Ergonomic grease gun

T

HE grease gun is now more ergonomic, with the Italianmade Speedy Grease gun now available in Australia courtesy of Rationale Imports.

Speedy Grease has no movable and wearable parts, works on suction instead of pressure from a spring, works perfectly in cold weather and delivers twice the lube speed with 11,200 PSI. The seal creates a vacuum and allows the operator to bleed the gun by pushing the seal with their fingers. A larger and longer than normal piston allows the gun to pump out more grease.

The new grease gun is also more user friendly, allowing the user to choose from double or single-handed use via a 60kg magnet located on the fixed handle. A 80cm flexible hose extension is also available when extra length is needed for a job.

Working at Height Association relaunches, expands remit THE FALL Protection Manufacturer’s Association of Australia (FPMA) has been relaunched as the Working at Height Association (WAHA) and plans to expand its scope and remit.

The FPMA was founded in 2005, and comprised eight major Australian manufacturers of fall arrest equipment. The mandate was to examine market needs, address falls from heights incidents, and develop ways to improve height safety.

Since the relaunch as WAHA, the association is continuing with it current major project, to complete its development of an Anchor Point Standard, following the upgrade of AS/NZS1891 in 2009.

The Technical Committee of WAHA has already presented a Draft Anchor Point Standard to Standards Australia for committee discussion and has offered to fund the committee process, with contracts under review.

According to WAHA, the Anchor Point Standard development was delayed due to the ongoing OHS harmonisation process and changes at Standards Australia.

The relaunch will also see the association include all the industries related to height safety. With the expanded scope of WAHA, positions are now open to new members, who must be able to demonstrate the highest standard of skill, integrity and responsibility in the industry.

Membership is now open to: • Part line manufacturers of working at height equipment (anchors, walkways, ladders etc) • Equipment installers (vertical/horizontal static lines, anchors etc) • Height safety personnel training operations • Height safety equipment distributors • Related associations/authorities • Customers (equipment end users and their employer companies)

The grease gun caters to single- or double-handed use.

Anti-fog, anti-scratch eye protection HONEYWELL Safety Products has released Durastreme coating technology, which combines industrial anti-fog and antiscratch coatings onto a single lens for increased eye protection in the workplace.

The anti-fog layer on the inside prevents lens fogging allowing workers to see clearly at all times in humid and other difficult work environments, while the durable antiscratch coating on the outside protects against harsh elements.

Based on independent comparative life testing using the Bayer Abrasion Test Method, Honeywell says Durastreme extends the life of the lens by up to three times longer than that of competitive anti-fog lenses.

The DuraMaxx safety goggle features the unique Durastreme coating and is reportedly the first panoramic modern goggle to provide global performance including comfort, anti-fog capabilities, ease-of-use and durability.

The soon to be released SP1000 sealed eyewear also features the Durastreme coating, which reportedly makes it a powerful option for demanding industries where workers can be exposed to high particulate environments, such as oil and gas, mining or steel and metal working.

World-first safety hand rail

LEIN Architectural, an Australian company specialising in stainless steel fabrication, has developed a world-first safety hand rail called the KAG Rail.

Traditional “smooth” hand rails are inherently slippery. The company says its design with a swage contours to the shape of a closed hand, and provides up to 80% more grip in dry conditions, or 40% more grip when wet or greasy. The extra grip will reduce ‘slip and fall’ accidents in a variety of working environments.

The system can be fitted with fibre optic lights for safety in dark environments, and services such as water, electrical, air/gas and data can be concealed inside the rail.

With most industries often using many different chemicals, it is critical that workers are issued with hand protection that will provide the highest level of protection for their work environment.

Ansell says there is not one glove material that provides resistance to all chemicals. Different protective materials will behave differently when in contact with specific chemicals.

CAS is short form for Chemical Abstracts Service, which is a division of the American Chemical Society.

IFTING a tensioned conveyor belt out of the way to do maintenance work is a difficult job, and can be time consuming and dangerous, but not anymore with the Flexco Flex-Lifter.

Transport materials safely SAFETY and security are key considerations for all industries involved in the transportation of materials.

Trucks, forklifts, vans and other vehicles used to transport materials have combustible components within them, many of them in close proximity to ignition and heat sources, such as engines and transmissions.

The material being transported can also be combustible, adding to the fuel load should a fire break out. It’s clear that the risk of a fire while in transit can be high.

Automated container handling system AUTEFA Automation’s new Vacugrip automated product handling and warehousing systems are now available in Australia through HBM Plastics & Packaging Technologies.

The technology is designed specifically for handling light weight containers.

For palletising, Vacugrip enables the creation and placing of layers of empty containers/ bottles onto pallets. The system is ideally suited for palletising output from multiple low speed blow-moulders onto separate pallet stations of different container types.

This tool has a layer capacity of up to 40kg and can handle bottle sizes from 200ml to 3.75L. It can palletise and/or depalletise several product lines with various products consecutively as there is no need for format parts and the system does not require change over time.

Automatic dual bulk bag filling system FLEXICON has launched a new dual bulk bag filling system which utilises automation to safely fillm, high capacity bulk bags in popular sizes.

The system integrates two of the company’s Swing-Down Bulk Bag Fillers with a Flexicon Pallet Dispenser and Powered Roller Conveyors.

Programmable controls allow the fillers to operate separately or simultaneously, filling bags of the same size or two different sizes.

When a filling cycle is initiated by push button or contact closure, the system commences by manipulating a stack of pallets to move a single pallet into position below the filling station.

The bag connection frame of the Swing-Down fill heads lowers and pivot. This allows an operator situated at floor level to safely and quickly attach bag straps to the automated latches, slide the bag spout over an inflatable spout seal, and press a spout seal inflation button to continue the process.

The system then inflates the bag to remove creases, and fills the bag at a high rate. The filling is completed accurately by switching to trickle-feed. It then deflates the spout seal, releases the bag loops, raises the fill head to disengage the spout, rolls the bag out of the filling area, and rolls a new pallet into place to begin another cycle.

An annular gap inside of the fill head spout directs displaced air and dust during the filling operation to a single point connection, for easy dust management.

Safety solenoid interlocking switches SCHNEIDER Electric’s new Electroslim XCS Series include in-built safety interlock switches designed for gate guard mounting and added machine safety.

Models in the Electroslim line-up are slim, coming in either metal or plastic.

Both models come standard with a manual key for locking and unlocking options, which Schneider says is ideal for commissioning works.

Safe designs critical for oil and gas industry

HE AUSTRALASIAN Oil & Gas Exhibition & Conference (AOG) will be host to “Safety in Design”, a presentation by Dr Madhat Abdel-jawad, President of GexCon Australia.

According to Dr Abdel-jawad, the oil and gas industry needs to place an even greater emphasis on safety in the design of oil and gas facilities to safeguard against explosion accidents.

“Often you find that this emphasis on safety in design is location and activity dependent,” he said. “We all can do more in placing emphasis on safety and make it a key design parameter.”

While industry understanding of oil and gas-related explosions had increased dramatically since the 1970s, a number of problems remain unsolved, including the effect of turbulence on deflagration to detonation transition.

A greater emphasis on safety is needed.

Dr Abdel-jawad’s presentation is just one in an entire session dedicated to safety and integrity management at the AOG Conference.

Improved dust collection for industry CAMFIL Farr Air Pollution Control (APC) now offers its Gold Series cartridge dust collector with an optional integrated HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) monitoring filter.

Mounted on top of the collector so that no additional floor space is required, this after-filter prevents collected dust from reentering the workspace if there should be a leak in the dust collector’s primary filtering system.

It is a required component in recirculating dust collection systems that recycle air downstream of the collector when filtering hazardous dusts.

Each module incorporates two filters capable of handling 2500cfm (4248cmh) of air per filter and rated to remove 99.97% of airborne particles of 0.3 micron in diameter and larger.

The Gold Series may be used for a wide variety of pollution control and product recovery applications.

Unlike some after-filters which are installed downstream of the fan with the filter at positive pressure, the Gold Series’ integrated design maintains the after-filter at negative pressure, preventing contaminated air from escaping in the event of a leak.

New system for classifying and labelling hazardous chemicals THE Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) came into effect with the model work health and safety laws on 1 January 2012.

The GHS is a globally agreed system designed to harmonise the diverse systems of chemical classification, safety datasheets and hazard communication currently in use throughout the world. It is expected to provide trade benefits and improve health and safety outcomes.

The change means manufacturers and importers of hazardous chemicals will need to re-classify their products, re-label them and prepare new safety data sheets to meet the new requirements.
