¡GRACIAS! Un año de sueños realizado. El poder recibir correos electrónicos y comentarios sobre lo mucho que han aprendido de Puerto Rico me llena de satisfacción. No ha sido fácil….Pero lo fácil no es retante. El educar y promover nuestro país de una forma responsable y con conciencia ambiental es una responsabilidad. Vamos a disfrutar de nuestros recursos, conservándolos y promoviéndolos responsablemente. Como puertorriqueños valoramos y como turistas admiramos lo que este país sin igual promueve al mundo. No tengo palabras para agradecer toda la ayuda de mi hermana y amiga Maylene Pérez en este proyecto que comenzó como una idea loca, un sueño sin definir que hoy es un medio de comunicación para el Mundo. Las Salinas: naturaleza y aventura

abo Rojo es reconocido por muchos por sus extraordinarias playas y por su peculiar poblado de Boquerón. Pero, ¿conoces el valor natural que este municipio ofrece mediante el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre? Dicho refugio es un peculiar paraíso de naturaleza y aventura en el área oeste. Allí puedes disfrutar de las espectaculares vistas, las que hacen que el paseo se convierta en uno de aprendizaje y relajación total ya sea caminando o en bicicleta. Además, puedes avistar aves endémicas, residentes y migratorias. De hecho, habitan 12 de las 16 especies de aves endémicas que existen en Puerto Rico. En 1999, lo que se le conoce como “Las Salinas de Cabo Rojo” pasaron a ser parte de este Refugio Nacional gracias a esfuerzos comunitarios e interagenciales que reconocieron el gran valor ecológico e histórico que poseen las mismas. Puedes encontrar más información en el Centro Interpretativo las Salinas de Cabo Rojo “Efrén Pérez Rivera” y su horario es de Jueves a Sábado de 8:30 a.m. a 4:30 p.m. - Domingo y días feriados de 9:30 a.m. a 5:30 p.m.

abo Rojo is widely recognized for its outstanding beaches and its unique town of Boqueron. But do you know the natural value that this town offers through the National Wildlife Refuge?
This refuge is a unique paradise of nature and adventure in the western region. There you can enjoy the spectacular views that make the ride become a learning and relaxing one, whether walking or cycling. Also, you can watch endemic, resident and migratory birds. In fact, it’s the home of 12 of the 16 endemic bird species that exist in Puerto Rico.
In 1999, what is known as “Las Salinas de Cabo Rojo” became part of the Refuge through community and interagency efforts that recognized the ecological and historical value it has. You can find more information in the Salinas Interpretive Center “Efrén Pérez Rivera” of Cabo Rojo opened from Thursdays to Saturdays, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and Sundays and holidays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 pm

El Servicio Federal de Pesca y Vida Silvestre (USFWS por sus siglas en inglés) inauguró recientemente el nuevo Centro de Visitantes y Oficinas Centrales del Servicio Ecológico y los Refugios Nacionales de Vida Silvestre del Caribe en Cabo Rojo, localizado en la Carr. 301 km 5.1 Barrio Corozo, de camino a la playa El Combate. Este nuevo centro pretende servir como destino turístico para proveer a sus visitantes una experiencia única a través de sus exhibiciones y documentales sobre la protección y conservación de los recursos naturales. La exhibición enfatizará los esfuerzos y compromiso de la agencia para la protección de los recursos naturales como patrimonio natural y legado para las próximas
New Visitors Center The Federal Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS for its acronym in English) recently opened a new Visitors Center and the Headquarters of the Ecological Service and National Wildlife Refuges in the Caribbean in Cabo Rojo, located on Rt. 301 km 5.1 Corozo neighborhood, heading the Combate beach. This new
center aims to serve as a tourism destination to provide visitors a unique experience through its exhibits and documentaries on the protection and conservation of natural resources. The exhibition will emphasize the efforts and commitment of the agency to protect natural resources and natural heritage legacy for future generations. Visiting hours to the new Center are Monday through Saturday from 9am4pm. Admission is free. The mission of the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish,

ara muchos, el charco, salto, cascada o chorro Doña Juana queda en Villalba mientras que para muchos otros queda en Orocovis. Lo que sí doy fe, es que es un ensueño de naturaleza que te hace sentir en una escapada del mundo real y te sumerge en la calma y la tranquilidad. Sus fabulosos sonidos combinan la fauna, la caída del agua y el movimiento de las hojas de los árboles cercanos.
Definitivamente, una experiencia más relajante que pagar una hora en el spa. Esta inmensa cascada de más de 100 pies de altura, se alza entre las verdes montañas, testigos legendarias de su esplendor. Si tiene calor o sólo quiere darse una escapadita al tiempo para hacer turismo interno, este es el lugar indicado. Puede darse un chapuzón o simplemente admirar la belleza que nos regala esta magnífica expresión de la naturaleza. Es un destino ideal para los amantes de la naturaleza y la aventura. Y si disfrutas también del arte fotográfico, este es uno de esos paisajes que no debería faltar en tu álbum. Así que anímate a conocer a Doña Juana y déjanos saber dónde queda.

or many, t’s the pool, jump, waterfall or Juana stream; for some it’s at Villalba while for many others it’s in Orocovis. What I attest is that it is a nature dream that makes you feel in a real-world escape into calm and tranquility. It’s fabulous sounds combine wildlife, waterfall and the movement of leaves from nearby trees. Definitely a more relaxing experience than a day at the “spa”. This huge waterfall over 100 feet high stands between the green mountains, witness’s legendary splendor. If you are hot or just want to getaway for some internal tourism, this is the right place. You can take a dip or simply admire the beauty that this wonderful expression of nature gives us. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure. And if you also enjoy the art of photography, this is one of those landscapes that must be included in your album. So go ahead and get to know Doña Joanna and let us know where it is.

S
iempre me ha llamado la atención el poder hacer descenso por cuerdas, mejor conocido como “rappelling”. En la búsqueda de lugares para practicar y poder experimentar este deporte visité el Parque de Toro Verde, situado en el Municipio de Orocovis. Allí cuentan con una ruta de descenso de cuerda para personas no experimentadas. La misma te hace sentir bastante seguro para una primera experiencia además, que cuentas con la compañía de experimentados empleados. El nombre de la ruta es “Sal Si Puedes”, bien merecido el nombre por demás. Ya que para llegar a la roca donde se practica el descenso en cuerda tienes que pasar por dos tiroleanos o “ziplines”. Aquí es que la adrenalina comienza a subir y la aventura se convierte en la mayor diversión. Una vez llegas a la punta de la piedra, la altura es impresionante y la vista al río espectacular. Ahí comienzas el descenso de aproximadamente 164 pies de altura. Al llegar abajo se comienza a tener una pequeña muestra de escalada para llegar al tiroleano que culmina la maravillosa experiencia que te deja con las ganas de seguir y hacerlo nuevamente. Además, puedes disfrutar de todas las demás rutas que este parque ofrece. Se recomienda realizar reservaciones antes. Luego de la aventura te exhorto a continuar descubriendo los atractivos de los pueblos del centro de la Isla.

Rappelling in “Sal si puedes” By Juan C. Irizarry
I
was always struck by the power to decline by ropes, better known as “rappelling”. In search of places to practice and to experience the sport I visited Toro Verde Park, located in the Municipality of Orocovis. They have a rope descent path for unskilled persons. It makes you feel quite safe for a first time experience in addition to having experienced employees. The path’s name is “Go If You Can”, a well-deserved name. This because to get to the rock where the rope descent is practiced you have to go
through two tiroleanos or “ziplines”. Here is where the adrenaline begins to rise and the adventure becomes more fun. Once you get to the top of the stone, the height is impressive and the river view is spectacular. Here the approximately 164 feet descent begins. When you reach the bottom you begin to have a small sample of climbing in order to reach the culminating tiroleano where the wonderful experience ends leaving you wanting to go on and do it again. You can also enjoy all the other routes the park offers; reservation before hand is recommended. After the adventure, I urge you to continue discovering the attractions the inner center of the island offers.

ho says the search for treasure (Treasure Hunts) is only for children, well they are wrong! Thanks to Geocaching many families around the world share the experience of “treasure hunting”. During mid 2000, the adventurer Dave Ulmer hid a container near a river in the state of Oregon and then posted online the coordinates of GPS (Global Positioning System, for its acronym in English) of the hideout. This in order to determine how long it would
take someone to find it. To his surprise, it only took 3 days for someone to find and share their experience. Geocaching is a worldwide game in which you only need a GPS device and Internet connection in order to enter geocaching.com, where you create a user account to access a number of coordinates. The main idea of this game is to find hidden containers called “geocaches” or “caches” in remote and / or tourism areas, to then share the experience (either written and / or by photos) with other practitioners which we call “geocachers”. In Puerto Rico, the 1st geocache was hidden at the Puerto Rican
Jíbaro Monument in Cayey in 2002. At present, we have an estimate of over 750 hideouts and the number continues to grow as about 3 are hidden on a daily basis. So there is Geocaching for a while! As globally there are over 5 million practitioners. This game is fun and provokes to bring out the adventurer that exists

within each of us. In addition, it’s a good reason to go out with friends and family to visit unusual places and landscapes. Knowing the beauty of the Island camping

ar from the hustle and bustle, you can discover the beauty of nature; you find true friendships in an environment where everyone is at the same level and unpretentious. When camping take everything you need to survive in your backpack ... Hmmm ... do you dare? During the walks you breathe fresh air, discover flowers you’ve never seen, birds with unimaginable colors and hear sounds that bathe your senses with peace. At night, sleep with your heart close to the ground, and if you thought that there are no longer fireflies ... you will see plenty! In the clear cold nights, hot chocolate accompanies you while looking at the stars that appear so close you can almost touch. Mornings are quiet and the smell of coffee ... floods the space. No need to carry much, but do leave many things behind. You will realize that you do not need them! Do not leave anything on site and do not damage anything, protect the environment with “teeth and nails.” We can assure you one thing, the experience will be so personal and rich, … you will be back. We are close, take the step and meet the new Frontier Adventure Campers Association of Puerto Rico, Inc. (ADAPRI, Spanish acronym). It was founded in 1979 with the purpose of promoting backpack camping with low ecological impact, a natural and active lifestyle in Puerto Rico and in other places around the world. ADAPRI encourages contact with nature, which is hard to find in the modern lifestyle. In addition, they educate about the importance of protecting the environment and natural resources. To participate in camps you should have a healthy physical
condition; although in occasions we camp in places accessible to the elderly and children having the opportunity to participate with the rest of the family. Luego de un evento de lluvia NO se recomienda hacer contacto con ningún cuerpo de agua hasta pasadas las primeras 24 horas ya que los focos de infecciones se hacen más evidentes durante ese periodo. Al exponerse en contacto directo con aguas contaminadas o que exceden los límites de bacterias de enterococos o coliformes fecales se puede sufrir de infecciones en la piel, ojos, nariz, garganta y enfermedades gastrointestinales. En caso de contaminación crítica puede causar fiebre tifoide.

onocido a nivel mundial como “paragliding”, el parapente es clasificado como un deporte extremo que implica el ir en busca de altas montañas, colinas o barrancos para dejarse llevar por
paragliding en Puerto Rico:
las corrientes de viento con el fin de descender hasta alcanzar un valle. El recorrido puede durar desde 20 minutos hasta un par de horas, todo depende de las corrientes del viento y del peritaje del piloto. Desde hace dos años, Puerto Rico cuenta con personal capacitado que

brinda esta inolvidable y excitante aventura. Sólo necesitas una breve instrucción del piloto y podrás salir a volar con seguridad. El parapente es manejado por un piloto certificado quien te acompaña y se encarga del vuelo para que así puedas disfrutar de la sensación y apreciar el paisaje al 100%.
Para la realización de esta aventura, debes llegar hasta las montañas de Morovis, municipio donde se te olvida todo por las bellezas observables. El vuelo tiene una altura inicial de 1,600 pies. La vista es una escalofriante y las aves se convierten en el mejor aliado, otorgándote seguridad y
compartiendo su entorno. Este deporte depende de las condiciones meteorológicas y no conlleva ningún tipo de contaminación auditiva, ni de ninguna otra índole. Para esta modalidad pueden estar hasta 50 personas volando o más, ya que el espacio es infinito.

P
aragliding is classified as an extreme sport that involves going in search of high mountains, hills and ravines to be carried away by wind currents to reach down to a valley. The tour can last from 20 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on wind currents and the expertise of the pilot. For two years, Puerto Rico has trained personnel that can provide this unforgettable and exciting adventure. You only need a brief explanation of the pilot and you could
fly safely. A certified pilot handles the paragliding, accompanies you and takes care of the flight so you can enjoy and feel the sensation of the view a 100%. To accomplish this adventure, you need to reach the mountains of Morovis, municipality where you forget everything while observing all it’s beauties. The flight has an initial height of 1,600 feet. The view is chilling and birds become your best partner, giving you security and sharing its environment. This sport is dependent on weather conditions and does not involve any noise pollution, or of any other kind. In this modality, 50 people or more can fly at the same time, as space is infinite.

Para que no volvieran a sacar el agua y mantener la fauna y flora que se había desarrollado, las comunidades aledañas se unieron en pro de su conservación. Así se recuperó este extraordinario recurso natural que hasta el presente es la primera Reserva Natural para Ecoturismo de Puerto Rico. Entre las actividades que se pueden realizar en la reserva son; pesca recreativa, observación de aves, caminatas por las veredas interpretativas, recorrido en kayak, uso de botes de pedales por las lagunas, recorridos en bicicleta y campamentos (permitidos con previa autorización del DRNA), entre otras. Además, cuenta con amplios gazebos para poder disfrutar de un excelente pasadía. Vivir la experiencia de recorrer sus veredas con uno de los guías es mágico, te transportan a la historia y aprendes de la diversidad de especies que allí habitan. A
s taken from a story, the Humacao Nature Reserve is just that. For 30 years, this beautiful natural jewel has gone through several changes. Sugar cane was grown, whose grounds were kept dry by a system of levees, canals
and pumps to draw water. Some of these remnants are still observed along the route leading to the beach. In 1979, Hurricane David and Frederick caused the levees to brake
and the waters returned to occupy their rightful natural space, forming once again the lagoons that once were dried. To not allow the waters dry out and maintain the wildlife that had developed, the surrounding communities joined in support of it’s conservation. Thus this extraordinary natural resource was recovered and to date is the first Ecotourism Nature Reserve in Puerto Rico. Among the activities that can be enjoyed in the reserve are: fishing, bird watching, walks through the

interpretive trails, kayak tours, paddle boats in the lagoons, biking and camping (allowed with prior approval of the DNER), among others. It also has large gazebos to enjoy great picnics. To experience the paths with one of the guides is magical; they transport you back into history and you learn about the diverse species that live there. You can also enjoy a cup of fresh brewed coffee at the shop or buy beautiful souvenirs made by local artisans. The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) administers the reserve in collaboration with INECOH (Humacao Community Ecotourism Initiative) who is a group of entrepreneurs whom together focus on economic development. You can visit the Reserve from Wednesday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, or can call (787) 852-6058.

e imaginan el poder ir de noche en busca de murciélagos… Pocos lo harían, esto debido a que cuando pensamos en estos enigmáticos mamíferos pensamos rápidamente en cosas negativas: que son feos, que se enredan en el pelo o que chupan sangre y nos convertimos en vampiros. Resultado; nada de eso es cierto. Los murciélagos deben ser dignos de admiración pues pilotean ágilmente en la oscuridad usando la ecolocalización mientras que su apariencia reta nuestros cánones estéticos y sus actividades proveen muchos e importantes beneficios a nuestros ecosistemas. La oportunidad de poder aprender sobre murciélagos la ofrece el Centro
Ambiental Santa Ana (CASA) mediante el Proyecto NOCTILIO. Este proyecto, tiene el propósito de monitorear, estudiar y educar sobre el murciélago
pescador (Noctiliole porinus) con el fin de valorar la necesidad de proteger sus hábitats. Así como su posible relación de vuelo entre el Estuario de la Bahía
de San Juan y el Bosque. Entre las tareas de los voluntarios ambientales se encuentran: el montar y desmontar las redes de neblina para la captura de los murciélagos, la toma de datos y la colocación de collares de monitoreo a cada murciélago. El Centro Ambiental Santa Ana (CASA) es administrado por la Sociedad de Historia Natural de Puerto Rico y localizado en el Parque Nacional Julio E. Monagas de Bayamón. Desde allí realizan actividades como: recorridos interpretativos diurnos y nocturnos por el bosque,

magine being able to go at night in search of bats ... Few would do this because when we think of these enigmatic mammals we quickly think in negative things, that they are ugly, get tangled in the hair or suck
blood and become vampires. Reality is; none of that is true. Bats should be worthy of admiration for piloting swiftly in the dark using echolocation while they challenge our aesthetic and because its activities provide many important benefits to our ecosystems. The opportunity to learn about bats is provided by the Santa Ana Environmental Center (CASA, for it’s Spanish acronym) through the NOCTILIO Project. This project aims
to monitor, study and educate on the Fisherman Bat (Noctiliole porinus) to evaluate the need to protect their habitats, in addition to establish the flight relationship between the San Juan Bay Estuary and the Forest. Among the tasks of the environmental volunteers are: the assembly and disassembly of mist nets used to catch bats, data collection and placement of monitoring collars to each bat. ...... ue día de playa en la Parguera! Mi gran aventura en el agua fue increíble haciendo lo que llaman “wakeboarding”. Es un deporte acuático donde estas en una tabla encima del agua y una lancha te arrastra con un
cable. Busqué información y este deporte fue creado por medio de una combinación de esquí, esquí acuático y el snowboard. Lo mejor es que se puede hacer aquí en Puerto Rico. Cuando empezaron a enseñarme, me caí dos o tres veces pero luego personal de Parguera Water Sports me ayudaron a que no me diera miedo. Yo creo que las

primeras veces me caía del miedo pero me dieron un “break” de 20 minutos para relajarme. Mi padrastro lo intentó y lo hizo a la primera y por la vergüenza me tiré al agua y ¿adivinen qué?, al minuto estaba DISFRUTANDO UN MONTÓN!!! Es una aventura que tienes que vivir la experiencia para saber lo que se siente y lo emocionante que es.

W
hat a day at the beach in La Parguera!. My great adventure on the water was amazing doing what they call «waterboarding» which is a water sport where you are on a board above the water and a boat pulls you along with a cable. I did some research and found out the sport was created through a combination of Ski, waters Ski and Snowboarding. The best thing is that you can practice it here in Puerto Rico. When they began to teach me, maybe I fell two or three times but Luijo of Parguera Water Sports helped me leave my fear behind. I think I fell of fear but I got a 20-minute «break» to relax. My stepfather tried and made it from the first; out of shame I jumped into the water and guess what.. in a minute I was ENJOYING A LOT! It›s an adventure you have to live to know what it feels like and how exciting it is.

La filosofía de la escuela es promover el deporte y poder desarrollar atletas que representen la Isla en campeonatos nacionales e internacionales. BODYBOARDING Everyone should learn from SURFING AND BODYBOARDING
W
e live on an island that has nothing to envy any other, with spectular weather all year round and above all with waves around it. Practicing the sport of surfing and bodyboarding should be mandatory for all our young people. In Puerto Rico there are several schools of this sport. One is the ATLANTIC SURF & BODYBOARDING SCHOOL, which is dedicated to teach these practices to children at different levels: beginner, intermediate and expert. It is also a school that promotes environmental conservation by teaching sound environmental practices such as potting, protection of species like the leatherback and conservation of our resources. The school’s philosophy is to promote the sport and to develop athletes who can represent the island in national and international championships. The school is located on “Caza y Pesca” beach in the Islote neighborhood of the Arecibo municipality, every Saturday from 9:00 am. The school will offer summer camps this summer. Bocatta Bistro: Historia & Sabor en Guayama Por Sylmarie González Orengo

a el casco urbano de la ciudad Bruja en Guayama cuenta con un lugar idóneo para deleitar el paladar. Se trata de un nuevo concepto que fusiona sabores típicos con cocina internacional. Este innovador establecimiento que lleva como nombre, Bocatta Bistro, está ubicado en un edificio histórico que data del 1840. Este edificio fue la Antigua Farmacia Central de Guayama. Los estantes que se utilizaban para ubicar los medicamentos fueron conservados y hoy día conforman su peculiar barra. Del piso se resalta las losetas españolas del siglo pasado. El ambiente y las obras de Gustavo Serra hacen de este lugar uno sumamente acogedor. Algunos de los aperitivos que podemos deleitar lo son: las arepas de coco rellenas de chorizo y una mezcla de quesos servida con una salsa de guayaba, montaditos en tostón de plátano y el ceviche. Los platos principales abarcan una gran variedad, desde la pechuga rellena de maduros envuelta en tocineta y bañada en salsa blanca hasta el mar y campo que es el churrasco con brochetas de camarones. Estos platos pueden acompañarse con la sabrosa sangría de la casa o el trago de su preferencia. Además, cuentan con un menú para niños así como para vegetarianos. Ahhh y no te sorprendas si el día que decides aventurar en Bocatta te encuentras con Tommy Torres y Karla Monroig ya que son familiares de los dueños.

ow, in the urban city of Guayama, better known as the “Witch City”, there’s a place that will delight the palate. This is a new concept that combines traditional flavors with international cuisine. This innovative facility that bears the name, Bocatta Bistro is located in a historic building dating from 1840. This building was the former Central Pharmacy of Guayama. The shelves that were used to locate drugs were preserved and now form its peculiar bar. The Spanish floor tiles are from the past century, the environment and the art works of Gustavo Serra makes this a very welcoming place. Some of the appetizers that you can enjoy are: coconut “arepas” (ground corn dough or cooked flour) stuffed with sausage and a blend of cheeses served with guava sauce, mounted bananas pieces and “ceviche” (seafood salad marinated with lime juice). Main courses include a wide variety, from stuffed chicken breast wrapped with bacon and bathed in white sauce, to sea and land, which is skirt steak with shrimp skewers. The delicious house sangria or the drink of your choice can accompany these dishes. They also have children’s menu as well as vegetarian menu. Ah! and don’t be surprised if the day you decide to venture into Bocatta you meet Tommy Torres and Karla Monroig because they are relatives of the owners.
