Understanding Change It’s an old cliché but it fits well all too often, “embrace change.” Change can be challenging, yet it is an essential ingredient of life. It can pop up at the most unexpected time, and rattle even the most headstrong of people. While there’s no way to truly prepare ourselves for the unexpected, we can learn to embrace it by deliberately putting ourselves outside our zones and getting comfortable with the initially uncomfortable.

One of the major challenges of change is resistance. Humans are creatures of habit. We build our lives on patterns of thought, emotions and behaviour. Unfortunately for many people these patterns lead to complacency, which impedes growth. We have conformed to a certain way of life that we immediately turn tables and defy gravity once a change is requiring us to shift gears.

You might have a story to share about your heart-breaking struggles and life-stopping roadblocks. But considering where you are right now, you have chosen to move on and take big leaps. And that by itself is embracing change in your very own way.

Let’s look into some helpful ways to make sure that we take advantage of these changes and rather not miss out on huge opportunities of growth.

Compromise. Come to terms with the transformation. Find the middle ground and look for a way for you to

make these work. If you’ll just stand there and cling to what you are used to, chances are, you’ll get stuck and even left-out.

Hone Your Attributes. Use these changes to sharpen your skills. Groom yourself in a way that where ever these

changes may bring everyone, you will always be at the top of your game. Focus your energy not on fighting the old but on tailoring yourself to the new.

A

dapt. It doesn’t mean it should happen overnight but set to settle-in. Find your feet in this new ground and work your way to make sure that you’re path towards taking the right steps and the big leaps are still on track.

Nurture The Keepers. Despite these changes, something will be kept the same. Manage this familiarity to your

advantage. You’re a master of that process, system, equipment, etc. Take the lead in introducing the old to the new.

Generate Optimism. Perception does matter. Once you got over your dilemmas, train others to see that the

glass is half-full. Don’t let negativity eat-up your team’s productivity. Let other department see how progressively you have customized your group to the change and this will create ripples of good vibes.

E

ngage. Help the management reach out to every single member of the rank and file to get the bigger and brighter picture of these changes. Be that catalyst that every single company would want on their side.

Since they say it’s the only constant entity in this world, change is certainly unavoidable and uncontrollable. What we can control is how we manage, how we react and how we work through the change process.

HONESTY

We have now reached the last of our 5 core values and as promised on the first issue, we won’t be stopping here. Instead, on succeeding issues, we will go through other ideal employee values everyone should embrace in their daily work routines. For now, let’s try to learn more about HONESTY, particularly its significance in the healthcare industry.

Let’s be honest about being honest – a companywide commitment to honesty at the office is hard and probably even extra challenging when dealing with patients and their families. This requires a great deal of courage and sensitivity to discuss issues that may be uncomfortable. Responsibility for this applies not only among front-liners but even up to the top with the leadership team.

Is it possible to have too much honesty in the workplace? Employees sometimes avoid voicing opinions, frustrations, or general ideas to modify or change company’s operating procedures.

Leaders on the other hand may hesitate to involve his/her employees on certain issues with the fear of getting negative perception on the matter and eventually losing manpower support. Instead, these opinions and ideas may progress through the work environment in a series of conversations with other employees, creating gossip. When this is the case, the problem has no viable outlet to be fixed or solved. In terms of our relationship with patients, healthcare professionals are constantly faced with choices of actions that can be either honest or dishonest. Dishonesty may be selected out of a desire to protect oneself and even others (colleagues or patients). This may violate the trust placed in the employee and may generally undermine the whole facility’s integrity. No matter what your intention may be, dishonesty is never justified. To err and to not set the record straight is dishonest and leads to lack of self-respect, lack of respect to others, lack of trust to patients and coworkers, lack of credibility, patient harm, and worst case, even to lawsuits.

Most of the time, TRUTH gets to be interchanged with HONESTY, hence let us try to learn more about this corporate value through T.R.U.T.H.

hrowaway the Judgment. It is important to give each other the freedom to be honest, even if we don’t agree with each assessment. Judging an opinion will not foster an “Open Door” environment where everyone can express ideas and/or concerns.

Reassure and Clear the Pipes.

At the end of team meetings, conclude with a “clear the pipes section.” This debriefing gives members an opportunity to voice opinions, frustrations, or to just get some things off their chest. It relieves us from the anxiety that may come along with the venting.

Also, it bonds the team itself because we know that we can express ourselves to our colleagues.

Uphold Responsibility. If an employee wants to

voice an opinion, be it good or bad, we need to back it up with facts and substance. Complaining just to whine does not get anyone anywhere. Employees should be prepared to offer solutions to the issues we see. If we can’t help find the solution, then that expression of grievance is just a futile discussion.

alk About Positives and Negatives. At the end of the day, there will always be things that need improvement. But there are so many things that are done well, and that voice should also be heard from employees and leadership. Whether through an e-mail, or staff meeting, level platforms should be provided for both what is working and perhaps what is not working. It’s important to focus on the positive, as well as acknowledge the negative.

Communication is the most important way to foster this honest environment.

Implementation is Key. It is important that we don’t just give people an outlet or a forum to express their opinions, but we actually DO something about these opinions. If employees see that opinions and thoughts matter, and leadership and staff take the steps to improve or implement their ideas, everyone will be empowered. Empowered employees perform above and beyond, and feel a strong sense of loyalty toward the company.

A workplace that values honesty will experience a ripple effect throughout the company. Coworkers will trust each other, employees will view management with less suspicion and patients will return and spread the word about the company's integrity. Beyond doubt, honesty, is still the best policy.

Taking Care Of Dear Heart February is oftentimes attributed as the month of hearts. Probably because in certain parts of the world, Valentine’s day is being celebrated through expressions of love. Here in the UAE, it will be hard not to notice that this season is already here. From elegant mall decorations to polished restaurant arrangements; all of these add up to the romantic ambiance that will surely overwhelm our hearts. And since we’ve already been discussing matters of the heart, American Heart Association would like to take advantage of the theme of this season to advocate a healthy heart.

Be physically active. You can slowly work up to at least 2½ hours (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity (e.g., brisk walking) every week or 1 hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes) of vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity (e.g., jogging, running) or a combination of both every week. Additionally, on 2 or more days a week you need muscle-strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest shoulders, and arms). Children should get at least 60 minutes of activity every day.

You’re never too young— or too old — to take care of your heart.

Preventing heart disease (and all cardiovascular diseases) means making smart choices now that will pay off the rest of your life.

It's never too early or too late to learn the warning signs of a heart attack and stroke. Not everyone experiences sudden numbness with a stroke or severe chest pain with a heart attack. And heart attack symptoms in women can be different than men.

Lack of exercise, a poor diet and other unhealthy habits can take their toll over the years. Anyone at any age can benefit from simple steps to keep their heart healthy during each decade of life.

Here’s how: Choose a healthy eating plan. The food you eat can decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Choose foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium. As part of a healthy diet, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, fiber-rich whole grains, fish, nuts, legumes and seeds and try eating some meals without meat. Select lower fat dairy products and poultry (skinless). Limit sugar-sweetened beverages and red meat. If you choose to eat meat, select the leanest cuts available.

Emirates Healthcare’s Cricket Team Continues Winning Streak Emirates Healthcare’s Cricket Team is starting to make noise as it advances further on the NMC Champions Trophy 2018. The team bagged its second victory this time against probably one of the league’s strongest contender BRS Gladiators (BR Ventures) last January 26, 2018 at Ultimate Sports Academy, Abu Dhabi.

Our very own HR director and team captain, Mr. Hari Das, was very delighted to celebrate this second win, “Hats off to our bowlers who displayed incredible skills on the field. Despite winning the initial toss and putting up a good fight, BRS Gladiators ended up eating our dust as Emirates Healthcare outperformed them on the field. With first-rate batters on board, Mr. Rishad and Mr. Ramesh, we hope to motivate more potentials from our players and hone their strengths to eventually bring the team to the championship.”

Mr. Hari Das further added that upcoming victories will be sweeter if we have everyone join in on the heat of the games and cheer for our team. Schedules will be announced once finalized.

NMC Champions Trophy is an annual Employee Engagement sports event across the group showcasing the crème de la crème in the field of cricket. Over the next couple of months, 28 teams will battle to become the Champion of this series. In order to manage common emergencies every EHG employee should possess basic knowledge of emergency care and the skills necessary for dealing with these situations. People who know basic life support have the skills to take action no matter where they are or when it is required. Although your career may have been the drive for taking these courses, the knowledge that you gain will prepare you to help others whether you are on the job or on your own time. This means that you will be prepared to provide the necessary assistance while at home, in the grocery store, on vacation, or wherever an emergency may arise following local guidelines.

E-MAIL SECURITY THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK Email security isn’t just the email provider or administrator’s responsibility. It’s everybody’s responsibility.

Here is a list of safety tips for all users to help keep spam & malware to an absolute minimum.

• Change your password often.

• Use strong passwords. Never use a password that contains “password” or “letmein” or "easycharacter".

• Use a different password for each of your accounts. If you use the same password for your bank account as you do for your email account, you become much more vulnerable to data theft.

• Don’t open an attachment unless you know who it is from & are expecting it.

• Be cautious about email messages that instruct you to enable macros before downloading Word or Excel attachments.

• Use anti-virus software on your local machine, and make sure it’s kept up-to-date with the latest virus definitions.

• If you receive an attachment from someone you don’t know, don’t open it. Delete it immediately.

• Learn how to recognize phishing 1. Messages that contain threats to shut your account down or Alert etc...

2. Requests for personal information such as passwords or Social Security numbers 3. Words like “Urgent” – false sense of urgency

4. Forged email addresses 5. Poor writing or bad grammar • Hover your mouse over links before you click on them to see if the URL looks legitimate.

• Instead of clicking on links, open a new browser and manually type in the address.

• Don’t give your email address to sites you don’t trust.

• Don’t post your email address to public websites or forums. Spammers often scan these sites for email addresses.

• Don’t click the “Unsubscribe” link in a spam email. It would only let the spammer know your address is legitimate, which could lead to you receiving more spam.

• Understand that reputable businesses will never ask for personal information via email.

• Don’t send personal information in an email message.

• Don’t reply to spam. Be aware that if you reply to a spam email, your reply most-likely will not go back to the original spammer because the FROM header in the spam message will mostlikely be forged.

• Don’t share passwords to any one via email unknown person.

• Be sure to logout from your account once you’ve completed your work.

Emirates Hospital Advances Breast Cancer Care with New Sentimag® Technology

Emirates Hospital, part of Emirates Healthcare and located in Dubai, has become the first healthcare facility in the Middle East to acquire Sentimag®. Sentimag® is an innovative medical device that greatly improves a clinician’s ability to precisely diagnose breast cancer. It also helps the clinician to make an informed decision regarding a patient’s post-operative care. As surgeons want to remove as little tissue as possible during surgery, Sentimag® will allow them to pinpoint the spread of cancer as accurately as possible.

Most treatments for early breast cancer involve a sentinel lymph node biopsy. A sentinel lymph node is defined as the first lymph node to which cancer cells are most likely to spread from the primary tumour. In breast cancer, the sentinel

lymph nodes are located in the armpit area.

The traditional method of carrying out the biopsy on the patient uses radioisotopes. Incorporating Sentimag® in its breast care pathway, Emirates Hospital now offers an effective clinical solution that does not use radioisotopes so that radiation is avoided. This is clearly better for patients.

Sentimag® uses safe magnetic fields to help surgeons locate the important sentinel lymph nodes. This ultrasensitive methodology avoids unnecessary removal of other lymph nodes and minimises health complications for the patient.

Al Reef Medical Centre Opens In Ras Al Khaimah

A specialised dental care facility has been opened in Ras Al Khaimah by the Emirates Healthcare company — a leading global health care provider.

The Al Reef Medical Centre, has been opened as part of expansion plan of the Emirates Healthcare in Ras Al Khaimah.

The new facility was inaugurated by Shaikh Mohammad Bin Kayed Al Qasimi, Chairman of Ras Al Khaimah Department of Economic Development in the presence of Abdul Rahman Al Sheibah, Director of Ras Al Khaimah Department of Economic Development; Engineer Ahmad Al Hammadi, Roads Department Director; and Dr Yasser Eisa Hamad Al Nuaimi, Director General of RAK Medical Zone.
