EDF Energy Apprentice Information Day

Saturday 21 November and Saturday 5 December Torness power station will be holding two information days about its very successful Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship scheme on Saturday 21 November and Saturday 5 December to let prospective recruits know more about it. There will be two sessions on each day, one at 9:30 and another at 11:00. You must book a place in advance.

From studying at HMS Sultan in Portsmouth for the first two years to what qualifications are needed and how to apply, the information day will prove invaluable to anyone considering a career in engineering maintenance.

We are all very proud of what we do here at the power station, both locally in offering jobs and nationally by producing a large percentage of the nation's low carbon electricity demands. This day will give us a chance to share this enthusiasm with those wishing to apply to join our apprenticeship scheme in 2015.

In the current climate, an apprenticeship offers a real alternative to going to university. Our scheme is very highly regarded and the sky is really the limit for our apprentices. Several members of EDF Energy’s executive team started with the company in this way, so the message is this course could be the start of a truly amazing engineering career.

While anyone who meets the criteria can apply, we are very keen to encourage females to consider a career in engineering at EDF Energy. The information day will have a number of staff on hand to share their experiences of working in the nuclear industry. We will deliver a presentation and there will also be an opportunity to ask questions about the programme. There will be no site tour.

The information day will take place at Torness power station in the visitor centre and will last roughly 1.5 hours.

The scheme itself starts with a comprehensive induction and a week-long outward bound course, where you’ll get to meet and spend time with your fellow apprentices. From there, you’ll move down to HMS Sultan.

edfenergy.com/apprentices Years 1&2: During your time at HMS Sultan, we’ll introduce you to the basics of engineering and start you on the path towards valuable NVQ and BTEC qualifications. You’ll also have the chance to get involved in all kinds of other activities, which will help you develop those all important communication and personal skills.

Towards the end of Year 1 you will be streamed into a specific discipline – Mechanical, Electrical or Control and Instrumentation.

As well as giving you a great introduction to basic engineering, these first two years are a perfect transition to living an independent life. So that in year three you’re ready to move on to one of our coal, gas or nuclear plants around the UK and join the maintenance teams based there.

Years 3&4: Joining the maintenance teams based at one of our coal, gas or nuclear plants around the UK, you’ll put the skills you’ve learned into practice. You’ll gain valuable practical experience as you train on the job alongside skilled professionals.

But at the same time (depending on your academic achievements and business need) you may get the opportunity to continue your academic and vocational studies – towards an HNC, for example. Once you’ve successfully completed the programme, you’ll be awarded a nationally recognised qualification – the Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Certificate in Engineering. Perhaps even more importantly, you’ll have developed the skills and experience you need to build a great career with EDF Energy in one of the fastest moving and most exciting industries around.

For the first two years, you’ll be based at HMS Sultan, a Royal Navy Training Centre near Portsmouth. We’ll take care of your accommodation, your food and even your travel to training each day. And because you’ll be living with all our other apprentices, it won’t be long before you are settled and making full use of the excellent sports and leisure facilities available at HMS Collingwood Naval Base where you will live.

You’ll also be transported to and from your base location every four to six weeks for an extended weekend of leave.

It’s exciting but it can also be a little daunting: leaving full time education and finding your place in the world. But learning to stand on your own two feet is a big part of what being an EDF Energy Engineering Maintenance Apprentice is all about.

The apprenticeship programme lays the foundations of engineering using maths and science principles gained at GCSE stage. So to be considered, you’ll need five GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above, including Maths, Double Science and English Language.

On the basis of your application, we may invite you along for a series of occupational tests, then possibly an interview and some more assessments.

Do well here and the next step will involve a medical test and security vetting, while we check your qualifications and references.

If all’s well, we’ll then confirm your place on the scheme and you can start preparing for an exciting four years ahead.
