The Activity Guide is going green beginning in summer 2017, and in celebration our cover features a beautiful green space right here in Paso Robles. The Uptown Family Park garden is a magical place where children and families are invited to plant fruits, vegetables and flowers. Students from the Library Study Center, First Five Preschool and Georgia Browns’ Head Start Program often help to plant and tend the garden with the help of their teachers and staff from One Cool Earth. Pictured on the cover, sisters Charli and Maddie (L-R) enjoy a fruitful day in the garden. Located off of Oak Street (near 36th Street), the Uptown Family Park garden is a pilot project for future community gardens and was constructed as a component of the Uptown Family Park, a project completed by the City in 2014. They learn to swim —full immersion and independently—and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while reducing the likelihood of aquatic accidents.

LIBRARY BOOK DISCUSSION

Thursday, March 16 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. @ Library Conference Room 1000 Spring St. Join in a lively discussion of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which tells the true story of a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors. In spite of (or perhaps because of) her background, her cancer cells — taken without her knowledge — became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. In spite of the undeniable good these cells have done, neither Henrietta nor her family has benefitted from their use, raising medical ethics issues.

Henrietta Lacks’s story is not the only story of mishandled m e d i c a l decisions made during the 20th century. This film is based on the true story of the 1932 Tuskeegee syphilis experiment, this film tells the story from the perspective of Eunice Evers (Eunice Rivers in real life), a nurse who helped recruit men for the “experiment” which lasted for years instead of the three months originally proposed. Call or visit the library to find out the name of this film. (Rated PG)

January Book: The Midnight Assassin

BY SKIP HOLLANDSWORTH Beginning in 1884, Austin, Texas was terrorized by someone as vicious and diabolical as Jack the Ripper. For almost one year, the Midnight Assassin crisscrossed the entire city, striking on moonlit nights, savagely killing women from every race and class. At the time the concept of a serial killer was unthinkable, but the murders continued, the killer became Continued on next page>

ADULT PROGRAMS LIBRARY more brazen, and the citizens’ panic reached a fever pitch. Before it was all over, at least a dozen men would be arrested in connection with the murders, and the crimes would expose what one newspaper described as “the most extensive and profound scandal ever known in Austin.”

February Book: The Queen of the Night

BY ALEXANDER CHEE Lilliet Berne is a sensation of the Paris Opera, a legendary soprano with every accolade except an original role. When one is finally offered to her, she realizes with alarm that the libretto is based on a hidden piece of her past. As she mines her memories for clues to who betrayed her, she recalls her life as an orphan who left the American frontier for Europe and transformed herself from hippodrome rider to courtesan, from empress’s maid to debut singer, all the while weaving a complicated web of romance, obligation, and political intrigue.

March Book: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Locks

BY REBECCA SKLOOT

of Henrietta Lacks, a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors. In spite (or perhaps because) of her background, her cancer cells — taken without her knowledge — became one of the most important tools in the history of medicine. The first “immortal” cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though Henrietta has been dead for more than sixty years. In spite of the undeniable good these cells have done, neither Henrietta nor her family has benefitted from their use, raising medical ethics issues.

April Book: The Gilded Age

BY KARIN TANABE Anita Hemmings has longed to attend Vassar College. Now, a senior in the class of 1897, she is hiding a secret that would have banned her from admission: Anita is the only African-American student ever to attend Vassar. With her olive complexion and dark hair, she has successfully passed as white, but now finds herself rooming with the scion of one of New York’s most prominent families. Anita is pulled into her roommate’s sphere of influence, finding out what it is to be treated as a wealthy white woman. Set against the backdrop of the Gilded Age when old money traditions collided with modern ideas, this novel tells the story of how one woman risked everything for the chance at a better life.
