DEVELOPING TOMORROW’S LEADERS The mission of Positive Impact New York (P.I.N.Y) is to develop tomorrow's leaders by preparing them for life in high school, college and beyond. P.I.N.Y was established to provide students and their families with support, as they transition through the different levels of their scholastic journeys. This year end report highlights the accomplishments Positive Impact New York accomplished in 2018 as well as a look into the future as we continue to provide quality academic and social opportunities for our students. This past July, PINY moved it's program to Suffolk County in an effort assist more students and their families. To help accomplish this goal, PINY established the M.A.A.P (My Academic and Athletic Plan), Bridge and Next Level Mentoring programs. M.A.A.P is a student-athlete consultation service that provides them with assistance with reviewing transcripts and schedules and ensuring that all clients are in compliance with NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) guidelines. The Bridge Program is designed to assist student-athletes make the transition from middle school to high school. Incoming freshmen have to deal with many new challenges on and off the court. The Bridge Program will introduce student-athletes to relevant topics that will teach them practices and habits they can use during their high school years. Student-Athletes who enter the Student-Athlete Bridge Program will be tracked throughout high school to ensure that IF an athletic scholarship is offered, then they will be in a position to accept the scholarship because they are in compliance with the NCAA. The Next Level Mentoring program is designed to open the young minds of middle school age (6th -8th grades) students to new possibilities, to build an appreciation for the value of education before they enter high school, and to allow them to explore areas of interest for future studies. The Next Level Mentoring Program will help assure that middle school students will be less likely to become another high school dropout statistic or be involved in at-risk afterschool activities. Please take a look through our annual report to learn more about our program’s achievements in 2018 and how we will look to continue making a positive impact in our community. Respectfully, Terrell Dozier

PILLARS OF SUCCESS

PILLARS LEADERSHIP

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Bridge Program participants will gain and develop leadership skills throughout their experience in the Bridge Program. Programs designed specifically for each of their four years will ensure that student-athletes leave high school with a strong sense of self and leadership potential as they continue on to the next level of their education.

Positive Impact New York and the Bridge Program as a whole are dedicated to providing exceptional services for all participants. Through a variety of programs and opportunities, Bridge Program studentathletes gain the skills and confidence needed to excel in the classroom and beyond. We are dedicated to the development of our student-athletes as whole persons, with the ultimate goal of graduating high school and matriculating to college.

ATHLETIC SUCCESS

COLLEGE MATRICULATION

The Bridge Program will assist its student-athletes in achieving athletic success. Topics such as training, nutrition, effort will be discussed to provide student-athletes with a definition of athletic success that is motivating, controllable and will encourage our student-athletes to enjoy their athletic experience and inspire them to strive towards their goals with commitment, confidence and courage.

The Bridge Program does not end after high school graduation. Positive Impact New York along with the Bridge Program works to ensure that our student-athletes have an open line of communication as they go though their journey and are prepared for college graduation. This includes major exploration, skill-building, networking, interviewing, experiential learning as well as any advice needed dealing with the athletic experience.

Next Level Mentoring (NLM) is a youth mentoring program under the umbrella of Positive Impact New York, Inc. providing mentoring programs for middle school students at Riverhead Charter School (RCS). NLM was created in the memory of Gordon Hamilton, a personal friend to Executive Director, Terrell Dozier. Before his unfortunate passing in 2005, Gordon often spoke of plans for a program that would influence youth throughout his home state of Connecticut. Positive Impact New York will honor Gordon’s legacy that was cut short and continue the work he started. The program formed a partnership with RCS providing quality mentoring for 7 middle school students. NLM's goal is to foster a commitment to RCS students that will promote academic success, pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in the future. Only through personal relationships can a sense of individual responsibility be reestablished that will give our youth the commitment to follow through on path to adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment. The goal of the program is to prevent youths from having a turbulent transition to adulthood and offer positive support system to avoid the pitfalls that can derail their lives. The focus is slightly different at each level but the goal remains the same; empower the young person to make positive changes in his life. NLM’s mentoring program meets bi-weekly and has planned activities such as academic support, book club and recreational activities to help strengthen the relationships between RCS students and their mentor(s). Over time, NLM will create a learning environment that will be an invaluable resource to young people, aspiring mentors and the community at large.

M.A.A.P is a student-athlete consultation service that provides them assistance with reviewing transcripts and schedules and ensuring that all clients are in compliance with NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) guidelines.  M.A.A.P participants receive the following services: Individual Consultation: We will assist and educate the student-athlete and their family in understanding the NCAA Initial Eligibility process. The consultation will include a personalized report on a student-athlete’s core-courses and test scores, noting any particular deficiencies, and drawing up a plan for meeting NCAA eligibility requirements. With the NCAA initial eligibility standards increasing, the time is now for enlisting the services of M.A.A.P. School Choice Assistance: M.A.A.P. uses The College Coaches Online software. This software is similar to College Board or Naviance, but geared toward the student-athlete. You can search schools based on academics, preferences, and sports level. College Coaches Online not only saves countless hours researching colleges and universities, but allows you to narrow your focus of schools quickly. We can help student-athletes find the colleges and universities that match their academic and athletic ability, while allowing you to select a school size, cost and location. If your goal is to receive an athletic scholarship or have the opportunity to compete in college athletics and receive an outstanding college education, this will be a great tool to help you! Ongoing Personal Guidance: All consulting after the individual consultation will be done through the Edufii app which is available on all iPhone and Android phones. Through this app you will be able to communicate with me and get answers to all your questions (camps, summer teams, training programs, injuries, recruiting, etc). We will respond within 24 hours.

THROUGH THE YEARS 8TH GRADE

FRESHMAN YEAR

Student-athletes will enter the Bridge Program while still in middle school. We believe that this is the most important year in the academic and athletic process. All 8th grade student-athletes will be required to participate in the PINY Bridge Symposium that will utilize workshops, guest speakers, self-reflection and small group discussion to assist in helping the student-athletes effectively lead themselves during their transition year into high school.

The Bridge Program will assist in helping first year student-athletes effectively lead themselves during this transition year in high school. The Learning to Lead element of this program focuses on Effective Transition Skills, Role Acceptance, Being a Good Teammate, and Initial Leadership Development. Freshmen will continue to participate in the PINY Bridge Symposium and continue building their skills towards high school graduation and a possible athletic scholarship.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

JUNIOR YEAR

During their sophomore year, the Bridge Program will look to help sophomores begin to explore and understand their roles as future team leaders through activities that challenge them individually and in groups. Sophomores will continue to participate in the PINY Bridge Symposium and continue building their skills towards high school graduation and a possible athletic scholarship.

During the junior year, the Bridge Program centers on preparing juniors to take on future leadership roles within their teams. Topics include Core Values, Leadership Self-Evaluation, Being an Effective Leader, Developing a Leadership Plan, Role of the Leader and Team Relations. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS PATHWAYS PROGRAM A HUGE SUCCESS! Positive Impact New York hosted its inaugural Pathways Program for the Next Level Mentoring Program participants at Riverhead Charter School. The program was designed to assist our students about the importance of planning for transitioning from one level to another and using positive energy as a gift. First, Author Russ Williams will shared his experience and insight of how to develop a gameplan for many of life's difficult transitions that teenagers might face. Some transitions of life that Russ explored in his presentation included Transitioning from middle school to high school and the Transition from “Boys” to “Men.” Then, Life Coach, Chris Williams Young gave our students tools and strategies that will enhance personal growth. Chris' presentation touched on positive energy being a gift which will enable our young students to move beyond road blocks and encourage them to be successful global citizens.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS NEXT LEVEL VISITS STONY BROOK On June 7th, our Next Level Mentoring students paid a visited Stony Brook University to tour the campus and athletic facilities. First, Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development and Life Skills/SWA Courtney Rickard led our students through a learning style questionnaire that gauged how our students best learn. Our students all want to attend college and understanding how they learn will be a vital tool in obtaining success. Next, Head Men's Basketball Coach, Jeff Boals and three of his players, Elijah Olaniyi, Akwasi Yeboah and Andrew Garcia led a spirited panel discussion with our students. Some key points Coach Boals touched on were hardwork, have a positive attitude and to listen. The players spoke about what they could have done better in high school and touched on topics such as time management, procrastination, community service and respect for others. Associate Athletics Director for Facilities, Operations and Capital Planning, Adam McLeod guided us on a tour of Stony Brook’s amazing athletic facilities, including the Island Federal Credit Union Arena, Dubin Family Athletic Performance Center and the Stony Brook University Broadcast room. Our students then reconnected with Courtney Rickard who discussed what it took to gain admission into a competitive university like Stony Brook. Students then discussed the results of their learning style diagnostic, giving them the opportunity to think about the way they learn. She also touched on NCAA requirements for the students who had aspirations to play sports on a collegiate level. It became clear that working hard in school now will make it much easier in the future!

We are so very grateful to Courtney Rickard, Coach Boals, Adam McLeod, Tiffany Landau and the student-athletes at Stony Brook for being gracious hosts and making this tour possible!
