Located in the Star Points Building, the Barley Wellness Center offers state-of-the-art equipment, fitness classes and an indoor pool and spa. Trained staff will help you develop a personalized fitness program. Classes (All classes are free to residents.)

Water Exercise

Improve your overall health with a combination of aerobic conditioning, resistance training and balance exercises, while enjoying the beautiful pool.

Fit for Life

Fit for Life focuses on balance, strength and flexibility for a better quality of life.

Senior Yoga

Assembly Room

Our instructor, Claudia, will guide you through a gentle half-hour yoga session of seated and standing poses focused on strength, relaxation, balance and flexibility.

Golden Aerobics

Tuesday & Thursday 9 - 9:45 a.m.

Assembly Room

Designed to work your entire body, this class will benefit individuals who are looking for an active cardiovascular workout with intervals of strength, flexibility and range-of-motion exercises.

Tai Chi

Tuesday & Thursday 10 – 10:30 a.m.

Assembly Room

Tai Chi has been described as meditation in motion, gentle flowing movement performed in a slow, focused manner. Anyone can participate, as Tai Chi places minimal stress on muscles and joints. The benefits of Tai Chi include decreased stress, increased energy and improved flexibility and balance.

Walking Group

Tuesday & Thursday 11 - 11:30 a.m.

Assembly Room

Our wellness staff will warm you up and cool you down with various exercises before and after a short walk. Join neighbors and friends for good music and conversation, all while contributing to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Stretching

Tuesday & Thursday 1:30 - 2:15 p.m.

Activity Room 6

The wellness team will guide you through gentle stretches to improve flexibility and balance and increase range of motion, making it easier to perform everyday tasks.

JUNE RECIPE OF THE MONTH: BASIL PESTO

INGREDIENTS

2 cups basil leaves, packed

2 garlic gloves

¼ cup pine nuts

2/3 cup olive oil

½ cup grated parmesan

1 ¼ tsp. salt

¼ tsp. pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine basil, garlic and pine nuts in a food processor and pulse until coarsely chopped. Add oil and process until smooth. Add cheese and pulse until incorporated. Season with salt and pepper.

Yields: Approx. 2 cups

SERVING IDEAS

-Toss with fresh-cooked pasta with a little extra

olive oil, cream and chopped tomatoes.

-Spoon over broiled fish.

-Smear on grilled bread with sliced turkey or chicken, lettuce and tomato.

-Brush on a flatbread, add your favorite toppings and bake.

-Fold into mashed potatoes.

-Add to a grilled cheese.

The symbolic portraits of Peale and the realistic ones by Copley are examined in this look at the second half of the 1700s.

A Revolutionary Art

Revolutionary War veterans Peale and John Trumbull used their artistic skills to record the time of the Revolution.

Art Studio

Join us for tea and learn how to make origami (the Japanese art of paper folding) peace cranes! We will discuss

the practice of folding 1,000 cranes and how it developed, as well as its ties to the United States and World War II. Today, the practice of gifting a crane to a person who is seriously ill means a wish for their recovery and a sign of hope. The finished cranes can be folded to slip inside a card, or, fully opened, can be hung on a tree branch or made into a mobile. Cost: Free; limited to the first 15 residents who sign up with Karen Hammond.
