Health Talk

FRIDAY, MAY 10

1 p.m.

Deike Auditorium

May is Mental Health Month. Learn more about the importance of taking care of your mental health as we debunk myths and stigmas together. We’ll provide screenings and handouts and share local resources as part of this interactive presentation. Afterward, you’ll have the opportunity to speak privately with representatives from Masonic Village Home Health and the Baird Wellness Center, outside the auditorium. Discover the support available to you and your loved ones on campus. This talk is sponsored by Masonic Village’s home and communitybased services in partnership with Mental Health America of Lancaster.

WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH?

Mental health is a state of mind. When you’re mentally healthy, you’ll find most areas of your life are in a positive place. This doesn’t mean things are always peachy. You can have good mental health and still have sadness or stress at times in your life. To support good mental health, stay active, eat right, get enough sleep, make time for mindfulness and focus on your relationships.

For older adults, health conditions, life events (divorce, death of loved ones, etc.), loneliness and retirement can increase the risk of mental illness, especially depression. Mental illness is not a “normal” sign of aging or a result of mental decline. About 15% of adults in their 60s and beyond have a mental illness (according to the National Alliance of Mental Illness).

Don’t wait until your symptoms are severe to seek help. If you may be suffering from depression or anxiety, contact your primary care physician to discuss the most appropriate treatment options for you or your loved one.
