A

lot has changed in how we live and work over the past decade, yet some things remain the same – the challenge of making our workplaces safer and ensuring people return home safely every day.

Workplaces have never been safer, yet there are still too many people being injured at work.

When a worker is hurt, it not only affects their ability to work but also their family and social life, whether it is sport or playing with their families.

It’s bad for businesses too, as they need to deal with the loss of productivity and potentially face an increase in their workplace injury insurance premiums.

The good news is that all of these effects can be prevented, generally at little or no cost.

Sadly though, when safety inspectors visit many workplaces, they find the same problems over and over again.

WorkSafe Victoria is again focusing those things that hurt people the most and are entirely preventable.

This year, WorkSafe has its sights on dangerous machines, lifting and lowering objects that leads to serious manual handling injuries, domestic construction and falls from height as they are the biggest sources of injuries in the state every year.

ROM a business perspective much of the debate around remote operations and automation centres on improving productivity and cutting costs.

For employees and unions the focus is usually on computers taking work normally assigned to people.

But experts say the safety improvements these initiatives bring are too often ignored.

In an industry that’s rightfully paranoid about keeping workers safe, experts say remote ops and automation are the key to making mining roles safer.

Just as new machinery took much of the danger and physical work out of mining in the 20th century, companies are looking for software and hardware to take an even more active role in operations.

And at the same time, experts are confident they can retain job numbers, and even improve the quality of work for those employees.

Move away Speaking at the Honeywell Users Group earlier this year, Honeywell’s Gerry Gutierrez said more companies were focusing on how automation and remote control could help their safety records.

Gutierrez said that because mining companies had developed a reputation for their focus on safety, they were constantly looking for new ways to make improvements.

“The thing about health, safety and the environment is that there’s a big responsibility for these operators to have high standing operations and to keep that level of performance,” he said.

The new glove is suited for multi-purpose light duty mechanical applications.

Hand protection in mining THE number of crush and cut injuries are higher than they need to be, and if a miners’ hands are out of order, then they aren’t much use on site.

Specialists in hand protection, Ansell have a new glove designed to protect users while still providing comfort and flexibility.

The company has launched its HyFlex 11-820 glove for multi-purpose light duty mechanical applications.

According to Ansell’s Mitchell Mackey, the HyFlex is a “next generation glove which delivers high performance for industrial hand protection�.

It features “a breathable, high-abrasion resistant palm coating formulation gives superior mechanical wear and tear performance and a new generation liner provides the wearer with a ‘second-skin’ level of comfort. “The HyFlex 11-820 addresses the problems of worn coatings and dirty liners workers often experience with their conventional gloves. The dark blue ‘second skin’ Spandex liner hides dirt and offers a snug, comfortable all-shift fit.

“Ansell’s Nitrile long-life coating formulation is designed to excel when the glove is used in applications where abrasion resistance is a priority,�

The company has also focused on increasing comfort.

These gloves have been enhanced by an additional knitting process that drops down the little finger.

Additionally the upper palm portion below the middle three fingers is knitted separately from the rest of the palm, as well as the little finger joint mounted lower, means that independent movement have been increased, resulting in a better fitting glove.

On top of this, wearers will also find an “extra comfort� cuff that features an over edge that means the glove can be more easily pulled on or off.

Independent testing by European agency Centexbel has confirmed the HyFlex 11-820 glove meets level 4 abrasion ratings – the highest in the one to four scale.

Remote driver assist DRIVERS in remote parts of Australia who get lost or experience vehicle breakdown can now be assured of rescue.

Trimble Field Service Management (FSM) has partnered with Auspace and Dynamique to offer a comprehensive Remote Driver Assist solution.

The solution includes Trimble car monitoring technology, an Auspace control interface and 24/7 monitoring from the Dynamiq Emergency Operation Centre. Drivers can be tracked with both satellite and cellular technologies, even in

areas where traditional solutions cannot provide service.

The new dual-mode, cloud-based fleet monitoring solution is designed for field services workers who travel between urban, regional and remote areas, continually monitoring vehicle status and alerting the operations centre if problems occur with the vehicle or its route.

Trucking industry still waiting for fatigue management legislation Tom Scahill

T

RUCKING and transportation play a large role in the mining industry.

As such, freight drivers carry a heavy load, not just literally in their trucks, but also the pressure to deliver on time and knowing that an error behind the wheel could have fatal consequences.

This stressful and demanding work environment causes some drivers to feel the need to push themselves beyond what they know is safe to ensure they meet a deadline window, or pick up a bonus.

In the event of an accident caused by a fatigued driver, is that driver solely to blame for his/her poor choices, or should other parties, such as their employer or the customer, be accountable as well?

Despite numerous efforts by federal and state governments to regulate fatigue management within the transport and logistics sector, Australia has yet to implement a national standard for managing driver fatigue.

This means companies can continue to use paper logbooks despite the ease with which drivers can manipulate their breaks and stoppages – jeopardising their safety and the safety of others.

It also does not take into account drivers who are employed with one company who does contract work for a second company. This means drivers can, and often do, finish a shift at one employer and then start their next shift at another employer without taking the required break in between.

With the prevalence of interstate deliveries, a nationwide standard for fatigue management is long overdue.

As it stands, the existing laws differ from state to state and astonishingly, a driver’s hours are not tracked interstate.

This means that the hours a driver accumulates in one state are effectively voided when he or she crosses a border into another state.

The technology is available to manage trucking fatigue, but national legislation is the key.

(EU) have successfully operated and enforced a pan-EU driver management system that is effective, accurate and secure. All freight vehicles greater than 3.5 tonnes are fitted with a tachograph, which records the driving time, breaks, rest periods as well as durations and time lapsed for other work undertaken by a driver. A police patrol car can check all relevant driver information remotely and in real-time while cruising beside or behind a truck during its journey.

Since 2006, the tachographs have been digital, allowing a more secure and accurate recording and storage of data than the previous analogue tachograph.

With many truck manufacturers originating from Europe, trucks purchased for use in Australia are delivered with tachographs fitted as standard features, but no Australian jurisdiction recognises the data and so the technology is left unused and wasted while an inferior approach is attempted.

With such a successful and simple model, and with the technology already available, Australia should be looking to adopt a similar approach. The choice of hardware should not be mandated, and rather than having a standalone fatigue management device, it should be part

of a wider capability to capture data on driving behaviour, including speeding and monitoring fuel efficiency.

The outcomes that the technology can provide are far more important than the actual configuration and components of the technology itself. As long as the data being captured is consistent, transport companies should be able to go to market to find the solution that suits their business and also complies with national mandated standards.

Recent tragic events and accidents have again highlighted the need for an increased focus on improving safety standards within the trucking and transportation industry. One of the cornerstones of solving the driver fatigue problem in the transport industry is to have technologies that are reliable and trusted by all stakeholders.

Just as airbags are now accepted, and in fact expected, as a compulsory inclusion in any safe passenger vehicle, the trucking industry needs a pan-national legislation for fatigue management to protect drivers, other motorists and the community.

Crane safety systems maker acquired LOAD Systems International (LSI) has bought Adelaide-based Robway Crane Safety Systems, increasing its market share in the Australasian market.

Founded in 1977, Robway manufactures safe load and line tension monitoring instrumentation, and provides services to the construction, mining and offshore industries in Australia and Asia.

The company has had substantial demand for its overload monitoring systems stemming from the increasing need for preventative maintenance, maximum productivity and safety in the crane and associated industries.

Its systems have been tested in harsh environments such as off shore drilling rigs and in Central Australia.

In addition to gaining the Australian market share of Robway, the new entity, named LSI Robway, will provide LSI’s global customers with cable-based instrumentation solutions for those who prefer cable technology. TECHS4BIZ says Android-based tablets and smart phones can be used to conduct scaffold safety inspections.

Nearly all scaffold inspectors already have phones, and using these for inspections does not require large capital expenses.

Pervidi is a scaffold safety inspection app which is implemented by Techs4Biz. It is said to be simple to use, and can be used in conjunction with speech-to-text technology, reducing typing input.

The offline mode allows the use of the app in areas with little or no cellular signal, with data consolidated on the device, then sent when internet connectivity resumes.

Another improvement over paper is the ability to integrate photos via the phone’s camera into the submitted report. The inspector can append information on the pictures by drawing or writing.
