SHOW AND TELL rying to pin down the very roots of our current tuner car culture is no easy task.

From its initial rise in popularity through the 90s to the pop culture explosion of the new millennium, PAS Magazine has always been there to capture it first hand.

Back then our healthy car enthusiast population grew in record numbers around the globe, as did the sales of aftermarket parts and the countless events we all flocked to attend. The demand for aftermarket performance, styling and electronics went through the roof at the speed of light, with many companies and show promoters popping up overnight to capitalize on the hot tuner market craze. But, as we all know nothing lasts forever and things naturally evolve. Lately I’ve been pondering the endless speculation (good or bad) about our beloved enthusiast culture, passionate lifestyle and the many automotive events that bring us all together.

Although most of the automotive industry is facing tough times (stop with the doom and gloom already!), nearly everyone I’ve spoken with agrees the automotive enthusiast scene is still alive and well. What I’ve noticed over the past year is how much our scene has certainly changed and become more diverse than ever.

It’s clear the tuner market has cooled down compared to the record setting sales at its height of popularity, though our scene still continues to enjoy some steady overall growth. However, this growth is occurring in different areas than its primary explosion, as today’s tuners are not the same OG gearheads who kicked off the sport compact scene years ago.

As our tuning culture continues to mature, our enthusiast scene itself changes just as fast as the cars that are in it. Young tuners are becoming more important than ever, as they’ll soon dictate the future trends and play a much larger role within the aftermarket industry. The first generations of sport compact tuners are now in their 30’s, which means our scene is also maturing. As the scene matures, so does its vehicles and the events that unite us as automotive enthusiasts.

We’ve noticed a rise in the large numbers of high-end luxury and sports cars showing up at shows across the country. Tuner car genetics are no longer limited to budget-friendly pocket-rockets with an H-badge, as OG tuners have graduated and moved onto premium brands they can now afford to own. The guy who used to drool over an engine swapped 240SX has instead set his sights (and pocketbook) on things like the new Nissan GT-R. The numbers of luxury and high end sports cars affixed with aftermarket gear is undeniably growing and it shows. Events like the innovative Hot Import Nights series have embraced the trend with new categories and luxury / exotic themed classes. This is clearly a new direction in automotive tuning and we can’t wait to see more of it at events across the country.

With another car show season nearly in the record books, we thought this issue would mark the perfect time to recap the very best events we’ve attended so far this year. We understand you can’t make it to every car show or trackside to each event out there. Luckily, our always dedicated and often questionable Editorial team has got you covered. SOUNDADVICE Q: Okay, I have been a subscriber to the magazine for a while now, and I think it’s great! I have learned a lot from the articles and reviews, although sometimes some of the specs and stuff are over my head. I’m currently studying music in college, and I want to put a very good sound system in my 2008 VW Jetta. The doors of the Jetta are made to hold a 6-inch speaker, a 4-inch speaker and a tweeter. What do I need to do and what speakers should I use that fit my car to get the best sound?

I will also want to add a subwoofer, but it will go in the trunk obviously. I’m mainly concerned about getting clear and natural sound up front. Thanks in advance.

Darrin C, Winnipeg Manitoba Canada A: Well Darrin, I can’t tell you what brand of speakers to buy, because everyone has different preferences and expectations for what they like. What I can tell you, is there are many good quality brands to choose from. The best way to select the right speakers for you, is to take your favorite CD to the store and ask to listen to it. Find speakers that have the right sound for you, and don’t be swayed by the salesperson’s preferences. If you listen with your own music, it will be much easier for you to compare one to another and find something you like. Now, with your particular car, there is another issue you’ll have to contend with. The engineers who designed those door panels were not exactly concerned with maximum sound quality. In your car, the 6-inch speaker is too far back in the door to be used as a midrange driver, and the 4-inch farther forward is just that, a 4-inch speaker. You have a couple of options here. You can buy a specifically designed 3-way system that uses the 6-inch speaker as a mid bass driver, or you can build your own 3-way system using the 6-inch as a mid bass driver with either an active crossover and separate amp channels, or a passive network on a regular 2 channel amp.

But the method I would recommend the most is neither of those. If it was my car, I’d spend the money to have a good custom set of door panels constructed that allow you to use a more conventional 2-way 6-inch and tweeter system, move the 6-inch speaker to the front part of the door, and do away with the 4-inch speaker completely. Fewer drivers will provide better sonics and there are a lot more choices available. Either way, the Jetta is a bit of a challenge when it comes to getting really good sound up front, but it’s certainly not impossible. Ask local audio dealers / installers if they’ve done Jettas like this before, and gauge their professionalism and ability on their responses. If they have photos of their work, or even better, a Jetta for you to listen to, you’ll have a good idea of what to expect.

Okay, in non techni cal terms, frequency response is a term used to describe a device’s abi lity to output a range of frequen cies within a given amount of output level. So it’s actually both, lou dness, and the low and hig h limits of a signal. However, as with mo st specs, you have to know at what level the frequency limits were me asured at or the spec is me aningless.

“Hz” is an abbreviation of Her tz, which simply means “cy cles per second”. This makes it a uni t of frequency. Very low num bers (2 digits) are associated with bas s and subwoofers. Very hig h numbers (5 digits) are very high frequen cies, most often reproduce d by tweeters.

The term kHz is an abbreviati on for kilohertz, or thousands of hertz.

A number in front of the kHz suffix means that many tho usands of hertz. For example, 17kHz is just easier to write than 17, 000Hz. As an example of a meaningf ul frequency response specific ation, a good full range amplifier might have a frequency res ponse spec that looks like this: 10Hz – 35kHz, +0dB / -3dB. What this means, is that within a 3dB window , the amplifier will output a range of frequencies from 10Hz to 35k Hz. The high and low frequen cy values in that spec are measured when the amp reaches -3d B. This is a pretty common way to spe c frequency response. Withou t the -3dB info, we’d have no way of kno wing the levels those frequen cies were measured at, and so the wh ole spec is useless.

A human with perfect hearing can hear a range of frequen cies from about 20Hz to 20kHz. We use dB (decibels) as uni ts of output level (sometimes called am plitude) because they allow us to make comparisons easily at differe nt output levels.

Almost every audio related product has a frequency res ponse specification, so it’s importa nt to understand what it me ans. I hope this helps you understand the term, and it was not a stupid question!

hen I bought my first GPS navigation system, most people considered it a pure luxury or toy, and not a useful everyday tool. My original GPS was over a thousand bucks, and only had a limited display and 2D graphics. What was once considered a necessity only by serious travelers, long haul truckers and off road enthusiasts, has now quickly become part of everyday life. Today’s GPS devices are smaller, smarter, and easier to use than ever. This helps explain why over the last couple of years GPS technology has exploded into more and more mainstream products, and now it seems like everyone considers a personal navigation system both convenient and practical. What arrived in the big brown truck a few days later was a JL 15W0v2 woofer in a nicely made sealed enclosure. Now I know 15’s aren’t usually everyone’s first choice, but what a lot of folks might not know, is that a high quality, modern 15-inch woofer like this JL, no longer requires an enclosure the size of a big doghouse. The sealed enclosure that the woofer came in measures 16.25 x18 x15.75 inches.

That makes it fit easily into virtually any SUV or car trunk. You may even get a pair of them in there!

FEATURES The 15W0v2 woofer incorporates some innovative technology. By elevating the frame above the top plate of the speakers motor, JL’s patented Elevated Frame Cooling provides improved airflow between the bottom surface of the speakers frame and the top surface of the motors top plate. The result of this technology is cooler voice coil temps and a cooler motor assembly, thereby improving thermal power handling, and increasing reliability. And the technology continues, with the application of JL Audio’s DMA (Dynamic Motor Analysis) system. This system is a derivative of complex finite element analysis, where the true behavior of the moving components of the loudspeaker are analyzed under a wide variety of typical operating conditions. As a result, the speak-

ers can be designed to provide much more linear behavior, and improved stability under all sorts of conditions. What does that mean to you?

It means that the speaker you buy will sound great, and be dependable.

Cosmetically, the woofer is well finished and looks like it was built by someone paying attention to details. Nice cosmetic touches include a top plastic mounting gasket that does double duty as a grille retainer, and on the bottom side, an injection molded plastic cover trims out the motor assembly. As an example of the attention to detail, the JL woofer comes with a closed cell foam mounting gasket that is pre-applied to the mounting surface of the woofer, ensuring an airtight, buzz free seal if mounted on a hard, flat surface.

Tipping the Cogent scales at just under 16 pounds, the 15W0v2 uses a round stamped steel basket, with the patented elevated frame. The cone material is black “mineral filled polypropylene”, with a traditional JL Audio concave dustcap. The surround is polyester foam, and it is both quite wide and tall, allowing large amounts of excursion travel. The surround is attached to the frame and to the cone with adhesives.

Underneath the cone, you’ll find a poly-cotton progressive type single spider, which is used to locate the 2.6-inch copper voice coil and Kapton former. The voice coil is four layers thick,

JL AUDIO 15W0V2 and is a 4-ohm nominal design. Motivation for the voice coil’s movement comes from a 6.3-inch strontium ferrite ceramic magnet. The woofers bottom plate has been “bumped out”, again in the interests of greater excursion capability.

Speaker connections are accomplished via nickel plated spring-loaded terminals that will accept 8 gauge wire.

LISTENING Since the woofer was already in an enclosure, I simply hooked it up and let it play for a couple of days to make sure it was fully exercised before I listened to it, and made my measurements. It’s not necessary to go through any sort of formal breakin period with this woofer, but I do it in the interest of accurate comments and measurements for my reviews. Under normal use, the woofer will work perfectly out of the box, and automatically break itself in as you use it.

When it came time to do my listening, I deliberately chose some fairly difficult tracks and I made sure I had plenty of amplifier power for the 4 ohm driver. I did some experimenting with crossover points, and while the 15W0v2 worked fine with anything from 50 to 150 Hz, I settled on 100Hz at -24dB per octave. If I only had a -12dB crossover, I probably would have used a bit lower frequency.

I began with one of my all time favorite bass test tracks, “The Planet Krypton”. In this track there is a one-minute thirty-nine second crescendo that goes down to something like 18Hz. If your woofer system has excursion issues, this track will find them for sure. I let ‘er buck at pretty much the full 500 watt power rating, and while I got a phone call from my next door neighbor (they wanted me to play it again) the JL 15W0v2 handled it with nary a complaint. But man, that cone was movin’!

Changing musical gears, I switched over to another really low bass track that a lot of younger bassheads probably don’t know, BTO’s 1973 hit “Not Fragile”. In the beginning of this track Fred Turner lays down a really low bass groove, that’s continued throughout most of the song. The track is pretty telling of a woofers ability to reproduce quick low bass note changes, and once again, the JL woofer sounded superb.

One of the things I noted early on in my listening, was how musical the woofer sounded. It added no mechanical noise of it’s own, and simply reproduced the notes in the music. The output was smooth, and “round” sounding.

I listened to a bunch more classical, blues, and rock tunes, and then I thought it would be interesting to hear how the big 15-inch woofer handled more intricate bass information, like the slapped bass in Rickie Lee Jones’ “Danny’s All Star Joint”, and the amazing work of Jaco Pastorius and Weather Report. In a word… brilliantly. This is an excellent woofer for only $229.95!

Another nice feature of the JL Audio 15W0v2 is the fact that you don’t need a huge amp to run the thing. Just for fun, I connected an averaging meter to the terminals, and monitored the average power levels I used for normal extended listening. After about an hour I was surprised to find that the average power applied was under 25 watts. This means that the 100 to 500 watt recommended amplifier size in the owners manual is dead on, and I would not be afraid to suggest about 200 -300 watts, even for someone who likes it boomin’.

Sensitivity ON THE BENCH The next morning, I removed Nominal Impedance the woofer from the enclosure, and measured the Thiele-Small parameters.

While tolerances of 20% are pretty common for car audio woofers, my real world numbers were almost dead on to their published specifications. This means that the level of quality control is good, and large tolerances between woofers are unlikely. Remember earlier when I mentioned attention to detail?

I also verified the volume of the enclosure before I re-installed the woofer to measure the frequency response and system impedances. The supplied enclosure measured 1.9 cubic feet of internal volume before subtracting the displacement of the woofer.

This translates to only about 1.75 cubic feet of air for the woofer to achieve the type of performance I experienced, which is very good for a high excursion 15-inch subwoofer.

ivin’ Loud with “All the Bass – Half the Space” That was the tag line for the original Kicker SoloBaric subwoofers, and it was pretty true. Back in the 90’s, Kicker figured out a way to get a woofer to perform exceptionally well in small sealed enclosures. These were very popular woofers, as they had great output, sounded good, and took up about half of the space of most of the competitive product at the time. Back in those days, I was working for a competitive brand and the Solo-Baric woofers were the ones to beat! Well, cars certainly haven’t gotten any bigger since then, so this year the folks at Kicker decided it was time to re-visit the concept.

Technology however, has made some progress in the last 20 or so years and the new Kicker Solo Classic subwoofers have taken full advantage of that. Thanks to Ron Burnett, Kickers Sr. Marketing Communications Coordinator, I was fortunate enough to receive a new Kicker S10C woofer for testing.

The bass is deep and smooth, with great definition and serious power handling too. If you have a small space, and you’d like big bass, the folks at your Kicker dealer have the solution.

COSMETICS Starting with only the basic performance premise of the original Solo-Baric series as a guideline, the new Solo Classic woofers are all new, with one piece, fully braced SoloKon cones, stamped steel baskets, radially ribbed rubber surrounds and more. Cosmetics are classic Kicker, the woofer has an aggressive, meaningful appearance, with a low gloss finish to the ribbed cone, and nice textured black powdercoat on the basket and back plate.

With the exception of a tiny bit of adhesive showing around the cone/surround joint, the woofer looks very well finished.

FEATURES The SoloKon cone is ribbed for added strength and rigidity, without increased mass. It’s attached to the ribbed rubber surround with not only the usual adhesives, but it also has two rows of stitching for added strength and reliability under high power conditions. The rugged long-throw surround itself is a bit unusual, utilizing twenty radially

placed ribs to improve linear cone motion.

Underneath the cone, a Nomex spider provides mechanical control to the suspension, as well as centering for the 2-inch diameter, 4 ohm, high temperature dual copper voice coils. The tinsel leads connecting the four main speaker wire spring terminals, are woven into the spider to prevent lead slap and improve reliability. Even the attachment of the 10 gauge terminals to the basket has received special attention, with a hard epoxy type substance preventing accidental terminal loosening. A large 6.1-inch double stacked ferrite magnet assembly provides the magnetic motor force, and is protected with a black molded rubber “boot”.

LISTENING Having some experience with Kicker woofers, and knowing they recommend breaking in the woofers before beginning serious evaluations, I made sure the

KICKER SOLO CLASSIC S10C woofer was fully broken-in before I did any listening or testing. The break-in of any woofer can be accomplished simply by a few hours of enthusiastic use, or even a couple of weeks of low to moderate listening. Because I don’t have that kind of time, I used a 10Hz sinewave, at about 40 watts, with the woofer in a free-air environment. I chose 10Hz, because as I’m sure you know, with every halving of frequency, you increase cone excursion by 4 times, without increasing power. Very low frequencies make the woofer move a lot, which in turn allows the suspension of the woofer to loosen up, and normalize. It was during this very low frequency break-in that I noticed, this woofer has some serious excursion capabilities!

After I was satisfied the break-in was complete, and while I was waiting for the woofer to completely cool, I installed it in a 0.65 cubic foot sealed enclosure, per the suggestion in the owners manual. Read it. Learn it.

Know it. Live it!

Also in the manual was a very handy “cut list” in case you wanted to build your own enclosure. The Kicker S10C’s Thiele-Small parameters are also in the manual for those of you who like to play with computerized enclosure designs. But as I found out, there’s no need for tweaking box volume. Save the time, and just use the Kicker recommended volume.

My listening began with some old school, favorite bass tracks from Rush, Deep Purple and The Who. Listening to the late, great John Entwistle, who to me was the Jimi Hendrix of bass guitar, and his mind bending, giant bass lines was a real treat, and I began to understand Kicker had done it again. Switching sonic gears, I loaded up some big band tunes with plucked string bass, and drums that were recorded acoustically with coincident stereo microphones. Being something of a drummer myself, I like to use these tracks to see if the woofer system actually sounds like real drums, and the Solo Classic definitely did.

The Solo Classic’s definition of the detail in this type of music was very good, and as always with really good gear, you just want to keep turning it up!

If heavy bass is your thing, the Solo Classic won’t disappoint there either. I played several Bass heavy tracks from 50 Cent, Nelly, Pussycat Dolls, Nine Inch Nails, and the woofer handled them with ease, right up to, and occasionally over the 450 watt power rating!

I was really pleased with the amount of output as well, the single 10-inch woofer had no problem filling my very large listening room with smooth, clean “round” sounding bass.

The woofer is very musical, and it has quite a bit more output than I’m use to from a single 10-inch speaker, particularly when it’s in such a small box.

ON THE BENCH When my listening session was finally over, (I kept doing the “just one more song” thing for about an hour) I moved the woofer to the lab to “Get the numbers out of it.”

Once again first allowing it to cool and normalize, I began by measuring the actual Thiele-Small parameters. As most of you are aware, there is a significant amount of variance or “tolerance” on woofer specs.

I’m pleased to report the sample I tested came out within a few percent of all the published numbers.

I then mounted the woofer back in the enclosure, and measured the actual system impedance, and the SPL curve. It’s always a relief to have a product measure pretty much exactly the way it sounded, and that was the case for the S10C.

here’s an old saying that you can never have too much of a good thing. And certainly when it comes to high output woofers that require only tiny amounts of space, the adage holds true. Doing their part to bring big bass to small spaces, the product development team at MB Quart, have recently released a new shallow-mount 12-inch woofer. Labeled the RLP304, the woofer is designed for high performance applications, and with a 300 watt rating, higher than average power levels for a typical shallow woofer application.

FEATURES The new MB Quart RLP304 is a very shallow woofer, with a physical mounting depth of only about 3 inches. Allowing an inch or so of air behind the woofer so it can breathe out its vented pole piece, you still have a woofer than can be mounted in only 4 inches of depth.

Designed to work well in enclosures as small as 0.5 cubic feet, the construction of the MB Quart RLP304 woofer is all business. Beginning with a double-rolled stamped steel basket, the shallow design uses a powerful yet compact neodymium motor to provide the magnetic energy required to produce powerful, deep bass. A three inch diameter glass-fiber voice coil former carries a pair of 4 ohm copper wound voice coils. The assembly uses a reinforcement neck made of aluminum to provide

maximum durability under extreme conditions.

The voice coil assembly is then connected to an injection molded polypropylene flat piston cone, which in turn is connected to the basket by a tall foam surround to maximize excursion capability.

Beneath the cone is a chrome plated spider landing which provides a bit of flash and bling to the cosmetics, while retaining the outer edge of the single flat poly-cotton spider. The spider design incorporates woven tinsel leads that connect to nickel plated spring type wire terminals. The terminals are very sturdy, and will accommodate 8 gauge cables.

The MB Quart RLP304 uses 8 screws to mount it, and comes with a sturdy good looking trim ring that snaps on over the screws and provides a smooth, trimmed out appearance.

I did find it a little odd however, that MB Quart chose to measure the woofer with the 4 ohm coils in series resulting in an 8 ohm nominal impedance. I made my measurements with the coils in parallel, simply because I believe that’s how 99% of these woofers will be connected in the real world. I measured the impedance curve of the system in the 0.6ft3 enclosure, and as expected, it was never below about 2.5 ohms with the woofers coils in parallel. The in box resonant frequency was almost exactly 50Hz, which means the recommended enclosure size was appropriate.

CONCLUSION The MB Quart RLP304 shallow 12-inch woofer is an excellent choice where musi cality and relatively high power handling are required, and enclosure space is limited. The woof er sounds very good, and with the ability to handle 300 watts, it will also provide you with a surprising amou nt of output.

And because it works well in very smal l spaces, you may just be able to fit a pair of them… Once again proving that you really can’t have too much of a good thing!

ver the years I’ve probably installed or worked on literally thousands of car audio systems. One of my specialties when I was a professional installer, was the prevention of noise or more often the removal of noise from someone else’s install. During most of those years I often pondered, sometimes quite verbally (and with great disdain), the choice of our industry to use RCA cables as signal conductors. From a pure physics point of view, it simply doesn’t make sense. You take a very low level, complex AC signal (your music) and run it over a very electrically noisy vehicle chassis. In a coaxial cable in many cases, which by nature will make noise problems worse! Add to that, the fact that the connectors typically don’t lock together, and then we install them in a vehicle, subject to all kinds of vibration and changes in temperature. Quite amazing when you think about it. An RCA type cable is actually about the worst possible choice we could have made, but, here we are.

It’s always fairly astonishing to me that we are able to get things as quiet as we do. Suffice to say, your choice if interconnect cable can make a big difference in whether or not you end up with intermittent signal, signal degradation, or the dreaded “audible tachometer” alternator noise or not.

I suppose it’s pretty obvious by now that a properly constructed cable is fairly important, and so are the cable ends. A good tight fit, and consistency in sizing are important to make sure all the signal gets to its intended destination, the inputs of your amplifiers! This is where a good quality cable can really make a difference, and it just so happens the experts at Stinger Electronics recently sent over a few samples their latest and greatest HPM Level 3 interconnects.

The first kit is called an Stinger SHI2317, and it’s a 17 foot long pair of interconnects. What makes this special are the great features that

First, the cable ends themselves are sturdy and made of CNC machined aluminum. Electrical contact areas are coated with what Stinger calls Shoc-Krome, to provide good electrical conductivity and resist corrosion. The outer shell of the RCA ends are tapered and split, and can be locked into place my tightening the blue anodized barrel, which has thoughtfully been given a tightly fitting rubber grip so you can get a good hold on it. The center pin of the connector is also split, which helps to optimize the contact, and provide a good solid connection.

The cable is double shielded, and of the twisted pair variety, which has been proven to reduce radiated noise transmission, providing the twists are tight enough. The cables are also directional, which refers to the fact that the “source” end of the cable has the RCA shell connected to the cable shielding, and it “floats” on the other end.

This technique can be helpful in reducing noise caused by ground loops, or poor impedance matching of components. The pair of cables merge into a single larger diameter jacket, which is covered in a braided open mesh material. This mesh material not only provides some protection to the cable, but it also is easier to install, because it prevents the jacket material from getting hung up on things during the installation. The cables have a very nice fit and finish, and Stinger assures us that the entire cable has no internal solder connections, and is pure oxygen free copper.

The second kit ( Stinger SHI6312) is very

similar, except there are 3 pairs (6 individual cables) all included in a single cable run. The CNC machined ends are silver this time, and slightly different in appearance, but still have all the same features as the aforementioned cable.

Cable identification is made possible via small colored O-rings that are found just behind each RCA shell. The cable itself follows the double shielded, directional, twisted pair design as before, and also includes the protective and helpful mesh covering.

These Stinger HPM Level 3 kits are truly high quality cables that will do justice to even the most demanding applications. The stereo pair in the 17 foot length sells for under 50 bucks, and the full 6 conductor cable in a 12 foot length can be purchased for about $80.00. Pick some up, and you’ll know you’ve done your best in ensuring the integrity of your signal transfer.

hen Ken Gushi stormed onto the scene 5 years ago he was only 17.

The young Japanese American was drifting before he had a license. Gushi was the subject of every conversation season after season because everyone had high expectations for him. Now slightly older and much wiser, he is back but in a new platform – a Scion tC. Not just any Scion tC obviously but one converted to rear wheel drive featuring extensive chassis modifications. His age has never been a factor before but his success is going to come at a price – a price Gushi is more than willing to pay.

Gushi has been paying his dues, first in a 240, then in a Mustang. His Scion is slightly unorthodox and has been in development

for a while. Considering this chassis was never designed for anything like this, there were some growing pains. However, now that the tC mystery is decoded, there is actually another one in the series piloted by Tanner Foust for Rockstar. With a custom drivetrain and chassis modifications, Gushi’s Scion is repainted, retuned and out on the Formula D circuit to cause a ruckus.

At the heart of the project is an engine adored by Toyota-philes but relatively unknown to everyone else. The Toyota BEAMS (Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System.) engine, is an inline-4 manufactured

GUN 4th generation 3S-GE is from 1998 complete with a dual VVTi variable timing system that pumped out 207hp @7600rpm. Although it found its way into a few JDM models, the most recognizable was the Altezza RS200 (the Lexus IS300).

However, that was the stock BEAMS mill. Gushi’s is barely recognizable. With a 2.2L TODA stroker kit, the car makes much more down low and is eager to spool up the menacing turbo. A Garrett GT3037 turbo has been mounted up to a custom turbo manifold of intertwined stainless steel tubing. An HKS Wastegate regulates the boost before dumping hot gases into a custom stainless 3-inch downpipe and exhaust. On the chill side, compressed air heads to a custom front mount intercooler before slamming the BDL 72mm throttle body. Fuel is pulled through a pair of Bosch in-line pumps before meeting an SX fuel pressure regulator and billet fuel line for distribution. The high octane sprays out a quartet of Bosch 850cc injectors into the lower compression chambers that sometimes see a shot of nitrous.

Since the tC is a front-wheel drive platform, there were no limits to what components could be used to put the power down. The transmission was pulled and tossed in the scrap bin and a custom tunnel was created for a 4-speed G-Force GSR transmission. A custom-spec Tilton triple clutch was added to keep the torque under control for the 2.2L. A custom aluminum driveshaft was crafted to connect the motor to the diff housing. A 2-way KAAZ LSD was fitted up in the pot for some serious sideways action.

veryone has a weakness and even the toughest street fighter has a weak spot if you can strike the right pressure point. Tony Nazzal’s 350Z has gone through many iterations over the years, to eliminate all the weak spots he had identified.

When I first saw this Z33, it had next to nothing in the power-adder department but you could see that Nazzal was going to take to strengthen it and build a prize fighter. That was around five years ago and Nazzal has continued to build his creation into something rarely seen in the Spo-Com world. This time around, Nazzal went through the painstaking process of tearing the shell apart and fitting it with a widebody to set off the appearance of the Z like nothing we’d seen before. He turned to widebody specialists, BRS Autodesign

After it was slightly customized, the hood was modified to clear the Eaton-style blower and fitted with Aerocatch hood-pins. The body was then shot in several layers of Dupont Chromallusion paint called Absolute Purpeen.

“The trademark of my project has always been the Chameleon paint scheme,” states Nazzal. The roof was then sprayed in gloss black and the rear deck was fitted with an APR GT500 carbon fiber wing. Nazzal added some smaller accents like carbon fiber B-pillars and airbrushed “Z” and “Nissan” logos.

From there the attention turned back to the motor. “The car was being ranked in the highest classes at car shows and did well holding its own against completely done and insane widebody JDM themed vehicles, without a widebody or crazy motor,” admits Nazzal. However, it was time for Nazzal to start paying his dues under the hood. The jam was to be made with a supercharger and when it came to pull the trigger on one, Nazzal went with the Nissan experts at Stillen. This stage 4 kit has dual fuel maps for both pump and 100 octane, and keeps it fat since the internals are stock. A 7th injector has been added and the fuel is jammed in with a Walbro 255lph pump providing the stream of fuel.

The compressed air heads into an air-to-liquid chiller before it heads to the chambers. The spent gases are directed out of DC Sports headers and into a Motordyne single exit titanium exhaust.

With the bump in power, the Z needed some suspension and brakes to harness it. A set of K&W Variant 3 coilovers were added to the project for advanced adjustability. Then Cusco rear upper control arms were bolted up along with Stillen adjustable sway bars and front strut bar. Nazzal 60

The audio install includes some of the best gear on the market. The first order of business was to source a Kenwood DVX700 double-DIN headunit with touchscreen. Signals are fed to a pair of Boston Acoustics amps, one mono and one 4-channel. From there, the mono drives the Boston Acoustics subwoofers and the multi-channel heads to Boston Acoustics 6.5-inch component speakers. A trio of Kenwood 6.5 monitors were added in both the console and on the passenger side and a massive 19-inch monitor found in a custom rear floating enclosure. The electronics are

Memphis Car Audio is of course involved in Drifting and Time Attack as a true supporter of the enthusiast scene.

They have done a solid branding job by backing the right drivers and when it came to building a demo car, they ensured it would have wide appeal. The parent company portfolio includes Memphis Audio and Fulmer racing helmets, so this Scion xD would embrace both the audio and competition realms to illustrate that.

How did the crew at M2 Motoring and Memphis Car Audio accomplish this? Well, let’s start with the fact that the interior has been gutted, yet retains a full audio install, some of which is integrated in to the cage! The Memphis M Class 10-inch subs are sitting in tiny custom enclosures that are bolted to a rear cross bar of the color-matched cage. Driving the subs is a Memphis S Class SC1.500 mono amp situated on a cargo area rack along with a pair of S Class SC4.55 amps to drive the balance of the speakers. Found throughout the cabin are four Memphis M Class 6.5-inch speakers all connected with Memphis wiring. The source unit is a Valor 7-inch double-DIN headunit with multiple playback capabilities.

The interior itself has undergone quite a lot of modification. Starting with reclining Sparco Evo3 racing seats, the 4-point harnesses were supplied by Crow Racing.

MOTIVATION

a short hub and quick release. Oink Fabrications supplied the multi-point cage that surrounds the interior making the chassis mega-stiff. Adam Nonis created the custom carbon fiber door panels.

Oink Fabrications also attacked the chassis by completely stitch-welding the entire car. Not something you see in many Scions. A set of KW Suspension Variant 3 coilovers were added in addition to a JBT big brake kit to bring the Scion to a stop with some hustle. The rolling gear was carefully selected to be all about going fast with a set of ultra-light Enkei 19x8-inch RPF1 MAT-forged wheels. On all four corners are a set of Toyo T1R tires to keep the xD from coming unglued.

Under the tiny lid is where some more of the magic happens. Gone is the sickly 1.8L stock motor and in its place is a fire-spitting 3S-GTE 4-banger turbo. JRX Performance took the potent MR2 motor and dropped it in there with the utmost precision.

Then they started upgrading the factory turbo motor with a Warehouse / Airwerks K24 turbo upgrade,

a custom JRX turbo manifold and downpipe ending up in DC Sports stainless exhaust.

The attention turned to the cool side where a JRX custom front mount was connected to Injen IC piping and vented with a GReddy Type-RS blow-off valve. To keep things extra cool, a custom Mishimoto aluminum radiator was added with upgraded Mishimoto electric fans. The whole package delivered solid power when tuned with a Microtech ECU. Still in progress, we have no official horsepower numbers but the current estimate is 400hp at the wheels. Michael Ma and his M2 Motoring crew plan to both show and track this Scion and promises to surprise some sports cars with it. For them, the exercise was all about fitting a load of their audio gear into a race car with minimal weight gains. As many tuners realize that a system doesn’t always have to harm their performance, you’ll be seeing many more projects just like this.

Gone is the sickly 1.8L stock motor and in its place is a fire-spitting 3S-GTE 4-banger turbo. JRX Performance took the potent MR2 motor and dropped it in there with the utmost precision. With massive amounts of horsepower, I knew they were having a hard time putting the power down. So I gave HorsepowerFreaks a call and soon after we were working on two of the most powerful E46 M3’s that exist today. The HorsepowerFreaks M3 is a street and drag car, while my car is built for racing. I plan on participating in the Time Attack events in SoCal.” It isn’t much of a secret how HorsepowerFreaks Inc. ack again for Round 2, the D1GP storms into Miami for some tandem action. With a solid crowd and competitors participation in round 1, Marketing Director Julie Sadowski described the event as “A huge success.” With a monster crowd and some great action there was nothing but high impact, eye candy for the insane drifting fans. Held at Dolphin Stadium parking lot, the new venue attracted fans from all around the dirty south and as far away as Canada! It isn’t often that you get to see your favorite D1 drivers tearing up the blacktop inches away from each other, so fans were committed to seeing this rare event. With some heated action and several spectacular crashes, the podium was topped by a Japanese driver but with one wildcard taking 3rd spot, Harri Hokkanen from Finland. Daigo Saito in the BN Sports Chaser battled Ken Nomura in the Blitz Skyline Sedan with Saito coming out on top over Monkey Boy.

he team at HIN turned up the heat in Chicago this year, as more rides, girls and prizes hit the Windy City than ever before. Car competitors from all over the US and Canada showed off their rides in style, aiming to take home the top prize and maybe a few model’s phone numbers! This event clearly indicated the tuner scene is still smoking hot in the Mid-West as countless car clubs and enthusiasts jammed the parking lot of Soldier Field for a taste of HIN action, The drift event was especially off the hook, with the course being twice the size of what we’re used to seeing.

However, the massive track claimed many casualties who went in too hot or jammed on the brakes a little too late. The drift demos clearly made for some crazy action and crowd pleasing good times.

Our very own PAS Model Lounge was a huge hit, with cuties at every turn and tons of give-a-ways from our supportive PAS Model Lounge partners including Vibe Audio, installerinstitute.com, ModifiedCarTrader.com, and SassyAssy clothing.

Much love and recognition goes out to all the brands and companies promoting the tuner scene and representing at Hot Import Nights.

As always, the city of Chicago served up a very blurry yet memorable weekend, with a strong turnout, hot hunnies, jaw-dropping rides and tons of freebies and entertainment.

he mighty Hot Import Nights tour kicked it into high gear heading into the Motorsports fueled region of North Carolina. Rows of custom imports and go-go dancers lined the showfloor of Cararrus Arena. Many of the East Coast’s finest crews were in the house as Team Emotion and Team New Image brought some heat with a very strong showing as their members earn top honors in multiple categories. Our boosted PAS Magazine Scion xD was joined by dozens of other tightly tuned Scion’s which dominated the show. For all you drifters-intraining, Formula D driver Chris Forsberg was on site offering everything from autographs to drifting tips alongside his 350Z at the NOS Energy Drink booth. RACEWAY PARK ENGLISHTOWN, NJ MAY 19, 2009 he Hot Imports Nights team made a bold move changing the venue for this event and it paid off with great weather and an even better turnout! The famous Englishtown Raceway is home to many top events and this event has typically been one of HIN’s hottest stops every year. The Tri-State area is home to many of the sickest rides and talented tuners on the enitre East Coast, so it came as no surprise to see such a healthy number of hot rides invade Raceway Park. As expected, Team New Image came with guns blazing on their home turf as they swept the Team Competition winning Team Attendance, Team Represent and Best Team honors. While some thought the switch from NYC to Jersey would draw less fanfare, we couldn’t dissagree more... the aisles were rammed with enthusiasts. The Tri-State and the selection of cars, babes and entertainment was nothing short of top-notch with a special appearance by hip hop legends Erick Sermon and Keith Murray.

On the evening of May 9th organizers of Hot Import Nights transformed New England Dragway into an epic party none could forget. HIN’s combination of show-n-shine competition, drift and motocross demos, live entertainment and the babealicious import models proved to be more than most could handle. Our Canadian homie Serge Leger and his former PAS cover car Cadillac CTS-V earned Best of Show Unlimited while long time PAS pal Ryan Ramnarain continued to stack up more wins than the Yankees with his recently re-widebodied Lexus IS300 nabbing Best of Show Performance. In addition to Ramnarain’s individual dominance, the rest of Team New Image took home Best Team Overall for their group efforts.

ith two already successful events under Darren McNama their belt in 2009, the Formula D train ra taking home a win at Wall, NJ charged into Jersey like it had no brakes left. Wall Speedway has been host to Formula D before but not on this grand a scale with more competitors than ever making the trip to The Gauntlet event. The weather however did not cooperate as days of rain left standing water on the track and fans wondering if they would see any action. By elimination time though, it was dry enough to get sideways and generate some smokey tandems. Would we see the continued dominance of former champions or would there be some surprises?

You bet there were because former champions: Tanner Foust in the Rockstar Scion, Samuel Hubinette in the Mopar Viper and Rhys Millen in the RMR Solstice were all One way to ensure adequate air flow absent from the podium – a rare sight indeed.

Team Falken’s years of drifting efforts have had big results in many ways, but none more significant than at Round 3. Despite almost losing their star driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. to mechanical problems, the remaining members and their crew forged through everything the fierce competition could throw at them. In the end, it paid off in copious amounts of praise for the team as a whole with a first-ever sweep on a Formula D podium. Irishman Darren McNamara in the Saturn Sky won over teammate Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the supercharged Mustang who nabbed second.

The third and final place would be decided in a heated tandem battle between young superstar Ken Gushi versus Tyler McQuarrie in the V8-powered Falken 350Z with McQuarrie giving it his all to make Formula D history.

erfect weather, custom built track in a city that is full of sinful pleasures how could an event not go off perfect in Las Vegas? It is for that reason Formula D has embraced the visit to the “Diamond in the Desert” for their now annual All In drifting event. It was certain to be a different event from Round 3 in Jersey. There would be no repeats of raining conditions and the chance Team Falken would lay down another podium sweep would be tough to repeat.

In fact, the exact opposite happened, as the talented Team Falken drivers walked away empty handed without any hardware. Chris Forsberg in the NOS 350Z was able to oust Tyler McQuarrie in the Falken 350Z while on the other side Ryuji Miki slammed the door on Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the mighty Falken Mustang. With the Falken threat out of the way, it was time for the final to get under way. Tanner Foust in the Rockstar Scion battled Miki in the A’PEXi RX-7 with defending champion Foust sealing the deal. The last laugh went to Forsberg who was able to start leading the points as he chases his first ever Formula D championship.

or the first round of the Castrol DMCC Eastern division, drift fans got their money’s worth at the Autodrome Montmagny just outside historic Quebec City. Thankfully the downpour of rain from last year was replaced by some steamy hot weather. On top of that, a lot of drift junkies showed up – those hardcore QC fans come out in rain or shine. The hottest drifters from Canada and the US took to the track alongside the stunning DMCC umbrella girls. On paper, the Eastern division features many more big name drivers, which meant that the action would be guaranteed and the record crowd of 4,700 would agree!

After some hard fought battles it was on to the Top 4 action. Two-time defending champ Fred Girard in the Skyline faced Matt Waldin in the first duel. Waldin took it away after a OMT and sent the champ packing.

The other battle was between Pat Cyr’s Corolla AE86 against Tania Bourbonnais GTO monster, but “the little AE86 that could” won that tandem proving displacement was clearly not a factor. In fourth position, Fred Girard proved he’s still a contender for the 2009 title. Bourbonnais showed moments of brilliance she mastered working hard during the off-season and is always a threat. In the finals, Waldin went out with a bang by blowing his engine on the track and ended up in the security wall, which gift wrapped the win to Cyr. Although Cyr would have probably preferred to win his first DMCC event the hard way, there will be plenty of opportunity for that in exciting 2009 DMCC season.

ans packed the stands for the second round of the Castrol DMCC Drift Championship. The practice day left the track damp, but the competition day cleared up to a sun filled sky. This event was also the occasion for the drifters of the Pro-Am series to compete for the first time this summer. Let’s not forget these drivers are tomorrow’s champions and should be watched carefully even though they have a little less budget than the pros.

There were some memorable moments of the day and without a doubt one was the rematch between Pat Cyr and Matt Waldin. Both showed off high speed tandem with lots of smoke staying inches apart. Once again, Pat Cyr was able to fight for first place. Marc Landreville was probably having the best day of his drift career after

winning against Marc-André Duquette.

The amateur drifter from the day before found himself going for gold against points leader Cyr. Waldin was too strong for Marc-André Duquette, who was able to cement the third spot on the podium.

And after changing to a set of other used tires as a last resort, Marc Landreville surprised us all by giving Pat Cyr a real run for his money during two “One More Times” Unfortunately for Marc, during the second “One More Time” his Nissan 180SX crashed heavily into the wall in turn 1 to give him 2nd place. In the end, Pat Cyr took a big step ahead of the rest of his competitors by sealing yet another solid win.

eld at the beautiful Harrah’s Autobahn Country Club, the 7th stop on the SCCA World Challenge tour was in unfamiliar territory. The venue was a first for World Challenge cars and also played host to several other series to bring some serious road racing back to Chicago at the inaugural Harrah’s Autobahn Grand Prix Presented by Mazda. Not only did the World Challenge cars show up to do battled but the Formula Atlantics, Star Mazdas and several other one-make Challenge races like the Patron GT3s and the Playboy Mazda Miatas. At the end of it all, the event was a huge success and should be on the tour in 2010.

GT Class Although there was some serious competition out there, it was the veteran Randy Pobst of Gainesville, GA who won the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Grand Prix on Sunday. Pobst took home his first win of the season in an eventful race at the first-time venue, part of the Harrah’s Autobahn Grand Prix Presented by Mazda weekend. Brandon Davis, of Huntington Beach, CA and Brian Kubinski, of nearby Shorewood, IL completed the top three.

Pobst started his No. 1 K-PAX Racing Volvo S60 second on the grid, but was third behind the pole-sitting No. 14 Global Motorsports Group Porsche 911 GT3 of James Sofronas and the No. 97 Tax Masters/Brass Monkey Racing Porsche 911 GT3 of third-starting Tony Rivera, as he exited turn one. The entire race changed in one short straight to turn two for Pobst though, as he left turn two with the lead and never looked back.

Touring Car It was Jason Saini, of Fort Worth, Texas who led from the pole to the checkers, taking his second SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car win of the season. Peter Cunningham, of Milwaukee, WI and Pierre Kleinubing, of Coconut Creek, FL completed the top three. Part of the Harrah’s Autobahn Grand Prix Presented by Mazda weekend, the 17-lap, 60.52-mile race began with its trademark standing start and pole-sitter Saini getting the jump in his No. 74 MAZDASPEED/Stoptech/ProParts MAZDA6. Saini led a two-car Tri-Point Motorsports breakaway, with teammate Eric Foss in tow in the No. 75 MAZDASPEED/Stoptech/ProParts MAZDA6. The two pulled out to a four-second lead over Cunningham until a lap-13 full-course caution was called to remove Seth Thomas’ BMW 328i, which was parked just off course at Turn Two with a mechanical issue. After the caution though it was all Saini for the entire race.

edline Time Attack (RTA) is on a highspeed tear in 2009. Not only are they the only national Time Attack Series but they attract drivers from around the world in some of the fastest cars on the planet. All of these elements combined with drifting demos, hot models and popular car shows ensuring that RTA is here to stay. However, the main focus has always been the driving and not specifically the style or personal flare of the drivers, it is all about the bottom line – lap times.

At Round 2 in Willow Springs, the record times continue to fall. The winners in Street AWD were: Jeremy Toye in the RobiSPEC Mitsubishi Evo took top slot, Street RWD Jeremy Croiset in the BerkTech Toyota MR2 and Street FWD Matt Andrews stepped out of his Miata to pilot the Nitto Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Modified Class saw JC Meynet clinch 1st place in Modified AWD in the HarmanMotive STi with Brian Lock locking down 1st in Modified RWD and an impressive performance from Tim Kuo running faster than the RWD Class in his Sportcarmotion Civic with a 1:29.693 to easily outrun his class by over 6-seconds!

Finally the big dogs would fight it out for top honors. The fastest time of the day did not go to an AWD car but rather Billy Johnson in the FX Motorsports twin turbo NSX. Running an impressive 1:18.555, Johnson was almost 2-seconds faster than Unlimited AWD winner Jonathan Bomarito in the Sierra Sierra Evo. When it came to Unlimited FWD, Chris Rado in the World Racing Scion put over 8-seconds distance between him and the closest competitor to run faster than most of the Unlimited RWD and AWD, a feat that no one thought possible. hen it comes to ultimate handling machines for low budgets, classic BMWs are an excellent choice. Hop in a 3-series, either a 84-91 E30 chassis or the replacement E36 and you have one great handling car right out of the gate for next to nothing. With a stiff chassis and some of the sharpest steering in the business, these front engine, rear wheel drive coupes are remarkable, especially with an LSD. We sat down with the pros at Motovicity to get some insights into one of the leading suspension manufacturer’s they carry. Performance Sales Representative Bill Garrett runs us through his installation and review of the Tokico Illumina damper and springs on his personal 1999 BMW 328iS. Anyone familiar with BMWs will tell you that one thing to look out for on the E36 3-series (‘92-‘99) is the suspension. These cars handle fantastically, but over time the bushings and shocks degrade quite heavily. With over 100,000 miles on the odometer, it was time to start shopping for replacement suspension parts. This BMW is a daily driver on the means streets of Michigan nine months of the year. Since it’s driven 70 miles round trip each day to Motovicity headquarters, it also needs to be very livable. On top of that, it is also Garrett’s choice for spirited weekend driving. Garrett wanted something that would not hamper the quality ride the car is known for, but at the same time enhance the cars great handling characteristics.

After careful consideration, Garrett decided on the Tokico Illumina shock and spring kit (ILK).

The kit consists of Tokico Illumina adjustable struts along with matching lowering springs. The complete matched set meant the two would work well together for the best results. The dampening adjustability of the Illumina would allow Garrett to crank up the stiffness when he wanted to drive the car aggressively or back it out for those long daily commutes in BMW comfort. The Illuminas would offer all of the attributes he was looking for and fine tune the car to achieve the best of both worlds.

The installation was pretty standard aside from the predictable difficulties of disassembly that plague all northern climate cars. Each part was packaged well and individually wrapped with all

hardware. Basic setup and adjustment specs were included along with an adjustment tool that is designed to attach to a keychain. After the install, calling the first impressions “amazing” would be an understatement. The car went from commuter soft and wallowing down the road to sports-car firm carve up the road in only a few hours. The ride height was lowered 1-inch to dramatically alter the already classic appearance of the 328iS. While the car was noticeably stiffer than before, none of the original feel and control of the car was sacrificed.

In about one minute, each of the four shocks can be adjusted to give the desired ride by simply popping the hood and the trunk to get at the top of the damper. All of the things Garrett was after in an aftermarket suspension were delivered since he

had no need for a full coilover with ride-height adjustability it was a perfect fit. “Performance, comfort, and control have been greatly improved,” says Garrett. “I have had the opportunity to put some miles on the car and wish I had done it sooner. The Tokico Illumina and spring combo offers the driver more out of their car with OEM quality and fitment.

ike most of you readers, the thing we here at PAS Magazine hate are thieves. It seems like every week we hear another story of people losing their parts, their audio or even an entire car. There are many companies who manufacture security products for your car, but few of them have been around as long as McGard. Their sole purpose is designing and manufacturing mechanical security items – none of which are more famous than the McGard Tough Locks.

Based in Orchard Park, NY it is easy to recognize this upstate New York company is a substantial operation with over 225,000 sq ft. of manufacturing, warehousing and administrative.

The massive plant is a true in-house operation.

While many claim to do the majority of their manufacturing in-house, McGard can actually back that claim by fabricating everything under one roof. The company has been that way since its inception in 1964 when the company founder Lewis D. McCauley noticed a need arising to put the brakes on theft of a new automotive upgrade trend – mag wheels. The popular and expensive alloy wheels were starting to pop up on early muscle cars and sports cars, but were disappearing overnight.

Enough was enough and McGard was in full gear with their first patent approval in 1966. By the time the alloy wheel trend had hit the automakers, so had the interest in stealing them. So by the early 1970s, McGard had started inking deals to get their Tough Locks on cars sitting on vulnerable dealer lots as well.

What makes McGard unique is that they have the largest combination of lock patterns on the market. They have been on top of their game for decades. Their lock patterns number in the 1000s with many different variations.

R U O T Y R C TO a needle in a haystack and would-be thieves just don’t have the time for that, they want to be in and out in a hurry. Thieves simply leave McGard wheel lock-equipped cars alone since they can’t remove them, even by force. Trying to break them is next-to impossible, if they don’t set off the vehicle security system or destroy the wheel trying.

The life of a McGard wheel lock starts out as raw materials, more specifically alloy steel bars.

From there, the product is precision machined into various shapes and styles for each application.

The female portion (pattern) of the locking system is machined out as well. From there, the product is heat-treated for strength and then tested vigorously in the Quality Assurance area. Periodically, random samples are selected to be torture-tested in the 20,000-pound press to see if the locks and lug nuts are up to spec. After heat-treating, the locks and lug nuts are also chromed in-house.

Afterwards, they are off to packaging where they are boxed and ready to ship to car companies and retailers around the world.

McGard products are carried by most major automotive retailers in North America. McGard branched out to build plants in both Germany and Japan to keep up with demand for almost every major automaker in the World. Rather than go through the trouble of tooling it up themselves, they inked deals with McGard to custom design wheel locks and lug nuts that in many cases are laser-etched with custom logos to compliment their product line.

T

here are many ways to increase horsepower and we like them all, however none can compare to the all out effectiveness of Nitrous Oxide. From the price to the punch, nitrous systems have many advantages over the power adding competition.

Turbo and superchargers for examples are pricey, require a great deal of wrench knowledge and needs a dynamic relationship with the computer to function properly.

Nitrous Oxide Injection has been around for many years, in fact during World War II, the German Luftwaffe injected nitrous oxide into its aircraft engines to boost power. The primary benefit comes from the fact that N2O contains 36 percent oxygen by weight versus air’s 21 percent or so. Also, the cooling effect associated with nitrous oxide’s liquid-to-gas change in state increases the incoming air charge density providing yet another advantage over the heat generating effects of turbo and compression chargers. Racers began legal and sometimes illegal use of nitrous some thirty years ago to gain horsepower. At the 1976 Daytona 500, the qualifying times posted by both AJ Foyt and Darrell Waltrip were thrown out after officials discovered their hidden nitrous systems. When asked why he used nitrous Waltrip said “we couldn’t figure a way to hide a turbo.”

For all the unique qualities of nitrous oxide there are some immutable similarities it has with all forms of adding power; such as the need to control or retard the timing, the ability to supply adequate air and fuel, and internal components that can handle the added horsepower and torque. Making big horsepower is sometimes risky and expensive; fortu-

nately there are great tools and methods to help safeguard your investment like wideband O2, EGT and Knock sensors as well as the tried and true “Plug Read Sensors” aka eyeballs. All used to control lean condition and ultimately resist detonation, the nemesis for any power adder.

Now that you have decided to get on the bottle you have a few more decisions to make like; Wet or Dry? Single nozzle, Plate or Direct Port?

NOS, NX or Ny-Trex just to name a few. As with any power adder you must evaluate your ability and equipment and make choices that give the greatest chance for success. Let’s start by choosing the type of system for your ride.

WET SYSTEMS are the most common; they are easy to tune combining both nitrous and fuel into one mixing spray nozzle or plate, the horsepower and air-fuel mixture are controlled by simply changing the metering jets. “Wet” refers to adding fuel and requires tapping into the fuel system, using a fuel solenoid valve for delivery and a wet nozzle or plate to blend and spray the N2O and fuel mixture into the intake air.

Wet systems are independent, meaning you don’t need to add fuel thru the ECU and injectors or increase fuel by raising the fuel pressure.

DRY SYSTEMS are great options for some; they cost a bit less and have fewer components to install due to lack of fuel involvement. “Dry” refers to spraying nitrous only and requires the need to add fuel thru the vehicles fuel injectors. Nitrous needs fuel to make horsepower and dry systems either increase fuel pressure or increase the injector pulse thru the ECU to gain the extra fuel. Dry systems generally are limited in

horsepower due to the abilities of the stock fuel supply, injectors and ECU. Although typical dry system can add 35, 50 or maybe 75hp, to get more ponies you will need to upgrade fuel components and be on a first name basis with your tuner.

DIRECT PORT SYSTEMS are the choice for the hardcore race crowd. In general “Direct Port” refers to an injector nozzle placed within each intake runner just before entering the cylinder head. Direct port systems have the greatest potential of making horsepower and require advanced equipment, knowledge, and tuning skills to perform consistently and safely. Direct port systems have many more aspects that require fabrication such as nozzle placement in each runner, bending tubing for nozzles, distribution blocks to rout lines and mounting of hardware. Even the most advanced direct port system however can be accomplished within a days install at a fraction of the cost of any turbo or supercharger and have even greater potential.

ACCESSORIES are important aspects of any well planned nitrous system. Basic systems are just that “Basic.” Now that you have your system it’s time to make it complete. Most systems use a 10lb nitrous bottle and are typically mounted in the trunk space. To have this operate properly the pressure needs to be at 900-950psi. The nitrous pressure has a direct relationship with the temperature, for example the bottle at 80 degrees Fahrenheit will be to low at about 865psi while 97 degrees will raise the pressure to 1070psi and be too high to allow the N2O solenoid valve open properly. To get to that 90-92degrees and hit your target 900-950psi sweet spot you will need a good bottle gauge and some method of temperature control. In the summer you need a cool shade or ice pack and for winter months you need a good bottle heater system, preferably pressure controlled to come on/off at your selected pressure. There are also some advanced regulator systems that manage the pressure variable with the aid of nitrogen. Whatever methods you choose always keep the N2O pressure consistent and you will have great results. If the bottle must be mounted within the passenger compartment you will need to add a “Blow Down” system to vent nitrous outside the car in the event of mandatory safety blow off due to over pressurization of the bottle.

The addition of a Purge System is a must for most avid nitrous users.

Purging allows you to bring the nitrous from the trunk and fill the feed line completely to the N2O valve for immediate activation. While purging the outlet is usually within view of the driver and reports that the system is staged and ready for use. As a bonus a great purge cloud can be intimidating to the competition.

There are many other accessories that will complement your system, from progressive controllers, window switches, throttle position switches, timing retard controls, time delays and activation, total digital management systems and much more. Perhaps one of the most important

accessories recommended is the Fuel Pressure Safety Switch also known as the “Hobbs” switch. This simple device is installed at the fuel connection to insure adequate fuel pressure for a safe nitrous activation. The last thing you want is nitrous injecting without the proper amount of fuel.
