Dear Readers,
Welcome to the Spring/ Summer 2024 issue of Powerful Women Today, where we will delve into the intricate theme of balance and its profound implications for the empowerment and disempowerment of women. In a world marked by ceaseless motion and often conflicting demands, achieving balance has emerged as both a coveted aspiration and a daunting challenge as women navigate multifaceted roles and societal expectations with resilience and grace.
Yet, amidst these disparities, we also celebrate the strides made towards gender parity, propelled by the unwavering determination of women to claim their rightful place on an equal footing.
We asked our Powerful Women Today members to give their personal perspective on the role ‘balance’ plays – or does not play - in their lives
Throughout the following pages, you will encounter their stories of resilience, innovation, and activism.
As we navigate the complexities of this theme, let us reflect not only on the challenges that lie ahead but also on the possibilities that emerge when we embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion. May this issue serve as a catalyst for dialogue, introspection, and action, inspiring us all to strive for a world where priorities replace ‘balance’ as the reality for every woman.
Always committed to your greatest success,
Stacey Hall Edit i l Di tPWT: How have the cultural traditions and norms from your upbringing intersected with your personal aspirations, and how have you navigated any potential conflicts to achieve balance and fulfillment in your life?
My life now does not reflect the cultural traditions and upbringing I experienced growing up. At all. I've spent many many years and a massive amount of inner work to release and heal the beliefs and conditioning I was raised with. What I've have learned from all that inner work forms the basis for what I teach and share now.

I grew up in Latin America, a Patriarchal culture in which women hold an interesting place. Mothers, Daughters, Sisters, Female Saints and Virgins within the Roman Catholic faith are revered by men. Good girls become women of virtue and are held to the highest standards of decorum. Wives are treated and seen as an extension of their husband's need to be almost flawless There is so much pressure on looking the part Yet women are not celebrated for their intelligence and individual ambitions. This was my experience growing up and to this day, it continues to be the voice in my head and a legacy that is sometimes hard to reconcile with. I am an ambitious and aspirational woman without apology with full awareness that I feel and become a bull in a china store when I go home - Dr. Carolina M. Billings, Powerful Women Today Founder
You mean..beside being ridiculed at wanting to be a sportswriter or run a sports PR agency as a female? Decided to ignore them, just let it inspire me to succeed. Success is the best revenge! I learned how to be a serial pioneer on my own with the support of allies and friends who did believe in me and supported my vision.

I grew up in a Southern Baptist household. I experienced a lot of guilt and shame, and felt pressure to be "good" That got filtered through the prism of my unconscious mind and was translated into perfectionism. Which held me back in so many ways. Because if I need to be perfect, and I know I'm not going to be perfect at something, then I just won't do it, right? It was a great day of liberation when I stopped believing things that are not true about myself, released the belief that I should be perfect, and began to live my own life -
Sallie Wagner, Powerful Women Today Mentor ExpertDuring my youth, racial segregation was prevalent, especially in the South Despite challenges, my parents instilled resilience, teaching me to overcome racial barriers with hard work. Attending Les Brown's speech with my mother was pivotal, showing me success transcends race. It fueled my courage to pursue dreams despite obstacles. Although my race affected others' perceptions, I refused to let it define me Instead, I cultivated resilience, committed to breaking barriers This journey ignited my passion for inclusivity, driving me to advocate for equality beyond surface differences. - Stephanie Oden, "Monetize Your Message" Participant
My German upbringing instilled a collective guilt tied to national identity. Despite my ancestors' actions, I rejected feeling responsible. As societal consciousness shifted, I embraced individuality and vowed to pursue a life beyond norms. Moving to South Africa at 25, I confronted being different in a conservative society Raised in a cultured household, I learned humility and effective communication. Regardless of nationality or appearance, I believe in unleashing human potential through coaching and selfmastery. Cultural diversity taught me emotional resilience and the universality of human struggles. Now, I empower others worldwide, leveraging online platforms for inclusive service - Antje Swart, Powerful Women Today "Monetize Your Message" Participant

As I stepped into the first issue of Powerful Women Today in my new role as Editorial Director, it was important for me to fully understand the vision for the magazine and the reason for this specific issue focused on ‘Balance’ as intended by Dr. Carolina M. Billings
I found her answers to my questions to be a priceless outlook into future trends and transformations for women … and men too!
Here are my questions and her answers Do you agree?
PWT: Dr. Billings, could you share with our audience your journey as a social impact entrepreneur?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: Certainly. I hold a PhD in marketing, with my research focusing on the impact of generative AI technology on marketing strategies for entrepreneurs. My work aims to empower individuals by leveraging AI effectively.
PWT: Fascinating. As the founder of Powerful Women Today, could you tell us more about your vision for the organization?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: Absolutely. Powerful Women Today is a boutique accelerator dedicated to the success of both women and men We provide a platform for empowerment and advancement, fostering growth and optimization in various aspects of life.
PWT: Balance is a topic of discussion in our current issue. How do you approach the concept of balance in the context of women's empowerment and entrepreneurship?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: Balance, to me, suggests a dichotomy that I don't necessarily subscribe to Instead, I advocate for integration. It's about consciously integrating different aspects of life rather than striving for an elusive balance.
Having control over how you allocate your time is crucial for integration, right?
Because priorities vary each day as you navigate your career and personal life. One of the significant challenges I faced while working for the C-suite, before the pandemic and the hybrid work style, was the rigid scheduling. It often felt like my time was divided into solid blocks, leaving little room for flexibility. Even if my priorities extended beyond work, there was an expectation that specific blocks of time were designated for work-related tasks. Companies used to discourage blending personal and professional life, but I hope that mindset has evolved.
PWT: I'm so glad you brought that up because I would like to ask you about misconceptions. I have seen so many women think it's a problem that only they can't seem to manage. Do you want to expand upon that a little bit?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: Certainly. There's an adage that goes, "If you want something done, give it to a busy person," and it's true that busy individuals often find themselves taking on more and more However, it's also easy to lose equilibrium Instead of using the term "balance," I prefer to think of it as maintaining equilibrium. Imagine the wheel of life, a tool commonly used in coaching. It's like a dashboard where you can gauge your focus across different areas. When you devote your attention to one aspect, you excel in it, but it comes at the expense of others because you can only be in one place at a time.
Integration is key, but there are words I've chosen to avoid, as they can mislead women. "Balance" is one of them Another is "values" Women often feel pressured to embody traditional values of goodness and service.
Continues on page 82
However, "values" can be abstract. Instead, I use "priority" because it's clearer and more actionable For instance, saying "family is a priority" prompts reflection on how that manifests daily.
Merritt Badeau is an energy and relationship coach in Central New York where she lives with her multigenerational family.
“My house is still pretty full," "I still work full-time," "We aren't vacationing any more than when the kids were young," "There are still loads of laundry and piles of dishes," "Someone keeps eating my dark chocolate without asking," "I thought empty-nesting would be different."
Does this ring a bell? Maybe you've uttered or pondered these phrases. I certainly had a different vision of the empty nest phase in mind. Travel, date nights, more friend time, leisurely weekends, even picking up new hobbies my expectations were lofty. And finally, being on my schedule without catering to someone else's needs for a change
But times have changed. The typical empty nester scenario, where children move out permanently, is evolving. Nowadays, more adult children are returning home. Fewer pursue college, and job scarcity leads many back to the parental nest, transforming it into a multigenerational household
The impact on aspiring empty nesters is profound. Emotional dependencies, financial strains, and varied energies in the home create a rollercoaster of emotions and behaviors. While it's nice to have the kids around more, conflicts inevitably arise. Old dynamics resurface, demanding clear communication and energy cleansing to avoid reverting to past grievances
So, what can you do to navigate this situation? Stand firm against them moving back in.
If non-negotiable issues persist, embrace your empty nest status and enjoy it.
If your children return home, or circumstances like the pandemic prevent their independence, consider these tips:
1. Establish responsibilities, including chores, schedules, and finances. Avoid financing their lifestyle again
Set and uphold boundaries. Treat your adult children as such, respecting your rules and space.
2. Mirror the realities of independent living by charging rent based on their income, and have them manage groceries and meals unless it's a family dinner.
4. Remember, you love these housemates, albeit younger ones Grant grace, take a breath, and accept that sometimes you'll need to safeguard your chocolate stash.
3 Maintain open communication, and negotiate where needed, but safeguard your boundaries and energy.
Merritt BadeauThe constant barrage of emails, endless todo lists, and the pressure to be "on" 24/7 can leave any woman feeling like she's on the verge of a total meltdown Today's reality is that constant busyness leads to burnout, not brilliance. Creating boundaries is crucial, yet many of us feel chained to our devices by the constant ping of notifications.
But what if there was a better way - such as simple mindfulness techniques to help you reclaim control?
Each small step will begin the changes you seek to create that balance in life that you desire between living life and existing through life
Just as honing our careers takes years of dedication, achieving a healthy work-life balance is a journey that requires consistent effort, resources, and a spirit of determination. It's natural to experience a range of emotions when we identify an imbalance – frustration, overwhelm, or even a sense of helplessness.
The key takeaway is that change, however daunting it may seem, is absolutely possible
Here are a few easy techniques you can begin to incorporate into your day anytime:
Make Changes to Notifications and Settings on phone: Instead of reacting mindlessly to every ding, silence notifications for non-work hours. This allows you to choose when to check in, reducing mental clutter.
Start Today with ‘Thank You’: Take a few minutes each morning to reflect on three things you're grateful for This simple practice sets a positive tone for the day.
Simply Press Pause: Throughout your day, take a few minutes to simply breathe. Focus on each inhale and exhale, letting go of any worries or anxieties Live in the present moment.
By incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine, you can cultivate greater focus, reduce stress, and achieve a better work-life balance Remember, you don't have to do it all perfectly. Start small, and prioritize your well-being. A mindful and intentional approach to each day is the key to avoiding the proverbial burnout.

“Boomer women” are great at finding alternative solutions to most things. However, boomer women, like many other demographic groups, may be facing challenges in balancing their work and personal lives due to factors related to career advancement, retirement planning, caring for aging parents, and possibly grandchildren, among other considerations.
In my case, my mother decided to enter a Continuum of Care Retirement Community which takes a person from independent, to assisted living and to nursing home care if needed. My responsibilities included being her Health Care Power of Attorney and Power of Attorney. I dealt with her finances and became her advocate to doctors, nurses, etc While all of this was stressful and timeconsuming (I spent many hours in the emergency room and for hospitalizations), I was fortunate that she was in a great community and I had a very supportive family to help.
“Boomer women” have learned to be resourceful and can leverage their strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and resilience by formulating alternative solutions.
Their strategic thinking allows them to address challenges with creativity, flexibility, and success!
And yet, at times, the stress can be overwhelming To avoid burnout, be sure to set strong boundaries and specific times devoted to work and family.
The benefits will be:
When you manage your time at work you will see increased productivity and efficiency
Your family and friend relationships will improve
You can prioritize self-care activities, such as exercise, hobbies, and relaxation.
As a result, you will increase your wellbeing by reducing stress, improving productivity, enhancing relationships, and promoting self-care.

Judy works with leaders and teams to help them close gaps in their culture through essential conversations that underpin a connection to core purpose.
In today's dynamic and fast-paced world, women find themselves entangled in a complex web of roles and responsibilities. From managing careers to maintaining households and nurturing relationships, the demands can often feel overwhelming Traditional solutions like the concept of work-life balance have proven inadequate, leaving many women feeling trapped between conflicting obligations.
The traditional notion of work-life balance, with its strict separation between professional and personal life, often exacerbates feelings of guilt and inadequacy when these domains inevitably overlap. Women are expected to compartmentalize their lives, resulting in inflexibility and heightened stress Even flexible work arrangements, while beneficial, fail to address the underlying issue of integration
In response, there's a growing recognition of the need for a more innovative approach centred on work-life integration This approach emphasizes flexibility, autonomy, and self-care, challenging the rigid boundaries between work and personal life.
It requires a cultural shift where employers and employees collaborate to create policies that accommodate diverse needs. Colleagues cover each other during events that require attendance during work hours.
This promotes teamwork and enables women to prioritize personal commitments without sacrificing professional responsibilities
Crucially, this approach acknowledges the importance of self-care and well-being. I encourage women to create a conversation that shares perspectives that they have with their employer.
Discuss what values are important to you while considering the responsibilities of the job. Think and create reasonable alternatives that allow you to blend responsibilities from your personal and professional life. While simultaneously developing a deeper trust and relationship by your employer In other words, have meaningful conversation, sharing ideas, solutions that are both compassionate and candid, but opens the doors to share ideas and solutions
The traditional paradigm of work-life balance no longer suffices for the multifaceted lives of women today. Instead, a shift towards worklife integration is necessary, characterized by flexibility, collaboration, and self-care.
By embracing this innovative approach, women can forge a path towards greater balance and fulfillment in all aspects of their lives.

In today's world, women are often walking a tightrope, delicately balancing the myriad demands of modern life From excelling in their careers to nurturing relationships, managing households, and pursuing personal passions, the expectations placed on women can feel overwhelming.
One of the most significant challenges facing women today is the struggle to integrate all aspects of their lives seamlessly. The pressure to excel in their careers often comes at the expense of personal time and relationships, while family obligations and household responsibilities can leave little room for professional growth
Traditional methods of achieving work-life balance have proven ineffective in addressing the complexities of modern life Time management techniques and setting boundaries can only go so far. Moreover, the expectation for women to "do it all" and excel in every aspect of their lives is unrealistic and unsustainable.
In my quest to address this pressing issue, it's essential to prioritize authenticity and remain flexible Rather than striving for a perfect balance between work and life, women are finding
Fulfillment by honouring their individual needs and priorities This means setting realistic expectations, learning to say no when necessary, and finding creative ways to blend work and personal life seamlessly.
At the heart of this innovative approach is the recognition that women are multifaceted beings with diverse interests, talents, and aspirations. By embracing authenticity, women can prioritize what truly matters to them and let go of societal expectations of perfection This might mean redefining success on their own terms, pursuing non-linear career paths, or prioritizing self-care and well-being
Flexibility is also key in achieving work-life integration Rather than adhering to rigid schedules and traditional notions of success, women are learning to adapt to the ebbs and flows of life. This might involve negotiating flexible work arrangements, outsourcing household tasks, or carving out dedicated time for personal passions and hobbies.
In the pursuit of work-life integration, it's important to remember that it's not about achieving a perfect balance, but rather finding fulfillment in the journey

When I push myself too hard, cramming weekends with work or social obligations, my body rebels. Without time to recharge, I stumble into the next week depleted.
Sound familiar? Back-to-back Zoom meetings, emails, and endless tasks leave me drained by Friday. This cycle is a major cause of burnout for many women in business. Saying no feels impossible with a never-ending to-do list.
Even weekends aren't sacred. Thoughts of work infiltrate moments meant for relaxation. Saturdays become catch-up days, the only respite from incessant demands.
But after too many Mondays dozing off at my desk, I decided to reclaim Sundays. These are my "Sacred Sundays" reserved for rest, reading, and leisurely activities.
I sleep in, read the news, maybe take a leisurely walk or swim Conversations with friends and diving into historical books bring me joy. No work, no emails, no texts about business just peace.
I've learned to decline evening engagements, prioritizing my body's need for rest. As I age, listening to its calls for quiet becomes crucial.
I urge you to carve out your own "Sacred Sunday." It doesn't have to be the same day as mine, but find a day to leave work behind and recharge

Imagine for a moment that you have the power to travel back in time. You are standing face to face with the first human pair, let’s call them Adam and Eve. What questions would stir in your mind? Personally, I would be curious about their perspectives on gender roles. How did they come to define their duties and responsibilities? Did they naturally fall into certain roles, or was it a conscious decision?
As a grandson to an early-age widowed grandmother, a son to a passionate mother, and a brother to four incredible sisters, I grew up witnessing firsthand the grace with which the women in my life manage their multifaceted roles, which has been my first profound lesson in leadership. resilience and partnership.
I recently asked my mother in a recorded interview, how she seamlessly blended her career with her household activities, and she answered “The support and care of your father, my love for my family, my passion for my career, and a lot of meticulous planning and open dialogue. I never tried to balance, I aimed for a harmonious life.”
The narrative of “balance” is often misleading for everyone, it suggests an equal distribution of time and effort, which rarely reflects reality Instead work-life integration and harmony are about the fluidity of roles, where professional and personal responsibilities coexist, supported by adaptability and understanding. My global experience has shown me that the challenge of integrating work and personal life is a universal struggle for women.
Men, as allies, play a crucial role by advocating and fostering a culture of integration and harmony for all genders. We definitely do not have all the answers, yet we can actively listen to women’s experiences and collaborate to find solutions that work for everyone.
One often overlooked challenge is the mental load placed on women in managing multi-tasks. Even when men offer to help with household duties, for example, the constant need to delegate or remind them can feel like an additional emotional burden on women
Men can shift from a reactive to a proactive attitude, instead of waiting to be instructed, initiate a conversation about responsibilities sharing, observe what needs to be done, and jump in
Women can help themselves and upcoming generations, starting with their sons, by instilling values of work-life integration and gender equality and equity.
The journey of work-life integration is unique for every woman, yet the common thread is the pursuit of harmony By embracing flexibility, fostering support, and challenging traditional “scripts”, we can all be part of creating a more inclusive and balanced society for everyone

“Planning is a process of choosing among those many options If we do not choose to plan, then we choose to have others plan for us.” Richard I. Winwood
In the previous chapter I mentioned how I ‘schedule for success’ by choosing what I will accomplish each day based on being Self-Accountable to my core values and goals It is how I ensure I am in alignment with myself and staying within my comfort zone to keep moving forward and making sales
In serving thousands of clients over the years, the vast majority had not ever experienced scheduling their days for success prior to meeting me. They rarely used an appointment book
As a result, their mind was filled to the brim with what they intend to get done that day, what they didn’t get done the previous day, and what they wanted to get done tomorrow. As such, they felt overwhelmed because everything seemed equally important and urgent to get done.
They had no idea of what to do first. They felt that they were failing at everything. With such a lack of clarity and confidence, is it any wonder they are not able to be consistent with the activities that lead to sales, satisfaction and success?
What they are actually doing is selling out on their self!
Let’s pause for a moment.
Have you heard the joke about how to eat an elephant? The punch line is: ‘One bite at a time!’ Which is the same way we are meant to manage our activities one small bite at a time There was a time long ago when my mind was so jam-packed with thoughts and wishes and dreams and ‘to-do’s’ that it felt like a jumbled mess I was literally choking on my thoughts
Unable digest even one idea fully, I became exhausted with the effort so nothing got done and I felt like a failure. What changed for me was hearing the joke about the elephant. I had been attempting to digest all of my goals and activities as one big bite.
I believe I did that because I had heard and took literally the phrase that it was important to take ‘a Big Bite out of Life.’ Perhaps you have heard that statement, too?
After hearing the joke, though, I realized that a bite is a bite not the entire elephant!!

Transitioning from the captivating world of film to the nurturing realm of massage therapy has been a journey marked by resilience, reinvention, and unwavering determination. As a young woman navigating the aftermath of a global pandemic, this transition has not only been a testament to my adaptability but also a poignant exploration of my true passions and aspirations.
The decision to embark on this transformative path was not made lightly For years, I had immersed myself in the art of storytelling, fueled by a deep-seated passion for creativity and visual expression. However, as the world grappled with unprecedented challenges, I found myself yearning for a deeper connection to my work a desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.
Returning to school full-time amidst the lingering echoes of the pandemic was a daunting prospect, yet it was also an opportunity for growth and renewal. With each lecture and lab session, I delved into the intricacies of anatomy, physiology, and the healing power of touch, laying the groundwork for a future career centred around holistic wellness and compassionate care.
But my aspirations extend beyond the confines of academia As I traverse this path, I am also working tirelessly toward the realization of a long-held dream: starting my own practice. Fuelled by a passion for entrepreneurship and a commitment to creating a nurturing space for healing and rejuvenation, I am determined to turn this vision into a reality.

Incorporate nutrient-rich foods into your diet such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and my favourite mushrooms to support healthy hair growth and maintain its strength and shine
I started researching mushrooms and hair. First, I love mushrooms and now if you don’t like the taste there are different ways to receive the nutrients from them. I love Nootropics, you wouldn’t even know that it’s made from mushrooms. Which mushrooms are the best for hair growth?
Reishi – a kidney-shaped fungi – is known in health circles for its immune-enhancing properties. More recently, researchers have found that reishi mushroom can help lower levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – the hormone implicated in pattern hair loss Cordyceps militaris contains bioactive compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce scalp inflammation and promote hair growth Lion's mane appears to promote circulation Better blood flow means more blood is coming to your hair follicles, which should help your hair grow and stay healthy. Chaga - Encourages hair growth. The Chaga mushroom is consistently used in shampoos and other hair care products to stimulate hair growth. Research has concluded that it does in fact have the potential to naturally boost hair growth. Who doesn’t want their hair to look like mane?
In a 2019 study, researchers delved into the effects of chaga's triterpenes on human follicle dermal papilla cells
Their discoveries were striking: four of Inonotus obliquus' triterpenes exhibited a hair-growthstimulating prowess that surpassed the positive control, minoxidil (the active ingredient in Rogaine)
Mushrooms are the power players in nearly every industry right now From cuisine to medicine, a new source of electrical energy, packaging, artificial leather and biofuel, there are countless possibilities for using the mushroom as a substance in creating products and services that are so meaningful in our everyday lives. Not only are fungi essential to life on the planet, but they can also help humanity tackle various problems. And as it turns out, the most common hair care worries are among them Along with a team of B vitamins which help carry oxygen and nutrients to your scalp, which aids in hair growth Chanterelle is a powerhouse of B vitamins, like B3 – Niacin, which improves blood circulation to the scalp and promotes hair growth It also boosts the production of keratin
B5, known as pantothenic acid, improves damaged strands, and boosts hair elasticity, moisture retention and flexibility. B7 or Biotin promotes hair growth by renewing the hair follicles that are already growing. Biotin helps the synthesis of the protein keratin, and it carries oxygen to the cells in the scalp and follicles, keeping them healthy.
Utilizing and implementing automation in your business while keeping your overall business strategy in mind, you can achieve greater efficiency, productivity, and balance in your business.
1. Time Management: Automation tools can handle repetitive tasks like email scheduling, invoicing, and appointment booking. This can free up your creative energies to focus on strategic work or other income-producing activities
2. Workflow Optimization: By automating workflows, you can ensure tasks are completed efficiently and consistently, reducing the need for constant oversight and allowing you to focus on higher-value tasks.
3 Task Delegation: Automating tasks allows you to delegate responsibilities without needing additional personnel, enabling you to scale your operations without increasing your workload. Pro tip: Having a team in place you can hand things off to add additional support to your business.
4 Marketing Automation: Email marketing platforms and social media schedulers can automate marketing campaigns, allowing you to reach your audience consistently and effectively without a lot of manual effort. Pro tip: be sure to stay current (or someone in your team who knows) of the current inner workings of the systems you use. Some platforms unilaterally make changes that wipe out whether a third-party integration works with it or not and that can be detrimental to your marketing efforts
5 Financial Management: Automating financial processes such as expense tracking, invoicing, and payroll can help you maintain financial stability and compliance while minimizing the time spent on administrative tasks. Pro tip: having a bookkeeper as part of my team has been one of the best investments in my business to date!
6 Content Creation: Tools for content creation and distribution, such as scheduling platforms and AI-powered writing assistants, can automate the creation and publication of blog posts, social media updates, and other content, saving you time and effort. Pro tip: I believe that AI will **not** replace humans the key is for humans to maintain and use our critical thinking skills
7. Self-Care and Wellness: By reducing the time and mental energy spent on repetitive tasks, automation allows us to make self-care a priority. This leads to a better fusion of all aspects of our lives and incorporates balance in our day-to-day lives and overall well-being
PWT: Reflecting on your upbringing and the challenges you faced what advice would you give to younger women facing similar obstacles?

Every time you face a challenge you are not sure how to approach, you are presented with an option to move forward in faith, or in fear. Both faith and fear are asking the same thing from you - for you to believe in a future that has not happened yet. Faith is asking you to believe in possibility and opportunity, with an underlying belief that everything that happens to you (good or bad) is there to teach you what you need to know, and is there to ultimately benefit you. Fear is asking you to believe in risks and problems, with an underlying belief that there are very bad things waiting around every corner that may or may not benefit you at all. But either way....you're being asked to believe in something that hasn't happened yet. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS. So if you're going to make it up in your mind why not make it up GOOD? Choose faith over fear and watch your life transform - Adrienne Hill, Powerful Women

For both men and women, my advice is to be curious, not judgmental, first about yourself and others. Do not be hard on yourself! Understand what the cultural traditions and norms are meant for, and what values they transmit If you feel any internal conflict, do not keep it to yourself, open up, human up, and power up to discuss it openly and respectfully in your immediate social environment.

When faced with trauma, discouragement, or challenges, look that thing in the eye and tell it you're not afraid of it. Deal with it. Then, evaluate your sense of self and your life plans. Your hopes and dreams were put in your heart before you were born, and they are there for a purpose Do not abandon them, no matter what Defend those hopes and dreams if necessary, compassionately and firmly. - M. PWT: Reflecting on your childhood and adolescent experiences, what were some key lessons you learned about self-care, mental health, and emotional well-being, and how have those lessons influenced your approach to maintaining balance and fulfillment in adulthood?
You can't change the people around you, but you can change the people around you. " After spending formative years in more a progressive culture towards women, when I returned home I knew I had to go to realize my full potential. I am grateful for my adopted home in Canada It has the culture and respect A true meritocracy within a conservative and dignified society I have been able to reach and exceed my personal goals and am grateful to get to live a fulfilled happy life championing and empowering women ' s emotional and financial independence. - Dr.
Carolina M. Billings, Powerful Women Today FounderMy Dad always instilled in me that you have only one body and that you need to take care of it How you take care of it will reflect in the future. I was also blessed to have been set on a path of natural remedies since I was a child and that taught me to explore more and learn more. Now I have also been blessed by wonderful mentors who have shown me different modalities, products, and things that make me healthier, happier, and feel complete!!! - Monika Greczek,
Powerful Women Today Mentor ExpertSome of the key lessons I learned about self-care, mental health, and emotional well-being are: I matter too, don’t feel guilty about putting myself first, I am no good to myself or anyone else if I’m all broken down. I’ve found that if I’m in alignment I can better serve others and when I am maintaining balance, life seems to be happier. For me, prayer changes things. - Darlene Williams, Powerful Women Today “Monetize Your Message“ Participant
Chasing perfection is fruitless; it's a societal illusion. Prioritize self-care through nourishing food and active living. Accept that emotional burdens shape us but don't need to define us My support system of family and friends has been pivotal for mental health, allowing me to grow in kindness and emotional expression. Every emotion, even anger, has its place and purpose in our lives. - Carole Murko, Powerful Women Today Mentor Expert
Reflecting on my childhood and adolescent experiences, I've learned invaluable lessons about self-care, mental health, and emotional well-being. One key insight I gained is the importance of embracing my voice without hesitation. I discovered that aligning myself with my true essence and values, and understanding that ' no ' is a powerful and complete statement in itself, are essential for maintaining balance and fulfillment. To my younger self, I would emphasize the significance of maintaining integrity and kindness while pursuing aspirations. Surrounding yourself with individuals who appreciate and uplift your authenticity is crucial, as those who don't resonate with your journey will naturally fade away. These lessons have profoundly influenced my approach to maintaining balance and fulfillment in adulthood, reminding me that my journey is uniquely mine, and staying true to myself is paramount. - Cheri Petroni, Powerful Women Today “Monetize Your Message“ Participant

Do you relate to that feeling of holding a freshly printed book with crispy pages whispering promises of knowledge and adventure? Books have been a constant in my life, a source of joy and inspiration. While I appreciate the convenience of ebooks and audiobooks, I still cherish the tactile connection with a paper book
Growing up, books fueled my imagination and nurtured my curiosity and desire to explore the vastness of the world we live in I was raised in a household where we had limited time for watching television, so books were my most constant sensory experience, I used to read them as if I were watching a movie, immersing myself completely in the story and information shared and imagining myself part of it.
When I embarked on my international career, I started diversifying the genre and authors of books I read, and it became a conversation starter in different setups.
As I was moving across the globe, each new country was a chapter in itself, filled with cultural learning and connections I started journaling randomly, capturing the essence of key moments These journals along with the thousands of photos I took now serve as a reminder of how much I've evolved over time
For years, the idea of writing a book was in my head and it seemed overwhelming; “Who am I to write a book? “ . I always wondered how authors get that superpower to write."
I however took a step-by-step approach. I started with verbal experiences sharing, and storytelling became a key part of my communication and leadership and a cornerstone in my workshops and training sessions. I am convinced that the best way to manage knowledge is by sharing it
When I got the opportunity with PWT to contribute to a book anthology, I seized it even if it felt daunting at first. The feedback and support I got along the way and afterward, were encouraging and motivated me to contribute to two more book anthologies with PWT.
This convinced me more that by putting my experiences and learnings out there, I contribute to empowering and inspiring others to navigate similar challenges.
As a natural extension of this journey, I am now curating a special anthology by PWT, offering valuable insights for navigating the challenges of executive mobility, embracing a global mindset, and maximizing the opportunities that come with it; "Hitting the Ground Running: Making Change Work For You" is a platform to share a diverse range of stories, lived experience and practical advice
At the same time, I am writing a chapter in a fourth book anthology as well as a complete book on men's emotional awareness and the conditioning of societal scripts that need to be challenged.

"Dive
Finally, Sadie started off softly and then began to scream, “God. The Universe…..the whole damn world, everybody, me, why why why…”
“Do you think God did this to you? Do you think the Universe somehow conspired to hurt you in this way?” queried Cindy.
Sadie stood up and walked around the room “No I don’t Not really It’s just easier to blame something, someone out there”
She paused and stared out the window “I can still hear them, all of them, you’re not good enough, you’re too thin, too fat, your skirt’s too short, pastor’s wives don’t wear pants, too much makeup, not enough makeup, wrong hair style, wrong everything, I can hear them and it’s deafening.” Her voice quieted, and she sat on the floor, hugging her knees to her chest, and tears streamed down her face. She rocked back and forth but her face showed no comfort, no release.
“This is something bad that happened to good people, Sadie It wasn’t just you, it was your family, his family, his friends, all those people you left behind when you joined the church thing, whatever that was, it wasn’t positive and it wasn’t healthy You buried your pain and let people treat you badly Mickey’s death, as awful as it was, is something that happened Losing him was terrible, you never get over it, you just learn where to put it inside your heart and mind. You ask yourself, what have I learned from this horrible experience, how do I use my pain to love others. How you honor his memory is up to you.”
Cindy stood up, “Look, it’s after 5, let’s go get something to eat.” “Why is it always food with you, Cin?” Sadie smiled.
“Because food makes me feel better, girl, don’t you know that by now?”
They stopped at the Mexican food place on the corner near the house and ordered enchiladas, tamales, and the rice and beans to go with it They got enough for everyone, whoever was at the house
When they arrived at the house, there was Jon, knocking at the door
“Hey Jon, what’s up,” Cindy asked, getting out of the car. Sadie was afraid to move. “What now?” she thought. “I’ve got some news,” replied Jon.
“Okay, let’s eat before this stuff gets cold,” said Cindy, “just smelling it has made me hungry!”
Sitting at the table, the three of them filled their plates and began eating Jon began, “Well, I don’t know if you’re gonna be glad or angry or just not care Your ex has been indicted back in Virginia”
“How do you know?”
“My friend called me this morning; he said that there were indictments on at least 3 counts having to do with indecency and minor females. He also said that they don’t usually try to extradite people for anything they don’t consider a major crime.”
“Not a major crime? Are you kidding me? He ruined lives, he’ll do it again ”
Cindy touched Sadie’s arm, “It’s something,” she said “Most girls don’t even get that It’s better than nothing It’s a step in the right direction They stood up for themselves”
Sadie sat down, clearly angry but letting the reality and logic of their words sink in. “What now?” she said shaking her head.
“We keep going,” said Jon, looking at them with determination, “we support victims, we help them through the justice system, we shine a light on crimes and criminals, we teach victims to speak up and be proud of their ability to become survivors, winners, women who help others. We can’t give up.”
There was silence, then Sadie spoke softly, “I can’t directly accuse him, can I? He hasn’t been convicted of anything, right? So what can I do?”
“Learn, then teach,” said Cindy
Laughing wryly, Sadie said, “You should put that on a bumper sticker.”
“I’m serious, you learn from your experiences, you know how to spot someone full of themselves, someone who is so absorbed in themself that they have no empathy, no concern for anyone else. You can teach that. You learn from your grief, how to get up in the morning after you’ve lost everything that mattered to you, how to put one foot in front of the other until you can function again You know what lies look like and what hypocrites are, you can learn how to rebuild your life after it’s been destroyed And you can teach that Can you see that you have purpose? That you have a unique path right there in front of you? Can you see that the world needs you?”
Cindy stopped speaking, looking embarrassed that she had kinda gone off, preaching at Sadie.
“Sorry,” Cindy said quietly as she made a wincing face.
“No, don’t be sorry.” Sadie walked to the window. “I hadn’t thought of it that way.”
Cindy continued, “I see your experiences as a gift Yes, they were painful, and if anyone had a choice, they wouldn’t choose any of those experiences
Now that you’re free, can you see you’ve been given something that ought to be shared with others?”
Jon looked from one woman to the other, afraid to speak or to move. “Wow, this is a life change moment,” he thought, but he said nothing, he just waited for the next epiphany.
As Jon sat eating and observing and trying to be invisible, he watched as a tiny light inside Sadie grew until it seemed to fill the room It wasn’t a real light he told himself Yet, he felt the warmth, the strength, the power, and the glow all the same
Things were changing, there was hope, there was vision, and there was light. For the first time in years, Sadie began writing. Writing the truth, writing feelings, thoughts, ideas. When she started writing, she couldn’t stop - writing cleansed her soul and mended her heart. But there was one more hurdle that she could no longer avoid.
Sadie walked into the “yelling room” as she referred to it She dreaded this moment This was not something she could do She just couldn’t do it She did not have the strength to go on, she wanted to lie on the floor and cover herself up and never move, never do anything again
Cindy asked, “Let me ask you some questions, okay?”
“Yeah,” Sadie responded, barely audibly. “OK, do you understand that you are still denying Mickey’s death?” “Yeah.”
“Can you explain to me why you chose to stay in that frame of mind?”
“Because I can’t accept it!” Sadie responded, quite a bit more angrily than she intended
“I can’t accept any of it He wasn’t supposed to die I wanted him to go to Canada or Mexico or somewhere and he wouldn’t
Why? Because of some stupid idea that he had to do his duty? What did that get him? Why didn’t he listen to me?
Did he really love me at all? How could he have gone off to war if he really loved me? Sometimes I really…” and she stopped.
“Sometimes you really what, Sadie?” “Nothing”
“Who are you angry with?”
“Me, for not pushing him to leave, for being alive when he’s gone. Him, for going to the Army. God, for letting this happen. His parents, for being so fucking patriotic that they sacrificed their son, I’m mad at everything, everyone.”
“OK, then, what are you going to do with that anger?”
“I don’t know! What the hell am I supposed to do with it? This is never going to go away, and I don’t appreciate you pushing me to talk about it, and I have no idea where to put it, and I’m sick of feeling this way,” Sadie was yelling now
“You think that I can hit a punching bag and feel better? Is that what you think, because it won’t make me feel better. Do you know what it’s like to lose everything you cared about? Do you have any IDEA what it means to lose all your hopes, all your plans, your entire future? Gone! It’s all gone! For what? For nothing, for nothing…”
Sadie collapsed onto a bean bag chair and sobbed
Cindy let put a box of tissues on the floor next to Sadie. And sat down on the floor next to her.
When Sadie’s tears finally stopped, Sadie looked at Cindy and asked, “What now?” “Now we start to put you back together”
The Unconventional Secret, from page 31
By definition, a goal appears as large as an elephant when it is first created. A goal takes up all the space in our mind…and then some. A goal literally is the ‘pink elephant’ in the room
Attempting to manage the whole goal at the same time was over-whelming and all-consuming Finally, I made the choice to stop trying Instead, I took the time to make a list of each and every activity (or bite) that would be required in order to achieve each of my goals And I put them in priority order to ensure the most important ones to accomplish received the most attention.
For example, if one of my priority goals is to create my website, there would be many steps towards the fulfillment of that goal researching designs, hiring a designer, writing copy, selecting photos, etc.
If one of my goals is to grow my email list, there would be many steps towards the fulfillment of that goal – attracting people who meet my ideal audience profile, creating a funnel through which they would enter their email, writing content for the emails, etc
As I identified each of the steps, it was much easier for me to focus on only the one step that had to be accomplished before the others. This was how I learned to take smaller bites that were easier for my mind to digest.
It made it easier for me to also ensure each activity was in alignment with my core values.
One of my clients, Brenda Wiener, shares her experience, “There were activities I would want to accomplish each week and never complete As I was choosing to be more and more personally accountable to myself for completing what I had scheduled each week this wasn’t sitting very well with me
In fact, it was downright embarrassing!”
Do you also find yourself moving the same activity from one week to the next over and over again because you don’t ever accomplish it? It could be because the activity is not in alignment with your core values You could be ‘should-ing’ on yourself to do it Take a moment to consider if this is true for you
I love how George Campbell and Jim Packard in their best-selling book “The Consistency Chain for Network Marketers” suggest we consider what is in alignment with our value and what is not.
“When you are tempted to defer action, do this: Instead of saying, ‘I’ll do it tomorrow,’ say ‘I am never going to do that. Never.’
I am never going to build a business.
I am never going to be healthy
I am never going to be more knowledgeable
Are you comfortable with those statements? Maybe they are a little harsh A little fatalistic Here’s what else they are They are honest”
If you honestly feel you have no desire to do something on your list, you can respond by choosing not to do it. Explore what activities would be in alignment with your core values instead.
If you find there are activities that are required to achieve your goals -- and they are in alignment with your values -- but you don’t want to do them, the next step is to choose if you will delegate that activity to accomplish it on your behalf
Any activities that you do want to accomplish yourself will now be scheduled on a calendar or in an appointment book in priority order In this way, you will keep yourself from over-scheduling or overwhelming yourself.
Continues on page 82
What is the first activity (the first small bite) want to accomplish today which will move you closer towards the achievement of your goal? Will it be a phone call, a meeting, doing research, writing a post or an email or something else? What amount of time will you devote to the activity?
Once you have accomplished that activity, what’s the next activity you will do to move even closer towards the achievement of your goal?
Then, after you have accomplished the second activity, what will be your 3rd intentional activity, and what will be your 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and so on?
That’s the most attractive way to achieve our goals one activity at a time until the goal is fulfilled! It sounds simple and yet, when I share with my clients this is how I schedule my days, they often tell me that they do not feel they could do the same because they would feel too guilty putting their selves first on their list.
That is until I ask them if they feel their goals are important to achieve.
They always answer that question with a resounding ‘YES’!
If you feel the same then here’s the good news! There is only one way to say ‘No’ to others without feeling guilty and that is to schedule each of your days by putting on the calendar the activities that are most important to you to accomplish and which will keep you energized from day to day
And, when others ask you to do something for them that you do not want to do, you can honestly say that you are already busy…because you are.
You are doing what is most important and satisfying to you so you can be of service in the way you feel called to do.
Excerpt from “Selling From Your Comfort Zone: The Power of Alignment Marketing.” Published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc. wwwbkconnectioncom
As a "lifelong learner" and advocate for emotional wellness, I believe in the transformative power of shared stories and guidance When we read about the experiences of others, especially those grappling with similar challenges, we gain valuable insights and feel a sense of unity. It's like a virtual hand reaching out to say, "You're not alone Here's what worked for me, what didn't, and how I learned from both. I did it and you can too!"
So, whatever you consistently practice each day reflects your true priorities. If you're situated in the C-suite, atop the highest floor of the tallest tower, and that's your priority, then claiming that family is your value doesn't align. Children are only young for a fleeting period, and this isn't a judgment but a reality check. While financial obligations like paying the mortgage are undeniable, there are always alternatives. We're fortunate to live in a society with abundant choices. If family genuinely ranks as your top priority, your daily actions will reflect that, irrespective of your stated values.
When I found myself navigating single parenthood several years ago, I was also in the C-suite. However, I realized that I needed to transition to a role closer to home, given the significant increase in responsibilities as a single parent. I vividly recall a job interview for a directorial position in finance and human resources with the owner of a business actively seeking candidates. I was forthright about my priorities, stating that if my son needed me, I would leave immediately, ensuring that nothing essential would be compromised. The owner's response was pivotal; he affirmed my stance, allowing me the flexibility I needed. This willingness to accommodate my priorities enabled me to continue working there. It meant making career adjustments, opting for a smaller organization than I was accustomed to, but it was necessary for my circumstances. This is what prioritizing actions over mere values looks like—making tangible decisions aligned with your life's realities, rather than simply espousing abstract principles.
Question: I am taking the conversation in a slightly different direction. How do you believe having such clarity supports and nurtures creativity, innovation, and resilience, which are all paramount to most women entrepreneurs? These are qualities they often strive for —clarity to fuel creativity, the drive to innovate and make an impact, and the ability to bounce back swiftly from setbacks. Do you think prioritization plays a role in fostering these attributes? continued
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: Creativity isn't something you can switch on and off at will. It's not like falling asleep on command.
For most people, including professional artists, being creative, original, and innovative takes dedication and effort—it's not something readily available on demand. So, returning to the idea of integration, it's crucial to integrate creativity into your life seamlessly. One strategy that works well for me is focusing on one task at a time. I avoid multitasking because, in reality, it's a myth.
Anyone attempting to multitask is likely not giving their full attention to any task. I've found it more effective to concentrate on one thing at a time. Moreover, I've consciously removed the pressure for speed from my life. Recognizing that I'm not in charge of matters as critical as brain surgery or life-or-death decisions has granted me a sense of gratitude. I understand that most tasks can wait until they can be done correctly and with the right mindset, particularly when it involves inspiring or aspiring work. Integrating rest, meditation, and other contemplative practices into my routine isn't just a personal indulgence— it's become a responsibility. Taking care of my mental health and well-being enables me to serve others better. So, while it may not directly address your question, that's how I approach it.
Question: Your commitment to advocating for women's empowerment shines through in everything you've discussed. Your emphasis on priorities highlights the reality that sometimes achieving professional success and personal fulfillment may seem mutually exclusive. However, is there ever a scenario or strategy where you believe it's possible to attain both simultaneously?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: I believe that you can, but it's very rare because usually, it relies on relationships. Unless you have a partner that truly understands the kind of work, investment, energy, and focus required to excel professionally—especially as an entrepreneur and top performer—it can become a competing demand.
That's why you very seldom see a power couple where both individuals are giving each other the space to be top performers. So, I think on the personal side, it's a little more challenging. Professionally, it's only as far as you're willing to take the risks.
Question: You said, rarely, which means sometimes you can have both. Under what circumstances do you think it would be possible?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: Here's the best example I can give you. I remember watching a documentary about the son of Deepak Chopra, a man widely regarded as insightful and transformative. However, according to his own child, he was often absent, focused on "saving the world." So, when you take the courage to embark on a personal journey akin to the hero's journey, it often comes at the expense of personal success in relation to others. Because when you're succeeding professionally, you may feel fulfilled, as your achievements align with your personal goals. However, this often falls short for those who depend on you and need your presence. If you're truly committed to going the distance, you may find that very few couples can manage both partners operating at such high levels of performance. And even then, who's taking care of things at home? It takes significant effort to truly go the distance.
It's not impossible, but it would require significant emotional intelligence. Making such a partnership work necessitates emotional intelligence, allowing each other space to grow without trying to control one another. Recognizing that you may grow apart at times and then come back together is challenging. With so many demands and competing priorities for time and attention, it all comes back to priorities. It requires prioritizing the relationship and taking action to nurture it every single day.
Question: What is your vision and what are your priorities for Powerful Women Today?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: Starting with priorities, I consider myself fortunate to have a fully independent, successful son, which means I'm not juggling competing demands in my personal life.
This allows me to act purely from passion. Success, from a North American perspective, is undeniably hard work and can take a toll on individuals. The saying goes, to be in the top 1%, you have to do what 99% of people aren't willing to do. This ethos underpins the entire movement of Powerful Women Today—it's about understanding and empathizing with high achievers. I often liken it to an accelerator, where women who are already striving can find support. Meeting them where they are and accommodating their various learning and communication styles is crucial.
Our ecosystem is designed to be inclusive and leverage multimedia distribution, aided by generative AI technology —a capability that wasn't available five years ago. This technological advancement aligns with my doctoral dissertation, which explores using technology and AI to accelerate success, whether in careers or entrepreneurship. It doesn't necessarily mean you need partners; you can still be a solopreneur. However, working within a mastermind group, surrounded by people who understand your reality and push you to the next level, is invaluable. You need three "seats" at the table: one where you're a student, one where you're a peer, and one where you're a teacher. That's what we aim to cultivate at Powerful Women Today—a community constantly learning from one another. Someone might excel professionally, while another might have exceptional parenting or community skills to share. We all have our unique gifts and genius, and recognizing and leveraging these differences is what Powerful Women Today prioritizes every single day.
The significant shift for me right now, which I believe aligns with our cultural landscape, is the democratization of knowledge. Gone are the days when organizations charged exorbitant fees for information that others offer at a fraction of the cost. I believe the era of price gouging is ending, and unfortunately, women are often the targets of unscrupulous pricing by other women. In my experience, many of the negative business interactions have been with fellow women, who sometimes overprice their services. In the wake of the pandemic and the rise of AI, it's crucial to reassess pricing strategies to avoid being left behind.
Moving forward, I see the democratization of access to knowledge and success as a priority. This vision is reflected in our Success Academy, magazine, and our entire ecosystem.
We need to rethink the concept of charging for knowledge, considering it's readily available for free everywhere. This outdated approach needs reevaluation. At Powerful Women Today, we're moving towards a focus on empowering entrepreneurs with cutting-edge insights. We have entrepreneurial MBAs and intuitive minds who are dedicated to retraining. This shift is particularly crucial for Generation X and boomers, as millennials and zoomers are already navigating a different economic landscape. We must unlearn old paradigms and embrace the new economy, understanding where our value truly lies.
Question: I have a feeling that there's going to be a magazine on the New Economy for Women.
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: That's right, that's brilliant. We're totally doing that.
Question: At this point, I'm sure there are folks who are saying, "Okay, this Powerful Women Today thing, it's obviously more than just this magazine." Can you share some success stories or impactful moments and experiences from your work with the women and men who are members of Powerful Women Today to give us a little more tangible taste of what it is?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: Powerful Women Today means different things to everyone. Some people are coming for validation, some for comfort, clarity, or direction—a roadmap, a blueprint. People seek integration. We've had members experience executive mobility and thrive in new cultures. Through our platform, individuals have found incredible opportunities, speakers, coaches, and even pivoted their careers. Some have transitioned to solopreneurship or navigated through personal challenges like divorce. It means different things for different people. Our mission is to champion women's emotional and financial independence. How you define that is up to you.
Question: So, how does someone get involved with Powerful Women Today?
Dr. Carolina M. Billings: We have our global app where you can sign up for free. People can choose to start and explore our different offerings. You can be part of our organization at various levels, from free to higher tiers. It's all about assessing where you are and what you need, using academic and science-based assessments, to understand your current position accurately.
If I were to highlight one last thing, my greatest pride is that we started with the small pilot of Powerful Women Today several years ago. It served as the foundation for my doctoral dissertation. Everything we do, including our 10X activator program, has been rigorously tested and validated through academic research and machine learning (?) modeling. We have empirical evidence that our approach works, which is incredibly meaningful to me as someone with a background in science.
So, Powerful Women Today isn't just about what I think— it's about what we know, based on solid evidence and research.
Stacey Hall: Carolina, thank you for your time, your energy, your focus, and the priority you are giving to this advocacy!
