A Message from Julie Dahlen Director of Library & Recreation Services “Keep on rockin’ in the free world.” – Neil Young. I ring in the New Year with an abundance of emotions: Optimism at the reopening of Centennial Pool in May 2016, pride as our downtown City Park undergoes an exciting renovation, and gratitude for all who guided our City to this rebirth. Topping that list is my boss, Jim App. This Activity Guide marks his retirement as our City Manager after an unprecedented 18 years at the helm. Jim managed through the toughest

times with his wry sense of humor, profound intelligence and sincere desire to support the best interests of his community. I learned much from you, Jim, not the least of which is to be concise and succinct. So, I’ll end as I began: “Keep on rockin’ in the free world,” Jim, with all the sentiments Neil Young intended. And, thank you.

Scanlan has painted watercolor for 15 years and enjoys painting landscapes both on the Central Coast and in the Sierra Nevadas. Painting brings a sense of peace and joy. One never knows what will happen to the colors as the water has its way with it. While she loves the surprises that watercolor can produce, she sometimes enjoys the control of oil painting. Kinder Swim Results in weeks not years! Toddlers and older children are taught the swim-float-swim sequence. They learn to swim —full immersion and independently—and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while reducing the likelihood of aquatic accidents. This program evolves from survival skills to recreational swimming with beginning strokes within a short time period and allows your child and you to enjoy the water safely.

ACTIVITY GUIDE | January-May 2016

Betty Scanlan grew up traveling the world with her Army family. Her mother, an oil painter, had a strong influence on her daughter’s desire to one day pick up a brush and express what she saw. As a child, Scanlan won awards for animal sculptures, charcoal drawings, and paintings of insects and birds. After a long career as a nurse and raising her family, Scanlan finally had time to take up her brushes and study watercolor. She has painted with many local masters, but the strongest influence on her art has been John Barnard. She loves his sense of freedom and whimsy. Her favorite old master is Cezanne. Her style is bold with strong contrasts and is evolving to be more free and impressionistic.

As a child, Kay Eichert was always drawing pictures with anything she could find. Her interest in art carried through high school with many elective art classes, then years passed without art in her life—marriage, children, and a career. In 1970, she moved to southwestern Oregon and joined the Coquille Valley Art Association. Eichert moved to San Juan Island in Washington, and then back to California where she continued to paint, receiving great art instruction at Allan Hancock City College. “I have been extremely fortunate to paint with some wonderfully-talented artists with the Paso Robles Art Association, most notably John Barnard, to whom I will ever be beholden for his patience and kind criticism,” Eichert says. Most recently, she attended a workshop in New Mexico at Georgia O’Keefe’s Ghost Ranch.

March Artist of the Month:

Page Graeber Page Graeber has lived and worked in Paso Robles for 25 years and has won numerous awards. “This year I would like to display my newest directions in painting, which will include acrylic-mixed media-collage. Each large painting denotes an area of study found in our library!”

an intriguing read. On a brisk autumn day in 1686, 18-year-old Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt. But her splendid new home is not welcoming. Johannes is kind yet distant, and leaves Nella alone with his sister, the fearsome Marin. Nella’s life unexpectedly changes when Johannes presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. To furnish it, she engages the services of a miniaturist—an elusive and enigmatic artist whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in eerie ways. Johannes’s gift helps Nella pierce the closed world of the Brandt household. But as she uncovers its unusual secrets, she begins to understand—and fear—the escalating dangers around them. Only one person seems to see the fate that awaits them. Is the miniaturist the key to their salvation . . . or the architect of their destruction?

Macdonald Continued Similar in theme to Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, Helen Macdonald’s H Is for Hawk explores the grieving process following the death of a loved one. When Helen Macdonald’s father died suddenly on a London street, she was devastated. An experienced falconer—Helen had been captivated by hawks since childhood—she’d never before been tempted to train one of the most vicious predators, the goshawk. But in her grief, she saw that the goshawk’s fierce and feral temperament mirrored her own. Resolving to purchase and raise the deadly creature as a means to cope with her loss, she adopted Mabel and turned to the guidance of The Once and Future King author T. H. White’s chronicle The Goshawk to begin her challenging endeavor. Projecting herself “in the hawk’s wild mind to tame her” tested the limits of Macdonald’s humanity and changed her life. Heart-wrenching and humorous, this book is an unflinching account of bereavement and a unique look at the magnetism of an extraordinary beast, with a parallel examination of a legendary writer’s eccentric falconry. Obsession, madness, memory, myth, and history combine to achieve a distinctive blend of nature writing and memoir from an outstanding literary innovator.

run their Orange County home. But when bad investments crater their bank account, it all comes down to Araceli, their somewhat prickly Mexican maid. One night, an argument between the couple turns physical, and a misunderstanding leaves the children in Araceli’s care. Their parents unreachable, she takes them to central Los Angeles in the hopes of finding Scott’s estranged Mexican father—an earnest quest that soon becomes a colossal misadventure, with consequences that ripple through every strata of the sprawling city. The Barbarian Nurseries is a masterful tale of contemporary Los Angeles, a novel as alive as the city itself.

in the extreme. But in perhaps his first unselfish act ever, he agrees to drive them – plus their pungent dog, Norman—to the Math Olympiad and a prize that could change things for Jess’s family forever. . . .

May: The Marriage of Opposites

By Alice Hoffman

April: One Plus One

By Jojo Moyes

Jojo Moyes’s unlikely love story One Plus One promises to be hilarious, heartbreaking and a compelling read. Suppose your life sucks. A lot. Your husband has done a vanishing act. You’re trying to keep your family afloat, with two jobs and two children. You’ve always been an optimist, but it isn’t easy. That’s Jess Thomas’s life in a nutshell, and it’s about to get a whole lot more complicated. Jess’s oddball teenage stepson is being bullied, and her math-whiz daughter has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that they can’t afford. Jess has spent her life Doing the Right Thing. But what if, just this once, she did something that was definitely The Wrong Thing—something that might make all the difference for her family? Ed Nicholls is a brilliant tech millionaire whose life is falling apart when he happens upon Jess and her family stranded on the side of the road. She’s stunned to realize that her knight in shining armor is Geeky Ed—a man she considers obnoxious

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Dovekeepers and The Museum of Extraordinary Things comes The Marriage of Opposites, a forbidden love story set on the tropical island of St. Thomas centered on the amazing woman who gave birth to painter Camille Pissarro—the Father of Impressionism. Growing up on idyllic St. Thomas in the early 1800’s, Rachel dreams of life in faraway Paris. Rachel’s mother, a pillar of their small refugee community of Jews who escaped the Inquisition, has never forgiven her daughter for being a difficult girl who refuses to live by the rules. Growing up, Rachel’s salvation is their maid Adelle’s belief in her strengths, and her deep, lifelong friendship with Jestine, Adelle’s daughter. But Rachel’s life is not her own. She is married off to a widower with three children to save her father’s business. When her husband dies suddenly and his handsome, much younger nephew, Frédérick, arrives from France to settle the estate, Rachel seizes her own life story, beginning a defiant, passionate love affair that sparks a scandal that affects all of her family, including her favorite son, who will become one of the greatest artists of France.

Pickleball is a racquet sport that has been heralded as “the fastest growing sport in the country.” It is like tennis—but different. Like racquet ball—but different. The ball is like a whiffle ball—but different. The court is like tennis—but smaller. We use a paddle—but this is not paddle tennis. The net is 2” shorter than a tennis net. Pickleball is fun, very social, and you get an excellent workout with less stress on the joints than the game of tennis. Equipment is available for you to use so you can try the sport—so drop in anytime. CONTAMINATION can make any recyclable material ineligible for recycling. Some materials, like metals, can be recycled even with high levels of contamination. Other materials, like polystyrene, are barely recyclable to begin with, and can be rendered completely ineligible for recycling even with the slightest trace of contamination.
