Welcome to A.J. Kelly Park and the National Premier Leagues Qld competition matches between Power and Redlands.
Today are our last senior matches at home for 2023 and I would like to pay tribute to the coaching staff and players on a season that had a massive turnaround. To be on the bottom of the competition just before the halfway point and then go undefeated in the league until the last game of the season has seen us avoid relegation and mathematically a slim chance of finals football.
The improvement in the playing squad since that turnaround is testament to the work ethic, commitment and desire of the players and coaching staff to maintain playing at the highest level in Queensland. To play at the level of NPL Qld is what many players and coaches aspire to and we are a very proud club to be in this competition.
We also saw several of our young academy players step up to play first team during the season and well done to Ben, Paul and the U23 team for preparing these players and also making finals football in 2023.
Our NPL Women will play finals football in 2023 and will play their final home match tomorrow against Gold Coast United. Congratulations to Mick Gallo, coaching staff and players for securing finals football after being promoted from the FQPL. We all look forward to seeing if the squad can get through the semi-finals and make the big Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium in September.
The Women’s World Cup has come to an end and the Matildas have certainly done our country proud. To finish 4th in the World and leave a lasting legacy for our game in our country will continue to expand women’s sport and we look forward to governments getting behind all clubs with their support at community level.
Our Hall of Fame and Rising Stars Awards Night was held last Wednesday. A fantastic night at the Mon Komo with 6 new Hall of Fame Inductees. Congratulations to Steven Forshaw, Luke Gauci, Suzie Boyle, Chelsea Martin, Bill Smith and Santo Perna. Their induction is to recognise representation for the club with high distinction over many years based on record, ability, integrity and character which all met the criteria of the selection panel.
Also, congratulations to the Power Academy Rising Star nominees and winners. These young male and female players are the next generation and were recognised for their hard work and commitment in 2023.
I would also like to welcome everyone here that are celebrating the Redcliffe City Silver Jubilee. Redcliffe City and Margate clubs played a major role in football on the Peninsula before the formation of Peninsula Power. Enjoy your afternoon and I am sure many old stories and memories will be relived over a beer or two.
Please enjoy the football and facilities here today and safe trip home afterwards.

Welcome Redlands to today’s last game of the season.
’s been a roller coaster of a year. To be at the bottom midway through the season to Australia Cup round of 32 defeat to Wellington Phoenix to where we are on the ladder today.
s 1 nil win away at 2nd placed MBU was really tough. We were good enough to grind out a win and keep our season alive. Redlands have been a tough team all year and today will be the toughest game of the year for us. Last time we met was a nil all draw. I would like to thank the players and coaching staff for their efforts this season. It has been an enjoyable few months with a great group of young men. It has been pleasing to see the team grow. Some of the football we have played on the back of hard work has been outstanding. You should all be very proud.
We say goodbye to one of our coaches Paul Blake. Paul has been a massive part of our team for the last 4 years. He leaves with 2 NPL league titles, 2 Foundation Cups and 3 National Round of 32 qualifications. All the best in your new adventures Paul and Sue.
Congratulations to the U23’s players and coaching staff on qualifying for the final series. With a young squad, some making their senior debuts this year. It is a great achievement and you should all be proud. The future looks very bright for Peninsula Power.
It’s great to see all the old Boys and past players down here today. Thank you for the foundations laid before us. The players wearing the jersey now, are wearing your jersey with Pride and passion. We hope you are proud of the team you are watching today.
Thank you to all our sponsors and supporters. We are Power.
Today will see two Power stalwarts feature in their last match for the club.
Sam Cronin has been with us for 6 seasons, starting in 2018 in our undefeated league campaign in the QPL. He has scored many important and memorable goals during his time and was a part of the QPL Championship and Premiership double and 2 x NPL Championships. Before today’s match, Sam sits on 89 games with 37 goals for the club.
We also bid farewell to our GK coach Paul Blake, who is relocating to Hervey Bay. Paul joined the club in 2020 and immediately impacted our fortunes with back to back NPL titles and three Australia Cup National Round qualifications in his 4 seasons with the club. We will miss both lads immensely and wish them well in the future.
Matches played (must make 30 fixture matches to qualify) Players in bold currently in squad
• Peninsula Power vs Redlands United
Peninsula Power can make the top four which is an amazing achievement considering where they were at early in the season. Sure, it’s going to take some results to go their way but neither of them are beyond the realm of possibility.
Redlands United gave BRY a pumping last week but they need to win this to ensure they don’t finish third last. It’s also possible but they’ll have to take their game to next level to do it. Surely they’ll be content to be back in NPL next year.
One of these teams has motivation to get something out of this game. One of these teams doesn’t. That should be the defining factor. Prediction: Peninsula 2-0
• Olympic FC vs Eastern Suburbs
Olympic FC will already be planning for next season in QPL and it’s not going to be easy coming straight back up. They’ve improved but not by much. This is a nothing contest but surely they’d like to get points from their last game.
Eastern Suburbs put the cat amongst the pigeons when they grabbed a point against Lions last week, ensuring the superpower club are still yet to qualify for the top four. If only they had shown the same grit all year.
Who knows? Hopefully we get a high scoring contest without a landslide result Pride and all that stuff on the line of course. Prediction: Olympic 2-1
• Brisbane City vs Gold Coast United
Brisbane City put the pressure right onto Lions with their last gasp winner against Wanderers last week. They deserve to make the four because they’ve done it from a tough position. And they have the spirit to do it.
Gold Coast United look for all the world to be heading out of the top four at the first attempt. They are a good side, we know that, but they aren’t as good as the other finallists. Will they be overwhelmed by City? I think so.
City will be ultra-pumped for this and GCU have a home semi final on the line. But you have to think the home team will be up for it. Prediction: City 2-1
• Sunshine Coast Wanderers vs Brisbane Roar Youth
Sunshine Coast Wanderers have been out of danger since Kevin Evans took over and also threatening everyone they play. They probably aren’t aware of it yet but three points should be a certainty in this game. See below for the reason.
Brisbane Roar Youth got thumped by Redlands last week for one simple reason. They are effectively playing an under 18s team because pre-season A-League training has taken all the stars. This week they’ll only play two players who would make the first squad if all were available.
Roar are just a practice squad at the moment. Four 15yos will be starting. These kids have promise but it’s too big a step yet. Prediction: SCW 3-0
• Lions FC vs Moreton Bay United
Lions FC might miss the finals and it would be good for the game if they did. Money doesn’t mean everything in the NPL. Of course, they’ll probably win this game, then go on to win the Grand Final which would be very boring for the neutrals.
Moreton Bay United have a home semi final on the line and that makes a difference when Wolter Park is the venue under discussion. And they’ve been playing well enough to beat anyone. A massive road trip for the club.
It’s always tough to win at Richlands. At least until this season. I fancy MBU featuring Kez Walters to make the round interesting. Prediction: MBU 2-1
• Rochedale Rovers vs Gold Coast Knights
Rochedale Rovers can mathematically make the four but it would be a real humdinger of a weekend with three results going their way and a six-goal turnaround in comparison with Lions. And of course their opponents are the Premiers.
Gold Coast Knights won the league which is what they really wanted and fully deserved. They are the best team in Queensland and also could be one of the best ever. Will they rest players? Almost certainly which could make a difference.
Nothing to play for in this game so let’s hope it’s entertaining. It’s Rovers 50th anniversary which might spur them on to greater heights. Prediction: Rovers 3-2

Tell me about your football career, where you started and what you have achieved. I started my football career at my local club at 6/7 years old and never looked back. I moved out at 16 to live in Preston to do a YTS and then signed for Colwyn Bay and was loaned to some non-league clubs for experience before signing for Barrow where I kicked on and scored 10 goals in my first 6 weeks and got top goal scorer in the conference premier before we won the league in 19/20 to move into league 2 which is massive for a club live Barrow. I then moved abroad to Malaysia at the start of 2021 for a new adventure which lead me to coming here to Australia.
• Describe your playing style. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
My strengths I think are finishing movement technical ability work rate and leadership. My weakness is women.
• Do you have any pregame routines or superstitions? No pregame superstitions, I’m just very organised with a hind of OCD.
• Describe one of your unforgettable football moments.
My unforgettable moment would be winning a league which in England is so hard to do professionally and my debut season at Barrow after making the step up and a lot of doubt I became the top goal scorer. I’m very proud of that.
• Who are your football heroes?
My football hero is probably Luis Suarez. Growing up as a Liverpool fan I loved everything about him.
• What are your interests and hobbies outside of football?
My hobbies would be spending time with family and friends and also being a huge foodie. I fancy myself in the kitchen and I love to cook.

The 23s have had some very good performances of late. 2 great wins 1 at home against Easts and 1 away against MBU. These two wins guarantee the boys semi-final football this year. A win in this last round cements third spot which is a good achievement for the squad.
The boys have shown resilience and character to achieve this with only 4 original squad members left playing now. A testament to the squad and the players that have stepped up for this to happen. Rip in today boys.
As we enter the final stages of the NPL season our u16’s continue to perform well. Our recent results have included a 1-1 all draw with leaders, Lions, a game in which we played nearly all the second half with 10 players after receiving a red card. This was played mid-week and was a great game to be involved in.
We followed up with a 0-0 draw away at City having a goal disallowed.
We are looking at getting Jake and Jaicub back from long term injuries in what should be a good end to a competitive season.
Thanks to all the parents for your support in what has been at times a difficult and frustrating season due to injuries, my ever reliable manager Eva and finally all the players who have given so much this year.
m very pleased to see our players continuing to challenge themselves and progress. With the end of the season around the corner and out of finals contention the players are still working very hard and approaching training and games with the right attitude and focus on our playing principles. In recent games we have seen the players play their best football and show how they have developed this year.
Over the last two weeks at training, we have been working on attacking centrally through our #9’s and retaining possession in our back third and looking for ways to play forward through the middle third and build attacking opportunities.
With 4 competition games and the end of season competition at the Premier Invitational on the Gold Coast, the players have a lot to look forward to before the season ends (and preseason starts!).
