The Labor Movement in

Hershey: The 1937 Strike and the Italian American Community

THURSDAY, MAY 1, 10 A.M.

Keystone Room

This presentation brings the characters to life with photos and oral histories. In 1937, workers at the Hershey Chocolate Corporation went on strike because of very low wages and poor and hostile working conditions. The strike came to a halt when company loyalists, farmers and paid strikebreakers stormed the factory with weapons and brutally beat the workers. Presented by Louis Paioletti, adjunct lecturer at Penn State York and member of the board of directors of the Hershey History Center.

Art Nouveau: Embracing Designs Inspired by the Natural World

Inspired by the natural world, this international movement appeared in architecture, poster design, illustration, jewelry, glass, home décor and painting. Jim has been a soloist with the Garden State Philharmonic Orchestra and the Plainfield Symphony (NJ). He is director of keyboard activities at Eastern University and teaches piano at Philadelphia Biblical University.

Grab your suntan oil and your favorite drink, and get ready for a trip to the islands! One of the most requested Jimmy Buffett cover bands in the country, Jimmy and the Parrots perform all the great Buffett “songs you know by heart” and love. Their cover songs include favorites by Zac Brown Band, the Beach Boys and Bob Marley, among many others. Bring your lawn chair or beach blanket and join the party! Named after the famous big band leader, Glenn started performing at the age of 10. The arsenal of instruments he plays includes custom accordions, trumpets, harmonicas, trombone, flugelhorn and more. Battle of Gettysburg

FRIDAY, MAY 9, 2 P.M.

Keystone Room

Professor Ted Herman, from Elizabethtown College, will provide an overview of the Battle of Gettysburg highlight some key leadership and command decisions, and talk about their continued relevance today. In addition to being a mecca for tourists, Gettysburg continues to host leadership groups, including cadets from West Point, who make an annual trip. This discussion will dovetail with the upcoming trip to Gettysburg on May 15.

Delve into the latest neuroscientific research with 12 lectures that provide a deep understanding of what happens to the brain as we grow older. University of Michigan psychologist Thad Polk takes us down to the cellular level of the brain to discover why certain brain functions decline and which functions stay stable or even improve. On Trial for Murder: America’s Most Famous Murder Trials

This course takes us inside the courtrooms to uncover the stories of 10 of the most well-known U.S. murder trials since the turn of the 20th century. For this riveting foray into criminal law, our guide is Douglas O. Linder, the Elmer Powell Peer Professor of Law at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Law and creator of the Famous Trials website. Resident John Hope is the facilitator. Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi: Broadway and Hollywood in Stride and Swing

Husband-and-wife, Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi have earned widespread success with their arrangements of classics from the stride piano, ragtime and boogie woogie and Swing Era. Today the energetic and entertaining duo will present a program of original arrangements of songs from the classic musicals of Broadway and Hollywood. Their playing is complementary, humorous, beautiful and mutually inspiring with plenty of fireworks along the way. Film and Television

Failed to Address the Vietnam War

TUESDAY, MAY 13, 10 A.M.

While our nightly news TV screens were filled with the horror of Vietnam, during America’s involvement, only a single Hollywood film was made about it: “The Green Berets” (1968), which was John Wayne’s pro-war movie. This talk examines the limited references to Vietnam on the small and large screens with scenes from both contemporary and later TV and films that influenced America’s “Vietnam Syndrome.” Robert Wheelersburg, Ph.D., was a Navy Hospital Corpsman during the evacuation of Saigon, served on the aircraft carrier USS Midway and lived in a Vietnamese refugee camp in the Philippines providing medical care.

Bainbridge Band Spring Concert

The Bainbridge Band was established in 1896 and has been an asset to the community ever since. They not only benefit the community as a source of live entertainment but provide an excellent experience for young people to learn discipline, responsibility and appreciation of the area’s musical heritage. The band is active under the able direction of retired music educator Phil Smith, a former member of the band’s saxophone section.

Lancaster British Brass Band

Brossman Ballroom

Lancaster British Brass Band consists of 31 players and draws its personnel from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. Originally conceived as a top-level, professional quality ensemble, it includes among its membership professional solo and ensemble players and music teachers/performers. The current conductor, Dr. Tina DiMeglio, is the associate director of bands at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

The Baird Wellness Center offers an array of cardiovascular and strength equipment, functional training, personal training and group fitness classes. Massage therapy and wellness workshops on mind, body and spirit are also offered.

Group exercise classes are broadcast on MVTV Monday through Friday, in the morning.

The Hiking Club is off to Lancaster Conservancy’s Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve in Northeast Lancaster County. Several hiking/walking options are available, and all will be led by Lancaster Conservancy guides.

Option 1 is a 3/4-mile hike on a Universal Access trail accessible to all; Option 2 is a 2 to 3-mile woodland hike; and Option 3 extends the Option 2 guided hike by another 4 miles on an out-and-back walk on our own to the Money Rocks overlook for a magnificent view over Lancaster County. Cost is a $5/person to pay the guides from Lancaster Conservancy.

We will depart promptly at 8:30 a.m. from the fountain area of the FCC parking lot. Contact hike leaders Joyce and Ralph at mightyfus@icloud.com or ext. 14075 with questions and to make the required reservations. Like all club hikes, this is open to members and non-members.

MASONIC VILLAGE HEALTH CARE CENTER TOURS

Join us for a two-hour visit at the Masonic Health Care Center, and discover the services available. An information session, with time for questions and answers, will be followed by a personal tour. Meet Matt Mayo, assistant executive director/ administrator, and Julie Cartin, director of resident services. Explore our state-of-the-art clinics, event spaces and long-term care and rehab neighborhoods. Tours are also scheduled for June 3, Sept. 2, Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2.

ROOSTER WOODSHOP

Masonic Village Rooster Woodshop is located on the corner of Freemason Drive and Umbaugh Drive. The showroom is open Monday through Friday, from 8 – 11 a.m. and 1 – 3 p.m. It is also open on Saturday, from 8 – 11 a.m. There are many assorted items produced by the members. All items on display are for sale, and all Masonic Village residents and employees receive a 15% discount on a showroom item priced $100 or more. The shop can produce custom furnishings and novel items from wood, and members can also perform minor repairs to furniture upon request. Scan the QR code for a link to our Facebook page.

Pat is using the scroll saw to cut tiny pieces of wood from a board, and you can see from the pattern on which she is working that the result will be beautiful. She has won numerous first place awards for her entries each year at the Elizabethtown Fair. Please come in to see more of Pat’s work on display in our showroom. You will be impressed!
