President's Letter Summer is all year round in Puerto Rico. We enjoy the best weather and the most spectacular Christmas parties and celebrations. Una vez llegamos el guía da las instrucciones de seguridad y de los equipos. Ya preparados comienza la aventura hacia el sendero que nos llevaría hacia nuestro destino. El primer descenso de la cueva es de 280 pies continuos y es uno de los más altos. Al bajar quedé maravillado con el espectacular mundo subterráneo de los alrededores.
Al llegar todos abajo, el guía nos llevó por la enorme cueva y sus laberintos. Pasamos por pasillos, gateamos y nos enfangamos un poco durante el recorrido. Luego llegamos a una bóveda con una gran cantidad de murciélagos y guabás. Al final del pasillo realizamos otra escalada de unos 50 pies aproximadamente. Para este tipo de actividad debes ir acompañado de personas con experiencia en cuevas y soga. Además, tienes que llevar ropa adecuada y tener un mínimo de experiencia en este tipo de actividades junto a buena condición física. One of the most interesting ecosystems that are found in Puerto Rico is its caves. These structures are formed naturally by the erosion of limestone that is caused by the subterranean rivers. Most of these caves are found at the central areas of the Island. This time we went to explore “Cueva de los Vientos” (Cave of Winds) which is located in the municipality of San German. Once we got there, the guide instructs us on security and the use of the equipment. Once we got that done, we start on our adventure hiking towards the trail that will take us to our destiny. The rst drop is about 280 feet and one of the highest one. After arriving at the bottom of this drop I was mar veled at the amazing subterranean world and its surrounding. After we all got down there, the guide took us through the huge cave and its maze. We walked through halls, crawled and got all muddy during the tour. Then we arrived at a vault that was populated with a huge number of bats and scorpions. At the end of this hall we climbed up approximately 50 feet. To engage in this type of activity you should be in the company of people with experience in cave exploration and rope use. You also should be appropriately dressed for this. Sikeo, o tierra alta como le llamaban los indios taínos, es una montaña en medio del paisaje de la isla de Mona. Desde la travesía en barco disfrutas el paisaje; el fondo del mar se ve increíble. Siempre que visito Sikeo quedo sorprendido con el azul profundo y cristalino que reflejan sus aguas. Al llegar, ya ansioso por lanzarme al agua, preparé mi equipo de buceo y mi cámara. Una vez listos, nos lanzamos y nos convertimos en peces al ingresar a ese mágico paisaje. El agua es tan clara que se te hace difícil decidir hacia dónde mirar. La escena submarina es grandiosa y el buceo en Desecheo solo puede ser descrito como una caja de sorpresas. Los acompañantes en esta aventura son corales, esponjas, diferentes clases de peces, tortugas y tiburones. Durante los meses de invierno puedes ir acompañado del canto de ballenas jorobadas. Bellos arrecifes de todas clases, cavernas, túneles, surcos y lo

que queda de un barco hundido junto a su inmenso ancla son parte de las decoraciones marinas que engalanan el recorrido. En esta área hay buceo de dificultad fácil y avanzada. Mi área favorita es el famoso “yellow reef” pero hay que ser cauteloso con las corrientes y la profundidad del lugar. Es importante conservar estas bellezas naturales para continuar disfrutando de la diversidad marina que ofrece el área. Por esta razón, desde el año 2000 media milla náutica alrededor de Desecheo fue designada como reserva marina y zona de no pesca. Con la ayuda de todos Desecheo es, y seguirá siendo, uno de los mejores lugares para bucear en Puerto Rico. Para realizar esta buceada puede consultar a un operador de buceo del área.

Sikeo or high land as it was called by the native tainos, is a mountain in the middle of the island of Mona's landscape. As you travel by boat to get there you can enjoy this beautiful landscape, the bottom of the sea looks incredible. Everytime I visit Sikeo, I am surprised by its deep blue and crystal clear waters. At arrival, and anxious to jump in the water, I get my scuba gear and my camera ready. We jump in the water and we become like sh in the magical environment. The water is so clear that it is hard to decide where to look because you want take it all in at once. The underwater scenery is of great beauty and the only way I can describe diving in Desecheo is saying that it is a treasure trove of suprises. The company in these diving adventures are corals, sponges, sh of all kind, turtles and sharks. During the cold months you will be serenated by the humpback whales singing. Beautiful coral reefs of varied kinds are there for your amazement and this includes the caverns, tunnels and a sunken ship lying beside its huge anchor that are part of the décor that makes this dive full of wonder. This area has diving for advanced divers as well as newbies. My favorite area is the famous yello reef but, you have to be careful because it deep and has strong currents. We have to understand the critical importance of conserving these natural beauties to be able to continue to enjoy the diverse marine life that this area is home to. For this very same reason, since the year 2000, half a mile around Desecheo was designated as a marine reserve and no shing zone. With the help of all of us, Desecheo is and will continue to be, one of the best places to dive in Puerto Rico. To enjoy this dive you should consult a local dive guide

ntre valles y montañas con vista al Mar Caribe se encuentra la Hacienda Paraíso en Cabo Rojo. Es un lugar excelente para pasarla en familiar y disfrutar de una exquisita comida al estilo puertorriqueño mientras disfrutas de un paisaje espectacular. Durante el paseo a caballo, el cual es un recorrido a través de las 700 cuerdas de terreno de la hacienda que colindan con los canales de La Parguera, conocerás la historia de este hermoso lugar e irás en una travesía en el tiempo. Con la compañía de un guía, podrás observar la cadena de montañas llamada Sierra Bermeja que tiene más de 3 mil millones de años y son las más antiguas del Caribe por ser la primeras que emergieron del mar. Este lugar tiene una energía indescriptible ya una parte se encuentra en la zona denominada la Ruta 303 extraterrestre. También podrás apreciar el área de las primeras salinas de Cabo Rojo que se produjeron con un asentamiento español en el año 1511. Esta área se distingue por la visita y anidaje en la época de invierno de aves migratorias del norte de Estados Unidos.

Además de la flora y fauna del lugar, podrás observar la crianza de hermosos caballos que se ha prolongado por más de 60 años y reconocida en todo Puerto Rico. La Hacienda Paraíso se encuentra localizada a 10 minutos del poblado de La Parguera en Lajas y cerca de una de las playas más hermosas: Playa Sucia en el faro de Cabo Rojo. Laying between mountains and valleys with a view of the Caribbean Sea you can nd Hacienda Paraiso (Paradise Hacienda) in Cabo Rojo. It's an excellent place to enjoy with family and friends and to have a great gastronomic experience of Puerto Rican food as you also delight your eyes with the spectacular landscape. During a horseback ride, that happens on the 700 cuerdas of the hacienda and lies right beside the Parguera canals, you will travel back in time while learning about the haciendas history. Accompanied by our guide, you will see the chain of mountains called Sierra Bermeja that is more than 3 billion years old and are the oldest in the Caribbean as they were the rst to emerge from the sea. This place has a special kind of energy to it that is indescribable and part of it is in a zone called Route 303 an extraterrestrial route. You will also be able to enjoy the rst salt marshes of Cabo Rojo that were established by Spanish settlers in 1511. This areas is distinctive for its visual and breathtaking beauty and because it is nesting place for migrating birds that come down during the norths winter. We also can showcase the breeding of beautiful horses that has been happening for the las 60 years there and is recognized throughout Puerto Rico. Este poblado ha ido evolucionando de forma paulatina de una villa de pescadores a uno de los más frecuentados centros recreativos de Puerto Rico. Las principales actividades de turismo son paseos en bote a los cayos por los canales de mangles, la pesca deportiva de dorado y pargos, buceo, snorqueling, paddle board, kitesurfing, kayaking entre otros. Uno de los principales atractivos es que puedes disfrutar del espectáculo de ver la bioluminiscencia que te ofrecen dos bahías en el área, fenómeno natural único. Además ofrece a sus visitantes una amplia oferta gastronómica y varios artesanos puertorriqueños con una muestra gran de maestría y creatividad en sus obras.
Recientemente el gobierno invirtió en este poblado como parte del plan de revitalización
de frentes marítimos. Este proyecto incluyó la reconstrucción de aceras, plazas, calles, integración de áreas verdes y las mejoras tanto al sistema pluvial como a las conexiones eléctricas. De igual forma, se construyó un tercer piso al Mirador, que ahora podrá ofrecerle al visitante una vista más amplia de los mangles y cayos que caracterizan esta zona. Con esta remodelación, además, los comerciantes cuentan con instalaciones más cómodas para sus establecimientos y los operadores de embarcaciones con mejores espacios.

Discover the NEW Parguera village By Sylmarie González Orengo
Parguera is a costal community located in the Lajas community in the southeastern part of Puerto Rico. It’s name comes from the abundant shing of ”pargos” (red snapper). This village has been gradually changing from being just a shing village to one of the most visited recreational centers of Puerto Rico. Boat tours through the mangrove channels, sport shing of snapper and mahi-mahi, scuba diving and snorkeling, paddle boarding, kitesurng and kayaking are some of the activities you can enjoy here. The main attraction at La Parguera village is the two bioluminicent bays it has, a beautiful and unique natural phenomenon. The village has an extensive gastronomic offerings as well as local artisans who have a wide variety of pieces that show great mastery and creativity in their art.
Recently, the government invested in this area as part of a plan to revitalize the costal fronts. The project included the reconstruction of sidewalks, plazas, streets, the integration of vegetation and improvements to the electrical and drainage infrastructure. They also constructed a third oor to a viewer which now allows the visitor an excellent vantage point to see the mangroves and islets that distinguish this area. Our local merchants were also benetted with this effort. They now have facilities that are more comfortable and the boat operators have better space to work in. Entre curvas y frescas brisas comenzamos nuestro paseo en lo que parece ser un camino infinito a l a s m o n t a ñ a s d e Ya u c o . Rodeados de siembras de café y aires campesinos pasamos por Río Prieto, el barrio más al norte del pueblo y el cual colinda con Maricao, Lares y Adjuntas. Llegamos al sector de Santa Clara, nuestro último punto y donde comienza la adrenalina en esta aventura. En este punto termina la carretera y continuamos sobre un camino de barro rojizo en un vehículo todo terreno para

poder subir las empinadas cuestas. Cuando llegamos, un peculiar letrero dirige a la vereda y nos adentramos entre los árboles. La temperatura comienza a bajar y solo puedes escuchar el río mientras avanzas cuesta abajo con la incógnita de qué te espera en el trayecto. Brincando de piedra en piedra cruzamos el río para continuar la vereda caracterizada por la libertad y la energía de la naturaleza. Es aquí cuando comenzamos apreciar la grandeza y belleza de lo que nos

r o d e a , u n a b u n d a n t e b o s q u e ve r d e armonizado por el cánticos de las aves y guiando el borde de la vereda troncos llenos de diferentes hongos. Hay que caminar con cuidado en la vereda ya que es un poco estrecha y en ciertas partes tienes que apoyarte de los árboles, deslizarte y utilizar la inventiva para lograr tu objetivo: llegar a la cascada. Luego de 40 minutos de caminata se va aclarando el panorama y a lo lejos se escucha y se ve el impresionante Salto de Santa Clara. Se siente relajante apreciar la fuerza con la que el agua cae por el acantilado creando una refrescante nube de agua que cubre el cañón. El agua, tan fría como de nevera, llena una pequeña poza y sigue su camino río abajo. Para culminar nuestra aventura, nos zambullimos para refrescamos por un tiempo y luego descansamos sobre las grandes rocas que bordean el río.

Curves and cool breeze welcome our presence as we hike our way on what seems to be an innite trail towards the mountains of Yauco. Surrounded by coffee plantations and rural air we walk by Prieto River, the most northern point of the municipality which shares its borders with Maricao, Lares and Adjuntas. Finally, we arrive at Santa Clara sector, the point of our hike where our emotional juices start owing because here is where the real adventure begins. The road ends here; we go on over a red colored earth trail in an all-terrain vehicle to be able to go up very steep hills. As this part of the journey ends we are received by a weird sign that points us towards a tree infested trail. Suddenly the temperature drops and the sound of a river is our seemingly only companion as we go downhill with a nagging thought in the form of a question; what awaits us down there? Hopping from rock to rock we cross the river to continue on a path that conveys the feeling of complete liberty. The natural energy of the surrounding forest lls our being. At this point we admire the greatness and beauty that envelops us with an abundant and luscious green shrubbery and trees harmonized by the bird songs that ll the air as we observe different types of mushrooms on fallen tree trunks that border the trail. Walking has to be done carefully for the path is narrow and holding on to branches and leaning on trees becomes necessary to avoid falling as we continue on this slippery part of the walkway towards our goal, The Santa Clara waterfall. After 40 minutes of walking on this part of the trail we notice that the view starts clearing up as the forest thins out and we begin to hear the waterfall. As we get closer and we begin to be able to see the waterfall our eyes are lled with wonder at the impressive view of this landmark. The Santa Clara waterfalls strength is awesome but gives us a sense of relaxation as we let ourselves be immersed in this ambiance lled with dew in the form of a cloud and refrigerator cold water giving us a refreshing welcome from our long walk. The high point of this day was jumping into the cool pool that is at the base of the waterfall and then rest on the big boulders that surround the river bed.

n algún momento de nuestra vida deseamos explorar el mar como peces. Para los amantes a la naturaleza, deportes extremos y aventureros ahora en Puerto Rico llego el Seabob. Un nuevo juguete que te hará sentir como todo un delfín. Seabob es un "Luxury Water Toy" de fabricación Alemana. Es un propulsor personal que permite tener una experiencia acuática única, tanto en superficie como bajo el agua. Esta nueva experiencia podrás disfrutarla en el área este de Puerto Rico, en esta ocasión hice las pruebas en Culebra en donde con tan solo una careta, snokel y una cámara de agua realice una de las mejores experiencias en el mar. El operar el mismo es bien fácil y con solo presionar un botón puedes alcanzar y controlar las diferentes velocidades. Una de las ventajas es que puedes cubrir mayores distancias y así poder apreciar las maravillas de la vida bajo el mar que solo haciendo snokel.

Exploring Seabob in Puerto Rico Por Robert Moreno Sometimes we all have a moment where we wish we could explore the undersea world like sh do. Nature lovers, those who practice extreme sports and adventurers will be happy to know that now we have Seabob in Puerto Rico. Seabob is a high performance water toy that will make you feel like a dolphin. This fabulous new toy is manufactured in Germany and it is a personal propel device that allows you to have a unique water experience, on and under water. This new experience can be enjoyed on the eastern side of Puerto Rico and for this article, we tested the Seabob at Culebra. Using a mask, snorkel and a camera I had the seaborne experience of a lifetime . Operating this device is easy and adjusting different speeds just requires pressing a button. The main advantage when using the Seabob is that you can see a lot more of the underwater beauty that with just snorkeling. The Seabob can go as deep as 120 feet and boasts an electrical motor that has 0 emissions making it 100% ecofriendly. It can take upto to 16mph on the surface and 14mph underwater. Al llegar comienzas a sentir el cambio de ambiente, rodeado de montañas. En el camino hacia la entrada de la hacienda hay muchas frutas que puedes coger desde el auto y disfrutarlas mientras llegas. Este lugar recibe ese nombre por la gran cantidad de pomarrosas que crecen en sus alrededores. La pomarrosa es una de las frutas con mayores propiedades nutricionales, pero en Ponce este nombre lo lleva esta interesante Hacienda Cafetalera. Sin lugar a dudas, una de las bebidas preferidas por los puertorriqueños es el café. Esta deliciosa bebida puede ser considerada un elixir en el estilo de vida de muchas personas. A mí me encanta ese sabor particular y su rico a r o m a . E s precisamente esta experiencia la que puedes disfrutar en la Hacienda, desde
ver las fincas de siembra, área de beneficiado, tueste molido del café con una espectacular vista panorámica. El café que se cosecha es completamente trabajado por la mano del hombre por lo que se dice es artesanal. Además del café, en Hacienda Pomarrosa se cosechan toronjas, naranjas, plátanos, guineos y otros frutos. Además del recorrido del café, la hacienda cuenta con un nuevo proyecto Eco-Lodge en los predios en donde pueden hospedarse y vivir una experiencia mágica en todos los aspectos. Este proyecto tiene cabañas para que disfrutes de la esencia de estar en una casa de campo. El mismo dueño de la Pomarrosa , Kurt Legner, es uno de los guías que explican sobre el origen del café. As soon as you arrive you start feeling the change of ambiance because this place is surrounded by mountains. On the road, as you get close to the entrance to the hacienda, there are many trees bearing different fruits that can be picked and enjoyed as you get closer to your destination. This hacienda gets its name from the fact that great numbers of the fruit pomarrosa (rose apple) grow all around the surrounding land. Pomarrosa fruit is full of nutritional value but this name is also the name of a very interesting coffee hacienda, Hacienda Pomarrosa or as it is known in English, The Golden Roseapple Farm, Inc.

There is no doubt that the most ubiquitous drink in Puerto Rico is coffee. This delicious drink is considered to be an elixir in the lifestyle of many. My love for coffee is for its particular taste and aroma. The Hacienda offers varied experiences, such as a tour through the coffee plantation, roast and milling of the coffee, with the added benet, of a great panoramic view of a beautiful landscape. The harvesting of the coffee is done only by hand which gives it the artesian coffee classication. Hacienda Pomarrosa also harvests grapefruit, oranges, plantians, bananas and other fruits. Pescar es una de las actividades más antiguas que existen. A través de los años, se ha convertido en un deporte practicado por muchas personas. A esta disciplina se le llama pesca deportiva. La pesca deportiva consiste en capturar peces con fines recreativos y no lucrativos. En esta ocasión llegamos a marina de San Juan y el capitán nos dio la bienvenida a esta nueva aventura. Nos montamos en el bote y en el camino pudimos apreciar la Bahía de San Juan desde otra perspectiva. Nuestro destino eran las aguas profundas del Océano Atlántico. Ya en mar abierto, el capitán preparó las cañas y las lanzamos al agua. Mientras esperábamos a que algún pez mordiera el anzuelo, vimos peces voladoras y disfrutamos del sol y las olas. Fishing is one of the oldest activities that exist. After millennia it has become a sport, practiced by many. This is called, sport shing. Sport shing is a form of recreational shing where the primary reward is the challenge of nding and catching the sh rather than the culinary or nancial value of the sh's esh. This time we nd ourselves at the San Juan Marina and the captain welcomes us to this new adventure. We aboard the ship and on our way there we had the chance to admire San Juan Bay's splendor from another point of view. The deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean were awaiting our arrival. When we got to open sea the captain readied the shing rods and we tossed them out. As we waited for the sh to start biting we were able to watch ying sh, enjoy the sun and relax as the waves gently rocked our vessel. Finally, we caught a picua sh, a white marlin and a sawsh. circuito cerrado y con obstáculos. Con la motora se pueden ejecutar saltos arriesgados dependiendo del circuito donde se practique pero el objetivo es el mismo: llegar primero a la meta.
Sin duda es un deporte en el cual la adrenalina se siente en todo su apogeo. Una vez montas la motora comienzas a sentir esa corriente de emoción en todo tu cuerpo. Combinas la velocidad con la destreza para así superar los obstáculos de la carrera. Es importante utilizar todos los equipos de seguridad y contar con la experiencia necesaria para manejar la motora.
Aquí tenemos varios lugares donde se puede practicar de manera segura y responsable. Este es un deporte en el que se puede comenzar su formación desde niño con la práctica y medidas de seguridad necesarias. En el pueblo de Juncos hay una pista en la cual se puede practicar el deporte de manera segura y también realizan competencias en diferentes categorías desde los ocho años. II Motocross is an extreme sport that has always enjoyed great acceptance in Puerto Rico. It requires a closed circuit and obstacles as part of its execution. Risky jumps are done with the motorcycle and its difculty depends on the circuit were these amazing people ride, the objective, in the end, is the same, to be the rst one to cross the nish line. There is no doubt that it is a sport that makes you pump adrenaline at full blast. Once you get on the bike you start feeling the rush of emotion inundating your body. Speed is combined with skill to overcome all obstacles in the race. Security equipment becomes of paramount importance as well as the experience to manage the ride as safely as possible. Durante cinco años muchas personas han disfrutado de Toro Verde. Yo nunca lo había visitado ya que no tenía el peso adecuado para montarme en "La Bestia". Practicar zipline no es algo nuevo para mi. Pero la experiencia en Toro Verde fue algo increíble.
Para llegar al zipline de "La Bestia", que es uno de los más largos en el mundo, tienes que pasar antes por ocho ziplines. Los primeros cuatro tenían una vista espectacular y fueron bastante rápidos. Sin embargo, el séptimo zipline, que ya era un poco más largo, tienes que adoptar una posición diferente para llegar al final.

Al pasar el octavo zipline, nos recogió una guagua para llevarnos hasta un camino que nos llevaba hasta "La Bestia". Estaba un poco ansiosa. Al llegar al lugar, fui la primera en lanzarme a la aventura de recorrer "La Bestia". Cuando me tiré sentí un montón de adrenalina y no sabía hacía donde mirar porque la vista es hermosa. Quería verlo todo mientras tienes esa sensación de que vas volando. Al final del día me sentía muy satisfecha y contenta porque tuve la experiencia de estar en el zipline más alto del mundo y fue aquí, en mi isla, Puerto Rico.

n fin de semana en Río Grande puede estar lleno de aventura. Es un pueblo con múltiples posibilidades y alternativas para pasarla bien. Comenzamos la aventura viendo el amanecer muy temprano. Ese día nuestro destino era El Yunque. Este es el único bosque tropical lluvioso en el sistema forestal de Estados Unidos. Al comenzar la caminata a través de una vereda rodeada de vegetación pudimos apreciar hongos rojos y anaranjados, helechos de hasta 30 pies de alto, palmas de sierra, palo colorado y diferentes especies de aves y lagartijos. Luego de caminar por 45 minutos aproximadamente llegamos a la Torre de Mt. Bri on que tiene 3,075 pies de altura y nombra en honor a un británico que realizó múltiples trabajos allí. Desde la torre hay una vista impresionante de Puerto Rico.
También paseamos en kayak por el río Mameyes. Un recorrido tranquilo río abajo en contacto con la naturaleza y los sonidos que produce. Al terminar de kayakear, nos montamos en los Jeeps 4x4 y nos fuimos de paseo hacia el Corredor Ecológico del Este a disfrutar del ecosistema y los encantos que posee.

A weekend at Rio Grande can be full of adventure. It's a town that presents multiple possibilities to have a great time. We started by watching a beautiful sunrise with a destination in mind, El Yunque. El Yunque place is the only tropical rainforest within the United States forest system. As we began our hike through a vegetation ď€ lled trail we noticed red and orange mushrooms, 30 foot tall fern trees, Sierra Palms, Palo Colorado trees as well as different species of lizards and birds. We arrived at the Mt. Britton Tower after about 45 minutes into the hike. This place is at 3,075 feet high and its name is in honor of a British person that worked there. The top of the tower offers a breathtaking view of Puerto Rico. We enjoyed a kayak ride on the Mameyes River while enjoying the relaxing sounds and an intimate contact with nature. At the end of the ride, we hopped on some 4x4 Jeeps and we made our way towards the Northeast Ecological Corridor taking in the ecosystem and its charms.
