BY MARY LYNN BRUNY Thanks to vaccines, soon we’ll once again be socializing in person without masks with fellow homo sapiens.

Thus it’s time to take stock of what bodily mayhem has occurred during the last year of our pandemic isolation. Many of us have become like Tom Hanks in “Cast Away”: furry and feral.

Sure, our animals think we look great. But there are definitely things we should do before we interact with real humans: Start regularly flossing your teeth. No, you have not been doing it daily, maybe not even weekly. Really? You think not? Look at the dust that has collected on your floss container, assuming you can even find it.

Assess your hair style (if you can call it that with a straight face) and color. The “natural look” is easy and inexpensive, but do you want people to question your mental stability each time they encounter you?

That being said, you can probably get away with a lot of erratic behavior if people think you’ve gone off the deep end.

And folks will definitely finally stop requesting so many favors.

For instance your family members will stop asking you to babysit every weekend. Finally you could have time to tour wine country!

Women: Look closely above your lip. Some of you may have a little furry mustache. If so, consider whether you want to

rock this androgynous look or not. Mustaches are in but not all styles work on all people (except, of course, Harry Styles).

Men: Examine the hair sprouting from in and around your ears. If humming birds are trying to nest in it, get out the hedge clippers and chop back that thatch. If your nose whistles when you exhale, you probably need to clear that thicket as well.

And what about your eyebrows?

Do they look like crazy caterpillars that have been exposed to radiation? Rein those puppies in, sir.

Women: Put on a bra. (It’s that thing in the second drawer down on the left side of your dresser.) Wedge into that contraption and make an assessment. Either you will buy back into society’s historic and restrictive norm of female beauty or you will continue to go free range. If the look of your frontal area is not to your liking but you don’t want to go back to those constrictive rib squeezers, find your old stretched-out sports bra.

You know, the one that used to be bright white but now is dull grey. Also: Know there are lots of quarantine-inspired new styles out there that cater to our newfound sense of comfort.

Take off your sweatpants and try on your actual clothes.

(You may need to fortify yourself before this endeavor with whatever substance does the job.)

Get a large storage box and mark it with the label: “Oh, hell no.”

Put any items in the box that don’t fit or are uncomfortable.

(Strangling ties? Painful high heals? Why did we ever wear these?) Put this box in the back of the attic or a very dark corner of your basement. Afterwards, say ten positive self-affirmations and burn a sage stick.

After the above exercise you may need to purchase a few new items of clothing. Rest assured clothing manufacturers are at the ready with stylish loose-fitting tops and elastic and drawstringwaist bottoms, perfect for post-pandemic casual socializing with fellow humanoids. Now we just have to remember how to converse in person.

Greeley’s affordability attracts homebuyers near and far

By Luanne Kadlub, At Home Colorado After all these years, Greeley is no longer the ugly stepsister of northern Colorado communities where people complain about certain odors and a lack of anything to do so why would anyone want to live here?

Surprise! Greeley is now one of the most sought-after places to buy a home and settle in for the long haul because unlike Cinderella, the city won’t go back to what it was after midnight.

What’s changed? Why are more potential homebuyers — even millennials — looking to buy a home in Greeley?

Three factors are at work, according to local Realtors: • Affordability

• Ability to work from anywhere • A revitalized city center and diverse cultural offerings Let’s start with the primary reason Greeley is experiencing an influx of homebuyers from near and far: The ability (for now anyway) to purchase a home for close to $100,000 less than just about anywhere else in northern Colorado.

Buying in Greeley is a nobrainer when the median price of a home here hovers around $350,000, while the median price in Fort Collins is $495,000, $430,000 in Loveland-Berthoud, $639,000 in Estes Park and $1.5 million in Boulder. Yikes!

But what about the smaller communities, like Windsor, Severance, Timnath and Eaton?

Good question. According to Realtor.com, Windsor’s median price is $459,900 while Severance is $431,000, Timnath comes in at $515,000, Johnstown is $419,000, and Eaton is just slightly higher than Greeley at $373,000.

Greeley’s looking pretty good, right?

Couple the affordability factor with the pandemic-friendly ability to work from anywhere and you have lots of metro folks and out-of-staters looking at Greeley as a desirable place to purchase a home, according to Andrew Rottner, a Redfin senior agent serving the northern Front Range.

“After COVID, many people don’t need to be as close to a Denver metro office as before.

They’re looking to relocate where

there is less congestion,” he said.

Bev West, broker/owner of West Realty/Metro Brokers, noted that homebuyers now include younger families, who before would eschew the city, and those moving here from California, Texas and Nebraska.

“It comes down to affordability and job opportunities,” she said, noting that Greeley is a relatively short commute to Loveland and Fort Collins.

There’s one other factor attracting new residents to Greeley, West said: Word is getting out that there is in fact plenty to do in Greeley and she credits the city’s Greeley Unexpected campaign for accomplishing just that.

So what is there to do? Greeley now has a variety of trendy restaurants, brewpubs and distilleries, galleries, summer concerts, Arts Picnic and Monster Day along with the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival, the Blues Jam, Greeley Independence Stampede, and soon UNC football games coached by former Bronco Ed McCaffrey.

And remember, Greeley is just a hop, skip and jump (albeit sometimes a slow-motion hop, skip and jump) to Denver, Fort Collins and Loveland and points between.

Now who says there’s nothing to do in Greeley?

Container gardening: From an all-white moon garden to herbs that pack a punch, here are some trends for the 2021 growing season

“Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve seen a huge uptick in people wanting to garden,” said Andrew Balfe, manager of annuals at Gethsemane Garden Center in Chicago. “A lot of industries were

hard hit, but I think that garden centers across the country had a record year because people were trapped at home and they were either gardening more than they used to, or people were trying something new that they had thought about and now had time to go out and try.”

If you’re feeling the urge to get back to the garden but don’t have a yard, Balfe suggests planting a container garden and letting nature take over your porch or balcony. “We know that many of our customers don’t have space for a big garden. You’re working on a balcony but there’s a lot that you can do. A lot of plants, especially annuals, do well in containers,” he said.

“There’s an old adage about container gardens: thriller, filler, spiller,” Balfe said. “When you’re doing a container, you want to have something that catches the eye, something that fills in, and something that trails over.”

To get the most out of your container garden, create a grouping of flowering annuals and fragrant herbs in mixed sizes of pots, from tiny to oversized. A raised garden planter on wheels is another option to maximize space with a planting bed on top and storage underneath. These can easily be moved to follow the sun and many designs have selfwatering systems to keep things growing if you miss a day.

On color trends, Balfe said it’s a personal thing: “Some people are very picky about the colors they choose, and other people just like a rainbow; but I will say that white is always big.”

“A moon garden is an oldfashioned thing that disappeared for a while and has been rediscovered,” he said. “You plant a lot of white flowering plants in one spot so that at night it’s illuminated by the moon or an outdoor light and you can enjoy it after the sun goes down.”

A few lesser-known white flowers that Balfe likes are nicotiana, mandevilla, cosmos and moonflower, a plant that only blooms at night.

“There’s no right or wrong when it comes to container gardening,” he said. “It’s supposed to make you happy; it’s supposed to make you feel good when you look at it, so have fun with it.”

He also suggests epazote, an herb that’s often used in Mexican cooking and has a grassy flavor with notes of oregano, anise, citrus and mint, and perilla, a fragrant herb used in Asian cooking that has a licorice and basil-like flavor.

Not all compost is created equally

Deryn Davidson, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County On a recent sunny afternoon, I was talking with Niwot resident Alicia Livitt about compost for her garden. She was explaining that she would like a compost pile but didn’t really see where one would fit in her landscape and that as an amateur gardener, the whole idea of it seems intimidating. This is an understandable and common sentiment.

In the October 2020 article (in this publication) by Sharon Bokan, she breaks down how to compost your own yard and garden waste in easy to follow steps. For anyone interested in getting started yourself, I highly recommend looking it up. There is another

option for getting compost for your yard and garden and that is ordering it commercially. You can buy it bagged from nurseries and garden centers or in bulk (loose) from local material yards.

The most common types available for purchase are plantbased and animal (manure) based.

Plant-based is made up of things like leaves, grass, ground tree limbs, certain food scraps and sometimes brewery residuals.

Manure based will likely include some of the bedding material that the manure was collected in. It is important to know that in Colorado there are no regulations on compost to say what goes into it or in what stage of decomposition it is. Ideally, whatever you choose will be finished or mature compost. It should be dark and crumbly with

a nice earthy smell. If it resembles the original contents, it probably isn’t fully processed. The issue with using unfinished compost is that it could be “hot”, meaning it has a high level of ammonia which may burn your plants.

You can use uncomposted, fresh manure, however it will also likely have high levels of ammonia and manure (fresh or aged) also has high levels of salts. To avoid the high ammonia, you can look for aged manure which is typically available bagged at garden centers and nurseries. Aged manure will not have as strong an odor as fresh which is a bonus. It’s harder to avoid the salts and therefore important to not apply too much at a time. If you suspect high ammonia or salt levels, your best bet is to work it into the soil in the fall and wait to plant until spring.

The time and precipitation will help dilute the residuals.

I spoke with Landscape Designer, Shanti Schultz of Love in Bloom and asked if she prefers plant or manure-based compost for her projects. She said that for vegetables, fruit trees and lawns she likes to use manure, and for ornamental beds she prefers plant based. When asked why, she responded, “Veggies, fruit and lawns take up a lot of nutrients, so they need the extra boost, and the nutrients in manure dissipate over a longer period of time.”

Whichever type of compost you choose, it should be well worked into the top 6-8” of your soil.

When gardeners refer to “organic matter”, they are talking about organic compounds from plants or animals that are in various stages of decomposition. Colorado soils are typically low in organic matter, so unless you are only growing native plants and those which are adapted to our native soils, amending is often needed.

One way to know if you need to amend is by doing a soil test. This gives you baseline information to work from and you can retest every 5 years or so. The exchange is a claims history database generated by LexisNexis enabling insurance companies to access claims information on a property before they underwrite, rate, or quote an insurance policy.

The exchange will list insurance losses on a property going back seven years. The majority of home insurance companies contribute records of their losses to the database.

If I have a CLUE, do I still need an inspection?

An inspection is never performed to generate a CLUE report. A CLUE report gives no recommendations about a particular issue -- it only communicates what the circumstances of the insurance claim were. However, a CLUE report is a great tool to share with the home inspector. The home inspector can review the issue and check to see that any repair work was done properly.

Paul F. P. Pogue Ask Angi (TNS) Over time, you may notice changes in the levels of your yard and landscape. Sections of dirt may be worn down by erosion, water may pool in puddles in your lawn or you may have an area of depression that sinks and dips beneath the ground.

The solution to this and several other problems is to hire a pro to level your yard. This is also known as grading or resloping.

Erosion drainage is the most common cause for needing a regrade. Buried building materials, a sewer leak or even a small depression from a removed tree stump can also impact your yard’s level. Animal damage and treeroot growth are other common causes. Ultimately, anywhere dirt settles over the years can lead to an uneven lawn.

Numerous projects could also be the culprit. If you’re preparing ground for a driveway, getting ready to build a foundation or

A poorly graded yard is more than just an aesthetic eyesore.

Water traveling toward your home or pooling around its edges can damage your foundation or basement and cause leaks. Poor leveling can also have a negative impact on landscaping including gardens and trees.

Some leveling jobs are fairly basic, in which the contractor lays new dirt and levels it off. Other more complex jobs involve using heavy machinery to bring the yard

The required fill dirt costs about $15 per cubic yard, though this will vary based on location. The more complex the job and the more dirt required, the more it’s likely to cost.

2. Place a sofa along a long wall to make narrow spaces feel wider.

4. Experiment with extending a sofa by putting similar sections together such as a one-arm sofa with a chaise.

5. Choose your large pieces like a sofa in a space first. For example, choose your sofa before your nightstands.

You can also lower the longterm erosion risk with a number of yard features. Certain new plants can help keep the earth stable and retaining walls, wooden or metal edging, or added mulch or sod can all help combat erosion.
