The Mackerel Fayre Sunday 25th May From around 1pm Fr. Robert Fayers will conduct the ancient Brighton ceremony of the Blessing of Nets on the seashore, near the Fishermen’s Museum, as part of the Mackerel Fayre. The tradition of blessing the nets at the Mackerel Fayre has ancient roots. In Tudor and Stuart times the fishing industry was crucial to Brighton & this was the most important fishing town in Sussex. Four out of five men were fishermen. Brighton’s fleet fished as far away as Yarmouth and Scarborough. The importance of The Mackerel is commemorated at the fisherman’s church, St Paul’s in West Street, where the beautiful new glass doors are etched with a catch.
