look! It ALL goes down hill from there and she leaves.

Sometimes, you just can’t figure out women. If she wanted all that stuff, she should have given me a list or something. How’s a guy to remember all that stuff? I offer my friend a beer and we watch some really good golf.

All of us living in coastal areas have a basic hurricane list almost committed to memory, but many families still have not bought the basics of what might be needed if a hurricane did come our way. If a developing storm near Florida is traveling our way at 15 MPH, tropical force winds could hit the NC/VA shoreline within 3-4 days. Once the strong winds and rain start, most

preparations will halt, and our options quickly become dwindle. Bridges leading out of our area shut down when the winds reach tropical force, highways start to gridlock under heavy traffic loads, trapping evacuees in their cars. Some will run out of gas, or electricity for those in electrica vehicles. While staying home in a flood-prone area presents problems, going to a potentially overcrowded shelter has its own issues. Many will be dramatically impacted by insufficient planning, bad timing and rising water.

No matter how well-prepared and trained we may be, it's hard for any of us to be fully prepared for being hit by a major storm. There is only so much that can be done within the limits of our time, space and resources. Being stuck in a precarious location in a house with limited storage space may create an over-filled garage where you can’t get to or find that item you need when you need it most. Attempting to leave on an evacuation route that will soon become grid-locked will further

endanger you. The options to stay, evacuate or go to a local shelter will all present their own unique challenges.

How do you reasonably prepare for the BEFORE and, just as importantly, AFTER the storm? Both have their issues, but the post-storm period will offer the longest exposure and majority of your issues. Your planning, and what you get done before the storm, will directly impact your post-storm recovery.

How much is enough, just right, not enough, or overkill when it comes to preparations?

1. FIRST, do what will add safety to your life. (Turn off leaking gas. Shut off the main water line to save your house’s water and prevent contamination).

2. Buy the basics needed for your shelter and comfort, but also consider for how many days you may possibly be isolated, without water and power.

10. Start your Community’s efforts each morning with a coordinated brief and plan to get what's necessary done. Make sure all know of the area hazards, and possible weather issues.

3. Have a way to filter and sterilize your water. Have suitable containers to collect and store your water.

11. Post and share incoming information and planning about what is going on. Have an information board for residents to read.

4. Buy food that is easy to prepare or open and will give you reasonable calories. Items should have a long shelf life.

5. Buy an outdoor, screened-in shelter tent. Without power, and if damaged, our homes may become unlivable. It would be a true blessing to have a screened-in tent to sleep in at night while you await repairs on your home.

6. Coordinate with your neighbors. Know who has medical training, can fix a structure, repair wiring, can communicate (HAMS), coordinate with a group, and contribute to the neighborhood.

12. Know who is in your neighborhood. Depending on the severity of the storm, security threats may enter to take advantage of the pickings.

13. Develop a Security Plan. "Friendly Fire" is NOT an OPTION! HELPFUL HINT: Just remember, when your wife or husband or whomever mentions a possible storm coming...try to have your plan and buy what is actually needed. Beer is actually an excellent fluid source. Just don’t let it be the only thing you bring home.

Just sayin'...

7. Develop a First Aid Site to treat the injured and sick. Use the available medically trained/EMT experienced volunteers to offer help. Consider what would be needed for cut treatments, punctures wounds from nails, heat exhaustion for workers, etc.

8. Share your knowledge and talents. How many can share an emergency power generator, or have a grill to cook on?

Can you share a space in a screened-in tent, or do you have an extra tarp?

9. Develop your neighborhood’s DEBRIS Plan. Coordinate your efforts and make sure ALL comply with the Debris Plan and Sanitation Plan. Hold ALL accountable and strictly enforce your plans. With no plan, the suffering of your entire neighborhood will be extended and dangerous. Rats, flies, night creatures, and serious sickness may present real-life problems.
