The future of gardening: Information and inspiration (BPT) - Gardening saw record growth in 2020 and experts expect many more people will be digging in the dirt again this spring. From “Victory” vegetable gardens to balcony containers, outdoor gathering spaces and mood-lifting landscapes, gardening is providing an outlet during the pandemic. Research conducted late last year found that 86% of homeowners plan to continue gardening in 2021.

Nearly half of respondents say they’ll be planting more and expanding their garden spaces this spring. With all that expansion and enthusiasm comes the need for inspiration and advice.

Help for beginners One source provides both inspiration and advice, with a goal of helping people feel more successful in their gardening endeavors. The National Garden Bureau was founded in 1920 in the wake of World War I, when an increasing number of suburbanites needed basic backyard gardening instruction.

The nonprofit organization’s mission is to provide education to motivate people to enjoy plants, from indoor houseplants to outdoor gardens.

Try something new How do they do it? One way is with their ‘Year of’ program. Each year the National Garden Bureau selects one annual, one perennial, one bulb crop, one edible and one shrub as their ‘Year of the’ crops.

A look into the future “A big trend we’ve seen in our Future of Gardening survey is all about creating beautiful spaces,” says Blazek. “Planting sunflowers, hibiscus, hyacinth, monarda and other easy-to-grow flowers can help add color and curb appeal, but they also add natural beauty to outdoor gathering spaces, another COVID-19 world trend.”

Controlling Garden Pests

Spray the aphids with a blast of cold water to shake them off your plants or spray the leaves with an aphid insecticide or a combination of liquid dish soap, water, and cayenne pepper.

Grasshoppers tend to eat leaves, but they only eat the flesh that can be found between the veins and stems of the leaf, leaving behind the skeletal remains of the leaf. Grasshoppers can be managed by dusting the leaves of your plants with flour or garlic bulb and water mixture.

Mow your lawn frequently and keep your grass short to rid your yard of these pesky things.

Caterpillars have a taste for vegetable plants, especially leafy green plants. You can tell if caterpillars have visited your garden by the distinctive ragged holes they leave behind in plant leaves.

MENARDS—Summer is here! Whether you’re warming up the grill, planting flowers, or relaxing in the sun, now is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy your yard or garden. However, pesky insects also love to visit your garden in the summer. Not only are they irritating, they can also do some serious damage to your plants.

IDENTIFY THE CULPRITS There are a few different ways to identify the pests that are terrorizing your garden. If you happen to catch them in the act, try to snap a photo and take note of the color, body shape, size, wing shape and number of legs. Using a garden guide book or a web search, you can use these physical descriptions to determine what type of insect is eating your plants.

Another way to identify pests is to examine the damage. Some insects have specific diets and will only target certain plants, leaving behind unique feeding patterns or tunnels.

COMMON GARDEN PESTS Aphids are tiny bugs with a pear-shaped body. They come in a range of colors, including: green, yellow, red, brown, or gray.

Aphids cause damage by sucking the sap out of plants, which can lead to off-colored or curled leaves, stunted plant growth, and a sticky buildup on your plants called honeydew that can lead to sooty mold that attracts ants. Aphids tend to prefer fruits, vegetables, and woody ornamental plants.

Control them by picking them off your plants and relocating to a more convenient location before their eggs can hatch.

Japanese beetles can devastate your garden, swarming a plant until there is nothing left. They love ornamental plants like shrubs, roses, or trees as well as vegetables.

To eliminate them, spray the affected plants with a specialized insecticide. For a chemical-free solution, place a plastic sheet beneath the plant and shake off the beetles and dump them into a bucket of soapy water. Do this in the morning before when beetles are active.

Slugs and snails love to feast on young vegetable seedlings, feeding at night or during cloudy or rainy days making it very difficult to spot them. Look for irregular holes in the center of your plants’ leaves or perfectly round holes in soft fruits or vegetables like tomatoes or strawberries. Use products specifically design to get rid of slugs or place a 2- by 4-inch board in between the rows of your vegetable garden at night. When the sun is high in the sky, the slugs will take shelter beneath the boards.

Using gardening gloves and a bucket filled with soapy water, flip over the boards and collect the slugs.

Spirea and Dogwood are examples of trees that experienced the death of many of their old branches during the winter due to a rapid November temperature change. If you’re noticing a dearth of healthy branches, try cutting them back from the roots.

“They’ll be just fine and look good in probably about three to four weeks.”

Not sure whether you need to prune your trees and shrubs?

“Right now, we’re just starting to see the leaves come out to full size,” explains Fetig. In most cases, if you’re only seeing leaves at the base of a plant, you need to take action. Fetig suggests cutting them back as close to the ground as possible and adding some fertilizer.

Asparagus You should be able to harvest your asparagus right now. Note, though, that if you plant it this season, you’ll have to be patient; it takes three years to harvest it.

Also keep in mind, “Every piece of asparagus you’re eating is the branch that was coming up to start,” says Fetig. “You can’t break all the branches off or you won’t have a plant.” In other words, don’t eat every last bite in your raised bed — no matter how good it tastes.

Strawberries They should be ready to harvest starting in late June. “Most of the strawberry plants that we sell now are ever-bearing, and so they’ll have fruit off and on all summer,” says Fetig.

Fetig suggests putting them in your cereal, squeezing them into a liquid for drinks, making jam, jelly, and pies out of them, or even making mead with them. In addition to their unique flavor, “It’s not something that you see very often in a grocery store,” he says.

Nanking cherries According to Fetig, the shrub they come from is a great choice for novice gardeners. Why? It doesn’t have a lot of insect pests, which makes it easy to care for.

And if you don’t get around to harvesting it, you don’t have to worry about a mess — the birds will take care of it for you, he says. With a sour flavor profile, the Nanking cherry is best for pies.

“Those plants are growing in the same soil for their whole life,” he explains, so it’s important to replenish the soil periodically.

But what’s good for one plant may not be so great for another. For example, a suffering Spirea will usually benefit from a fertilizer that has a little less nitrogen, and a little more phosphorus, says Fetig. For container plants, he says it’s important to choose a fertilizer that releases slowly. Most people will need more than one type of fertilizer to meet the needs of different types of plants.

A majority of dog owners surveyed — 84 percent — say dogfriendly features such as a home with a dog door or living near a dog park are important factors in their moving decisions. In fact, 84 percent said they are willing to spend more for these features.

During the pandemic, many homeowners undertook remodeling projects of all types to enhance their living quarters, while many others picked up roots and moved as a result of shifting family priorities and the ability to work remotely from anywhere.

A smaller segment made the move for the sake of their dogs.

According to a new survey from Rover and Zillow, 24 percent of dog owners in the U.S. have moved into a new home since March 2020, and 62 percent would consider moving to a new home to better accommodate their dog.

“Home became more important than ever during the pandemic, sparking the Great Reshuffling,” Amanda Pendleton, Zillow home trends expert, said in a press release. “As we rethink where and how we want to live, we’re reevaluating what we want and need in a home in this new normal. For many families, that includes considering what’s best for their four-legged family members.”

According to the Rover/Zillow survey, homes with a dog house sold for 3 percent more than expected last year, while homes with a fenced yard or dog run sold a few days faster than similar homes without these features —

June Home Ownership Month! Homeownership Matters NAR’s “Social Benefits of Homeownership and Stable Housing” report reveals that homeowners are happier and healthier. They tend to vote more, volunteer more, and contribute more to their neighborhoods.

This year, with housing inventory shortages at the lowest level in many decades, becoming a homeowner has become more challenging. A few more homes are coming on the market with COVID-19 fears easing, but the outlook is that the record-low supply will continue. In April 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau

reported the homeownership rate in the U.S. is 65.3%. Since 2000, the homeownership rate has been within a few percent points of this rate every year. The National of Association of REATLORS® (NAR) works hard to keep homeownership at a high level.

“Homeownership Matters” has been an overarching theme of the National Association of REALTORS®, but especially during Homeownership Month.

NAR reports that “A number of research studies have shown that homeownership provides social and societal benefits. Not only is home ownership one of the best ways to build long-term wealth, providing resources for a more comfortable retirement, but it also fosters an immeasurable sense of community and stability vital to growing families.”

Why Homeownership Matters Equity Build Up Over time, through both strong and weak economic conditions, the value of a home in most markets across the country has increased. In the U.S., we are blessed with financing, which enables people to buy a home with relatively small down payments and a 30-year amortizing loan.

When increasing home values are combined with a principal loan balance which drops each month, you build equity. This accrual of equity directly contributes to the wealth and financial stability of homeowners.
