SQA Assessment timetable and information April - June 2021

Dear student/parent/carer SQA Assessment Update Following the cancellation of exams in 2021, SQA put in place an Alternative Certification Model (ACM) and we now provide further detail around how assessments will actually operate, as well as a final assessment timetable. At the end of this email we have provided an updated version of the Frequently Asked Questions we distributed before the Easter break.

In recent weeks, all East Lothian secondary schools have collaborated with East Lothian Council to plan key aspects of a shared approach to SQA assessment. This will ensure consistency and high standards of assessment across all East Lothian schools, and ensure equity for all students. Our approach is mirrored in each of the five other East Lothian secondary schools.

This is a lengthy email, but it is essential reading for all S4-6 students and their families. We hope that it provides clarity and reassurance at an anxious time, but do please get in touch with us if you have any questions that are not addressed here.

Final ACM Timetable Assessments in practical subjects have been underway for a number of weeks now, but nonpractical subjects start their assessments next week, and the final assessment timetable is attached. This timetable simply identifies which week individual subject assessments will take place – the precise dates individual classes will sit assessments has been separately shared with students, and is clearly displayed in each subject area.

We have also attached a personal timetable that students may complete, and a printable copy of the final timetable. Paper copies of these will be distributed to students this week.

Meetings with students All students must attend one 20 minute SQA Preparation Meeting in school this week. The schedule for S4, S5 and S6 students is as follows:

Provisional grades and final results Teachers will determine ‘provisional grades’ based on student performance in these April and May assessments, previous assessment evidence and any practical coursework components in applicable subjects. You can read more about provisional grades in our Frequently Asked Questions at the end of this email.

Because provisional grades will be moderated and quality assured, those grades remain provisional until all quality assurance checks have been carried out. We will inform students of their provisional grades for all subjects in the final week of term (week beginning 21 June). We will submit our grades to SQA by 25 June, and students will receive final results on Tuesday 10 August.

The quantity of assessment Although we are giving students a structured calendar of assessments, this is not an SQA exam diet. Rather, this is a calendar of assessments of differing length and weighting, spread across a number of weeks. Students will have quite a number of assessments across their subjects and may well have two assessments on the same day. Students should not be daunted by this – these assessments are generally smaller in length and coverage, and with proper preparation students will be able to perform well in two assessments on the same day.

The number of assessments students will undertake will vary across subjects. Most of the assessments students will be sitting are fairly short and will normally take place in a classroom, as part of normal learning and teaching, although some lengthier assessments may require students to complete them beyond a subject’s normal periods.

The assessments have been planned to avoid overburdening students and most students will have some days when they do not have any assessments.

Will assessment results be returned to students?

Throughout the assessment period teachers will be able to share some feedback with students as assessments are marked. SQA guidance is clear that schools should communicate student progress as assessments proceed. To ensure students are kept informed, we plan to let students know the percentages/grades they have achieved in individual assessments, but all grades will be subject to change after moderation and internal/external quality assurance procedures are carried out.

Each assessment will carry a weighting factor. In other words, achieving an A in one assessment may not equate to an overall A grade, when all assessments are taken into account. We will share details of the weighting of individual subject assessments in a further update prior to next week.

We would ask students and families for their patience as we work our way through the assessment calendar. Teachers will have a marking load that far surpasses a regular year. Please allow time for these assessments to be marked, avoiding placing undue pressure on staff to provide assessment marks.

Lessons during the assessment period Students should attend all timetabled lessons as normal throughout the assessment period. There is no study leave in East Lothian schools and in lessons students will be able to consolidate learning and receive feedback on progress from teachers to help them prepare for forthcoming assessments.

Assessment conditions for students Assessments will be taking place in many classrooms throughout the school, and our covid safety measures mean doors and windows will be open, other than when period changeover happens. As a result, we will be unable to ensure ‘silent’ conditions for assessments, although we will, of course, do everything we can to minimise noise.

Because these are formal assessments, we have to put certain controls in place. These assessements are not exams, but students must conduct themselves in the same way they would for an exam.

Students must: 

turn their phone off, and place it in their school bag, which will be stored at the front of the classroom.  store any revision notes in their school bag.  only take to their desk the materials required for the assessment – stationery and a bottle of water.

Students must not:

    

communicate in any way with, seek assistance from, or give assistance to, another student during an assessment. intentionally cause a disturbance in the assessment room. remove a question paper of any kind from an assessment room. use rude, abusive, offensive or discriminatory language (including racist, sexist or homophobic content) in scripts or coursework. make any attempt to give themselves an unfair advantage. Any cheating will have serious consequences and may affect the grade a student receives.

What are pupils’ responsibilities around the security of assessments?

The assessments students will sit are ‘secure’, which means that we must do all we can to ensure that their content is not shared. In particular students must not:  

reveal the content of any assessments which they have completed to other students. discuss or disclose any aspect of their assessments on social media, including the themes, topics and content or images of the assessment materials.

Additional Assessment Arrangements Teachers and our Support for Learning team will ensure that all additional assessment arrangements are in place for eligible students. This may mean students sitting assessments at a different time from other members of the class – all such alterations in a student’s assessment timetable will be clearly communicated to students.

Exceptional Circumstances and appeals We are very aware that students have faced disruption to their learning this session, and for some months previous to that, too. SQA have taken account of this in their planning of the ACM and have built in flexibility in the timing and nature of these assessments. There is therefore no SQA Exceptional Circumstance Service this year. Exceptional Circumstance is a pre-certification exam-based service: because there are no exams, exceptional circumstances are not required.

By the beginning of May, we will have full details of the appeals process SQA will be putting in place and we will, of course, let everyone know about it at that point.

If students have any concerns, what should they do?

It is really important students speak to their subject teachers if they have concerns about a specific assessment. Any student who feels their wellbeing is being negatively affected by the assessments more broadly should make contact with their guidance teacher immediately. We are keen to help remove any barriers students may have to successful completion of their assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions around the Alternative Certification Model What is a provisional grade?

These are the grades we will submit to SQA on 25 June, based on all of the ‘demonstrated attainment’ evidence we have for each student. These grades will only become final grades once the SQA has confirmed them, but we already know that the mistakes of last summer, when grades were adjusted in an unacceptable way by SQA, will not happen at all this year.

How will we gather evidence to help form provisional grades?

SQA has provided guidance, that all PL teachers are following, on how to gather evidence of ‘demonstrated attainment’. Put simply, this means pieces of evidence which can inform teacher judgements of provisional grades. As a school, we have followed both general and subject-specific guidance. Follow these links if you wish to read more.

SQA have said “The amount of key evidence required to determine provisional results in National 5 to Advanced Higher courses varies between subjects. It is not the quantity of evidence but the quality of evidence, in relation to its ‘predictive value’, that will support schools in determining provisional grades this session”.

How was the timing of PL’s assessments decided?

Careful consideration has been given to the timing of assessments, informed by how ready students are to sit assessments, and the additional supports that some students will need.

We have also made every effort to spread our assessments over the time we have available.

What if a student misses an assessment due to illness or self-isolation?

All such students will have an opportunity to sit any assessments they have missed as soon as they return to school. Eventually, we will reach a point where no further assessments can take place, but we have deliberately finished assessments at the start of June to allow ‘mop up’ of incomplete assessments.

If a student knows in advance of an assessment that they will be absent, they must inform their class teacher as soon as possible, so an alternative date can be agreed for them to sit that assessment.

Are these assessments just really SQA exams taking place in school?

No. They cover the same content, but they are far more spaced out. So, instead of a student sitting an exam in one day, students will be assessed over 3-4 weeks. This will give students far more time to focus their revision, and to show what they are capable of.

Will all course content be assessed?

The SQA has advised that schools should gather assessment evidence as late as possible in the course more course coverage will have taken place. SQA have stated “evidence does not need to cover the entire course specification, but the more course content that is covered, the better the predictive value is likely to be.” That is why the assessments are taking place as late as possible in the school year.

How will we make sure provisional grades are fair?

All of our teachers have participated in national and local ‘Understanding Standards’ events, so we know that all teachers are marking to a standard that is the same as SQA exam marking.

A sample of each teacher’s marked assessments will be ‘moderated’ by teams within each subject area, and across East Lothian. This means, therefore, that a careful process will confirm that each teacher’s marking is meeting the ‘national standard’. In each school a very careful analysis of each subject’s provisional grades will take place, to ensure that they are in line with expected results. Put together, we are certain that each student will be treated fairly.

How will we avoid any implicit bias (unconscious bias or stereotypes) in establishing provisional grades?

Our teachers are professional and objective, but in every line of work implicit bias is possible.

The moderation processes referred to above will help to prevent this, and specific work will take place next term with all teachers in Scotland to ensure that no implicit bias takes place.

What type of evidence can be used in forming predicted grades?

Some students and families are under the impression that the May assessments are all or nothing. This is not correct. Although May assessments are really important, and will carry a lot of weight in forming provisional grades, many other forms of evidence will contribute to provisional grades. ● SQA 2021 Assessment Papers (recently shared securely with us), Commercial practice papers and coursework assessments will have a high predictive value. Ie they carry a lot of weight in deciding provisional grades. ● Class tests from before or after lockdown, which sample key aspects of the course and which have been completed under assessment conditions, can be used as supplementary evidence. ● Classwork and work completed without assessment conditions, or during remote learning, is unlikely to form a strong evidence base on its own, but may supplement other evidence.

How will actual grades be decided?

Grade boundaries are the marks required to achieve a particular grade within a course and SQA’s notional grade boundaries are: Band 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

There is still much national uncertainty around the extent to which individual subjects in schools will be able to adjust these grade boundaries in the same way as SQA do each year, to take account of harder-than-expected or easier assessments. We look forward to clearer clarification from SQA on this. Whatever is decided, PL students will not be disadvantaged in any way compared to students from other schools.

We expect these FAQs to expand over the coming weeks, and should that occur an updated version will be shared.

If this is required, then students will be advised directly by their class teacher in advance. Class teachers can confirm specific dates and times if students are unsure.

Students entitled to additional Assessment Arrangements (AA) may do their assessments at a different time to those listed above in order to accommodate the extra time and other support required. Students should contact their class teaher and Mrs Lusk for details of any changes.

National 3, National 4 and NPA courses will continue to be assessed internally during class time alongside the assessments above.

Students doing a N4 or NPA course will be told their assessment arrangements by their class teacher.

If a student knows that they will be off for a planned appointment during a planned assessment, they should let their teacher know in advance wherever possible. An alternative day and time for this assessment will then be arranged with their class teacher.
