Withers received a flower bouquet donated by Logan County Extension and a $15 gift certificate donated by Quilts-NCreations. Reserve Champion for the Junior Division was Alexis Gen-

And with the crowds come mounds of trash generated each year at the fair. Members of the Chamrocks 4-H Club voted earlier this year to start efforts to recycle some of that trash. They received

approval from the Fair Board for the project, then visited with Bernadette Marick, a 4-H leader herself, and decided to begin on a small scale. Since most beverages now are sold in plastic bottles, plastic was chosen as a target to begin with. The club purchased cardboard recycle “bins” that will be placed in both the Livestock Barns and in the Event

Center. The bins can be folded and stored for next year if the project is successful. Members and their families have signed up for times during the week to empty the bins, which they are hoping will fill up quickly each day. All the plastic collected will be dumped into special recycling containers. Marick Waste Disposal is pro-

By Sara Waite Editor The tire store located at 1020 W. Main St. in Sterling is under a new name and new ownership since June 1. Great Western Tire, a familyowned business based in Oakley, Kansas, purchased the shop as part of what co-owner Ryan Thompson called “an expansion kick.” The business has been

operating under the Great Western Tire name since the 1970s. Thompson’s father, Curtis, started with the company in 1972 as a service truck driver. In 1987, he purchased the Oakley shop and his sons, Ryan and Curtis James “CJ,” grew up in the business. Ryan went off to school and got an accounting degree, while his brother stayed home to help
