Pridwin school song
In Arthur’s realm, around the table Sat the Knights so brave and able Courteous, true – it is no fable Manners maketh man. Bedevere, one-handed, Galahad, the warrior, Launcelot, at Arthur’s side, And Tristram, with his love of fair Isolde; These four Knights, all men of virtue, Faith and Hope and Charity for you, Courage, Honour, Loyalty to you, We now follow them.
Mans van Arthur se goeie skip Prydwen Crews of Arthur’s good ship Prydwen Seil die rowwe see op aanvraag; Sailed the dang’rous seas he bid them; Ons moet dien soos ridders voorheen, We must serve as these knights did then, Bankvas tot die end. Steadfast to the end. Ubuqotho, Bulungiswa Honesty and Justice, Bambiswano, Bungane Fellowship and Friendship, Sisebenza sibekezela, Strength to strive and persevere, Kuyizimiso ‘kwakh’ ikusasa lethu. Are qualities on which to build our futures. As we face life’s trials and sorrows, Firmly meeting new tomorrows, Guarding values each man follows, Prydwen, lead us on!
School hymn

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares could destroy, Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, Be there at our labours, and give us, we pray, Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.
Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

PATRICK LEES
Good morning parents, members of the Board, honoured guests, staff, but most importantly, good morning boys, gentlemen and knights of Pridwin. Welcome to your 2021 virtual Prize-giving Ceremony.
Boys, I’m sure for a lot of you the headmaster’s speech at prize-giving is the most boring thing you have to listen to all year? Well, if I were your age again, I probably would have to agree with you, but unfortunately, just like when you have to do cycle tests, or exams, or chores around the house, a headmaster has to say a few things – this is my cycle test! The good thing though is that I just have to cover two things – give a brief message to you and your parents, and to thank the many people who have made this year so special and great, albeit under challenging circumstances again.
And so, I would like to get a bit more comfortable, just give me two seconds … (changes into Pridwin uniform)
So, now that I am a Pridwin boy, I wonder what makes a Pridwin boy so remarkable? Luckily we are guided by our school’s mission statement, which aims to unlock the unique and multifaceted potential of each boy, so that he is able to make a worthwhile

and significant contribution to society going forwards. Can this ever be measured? No, as the danger of constant measuring is that we might turn out robotic, miserable beings who are only good at passing tests and worried about marks – so stressed out by the next test that we miss out on so much of the inbetweens of life. I truly believe education at Pridwin must not just be restricted to Maths, English, the Sciences or Technology, but also must be about learning character. Luckily Pridwin values create character, things that can’t be measured, such as curiosity, creativity, imagination, risk taking, sensitivity, adaptability, motivation, drive and enthusiasm. But in order to achieve any of these our boys need to be comfortable and happy within. Only then can we really practise and live out our Pridwin values.
So how do we live out our Pridwin values? I have my Pridwin bag here (let’s think of it as our heart and mind and soul) and I want to hypothetically pack it with the eight Pridwin values so you boys can see what you carry every day in your hearts.
In alphabetical order, who can tell me what our first value is? Yes, balance. At Pridwin, there is no doubt that there are so many opportunities for boys, whether it be academics, arts and culture, music or sport or even in the hidden curriculum. The secret is, however, that we need to find that balance of doing our best in everything we do. If we can do that, manage that, understand the need for balance in our lives or personality, it will be for the better. And so we can pack the value of balance in our bag.
What’s the next value? Yes, collaboration. At Pridwin, there is such
wonderful collaboration everywhere we look – with our boys, our staff and our parents. There is simply no greater truth than the fact that the quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers and at Pridwin this is no exception. We have such a wonderful staff and I have no doubt that our camaraderie, teamwork and laughter are the reasons we have such happy boys and such a happy school. For this, I thank all the teaching, administration, estate and cleaning staff – a strong chain is made up of many links.
Thank you, too, to our parents, guardians and grandparents for the continued support and collaboration you show in the school, becoming actively involved or supporting your boys in matches, plays, functions, etc. whenever and wherever you can. It is only very occasionally that we forget we are all on the same side, but I personally only value constructive feedback, ideas, as through this, mutual respect is collaborated and can be achieved. I think we can safely put the value of collaboration in the bag!
The next value is? Yes, empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Our boys show an amazing willingness and ability to be able to empathise and respect each other’s race, religion and social standing –they are the teachers of the future for us. Our school is transforming and I am delighted as to how the Transformation, Diversity and Belonging Committee and its work groups, not to mention parents, have embraced transformation at Pridwin. Thank you to Neo Mamathuba for her leadership in this area and I am confident that we will have a transformed school in the very near future where every boy, teacher and
parent feels like they belong! So let’s pack empathy away.
The next value is? Yes, humility. We need to stay humble and remind ourselves of our privilege. We must never take anything for granted and continue to always give. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our community partnerships, St Vincent School for the Deaf, our bursary programme and all the other outreach programmes that we are so involved in. In the bag goes humility.
The next value is? Yes, independence. We are fortunate that due to our independence Pridwin is able to offer so much more than just our academic curriculum. There is no doubt that by the time our boys are in Grade 7, they are equipped with skills to fly in their respective high schools and beyond. Remember boys, as I often say, “Be the best you that you can
be!” No one else can do it for you, you have to do it. And so in the bag goes independence!
The next value is? Yes, leadership. We have the most amazing leaders at Pridwin and I would like to thank Winston Monale, the chairman of the Board for his service to the school, incredible insight, bravery and support. To Andrew Warren, the chairman of the Finance Committee, thank you for your unwavering support and guidance in the finance department. Thank you to Lisa Jarvis, the PPA chair; your passion and love for the school is amazing and we are delighted you will be joining the Board next year. Thank you, too, to the PPA executive team, the class representatives as well as the Pridwin Foundation Board under the leadership of Thabo Seopa.
Thank you to my executive team, Ross Grimley, Joanne Glendinning,

Mdu Ndlovu and Katherine Rattray. Thank you for your leadership, friendship and support and, might I say, the sometimes necessary glass. I really appreciate our partnership and value the fact that I can always rely on you. I would also like to thank my PA, Terine Moodley, for her support and discretion. I think we can safely say that leadership can go in the bag.
The penultimate value is? Correct, respect. Our boys respect our school, they respect our teachers and they respect the environment. We also respect each other without any prejudice over race, culture or religion. I would also like to pay respect to three staff who are leaving us. To Shannon Coles who is emigrating to Australia, thank you for being the most wonderful all-round teacher. You have made your mark in so many areas and will be sorely missed. To Sue van Staden who will be returning to her alma mater,
Kingsmead, thank you for being the most outstanding teacher, you will be a huge loss to us, but we wish you everything of the best. Lastly to an intern, Rose Tsoafo, who qualifies as a teacher and takes up a post at Grayston. Congratulations, Rose, and we know that Pridwin has given you the skills to become an amazing teacher. Respect goes into the bag!
And the last value is? Yes, responsibility. We live in a very unequal country, but at Pridwin we are so fortunate, but with that comes responsibility. We have to be responsible for ourselves, our families, our school and our country. It is our duty to make sure we are making a difference. If we can do that then responsibility goes into the bag!
As the Grade 7 boys celebrated their Leavers’ Lunch on Saturday, I looked at this wonderful group of boys who were celebrating, almost as much as their parents, their Prep School years and memories – their wins, their failures, their struggles, their accomplishments – there were several unscripted moments during that day
– a whole year all playing marimbas; a whole year all dancing on the stage; a whole year all high-fiving each other as they walked down the tables to collect their gifts; a whole year playing outside in the rain; and a whole year who will go forth to the next step and chapter prepared for life. Pridwin’s values did this. Our school motto says Ex nihilo nihil fit, which means out of nothing comes nothing … these boys have embraced and packed everything into their bags and are truly ready for the future.
When the school creates righteousness in the hearts and minds of children, the child’s mind is ignited with thoughts and they in turn grow wings to fly.
Teaching is the most optimistic of occupations. We have no way of looking, as Banquo says to Macbeth, “into the seeds of time, and say which grain will grow and which will not”. But, we put the world before our boys and challenge them to make it theirs. A teacher’s obligation is to provide his or her students with means, not ends. We provide opportunities for them, offer
them a dash of enthusiasm and a pinch of good humour, with the hope that their imaginations can feast upon the banquet laid before them. Ann Landers, a child nurse who wrote for the Chicago Sun in 1941 said, “It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings.” Pridwin does this!
And so there we have it, I have my bag, packed with the Pridwin values and I challenge you all to do the same. Powerful values that will make us all richer, better and more successful in more ways than we could ever imagine. This is what a Pridwin boy has in their bag.

I hope your holiday is balanced, collaborative, empathetic, there is lots of humility, independence and leadership and that there is always respect and responsibility, and I look forward to seeing you all in the new year. To our Grade 7 boys and families, keep our Pridwin values close by and good luck!
Thank you!

The Pridwin staff embodied the spirit of love on Valentine’s Day by dressing in shades of reds and pinks. The break was spent enjoying a special tea with their Pridwin Pal.

Human Rights Day is an important day in the South African calendar. It is a day where we commemorate those who participated in making our country a democracy, those who stood up for what is right, despite persecution. It is important for us to share this history with our boys so that they can understand what South

Africa has struggled for and value this. We teach this history during Social and Civic Justice lessons. This year our boys spent some time thinking about the rights they enjoy and about the responsibilities they have in upholding these rights. Each boy traced an outline of their hand and wrote their ideas on to this.

The Grade 7s led the Heritage Day Assembly by introducing the speakers and performers and by explaining aspects of our South African heritage.

Speakers or poets from each grade delivered presentations about their individual heritage whether it was local or from around the word.

These were interspersed by a performance from the staff community marimba group and a traditional dance by the ladies of the estate staff.

The day ended with a rousing rendition of our national anthem.

SELWYN MARX’S FAREWELL
Selwyn Marx, who retired as Headmaster in 2020, was not able to have a farewell that year due to Covid. Relaxed measures in 2021 meant that we were able to invite him back to the school and bid him farewell.

COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT

The Pridwin Community Garden is a wonderful initiative and has seen a huge transformation since its inception at the end of 2019. Originally an old clay tennis court, this area is now a thriving vegetable garden comprising 24 beds with a variety of vegetables and flowers growing within.

The garden is tended to by the Estate Staff, the Grade 4 boys and the Environmental Education students from St Vincent. Responsibilities include weeding, planting, making scarecrows to chase away the birds and watering their vegetables on a weekly basis. Once the vegetables are ready for harvesting, they are used in the Pridwin and St Vincent kitchen for lunches, and the excess food is given to staff, parents and boys to enjoy. There is great eagerness to tend to the veggies and even greater excitement when the Pridwin Community can reap the rewards of their efforts!
The community garden continues to blossom and has really grown into a beautiful space within our school. The idea behind the community garden is to ensure that our boys have an outside learning area, have a project that they can get their hands dirty with and that we have an area where the greater Pridwin Community can come together, work together and enjoy being together.

As the year drew to a close in 2020, all of us at Pridwin hoped that the new year would usher in a return to ‘normal’ teaching. Alas, this was not the case. With numbers rising over the December holiday, the second wave resulted in the school year starting online. The resilience that the boys had developed in 2020 ensured that they could continue to progress, despite the continued uncertainties that prevailed. The boys were able to seamlessly pivot between online music lessons and face to face lessons throughout the year. It was amazing to see how they had retained their knowledge and were using Google classroom, signing into Meets and communicating independently with their music teachers as if it was second nature.
With continued restrictions on gatherings, much of the department’s performances took place online. The music department presented two sets of showcases – two Junior and three Senior Showcases in April and the same again in September. A whopping total of 373 videos were submitted of boys showing off their progress for these concerts. The Johannesburg Festival for the Advancement of Music also took place Online, and many of the boys sent videos in for this event. Music exams continued digitally, with close to a hundred exams being submitted by Pridwin over the course of the year. ABRSM Music theory exams were written digitally for the first time ever, which called for much needed support from the IT department. Kingsmead hosted both a choir and an ensemble festival online, with our Senior Choir, African Ensemble, String Ensemble, Senior Jazz Band, Rock Band and the Grade 7 Marimba Group participating. Our boys have certainly learned how to record themselves and have flourished within the digital realm.
The third term finally saw the return of live performances. The Senior Jazz Band continued to rehearse outdoors on the Junior Astro, entertaining the
Junior Phase boys playing on the pirate ship, as well as parents in the car park on a Tuesday afternoon. The boys’ hard work was evident in their first live performance in almost two years, when they performed for the Riviera Grandparents Day. We also returned to the auditorium for our Lunch Hour Concerts and Soirees, which for many of the boys was their first ever opportunity to perform in front of a live audience despite having had lessons for almost two years. Having been prohibited from hosting these concerts for so long, we were reminded again just how important it is to provide our boys with the opportunity to develop their performance skills.
The third term also saw the debut performance of the Pridwin Community Ensemble. This ensemble, led by Mr Mugerwa, provides an opportunity for any member of the Pridwin community to rehearse and perform together, from boys to estate staff and even Mr Lees. This ensemble performed for the first time at the Heritage Day celebrations and were asked to entertain the Grade 7 boys and their parents at the Leavers’ Lunch in November.

In October, Dylan Price (Grade 4E) was one of 23 pianists selected to participate in the prestigious Atterbury National Piano
Competition. The competition is aimed at pianists between the ages of 5 and 19. What makes this performance especially notable is that Dylan had only had a handful of lessons in Grade 3 before the school went into lockdown. Despite the continued upheaval that the pandemic has brought, his continued commitment showed that talent in combination with hard work will create wonderful opportunities.
Our final highlight for the year was our Christmas Celebration. This year, the Grade 3 and 4 boys performed a Christmas Celebration of Music and Poetry, with the Grade 5 to 7 boys presenting our traditional Carol Service. These two events allowed us to really show off the incredible musical talent that Pridwin has to offer. As the boys came together in song, we were once again reminded that music has the unique ability to unite the whole community.
As Vaughn Fleischfresser, a wellknown music educator writes, “the Music Department is an alternate universe where pupils are often unrecognisable from who they are outside of it. The shy become confident. The agitated become calm. The lonely become included. The quiet become heard. And the lost become found. Music reveals the real child.”

Ned the crocodile is crying. He has a toothache. How did he get his sore tooth? How is he feeling? What will he do?

Ned arrives at the dentist. Oh dear! How did the dentist react? How does the dentist feel to have a crocodile as a patient? How is the dentist feeling?
The dentist is working inside the crocodile’s mouth. Write two short sentences each for the crocodile and the dentist of what they are thinking.
The dentist fetches a large injection. What is the dentist saying in two short sentences? What is the crocodile thinking in two short sentences?

Ned the Nile crocodile is happy! Why? What happened? Was his dentist visit a success or not? Why don’t we see the dentist again?
Dentist: Okay now I will put the medicine in him. Okay this is the end.

Oh Mr dentist! Can you help me? I have such a sore tooth! I am not feeling so well. My tooth is so sore! Can I sit on your chair?
Oh my gosh! There is a crocodile in my room! What must I do?
I am so scared but I will fix your tooth if you don’t bite me.
Now you can sit on the chair and I will fix it.
Croc: This is so sore but I hope it won’t hurt after this!
Dentist: I hope he is not tricking me. He said he would not bite me.

Croc: Maybe that will fix my tooth. I wonder how he will put it in me.
Phew my tooth is better! Now I can be free to do whatever I want. I’m not hungry anymore!
Mr dentist I have a very sore tooth!! I have a bit of horn in my tooth!! I am feeling so sad. I need you to see if it has to come out!

It is a crocodile! I have never seen a crocodile as a patient. I am sooooo scared I just want to run!
Croc: I am hungry but I do not want to eat him! Dentist: Please don’t eat me! I just want to live today!
Croc: Will this hurt? I don’t know. I will just do it! Dentist: This will take the pain away. Just go to sleep.
I am all better and the dentist went home because it is night time.
Leo Berman
Oh hi Mr dentist. I think yesterday I ate 16 fish and one of the fish scales got in my tooth. Please help me. I am so sore.
Oh dear! There is a crocodile in my office! OMG let me get my IPhone and call the zoo or get my AK47 and my momosniper!
Croc: Oh yes my tooth is much better! Dentist: I am so scared! Please do not eat me!
Croc: That is big! But it will help my tooth get better.
Dentist: I just want to get this done! This will help his tooth.
I am all better. My tooth is good. That dentist was good to me and he was delicious! I’m not hungry and that’s great.
Andrew Costa
Mr dentist please help me with my sore tooth! I was swimming and a Catfish zapped my tooth with its whiskers. Can I lie down in your bed?
OMG it’s a crocodile in my office! I will fix your tooth but you must promise not to eat me. Aaahhh aaaaahhhh shouted the patient.
Croc: Is everything okay? Ow ow! I can’t hold it open for much longer.
Dentist: Don’t close your mouth yet. Everything is okay but your tooth is cracked.
Croc: That looks like it will hurt but if it will help I will do it.
Dentist: This is very heavy. It will help with the pain.
I am all better! If my tooth is sore again I know where to go.
Amiri Dakile
Mr dentist please will you help with my very sore tooth!! I was swimming and I bumped into a mini crocodile and he punched me in my tooth! I am in so much pain!
Oh a crocodile! Please don’t kill me! I can help you, just don’t eat me. Take a seat.
Croc: Oh! This is going to hurt!
Dentist: Let’s hope he doesn’t close his mouth!
Croc: Oh can we just get this over with! Dentist: This will numb your tooth and make it feel better.
I am better! That dentist was delicious!! I can eat again and if I ever have a sore tooth I know where to go.
Ihsaan Domingo
Oh Mr dentist, please will you help me? I have a sore tooth! I bumped into a rock and it hurt my tooth! My tooth is so sore! I am in so much pain! Please may I have a tissue to wipe my tears? Will you help me please?

Oh my! Oh my! I am so scared! I have never treated a crocodile before! I am terrified! Oh my goodness me!
Croc: Hmm I am feeling hungry but if I eat him nobody will help me. So I think I shouldn’t eat him.
Dentist: I hope the crocodile doesn’t eat me, although if he eats me, nobody will help him.
Croc: I know that it will hurt but I know that I am taking the pain for a good reason.
Dentist: Yay! This is the last thing I’ll have to do before he leaves. Then I won’t have to be so scared.
My tooth is all better and I can eat properly now. That’s why the dentist is gone. My meal was delicious!
Rayhan Essay
Oh Mr dentist! I ate a deer and it got into places in my teeth! Oh please! Ow! Ow! Please can I have an appointment?

Croc: This is not going to hurt. I am going to be a brave crocodile.
Dentist: This will not hurt. It is an extra big injection for your big mouth.
I am now so happy and singing a song because my tooth is fixed. Mr Dentist is kind and I may go and visit again!
Niam Ranchod
I am very sad because I got a mouse with a nut in my tooth, and I tried to eat it but the nut got stuck in my tooth. I am feeling very sad and cried so much that I made the river Nile. I should go to the dentist!

The dentist is feeling very nervous!! Okay, you can come in. Which tooth is it? The dentist starts feeling excited to work on the crocodile’s big teeth.
Croc: I am really trying to keep my big mouth open. I am feeling tired!
Dentist: Keep your mouth open please, WIDE OPEN!
Croc: What is that? Is it a bottle or something? I need to think of a plan.
Dentist: This may hurt a little. Stay calm, Mr Croc!
The croc then successfully ate the dentist. I take great pride in my tricks. Thank you, he sings!
Ameer ShabneiI have a sore tooth because I bit a bird. I feel so very sad. I will have to call the dentist.

There is a crocodile in my OFFICE!!!! I am so scared about this, what do I do?
Croc: This is so so SORE!! I am not happy about this.
Dentist: Is he growling at me? I am feeling very very nervous!
Croc: I really think that this is going to hurt!
Dentist: This is NOT going to hurt, you can trust me Crocodile!
This was a huge success, my tooth is so much better!! I think it is time for a song. The dentist was so relieved that he went straight home.
Musawekosi SkosanaI am sad, my tooth is in a lot of pain. I am very upset. I am going to have to go to the dentist!

Oh my gosh!!! Call 911! I am so scared. Did I say that out loud? Run for your life.
Croc: I hope that he knows what he is doing!! Dentist: I really hope this croc is not hungry!
Croc: I really hope that this does not hurt!! I feel scared.
Dentist: This won’t hurt, earlier I put something special in so the injection does not hurt!
Thank you Mr Dentist. I hope that you can hear how happy I am in my song singing. I will be sure to visit you again!
I did not brush my teeth, not I have toothache. I am such a bad crocodile because I said not to brushing teeth. I think I must go and visit the dentist NOW!
What, a CROCODILE!!! That crocodile must not eat me. I am very scared that it will bite my leg. That crocodile is not allowed to be a patient of mine!
Croc: I am scared, I wish that my mom was here with me. Dentist: I am feeling very scared of this big toothy mouth.
Croc: Okay, right! I am brave. This will not hurt. Dentist: Do not be scared. This is a big injection but it will not hurt.
I am so happy that the injection is done and that my tooth is better. These people and Mr Dentist were very good to eat!

The Grade 0s and 1s took the audience on A Magical Journey across the African plains. They sparkled and shone on their outdoor stage as they executed their performance of “Twas the night before Christmas” with outstanding gusto and grit. Their immense singing and dancing talents were highlighted as they kept the audience captivated throughout. Well done boys, we were so proud of you all.

The Grade 2 and 3 boys spent “A Night in the Library” for their concert.

After finding themselves locked in the library by Mrs Nic, they journeyed through the adventures of many of their fun favourite books. They joined Alice down the rabbit hole, only to land up singing along with Mary Poppins to “A Spoonful of Sugar”. They met silly aliens who were so proud that they managed to find themselves some underpants and Charlie who hoped to find the Golden Ticket. Then there was The Gruffalo which was all about Mouse and his tricks and The Grinch definitely tried to steal Christmas. The boys excelled on stage and showed their incredible talents acting, singing and dancing. They learnt that books can create the most wonderful adventures and experiences, and A Night in the Library can create some incredible memories.

SENIOR PRIMARY

I woke up on a freezing claustrophobic cell and I was just about to have my dreadful porridge and a freezing metal tray. Only getting 10 minutes to eat. Then only getting 10 minutes to shower in cold water. Then the long day’s work would begin. I had to mine hard limestone for the whole day. The day was finished. Thinking I was going to get something nice for dinner but instead I got rotten stale bread and rotten beans. Now I was going to bed in my small cell on the floor. I would wake up and the horrible day would start again.
CurtinI felt horrible in my tiny smelly cell and the routine I have to do every day, woken up by a noise on my cell bars, eating horrible disgusting porridge and looking at the blinding limestone quarry all day. Then having to go to bed and sleeping on the freezing cold floor and with a tiny blanket. And I can’t get any sleep and not brushing my teeth and not having my own shower. Then going to my cell again. And not seeing my letter first. This was the average day in prison.
My life in jail was challenging, painful and difficult. I am going to tell you about just one day in prison and then you will feel my agony of when I was in jail. I woke one cold winter day to the banging of a security guard. I woke with a start. I had 10 minutes to eat my freezing cold porridge, have an icy cold shower with no towel and then put on my old dirty clothes. I got out of my cell and went to the quarry to break rocks. It is a tough job. My eyes were sore, my back was sore, it was a menace of a job! When it was 2 o’clock I went back to my cell for a disgusting bowl of soup and beans. Then I had to go back to the quarry to break more rocks. After a gruelling day I get my supper (pap and gravy). It was disgusting! After a brutal day I go to bed on a rug in my cell. That is how painful one day in jail is!

Life in jail must be dreadful. Cold floors, tiny cells, and disgusting police. Walking past the hideous smells of dirty cells and waking up to slobbery porridge while thinking about a freezing cold shower with other prisoners washing their clothing attire. Going to work on the other side of the island to get the minerals from the blinding limestone quarry. Heading for dinner to eat filthy beans. Lying in bed on a hard stone floor. You wake up by a guard banging on your hard door.
I woke up, the guards were knocking on the metal bars. After that we sat down to eat our cold wet disgusting porridge, on a freezing cold rusty tray. I could still feel the cold air rushing through my spine. Later that day I put on my clothes and went to work. I worked tirelessly for hours on end only making tiny dents in the blinding limestone quarry. After we got back, we had rotten carrots and baked beans straight off the can and went back to our jail cells to get unchanged and go to sleep.
Eoin GaffneyI’m in a Robben Island cell 1936. If I had to describe life in Robben Island with one word it would be cold. First, I’ll tell you that Robben Island is super cold. It's in the Atlantic Ocean by Cape Town. Now I’ll tell you about the cell it’s 7 feet wide with no bed and all you have to sleep with is a small mat on the floor with a desk and toilet. Now your day, you start the day off with breakfast, you might think it’s a nice meal but no it’s cold beans or oatmeal which is really disgusting. Then you start working in a bright limestone quarry. Now a limestone quarry is where you mine limestone but if you work there for too long, you can go blind. Because limestone is bright enough but with sun it’s much brighter. That's life on Robben Island.

Have you ever been in prison before? Well, I'm about to tell you. Once upon a time in a cold prison cell there was a man called Gaba. He felt trapped in that ice cold prison cell and the terrifying policeman was treating us badly. But luckily a few months later I somehow found a way to escape. After that Gaba was the President of South Africa.
Gopal PadayacheeMy prison cell is extremely cold. In the blazing hot sunlight, we sadly must mine limestone.
Eating soggy frozen baked beans. In the morning we must shower (so cold) with 0% privacy.
The steaming hot sun sets our eyeballs a blaze. We’ve been feeling super boxed up with no escape at all.
We felt like we are being bullied by the security. Lying on the cold mat wishing hopefully for a cosy blanket.
Hamza WadeeI woke up to a loud bang on my door. It was another day in the horrible prison. The cruel prison guard shouted at me and told me to have breakfast. For breakfast there was ice cold porridge. After I ate, everyone had to work. As I walked outside to start my job of mining, the sun shot into my eyes, but I was used to this. Every
day since I came here, I have been mining at this heap of bright limestone. It makes you go blind. Until lunch I was mining away at the mountain of limestone. For lunch we had some soggy beans and burnt toast. After lunch we had to work until supper. When it got dark, they locked us up and slid a cold bowl of porridge under my door. I ate and slept and that’s how life is in prison.
Harley LarsenNelson Mandela felt very stressed in prison and wouldn’t have any fun at the showers because everyone is looking at you and you have to look at them. He didn't have any fun digging the beautiful white limestone and get blind from it. His cell number was 46664 and he was claustrophobic in his tiny cell. He slept on a disgusting mat and was not allowed to talk to other prisoners. He had to eat cold dirty porridge in the morning and the policemen were so mean to him! Prison is not a nice place so don’t do anything nasty.
Kevin JewellI was forced into a car, I arrived at the police station a few minutes later.
I was petrified but then I saw Solwazi, I wasn’t so scared anymore.
We were forced inside, I saw all my friends. The policemen forced us all out the back door and into the back of a truck. 4 hours later we left the truck onto a boat for a few more hours. Then we got off the boat and onto land. Reggie, Eoin and I tried to make a run for it but failed and were tackled to the ground and we were chained up in a truck. An hour later we arrived at a prison, and we were escorted to our prison cells. I was in cell number 1379. Eoin was in cell number 1378 and Reggie was in cell number 1380. Duncan was in cell number 1381 and Solwazi was in cell number 1377 and Gaba was in cell number 1376. We were talking to each other and eventually the guard said go to sleep or you will be executed, so we all lay down under our warn blankets and fell asleep. We
were woken up at 2:00 in the morning by the guards banging on our cells and we were given cold sloppy porridge. It was so disgusting, then we were sent to the limestone quarry. And that process repeats daily!
Marwan ShabneiIn the filthy limestone quarry, it was so blinding all I could see was white. It was so well built. We took 10 days of hard work then I must go to my cell. It was so bad I got a plate of pap and my cell number was 2265625. It was so despicable and so scary. All you do is eat and sleep and that’s how life is at Robben Island.
Mohapi NtseareIt was a cold night in what they call a “bed”. Before I knew it, it was lights out. I’m all alone. No friends, no communication. I felt disconnected, anxious, angry. I had no power, but there was hope. A group called the ANC fought for equal rights. I joined the fight to stop apartheid. It was a long deadly struggle but using the armed struggle we did it. Nelson Mandela became president and we all lived happily ever after.
Muhammed AsvatLife in jail, I was sent to jail on Robben Island. Nelson Mandela would have to sleep in the cold cell I worked in sadly. We had to work in the limestone quarry. Sadly, we had to eat

disgusting meals. Nelson Mandela was blinded by the shiny white limestone while working. We showered in a cold shower every day. We didn’t have proper things like toothbrushes, beds, and meals. Nelson Mandela felt sad and lonely. The prisoners weren't allowed to talk to each other, and they weren’t allowed to speak. Nelson’s cell number was 46664.
Rivan NaidooIt was another raw arctic winter night sleeping in my claustrophobic cell. I’s in prison cell #29/12/10 for multiple drug and murder cases. I have been sentenced to 30 years of prison. I have served 20 years already, so I have just 20 years to go. For breakfast I get thick, sloppy porridge, for lunch I get cold corn and for dinner I get raw fish. The showers that I had were super cold. The guards would make us do mining in the quarry on wet and cold rainy days. That’s a day in my life in prison.
Ryder Beck Sam HabershonIt was a devastating day in apartheid where I got arrested for protesting and fighting with Nelson Mandela for the rights of others. Unfortunately, we were sentenced to prison for LIFE!!! Me and Nelson were out in separate cells next to each other. Nelson was in cell 46664, I was in cell 46663 … but on the bright side I was beside him and we were tired now so we both went to sleep. As soon as we were woken up, we got this disgusting porridge so very dry on this rusty old tray. As soon as we were done, we were sent to mine limestone. The bright yellow sun ruining our eyesight. Hours later we had our dinner which was old bread from the dustbin. Years after years of this we finally and thankfully were released from prison. After we were released, Nelson soon became the first democratic president. On the other hand, Nelson 2013 died a very sad and heart-breaking death never to be forgotten.

As I'm in jail now, I have no idea what to do in my draughty, dark cell. The food is disgusting, like a mouldy lemon in cat food and old gravy. I refuse to eat most of the time but sometimes the guards wait and watch me with a stern stare, forcing me to eat the disgusting lump of mould. Anyway, I’m starting to feel a bit lonely down here. There’s been no one to talk to since, maybe, a few months ago. Every night, I lie in the corner, cold, lonely, and somewhat afraid, hoping I won’t wake up the next day. But, of course, the world showers me with nightmares, horrible nightmares that force my eyes open to endure the torture of the days to come I miss my family, my home, and my sould which I seem to have lost somewhere along the way. But where? There is a gym, with a broken-down treadmill and weights that I think weigh less than 1 kg. So much for staying exercised and upbeat in jail. My world is so tiny now and I feel like I haven’t seen daylight in weeks. I feel … unwanted. Like nobody cares anymore. I don’t think anyone does care. But one day, hopefully, I'll get out of jail. That day would be so good …

The horrible Robben Island. My new icy-cold home is as cold as Antarctica. It is called the scary Robben Island.
I am very annoyed like a Tauros pokemon because I miss my wonderful family and warm home.
I don’t understand what I did, this is terrible.
Solwazi ZunguI woke up in my cold dirty bird poop smelling jail cell. And my good friend Nelson Mandela was already awake writing a letter to his family. We could hear the guard coming to our cell. He said OUT! We are going to eat your meal for the day. Today was like always cold sloppy porridge. When Nelson and I were done we went as quickly as we could to work. Today we are weeding and mining rock. Oh no I said, we were going to the limestone quarry. I’m blinded from that thing said Nelson. I just wish we had sunglasses. Well said Nelson, 1 week and we will be living a normal life again. Ja, I said 1 more week of bird poop smelling cells, sloppy cold porridge and blinding limestone quarries. 1 week later. We just got released from jail and our family were waiting for us with a big hug.
I describe jail at Robben Island as very lonely. Everything was lonely. You would sleep in a sad, painful, cold cell. You would wake up from a guard angrily hitting your cell. You would eat a disgusting dish of food, in the cold morning. You mine until your arms fall off. You mine a pure white limestone cave, blinding you at first sight. They will give you a 5-minute break. Then you are back to mining. That’s your whole cycle for years.
Ziya IsmailNelson Mandela spent 27 boring years in prison. The only fun activity was making limestone. Straight after he would eat dinner and go to his spaceless numbered cell 46664 and go straight to sleep on his uncomfortable mat. Then, he would wake up very early in the morning due to noise made to wake the prisoners. He had 10 minutes to get ready and eat breakfast. Then go to work at the bright limestone wall. He would get lunch and go back to work and finish late at night and the cycle would repeat for his 27 years in jail.

This morning I woke up to the guard putting a stink bomb outside my cell. I ran to eat breakfast. I said eew. This morning I was upset because for breakfast we had animal brains. It was so soggy and really damp. Would you eat it? The warden stuffed it into my mouth! I slammed it into his face. He was walking as slow as a tortoise that was half asleep. We all said ha ha he turned coocoo bananas. We tried bursting open the stinky sewerage. We burst it open when the ugly warden was walking past. We never saw the next moment as he flew into space and dropped his keys. One of the inmates got the keys and opened up all the cells. When we got out we got caught. We were not scared because a Military team was watching us. It is so unfair that the other people were living life normal. How UNFAIR! I wish I could leave prison. Can I tell you what our punishment was? Mining limestones without sunglasses. And the sun reflecting off the limestone hurts your eyes badly. They even had an eye doctor checking our eyes every hour. It was so much punishment. Let me tell you how I got taken to jail. I was playing cricket and the police pulled up and arrested me. Bye bye!
… wham I felt pain oh the pain then I passed out. That day was horrible but now I’m in the glitch secret service it’s very dangerous but it’s worth it, my assignment is anti-poaching.
Duncan Webb

Every day I awake half heartedly. It's cold, dark and there’s a lot of suspense. Dias hurry up, that’s the ugly fat warden I looked up angrily and glared at him, out to die yard asseblief nie, wat, nie you will get 100 lashes, he’s got a huge whip said Dainty my best friend. So don’t give a
Every day I am woken up by a fat prison guard who bangs loudly on my prison cells bars. He opens the door and puts cuffs on my wrists and marches me to the kitchen. We always got served horrible cold lumpy porridge and cold tea dribbled over it and the occasional fly legs was disgusting and disappointing. We were then taken to the limestone quarry where it was so bright it hurt your eyes. We were given blunt spades too. At the moment I had an idea I started sharpening my blunt spade on the rocks I stood there for hours sharpening my blunt spade until it was blun no more. Then I started hacking at my chains and suddenly it broke! I was free! I ran into the mine in a frantic sprint and I came out the other side. I made a raft from bamboo then I heard shouts, the guards were coming! I jumped onto the raft and made my escape. The End.
siren sounds. I go down to the limestone quarry. My sandals are worn down so I am basically barefoot. My shirt is tattered, my pants have holes in them. I don’t get sunglasses so I am very slowly going blind. It is very annoying that I got in prison for fighting for what’s right.
Lehakoe RalebitsoThe world is cruel and unforgiving. No one said life in prison was easy. I heard sirens wail time to get up another day in prison. I get out of bed and go get another meal. I can’t remember when I last had a warm meal. I feel like I have been here for a hundred years. Prison is like that. I feel so old when I am only twenty years old. The

It was a cold rainy day in prison and for breakfast we had cold disgusting beef porridge and a cold cup of coffee. I just wanted to get out of here. My friends Abdullah, Zayaan and Zohaib said they had a great idea. They had a cunning plan to make a great escape. We could collect limestone, sell it and build a raft and tools to break out of prison, but the only problem was that we were on Robben Island. So we had to build a raft. They already made material like bags and planks. The next day we collected a lot of limestone, our bags were heavy. We were tired so we went to sleep. We woke up in the middle of the night and made summies and dug out of the prison. We got on our raft and floated away, we did it, we escaped! When we got to shore we slept on the sand. The next day we changed into clean clothes and sold millions of limestones and became rich. We bought a big house and started working at normal jobs and lived a happy life again.
My life in prison filled me with repugnance. The toilets don’t work and smell, sinks have leaks that drip at night when you try to go to

sleep, tired from working all day just breaking limestone and not talking to anyone, feeling like you don’t occur in life. When the cold breezes come and go, you shiver and you are anxious, scared of never seeing your family again. You smell the rotten food from the cafeteria and sewerage from the not working toilets. The racist wardens poking you hard with sticks, sometimes even taking your pillow just because of your skin colour, the guards don’t care about you. I really want to see my family and can’t wait to get out of prison. I have lost track of life and have not seen any news, to be honest life has no purpose in my opinion. I feel no purpose and have no feeling of love. The next day I went to the cafeteria and the guards called me to follow them, they said there was something for me. I couldn’t wait, it was a letter that said “luca”. It was my family. In the letter there was a picture of me as a kid, it filled me with hope, I’ll be happy once again.
wanted to rout so badly but I knew I would be killed if I did. This happens everyday but the cruel racist wardens never stopped
Max BaxterI’m woken up at 4.00 am by a whip. It’s freezing cold.
My cell: The cell is so small and feels far from everything and everyone. I really hate it so much here. The guards are so mean. They hit me every day. It feels like I’ve been here forever. The beds are as hard as rocks. I would rather die than eat the food here. I have to work in the mines where the lime is so bright it damages my eyes. I can’t wait till my sentence is over but there are 7 more years left in this living hell. I’ve been here for the last 12 years. When I’m released I would have lived 19 years in prison.
Nicholas SardiI wake up every morning at 4.30 am on a cold, hard stone floor. I am tired because it is difficult to sleep with my sickly cough. I get dressed in my ragged, torn clothes. I then eat my tasteless, small, watery porridge. I am lonely and I miss my family terribly. I endlessly mine the mineral and pass it to the other prisoners. We have to mine 100kg of that mineral every day or we get punished. I am dying of dehydration because we don’t get water breaks. We do this the whole day. It is now another freezing night. I am feeling anxious about tomorrow because it’s another day of torchering. I have to face it again for years ahead.
Molemi Monene
One gloomy morning I woke up to the warden. It was not pleasant. She poked me with her cold metal covered stick. She said get up Luka. It was time for breakfast, so I went to the cafeteria. For breakfast I got lumpy thin porridge and cold tea. It was crazy how bad the food was. Then we all got into our cold cells. Two hours later we were allowed to go to the courtyard only for 5 minutes but. Then for another two hours. We then had food. It was the same as breakfast. After that I went to sleep. I had to be in prison for another 10 days more. So I was very excited to get released. Would get released on Friday. The End
Luke SmithymanThis morning I woke up exhausted to the person everybody hates the most, his name is Willy Wonka. He is the meanest white warden in the prison. He throws in a dirty towel and disgusting food. I was getting anxious as he took my bold head and slowly put it in the terrible toilet. We were so miserable but we were powerless. I
Being in prison is dreadful, and if you’re wondering why, let me tell you why. Being in prison earns you very limited and appalling food with water. You have to work in a grubby limestone colliery where the sun is beaming and melting your eyes. The wind is raw and your clothes are disgusting. You don’t see your relatives unless you're lucky/ At dinner you get stone hard pap with gravy and tea. You mustn’t go to prison ladies and gentlemen, because every day is the same, unless you leave or die.

This morning I woke up feeling cold and miserable. At 8.00 o’clock we went to breakfast and the porridge every day was lumpy and just disgusting. After breakfast we had to go outside in the freezing cold and plant maize. After about an hour we went back to the cells which smelt like sewerage and mould, and I nearly passed out. It smelt so bad. I was in the cell alone for hours feeling sick and stressed because 10 minute before dinner we would get lashed with a horse whip five times. After getting lashed we went to dinner and we had the same food every day which was revolting old pap and two day old soup on top. After dinner we went back to the smelly cells and every night I would have to lie down on the cold and hard floor with no blanket. It;s going to be a long night.
I always wake up at five. Paranoid that the crazy warden is going to get me. Everything is cold as the night sky cold gooey porridge, freezing showers and ruff toilet paper. The only thing that is warm is the water we drink. My inmate is innocent like I am. There is no privacy whatsoever. Supper is a little better than breakfast as it’s peas and pap. During the day we work in the lime quarry. It is hard gruelling work and it saps a lot of our energy. Lunch is the worst of all. We have one piece of stale bread and a cup of warm dust filled water. Then we go back to the quarry and work till
the end of the day. Then we go back to our cells and read a little. “Lights out” shouts the warden and we go to bed.
WarmanI began to wake up very cold, then the warden opened my cell and I went for breakfast. The breakfast just tasted awful. I had very cold porridge I felt like throwing up but if I did I would definitely get in-trouble with the warden! After that I went to work and like everyday I was miserable and angry and most importantly scared. While I was doing my work my eyes were burning with the sun. It was so hard to do my work. It hit around the evening and as usual I was miserable going to eat my disgusting dinner. It tasted awful after that I went to bed. I took my warm clothes off and knew tomorrow is just going to be a miserable day. But not if I escape. I went to tell my friends my great plans. We would escape from an air cell, we would land on the island and then we would swim to shore then we would steal a car and run. So we did all of that and no one got caught, well except one of them got caught and got shot but at least we got to shore and we won’t be in that terrible place again.
have nightmares throughout the night. It is horrible living like this and I am starting to perish. Living here is not easy but I will try and keep myself alive, no matter what happens. The worst consistent thing that happens is me missing my family very badly. That is so horrible. The last but not least thing is the one word I would describe Robben Island, is cold cold food, cold sleep, cold clothes, cold air and much more. It is not nice living here.
Zaheer AngamiaThis morning I woke up and felt my back aching from my sleep on my concrete bed. Sorry to not introduce myself, I am a prisoner on Robben Island. It is impeccably gross living here. I am going to tell you about my routine for my everyday life, please try not to fall asleep. So every morning, I wake up and feel my back is hurting very badly. I sometimes think I have broken my back from last night’s horrible sleep. I go to the bathroom, the warden sometimes walks past and laughs at me in a very evil laugh HAHAHAHA. After that I go to have breakfast and it is horrible gross lumpy porridge. Then I have to go and do something very boring and very painful. I have to go do mining for 6-18 hours after that. I feel like my hands have broken; And worse I get teased and hurt by the strong big guys. I go back to the ugly building and have a horrible supper, so gross. I go to sleep but it is horrible sleeping on my very uncomfortable horrible bed. I have a horrible night’s sleep and
I was woken up that morning like every morning in a wretched place, with the loud banging of the guards baton on the metal bars. It was time to get up. Fast. Only 5 seconds to get to the yard for a vigorous exercise routine. Then, an icy cold shower. I was then given watered down pap for breakfast. My tummy rumbled. I couldn’t remember the last warm satisfying meal. I was longing to see my family as I was disconnected from them for a year. It was unfair that I was in this miserable prison because I was fighting for what was right. The siren blew and it was off to the lime quarry. I was cold, the wind from the ocean blowing on my ankles, my clothes off and ripped, my shoes worn down till they were nearly socks. I had no sunglasses so my eyes were getting slowly damaged by the limestone, reflecting the sun into my eyes. It was time to come up with a plan, to communicate with the outside world!

My life in prison was extremely miserable. I was extremely scared and the horrific guards were mean. I got claustrophobic and really trapped. I had no control of my life. I felt really betrayed and had nothing left. I got really bored. I got stressed and anxious. I would have rather killed myself than stayed in there. It was so cold, I would have shivered to death. My cellmate was so annoying, I could barely sleep. The next day I woke up, we had rotten fish and warm water for breakfast, sounds nauseating right? I’m used to it by now. Overall this time I feel it’s normal. After a few days I heard a mysterious voice. The horrific guard said: you’re out. Now I eat normally and own a business. I live happily now. But I always still remember the rough time I had sitting in that horrific cold prison.

This morning I woke up freezing cold. Shortly after I went to collect my smelly breakfast. I felt trapped and unplugged from the world. I felt terrified when the guards walked past my jail cell. My jail cell smelled like a dumpster. In jail they impertinent you. I felt the need for revenge. I did not like to go to work and I did not know how long I would stay in the jail cell, for the guards did not give me anything to do. I was starving, no more food. I wish I could be free. I was bored, everyday I only worked, nothing fun to do.
I woke up very early this morning at 1:00AM because a big, mean, enormous policeman came and hit me with his baton!!! I went to the cafeteria to have my breakfast. It was very disgusting (it was dirty pap and gravy. There were a lot of ants, cockroaches and parked down prawns!!!). I vomited and didn’t eat it. The rest of my bad day was utterly bad, because I did absolutely nothing. The guards gave me no more food or anything to do. I was very bored for the rest of the day. Day after day, night after night, the guards still didn’t let me out of jail (*sighs).
This morning I woke up from my hard and dense bed. For breakfast the warden who is chubby and angry, comes to my cell and wakes me up and gives me mash and gravy, which makes me anxious to eat McDonald’s. My cell is so tiny, I get claustrophobic, paranoid and trapped. My miserable life in prison was not worth it for.

The Leopard
Sun blazing
Every animal tired but not the leopard Slowly stalking its prey
Waiting on top of a tree quiet as a mouse Ready to pounce from above Furry Cubs at a distance Waited for the impala to be right under him Then he jumped lightning fast Onto the unsuspecting impala
As all his friends bolted tails tucked away Their horns are katanas yet they still ran away The impala dead before he knew what hit him
The leopards were mid feast
When a pack of hyena arrived The smell of blood must have attracted those hyena, thought the leopard
The Cubs scattered

Then the fight ensued
The leopard out numbered
No chance of victory, he ran up the nearest tree The hyenas took the corpse and ran off into the abyss
Hyena what thieves.

The gift is something that not many people have. To find it you have to show them your desires. Make sure you’re the one because they will make you run!
No one has seen it except for me because it’s hidden away from everyone’s sight.
The gift is anything you could wish for but wait… make sure you don’t have any flaws because they will have something to test you all.
You will go through hell and back to make it but if you’re able to get it you will see it’s magnificence but take care because it’s danger is unmatched.

This argument is to discuss whether our wildlife should be protected or not. I think that wildlife should be protected because they help the tourism industry and as a country we gain income when people from different parts of the world visit our country. There is also an opportunity for zoologists to learn and interact with animals and nature. Children love to go to places like zoos and game reserves to watch the game rangers feed the animals and make them do cool tricks. However, it costs a lot of money to preserve our wildlife.
The first point in favour of this argument is that wildlife helps to attract tourists to our country. When tourists book flights, make bookings at hotels and order delicious food at restaurants, our businesses grow. These small activities help with job creation in our country. When tourists come from other countries some of them visit the Kruger National Park to see the Big Five. In 2019, there were 1.8 million people who visited Kruger Park. During the Coronavirus pandemic, there was a 40-60% drop in the amount of visitors that visited the park. This means that the park couldn’t get as much money as it used to. When tourists come to our country, they sometimes visit Table Mountain in Cape Town or the warm oceans in Durban. This also helps businesses to earn money and creates employment for people. In the tourism industry there are about 95000 people who have jobs in Durban. In 2019, 5 billion rand was generated by visitors going to Durban. This helps our country to grow and be a better place.
Secondly, protecting our wildlife provides us an opportunity to watch and learn about our
animals. It is a priority to look after our wildlife so that children in the future will be able to see and learn about our beautiful animals too. Children and adults love to go to zoos and animal centres and if there is no wildlife to see, we will not be able to go to these places to learn about them. During the lockdown last year, there were safari episodes on television to keep people interacting and learning about these precious animals. In 2020, during the Coronavirus pandemic the company Wild Earth decided to keep people learning about wildlife. They decided to make live videos and that soon became very popular and Wild Earth had about 3 million viewers a month. In the first month of lockdown, the number of viewers increased by five times. That means more people wanted to learn about the wildlife even though they couldn’t go to the game reserves.
However, against this argument it costs a lot of money to preserve the animals. All of this money could go to families who need homes and food. Did you know that the amount of food one tiger eats per day can feed about 40 children. A study in 2012 by BBC estimated that it would cost 76 billion dollars a year to preserve threatened land animals. This money could be spent on researching viruses and diseases that affect humans, like the Coronavirus.
In support of this, animals help to keep a balance in our environment and they help our country to grow. They provide us with knowledge and education about our world.
In conclusion, I feel that we need to protect our wildlife because it helps the tourism industry incredibly and helps to create jobs for people. It is also vital that we protect our wildlife so that people in the future generations can learn about them. I feel that if we didn’t have the wildlife as part of our lives then we would be missing something so special.
Harry SerrurierShould we protect our wildlife?
We should protect out wildlife because, by conserving our wildlife, we’re ensuring that future generations can enjoy our natural world and the species that live within it. To help protect our wildlife, it’s important to understand how species interact within their ecosystems, and how they’re effected by human influence.
Secondly, climate change is slowly increasing average temperatures. One of the most noticeable ways that climate change is impacting wildlife is by changing the time of natural events. With warmer temperatures, flowering plants are blooming earlier in the year and migratory birds are coming home from there winter grounds earlier in the spring.
However we should not protect our wildlife because extinction is part of evolution. And with death of out wildlife there will be more fertile lands and more space to expand cities and civilisations. This is the 6th major extinction, it is part of evolution.
To conclude, I feel that we should protect our
wildlife because the wildlife plays a massive role in our ecosystem. Without them it will collapse!
Hiyaw BeyinShould we protect our wildlife
The first point in point I would like to make is that we should protect our wildlife because they have families and friends too. They have their place on this planet and as do we. And if we keep killing they’ll go extinct and we’ll never see our wildlife again. How would you feel if you were being chased down or hunted, not good right but that’s how they feel.
Secondly, did you know that animals plant 90% of our trees? Wildlife keeps the food chain stable which balances our lives. Animals help us in our daily lives bees pollinate, llamas watch farms and squirrels help our trees take root.
However, against this argument, the reason animals are dying is because we’re concerned about our environment. Eventually, all animals die but we can stop our environment from dying. Did you know that elephants destroy trees without caring, the crown thorn fish is slowly but surely destroying the great barrier reef and cattle produce 14% of the greenhouse gases.
But in a personal opinion I think that these creatures are amazing we should never kill them.
Kayur Bhaga A mutated red wolfReporting from park wood, there is a mutated red wolf fighting a mutated raccoon that a truck driver almost knocked and it was chaos. Catching this on camera the reed wolf killed the raccoon, the red wolf spots a lady and boy and goes after them.
The lady and boy ran for there lives! “red wolf are endangered” cried the boy. The red wolf stopped to the barking of a sausage dog behind a gate, the red wolf took down the gate and destroyed the house, ate the sausage dog and now its going after me.
The red wolf is chasing me but i got into a building and I was safe, not for long before a mutated T-Rex comes after the red wolf. A normal t-Rex is the size of a mutated red wolf but a mutated T-Rex is 5x its size. The red wolf tries to get close to to the T-Rex but the t-Rex is to big. The red wolf finds more red wolfs and they take down the T-Rex.

Jim the lucky lucky Giant Otter
Our amazing wildlife: Should we protect them or not?
On the 17th of December 1994 at London zoo there was an incident of when a Giant Otter went missing. Nobody has found out where he went and how he escaped. The remains is an empty Otter cage that nobody has bothered to visit in months. Except Blake, Blake was once Jim’s best friend Blake made time every day after school to visit Jim. But now he spent most of his time after school climbing trees and he also started playing hockey for Pirates the club.
But that was not all he did, he became an investigator.
Blake searched the zoo normally from 4:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon in search of his lost friend. One day Blake came upon something extraordinary, something that could really help his search, it was, well it really was just a hole but that hole lead to a tunnel and that tunnel lead to… well I’m not too sure but we better find out.
Blake clambered in the hole, it was already 5:03 and he should be heading home now but this was just to exiting he had to find out what was down that tunnel. The hole was about one metre deep and ½ a metre wide. Once Blake was in the hole and about to start crawling in the tunnel a short sharp voice said “WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THERE!” it was Joe the zoo keeper “YOU BETTER GET OUT BEFORE I COUNT TO TEN! 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...9.. good now you should go home now, the zoo is closing.” Blake got back on his bike and rode home.
When Blake got home he went straight to bed. After school the next day Blake went straight to the zoo, he continued crawling down the tunnel. It seemed like hours in the tunnel, Blakes knees were starting to hurt so he decided to take a break. Blake sat down in the tunnel drank some water and then he heard a strange noise coming from further down the tunnel it sounded like a baby having a bad dream. Blake took his torch out of his backpack and shone it down the tunnel. He couldn’t see much just miles and miles of tunnel. Blake kept on crawling down the tunnel, the tunnel started widen and soon Blake was running instead of crawling.
Blake stopped, and right in front of him was Jim. Jim lay motionless on the tunnel floor, then Blake walked forward and tapped him on the back. Jim opened his eyes and closed them again. So Blake picked him up and started heading back to the entrance of the tunnel. Once Blake and Jim were at the hole he put Jim on top and then climbed up and out of the enclosure. Blake raced to the zookeepers office and told the whole story.
Joe was amazed, he had never experienced something like this in his whole life. Blake , Jim

and Joe went to the zoo’s vet.
She wasn’t happy “he would have been killed if this boy didn’t save him, these otters are endangered” she kept on repeating in an annoying manner. In a few weeks time Jim was good as new. Blake made sure that the enclosure was fixed and everything went back to normal.

The hockey stopped and the trees got a break, until the next time our hero Blake.

My mother is always happy, she is cheerful at the slightest joke. But when I have to do something, she is as suborn as a stif ruler.
My mother is always friendly… well except for when I disappoint her. She is serious to. Sometimes she has to bring me down, back to my roots!

Coming to school each day
Entering the class with a smile
Bringing the fun to the door, It’s enough to blow me back. The kindness and wisdom shoots out like arrows

I’m wounded but in a good way As confidence and encouragement pours into my body,
And fear shoots out like blood in an open cut. It’s the one who teaches me, The one who gives me strength That I use throughout the day
The person who cares about me, Is Miss Kuhn my amazing teacher! And that’s why she is The one who makes me smile.

The hunt is on!
Swift and stealthy It hunts and chases its prey. It calmly waits and stalks in the grass, Using its spectral vision as the night goes past.
Fur camouflages between the trees, Legs ready for action, Sounds of moaning and groaning, Drool pouring down its mouth. A clueless prey unaware of its fate, Wandering around like bait.
Suddenly, it pounces from the dark!
It zigs and zags and drags Bite! Then a second strike. Hear the cries of the unlucky prey Struggling as it takes its last breath.
It devours the lifeless corpse, The smell of musty blood lingers in the air. The spotted predator is a peacock, elated by its

Why we shouldn’t save wildlife
I think that we shouldn’t protect wildlife but instead get rid of all the poachers. I believe in this because if we are not protecting all endangered wildlife, then what’s the point. We are only protecting 9% of all endangered species in the world and often hear about how poachers are killing our endangered wildlife.
On the positive side of this, if we protect our wildlife, people in the future will be able to see the endangered species in their natural habitat. If we protect the endangered wildlife you can learn a lot about them. Learning about wildlife and protecting them creates 400 000 jobs. And if we keep some wildlife in captivity you can find cures for viruses and diseases. Endangered animals contribute to the field of medicine.
Killing endangered species also impacts the ecosystem. The more animals are killed, the more it damages our environment and can result in plants dying or other animals dying of hunger. If we don’t protect wildlife people can lose their jobs.
So if I had to decide whether to protect wildlife or not I would say yes. The reason I say so is because we depend on our ecosystem for survival. We need police to arrest poachers and have more security patrolling areas where the endangered species are. We must remember all the animals that live on
Earth. Animals need their space and if we want to protect wildlife then we need to get rid of poachers.
So if you ever see an endangered animal and see the poachers hiding in the bush call for help and also call the police because we we shouldn’t be hunting animals for fun because we should only be hunting for food.

Rushir NagarThe End Is Coming…
Have you taken your time to admire all the small details in our environment?
You close your eyes because you don’t want to know the truth that humans are harming the earth!
Trees being cut down, factories producing fumes, why does no one care about our planet?
Icebergs are trees falling into the abyss, trees keep us alive!
How much more?!
Global warming, water levels rising, plastic pollution, who made plastic?
I can’t take this anymore!
What’s the point of humans other than making the earth disintegrate at an alarming rate.
There is nowhere to run or hide from what we have done to our incredible planet.
The end is near…

The Gift That I’d Been Hoping For
I woke up at five in the morning
Just like any child would on Christmas Day.
And there it was Sitting under the tree
The gift that I’d been hoping for.
Well, what looked like it Felt like it Smelled like it Even had the same measurements as it. This had to be Just had to be The gift that I’d been hoping for.
I waited and waited for six o’clock to come
As my Rubik’s cube was the temptation reliever holding me Back Rattling away as I wanted to open it. So that I could finally have what I desired The gift that I’d been hoping for.

As the time finally came to open my gift it was not
The gift that I’d been hoping for. I sulked and sulked My cube was a fidget toy to vent my disappointment
Until I realised this was, in a way the Gift that I’d been hoping for.

My mom is the best.
I like looking up to her and hanging out together. When I listen to one of my mom’s favourite music it reminds me of when she used to dance to the song.
She is as cute as a panda.
I like the way she spends a lot of time with me and my family.
She likes running a lot and every Sunday she likes to run in the morning and run 6km outside our gate.
Sometimes I like to run with her because I like to run with my mom.
Sometimes me and my mom like to eat lunch together.
My mom cooks nice food and me and my sister love it.
She loves having breakfast outside.
She loves playing tennis and basketball. Every day she smells nice.
She likes talking about her sisters and her brother.
I sometimes cook her breakfast.

The best women in my life
Her tears are my sadness, her smile is my joy Can you guess who it is yet?
She is the head of my body, without it I’m not functional.
A hug from her feels like you are getting a hug from a cloud, only better.
The taste of her food is better than any restaurant’s food and any chef’s food.

The Predator in my house
My dog
He is the Lion I am the Zebra
I see a cute little dog on the outside
But on the inside, he is a tiny beast.
I hear his beastly howling.
I smell his smelly thick coat of fur.
I taste his horrible slobber all over me.
I feel his black and white with streaks of brown Fur all over me.
I am his prey.
He stalks me like I am his prey. He thinks he is as Vast as the moon
But he is as tiny as my desk.
He is as cute as he is deadly. He is the predator in my house.
When I open my underwear drawer he has
Chewed all my underwear.
He thinks he is the king of the Jungle If that were my house.
When I go to dinner
My Dinner has already been eaten. There is a tiny monster living amongst me. There is a Predator in my house.

When he went to hospital, I prayed for him at home.

Popcorn - SACEE Winning Poem
Pop! Pop! Popetty pop
Leap and shake and shake and leap, The golden seeds as they get poured in the Pot Ting! Ting! Ting! And transform
into colossal white shapes, Popetty pop
Banging and bursting, Popping and shaking Popetty pop, The buttery flakes,
as you see them pop out the pan, as they turn themselves inside out
Pop! Pop! Pop!
The popping has stopped. It’s time to eat our delicious treat
Let’s pour the treat in the bowl Here come the children running like a
stampede of elephants Pop! Pop! Popcorn!
It crunches like branches cracking
It is delicious!

On A Break - SACEE Winning Poem
Breaking news.... COVID-19 outbreak in South Africa and just like that we’re on a break

No more weekend sport matches for who knows how long
No more rush-hour traffic, the only thing stopping You on the road police are checking your license and registration
Early morning Zoom sessions
Secretly in our pyjamas and wolfing down our breakfast every little second
Our teachers look away Our dogs whimpering when we tell them no more walks outside for a while
Suddenly, loved ones are just living in our memories
Now Late nights listening to Cyril, begging he’ll ease away on the restrictions And just like that we’re on a break.

All the gifts we have been given
When getting a gift, there’s always a pleasant feel.
There are many types of gifts you can get. They’re not always the ones that you can open or unwrap…
But… the ones that we can feel in our hearts. Plenty of people think gifts are only given for celebration…
Numerous amounts of people don’t even realise they have been given the most important gifts of all…
The Gift of Love, Kindness, Family, and Friends. But most importantly, the gift of being here today!

The army
The army in Afghanistan helping people escape. Bodies everywhere.
After the terrorists murdering everyone.
I am in the plane piloting.
Still helping people(gunshot) me= oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, no, no.
Then I jump out of the plane (don’t know why). Starting to glide through the sky.
I take my sniper out (name: Barret 80).
Then (gunshot, gunshot, gunshot, gunshot, gunshot). Me wondering where they came from.
Then for some reason my sniper changes into an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade).
I shoot the missile in the RPG.
Then I hear the missile explode. Then I wake up from my dream

The real monster - SACEE Winning Poem
When dawn breaks the day starts with a stutter
The machines start up with the growl of a tiger Your lust for power has gotten to your head
You ride your steeds of steel
Turning air into diesel smog
The dismal sky has turned to an ashen grey Chopping down forests is what you do best
Making room for trees of concrete Destroying the land you put your throne on Only leaving a trail of destruction Letting your audaciousness follow You fill the seas with toxic waste Littering the beaches with grotesque grime The spotlights blare into the smoky sky Never looking down at the cruel actions Then you still call nature the monster
Siyamthemba Shabangu I Love Singing
I have lots but my favourite is singing. I love singing and I sing every day and it drives my brothers crazy because I’m good at singing. They know I have a lot of gifts, but they don’t like that my favourite is singing.
They like how I play soccer while looking like the jolly fat man, and they say I play better than my brother, but I am trying to get a six pack at school and at home, they’re a lot of talents that I have like singing playing soccer better than my brother while looking like the jolly fat man and I’m flexible (just know that was not all of them). You probably wondering why singing, well singing really free’s me and me heart and tells me never to give up to always follow my dreams and if I could sing in class I would get a 100 % for every subject in the school and singing calms me.
They’re a lot of songs that are nice but the first that comes to mind is don’t play by Ann Marie and KSI. KSI is a YouTuber and made a song that’s what I want to do be a footballer that’s made a song on YouTube.
One of my favourite singers and song writer is MICHEAL JOSEPH JACKSON my favourite song that he made is beat it. They’re many other genres like hip hop rock and Amapiano well I don’t think it is a genre, but I like it and bust a 929 and Kabza well they’re DJ’s and singers.

The Grade 4s and 5s put on the successful production of The Wonderfully Wacky World of Roald Dahl. Two Pridwin boys “visited” the Roald Dahl museum in the village of his birth in Great Missenden. Yaasin AllieIt’s dark and cold and terribly lonely. It feels like thrashing around trying to keep from drowning all the time. Oxygen is hope, and it takes so much effort to find enough just to exist. If you spend long enough down there, you start to forget. Then when you escape you feel calmness of the wind with the glare of the moon. With the softness of the light with the warmth of the chimney. That’s brought down with the dark corner that few can escape. With all the lonely night you forget about company then you fall in the hole again and feel melancholy and give up.

The

hunt
of the leopard
The big paws pounding on the ground
As he looks for something to eat
His razor blade teeth waiting for the Slightest movement.
A slight gust of wind passes his furry body.
With his distinctive nose he smells something. Boom! he’s off into the hunt
His highly intelligent nose led the way.
This beautiful majestic creature bouncing up and down looking for food.
The leopard is now sprinting, he is destined to find food soon.
But the starvation of the leopard is draining his hyper energy, he won’t last much longer. Finally he catches his dinner.
It is a beautiful impala that this hungry leopard will be eating tonight.
He climbed up into the beautiful baobab, and now he can enjoy his delicious dinner under the colorful sunset.
Siya Dlomo Lion - SACEE Winning Poem
Apex predator, top of the food chain
The Lion, so strong and fierce
They’re careful to secure their reign
To think, unhunted and powerful to this day
The thrill of the hunt, not the fear of the prey
Their burning passion, fearless warriors
The adrenaline rush, superb assailants. Always hit their target.
They’ll never have to use their lives to pay And still, I am glad
I can say I’m not prey, I’m the one who’s preying on.
I’m the Apex Predator, still today. The one without fear
Inspiring chaos to take hold. Frozen in place, Free snacks
I take meals from my pride Or from a jackal.
Doing things you can’t imagine Eggs for breakfast like a human would. My home is the shade of a tree
A safe place you will see My biggest killer is the heat There may be challengers Who may be my son. Till then we will wait, Because death is written before, It’s fate.
I’m a Lion strong and proud A fierce killer with a roar

James Hefer The Nemean Lion
The Nemean lion with its huge teeth and thick hide that couldn’t be penetrated by arrows was frightening the people in the land of Nemean. Many had tried to slay the beast but none succeeded. People even tried tricking it with poisoned meat but the lion ate them instead. The lion was immensely strong but Hercules was even stronger. Hercules had gotten the lion into a trap where he strangled it and made a coat of its hide.
Zachery Ichikowitz Confusion
As the man looks on in confusion
His mind trambles. Trembles in fear. Trembles in anger! That he may never understand. Confusion is a maze that few may escape. The mind a paradox that none can solve. Even though we think we can. The brain is complex Too complex For all to understand fully. Every single moment could be a dream A Dream of inception. A Dream of thought. A Dream to believe!
Oliver Lamb Branches of the sky
Spacious tranquil and warm with the dead trees branches reaching up Like roots in the azure . It seems almost living; the way the branches weave webs across the sky .
The dusty landscapes stretches out with no apparent life, except the grass shrubs and trees.
The trees hope that the approaching clouds will supply the much needed rain and relive their parched roots. The few ants or termites in their burrows are also hoping for the rain
This will create mud which they will use to expand their homes .
When the rain comes the the trees will grow new buds
and seeds shall form and fall.
The seeds will then wait for the next rain to send up their sprouts and this will continue until the rains come no more.
Njabulo Mabena Hungry Leopard
The leopard chasing its prey, but he is not successful.
Realising, running immediately is not is not the best option.
As he watches humans killing his kind he realises that to not run but hide instead
He never shares with other leopards He keeps the food for himself, he leaves the others famished.
He is always in disguise with his surroundings.
The prey are happy for a moment, and in a blink of an eye, they are running for their lives.
A hungry leopard hunting its prey.

Zachariah MtiniThe Perfect Day
As the warm sunny day comes through The vibrant vivid people buzz around excitedly As the young ones stare in awe at the biggest statue of all
With it’s amazing complexity they all want to fly like the seagulls themselves The is no misery to be spotted here With restaurants, candy stalls and games and more
The flags blow breezily in the slow wind And as the clouds race further in the brilliant blue sky
And the seagulls fly higher and higher and higher As the screams of applause continue And as the white poodles and bulldogs and hounds run around with jubilant looks on their faces
They also have the occasional wrestle Also running away from their owners And as young sneaky teenagers are laughing out loud
Nothing could ruin this brilliant day

To Eat or to be Eaten - SACEE Winning Poem
One of the last places on earth that wasn’t littered with buildings and streets.
The sun was descending slowly over the hill as the grass danced carelessly to the sweet sound of the wind.
A clueless baby impala was enjoying delicious
grass completely oblivious to its grim fate.
All of a sudden the grass moved making way for a predator with teeth as sharp as knives and claws that could pierce the sky.
It stalked its moving meal for it was made to kill and the impala to be killed.
Its eyes focused on one thing and one thing only the buck.
So focused that a fly landed on its eye yet it didn’t flinch.
The river stopped flowing, the wind fell quiet even God himself spectating.
The park fell into silence then it was interrupted by thundering of the lion’s footsteps.
Its road sent the shy buck into a frenzy, but before it could even blink the teeth of the beast penetrated its neck pinned to the ground and secured its meal.
For God made this animal out of stone, not clay, to ensure that no creature on planet earth could do any harm to this Apex predator.
The Kruger then slowly made its way back to its previous self, the moon climbed the sky bringing forth the night to liberate the day, grass danced carelessly to the sweet sound of the wind as a large lion feasted on its well deserved meal.
Leo Watson The Dead TreeThe dead tree is at peace.

Its fear of lightning is over.
The arboreal is a peaceful soul. It is so silent so peaceful.
The tree feels left out. Nobody cares. It’s lost in thought. Why is the rain not coming?
RAIN PLEASE COME!
The loneliness of the land is depressing. There is no living animal.
The ants are painful eating at my bark. When can I die?
My life is full of misery and pain. My branches are smashed to bits. Where is the hope, the restfulness. I hope this day ends.

They do everything a predator needs to, But are called just scavengers, Yes they will eat something already deceased but, the apparently extraordinary lion will too, Hyenas have jaws of steel and the power of a sandstorm. they can hunt almost perfectly Even sometimes more successfully than a lion. Hyenas kill lions now and again, So really are they puny?
All animals important to the food chain.

Lions in the extensive green grass, waiting for the heard to begin grazing The they make their dash - a young antelope The hunt starts
The lion sprints out He captures one And then he devours

The vultures waiting for them to shift away They then start to digest the remains of the antelope

Let this be a message from the earth. Our future is slipping away from our grasp. If we don’t do something soon the world will wage war on us and erase us so we will never set foot on our planet.
Or maybe the earth will reset like it did years ago before. Will it heat up and bring a new age. Will our fossils be discovered years from now.
And all we know is if we don’t do something now
We will lose trees, grass, flowers, islands, fish, whales, penguins, polar bears, The Arctic Fox, The Poles themselves will disappear. We must do what we can to save what we love and need. To rescue our future even if we have to sacrifice what we like and love.

The Jaguar… from roars to climbing trees to sneaking up on prey and exterminating them. One of the rarest species in the world. What a fascinating cat that lives in the Amazon of South America. They can live till 12-15 years old. How fast can this wild cat go, a whopping 80 km/h. The weight of this strong critter 56-96 kg. From the tip of its nose to the end of its tail it can measure up to 240 centimetres. Jags are the most fierce animals I know with the strongest jaw of all the big cats all around the globe with a bite force of double the strength of a tiger. This unique cat has spots like a lovely leopard. When you think of a Jaguar’s strength you wonder what does it eat, a diet rich in meat and fish even deer, tortoises, iguana and other Amazon animals. This beast hunts by sneaking up on its prey and pouncing on its quarry’s neck suffocating it then decapitating it to become the dinner of the king. Now that is quite intense. If I had the chance to meet this remarkable animal I would take it. Why is this creature so hard to find you must say? Its coated with spots shaped like rosettes making it extremely hard to catch a glimpse of this beautiful creature. Oh when the time comes when I get to see you, what a glorious day that will be!
Lukhanyo Sotyantya I’m glad
The things that make me glad is to have a good life and a good family.
I am also glad for having good friendship with my friends and with other people.
If I did not have good friends and a good family I would be no one because my friends and my family support me no matter what. Now my life is a star in the sky.
The other things that I am glad for is to have a good education and to go to this amazing school Pridwin.
I am also glad to have my PS4 but I am hoping to get the PS5.
I am very glad to also live in this beautiful environment with all the beautiful animals around the world.
Life is not a video where you can just do anything, you have to make wise decisions and you must be careful with the people you trust.
The other things that I am glad for having a god to protect me through life. I am very glad that I have a new baby sister and she means the world to me. The people that I trust and the people that I love are the people that I am glad for.
Being glad is not just a feeling, being glad is when you really feel grateful about the things that you appreciate.
I am glad to be alive.
If you love being glad well I am with you.
The leopard is a living killing machine.
As its natural beauty caches the eye. You can stop and observe its beauty for hours.
As it stalks its prey patiently, And then POUNCE!!!
Its claws are like Velcro sticking to the antelope’s skin. The antelope twitching and kicking about.
As it drags its prey up the tree, Its cubs have an amazing feast.
They rip and tear open the antelope’s flesh
As the blood runs down the trees trunk, the leg tumbles down the tree trunk to the floor And the hyena crunch on the bone
The leopard feasts to its hearts content And the vultures come and try to take a peck The leopard nips at the vulture’s bony legs
Even though the amazing spotty leopards are so selfish They are still so beautiful to watch.
Alex Dobrescu The Nemean Lion
Dear diary
Hercules here, this is the very first task I did. I’m very excited but there will still be eleven more tasks. The king sent me to go kill the Nemean Lion, which had been taking women. The lion is big and scary with a menacing mane around his head; his fur is impenetrable to arrows. I went to the den and released the women.
Its taking a nap, its breath gives me goosebumps. I accidentally step on a twig. OH NO! The lion woke up and roared and I scared it to the back of its cave. It was in a pouncing stance. It raced towards me. I narrowly escaped and rolled to the side then I stunned it with my club and strangled it. I wanted to make a cloak but couldn’t pierce the skin. So Athena took one of the claws and gave it to me. The Hydra will be waiting for me tomorrow and I’ll be ready.

Departure is a greedy man swiping at the objects and people we love.
We want to go with but we have the chains of guilt holding us back, it is very sad as you lose someone you love but it is better for them.
Departure can be a step into the new world, a way of living differently and embracing a new mental state, it is a step in independence and it can be hard but departure can mean being higher than you were before in terms of education
It can be the best thing for your loved one but departure can be different things departure can come from hardships to a new beginning and a new light and it can come in different forms as someone leaving, and as someone becoming a new person it must be something to embrace even if it is not what we like or not what our normal is, it can be the hard things like moving or letting someone go, the time where you miss your old life where it was simple but will go right no matter what,
It is for the best and will gradually get better it causes a struggle between emotions and you but we need to stay strong and fight back the emotion even if that means crying but its fine to have emotions, its how we deal with things, its how we conquer them, its how we find ourselves and our personality, It’s enabling you to become the stronger person, the better person, to find out how you will be even in the future when it will all change, we might be different on the outside but on the inside, we all are the same and we cant leave our love behind, we cant depart from it, so keep it close

Mukona Marageni Hercules diary entry20 Augustus 200B.C
Dear Diary
I am warning you, if you aren’t Hercules I will come find you and kill you. Anyways the Nemean Lion was a weak opponent, his skin was the only thing that was powerful and that’s because it was so thick not even an arrow could pierce it.
I knocked the Nemean Lion out with my club and that was one of the easiest things I had ever done. I then strangled the beast to death just like I had done to the two snakes Hera put in my cradle when I was a baby. I then tried to rip of the skin with my teeth because my task was to get its skin but that didn’t work. All of a sudden, a goddess appeared and it was none other than the wisest god Athena. She told me that I should use the claw of the lion so I pulled off the claw and removed the skin of the beast. It looked so beautiful that I decided to wear it as clothes. When I showed the skin of the beast to my cousin Eurythesus, he told me to show him what I had from a distance. Scaredy Cat!
I felt like Eurythesus was joking about these tests being hard but later found out that they were. I also felt annoyed that Eurythesus gave me such a task, what a waste of time. I also felt people were weak. How could you get eaten by this weak beast? Anyways on to the next task.
Goodnight and don’t snore.
Zaeem Laher Killer instincts - SACEE Winning PoemPredators, roaming around the world. Sharp teeth, drilling into bones. Venomous spines, puncturing skin.
Slicing claws, offering scars for life.
Tipped stings, firing deep into fragile skin.
From raccoons to polar bears, They are execution machines.
Lions in Africa, brutal teamwork to assassinate in the untamed Savannahs.
Tigers in India, stalking unlucky prey.
Anacondas in South America, Swallowing animals whole.
Shape shifting murder beasts, terminating in any form. They have one purpose in life, To kill, never stop.
Michael Costa Menacing PredatorsPredators are jets, zooming across the world; The breakneck cheetah, the rapid eagle, the stealth owl. They are all different in their own way,
Some are cunning, some are creepy and some can camouflage.
Some predators live in the water, like an electric eel, while others stay in the air, like a vulture or a hawk.
Or on the ground, like a tiger, bear or fox. They all adapt to their environment whether it is the desert lake or sea.
Or high up on the mountains, even in the trees.
They are as cunning as a criminal, more quiet than a leaf and as dangerous as a gun. They are intelligent calculators.
Predators have razor sharp claws, bristling coils, fur and venomous fangs.
They’ll kill you in one strike, with their thin-iced temper. Or they’ll smile at you, like a Nile Crocodile.
But don’t get to close, or they just might go BITE!!! Their jaws will crash on you, like a border falling down a cliff. Some may be small, like the Black Widow Spider, or even as big as the Megalodon.
So just remember,
When a predator smiles or stares at you…. It means hey kid…I’M COMING FOR YOU!!!!!
It’s strange how one photo can make you feel like you’re there with the tip of the building high up watching down on the people who work all day and the cattle are relaxed while a slight breeze hits the trees.
It makes me feel relaxed, calm, quiet, relieved and happy.
Unconcerned, laid back, carefree, free and easy. The elegance of the trees and the great size of the building and the garden is an incredible work of art, it’s amazing how one picture can do that which makes it beautiful.

Joshua Pennington Mother Nature
Wind whistling, massive trees waving, opera singing birds.
All in one marvellous habitat lives animals, plants and trees.
The plants create oxygen for amazing animals and Humans
Well we release carbon dioxide for plants and trees
The beautiful greenery providing plants and animals with delicious food, drinkable water and comfortable shelter.
We make horrible plastic, fake wood and metal to survive this amazing nature.
Yet we treat this Nature so harshly when we use Fake Wood, plastic, metal and polystyrene. We endanger different species
But we still have a chance to save the plants and animals In this habitat.
We can treat Mother Nature with respect, Don’t cut down many trees Don’t make more livestock Our environment is beautiful Let’s not destroy it or take it for granted.
Amaan Mohamed Mother Nature is furious
The breath of mother brings life, while our breath is polluted and toxic.
Mother is depressed, her children are dying and losing their homes.
Fragile pilot bees try to pollinate the wilting and withering flowers.
Wildfires and pollution are erasing away our jungles and forests.
The trees dying, animals hurt and she is now crying , her tears falling as tsunamis trying to stop the environment dying .
Building expanding, gasoline rising and people whining, when is it going to stop, when we are all extinct.
Leaves from flourishing to decaying, stumps from healthy to poisoned, We are destroying our own planet for pleasure and power, but at what cost.
Mother Nature has had enough, no more deforestation, no more slaughter and no longer the destruction of the ozone. We have to change our actions before Mother turns on us. We have to act fast, now.
Oliver Thompson Music Is Love, Music is hope, Music is AfricaThere is no audience, no one to listen, but they play through the twilight.
They are filled with love, filled with hope.
The room is an echoey cave filled with the exquisite music coming from their instruments. Guitars, Violins, Accordions and Tambourines, all playing beautifully in unison.
There may be no audience, but their love for music and friendship for each other empowers them.
They are filled with joy and happiness, but most importantly they are filled with love and hope.
They represent the beauty of their culture, even though no one is watching or listening.
They are filled with colour and emotion, no one can stop their joy.
They proudly show off their culture through their charming music.
The beauty of their culture is more astounding than the glorious Protea flower.
As they know that though their music is beautiful, their friendship is greater.
The sun now starts to rise showing through the beautiful colours of fiery red, warm orange and golden yellow.
There was no audience, no one to listen, but they played on still.
The sun continued to climb, it freed the musicians and the people of their town, their music was finally heard.
Pierre-Alvaro Ngankeu Our EnvironmentOur environment is beautiful and extravagant It is a symbol of earth and necessary to its euphoria.
The environment is the mother of the earth. It is very peaceful and extraordinary.
It is an incredible part of the earth.
Yet we take it for granted every single day. We build more and more factories ruining its structure.
We make more and more petrol and diesel cars to make it even worse.
Even the simplest of things harm it such as the plastics we use when shopping. The pencils that we use when writing.
Even the papers that we use harm this special element.
It’s not only the land that is suffering from our
negligence.
The water is also becoming more and more polluted with each passing day. Due to the amount of plastic, we leave in our waters. We can prevent this by taking more care of our environment.
Using less water and choosing paper over plastic will also help save these waters. Using both sides of a paper when writing and using a pencil until it is a stub are all little ways to help and together we can save our environment because even the littlest of changes can make a huge difference.
Fredy KameniThe Unity Of Art
The satisfaction of it makes me beam. Pleasantly Parametric, the pencil is a stocking lion stunning but sharp. The apprehensive, artistic and creamy craft that M.C Escher has made is dazzling. The apprehensive, suspicious, wonder that you can draw your own clothes. The smooth detail in the hand is extraordinary. There are different types of art, clean, bold, realistic and crafty but it doesn’t matter there are all art. Art is always beautiful parallel to a peacock. Like M.C Escher always said, “He who wonders discovers that this in itself is wonder.”

The bird‘s head is a human’s head. In the bulb or glass he is imagining his future from the bulb or glass and he is imagining himself as a full human and he looks like a professor and he is studying something so I think that his whole body will eventually change into a full human’s body piece by piece every time he does something or it will change randomly and the beauty of his future he thinks that it will be a great future he will have fun, do things, relax, work and also work on some things but also have fun at the same time while he is working and he will work with other people also

Our beautiful green home
The glistening green leaves that hang from twigs of trees
The water stream smoothly flows across the riverbed
There are countless contrasting animals and plants hiding in their habitats
Flowers of many variants dancing to the wind
The plants give us oxygen as they photosynthesize
Joyful animals trotting peacefully through the grass
Predators await their time to pounce
Prey is seeking help, anxious out of their minds
Wind gushes swiftly through the air
The scorching hot sun that blazes upon us
The glistening blue sky being flooded with clouds
Happiness and joy leaks through the air
Colours of amusement and never of darkness
Trees stand like titans but as still as rocks
In autumn the dazzling leaves drop from the sky
Everything has started to go wrong since deforestation has began

Elegant colours from bright to dark, Flowers shining a bee’s attraction, We all give and get, Exchanging breath for breath, All life has divine and terrible, Some have to kill for survival, As the lion devours the prey, The pride feasts and the cubs join in, If the food goes scarce, The lion’s dead body dies into ground, Creating greens for herbivore consumers, It is the life cycle we live.
An animal’s habitat is sometimes strange, Can also fascinate the mind, Trees are statues of nature, Only their leaves dancing and twisting, These are all animal’s advantages, But there also comes disadvantages, Endless trees chopped down, An animal’s shelter destroyed, The home never replanted, We have to stop deforestation.

The pollution in the air, the hustle of the people
The annoying hooting of cars.

Raphael Blount The Excluded ElephantThe Sun, An oven heating up every minute was beating down on them. His elephant herd were at the waterhole, Nelly’s friends were having fun in the mud, They wouldn’t let him play, squelch, and cool down.
“There is not enough space for you to play.” His fun loving friends told him. Feeling sad, left out, excluded, feeling chased, feeling vulnerable more than ever now.
He was the weak prey, and they were the mighty predator. His herd were drinking water, but none of them would let him drink. He was pushing and shoving, for just one, small sip!
One drop left, the day was getting warmer and warmer, The water had run out!
And once again, his herd was on the move, Trying to find another waterhole, Bashing down trees, stomping on bushes, Finally they found some water, Nelly ran over trying to drink, But no, there were crocodiles, He was small, which could mean only one thing… Chomp! Chomp!
More food for them!
How much worse could this horrible day get?

Gift of Time Overall Grade 6 Winner SACEE Creative Writing Competition

Time is history in the making, Be it, a few treasured minutes, or hours of pain and struggle. Be it, days of love and laughter, or endless weeks that stretch forever. For every second spent, Priceless moments remembered, The gift of time can never be returned.
Years that turn into lifespans, memories trapped in song, Pictures that tell a story, that no words could ever truly capture.
A pose, a scene a single frame of expression, bound forever in time, a gift for you to cherish.
There is No forever, there is No eternity… There is only the miraculous birth of the sunrise, and the glorious embrace of the day, the enigmatic essence of nightfall, declaring the end of today.
It is in the tiny fragments of life, each droplet to be savoured, the gift of time is found.

I know I will long for the day I come back. The feeling is as if you have lost a loved one.
A piece of me has been ripped away like a carcass to a vicious predator.
I will miss the days we read scary stories after school.
Eating freshly popped popcorn on chilly days. The smell still lingers in my head.
I will miss playing football with my mates. Still playing even through the loud noise of the school bell rang.
I will miss playing football with my mates. Still playing even through the loud noise of the school bell rang.
I will miss getting ready for sports in the locker room.
Shouting at the top of our lungs, still continuing as the teacher corrected us.
I will miss the ice cold popsicles after school, cooling me off from a hard day of sport. Anxious for my new beginnings.
My emotions overwhelm me with happiness as well as sadness.
I look at my friends and try to enjoy the time that we have now but deep down I know the time we have is not forever.
Somedays I feel happy that I will have new friends, new teachers.
But sadness still floods my soul as if I was an ocean.
Goodbye home.
Goodbye friends …
Goodbye ice cream man after school.
Goodbye fresh popcorn and scary stories.
Goodbye to playing football still after the school bell rang.
Goodbye loved ones. My new chapter begins.

Walking along with the sun shining, the wind blowing, not a care in the world.
Today I am truly glad. It could be Friday, Or I could have no homework, Maybe it’s a holiday, But when I’m glad nothing can stop me on a sunny day, I could lie down in the grass, and if it’s raining I could sit inside with hot chocolate, but I would still feel glad.
I can even agree with my brother.
To feel glad is to be able to not worry, to appreciate what you have, Find the joy in the moment.
If you can learn to do that, you can truly find gladness.

When I pressed play I was hoping for a good song, but I got “work”
Nathan Teper The Ocean
The ocean is like the wind; it can be rough or calm.
No the ocean is the wind. It crawls onto land and then back out to sea. The ocean has a raging temper. The ocean sends up super salty spray The ocean so big and blue.
It is a relaxing place to go to play. ‘Crash’ the waves hit the rocks. The ocean seems like a small place yet it is everywhere

The golfing gods
As the sun begins to rise
As the crisp early morning fairways blather to my name
My hopes for the day lie in the golfing gods
The firm fast greens sloping away
The bunker more enticing than a half-way house
burger
Rock hard fairways
May all my drives find the fairways
May the air take them far away
May my irons find a place to land
That helps me to break par May my wedges float high and land softly May they have some zip and get next to the hole May my chips caress the slope May they always land in the hole May my putts locate the perfect break To always give me a chance
What a day it’s been for this perfect day of golf

My Favourite Day - SACEE Winning Poem
The dark morning goosebump-like mist
Butterflies whisper in your stomach
The silky clothes slid on like butter
An easy breakfast of light yellow eggs Pan sizzles while butter drips slowly down The maroon bags flashed with yellow, packed and ready
The cold leather seats freeze my body in isolation
The trees flash by as I peer out the window Frost on the windowsill is melted by the growing sun
The field a giant in the shadows of Johannesburg Children with dreams the size of mountains flow in the gates
Where in a few minutes they will battle it out In a game which has history forgetting its past The classic black and white ball skids around the green grass Impressive skills colour the dark atmosphere Agony strikes the heart as the ball flies into the goal
The striker is wild, his rehearsed celebrations cause irritation
As the sun starts to fade, the flocks of people walk into a warm afternoon
Forgetting the losses and cherishing the victories The day will close and the dreams will begin Floating into another dreamy world

It truly is beautiful… - SACEE Winning Poem
The sand caresses my bare feet, And I can feel the cold water splashing against me.
The cool breeze blowing my hair in all directions, The shrieks of children’s laughter in the distance. Staring long and hard at the vast, dark blue ocean,
Watching the white horses charge towards me. A wave of gratitude washes over me, as I ponder the gift of life. Just like the ocean, the tides of life turn,
And just like life, perilous secrets can lurk in the dark, deep, depths. This is our gift, to be nurtured, and respected for generations to come.
Life is an ocean voyage… We must keep our compass close to our hearts. We must weather the storms. We must not lose our way…
The evening sky, strands of blue, orange and violet,
As the sun bids humanity farewell, and falls below the horizon. I inhale deeply and smile broadly.
It truly is beautiful…
The Predator - SACEE Winning Poem
As the pale sky fades into a dim orange. Before being overrun by thorough darkness. I stand ready to face anything
As I am a ninja with unrivalled stealth A vibrant light shines down on me, disrupted by high-reaching trees. My body draws a formation of shadow Using the moonlight as its canvas. Eyes wide open scouring the rugged terrain of dead autumn leaves and fallen branches I stand with one sole objective.
To extirpate a certain valuable creature. I stalk a dismal and circular opening crouching behind shrubs and greenery Still, I am seeking out my next victim. That I will murder for my self-pleasure. Then at last I see a large formation, With a curved dagger on its head. The rustle of vegetation under me makes my prey slightly suspicious. But when I make the final move, It collapses onto the flat horizon. I am left not with guilt but with glee. As I will cut off its horn which is its pride. As I am the king and apex predator in this world of helpless creatures. Nothing will survive as my greed grows larger. Because I am a human hunter, Always waiting for the thrill of the hunt.
And the predator, feared by anything.
Luca LangensI’m glad
I’m glad that I don’t live when children had to work in mines
I’m glad that I didn’t live when adults didn’t have to work hours for dimes
I’m glad that I don’t have to steal food to eat Nor have to dip in rivers to bath
I’m glad that I wasn’t born in a place that hated me for the colour of my skin Or my religion or gender or belief
By people who are chickens in their own right
I’m glad that I wasn’t born as a sociopath who likes murdering kittens
Or that I wasn’t born as someone who didn’t have legs
Yet I’m not glad, I’m not glad that I do live when the Bees are dying I’m not glad that I’m living when the globe is warming
I’m not glad that I might have to work a dead end job just to survive
Or that I’ll have to pay college fees till I die
I’m not glad that I had to live through a global pandemic
Or a slew of forest fires
I’m not glad that I was born in a complete global economic crash
But through all of this
I’m still glad to be born a gen z
Across the Karoo, on the never ending plains
With nothing but the sun and sands
The cattle herders lead the way
Across the Karoo, on the never ending plains
The plants that hold on to the last drops of water
The insects that know only to survive
The sun that sets on the desert fields
The moon which arrives in its place
Walking on the ground that inhabits lifeless plants
The cattle herders make their way
The stars are painted on the night sky
The animals revive from their slumber
The air around them cool down a good bit
The darkness is creeping in
Across the Karoo, on the never ending plains
The cattle settle and the herders influenced by exhaustion

The night is now still, and everything is quiet
The herders now lay to rest

My favourite sport perfect Polo
The noble sport of horse polo a game with no comparison
It is a sport where horse and man join together to form a unit
The exhilaration of speeding across the field is unmatched
It is where you meet new people and share memories
It is a sport that brings people together through camaraderie
Marking and staying on your man are the most important things if you let your man get away it is a guaranteed goal
As you saddle the horse up the adrenaline starts to kick in
The team talk before the game begins and you and your teammates start discussing the tactics that have been practiced for weeks and the man you will mark throughout the game
As the ball is thrown in it signals 14 minutes of intense concentration When whistle blows to end the game, great joy or overwhelming sadness will be felt
Nothing beats the well deserved drinks and funny banter after the game

The Heart Melter
We are bonded together in emotional bliss, united in physical rapture.
That passion in your eyes, the purity of your soul.
Love is like a friendship caught on fire. A fierce and strong flame, one that lives forever, the
eternal flame it is, how beautiful a thought. True love, from the depths of your heart, is fire. You are the hope to my life, You are the shining star in the merry bright sky. And as these years burn before your eyes, kindness will not only bind us together, but will also serve as encouragement to make individuals, and even groups, stronger.
Follow the principle of giving and receiving, and once you have given much, you will hesitate to take, for brightening someone’s day is itself a gift, not only to them, but to you as well.
Kindness is like first love, it can change a life with a miracle and promise, for it wipes away sorrow and strife. And as you spread a little kindness, sprinkle it as you go, send it out into the world, and watch it smoothly flow, for love is kindness, and kindness is love.
Nicholas Morgan The gift
Twelve years ago I got a gift
A gift that I was not supposed to open until I was 18
Tomorrow is my special day.
My whole life I have been wondering Guessing at what was in that box Ever since I was six.
My Pop, or what you would call grandfather had died the day after giving it to me
And that makes me worry a bit Is it a curse of some kind? A curse that will bind me to ‘the gift’ somehow?
I can’t get my mind off this ‘present’ Curse or not I want to open it Because I can’t resist.
There were many times I tried to steal this box Ten years ago I snuck into my parents room But the small crate was locked with no key. And I wonder, how will I open it tomorrow? So many, so many questions! But no answers…
Khalane Moletsane The Things I Cherish
Failure, the alarm to your morning
The reality in your world of fantasy
The realisation when you feel too comfortable
The opportunity for growth and learning
Sadness, your pain and sorrow
The tears hid away and locked within you
The emotion caused by stress and suffering
The motivation to live
Motivation, the will of your power
The fuel to your determination
The meaning to your purpose
The strength in your disappointment
Perseverance, your will and your fight
The adrenaline coursing through your veins
Your final hesitation, your final thought leading to your final movement
Your last breath, your last resort
Success, the finish line to the end of the race
The breath of relief while the sun sets
The smiles of joy while you stand still on the battlefield
Success is the end of the journey, the paradise
You walk up to the first perfectly kept tee box, butterflies in your stomach. Calluses on your sweaty hands from past golf shots.
As you swing back, you feel the heavy driver twist and writhe in your hands like a dangerous creature.
You hit the dimpled golf ball into the murky, stagnant water on the left hand side of the green grassed fairway.
You curse under your breath, slowly trudging to the red ringed drop zone. Wondering why you even came to this beautiful estate.
But you get past it, a painful process in this challenging game called golf.
You walk up to the green, sighing as you prepare to hit your last and highly awaited shot on the short, trimmed green.
You hear the satisfying thud as the golf ball hits the unmoving flag.
You feel as if you are a pebble being skipped across water - free.
The shine of the 7 iron as you take a practice swing in the beige shade of the tall grassed rough.
An effort to find the beauty in the monotonous and fatiguing feeling which golf curses you with every time you play.
The enjoyable swish as the golf ball slowly descends into the gaping hole, which almost looks like a mouth awaiting much needed food.
The glass which holds the sweet honey-coloured drink, which rewards you after every nine holes.
As the glass hits the table with a clink, and a sigh which leaves your mouth.
Slurping up the drink and immediately exclaiming how delicious the liquid feels rushing down your throat.
Even jumping in the car all sweaty and tired, talking to your parents about how well you played against your dearest friends. These are all things which make the game of golf, so special.
A humble sport that is, golf.

He is a regular cat, Who pops instead of meows.
Noah McAllister Blood Red SkyA typical day, people relaxing and enjoying their flight.
A woman on board, no one knowing that she is a vampire.
She can’t control herself, she is dying for human blood.
She jumps out her seat and goes wild, drinking the blood from all the passenger one by one.
The remaining passengers set up a plan, to trap the killer in the dark depressing cockpit. All the passengers can now do is wait for the flight to end, worrying if the vampire will come out and kill them all.
An inquisitive child wants to see if the rumours are true.
He open the door to the cockpit.
He jumps down to see if it’s there, the vampire takes him and eats him alive.
The vampire is loose in the plane, everyone is running and screaming for their lives.
Everyone gets eaten alive.

It’s sweet smile makes kids happy around the world. So sweet that I could die.
The tasty treat taunts my tongue.
It an amazing treat for any day of the week. The hmmm hmmm of the machine.
I love candyfloss but I hate the colour pink.
Luke Dickinson Ember town
One windy afternoon
Three boys were playing on the street They played all evening and into the night
On the way back to their house, they saw something strange
Three old men making a huge fire
Very high it went Very close to the shack The Boys told them
“What’s wrong with you, make a smaller fire”
The old men chanted “WE KNOW BETTER”
And threw a stick with fire at them
The stick missed them and landed on a shack
The wind blew the fire, onto the next shack
The shacks started burning one by one
The boys knew they needed to act, fast and effective.
It was late at night
Most were asleep
The boys evacuated shack by shack
The next morning the township was Embers

The boys were heroes
From far and from near They got the Golden Human Award Given once every twenty years.

Jeremy Bottomley Maple SyrupThis place is frozen.
It is so frosty that the yolk freezes inside the egg. If you want water, you melt ice.
If you don’t have warm clothes you will cease to live. Landscape as bright and beautiful as it gets. Danger in the beauty, safety is not certain. You may get the “eh bud” once in a while. The wild Canadian is vicious and will help you no matter what. Their life sauce is sweet and sickeningly rich.
The simple snowmobile is your transport if you dare. Here we have artificial turf to play our games. There they have perfect ice to play their games. Here to survive we wear socks and shoes. There they wear socks upon socks upon socks inside boots. If you want the ultimate experience in the wild, Canada is your place! Canada, my favourite place in the world.
James Brooks Flight
As the sun rises, and the roosters screech, a bird ready for flight. With a swift beat of its wings the icy air lifts it up effortlessly, high in the air. As the bird escapes the world below, above the lake,
above the trees, and above the waking town. In the air, vast and open, the icy air pierces the bird’s ruffled feathers and dries the bird’s eyes, blurring its vision.
In the open it ducks and dives, speeding left and
right.
The sky an open canvas for the most detailed tricks.
An escape from daily life –This is flight.

My favourite - Rugby
Rugby
Wet balls slip through your hands Muddy balls slapping my hands when I catch it. The sound of the haka echoing around the stadium.
The ear piercing sound of the ref’s whistle.
Rugby
The rage of an angry crowd shouting at the ref. The grunt of the packs smashing together in scrums.
The roar of the crowd as you dive over for a try. The cheer of your teammates as you score the winning drop goal in the last second. The feel of the World Cup in your hands. Now you know you have lived your dream.
Miles Cox POP!
My hands are out of control, my mouth is going POP!
Anxiety is swallowing me whole, and my mind is a hole I’m trapped in.
You’re just doing that. You’re copying, mimicking, mocking. Nothing is wrong with you. No no no. Nothing. Pop.
I can’t tell anyone but two I’m alone and scared and shaking. Anxiety is making it worse. My hands are flying and I’m crying.
NagarPOP, wax, arms and wrists, clap, shake. Pain. Words like anxiety, chronic, syndrome, POP out at me.
And until my parents believe me, I’m falling, Falling into anxiety’s cold grasp.

Thomas Arnott Predator of the waves
As the waves crash.
A shadow passes by. The little fish swim away
There a huge splash and all the fish jump up.
A huge, silver shape jumps
And it’s gone in a second
You see a small, silver shape darting around Splash! A bird dives in the water
Up it flies with a sparkling thing in its claws
The grey shape of the dolphin splashes around The dark shape of the seal
The fin of the marlin can be seen cutting though the water
Water is spraying everywhere The small fish is gone in 5 minutes. There is no trace of the fish left.
Hlumile Ntontela Sports - My favourite
That rush, that adrenaline, that FEELING; The excitement that you get from winning; The moment when people are proud of you; Or excited when you reach the pitch; From energy being given into you and taken out by your coaches;
You are a part of the monopoly of victory now; As a piece in the puzzle for your team; You are special, you are a prodigy; Someone out there adores or dislikes you; People want to buy or own you; You are important!
In sports you are traded or bought by clubs; Your statistics are tracked and everyone wants to know everything about you;
The fans chant you on; you can not let them down; Be known as a legend or as an enemy of the world; Your life is changed when you play sport; Your country has called you up and wants you as their asset;
Millions across the world await to meet you; Journalists are writing about you; You are a star in your sport now; You are a sportsman; Your paycheck, reputation and family will never be the same;
But as special as you are though ... you are human.
Jakob Kullmann The futureI’m glad.
For the future soil we will stand on.
And all the flying cars we will have.
I’m glad.
For the economics that will change.
And the peace that we will have.
I’m glad.
For the traffic less roads.
And the cleaning robots. I’m glad.
For the cool houses we can have.
And all the cool gadgets we will get I’m glad.
For the future in front of us.
And all the journeys we will take.

The land is constantly in fear
For the carelessness people have for it tears
We have taken more years away For me and my offspring We all are scared
For when the end comes
To this beautiful planet
We need to save this planet to save our children
Or they will suffer from the weakness we have given the Earth
Oliver Proudfoot Our environment is crying
Our environment is made up of land that feeds us. Our environment is made up Of fresh air that we breathe. Our environment is made up of water Which is the source of life.
We take our environment for granted, thinking it will always be okay
The world has become a giant dump site Don’t ignore the signs
There are warnings all around us But still, we ignore them. Our environment is crying for us to take notice.
Notice that the world Will no longer exist.
Our environment is the most important. We need to stand up and take action!
Shaiyen Desai Setting Story
One day my family and I were watching Tv on a beautiful and scorching Sunday morning. My brother said, “Let’s go and play soccer outside.”
Later, my dad becomes hungry and finished a smelly packet of salt and vinegar chips. He still wanted more and asked me to go down to our dark and spooky basement. It took me about 5 minutes to find the chips. As I walked up the unstable, creaky stairs, the door slammed shut and an evil and terrifying ghost woman suddenly appeared.
She was a sly ghost who tried to trap me in our horrific basement. The ghost gave me two options: either I did her chores or if I didn’t, she would cast a spell on me and possess my body.
At the same time my dad wondered why I took so long. He tried to open the basement door but it wouldn’t open.
The evil ghost screamed “What will it be?”
So, I muttered in a weak voice “I’ll do your chores.“ I came out with the chips. My fat, lazy and angry dad snatched the chips with his dirty, greasy fingers and shouted, “What took you so long!”
After cleaning up the basement, I finally got free and after a while, I looked at my mom and she had the devil’s eye staring at me, and I refused to ever go back in the basement ever again.
Muzammil Peer Showjumping with joy - SACEE Winning Poem

From carrying the saddle to getting the bit in From walking the horse to mounting its back
From going from a walk to a canter
From putting the jump up to the traditional “HUP!” as you go over it
It’s all so stressful and overwhelming Everything about this magnificent and noble sport must be perfect
Thus, making it my happy place
To me showjumping is a necessity As well as an essential aspect of my lifestyle
What an exquisite and fanciable sport it is Horse riding is the neutrons to my brain
The mitochondria to my cell
And the butter to my bread
If only, if only I could do it everyday
It’s delightful to be in the presence of the horses
They can be so aggressive but so down to earth too They are the best listeners, as they do not speak They are the best companions as they shall always side with you
And they are the best helpers as they shall always carry you
These creatures are what make the sport so elite I will always be in love with them
And life without these creatures and a life without this sport Is a life I shan’t live

Okokuqala intandokazi yami, iFlash. U-Ezra Mila ungumlingisi omuhle kodwa uzokwenza iFlash ibonakale njenge-noob, unamandla kakhulu kumahlaya futhi akayona nje “indoda elwa nobugebengu bendawo”. We were very excited to introduce basketball as a new sport at Pridwin in 2021. It was encouraging to see the number of boys who were interested in trying out this new sport. Many quickly adjusted to the new skills and became competent. We were fortunate enough to play three fixtures where our boys competed with great success.

CRICKET SCHOOL SEASON
Owing to Covid-19 our cricket season was very short with our teams managing to get in two fixtures. Although it came and went quickly, our boys showed that they were ready for a full season with some outstanding individual and team performances.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS CRICKET FESTIVAL

The 1st Team had the privilege of going on tour to Pretoria for the annual

Independent Schools Cricket Festival hosted by WHPS. Over the course of the weekend the team played three fixtures in three different formats, a 50 overs-match versus Clifton Nottingham Road, a timed cricket match versus Musikili from Zambia and a T20 match versus St Charles, coming away with one win, one draw and a loss. All our games were closely contested with our boys showing grit, determination and sportsmanship on and off the field. A massive thank you to the parents for traveling to the festival and for their amazing support of the team. Thank you to the coaching team, Mr T Edwards, Mr C Du Toit and Mr M Mailula for their time, commitment and support.

Hockey U13A
This year's hockey season was quick and busy. After missing an entire season in 2020, the boys were eager to get back on the turf and utilise their new skills learned during the year. The U13As had a very successful season, in which they won two, drew one and lost one game. The highlight

of the season was the exciting game against St John’s Preparatory, where the boys played an incredible game of hockey showcasing their amazing grit and teamwork.
Congratulations to Shaiyen Desai and Hlumile Ntontela for making the Southern Gauteng U13 team and receiving full colours for hockey, and
to Luzuko Zithulele for making the District 9 hockey team, earning him half colours.
Well done on a great season, boys! A special thank you to all the coaching staff and parents for their support.

Very few schools decided to play rugby in 2021 because of the contact nature of the sport. We spent time working on the noncontact aspects of rugby. We were fortunate to be able to take part at the St Stithians U12 and U13 7s Rugby Festival. Ten forwards and 10 backline players were selected in

these two age groups to represent Pridwin at the festival in early November. Congratulations to all the teams for their performances at the St Stithians Festival. A special mention must go to the U12 forwards team for completing the festival undefeated. Pridwin also participated in a Triangular Rugby
Fellowship Day against St John’s and St David’s. All rugby-playing boys were split into two teams in each age group. Our boys played with great determination and must be congratulated on the manner in which they displayed the Pridwin values on and off the field.

The soccer season suffered a number of disruptions and we only managed to play one full fixture vs WHPS. Our boys displayed a lot of courage and held their own throughout the age groups. It was unfortunate that our second fixture against St David’s was disrupted by rain and lightning. We only managed a few minutes of the first round of games that morning. The rest of the season was cancelled due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases among the schools. The boys spent the rest of the season focusing on skills-based work and playing matches internally.

Covid-19 restrictions ensured that we were unable to hold any swimming galas in 2021. We managed to hold a Midmar Mile Fun Swim which the
boys thoroughly enjoyed. The boys continued with their training and remained motivated with the hope of being able to swim competitively

at an interschool gala. Unfortunately, our Inter-house Championship Gala at the end of the year was called off owing to lightning.

Tennis in 2021 suffered significantly because of the enforced Covid-19 breaks. We only managed to play one match against St Stithians. The highlight of the season was the Sun City Tennis Tour where our top six played a number of games against other schools. The boys performed bravely over the course of three days. The highlight of the competition was the Valley of the Waves with Mr Bowles.

Reconnecting with Pridwin’s Oldest Old Boy

We have continued to engage in meaningful and strong relationship building within the OPA and are grateful to Edmund Batley for reconnecting us with Dr Donald Clark, Pridwin’s oldest Old Boy (91 years). Patrick Lees and Dr Clark had a “virtual meeting” and it was wonderful to listen to Dr Clark sharing his special memories of his time at Pridwin. He was especially proud to tell us that, “Pridwin and its principles gave me an excellent start in life – for which I am grateful.”
Mark Simelane
Our Pridwin community was deeply saddened by the passing of one of our Pridwin Old Boys, Mark Simelane. Mark was the first black pupil to attend Pridwin in 1983 and has been a proud ambassador of our school. Mark changed the course of history at the school and is one of the shining beacons which drives us forward in our efforts towards transformation. He was an example to all that a school is only as good as you make it yourself and he always made the most of every opportunity. He was a member of the unbeaten Pridwin Cross Country team in 1989, the unbeaten 1st XI cricket team in 1990 and also won the coveted Pridwin Open All-Round Sportsman Award. He then went on to matriculate from Michaelhouse in 1995.

We thank you for your enthusiasm in everything you did and for your memorable service to Pridwin. You were always such a proud “Pridwinian”.

class of 2016
We were delighted to welcome back our Grade 7 class of 2016 who were about to finish their matric year at their respective high schools. We were all reminded about the incredibly strong connection our Old Boys and their families have to Pridwin and we loved hosting them back at school!

The Grade 7 Leavers raised funds and donated tables and seating to the Community Garden. This will enable an entire class to visit the garden and be able to work outside. The Grade 7s and their parents were invited to a tea in order to celebrate the event.

The television show Survivor served as the theme for the Leavers’ Function. The Grade 6 group of parents outdid themselves in transforming the Auditorium into an island paradise. No detail was spared in giving the Grade 7s and their parents a fitting send off to celebrate their time at Pridwin. Tribute was made to each boy in verse.
We are gathered at the Tribal Council to meet To celebrate our Grade 7s, each one’s feat. Observe how the boys started on their journey And became remarkable young men for you to see!
