A Message from Julie Dahlen Director of Library & Recreation Services

M

y son is a college graduate thanks to Harry Potter. Will was seven years old when J.K. Rowling published her first Harry Potter book. For the next 10 years, each new installment in the Harry Potter series was cause for celebration – and another reason to visit the Paso Robles City Library for similar stories of sorcerers and suspense. Engaging boys with books can be challenging. According to children’s author, Jon Scieszka, “Research shows

that boys are having trouble reading, and that boys are getting worse at reading. The good news is that research also shows that boys will read — if they are given reading that interests them.” As another school year begins, I invite you to partner with Paso Robles Public Library to connect your boys – and girls -- to books which will spark a life-long love of reading, just as Harry Potter did for Will. Did I mention that he is a college graduate?

November Artist of the Month: Joseph Amanzio

In 1997, Pluma formed Warpaint Graphics, specializing in print media—magazines, logos, business collateral and wine labels. Today, her primary focus is on fine art, exploring the transition and contrast in both art and life. Her work is a reminder of the importance of maintaining balance.

Each year, community members give a gift of a special book honoring a book-loving family member or friend through the Library Foundation’s Giving Tree program. Located near the Circulation Desk, the Giving Tree is covered with book “ornaments”that represent new titles the Library would like to purchase. Donors choose an ornament from the tree, and with their $25 donation, the book is purchased and a special donation label is placed in the book naming the person to whom the book will be dedicated. All donations are fully tax deductible and support the Paso Robles City Library.

Amanzio travelled extensively in the US and Europe, recording hundreds of images for his lectures on architecture and urban design. After retiring in 2005, he returned to the artistic and creative realms of photography. His award-winning digital photography, which includes a variety of subjects, demonstrates his love for architectural-like compositions in light, space, form and detail.

Kinder Swim Results in weeks not years! Toddlers and older children are taught the swim-float-swim sequence. They learn to swim —full immersion and independently—and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while reducing the likelihood of aquatic accidents. This program evolves from survival skills to recreational swimming with beginning strokes within a short time period and allows your child and you to enjoy the water safely.

She returned to school in later years at Valley College in Los Angeles to study printmaking, design, and more painting and drawing. Fleming is in the L.A. Ruby Slippers Book Arts Group This group of highly creative individuals who express themselves through the medium of book form will display original, altered, and handmade books in the Library’s main display case during the month of October.

The Library’s Adult Book Group is going strong after 17+ years of reading, and we always welcome new members. Our group reads popular literary fiction and non-fiction books (usually two fiction books and one non-fiction book in a three-month cycle). Many of our members joined in order to read books they might otherwise have never picked up.

September: Station Eleven

Janice Pluma November Display Case:

BookPlates!

By Emily St. John Mandel

November will highlight the artist and celebrity plate auction—BookPlates! Various plates will be put on display for patrons to peruse before the November 14 event.

Janice Pluma’s interest in art began in childhood and never diminished. She spent much of her adult life studying fine art in colleges in California, Colorado, and North Dakota. In 1988, she earned a B.S. in Applied Art and Design and worked for various San Luis Obispo county newspapers and magazines. In 1997, Pluma formed Warpaint Graphics, specializing in print media—magazines, logos, business collateral and wine labels. Today, her primary focus is on fine art, exploring the transition and contrast in both art and life. Her work is a reminder of the importance of maintaining balance.

September Display Case:

Matthew Pomerico Matthew Pomerico describes himself as more of a craftsman than an artist, but viewing his fine woodcarvings will make one think he is definitely both. His wooden toys, Christmas ornaments and cowboy scenes make excellent gifts. Having carved for many years, Pomerico’s distinct carving style is highly imaginative and intricately creative.

December Display Case:

Fiber Sculptures Jana Seely creates sculptures that aim to captivate viewers with a hint of mystery, myth, or magic. Tantalizing creatures or beings—and their stories—are the focus of her work. The pieces are made primarily of needlefelted wool and represent the artist’s interest in natural history specimens, literature, and folklore. “Art & Story” is a display designed to spotlight the connection between Seely’s fiber sculptures and the books that inspired their creation.

Winner of multiple awards, including the Arthur C. Clarke Award, Station Eleven is an audacious, darkly glittering novel set in the eerie days of civilization’s collapse. It tells the spellbinding story of a Hollywood star, his would-be savior, and a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.

November: The Nightingale

By Kristin Hannah

Wednesday, September 23 6:30 p.m. Library Conference Room The Paso Robles Friends of the Library is excited to offer a program that will be truly out of this world! Featuring information about planets, nebulae and galaxies, and how to view them, this astronomical adventure is presented by Richard Wade. Weather permitting, attendees will be able to view the moon and possibly Saturn using Wade’s high-powered telescope. With Master’s Degrees in Educational Psychology and Art, Wade has presented information throughout California about what science knows and how science works. Using his artistic talents, Wade has created unique objects to clearly explain scientific concepts and presents them with a contagious energy. This engaging “journey” to outer space is not to be missed!

Employers will learn common misconceptions about independent contractors, ways to combat payroll tax fraud, how to distinguish between employees and independent contractors, statutory and exempt employment, and resources they can use to help classify workers.

Federal/State Basic Payroll Tax Seminar Friday, October 16 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Library Conference Room Representatives from the EDD and IRS will discuss California and federal payroll reporting requirements, including forms, employer obligations, and alternative filing. Independent contractor information will be included, but will not be the focus as in the September seminar.

TAX SEMINARS THE GIVING TREE

Kristin Hannah tells the story of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love and freedom in World War II German-occupied France. This heartbreakingly beautiful novel celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women.

Help the Library Foundation provide needed book titles for the Library’s collection and take care of some holiday shopping at the same time! Each year, community members give a gift of a special book honoring a book-loving family member or friend through the Library Foundation’s Giving Tree program. Located near the Circulation Desk, the Giving Tree is covered with book “ornaments” that represent new titles the Library would like to purchase. Donors choose an ornament from the tree, and with their $25 donation, the book is purchased and a special donation label is placed in the book naming the person to whom the book will be dedicated.

CAN YOUR FINES In the spirit of the holidays, the Paso Robles City Library is again offering patrons an opportunity to serve their community and reduce their overdue fines at the same time. During November 23 - December 31, the Library invites patrons to “can” their fines, forgiving $1.00 in fines for every canned or non-perishable food item they donate (maximum $16 per library card account). “This program provides an opportunity for families and individuals to help out those in need in our community while paying off overdue fines owed to the Library,” explains Library Manager Karen Christiansen. “This year we will be accepting soup-can-or–largersized cans of soup, chili, fruit and vegetables; 6-ounce-or-larger-sized cans of meat, chicken or seafood; onepound-or-larger-sized packages of rice or pasta; and boxed family-sized foods such as macaroni and cheese.” For more information about the “Can Your Fines” program, call 237-3870.

library service moved from the Carnegie Library building to the new City Hall building. Starting with only a handful of volunteers, the program has grown to be one of California’s most innovative models of volunteerism in library service.

I joined the Paso Robles Library volunteer program soon after we moved into the area because I wanted to get involved in the community. As I was a home schooling mom, I spent a lot of time at the library, so it seemed like a good fit. Also, much as I love my kids, volunteering at the library gave me a little time away from them! One of my favorite jobs is to unpack all the new books as they arrive (it's like Christmas!) and then prepare them to go out on the shelves. Knowing that these items will be enjoyed by many people is a great feeling.

Today, the Volunteer Program is essential to the daily operation of the Library with over 120 trained volunteers contributing over 18,000 hours of their time and talents each year. But by far the contributions Library volunteers

The staff and fellow volunteers are wonderful to work with, which is part of the reason I'm still here after all these years! I was proud to be able to contribute to maintaining the library's services during the downturn; when so many other libraries were cutting hours we were able to stay open longer. My time at the library has been and continues to be an integral part of each week.

Line Dancing - Beginning A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows without regard for the gender of the individuals, all facing each other or

The ball is like a whiffle ball— but different. The court is like tennis— but smaller. We use a paddle—but this is not paddle tennis. The net is 2” shorter than a tennis net. Pickleball is fun, very social, and you get an excellent workout with less stress on the joints than the game of tennis. Equipment is available for you to use so you can try the sport—so drop in anytime. CONTAMINATION can make any recyclable material ineligible for recycling. Some materials, like metals, can be recycled even with high levels of contamination. Other materials, like polystyrene, are barely recyclable to begin with, and can be rendered completely ineligible for recycling even with the slightest trace of contamination.
