ACTIVITY GUIDE

September - December 2013 Holiday Closures: Sep 2 ‡ 1ov 11 2 2 ‡ Dec 2 2 31

A Message From Julie Dahlen, Director of Library and Recreation Services Any color, as long as it’s pink! From my banana-seat Sting-Ray in the 3rd grade, to my current beach cruiser, my favorite bicycles have always been pink. After serving on Paso Robles’ ¿rst-ever Bicycle Stakeholders’ Committee for the past several months, I have realized that perhaps bike hue is not the most important consideration when it comes to cycling! The Stakeholders group includes Steve and Carol Fleury (committee chair and secretary), other local bicycle a¿cionados and a few staff in the public sector – all of whom realize the value of keeping active while reducing automobile traf¿c on our busy roads.

the Moos family on the move!

Karen Moos enjoys cycling, hiking and using her artistically creative abilities around her home. Randall M Moos is a member of the Paso Robles REC F Foundation and a local businessman who supports s multicultural youth-related activities activit such as Boy Scouts. Justin Justi Moos is a 7th-grader at Flamson Middle Mid School who loves basketball and cycling. cyc Riley Ri Moos, Paso Robles High School sophomore, so enjoys the outdoors and recently r achieved a black belt in Shorin-Ryu. S

Recently, Paso Robles was awarded a bronze status as a bicycle-friendly community, thanks in large measure to the efforts of these good folks. Big deal? Absolutely. Not only does such recognition encourage our own citizens to jump on a bicycle and stay physically ¿t, a listing as a BicycleFriendly Community is a great tourist draw with obvious bene¿ts to our local economy. So, come on . . . let’s go ride a bike. I’ll be the one with the pink helmet.

Enjoy!

On the move, mov indeed! Activity Guide, September - December 2013

September Artist of the Month: Friday Plein Air Painter Group

area, settling in Paso Robles. Surber tries to capture the grandeur and majesty of the west in his images, especially the natural beauty of the Central Coast.

In early 2010, several local artists expressed an interest in painting together on a regular basis at outdoor venues. That was the beginning of the “Friday Plein Air Painter Group.” Their September display will include watercolor, oil, acrylic, and pastel artwork inspired by the beauty of the North County.

November Library Display Case: Altered Books Group The Book Arts Group, a group of highly creative individuals who express themselves through the medium of book form, will display original, altered, and handmade books in the library’s main display case.

September Library Display Case: Matt Pomerico's Wood Carvings - Matthew Pomerico describes himself as more of a craftsman than an artist, but viewing his ¿ne woodcarvings will make one think he is de¿nitely both. His wooden toys, Christmas ornaments and cowboy scenes make excellent gifts. Having carved for many years Matthew’s distinct carving style is highly imaginative and creative.

December Artist of the Month: Richard Hansen Richard Hansen, a well-known local nature photographer, has exhibited his photos at many events and functions, such as the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History. Hansen is a retired food and drug microbiologist who started to get serious about photography in 1976 when he bought his ¿rst Single Lens ReÀex camera, a Canon FTBn. He has been on the Central Coast since 1980, where he met Joe Dickerson and George Lepp and has been assisting and co-leading photography classes with them for over 20 years.

October Artist of the Month: Carol Black-Brown Carol Black-Brown has been involved in artistic endeavors all of her life. Introduced to pastel six years ago by artist/teacher Joyce Krull, she was taken by the soft to vibrant colors of the medium. October’s display was inspired by a recent trip to the Tuscan region of Italy. “I love to catch those Àeeting moments in time that depict the diversity and universality of living our lives: a little girl and her mother shopping in Lucca, street artists in Florence, a ¿sherman on his boat, a young woman asleep on the train. I look for something unique in painting well-known sights: tourists caught in a rainstorm in the Piazza di San Giovanni in Florence. And in Lucca, the buildings on Piazza Del’An¿teatro reÀected in a mirror on a wall.”

Holiday Wreath Thursday, December 12, 6 - 9 p.m. Library Conference Room

Based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize book, the incomparable South Paci¿c is set in a tropical island paradise. South Paci¿c tells the sweeping romantic saga of two parallel love stories that are threatened by the realities of war and prejudice. Considered by many as one of the ¿nest musicals ever written, the score includes such musical theatre gems as Some Enchanted Evening, I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair, This Nearly Was Mine and There is Nothin' Like a Dame. Admission is FREE! Bring low-back chairs or blankets for an evening of entertainment under the stars. Wine and beverages will be sold. These free performances are sponsored by the REC Foundation, the City of Paso Robles, and J. Lohr Winery. Please consider a donation to help support this www.prcity.com/recreation

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holidays to attend the Library’s annual holiday event. Make a beautiful holiday wreath using recycled books that will be a handmade keepsake for years to come. Crafters will be provided with basic supplies, but will need to provide a hot glue gun and glue and may want to bring special items such as small photos, stickers, or special ornaments to enhance their creations. Sign ups for this event begin November 12 at the Paso Robles Library Circulation Desk. Space is limited. Family groups are welcome, however due to the nature of the tools and materials used, children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

From November 12 through December 31, the Library invites patrons to "can" their ¿nes, forgiving $1.00 in ¿nes for every canned or other nonperishable food item they donate (maximum $16 per Library card account). "This program provides an opportunity for families and individuals to help out those in need in our community while paying off overdue ¿nes owed to the Library," explained Library Manager Karen Christiansen. "This year we will be accepting soup-can or larger cans of soup, chili, fruit and vegetables; 6 oz. or larger cans of meat, chicken or seafood; 1 lb. or larger packages of rice or pasta; and boxed family-sized foods such as macaroni and cheese."

LIBRARY ADULT BOOK GROUP

Expand Your Horizons with the Adult Book Club! September 19, October 17, November 21 & January 16 Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Library Conference Room The Library’s Adult Book Group is going strong after over 15 years of reading, and we always welcome new members. Members choose which books they would like to read, and everyone is encouraged to make suggestions. Many of our members joined in order to read books they might never have picked up. This summer’s reads included “Arcadia” by Lauren Groff, “Light Between Oceans” by M.L. Stedman, and “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. Please join us for a lively discussion. We do not meet in December. THE GIVING TREE CAN YOUR FINES!

November 12 - December 31

November 12 - December 31

Are you looking for a unique gift to honor a book-loving friend or family member? Visit the Paso Robles Library Foundation’s Giving Tree. Located near the Circulation Desk, the Giving Tree is adorned with book cover ornaments that represent new titles the Library would like to purchase. Choose a book ornament from the tree and bring it to the Circulation Desk with your donation of $25. You may designate the name of the person to whom you would like the book dedicated. Once staff receives your selected title, they will place a donation label in the book to commemorate your gift. All donations are fully tax deductible and support the Paso Robles City Library.

In the spirit of the holidays, the Paso Robles City Library is again offering patrons an opportunity to serve their community and reduce their overdue ¿nes at the same time.

"This year we will be accepting soup-can or larger cans of soup, chili, fruit and vegetables; 6 oz. or larger cans of meat, chicken or seafood; 1 lb. or larger packages of rice or pasta; and boxed family-sized foods such as macaroni and cheese." To take part in the food drive, bring your food items from the list above to the main desk in the library and ask to "Can Your Fines" Library staff will waive the appropriate amount of your ¿ne and collect your food for distribution to the Food Bank. Complete details of the program will be available at the main desk of the library beginning November 1, or call 237-3870 for more information.

Activity Guide, September - December 2013

HOLIDAY WREATH Thursday, December 12 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Library Conference Room Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holidays to attend the Library’s annual holiday event.

CONTAMINATION can make any recyclable material ineligible for recycling. Some materials, like metals, can be recycled even with high levels of contamination. Other materials, like polystyrene, are barely recyclable to begin with, and can be rendered completely ineligible for recycling even with the slightest trace of contamination.
