Deryn Davidson, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County Gardening with native plants is not a new concept. There are people who have been doing it for a long time, but it’s not what I would call, mainstream. It is, however, gaining in popularity as people discover that a native plant garden provides much more than just water savings. Gardeners of all types from patio planters to commercial properties can play an important role in helping to increase pollinator and wildlife habitat and bolster biodiversity.

Our urban and suburban landscapes can serve as nature preserves if we choose the right plant species. Potential water savings is certainly a plus, as is celebrating the renowned Colorado aesthetic that draws visitors to our national parks and open spaces every year.

Whether you are new to incorporating native plants into your landscape or have been doing it for decades, the 6th annual Landscaping with Colorado Native Plants Conference promises to have something for you. Scheduled on Saturday, February 27, things will look a little different this year as it will be presented in a virtual format for everyone’s safety and convenience.

David Salman, Founder of High Country Gardens will kick things off as the keynote speaker. In his session titled, “A Western Perspective on Native Plants; A Career

Bringing Natives from Habitat to Market,” he will regale participants with stories from the past 35-plus years in the industry. He will explain how native plant collections transition from the wild into home horticulture and about how some of his introductions were discovered. The rest of the day will be split into two tracks, “New to Natives” and “Knows the Natives,” along with virtual exhibitor booths for people to visit during breaks.

Opening the New to Natives track is award winning author Susan Tweit speaking on what native plants need to thrive, it might different than what you expect!

Amy Yarger of the Butterfly Pavilion will share information on how to choose plants that are necessary to raise the next generation, in her session, “Bringing Up Baby…

Bugs,” and Lisa Olsen with Wild Ones Front Range Chapter will be sharing tips on what native plants are available in the nursery trade, where to find them and advice on plant specific preferred growing conditions.

If you’d like to dig a little deeper into the gardening with native plants world, the Knows the Natives track features Alison Peck of Matrix Gardens who will be discussing how native plants can be a vital part of sequestering carbon and reducing greenhouse gasses in her session, “Natural Climate Solution Heroes: Native Plants.” Jim Tolstrup from High

Plains Environmental Center is speaking on how to effectively use native plants in your garden designs and Jennifer Bousselot, Assistant Professor of Horticulture at CSU will round out the track with a discussion about her research on, “Colorado Native Plant Finishing Protocols for the Green Industry,” an important piece of the puzzle for getting more native plants into the nursery trade and available to you.

Finally, the closing keynote is author and native plant advocate Marcia Tatroe who will be sharing her experience gardening with native plants in Centennial, CO over that last 33 years. In her session, “Evolution of a Suburban Garden,” she is sure to have many lessons learned and expert advice to share with participants.

Gone are the days of solely traditional prints or canvases; in are the days of creativity, including innovative DIY projects. Looking for ways to spark up your walls? Here are some top tips.

1. Paint an accent wall. Using paint and creating a colorful accent wall is a great place to start to perk up your space.

2. Create a diptych or triptych using identical pieces of art in a series.

3. Include wall hangings or elements in place of traditional artwork.

COLORADO’S TOP CITIES IN 2021 30% of jobs in the surrounding economy tied to ag-related products.

Today it’s one of the most affordable of the larger cities in Colorado, ranking at nine by Bankrate.com. Other rankings are eight for safety, seven for job market, five for culture, and four for education.

The secret has long been out: Colorado is a beautiful place to live. Population is – and has been – on the rise for years, increasing to a surging rate over the last decade.

Today, the most populous Colorado cities are located east of the mountains along Interstate 25.

As people make decisions about where they will live, key factors are weighed such as affordability, safety, job market, educational attainment, and culture. These same factors were weighed in Bankrate.com’s ranking of the Best Places to Live in Colorado.

Here are the top five of the cities with the largest populations, and ranking factors ranging from one to ten. No matter the ranking, it’s safe to say, in any Colorado locale, there is a lot to love.

NO. 1: FORT COLLINS

Fort Collins looks good from all angles, ranking eight or above for affordability, safety, job market, education, and culture. “If you like beer, you’ll like Fort Collins,” writes researchers at Bankrate. com, noting the city has brewers of all sizes – from craft brewers like Odell and New Belgium to the Anheuser-Busch operation.

The city also offers enticing outdoor living, including rafting the Cache la Poudre River and hiking the trails the cover more than 280 miles. And to support 4

all of that recreation, Fort Collins and the surrounding area experienced an 18% rise in the number of jobs from 2014 to 2019. While most were in government, area employers are diversified and include Hewlett Packard, Otterbox, and Colorado State University.

NO. 2: COLORADO SPRINGS Colorado Springs features easy accessibility to outdoor activities, a booming job market, and future development plans that include a 3.7 million-square-foot Amazon fulfillment center and a new soccer stadium for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks, reports Bankrate. com. While “The Springs” felt the sting of the pandemic in 2020, the city is poised for a rebound. Housing prices may be the early indicator, which has seen the average price rise more than 18%. The city ranks eight for affordability and job market, seven for education and culture, and five for safety.

NO. 3: DENVER Denver continues to attract new residents looking for an urban

lifestyle that’s rich with culture and outdoor living. Since 2010, the city’s population has grown by a cumulative 21%, adding more than 127,000 people, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Mile High City is also bringing in tech companies, recently coming in at No. 10 in CompTIA’s December 2020 IT Employment Tracker for tech job growth. Even with its growth, the city is focused on continuing to be healthy and sustainable. Plans are in the works for an additional 125 miles of bike lanes and by 2030, the goal is to be run on 100-percent renewable energy.

Denver ranks eight for education and culture, seven for job market, six for affordability, and four for safety.

NO. 5: BOULDER As home to the University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder residents are what you might expect: high educated. Nearly 75% of those 25 and older have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. Employment opportunities are in aerospace, renewable energy, and IT. This is mixed with a strong arts community, with more than 30 art galleries and a long-running Shakespeare Festival. However, the cost of living in Boulder ranks among some of the highest costs in the nation, coming in at three out of 10 for affordability, according to Bankrate.com. Other rankings are 10 for education, nine for job market, and eight for culture and safety.

More on choosing paint colors (and reducing visual torture) (gold), your trim should be a cooler color (bright white). If you don’t do this, a warm wall color with warm trim will look muddy and bland (generally meh). If you have a cool wall color with cool trim, it will look cold and sterile (operating room). Think opposites are attractive.

BY MARY LYNN BRUNY Apparently, based on reader feedback from a recent column, choosing paint colors is even more torturous for homeowners than even I imagined. (My heart goes out to the reader who wrote me about the “ghastly” external house color she is enduring daily. Poor thing! Maybe around year three she’ll stop cringing every time she comes home.)

Let’s start with reiterating that choosing paint colors is a hard thing to do, even for visually oriented people. (Very few people are good at everything. And let’s face it, if they are we usually can’t stand them.) Being good at choosing paint colors takes a natural predisposition, experience and a certain amount of trial and error.

That being said, here are some things I’ve figured out over the years by making plenty of blunders: Paint color strips One would think these show lighter to darker versions of the same color, which the strips look like. Thus, if you try one color and it’s too light, you would go one color down on the strip and use that. No. This is not the case even though it seems logical. All the colors on

Floor colors When you’re choosing paint, you have to take the color of your flooring into consideration as well. This seems pretty obvious, but lots of people think of flooring as neutral – maybe because it’s on another plane. This is far from true. We recently got new carpeting which is a cooler color than our previous and it changed the overall feeling of the rooms. I balanced this out by adding warmer accents that I stole from other parts of the house. Now those rooms look off. Always something. the strip are unique due to how paint colors are formulated. Unfortunately, you can’t just make a color slightly lighter or darker. It’s frustrating, I know, but just how it is.

Paint sheens One would also think that paint would look the same in any sheen (matt, eggshell, etcetera). But once again, no. Sheens all have different base formulas that subtly change any color, along with looking different due to light reflection. I learned this the hard way when our master bath and bedroom – supposedly the same color in different sheens – looked like completely different colors. After much kvetching and many heavy sighs I’ve accepted this, kind of, maybe.

Trim/wall color combinations Here’s a rule of thumb I’ve generally found to be true: If you have a cool wall color (blue), your trim should have a hint of warmth (warmer white). If you have a warm wall color

Dealing with an “ugly” color Back to our reader with the heinous external color: I have learned you can better tolerate what you find an unattractive color if you add accents in complementary colors. For instance, if the outside of your home is a bland pea soup green, it would probably look better with a wreath or outdoor furniture cushions/pillows in reds or purples. In general, muddy colors like pea soup look better with bright-toned complementary colors (magenta). Conversely, very bright paint colors (lime green) can be tempered with accents of muddy-toned complementary colors (earthy mustard).

Hopefully these hints help some homeowners avoid making paint choices they regret. No one should cringe every time they come home.
