A new chapter guided by strategic partnership

PPH announces new management agreement with EverTrue

On May 22, the PPH Board of Directors announced the decision to engage EverTrue — a faithcentered nonprofit — as its new management company.

"Together, we are embracing a future that is both stable and innovative, one that honors our past while preparing us for the opportunities and challenges ahead.”

This partnership will allow PPH to leverage the expertise, innovation, and best practices of a professional management team — without relinquishing identity or governance.

- Eric Sigel, PPH Board of Directors

“We believe that retaining our independence allows us to preserve the unique culture, values and personalized care that defines the PPH experience,” said Board of Directors Chairperson Eric Sigel in a May 22 letter to

First Lady of PA visits PPH

First Lady of Pennsylvania Lori Shapiro visited PPH on June 23 for a conversation that touched on various aspects of her life.

The conversation — led by PPH resident Marge Sexton in PPH's Social Hall — focused on Lori's childhood, where she learned the core values of ethics, morals and serving others.

"My mom was always volunteering in the community," she said. "I try to set that example for our kids as well."

Lori and Josh, who have been married for 28 years, went on to have four children, currently ranging in ages 14 to 23.

"Josh was my high school sweetheart," she said. "We grew up together in so many ways."

Lori also spoke about her work to ensure that women's menstrual supplies are provided in schools and state parks.

Juneteenth Celebration

PPH held its annual Juneteenth celebration, filled with history, trivia, games, food, music and more!

• The day kicked off a presentation — "The History of Juneteenth" — led by Kathy AndrewsWilliams. Kathy's talk highlighted the origins of the holiday, that date back to the emancipation of slaves in 1865, its evolving celebrations through the years, and its official recognition as a US federal holiday in 2021.

• Residents and guests played cornhole, Connect 4, ladderball and more in the Social Hall.

• A special Juneteenth meal — courtesy of our Culinary Services team, was served — with options consisting of southern fried catfish, baked mac and cheese, cajun dirty rice and much more!

• Philadelphia music legend Robert Kenyatta gave a live demonstration of his percussion instruments, and brought in the audience for participation!

It was a fun day for all who attended the activities, lunch and performance!

"We've made so much progress in this area," Shapiro said. "And it's young people who are really pushing it."

She hopes to continue to make a difference and positive change, little by little.

Afterwards, Lori graciously stayed for a meet and greet with many PPH residents.

Senior Director of Resident Engagement takes next step as leader

PPH is proud to celebrate Marge Felix, PPH's Senior Director of Resident Engagement, on her recent graduation from LeadingAge PA's Fellows in Leadership program!

In June, Marge was welcomed into the program's Alumni Council at LeadingAge PA's 2025 Annual Conference in Hershey, Pa.

"The Fellows in Leadership has given me more self-awareness into my leaderships style and abilities," Marge said. "This is a great foundation for my career."

Over the course of the nine-month program, Marge had the opportunity to engage with other aging services professionals across Pennsylvania. Sessions were held at LeadingAge PA offices in Mechanicsburg, Pa. and other senior living communities throughout the state, and consisted of communication and behavioral

The management partnership between PPH and EverTrue is a three-year agreement. As more life plan communities merge, affiliate or partner with management companies, PPH — with the guidance of EverTrue — will explore its options over the course of the agreement. These include a continued management partnership, an affiliation, or PPH deciding to remain a single-site community.

PPH has engaged in a management partnership with FellowshipLIFE since July 2024. The Board of Directors and leadership thank current Interim Executive Director Kelli Mills and FellowshipLIFE’s President & CEO Brian Lawrence for their organizational leadership, collaboration and hard work during the due diligence period of this process.

“After careful consideration, we have

assessments, team-building exercises, and problem-solving scenarios.

Marge is eager to apply the lessons learned and the knowledge gained, particularly in areas of strength.

"I learned that it is OK for me to show vulnerability and compassion," she said.

She hopes to stay connected with her classmates and instructors.

"I enjoyed getting to know everyone," she said. "From nearby to those out in Pittsburgh, everyone was supportive throughout."

Marge began working at PPH in 1993 in the Social Services department. She later went on to obtain her Master of Social Work degree from Temple University in 2002.

Now, as Senior Director of Resident Engagement, Marge works alongside Social Services, Wellness, Pastoral Services, Recreation Therapy

and Life Enrichment.

According to LeadingAgePA.org, the "Fellows in Leadership equips leaders with actionable strategies and practical knowledge to help solve real-world challenges in member communities. The program will assist new and experienced leaders to define, clarify, and practice the skills needed to lead aging services organizations into the future. Sessions are taught by experienced industry leaders, and participants are coached by esteemed leaders from member communities."

LeadingAge PA’s mission is to advance the evolving continuum of aging services in Pennsylvania. They represent over 380 nonprofit senior living communities and organizations by providing education and events, advocacy for Pennsylvania’s seniors, resources for members and workforce initiatives.

made the decision not to pursue affiliation with a larger senior living organization currently,” said Sigel.

What Does This Mean for PPH?

• Enhanced Operational Excellence: EverTrue will work closely with PPH leadership to optimize systems, staffing, and services, bringing new tools and insights that strengthen the organization from the inside out.

• Focus on Mission: By outsourcing day-to-day operational complexities, the PPH Board and Executive Team can place greater focus on long-term strategy, resident engagement, and mission fulfillment.

• Continued Independence: PPH will remain an independent, non-profit

community. Decisions will continue to be guided by the PPH Board and informed by the voices of residents, team members, and stakeholders.

• Quality and Compassion Remain at the Core: Residents and their families will continue to receive the same high-quality, compassionate care that has been PPH’s hallmark for over 135 years. This partnership simply helps us do that even better.

“As we turn this exciting page, we are filled with gratitude — for our residents, team members, families, and supporters whose trust inspires every step we take. Together, we are embracing a future that is both stable and innovative, one that honors our past while preparing us for the opportunities and challenges ahead,” said Sigel. Saluting Service and Symbol

Celebrating the 'Grand Ol' Flag'

PPH held a Flag Day ceremony on June 14, which marked the 250th Birthday of the United States Army.

Veteran Harry Morrissy led the "Pledge of Allegiance;" Carol Feeley and PPH Choir performed a few patriotic oldies but goodies — "You’re a Grand Old Flag" and "America the Beautiful;" and Director of Community Relations Bill Conaway presented Flag Day trivia. Fun Fact: June Wikoff (pictured front row, fourth from right) is a descendant of Betsy Ross, who is credited with sewing the second official US flag.

Employee of the Month: Sherley Laurenceau

PPH held a Flag Raising ceremony on Memorial Day, May 26, to honor those who died defending our freedom. The program began with Army veteran Audrey Alston leading the group in singing the National Anthem. Burholme Troop 160 conducted the Flag Raising as one of the Scouts played "Taps." PPH Chaplain & Air Force Veteran Pastor Earl Scott delivered remarks, Carol Feeley read the poem “In Flanders Fields," and Anna Marie Bresnan placed a wreath to honor all fallen service members. Audrey concluded the ceremony with the song “Blades of Grass and Pure White Stones."

Congratulations go out to Sherley Laurenceau on being named the July Employee of the Month! Sherley maintains a positive, kind and supportive attitude, even in challenging situations. She offers assistance in any situation and helps anyone in need. Thank you Sherley, for all that you do!

Interested in joining? Cranium Crunch is held every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Room.

Pianist Emma Hefner performed in the PPH Social Hall on June 2. Emma's program consisted of music from Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and more, much to the delight of our residents. Emma is pictured with her family, including her aunt Cathy, a PPH resident, who is proud of her niece's talents and accomplishments.

Rhawnhurst Elementary and PPH partnership continues

Rhawnhurst Elementary Kindergarten students — with the help of PPH residents, Auxiliary members and chaperones — constructed, decorated and painted wooden birdhouses. After munching on hot dogs for lunch, the students enjoyed a walk through campus and a visit to the Koi pond! For many years, PPH resident-volunteers have served as coaches for Ms. Collins' Kindergarten class, and the students visit PPH throughout the school year. Our residents look forward to meeting the new Kindergarten students in the fall!

Your Garden Growing?

Dear PPH Family and Friends,

As I stood and admired my beautiful garden, after a weekend of gardening, I was quite pleased with myself. My tomato plants spaced evenly in a straight row have bright marigolds planted nearby to keep the pesty critters and bugs away. A perfect circle of mulch surrounds each plant to help maintain the moisture and keep weeds at bay. But the flower beds are what I take immense joy in planning and planting. While the peonies have already bloomed, the perennial daylilies, hydrangea, shasta-daisies, and hostas are getting ready to burst forth in an array of colors. Four o’clock bushes and roses add to the beauty. Zinnias, giant marigolds, begonias, and portulaca flowers add variety and color, attracting butterflies. Whimsical metal ornaments placed among the flowers and in patio pots catch the eye of those passing by and add a finished touch to my peace filled garden.

your life and allowed weeds to grow and choke life out of your once welltended garden?

The destructive weeds of life can be subtle and look different for all of us. It takes hard work and determination to identify and eliminate weeds from our life; they are tenacious and keep trying to come back. Remain vigil! Just as we prune back trees and plants to encourage healthy growth, at times we need to prune away the negative influences and behaviors that impact our lives and allow the weeds to grow.

Now I would like to tell you that my perfectly manicured garden remains looking beautiful and healthy all summer long. But the truth is, regardless of my best intentions, some years the weeds, critters, bugs, and extreme heat get the best of my garden and me. Sometimes, life just gets busy, and it is easy to lose focus making it easy for the weeds to win.

In a manner of speaking, in our own garden of life, there are weeds, critters, bugs and distractions that cause us to lose control of our spiritual garden. Unwanted guests often invade the peace and tranquility of our soul. Negative behaviors and events can choke-out and prevent the good and positive attributes in us from growing and spreading joy, love, and beauty to others and within. Perhaps, you have neglected to seek proper nourishment and water for your garden; your soul feels spiritually dead. Have you neglected what was once beautiful in

The “gossip” weed can quickly spread like the seeds on the white puff of a dandelion destroying friendships. “Lying,” “envy,” and “jealousy” like the blue flower of the Chicory may seem harmless but will leave a bitter taste in the long run. “Meddling” and giving “unwanted advice” like the thistle plant, covered with prickles will no doubt leave you itching and stinging, wishing you had remained silent. Weeds in our life cause destruction of our souls, rob our minds of peace, stunt personal growth, and damage relationships with others and our Creator. Is it time to do some weeding in your garden? Is it time to restore the beauty that brings you personal peace and tranquility and work at replacing the weeds in your garden with flowers of patience, kindness, gentleness, and love. You, and all that pass you by, will see and enjoy your beautiful garden.

I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no sense. I saw that it was overgrown with nettles, it was covered with weeds, and its walls were broken down. Proverbs 24:30-31
