Located in the Star Points Building, the Barley Wellness Center offers state-of-the-art equipment, fitness classes and an indoor pool and spa. Trained staff will help you develop a personalized fitness program.

Golden Aerobics

Designed to work your entire body, this class will benefit individuals who are looking for an active cardiovascular workout with intervals of strength, flexibility and range-of-motion exercises.

Tai Chi

TUESDAY & THURSDAY, 10 - 10:30 A.M.

Assembly Room

Tai Chi has been described as meditation in motion, gentle flowing movement performed in a slow, focused manner. Anyone can participate, as Tai Chi places minimal stress on muscles and joints. The benefits of Tai Chi include decreased stress, increased energy and improved flexibility and balance.

Our wellness staff will warm you up and cool you down with various exercises before and after a short walk. Join neighbors and friends for good music and conversation, all while contributing to a healthy, active lifestyle.

The wellness team will guide you through gentle stretches to improve flexibility and balance and increase range of motion, making it easier to perform everyday tasks.

Meditation Circle

MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS, 8 A.M.

Activity Room 2

Meditation is a powerful tool to find a sense of well-being, peace and relaxation. It involves sitting quietly, focusing on the present moment and calming the mind. We’ve started a meditation circle for first-time and long-time practitioners. We’ll spend a few minutes each session sharing experiences and close with a 20-minute silent meditation. All are welcome. Contact Karen Glass at 518-637-1160 if you are interested, or just come to the circle.

The Masonic Village Workshop is a non-profit club giving residents the opportunity to use a space for woodworking, crafting and minor repairs. A wide variety of hand and power tools are available for use. Also, there is a separate “finishing room” for painting and varnishing. There are enough workstations in the shop for several people to work at the same time. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there.

Howard Voight Presents: Oakland – Pittsburgh Civic Center

You will learn about Pittsburgh’s origin and the background, construction and architecture of the Cathedral of Learning. Howard will examine how and why many of our monumental buildings came to be: Phipps Conservatory, Schenley Hotel, Carnegie Institute, Forbes Field and more!

Meet the Artist: Caroline Stuncard

Meet another new resident who has discovered the richness of our Art Studio. Once Caroline became acclimated to Masonic Village, she stopped by the Art Studio and immediately felt the immense energy in the room. “It feels like an art department on a college campus,” she said. “Having looked at other retirement communities, I felt like a child on Christmas morning when I saw all the books, supplies and teachers that are available here. I couldn’t wait to get started.”

Other than taking a colored pencil class while in Florida, Caroline hasn’t done anything with art since high school, but that hasn’t stopped her. So far, she has taken pastel classes with Marcia Brackin, watercolor basics and watercolor pencils with Donna Billings-Davis and basic

What were the events that led up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor? In this lecture, we will see Japan wanting to take over China because of the need for oil and other supplies threatened by the U.S.controlled Philippines.

The Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor, December 1941

A day that will live in infamy. This will prove to be one of the most reckless and irresponsible strategic decisions in the history of warfare. Here, we’ll learn why the U.S. was caught off guard.

MAY 11

Japan Moves South, December 1941 to May 1942

During this time, Japan moves quickly and successfully through the Java Sea in the invasion of the Philippines, the Bataan Death March and Douglas MacArthur’s escape to Australia.

Midway: Ten Minutes to Change the War

At this time, naval warfare changed to the importance of the carriers. Here, we’ll see why the Japanese wanted to capture a base on a tiny atoll in the middle of the Pacific.

MAY 18

Guadalcanal: Jungle Warfare

While the Japanese were building an airfield on the island of Guadalcanal, the commander and chief of naval operations wanted to capture the island. Here, we’ll see the dueling personalities in the U.S. command and go ashore with the Marines to seize and hold the airfield.

The Big Blue Fleet and American Industry

Part of the success of this can be attributed to the American industry, with an astonishing output of airplanes and aircraft carriers.

A Three Front Pacific War, January to May 1944

During this time, the U.S. was making great gains in the Pacific Theater. We’ll see the stepping stone strategy as the military advanced from the Gilberts to the Marshalls and beyond.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf, October 1944

One professor feels this was the greatest naval battle in history. The Americans in the gulf teetered on the brink of disaster. We’ll find out about the confusion and misunderstandings the U.S. Navy was able to inflict and their decisive victory over Japan.
