rial for good reason, Fritillaria imperialis’ tall, tufted stalks cause strolling neighbors to stop and stare. Wreathed in hanging, bell-shaped blooms, the shoots unfold like an alien plant seen on a science fiction show. Unusual in many gardens, this bulb is a sure winner of hearts when planted in clumps of three to five. But these bulbs are temperamental. If bruised in shipping they rot instead of thrive, so check the quality closely when you purchase or receive yours from mail order. Plant in full sun with good drainage. Zones 4–7.

Bulb planting time is upon us One of the best things a gardener can do for themselves is shake off the end-ofseason CAROL O’MEARA blues, CSU Extension get out, and get planting. What you pop into the ground now will result in an invigorating, eye-popping start to next spring’s season when the bulbs you plant come out to play. Dig deep into your well of stamina, get out the trowels, your kneeling cushions and start planting: finally the time has arrived to pop those bulbs in the ground. For best success, keep these tips in mind: • With bulbs, size matters. Choose large, well-formed bulbs that are blemish free. • Plant bulbs when soil temperatures are cool – 55 to 58 degrees. • Dig holes four times the height of the bulb, and place bulbs tips up. • There’s no need to fertilize at planting, instead, fertilize in spring when shoots first show. • Add four inches of mulch to buf-

fer soil temperatures. What’s hot in bulbs right now:

A gorgeous, double-flowered early tulip is an apricot and rose colored stunner. Foxy Foxtrot’s ruffled petals mix well with other colors, especially purples and whites. It grows well in containers so gardeners in deer country can place them up on decks away from munching animals. Zones 3–8.

Multi-flowered, nodding Triandus, and single flowered cyclamineus types will woo you with back swept petals (reflexed), or fragrance. And those with split coronas are simply magnificent. Look for the fantastic Tête Bouclé, a two-toned jewel of yellow and orange. The double blossoms arrive early to midseason. Or add in the large, ruffled cups of Tromba Rosa, with its orange-pink trumpet and white petals. Zones 3–8.

Daffodils

Hyacinth

Daffodils (Narcissus spp.) are an enchanting group that, as a bonus, is deer resistant. And if you’re thinking daffodils are limited to the single-cup with petals, explore your options: Hoop Petticoats (Bulbocodiums) look like the dresses they’re nicknamed after, with deep, bell-like flowers.

Double flowers aren’t limited to tulips or daffodils; hyacinths have them too. With Blue Tango, hyacinth lovers get a densely packed display of the perfumed bulb. They’re harder to find, so if you’re looking to add them, shop now.

Fall blooms to keep your garden beautiful to the bitter end

Salvia farinacea ‘Victoria’ (mealycup sage). (Nina Koziol/Chicago Tribune)

By Nina A. Koziol, Chicago Tribune (TNS) By September, some gardens (and gardeners) are looking a little tired. Most of the perennials have finished blooming, but you can extend the show well into fall with a few latebloomers. Here’s a peek at some exceptional plants that go beyond the typical ornamental kale, mums and pansies.

SALVIA FARINACEA ‘VICTORIA’ (MEALYCUP SAGE) This annual has bloomed since mid-May in our garden and will continue right up to the first fall frost. It’s a favorite of butterflies, like the swallowtail in the photo, and bees. Stand back and watch the pollinators, including migrating hummingbirds, sip from the blossoms. Grow it in pots or in the ground. Bonus: Cut the individual flower stems, remove the leaves, tie the stems together and hang them in a dark, dry place, and they’ll keep their blue colors for dried winter arrangements. Plant in full sun to light shade. Reaches about 20 inches tall and 12 inches wide.

ALLIUM ‘OZAWA’ (ORNAMENTAL ONION) “Personally, I like Allium ‘Ozawa’ and Schizachyrium scoparium ‘PraiSeptember 24-25, 2016

flower Farm in Coldwater, Ontario (.wildflowerfarm.com Plant in full sun to part shade. Reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Hardy in zones 4 to 8.

SCHIZACHYRIUM SCOPARIUM ‘PRAIRIE BLUES’ (LITTLE BLUESTEM)

“The lime flowers turn to white and then to a blush pink as the weather gets cooler,” says Katrina Chipman, horticulture coordinator at The Morton Arboretum (mortonarb.org Plant in part to full sun. Reaches between 3 and 6 feet tall and wide. Hardy in zones 3 to 8.

“This grass provides a great bluish color contrast to all of the saturated greens of late summer, then gradually takes on a rosy-orange tinge as autumn progresses,” Mehaffey said. “This particular cultivar is a little relaxed in form, and there are others, like ‘Standing Ovation’ and ‘Carousel’ that stay more upright. Little bluestem has been the focus of breeding work in recent years, and there are named selections with various attributes, but all of them share native plant hardiness and wonderful color through fall and winter.” Plant in full sun, well-drained soil. Reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and about 18 inches wide. Hardy in zones 3 to 10.

HYDRANGEA PANICULATA ‘JANE’ (LITTLE LIME HYDRANGEA)

Little Lime hydrangea. (Proven Winners)

ANEMONE X HYBRIDA ‘HONORINE JOBERT’ (WINDFLOWER) Fall-blooming anemones are a favorite of Susy Stone, perennial plant manager at Lurvey’s Garden Center in Des Plaines, Ill. The plants bloom in September and October. “I love the clean, delicate flowers on the anemone — they move with the most gentle winds and are beautiful and long-lasting as a cut flower.” Plant in full sun to part shade. Reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and 1 1/2 to 2 feet wide. Hardy in zones 4 to 8.

SYMPHYOTRICHUM LAEVE (SMOOTH ASTER) This plant is a butterfly magnet. “Smooth aster is a gorgeous cut flower and is one of the most attractive and long-lived of all the asters,” says Miriam Goldberger of Wild-

Title transfer requires different measures in multiple scenarios By Ilyce Glink and Samuel J. Tamkin, Tribune Content Agency

Q

: My mother’s house is paid for and has no outstanding liens or loans. My brother has lived in the home for more than 35 years. How can I put the house in his name?

A

: If your mother is alive, she can simply transfer title in the home to your brother by deed. Depending on how much your mom paid for the home and what the home is worth today, she can simply prepare or have an attorney prepare a deed that would transfer her interest in the home to your brother. You should be aware that the transfer of title in some locations may require the payment of a transfer tax, may trigger the re-

4

AT HOME

evaluation of the property for real estate tax purposes, and may require a municipal inspection. But, in general, the transfer of a home to a relative is not a complicated matter and any real estate attorney should be able to assist you in the change of ownership. Having said that, if your mother has died the home should go to the person designated in your mom’s will. If she had a will and designated that all of her children were to inherit the home, then you, your brother and any other siblings could work together to make sure that the home goes to your brother. But any one of your siblings could object and could require that his or her share of the home be paid to him or her in cash in exchange for transfer of his or her interest to your brother. Lastly, if your mother didn’t have a will, the home would pass

to you and your siblings according to state law. The process would be similar to the one outlined above for a will in having all children agree that the home should pass to your brother. Whether you have her will or she died intestate (without a will), you might need some assistance in the transfer. An attorney that does probate work can help you transfer the title from your mom’s estate to your brother. Depending on what other assets your mom had, the process can be simple and you might be able to do it yourself. Nevertheless, going to probate court and navigating the legal system isn’t always an easy thing to do and that’s where a good probate attorney can help you. On a different note, if your mom held title to her home in a trust and if you are the executor of that trust, you may have the ability to

Reporter-Herald – AtHomeColorado.com

simply transfer title of the home from the trust to your brother’s name. We caution you that the transfer to him to the exclusion of other siblings may be contrary to the terms of the trust, so you’d want to make sure you understand what the trust called for and make sure everybody in the family is in agreement to what you are planning to do. ———————————————

Style at Home

Benches, ottomans add seating, style By Mary Carol Garrity, Tribune News Service (TNS) In the sports world, being benched is a bad thing, I know. (Believe me, if I had ever done sports in high school, that’s where I would have languished!) But for me, after a day of sprinting around up and down the stairs a jillion times, the thought of melting into a soft chair with my feet up on a bench or ottoman sounds pretty darn amazing. Add a glass of wine and a good book, and I’m in paradise. Once the right bench or ottoman enters your life, you will never, ever want to be without it again. Often, they can be used interchangeably, and are right at home in lots of spots in your home, helping out in myriad ways, from giving you a place to display your treasures, rest your feet and welcome more guests. Here are a few of my favorite ways to use benches and ottomans:

ADD A SPLASH OF STYLE When we design rooms for customers, you can bet your bottom dollar there will be at least one ottoman or bench in the floorplan. For such a small piece, they pack a lot of style. And, they are a welcomed addition to just about any space in your home. My favorite use is to place an interesting ottoman in the center of a conversation grouping, a hub for a well-put-together room.

September 24-25, 2016

This look shows off one side of an ottoman’s reversible slipcover. (Handout/TNS) But don’t stop there. A short bench makes an interesting side table in your living room, and offers extra seating in a pinch. Put a narrow bench in your hallway to break up all that wall space. Because they are so small, you can cover an ottoman or bench with a splashy fabric that you might not otherwise dare to use on a bigger, costlier piece of furniture. If you can’t make up your mind on what fabric to use, try this trick. By creating a custom, reversible slip cover, she got three completely different looks. Rug-covered ottomans are some of our most popular sellers, and I have one in my own home that I adore. But you aren’t limited to upholstered ottomans or benches with fabric seats or cushions. You can find them made from just about any material, from seagrass to hides, wood to metal. And when it comes to style, the sky is the limit.

You can find ottomans made from just about any material, from seagrass to hides, wood to metal. (Handout/TNS)

A BIT OF STORAGE Benches and ottomans were just made to have stuff tossed on top of them. They are a perfect pick for your foyer or by your back door, a convenient place to lob your purse and coat as you walk in the door. I love the luxurious look of beds finished off with rows of accent pillows. Dan, who calls the beds in our home Pillow Hell, is never sure what to do with all those pillows when you turn down the bed at night. Easy! Place a bench or ottoman at the foot of your bed. They do a lovely job of finishing off the look of a great bedding ensemble, and, at night, they are the perfect place to pile up your accent pillows. If you’re putting a bench at the end of a bed, I’d suggest one that is backless, so it doesn’t stick up over the top of your bed. And, make sure its dimensions work well for your space — not too

Reporter-Herald – AtHomeColorado.com

wide so that it sticks out beyond the sides of your bed, and not too deep so as to hamper movement around your room. You’d hate to hammer you toe on it when you get up at night!

A LITTLE EXTRA SEATING To get more friends around your dining table, add a bench or two to the sides of your tables. At big Thanksgiving dinners, when I’ve had to shoehorn in lots of friends and family around our dining table, I’ve added small benches to the head and foot of the table so two can sit there instead of one. Depending upon the size of your bench or ottoman, you can slide them under a sofa table or in front of your hearth for extra seating. ——— This column was adapted from Mary Carol Garrity’s blog at www. nellhills.com

By L. L. Charles for At Home It’s been a good summer at the Lakes at Centerra. Wonderland Homes, a local homebuilder with a 50-year legacy in Colorado, has recently introduced two new home collections here: The Tranquility and the Summit series. Many people got their first look at these homes during the recent Northern Colorado Parade of Homes. “We have seen a dramatic increase in our visitors, and the number of people choosing a Wonderland home in this community,” says Mike Davizdson, vice president of sales and marketing. “This increase is, in part no doubt, due to the opening of the brand new STEAM-focused K-8 High Plains School that is now open in the neighborhood.” Many couples and “empty nesters” are also finding the Tranquility series of ranch homes to be exactly what they have been looking for. The lock-and-leave lifestyle is perfect for active seniors and professional adults. Are your home decorating ideas trendy or not? WHO BETTER TO TRUST WITH YOUR

Painting walls gray and white open up various options for accent colors throughout the home. (Photo by Chelsea Strain)

By Amanda Bell, Angie’s List From wall colors to accessories, what design trends dominate decorating, and which decorating ideas are passing fads? Interior designers Jeanette Turk of Decorating Den Interiors in Baton Rouge, La., and Marisa Moore, owner of Interior Style in Chantilly, Va., weigh in on what’s in — and what’s out — in the world of home decor.

1. WHITE AND GRAY WALLS: TRENDY- Gray and white walls remain the go-to neutral wall colors over beiges and tans, Turk says. “Everything is light, airy and bright,” she says. “If you’re seeing dark colors, they’re navy blue on accent walls or in pops on textiles.”

2. FORMAL LIVING ROOMS: NOT TRENDY- More homeowners are opting to replace formal sitting areas with multi-purpose rooms or home office spaces, according to Turk and Moore. “As more people work from home, they’re willing to spend more money on a dedicated home office rather than just a small chair and lap desk,” Turk says.

3. BRUSHED NICKEL FIXTURES: NOT TRENDY -While chrome finishes remain popular for bathroom fixtures, elsewhere around the house and in home accessories gold reigns the world of metallic finishes, along with brass, ahead of brushed nickel and oil-rubbed bronze, Turk says. “Gold is the September 24-25, 2016

metal of the year in everything from drawer hardware to light fixtures and other accent pieces,” she says.

MORTGAGE THAN YOUR VERY OWN NEIGHBORS?

VOTED “BEST MORTGAGE LENDER” ALONG THE FRONT RANGE.

4. NATURAL ELEMENTS: TRENDY- Fresh and simple remain the ideal aesthetic as mid-century modern and transitional decorating ideas continue to gain popularity, Moore says. Get the look by combining materials like furniture in gray- and white-washed or natural wood tones and textiles in linen and burlap fabrics.

5. GRANITE: NOT TRENDY- This year, quartz and marble surpassed the mighty granite in trendiness in the realm of countertop materials. “With their subtle patterns, white carrara in the bathroom and marble in the kitchen offer a much sleeker look than granite,” Turk says.

6. PATTERNED WALLPAPER: TRENDY- Your grandmother’s wallpaper with a duck border? Definitely not on trend. Instead, think natural elements like grass cloths and subtle geometric prints and variations of color, Moore says. Make a statement by applying a pattern to a feature wall, or go for a cozy effect and wallpaper an entire room. ——— Amanda Bell is a reporter for Angie’s List, a trusted provider of local consumer reviews and an online marketplace of services from top-rated providers. Vessel sinks are very versatile

Since vessel sinks are countertop installed, they usually sit up a little higher than a standard sink. (Handout/TNS)

By Ed Del Grande, Tribune News Service (TNS) Q: Dear Ed: I am getting older and find myself holding onto things to keep my balance. With that said, we’re doing an aging-in-place remodel to our bathroom. I would like a vessel-type sink but want one

made of very strong materials and more suited to my needs. Can you please point me in the right direction for choosing my new bathroom vessel sink? — Holly, Florida A: Vessel sinks are attractive additions to any bathroom. The

good news is the choices are very versatile when it comes to style and materials. For aging-in-place bathrooms, you may want to look into a lower and wider vessel sink with a larger open bowl area that’s gently curved. This style vessel sink is easy to access and since vessel sinks are countertop installed, they usually sit up a little higher than a standard sink. (Good for the back.) For material, if you’re looking for strength and durability, enameled cast iron is a solid choice. Also, with its thick round edges, if you ever have to grab onto the rim of the sink, you’ll know you made a firm decision. ——— Master Contractor/Plumber Ed Del Grande is known internationally as the author of the book “Ed Del Grande’s House Call,” the host of TV and Internet shows, and a LEED green associate. The simple organization hacks tidy people do every day By Sophie Miura, Domaine (TNS) Ask me to locate an electronic bill and a quick Command + F will retrieve my archive in an instant. Ask me to find hard-copy medical records or receipts, and that’s a completely different story. If, like me, you’ve mastered a digital filing system but don’t quite know how to organize life’s administrative paperwork, it’s time to declutter your desk. The digital age might have replaced mounting paper bills with a bursting inbox, but according to Martha Stewart, a filing system is crucial for important documents — something many millennials overlook. Guilty? Here are five simple hacks tidy people swear by for an organized workspace.

spots is an easy way to lose track of paperwork. Choose one place to store all important documents, ideally near a computer so you can cross-reference soft and hard copies.

Reduce receipts: Holding onto important receipts and warranty information might seem like a safe bet, but it can quickly spiral out of control. “One of the things that causes chaos is that people don’t know what they need, so they save everything,” says Julie Morgenstern, author of Organizing From the Inside Out. She suggests making an automatic toss list for unnecessary receipts and storing the rest in an arcadian file by month. Review this at tax time, and toss any papers that aren’t relevant.

Create a mail sorting area: Centralize paperwork: Leaving items scattered around the house or creating multiple filing 12

To prevent paperwork from piling up, add a wastepaper bin to your entryway so that you’re forced to

keep or toss mail straight away.

Sort bills by month, not type: Professional organizer Barry Izsak says it’s a mistake to file bills based on type. Instead, he recommends organizing paperwork by month or scanning the copy to add it to your digital system before recycling the original.

Use a safe-deposit box: Some important documents should be stored away from the rest of your filing in a safe-deposit box. This includes birth certificates, medical records and legal documents. Make sure you keep these together and retain copies for quick reference. ——— Get the latest on home decor trends, design ideas, shopping guides and food news, and take a look inside your favorite celebrity homes on DomaineHome.com.
