Dear Daybreak Arts community,

Thank you so much for journeying alongside us this past year as we built partnerships, expanded our programming, and increased the number of artists we served in our Artist Collective!

One of my favorite parts from this past year was welcoming seven new artists during our summer new artist orientation in July 2022 which meant a total of nine new selling artists by fall 2022. It was such a huge joy this year to have so many unique and talented artists representing a variety of mediums join us! Read more about our 2022 inaugural New Artist Showcase on page 8 and attend our upcoming New Artist Showcase in fall 2023.

In addition to expanding our programming, we also refined our operations by developing and expanding our financial, organizational, and management policies, as well as filing our first long 990 tax return for FY '21-'22. Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee met bi-monthly to oversee our D.E.I. and accessibility commitments; and we also hosted our first organization-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training for Board and staff members facilitated by Kia Jarmon.

In March 2023, we celebrated our most successful gala to-date at Riverside Revival surpassing all of our revenue goals including sponsorships, ticket sales, and silent auction. We also met our sales goal and sold over $13k of original artwork by our artists and paid out over $7,000 from one night!

Thank you to everyone who invested in our artists in '22-'23 I'm thrilled to share an exciting new way we're committing to increasing our artist payments this fiscal year on page 24 I look forward to connecting with you more this year!

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR N i c o l e M i n y a r d 3/27

MISSION, VISION, & CORE VALUES

Daybreak Arts is a social enterprise nonprofit that creates artistic and economic opportunities for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity by providing them access to the creative resources needed to achieve personal fulfillment and success.

VISION

Daybreak Arts shines light on issues surrounding housing insecurity and strives to provide those who are systematically excluded from opportunity the means to explore their creativity and gain the economic mobility to reclaim access to housing, health, and community. Daybreak Arts also aims to highlight the creative talents of people impacted by homelessness in order to broaden perspectives and foster meaningful and equitable relationships across communities.

CORE VALUES Community Power

We believe that effective solutions are developed through shared power in decision making, and we are committed to providing all people in our organization the opportunity to contribute their ideas and skills so that everyone has a say in the decisions that affect them

Accessibility

Community Accountability

We know that, at times, we may fall short of our ideals and are committed to creating and upholding an environment of accountability for our (in)actions and their impact. We will accept accountability for harm, address conflicts transparently, regularly discuss how we can improve, and participate in reconciliation processes

We acknowledge that everyone has unique lived experiences of discrimination and oppression and individuals will need access to a diverse array of resources to be successful. We are committed to meeting people where they are, as well as maintaining and updating our Accessibility Plan which outlines the ways we will provide equal access to resources, tools, information, and experiences so that all people can participate in our community with minimal barriers to engagement

Self- and Community-Care

We believe that creativity, boundaries, and consent are important parts of self- and community-care and that there are often barriers to accessing opportunities for care We are committed to offering space (physical, emotional, spiritual, etc.) in which all people can safely explore art, healing, and community

Personal Growth & Fulfillment

We understand that each person has their own goals and idea of fulfillment, while often lacking the resources to achieve those goals We are committed to promoting selfdetermination, fulfillment, and growth through art and entrepreneurship access.

Collective Liberation

We understand that systems of oppression are interconnected and purposefully limit access to knowledge and resources. We commit to working collaboratively with other movements for change in order to achieve a world where each person is acknowledged as worthy of dignity and respect

NEW ARTIST SHOWCASE

In September 2022, we featured seven new Daybreak Artists during our inaugural New Artist Showcase:

Brooke Cheryl Harris Liz

In July 2022, we held a new artist orientation where we onboarded several new creatives all of whom worked throughout the summer toward their debut at our inaugural New Artist Showcase in September 2022. While new Daybreak Artists, Antonio Booker and Amanda Harrod, did not exhibit during the New Artist Showcase, they did join us later in the fall (totaling nine new selling artists in FY '22-'23! Community members were invited to the New Artist Showcase to view and purchase the artists’ work before the work went online.

Congratulations to all of our artists who exhibited at their first Daybreak Arts show!

“I’m really excited to be with local artists that have also experienced homelessness and have the same artistic interests. I’m excited to showcase my art for others to see because I haven’t had a chance due to my situation. Daybreak Arts is a great place to meet other artists and have the space to create and receive feedback. I’m very thankful for that.”

INCOME OPPORTUNITIES

As our organization grows, we continue to expand the number of ways through which our artists can earn income through their creative talents. We're proud to share our total '22-'23 revenue in this category was $2,300, and we look forward to coordinating more opportunities in '23-'24 to grow this number.

PAIDTEACHINGOPPORTUNITIES

To facilitate teaching artists opportunities by our artists in '22-'23, we partnered with for-profit businesses like HCA Healthcare in October '22 (Teaching Artist, Sam Fulks) and April '23 (Teaching Artist, AM HASSAN) and nonprofit events like the Fall (Teaching Artists, Kateri, Beth, Gwen) and Spring (Teaching Artists, Gwen Cheryl) TN Craft Fair Kid's Tent.

9 YEARS OF IMPACT

2014 - 2023 CUMULATIVE REPORT

Since 2014, we'e earned over $146k from art revenue sources including original art sales, reproductions, teaching artist revenue, live painting, and intellectual property licenses. With this revenue, we've been able to pay out over $80k to artists experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. The remaining revenue was reinvested back into our organization to continue providing quality supplies, space, education, and programming to our artists at no cost to them.

ART REVENUE: $146,716.66

ARTIST PAYMENTS: $80,595.41

ARTISTS SERVED: 120+

COMMUNITY MEMBERS ENGAGED AROUND THE WORLD: 40,000+

INCREASING OUR IMPACT THIS NEXT YEAR!

Thanks to our dedicated donors and grant funders over the past 9 years, in '23-'24 we're able to increase our artists' original artwork sales commission to 70% (formerly 60%). This change allows us to better support our artists’ creative journeys and ensure they receive more income for their incredible work.

But we need your help to make it sustainable!

Celebrate our 9th anniversary as a nonprofit with us this summer by making a one-time or recurring donation. Your support will allow us to provide our artists with essential resources, workshops, and exhibition opportunities while giving them a greater percentage of the original artwork sales putting more income directly into their pockets.

IN LOVING MEMORY

Honoring the community members we lost last year:

Trenton Eric Allen

Daybreak Artist

Daybreak Artist, Trenton Eric Allen, passed away in March 2023. We are deeply saddened by the loss of such a talented member of our community, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to all of Trenton's family and friends.

Trenton contributed his unique perspective and creativity to our community, and his absence will be felt by all of us. We are honored to have had the opportunity to work alongside him and to showcase his beautiful photography and handcrafted jewelry.

Virginia Deirdre (Didi) Sheen

Daybreak Volunteer and Donor

Daybreak Volunteer, Didi Sheen passed away in September 2022. She was a dedicated volunteer who generously gave her time, energy, and resources to support our organization and our artists. Her passion for the arts was evident in the many pieces of art she purchased to support our artists and her attendance at our galas.

She became one of our first delivery volunteers in 2020, helping make sure our artists still had the supplies they needed to create during the pandemic.

As we say goodbye to Didi, we know that her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched and the many ways in which she enriched our community. At her memorial event, the donations raised were matched by her daughter, Regan Sheen Naumovski's employer Dell Nashville-totaling a $12k gift to Daybreak Arts.
