Fathers’

Babanango was a camp that the grade 7 boys went on for a week and there are mixed opinions about it, but most enjoyed it.

On the first day the boys arrived at school at 6:30 and then got on the bus for a long trip of eight hours. There was one rest break before the boys finally arrived and were taken to the fire pit and were told about the camp. Then they were spilt into different cabins and after settling in the boys went down to the river for their first activity.

After coming up and having dinner the boys were told about two things which were, polar bears and how we had to do them 3 times. The second

was that Mr. Grim warned the boys how important sleep would be and that boys would be punished for staying up.

Next morning, after being woken up by the vuvuzela, the boys were taken down to the river to do polar bears. A polar bear is when you do 10 push ups in a freezing river. After coming up from polar bears they were told about the activity system.

There was a morning activity, a mid day activity, an afternoon activity and a night activity. The activities ranged from obstacle courses, scavenger hunts and a nature trail.

On Tuesday the voted best activity took place at night on the riverbed. The boys took their bedding

down and the cooking took place around the camp. The boys competed to make the best potjie and spent hours over the meal. The judging began and after that the counsellors told us that it was lights out and the some of the boys played soccer until late, others went to bed.

On Wednesday the boys went on a tour of the Zulu kingdom, and they learned much about the kingdom and kings as they went around.

The rest of the days went by in a blur. Eventually the award ceremony took place at which the boys were given a certificate and buff.

Beating Loadshedding with Alternative Energy and Urgency From Our Government

Dear Mr President, South Africans are suffering more than ever before. Everyday more people find refuge on the streets of our cities. Covid accelerated our unemployment of young people, and now the war in Europe has contributed to petrol and diesel prices rising to its highest levels ever. Food prices have sky rocketed. For some people transporting their children to school and back has become unaf-

fordable, putting education at risk for many South African families. As if these issues are not enough for South Africans, persistent loadshedding of up to 6 hours a day is the single greatest threat to the wellbeing of our economy and our people. Let us help you to help us with these simple ideas for you to act on: Incentivise households who are using or plan to use renewable energy

sources such as, solar, gas, hydroelectric by offering them tax incentives and subsidies, so we can make it easier for them to adopt renewable energy sources.

Source affordable renewable energy options and curate payment plans to low and middle income households so they too can slowly ease themselves off the grid. The more people we can get to use these alternatives, the better.

Our youth and future generations need to be protected from climate change and the easiest way to do that is stop our use of fossil fuels, such as coal, and adopt renewable energy sources such as solar, which is cheaper and more sustainable we are blessed Mr President with adequate and free sunshine.

Renewable energy creates new jobs as they are produced locally and creates jobs in our communities. This will help reduce our unemployment

Renewable energy, especially solar, can be installed quickly, helping us to beat loadshedding

much faster than it takes to build coal and nuclear power stations or fixing our existing plants. So let’s just contextualise this for you Mr President and the reader. We have CLIMATE CHANGE, COVID, CONFLICT, AND COST OF LIVING (THE 4 BIG C’s). The biggest challenge is going to be affordability and energy justice which will require new and creative solutions, policy innovation and decisive action from you. We need strong, honest, caring leadership and urgency Mr President, not tomorrow..TODAY!

AND THE DAY

Father Day Market Held at Pridwin School

The father day market was held by the Gr7s just before Camp. The boys paired up and sold different items and foods to the other Grades and even fathers.

The market was held outside in the carpark. The boys supplied all their products, which mostly consisted of lots of sweets, keychains and biltong. The prices of all the products the boys were selling had to be in multiples of five and a maximum amount of R 30 per product. The boys had to bring their own Tablecloths to set up

their market and rent a table for R100. If a person bought an item, the boys put the money in a jar to keep it safe and for change if needed. At the end of the market, they cleaned up the mess around the carpark and took the jars of money back to the classroom for the teachers to inspect.

The money that the boys made from the market is being put towards the Gr7 leavers’ gift.

The Pridwin Knight Run Siya Dlomo

On the 11th of February 2022 Pridwin hosted their annual Knight Run. The Knight Run is a long distance run to help raise funds for the Paediatric Baragwanath Burns Unit. You can choose to run either 2.5km or 5km. Whether you're a strong runner or just prefer to walk, the Pridwin Knight Run caters to all. This year's Knight Run was themed as a color run. Entrants were asked to wear white so you would see all the amazing colors thrown at them as they ran through the Pridwin property.

This is my final year and as I am a senior at Pridwin it was very important for me to participate fully Every year I have fully participated but this year in particular, I decided to put my full effort into contributing to the charity run. The buildup of excitement was palpable as my friends, and I decided to wear the same white T shirt and run in crocs as a symbol of unity in the grade 7 year group.

The race began and my friends and I speedily took to the front. We were then greeted by the first station of colour. Sud-

denly there was a turn making a white T shirt stained blue. With the evidence of the first colour clearly on our shirts a burst of energy arose and we thrust forward to the next station of colour. Our excitement boosts continued till the final station where we decided to set up a scrum formation to cross the finish line as a symbol of unity and brotherhood in grade 7.

This event was my favourite as they had an array of various food stands and drinks stands,

A New Teacher at Pridwin Charles Stuart Reckling

As you all know a new teacher joined our school staff January. But do you know his name or what grade he teaches?

Three years ago, Mr Collins began his adventure in Kazakhstan in a British International School located in Astana (Now Nur Sultana) which is the capital of Kazakhstan. Here he taught Five year olds for some time before he started teaching 10 year olds. He taught all the main subjects such as Mathematics, Science and English.

He can speak some Russian, but just enough to allow him to order food and to get essentials.

We wish him many happy years at Pridwin.

From the Sports Desk

Just before our rugby season started, Pridwin played in their festival called the Pridwin Rugby 7s. It was held over one weekend.

On the Friday Pridwin played 5 games and on Saturday they played 4. They won 2, drew 5 and lost 2.

The points format was based on how many tries each team scored, so although Pridwin didn’t win many games, they scored the most tries sharing the t rophy with Saint Stithians.

This festival was a big help to the school’s Rugby 1st XV because it showed what some of the team needed to work on and how they could improve. This also showed the coaches who the real leaders were.

To encourage and interest and good spirit, the boys

civies every Friday. The team was most grateful for the support and cheering during their games.

The rugby season started off with an amazing win over St David’s after Pridwin made a comeback to win the game. The next game was the derby against the Ridge. Pridwin was the better side winning 43 10. Then they went to St. Peter’s which saw a one sided game with Pridwin winning 46 10.

At Pridwin the rugby season is the most exciting season because it is the one sport where people come together to watch the wonderful game. Prid-

Book Reviews

AB de Villiers Autobiography

AB de Villiers is a world renown cricket player who played for South Africa from 2004 to 2018. It was always his dream to play for South Africa. He tried super hard and never gave up. He holds the record for the fastest 50 in just 31 balls.

AB de Villiers or Abraham Benjamin de Villiers had a natural talent in cricket and during his youth he was always playing sport and always striving to be better than he was. When he was young, he would play cricket with his brothers every single day when he got back from school. AB de Villiers always told himself that he would retire from cricket when there was no excitement about walking onto the pitch, and that is why he retired.

AB de Villiers was one of the most successful South African cricketers because of his will to learn and the fact that he always wanted to be better. He is also my favourite cricketer because he never gave up and always was a team player. He has inspired lots of other cricket lovers to never give up and to always play for your team not for yourself.

Visit To A Victorian House

Earlier this year the Grade 7s went on a trip to Lindfield House, a Victorian house in Auckland Park, built in 1910. Herbert Baker is likely to be the designer of the house. which is named after a village in England. The first owners of the house were Mr. and Mrs. Stanwell, who lived there until 1924.The second owner was Henry O'Kelly Webber, who was the president of the Chamber of Mines. The third owner was Donald Relton Austin an engineer who bought the house in 1944. Then in the 1950s the house was owned by Peter Laband, a stockbroker.

The house exhibits architecture, artefacts, arts, typewriters and old necessities from the Victorian era. There are wired telephones on the walls where you could dial the buttons using keys, pots with very detailed pictures carved on them and many other rooms. In the dining room, the table was filled with all sorts of fancy eating utensils. There was a salt holder with a spiral drawing on it, 4 forks, 4 knives and 4 spoons per person, as they had 7 courses!

person, as they had 7 courses! They had a different knife and fork for things like meat, chicken, lamb and beef. There were eight seats at the table. The man of the house(owner) sat at the head, and the woman of the house (owner’s wife) sat at the bottom. The brother/sister of the owner sat on his left and the brother/sister of the owner’s wife sat on her left. There was also a playroom with a giant model of a house, as well as many dolls. There were a few bedrooms, and every bedroom had a bookshelf, bed and poster. There was a library, and in the library was the study, which was only for the male owner. There was also a room with instruments in it. There was a grand Piano, a smaller piano, a violin, a drum set and a cello. The kitchen was huge and has many basins, cupboards and gas heaters. There was a small room for the people who worked at the house. At the back of the house (just before the bedrooms for the people that worked at the house.) was a giant veranda where the boys had tea and biscuits. There was a miniature store inside the veranda where you can buy things .like necklaces, stuffed toys and crystals.
