This edition features editorials of the Olympic extreme sport of BMX, the “Los Angeles” Cave, a surfing experience, as well as, the pleasures of a river. MONTE CHOCA Y SU CATEDRAL DE BAMBÚ Por Tania Marrero
L
ocalizado en el Municipio de Corozal se encuentra el Bosque Estatal de Monte Choca. Este monte, fue denominado con el nombre de su último capataz, Choca y comprende de 244.73 cuerdas en las que albergan una gran diversidad de especies. Entre estas podemos observar granadillos, ceiba, moca, maricao y pomarrosas las cuales podrían narrar años de historia. Evidencia de hechos pasados también se perciben en las fosas aledañas a los tributarios del Río Mavillas y que fueron creadas por mineros españoles para la extracción del oro.
En este bosque se distinguen zonas de hondonadas, donde la humedad permite el crecimiento de helechos arbóreos. Así como también la “Catedral de bambú”, área asombrosa donde estas gigantescas plantas se unen formando domos sobre una quebrada. El bambú es considerado como un árbol pero realmente es una grama y es la planta de mayor crecimiento en el planeta la cual florece cada cien años aproximadamente. Este hecho fue reportado recientemente en Monte Choca. Al recorrer las veredas del monte puedes presenciar la mariposa monarca, caracoles de concha aplanadas y serpientes como la corredora (Alsophis portoricensis). Mientras que en la charca artificial habita el zaramago, el comeñame, la
reina mora, el zumbadorcito de Puerto Ricoel julian chivíLa observación
de aves es uno de los atractivos de este bosque al igual que el vivero, pieza fundamental del programa de reforestación del Recinto de Río Piedras de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. El bosque cuenta con un centro comunal y un pequeño museo además de recorridos guiados a través de las veredas. El bosque está accesible a la comunidad para realizar diversas actividades incluyendo un campamento que se ofrece durante el verano. M
onte Choca State Forest is located in the municipality of Corozal. This forest, named after its last foreman Asunción Ortiz ”Choca” , consists of 244.73 acres that are home to an amazing diversity of species. Amongst these we find the Granadillo, the silk cotton tree, the cabbage angelin, the doncella, .and the rose apple trees, centenarian trees that could narrate years of history. Evidence of past activities can still be noted in the pits found near the streams of the Mavillas River, constructed by Spaniard miners for the extraction of gold.

This forest is notable for its hollow zones where moisture allows the growth of fern trees, as well as the “Bamboo Cathedral�, an amazing area where giant vines form domes over the creek. Bamboo is considered a tree but is actually a grass; is the fastest growing plant on the planet and blooms every hundred years or so. This event was reported recently in Monte Choca.
When walking through its trails you may encounter the Monarck butterfly, yellow land snails, and the Puerto Rican Racer snake. The artificial pond serves as new habitat for the Piedbilled Grebe, the Queen blackberry, the Puerto Rican Bullfinch, the Puerto Rican Emerald and the Black-whiskered Vireo. Bird watching is one of the greatest attractions of the forest, as well as its nursery, a cornerstone of the
reforestation program of the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. A Community Center, a small museum, guided tours through the trails, and a summer camp are some of the facilities available for community activities. n Puerto Rico muy poco se conoce de este lago el cual queda localizado en la parte oeste central de la Isla, entre el barrio Bartolo de Lares y los barrios Guayo y Guayabo Dulce del Municipio de Adjuntas. El lago se nutre de las aguas del Río Cidra, el Río Guayo y varias quebradas tributarias. Sus aguas son utilizadas para la producción de electricidad y riego. En este embalse se puede pescar la lobina, la chopa, el barbudo y la tilapia cotorro. Así como el poder contemplar los sembradíos de café en sus orillas, escuchar la tranquilidad y observar aves. Este lugar fue construido en 1956 y ofrece una vista panorámica hermosa. Anímate a aventurarte con la naturaleza y a conocer nuestra Isla.
Lake Guayo
I
n Puerto Rico, very little is known of this lake which is located in the west central part of the island, between the Bartolo neighborhood in Lares and Guayo and Guayabo Dulce neighborhoods in Adjuntas. Waters of the Cidra River, Guayo River and several tributary streams feed the lake. Its waters are used for electricity production and irrigation. In this lake you can fish largemouth bass, black bream, the bearded and tilapia parrot. You can also admire the coffee plantations on its banks, sense the tranquility and bird watch. This place was built in 1956 and offers a beautiful panoramic view. Dare to venture with nature and learn about our Island.

l BMX se originó a los comienzos de los años 60 en California. Cuando los jóvenes intentaban imitar a los campeones de motocross con sus bicicletas en una modalidad muy concreta y arriesgada. El deporte se realiza en una pista similar a la de motocross pero con la diferencia del terreno que se utiliza. En la de motocross, el terreno suele estar húmedo, mientras que la de race es una arena arcillosa compactada la cual evita incrustaciones de la bici. Los dos tipos de bicicletas definidas para el deporte son las del diámetro de la llanta: 20” (normal) y 24” (cruiser). En estas pistas los competidores hacen un
despliegue de trucos y carreras dentro de olímpico en el año 2008, realizando un circuito con una longitud aproximada su debut en los Juegos Olímpicos de de 350m a 500m. BMX: Growing Olympian in PR
B
BMX originated in the early ‘60’s in California, when young people started to imitate motocross champions with their bikes in a specific and dangerous modality. The sport is performed on a similar track as motocross, but uses a different ground. In motocross, the ground is usually wet, while these races use a more claylike compacted soil that avoid bike inlay. Two types of bike diameters are identified for this sport, the 20” (normal) and the 24” (cruiser). On the track competitors showcase their tricks and race in a circuit of approximately 350m to 500m in length. Competitions are divided by age groups and rounds are qualified by score. Puerto Rico currently has five
tracks to officially practice the sport; these are located in the municipalities of Barceloneta, Rincon, Ceiba, Juncos and Cabo Rojo. Races are usually organized by the BMX Commission, a Branch within the P.R. Cycling Federation, which is chaired by Ms. Erika Ortiz. BMX was considered an Olympic sport in 2008, making its debut in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. So we need to encourage our youth to practice this sport which has an Olympic future. All you need to start practicing is long pants, a long sleeve T shirt, a full face helmet, and gloves; so go ahead. You can get more information by calling (787) 566-5349. Recently, the Olympic Cup Competition was held in the municipality of Rincon where many children, youth and adults of both genders stood out demonstrating their skills in the sport.

guías. Esta experiencia es diferente a cualquier visita a un río; es una aventura con seguridad y cariño familiar. Esta aventura la pueden realizar niños desde 12 años en adelante y es coordinada por la compañía Rocaliza. Esta compañía también ofrece cursos de descenso por soga “rapelling” y escalada.
E
n busca de otras experiencias, nos comentaron de una aventura a realizar en el Municipio Autónomo de Caguas y en la cual se podía hacer descenso en cuerdas y tirolianos. Con esa meta en mente fue que llegamos al Barrio San Salvador donde conocimos a nuestros guías Diego y Héctor quienes nos orientaron del equipo y de la excursión que estábamos próximos a comenzar. Una vez ya listos, iniciamos el camino río arriba el cual demuestra la grandeza de la naturaleza con unas piedras colocadas como escalones y de donde discurría agua cristalina. Durante el camino, los guías nos fueron explicando las especies de plantas que observamos. Al llegar al destino final, a la altura de una cascada de 80 pies aproximadamente, es que comenzamos hacer el descenso por soga. El bajar y sentir sobre uno el agua de la cascada es algo místico y emocionante. Luego comienzas río abajo (siempre con la ayuda y seguridad de los guías) hasta llegar a los tirolianos. Al concluir la aventura, los guías nos llevaron a la casa de la Sra. Benencia Vega y su familia, quienes nos recibieron con un almuerzo criollo y atenciones familiares. Esto con el fin de fomentar la integración de la comunidad en el ecoturismo y el compartir con la familia de uno de los

S
earching for other experiences, we were made aware of a river adventure taking place in the Autonomous Municipality of Caguas where we could practice waterfall rappelling and ziplines. This is how we arrived at San Salvador Community and met our guides Diego and Hector, who advised us about the equipment and the details of the excursion that we were about to begin. Once ready,
we started our journey up river, taking advantage of the stair like formation of the rocks, with crystal clear water flowing between them, attesting to the greatness of nature. During our travel our guides took time to identify for us the plants that we were seeing. Reaching our final destiny, at the height of about an 80 feet waterfall, we started a rappelling. The sensation of the water falling on you as you descend was something mystical and emotional. Afterwards, we embark down river (always with the assistance and security of our guides) until we reach the ziplines. Upon completing the adventure,
the guides took us to Mrs. Benencia Vega’s Family home, who delighted us with a Creole lunch and plenty of family kindness. The objective is to foster community Integration in ecotourism activities and cultural exchange with one of the guides’ family.
This was a different river visit experience; it offered trusted security and family thoughtfulness. Coordinated through Rocaliza Company it can be experience by adventurous over 12 years of age. V
isitar el centro de la Isla es experimentar la naturaleza, la cultura y el folclor en su máxima expresión. Desde que te montas a la guagua de la excursión, sientes el aire de aventura. Una vez llegas al lugar destinatario, lo que predomina es la seguridad, el equipo y la diversión. Los sonidos de la naturaleza se entrelazan con el servicio fabuloso brindado por Rossano, el guía que nos hizo sentir en otra
dimensión. Luego de ir en dirección montaña arriba encontramos una ruta de tres tirolianos, cuyas vistas son fascinantes. Llegas a rapelear montaña abajo para entrar a una cueva sin imaginar qué descubrirás. Al entrar a la cueva toda la adrenalina está en su máxima expresión. Para llegar al área de descanso tienes tiradas al agua que realmente no hay máquina de diversiones que se compare a la adrenalina, suspenso y aventura que experimentas. Una vez dentro del salón donde almuerzas y el cual es
ambientado con almohadones y velas, no hay atmósfera de restaurante que pueda simular eso. Para regresar, la ruta consiste en nadar por el río y atravesar más fango. Esto hasta que llegas al punto de rapelear para subir la montaña que te llevará a la salida. T
raveling inland on the Island means experiencing nature, culture and folklore to its maximum expression. Just by getting on the bus you feel a sense of adventure. Once you arrive at your destiny, security, equipment and fun dominate your trip. Nature’s sounds merge with the fabulous service offered by our guide Rossano, who created the impression of being in another dimension. Climbing up hill we came upon a trail with three ziplines, the views were fascinating. Upon arrival, we
rappelled down the mountain to enter a cave without a slightest idea of what you will discover. To reach the resting area you have to jump in and out through the water, there is no park ride that compares with the adrenaline, suspense and adventure that you experience. Once inside the room you are served lunch, in an ambience created with cushions and candles, no restaurant could simulate this atmosphere. To return you must swim through the river and mud, until you reach a point in which you must climb up the mountain to exit. Mona, cuyo nombre se deriva del cacique arauco Amoná se caracteriza por sus acantilados. En ésta podemos visitar las dos áreas de acampar que se encuentran localizadas en las playas Sardinera y Pájaros. Desde la entrada
de sus maravillosas cuevas, como lo es la más conocida Cueva Lirio, puedes ver varias ventanas que muestran paisajes sacados de revistas. Por su parte, la Cueva de Agua tiene una entrada que no te anticipa la aventura a través de un orificio que culminará en una cámara de agua, lugar descriptivo como uno especial para Dioses. El faro es otro de los lugares que puedes visitar y el cual te transporta en la historia. La vista y el silencio que lo acompaña te hacen sentir que estas en

I
had heard many stories about Mona Island and its wonders, but nothing I had seen in photos or videos honored this paradisiacal natural beauty. Mona, name derived from the Indian arauco chief “Amona” is characterized by its steep rocky coastline. There are two camping sites on the Island for visitors’; one near Sardinera Beach and another near Pajaros Beach. From the entrance of its marvelous caves, Lirio Cave being the most popular, you can sight views that seem taken out of a magazine. In complement “Cueva de Agua” or Water Cave has an entrance that anticipates an adventure by way of an opening that ends in a water chamber, described as a special place for the Gods. A visit to the light house takes you on a journey through history. The views and quietness give you a sense of being in another world. Mona’s flora is predominantly composed of cactus and shrubs. Mona’s endemic iguana (Cyclura stejnegeri) is distinctive of its fauna, as well as, a great diversity of birds and exotic species such as wild goats and pigs. An important fact about Mona is that it is considered the most important and largest nesting area for the endangered Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) in Puerto Rico and one of the most important in the Caribbean. Mona Island Natural Reserve is administered by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, agency responsible for issuing visiting permits to the island for camping and research purposes. It offers locals and visitors the opportunity to learn or improve their skills in this exciting sport. Its founder, pro champion Kelvin Hernández Cintrón, who has won numerous events in this sport, seeks to promote this sport in the south and stresses the importance of safety among practitioners. Sabías que el tinglar (Dermochelys coriacea) es la tortuga marina más grande del mundo? Puede medir de 6-7 pies y pesar hasta 2,000 libras siendo la única tortuga que tiene su caparazón blando. Se alimenta principalmente de las aguavivas y sobrevive desde la época de los dinosaurios, encontrándose en peligro de extinción. El tinglar anida de 3 a 8 veces, en un lapso de tiempo de 7 a 14 días entre
los meses de febrero y agosto. En cada desove, el tinglar pone alrededor de 100 huevos y los más cercanos a la superficie son huevos falsos (no tienen embrión). Esto como método para distraer a los depredadores. El grupo de CESAM (Capítulo Estudiantil Sociedad Ambiente Marino) es un grupo de jóvenes universitarios, en su mayoría buzos, que se unieron por la protección y conservación de los recursos marinos. Marino, entidad reconocida en PR y el Caribe por sus investigaciones y proyectos relacionados a fincas y la acuacultura de corales. Este grupo en conjunto con otros movimientos tuvieron la a oportunidad de presenciar un momento mágico en la playa de Ocean Park, una eclosión de tinglares. Los eventos de eclosión, ocurren aproximadamente 60 días luego del desove. El día 62 ocurrió la eclosión y las pequeñas tortugas (neonatos) brotaron de la arena en busca del mar. Se contabilizó 65 neonatos que llegaron al mar. Al presenciar la
eclosión se deben seguir las siguientes reglas: el apagar las luces que hay en las áreas vecinas, no tomar fotografías con “flash” ya que puede desorientar a las tortugas, respetar una distancia considerada para no alterar el proceso natural y guardar silencio. Esta oportunidad brinda a uno el entusiasmo de ayudar a esta y otras especies. ¡Protejamos esta especie marina que endulza nuestras playas y el Caribe! ¡Son parte de nuestra naturaleza que compone tanto y nos da vida!
id you know that the Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is the largest marine turtle in the world? It can measure between 6-7 feet and weigh up to 2,000 pounds, being the only sea turtle that has a rubbery carapace. They feed primarily on jellyfish, they have been in existence since the dinosaur’s period, and are considered endangered. Leatherbacks lay eggs 3 to 8 times, in a period of 7 to 14 days between the months of February and August. During the breeding season Leatherback’s can lay up to 100 eggs, the ones closest to the surface are false (they have no embryos) making detection by predators difficult. The Marine Environmental Society Student Chapter, CESAM for its Spanish acronym, is a group of university students, majorly divers, that came together for the protection and conservation of marine resources. They are members of the Marine Environmental Society, a well known entity in Puerto Rico and in the Caribbean for their research and coral aquaculture projects. This group, in company of other local movements, had the opportunity to presence a magical moment at Ocean Park beach, for a Leatherback hatching or Eclosion. Eclosion events occur around 60

days after nesting. On this particular day 62, hundreds of small turtles emerged from the sand in search of the sea. Beware of the following rules when watching an eclosion: turn off the lights and do not take photos with flash to reduce hatchling disorientations, maintain a recommend distance and do not interfere with the natural process, and be silent. This experience serves as motivation and enthusiasm to help this and other species. Help us protect this marine species that provides charm to our beaches and the Caribbean! They are a component of our nature; that also grants us life!

ste verano participé de la Convivencia Ambiental, campamento auspiciado por la Reserva Nacional de la Bahía de Jobos y el comité Dialogo Ambiental. En el mismo pude conocer de la Reserva de Bahía de Jobos y sus recursos. Además, visitamos la Reserva Natural de Humacao y Casa Pueblo en Adjuntas, el cual fue el mejor road trip. Allí aprendí sobre su historia y conocí su famoso café, además de los huertos hidropónicos que tienen en las facilidades. Casa Pueblo cuenta con su propia emisora y tuve la oportunidad de ser locutora por un día, ¡hablar en radio me encantó! Después de visitar Casa Pueblo fuimos al Bosque del Pueblo, para llegar necesitas transportación y reservación. Ese bosque es bello y la vista es espectacular. En fin, les recomiendo que vayan para que pasen un día de campo diferente y que participen el próximo año del campamento.

An Environmental Coexistence Summer

T
his summer I participated Environmental Residential camp sponsored by the Jobos Bay National Reserve and Dialogo Ambiental. Here I got to know the Jobos Bay Reserve and its resources. I also got to visit the Humacao Nature Reserve and Casa Pueblo in Adjuntas, which became the best road trip ever. I learned about its history and its famous coffee as well as the hydroponic gardens that are in the facilities. Casa Pueblo has its own radio station and I had the opportunity to be broadcaster for a day, I loved talking on radio! After visiting Casa Pueblo we went to “Bosque del Pueblo” Forest, you need transportation and reservations to get there. This forest is beautiful and the view is spectacular. Therefore, I recommend visit and experience a different day in the field; also participate in next year’s camp.

La cocina es una fusión de sabores caribeños e internacionales creados por el Chef Ángel Santiago, joven que forma parte del Equipo Culinario de Puerto Rico. Así que imagínense los manjares que este mesón gastronómico ofrece. En Lola Eclectic Cuisin la calidad, el servicio y la evolución son primordiales. El carisma de sus empleados, así como el ambiente que se respira te hacen sentir en completo deleite. Sus aperitivos están en otro nivel como lo son las puntitas de dorado envueltas en mezcla de bacalaítos y servidas con salsa aioli, los eggrolls de langosta o las bolitas de maduro rellenas de chorizo.
