Egg Drop Challenge S3 Physics

The challenge was to drop an egg from a height but to prevent it from cracking. Our pupils had to design a protective casing using only straws, string and paper.

I was very impressed with some of the designs, which involved sturdy pyramid structures and parachutes with built in crumple zones.

The winning team was Archie, Jack, Arran and Ewan. It was a close competition, and a great effort by all. There was lots of laughter and enjoying physics outdoors. Well done!

John Muir ExPLorers

We were so disappointed to have to postpone next week student walks, due to building inspections taking place at the moment, but the walking keeps going all the same.

Well done to former PL student Rebecca Muir, who walked 9 miles of the

18 points for Seton!

Well done, too, to Susan Wotton, who has walked 25 miles of the route! 50 points for Grange!

Staff Bake Off

The competition was fierce on Monday lunchtime when the latest addition of Staff Bake Off took place. Mini Victoria Sponge cakes in less than an hour was a tough task but many rose to the challenge and did a fantastic job. The winner was declared to be Mrs Dempsey (PE). Well Done to all who took part. Look out for the next challenge coming soon!

Library News

The PL Library Podcast

We’re launching a podcast! The Pupil Librarians and I will be chatting about all things books and library projects, inviting pupils, staff, parents and, hopefully, a few guest authors on for a blether! But first, we need a name and a logo:

Competition: open to all students.

Design a logo and create a name for the podcast!

There are heaps of podcast logo design software available online (a quick google search will deliver plenty) – Canva is particularly good, but you’re welcome to use pens and paper.

Email your design to Mr France dfrance@prestonlodge.elcschool.org.uk by Friday 9th June

Designs will be voted on by the Pupil Librarians, with the winner announced on Friday 16th June. Good luck!

Book of the Week

Eve by Victor LaValle

A young girl, Eve, raised in a virtual reality embarks on a deadly crosscountry quest to save her father … and our dying planet.

“WHAT WORLD HAVE WE LEFT OUR CHILDREN?”

When the ice caps melted, most of humanity was lost to the hidden disease that was released. Now, a mysterious girl named Eve has awoken in secret and must deal with a world that’s nothing like the virtual reality she was raised in.

In order to save her father and accompanied only by Wexler, her robotic caretaker and protector sheathed in her favorite teddy bear, Eve must embark on a deadly quest across the country. Along the way, she will have to contend not only with the threats of a very real world that await her, but the lies we tell our children in the name of protecting them.

Novelist Victor LaValle (The Ballad of Black Tom, Victor LaValle’s Destroyer) and illustrator Jo Mi-Gyeong (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) deliver a powerful dystopian adventure about the world we leave behind… and the price that must be paid to restore life to a dying planet.

Financial Support Available to Families

Clothing Grants

Some families are eligible for a Clothing Grant. If this may apply to you, please visit the Free School Meals and Clothing Grants area of the East Lothian Council website for further information. If you would like some help completing these forms, support is available on the East Lothian Council website, or email admin@prestonlodge.elcschool.org.uk. We will be happy to help you.

Community Fund

A combination of corporate funding secured by the Preston Lodge Learning Foundation, and money from our Pupil Equity Fund means that we are able to offer immediate support to all families who need it, breaking down financial barriers to learning. This year we have also been delighted to receive generous support for school uniform costs for specific students from the Preston Seton Gosford Area Partnership.

This Community Fund is available to all families, and we very much encourage families to apply for a confidential, quick grant if they need support. Grants are expected to be in the region of £10 to £50, but all applications are considered on an individual basis. Applications can be made by students, families, staff, and members of the wider community.

An application form is available on school’s website here and please email admin@prestonlodge.elcschool.org.uk or call 01875 811170if you have any questions.
