2020

was a year in which we were all barraged with words, images, and experiences that rocked us to our core. Unprecedented. Pandemic. Isolation. Together, we focused on turning the negativity around, making it into something powerful and positive. Not just through our words, but through our actions. In these times of social isolation, we forged connections. Where there was fear, we practiced flexibility. We replaced doubts with determination. And instead of looking back, we’re looking forward.

Please note that photos of residents not wearing face masks were either taken at a proper social distance or prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

uring the first few months of 2020, the world could not have imagined the challenges and adversities that were on the horizon. Within a few months, the reality of the global pandemic set in and PPH, like other senior living communities, had to swiftly identify and establish new safety protocols and reimagine the delivery of services to prioritize the health and well-being of residents and staff.

For over 130 years, PPH has provided a safe, caring environment for thousands of residents. We have been a vital resource for seniors in the Lawndale section of Northeast Philadelphia and look forward to continuing our tradition of providing our residents the opportunity to achieve their highest quality of life. As you will see throughout this annual report, we met each challenge with hope and optimism. We learned not only to cope, but to thrive. From adjusting to limited travel and restrictions on visits from family and friends, to organizing a Gratitude Parade in appreciation of countless selfless acts, we witnessed the PPH family rise to the occasion. Residents and staff continue to work together to keep spirits high and the community safe.

esmond Tutu said that “hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.” I have asked myself where was the light during 2020, the year of COVID-19? As I look back upon the year, I see many rays of light shining upon The Philadelphia Protestant Home.

The ray of light from staff and leadership persevering to care for and protect our residents; the community and volunteers who rallied behind these efforts with PPE, sanitizing materials, lunches, and other thoughtful actions. The ray of light of unwavering hope and optimism exuding from the leadership of John Dubyk, who took over the reins of President and CEO during a pandemic.

Despite the challenges of 2020, PPH celebrated many accomplishments. We embarked on a campus-wide Wi-Fi project, laying the groundwork for enhanced connectivity for residents. This project also will enhance safety and security throughout the PPH campus, help staff work more effectively, and support resident health services through telehealth.

The amazing philanthropic ray of light from our sponsors and donors to the Strengthening Connections Campaign for Campus-Wide Wi-Fi as we strengthen the efforts for families and friends to stay connected.

The Strengthening Connections Campaign for Campus-Wide Wi-Fi, which replaced the traditional PPH Gala in 2020, raised over $250,000 in contributions from our generous sponsors and donors!

The light that Board members provided, adapting to Zoom meetings to fulfill our duties and to ask the tough questions. Staying connected meant we were able to work together on financing, strategic planning, CEO recruitment and goals, Code of Corporate Integrity, and policies and procedures governing the Board.

PPH recognized the challenge of remaining competitive in this changing market. We evaluated our infrastructure and embarked on renovations to update our campus and create an innovative atmosphere. In addition to the Wi-Fi project, other initiatives included the repointing of two building exteriors, upgraded lighting in Independent Living building hallways, updated elevators, an added parking lot, a new entrance to Alpha Manor, an upgraded heating and cooling system, and an advanced fire alarm system. As we look ahead, we are optimistic that continued safety measures, vaccinations, and a better understanding of this disease will return PPH, and the greater community, to normalcy. On behalf of our residents, families, Board of Directors, and staff, we thank you for your support and patience during this challenging time, and we look forward to welcoming you back to our campus soon. Sincerely,

Communications and interactions, albeit virtual, were critical in addressing the impact of the pandemic on finances, personnel, residents and their families, and physical campus. There were no shortages of challenges in 2020. As the PPH family moves forward into 2021 and beyond, we face the challenges ahead knowing that we have an abundance of light in our midst. So indeed, despite the darkness of 2020, we see the light of hope. With the support of the community, donors, legislators, staff, families, and friends, we will forge ahead to provide the high quality of care our residents deserve. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

John Dubyk President and CEO

WHAT WE DO

Independent Living I have been a part of PPH since 1998. I have the pleasure of being the volunteer coordinator here, and my husband Ted, years ago, was the security director. Residents Carol and We both consider PPH to be Ted Cherrington our second family. In 2016, we moved to PPH Independent Living. Ted has since moved to Pathways, our nursing area, and receives excellent care. I appreciate the care my husband is receiving as well as how we are all cared for during this continuing pandemic. What PPH means to me … ‘family, safety, friends, and continuing care.’ Not everyone would want to live where they work, but not everyone works at PPH. I am so grateful to be a part of this wonderful place that I call home. — Carol PPH Resident and Employee

Spacious floor plans, opportunities for engagement, amenities and services available on one beautiful 13-acre campus — that is the PPH lifestyle. For adults 62 years or older, PPH is more than just a place to live; it is home. Throughout the pandemic, residents enjoyed the convenience of services delivered to the community, such as banking, grocery shopping, and streaming entertainment, as well as opportunities to socialize (from a distance) — all in a safe environment.

Personal Care Residents who need additional assistance with daily living enjoy the privacy of their own residence while exploring newly renovated dining and activity areas. Our staff is committed to ensuring their care, comfort, and convenience. PPH also offers short-term respite care for those recuperating after a rehabilitative stay in nursing or long-term residency.

Memory Care Our Chapters program provides specialized memory care for those who are affected by various forms of dementia. A safe, welcoming neighborhood, Chapters provides care and programming that promote a stimulating environment.

Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Both short- and long-term care are available at PPH. Designed for those who need an individualized therapy program following a hospital stay, our short-term rehabililitation is designed to get them back to their lives as soon as possible. Long-term care offers 24-hour services in a cheerful, secure environment to assure the highest quality of care.

OUR IMPACT

KEEPING RESIDENTS CONNECTED PPH Adjusts, Finds Optimism Amid Uncertainty The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult time for many. Staying in our homes, unable to do many of the things we’d like, and see the people we’d like to see, has been a challenging, but necessary measure to protect ourselves and others. Social distancing has been arguably the most frustrating part of the adjustment. Typically at PPH, acquaintances become friends and friends become family. Not gathering in groups for activities or dinner, shaking hands, or giving an affectionate hug, are aspects of life we all miss and will never take for granted again. While social distancing has kept us separated and unable to meet in large groups, PPH still found ways to bring people together. Residents take part in PPH’s socially distanced cardio class with Wellness Coordinator Kayla Jurimas.

Wellness team found new participants despite social distancing Despite social distancing protocols that required PPH’s Wellness and Aquatics Center to close, the wellness team continued doing their part to help make exercise accessible and enjoyable for all residents. The wellness team offered a variety of Silver Sneakers® classes twice a day on our inhouse TV channels so that all residents were able to exercise safely within their own spaces. PPH resident Regina chats with her daughter.

PPH resident Dolores meets her great-grandson for the first time.

“I have never used the Wellness Center before, but I am really enjoying the TV exercise segments, and I find that it helps to get me loosened up before playing the piano,” said resident Patricia Coyne.

OUR IMPACT

Outdoor fun — Salsa and Sips, PPH Fit PPH’s wellness team held two events outside in the courtyard to kick off fall. The first event was Salsa and Sips in September and the second was PPH Fit in October. At Salsa and Sips, residents salsa danced and enjoyed a cold beer. At PPH Fit, residents line danced and enjoyed chili and hot apple cider. Fortunately, the weather cooperated for both events, as did everyone involved by social distancing and wearing masks.

Come on down! PPH Price is Right was a success! Hosted by Volunteer Coordinator Carol Cherrington, Kathy Nucero, and Bridget Klotz of Life Enrichment, residents were invited to “come on down” to the PPH Social Hall for four different shows. Games included Plinko, Pick a Pair, and Hi Lo. Winners took home prizes from the PPH Tabor Market and Gift Shop and each player spun the wheel for a chance to be in the Showcase Showdown.

Residents showcased ‘phenomenal’ talents PPH Independent Living residents shared their musical talent. Jim (left) played the trumpet, Bernadette and Lawrence (center) performed a song, and Audrey (right) sang as part of the talent show, which aired on the community’s in-house TV channels in September.

Cornhole Residents enjoyed many games of cornhole, thanks to Ron and Jean Pleis, longtime friends of PPH. The Pleises donated two beautiful cornhole boards marked with the PPH logo! Residents such as Mary (left) and Elaine (right) have enjoyed playing outside in our courtyard.

L’shanah Tovah! Our Jewish residents received challah and cake for Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah, which means “head of the year,” is the Jewish New Year. Our Jewish residents also observed Yom Kippur, a day of atonement and repentance. A service was shown on PPH TV.

PPH TV kept residents active, connected, and informed Despite restrictions, PPH was able to bring activities to residents’ living rooms.

APPRECIATING OUR HEALTHCARE HEROES

Staff representatives from each department displayed their posters of gratitude given to them by residents in honor of MLK Day of Service.

MLK Day of Service A group of residents gathered in the Social Hall for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, a day that honors and celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The posters and an accompanying poem in the style of Dr. Seuss, written by Independent Living resident Marge, were presented to each department as a display of gratitude for the quality care and service provided by staff. OUR IMPACT

PPH Gratitude Parade PPH held a Parade of Gratitude in May 2020. Staff walked around campus as residents cheered from the lobby areas, windows, and balconies. Many residents decorated their windows and banged pots and pans as staff from various departments walked by. The staff at PPH were appreciative of this amazing display of gratitude and love.

Elaine and Marlene, who moved into PPH last summer, kept busy during the pandemic by playing Rummikub on their balcony, bird-watching, and watching TV and movies on Netflix. They both expressed how much they have enjoyed their time living at PPH, and said they are even more certain now about their decision to move here, noting how caring and comforting residents and staff have been since they moved in.

PPH Auxiliary is ‘Udderly Amazing’ The PPH Auxiliary made various donations over the past year to assist residents and staff. Udderly Smooth hand creams were distributed to every staff member with a personal note — many of whom are dealing with dry hands from all of the soap and hand sanitizer. It’s just one example of the Auxiliary’s countless acts of kindness.

Employee Appreciation PPH’s Human Resources team organized a special Employee Appreciation boxed lunch for a different department each month in 2020. October’s lunches were given to Dining Services staff, instead of having the dining team prepare their own well-deserved treat. The Human Resources team passed out lunches to the Dining Services Department.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

E

ach year, during Founders’ Day, one resident from each level of care is chosen as PPH Resident of the Year. The distinction recognizes a resident who contributes to the well-being of the PPH community; possesses a positive attitude, determination, and perseverance; offers constructive feedback in an appropriate and considerate manner; is a good neighbor and is respectful to other residents. The award is named in honor of former residents who demonstrated exemplary commitment to the PPH mission and values. Due to COVID restrictions, PPH was unable to hold its annual Founders’ Day ceremony in the Social Hall. But, as with many events since March 2020, PPH brought Founders’ Day to residents’ living rooms through a virtual event that aired on PPH TV throughout December.

Independent Living Resident of the Year Director of Social Services Lisa Rubin-Wallack announced Lawndale Manor resident Patricia Coyne (left) as The Reggie and Betty Beauchamp Independent Living Resident of the Year. Patricia’s family and friends all expressed admiration for her dedication to PPH, the PPH Auxiliary, and the various other projects she is involved with — not only inside PPH, but outside the community as well. “The kind words of staff and my family — so beautifully presented — were touching and encouraging,” Patricia said. “I am grateful for the many opportunities for, and rewards of, engaging and serving here at PPH.”

Personal Care Resident of the Year Vice President of Residential Living & Personal Care Mary Ann Parisse announced Hilda Gordon (right) as The Gertrude Corley Personal Care Resident of the Year. “She has been a dear and welcoming presence, especially to all of the Personal Care residents,” Mary Ann said. “Even after the death of her beloved husband [Max] just one year ago, she continues to be a positive ray of sunshine, helping and supporting new residents as they settle in.”

Pathways Resident of the Year Associate Director of Social Services Marge Felix announced Ted Cherrington (left) as The Carmela Heine Pathways Resident of the Year. “He is always willing to help fellow residents out on the fourth floor of Pathways during crafts and is extremely thoughtful,” Marge said. Ted participates in various activities in Pathways and has been a volunteer at the ACE Center. “I was so surprised to receive the award and so happy to see all my family on [PPH] TV congratulating me,” Ted said. “It was an unbelievable moment.” PPHFAMILY.ORG • 17

PPH President’s Award The President’s Award recognizes a staff member who demonstrates PPH’s core values and provides residents with quality care and exceptional customer service. This winner is selected by PPH Leadership from a pool of candidates that includes employees who have received a Guardian Angel designation or were awarded employee of the month. The 2020 President’s Award recipient, announced on Founders’ Day, is Pathways nurse Luinegat Destin. Luinegat was designated a PPH Guardian Angel by Independent Living resident Pastor Ken Smith in May 2018. After a stroke a few years ago, Pastor Ken rehabbed in Pathways. He said the circumstances had him in a state of depression, but Luinegat helped lift his spirits during the recovery process. “I call her an angel of mercy,” he said. “That makes me feel great,” Luinegat said of winning the award. Luinegat noted the importance of quality care, respect, and dignity when caring for residents.

OUR IMPACT

PPH welcomes new CFO & Vice President of Finance Christina Knapp succeeded John Dubyk as CFO & Vice President of Finance. Christina completed the Larry Minnix Leadership Academy, a program from LeadingAge that enhances the leadership skills of nonprofit leaders within the LeadingAge community in October 2020. Fostering her leadership qualities has helped her take on the challenges that COVID-19 has brought. She also mentions that people have stepped up all around, whether it is lending a helping hand, decorating a window, or painting one of the many rocks that have been found around PPH's campus. As for her time so far at PPH, she felt welcome almost immediately. “Within a few days, I felt like I had already been here for a long time,” she said. Christina hopes to bring new, innovative ideas to PPH. With her previous audit experience, she will utilize what she learned from the successes of other senior living communities.

OUR PRIORITIES

TOMORROW YESTERDAY W

e’re setting ambitious goals, planning innovative projects, and launching campus-wide transformations. Because 2020 wasn’t an end, but a new beginning.

OUR PRIORITIES

PPH, LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

A

s PPH rose to the challenges that were presented in 2020, it became clear that the time to reinvent and reimagine the community was imminent. From PPH’s humble roots of providing food and shelter to its aging parishioners, to the 21st century and beyond, planning for the future is critical to remaining a leader in the senior living industry. Today’s seniors are looking for more than safety, security, and care. High-end amenities, health and wellness opportunities, choice, superior dining experiences, smart-home technology, and an inclusive and environmentally conscious community are just some of the expectations of current and future residents. As PPH moves through the master planning process, the needs and expectations of the current market, as well as our local competitors, will help to shape the direction of the community moving forward.

Possible master plan projects include: • Larger Personal Care suites. • Enhanced dining venues. • An increased number of two-bedroom apartments in Independent Living. • Enhanced residential lounges and common spaces. • Skilled nursing specialty care.

The Strengthening Connections campaign kick-started the campuswide Wi-Fi project, a necessary improvement to the community’s technology infrastructure. Once completed, this project will support new telehealth software as well as the ability for residents to virtually connect to their loved ones seamlessly. It will truly be a foundation from which we can build a stronger, safer community. In looking to the future, we conducted a market and competitive analysis to lay the groundwork for a master plan. PPH’s Visionary Committee of the Board of Directors will be instrumental in utilizing this information as we look to identify the priorities for the upcoming master plan.

SUCCESSES SETBACKS I

n the turbulence of 2020, we’ve found stability. Out of uncertainty, we’re forging security. And in darkness, we’re turning on the light.

24 • 2020 PPH ANNUAL REPORT

OUR FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

OUR FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

T

he challenges of COVID-19 have been especially difficult for wellbeing in the aging services industry finances. We are grateful that, despite the struggles caused by COVID-19, we’re in a strong financial position as our leadership helps finalize our five-year master plan. In summary, PPH’s 2020 financial statements reflect total assets of $56.1 million, including $27.1 million in investments, total liabilities of $26.7 million, and total net assets of $29.4 million. Although the year resulted in an operating loss of $277,820 (a direct result of the COVID-19 challenges), the positive market helped produce an increase of $362,423 in net assets. With the impact that COVID-19 had on the aging services sector, we thought it would be helpful to share how the pandemic also affected PPH from a financial perspective. The financial areas most impacted by COVID-19 in 2020 included our census numbers, the rising costs and difficulty of securing PPE, staffing, and lastly, the unknown. • Census in our skilled nursing and rehabilitation center was hardest hit. Regulations set forth by the Department of Health (DOH) led to temporary closures to new nursing admissions, other than current PPH residents, during the year. The census for the month of December 2020 compared to the month of December 2019 had a decrease of nearly 34%. The decrease in census significantly reduced resident service revenue, which we rely on to maintain a balanced budget. Personal Care census dropped 12% in December 2020 compared to December 2019. And while Independent Living was least affected, many prospective residents were unable to make the move to PPH during such a turbulent time. The attractive all-in-one style senior living community with countless services and amenities and professional

caring staff all helped maintain a community occupancy in-line with the national average for nonprofit CCRC’s, according to NIC Map data. • Early in the pandemic, obtaining personal protective equipment (PPE) was very difficult. While the ability to secure PPE has since improved, we are still paying a premium for many items purchased through new or different suppliers to ensure our staff and residents are protected. • Staffing has been a major struggle. The aging services sector was already experiencing staffing shortages as a major challenge. The pandemic further intensified this. Many staff were required to quarantine or were unable to work for other pandemic-related reasons, while the number of staff needed to care for residents, especially in high-risk areas, increased. Overtime and hazard pay helped pay our healthcare heroes during this crisis and fulfill our mission of providing quality care. Though the year 2020 was one of uncertainty, PPH is proud of our current financial stability. Our endowment fund, the low-interest-rate environment, COVID-19 relief grants received as part of the CARES Act, and the prudent fiscal governance from members of our Fiscal Oversight Committee and the Board of Directors all contributed to our positive financial outlook moving forward. We will continue to address all we do proactively, including caring for residents, staff, and finances, as the future of senior living evolves. Please note that our complete 2020 financial statement can be accessed on our website, pphfamily.org, under the About Us section. PPHFAMILY.ORG • 24

OUR DONORS

2020 ANNUAL DONORS

PPH gratefully recognizes our annual donors whose contributions support our areas of greatest need and PPH Benevolent Care.

The PPH Bergdoll Society recognizes donors who have made a cumulative gift of $500 or more in the previous calendar year, as well as donors who have consistently contributed to PPH for 10 or more consecutive years.

PPH Benevolent Care, the heart of our fundraising mission, assists residents who have outlived their financial resources and can no longer afford the cost of their care. The need for Benevolent Care continues to increase each year. In 2020, over $720,000 in benevolent care was given to PPH residents. Our ability to enhance programs and services and improve the well-being of our residents is a growing expense that depends largely on the philanthropic support of our donors.

The PPH Heritage Society was established in 1990. The name reflects our appreciation and admiration for those who had the vision to launch PPH. It is this ongoing vision for the future that marks those who belong to The Heritage Society today. Membership in The Heritage Society recognizes individuals who have made a deferred gift, such as a charitable gift annuity, a bequest through a will, IRA, life insurance, or other gift, which is made by a donor during his or her life and received by PPH after the donor’s death.
