IVIL contractor Ertech has deployed Konecranes overhead cranes in its equipment maintenance facility at Wangara, Western Australia.

According to the companies, the cranes will sets benchmarks in maintenance facility safety, and Ertech has also signed a maintenance agreement with Konecranes to service the units and undertake statutory inspections.

The 5- and 10-tonne cranes will be used to service about 170 items of major plant, including scrapers, excavators, loaders, and bulldozers.

Ertech delivers civil construction services for resources, infrastructure and land development clients, and caters to large mining projects.

The 10-tonne overhead crane at Ertech has a 20-metre span, while the five-tonne crane, which straddles the automated welding bay, has a span of 9 metres.

The cranes employ radio controls with the load display in the handset.

Radio remotes mean safety for the operators, who can stand well away from the loads being lifted and shifted.

The remotes also give freedom of movement, ensuring the operators can choose a position where they have the best view of the cranes and loads.

Air suspension leaf helper kits The increased towing and load carrying capacity of the new Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 has inspired All Air Suspension’s new Air Suspension Rear Leaf Spring helper Kit. Anti-tip truck body IT is not rare to see overbalanced haul trucks on site.

The sudden weight of the load leaving the tray has been known to tip it backwards, making the truck stand up on its rear wheels. While it may seem like a funny occurrence, it causes serious damage; both to the truck, the driver, and the miner’s bottom line.

And as long as the design of truck bodies remained the same, the issue remains a problem.

With this issue in mind, Australian company Austin Engineering created a new haul truck body designed to give miners back control over their material flows.

Speaking to Austin Engineering’s Joe Kelly, he explained that “it started when Peabody Energy came to us, as they found that when discharging their loads their trucks’ front wheels would come off the ground and damage suspension when coming down and putting an operators’ safety at risk”.

The solution to this weighty issue was relatively simple: “[Austin Engineering’s subsidiary] Westech solved the problem by creating a new flow control body design,” Kelly said, adding that “the body goes up at an angle, and has multi-level kicks which work to create a pocket of material in the tray, so it stops all of the material flowing out in a single heavy load that slides out from the bottom”.

He went on to say that “instead it now has a continual flow that starts from the material on the top, unloading it at the same speed as before, this not only negates the tipping risk the truck faced as it

New flood monitoring system A co-operative partnership between three mining companies and the Queensland Department of Main Roads has seen a state-of-the-art new monitoring system installed on the Suttor Developmental Road in North Queensland to look out for floods.

The road is a crucial link to mines owned by Rio Tinto, Xstrata Coal and Peabody Energy.

The system, marketed by the Boylan Group as Boylan Eagle Eye, was installed in December last year to monitor Bee Creek and Peak Gully – two streams that cause major flooding across the road in times of high rainfall.

The “no power, no wires” Australian invention enables live and archived vision and data to be accessed via a web browser from any location.

“In the past, we would have had to send someone out to check for flooding or debris across the road,” Herring said.

RMTeK director Brendan Doyle – the technical support behind the Eagle Eye program – said the units had successfully monitored three flood events since they were installed.

“Eagle Eye is a hugely powerful tool in helping keep the mines productive and the mining staff safe,” Mr Doyle said.

“It also equates to substantial labour cost savings for the department,” he said.

The system is efficient and simple to use, and keeps data costs to a minimum.

All authorised users need is a computer or handheld device with a web browser to access live and archived vision and data, plus all device settings.

The system’s weather sensor suite also measures – in real time – barometric pressure, humidity, precipitation, temperature, and wind speed and direction. A full range of environmental sensors is also available.

Managing fatigue

O

NE of the speakers at Safety In Action 2013 is Michael Adeney, whose organisation Fatigue Safety works with rail, road transport, manufacturing, emergency services, mining and energy, police, aviation, and even circuses to help mitigate their worker fatigue risks.

According to Adeney, fatigue is a hidden problem for many workplaces: many businesses fail to acknowledge and understand it as a real safety issue, and as a result are at risk from often serious fatigue-related accidents.

“The science on fatigue paints a compelling picture, but the message is not getting through,” Adeney told Safety First.

Common knowledge within the fatigue management industry is that fatigue can impair people more than alcohol can. A person who wakes up at 8 o’clock after a good sleep will perform on par with someone with a blood alcohol level of 0.05 after 17 hours of being awake.

Stretch the waking hours to 22 or 24 hours, and performance levels deteriorate to equivalent BAC of 0.1.

“When people become dangerously fatigued, they tend to think they are OK,” Adeney said.

“So relying on self-assessment for fatigue is inadequate as a strategy.”

A key issue with fatigue is sleep.

“Poor sleep is at epidemic levels,” Adeney said.

“If you get 100 Aussies in a room, about 45 percent will have some sleeping problem. Of that, about 10-15 percent will have a sleep disorder, which is the red zone. Another 30 percent or so will be in the yellow zone.”

For sleep disorders like sleep apnea, medical assistance is needed. But it is possible to improve sleep via behavioural strategies, weeding out factors which have a negative effect on sleep.

Caffeine, for example, has a long half-life within the blood-stream. Having multiple cups of coffee a day can see caffeine remaining in the blood-stream 24/7, shaving 20 to 30 percent off a person’s sleep.

Alcohol, which is often used to selfmedicate due to its ability to relax the

muscles and quicken the onset of sleep, breaks the sleeping pattern, disturbing rest in the second half of the night.

Adeney uses the defences-in-depth model to combat fatigue-related risks.

This model consists of four stages, where the risk can be detected and resolved before an accident occurs.

Level 1: Insufficient sleep due to shift scheduling factors.

Solution: Inspect the shift structure and change it. Consider overtime and unplanned overtime.

Level 2: Assessment of fatigue risk via a survey of the amount of sleep a worker has had in the last 48 hours.

Solution: There are systems which allow risk assessment based on the amount of sleep a person has had.

Level 3: Fatigue-related behaviours starting to show up at work.

Solution: Body signs such as double blinks, head nodding, forgetfulness, etc, are symptoms of fatigue. Staff can be educated to look out for such indicators.

Level 4: Errors at work.

Solution: Have systems in place to detect and manage mistakes such as forgetting to turn off taps, navigational errors, etc.

Final level: Actual accidents Solution: A reactive system which investigates accidents and incidents to further refine future preventive solutions.

Adeney says technology is not necessarily the solution to fatigue management. If a company knows the principles and priorities, it is possible to protect itself against fatigue without relying on expensive technology.

Australian-made approach to fleets will boost safety The federal government’s move to encourage governments and businesses to purchase Australian-made cars for their fleets will boost efficiency and safety, claims Trimble.

According to Trimble, while the plan provides stimulus for the Australian motor industry, it also encourages businesses to rethink the way in which they manage their fleets.

Tom Scahill, Business Area Director, ANZ, Field Service Management,

Transport and Logistics Divisions, Trimble Navigation says the move will have positives for economy and safety.

“It’s important for businesses operating fleets to not only invest in locallymanufactured cars, it’s also vital for them to be thinking of ways to achieve greater efficiency and improved levels of safety of their fleet operation,” said Scahill.

Scahill claims the Australian fleet industry has not kept pace with new technologies that help them achieve higher

New safety legislation for SA 1 January 2013 saw new workplace safety legislation take effect in South Australia, bringing the state in line with most of Australia.

The Work Health and Safety Act 2012 replaced the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act 1986.

According to Robin Scott, A/Executive Director of SafeWork SA, the new laws are consistent with the old, familiar laws but provide a new approach that clarifies everyone’s roles in workplace safety.

“South Australia has a strong safety record. In 2012 we were the only state to meet the national target for reducing work-related injuries,” Scott said.

“The new laws will help to further reduce workplace injury and will create avenues for solving safety issues, while ensuring that the same high standards of workplace safety will apply in all states and territories.”

The WHS Act will also reduce red tape for businesses that operate across state borders and provide interstate workers with the same protections and safety standards while also recognising their licensing and training nationally.

Victoria and Western Australia are now the only states that have not yet introduced the harmonised laws.

La Trobe Masters safety course accredited LA Trobe University has achieved accreditation for its Master of ergonomics, Safety and health, after meeting the exacting standards set by the Australian Occupational health and Safety education Accreditation Board.

OhS advisors are increasingly required to have university qualifications.

While the accreditation of university OhS education focuses on the generalist occupational health and safety role, the La Trobe program has an ergonomics and human factors emphasis.

According to La Trobe University, this focus targets work-related musculoskeletal

disorders (MSDs), which are Australia’s largest OhS problem.

A recent report from Safe Work Australia estimated that in 2008-09 MSDs cost Australian business and the community $25.2 billion placing.

La Trobe graduates, who are able to study fully online, are equipped to play a key role in managing these disorders within an OhS generalist framework.

La Trobe is the second university to go through the accreditation.

These detectors are driven by MSA XCell technology.

The automated test stand can be used as either a stand-alone unit or an integrated portable detector management system, enabling total data access and control of the gas detector fleet.

Once an Altair gas detector is placed within the Galaxy GX2 System, it can be tested and calibrated automatically. The system allows for up to 10 test stations, four cylinder holders and multi-unit charger within one Galaxy GX2 System detector bank.

Remote diagnostics tool for compressed air

OGE has released the airstatus, a new remote diagnostics tool which increases safety and transparency in compressed air production and all associated components.

The airstatus tool helps prevent expensive service technician call-outs and maintains the high-level performance and efficiency of the compressed air station.

With airstatus, users have control over up to 32 components from anywhere in the world.

Process data such as status, maintenance messages, temperatures and pressures are directly transmitted and displayed, making airstatus a powerful remote diagnostics tool.

Users can identify, analyse and react immediately to fault messages on their own computer or smartphone, considerably reducing the time needed to rectify faults.

The monitoring facility is commissioned via a ModbusScan to detect each of the compressors and components.

The system data communication is processed in real-time via GSM/GPRS or a LAN connection.

Users can view data in the BOGE airstatus web portal or in the BOGE airstatus APP. It is possible to define limits which trigger alarm by email or SMS if they are exceeded or undercut.

BOGE offers five different packages with successively advanced features.

These range from the “local monitoring” package with hardware, web portal use and APP, to the mobile monitoring package with an additional SIM card right up to a premium monitoring package.

The premium maintenance provides BOGE customers with both full transparency through the BOGE airstatus web portal and APP and also a maintenance contract which includes full system monitoring and maintenance.

The “proactive maintenance” package, too, provides customers with a maintenance service.

Chip vac system cleans up EXAIR, distributed by Compressed Air Australia, has introduced a 205L Premium Chip Vac System which quickly and easily cleans chips or other dry materials from fixtures, floors and work surfaces.

The model 6393-205 System includes the Chip Vac, lever lock drum lid, shutoff valve, filter bag, drum dolly, static resistant hose, heavy duty aluminium tools, 6.1m air hose, tool holder and quick connect fittings.

The Chip Vac can be easily moved from drum to drum to keep different materials separate for recycling.

Dusty materials, such as absorbents, are trapped by the 0.1 micron filter bag to keep the surrounding area clean.

The Chip Vac is compressed air powered and attaches to an ordinary open-top drum.

It is quiet at 77 dBA, making it suitable for a wide variety of applications. There are no motors or impellers to clog or wear out.

The system quickly and easily cleans chips or other dry materials from fixtures, floors and work surfaces.

Gas welding hose reels ReCoila has developed a reel for gas welding that will increase safety levels for maintenance teams.

When gas welding hoses are stored by wrapping them around bottles or trolleys it can create a potential fire risk.

ReCoila’s Gen iii oa, oP, P and a Series hose reels provide a safer operating environment and extend the lifespan of welding hoses.

The Gen iii Series hose reels are a compact solution for gas welding, cutting and shielding processes. The units have a unique spring rewind latching system, a tough impact and corrosion resistant outer shell encasing either 8 or 15 metres of 6mm iD twin oxygen and acetylene or oxygen and propane hose. an external swivel design on the oxygen and fuel gas reels provides added safety, and makes o-ring replacement easier.
