Sixth Form Foundation Programme

Welcome to the International Sixth Form Foundation Programme at Princess Helena College The International Sixth Form Foundation Programme is designed for girls who are planning to study A levels in the UK but who require additional preparation before starting their course. Unlike a traditional language course, the International Foundation Programme is tailored to prepare girls for their next level of education. For example, the students are introduced to the different types of assessment which they may encounter later on including essay and report writing or practical examinations.

Every girl will have the opportunity to take up to five GCSEs or IGCSEs including Mathematics, Business Studies and Science. Alongside A levels, these are a vital step in applying to a top UK university. In June, after these examinations are complete, girls will take subject specific introductions to the A levels they are planning to progress to.

Intensive English Language Tuition All girls will receive a minimum of nine lessons of English Language Tuition a week with our dedicated team of specialists. The course leads to an IGCSE in English as a Second Language, and the vocabulary and skills taught are focused on preparing girls for their next level of education.

While the academic curriculum is run on a parallel timetable to the rest of the Sixth Form, our girls on the Foundation Programme participate alongside their friends in our highly praised co-curricular SCITLLE (Serve, Create, Inspire, Thrive, Lead, Learn, Explore) programme. This gives them access to an extremely wide range of choices from individual music and dance lessons, to golf, horse riding and charity work. All of these activities offer excellent experience for the girls, and also ensure that they are integrated into the wider life of the school from the start. Girls also take part in our busy schedule of weekend trips, which include visits to London for shopping and the theatre, boat trips in Cambridge and action-packed days out playing paintball, climbing high ropes or at theme park.

Careers Guidance Foundation Programme students also benefit from excellent careers guidance. This includes the Enlightenment lecture series covering career options and university applications, university fairs, subject specific taster days, UCAS guidance and work experience. All of this ensures that the girls have an excellent grounding before they enter the Sixth Form.

Academic and Pastoral Support Girls on the Foundation Programme have an excellent network of support to help them settle in quickly to their new school and to ensure that they are making good progress from the start. On a daily basis, they will meet their Form Teacher, the Head of Sixth Form and their Housemistress, who are highly experienced in working with international students. Every girl will also have an individual Academic Mentor, whom she will meet each week to discuss her work and any other concerns.

Boarding Most girls will board in Dower House, the separate Sixth Form boarding house, where they will all have their own individual room. Dower House is a relaxed and friendly place with a very high standard of accommodation including a beautiful kitchen a dining room two comfortable common rooms a fully equipped ICT suite individual bedrooms with study facilities
