Let’s get the party started! By BARBARA DYER

FOR five years Jeannette Rainbow and Daphne Salt have been planning the John Oxley bicentenary celebration which launches this month at Mt Seaview. That’s more time than the explorer himself spent planning his expedition from Bathurst, east to what is now the Hastings District. It was there Oxley climbed Mount Seaview, saw a river, which he called the Hastings, and followed it through to present-day Wauchope. So, it is appropriate that on the weekend of September 21-23, the bicentennial celebrations of Oxley’s 1818 expedition will begin at Mount Seaview. Jeannette, from the Wauchope District

Historical Society said she had been determined that Wauchope and the Upper Hastings would have a celebration, even after the original council bicentenary steering group formed in 2013 ‘had died a natural death’. The program created is comprehensive, taking in all aspects of Oxley’s journey, with one notable exception. “We had been very keen for the local indigenous people to have a role in this event,” said Jeannette. • Continued Page 7 Pictured right: Jeannette Rainbow and Daphne Salt in full dress rehearsal for the Governor’s Ball on October 6, when guests are invited to wear historic dress.

Mary’s blossoming life By SUE PATERICK

Co-leaders of the U3A Macleay Social Gardeners, Mary Sweeney and David Wood, taking the time to smell the flowers in Mary’s lovely garden

A garden group is a great melting pot for “gardeners, who are such giving people, and there are always lots of discussions and questions. Gardening is also a good leveller.

GARDENING for the Macleay Valley’s Mary Sweeney is a great motivator to get active and outside in nature with the birds, butterflies and animals. On any given day you will find Mary and husband, Terry, buzzing among their garden’s flowers, always busy weeding, pruning, planting, feeding, mulching and watering. “The physical and mental activity of gardening is so good for your health and wellbeing because you’re outside in the fresh air in nature just thinking of nothing but plants,” Mary said. “It can be for all ages and the pleasure you get from gardening is the same if you garden is a small space with pots or a large garden on an acreage.” Mary has been a gardener all her life and takes inspiration from the countryside. Originally from the United Kingdom, she was used to a typical English garden so it was an adjustment to move to Australia 40 years ago. Mary lived in the Blue Mountains first before moving to the Macleay Valley 11 years ago. While a challenge to adapt to a different climate and plants, she thought it was wonderful to find out about all the new plants. “I grew up with fields of primroses and daffodils but here in Australia there is as much beauty in a carpet of flannel flowers,” Mary said. “In the Mid North Coast’s glorious climate you can grow almost anything in any weather not like in the mountains where it was cold, cold, cold.” Apart from loving the Macleay’s blessed weather, she loves its beautiful environment, its bush, beaches, waterways and mountains but most of all its friendly people. Mary doesn’t have a favourite plant, although she is partial to salvias because these hardy flowers attract birds and bees. She just loves whatever is in season and what greets her each time she goes outside. Like all gardeners though, Mary has learnt how to garden through trial and error. Mary soon realised that growing tulips on the Mid North Coast just wasn’t going to work, but acknowledged the need to acclimatise to the area where you live. “Go around the neighbourhood and see what’s growing and in what aspect,” she advised. “Also talk to other gardeners to see what they’re doing and ask for cuttings.” Mary also advises budding gardeners or even well-established ones to join a garden group because it is a fun and social way to learn from others. “A garden group is a great melting pot for gardeners, who are such giving people,

and there are always lots of discussions and questions,” she said. “Gardening is also a good leveller.” Mary just loves people who garden, so much so she is co-leader of the local Kempsey Macleay Valley U3A garden group with David Wood. Called the U3A Macleay Social Gardeners, the group started three years ago because there was an interest from other gardeners in the valley. This popular green-thumbed group has up to 50 members and is still growing. It meets weekly on Thursdays and has talks from fellow gardeners and often from guest speakers as well. The U3A Macleay Social Gardeners also visit

other members’ gardens three times per term and sometimes undertake a bus trip out of the region. This term they plan to visit a garden in groovy Nabiac, have lunch and head home via the Bonny Hills nursery. “We are a very enthusiastic group because we want people to garden,” Mary said. To feed our gardening appetites this spring she is also part of a committee that is helping to organise a cavalcade of open gardens called Garden Rambles in the Macleay. This event will be held on Saturday October 13 and Sunday October 14 with all proceeds going to local charities like the PCYC, FAWNA and the Kempsey District Hospital Auxiliary.

“It’s a gardener’s paradise to view gardens in the valley,” Mary said. “They are all very diverse, some are specialised, some large scale, some small but every one of the gardeners shares a passion for gardening.” Like Mary, most of us love visiting other people’s gardens to see what they are doing and to find inspiration. “You always walk away with new ideas,” she said. Mary’s garden advice for spring is to feed, mulch and water so your plants are ready for the long, hot summer ahead. Growing plants is not Mary’s only love, she also enjoys floral art and actually won gold in the Chelsea Flower Show many years ago with a friend. She has also exhibited her exquisite floral displays in the World Flower Show. LETTERS

LETTER WEEK OF THE

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.

Hitting nail on the head CONGRATULATIONS on your up-to-date analysis of our (?) Federal Government (From The Heart 23-8-18). You have “hit the nail on the head” and expressed the views and feelings of so many Australians during the recent “shenanigans” at our expense, both financially and politically. Doubtless, there are many former politicians currently wondering what has happened to their ideals of working for the people who elected them to Parliament.

I will not list the things that upset our household - they have been covered in your editorials many times and are heard and seen daily in other media outlets. And we all thought the current leadership in the USA was a bit of a problem! Regards (and keep up the good work). Jenni Carrington Collombatti

WHILE\ I agree with Harry Creamer on most points, I still believe that we should have one coal fired back up for power until all the renewables are fully operational. How long is going to take to halt the climate change or slow it? Meanwhile our supplies of water get smaller and smaller. If you are in the middle of the desert you would not be wanting power, you would need water in order to exist. Forty years ago, a very forward thinking South Australian Premier, Don Dunstan, wanted

to finish the Ghan to Darwin, and, at the same time, put in a pipe line alongside the railway to bring much needed water to the south. Unfortunately, nobody was interested. All parties in Federal and State governments should be looking at pipelines from the north, and dams where they know there is a good catchment. Care, however, should be taken if damming rivers for fear of starving the lower reaches. Betty Collins Port Macquarie

Teale and his team at Telstra Business Centre (TBC), especially Jade Cremer the tech who has the best attitude in the world. Think about it. TBC is the local ‘go between’ for businesses that use Telstra services. They deal with the irate Telstra business customers (me and a cast of thousands) and somehow make the relocation happen as seamlessly as possible, so that our businesses have as little interruption to services as is possible. The process is a rigmarole, very frustrating for all concerned and takes loads of planning. Jade is the guy that gets to do the relocation, therefore he fronts the irate customers and fixes their problems. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to do it. Jade, you deserve a medal! Matt, Matt and Sarah at Colourworks: Another successful trip for the printer – no damage, no drama. Just how I like things. Thank you! Gavin from Romer Locks: Within an hour of informing the real estate agent the locks were dodgy; Gavin was here, and the locks were fixed within two hours. Wow! That’s service! Rene Miles from Milestone IT: Thank you for putting up with my total ignorance when it comes to IT and making operations as simple as is humanly possible. As always, good old-fashioned prompt, efficient and reliable service. Thank you. A massive thanks to Gary Hicks (Gary Hicks Electrical) for all his moral support and his mad electrical skills! I have power points in useful places for the first time in my life! Thank you. Finally, thanks to the YLI team. Holly who has always got my back and I hers. Also to our production team Pat and Mark – we’ve been flying blind this week – no communication from Thursday to late Monday – but once again we did it and met deadline. Thank you! Now where did I pack that?

TO Busways for finding my lost card which I had dropped under the seat during a particularly stressful time. Not only did they telephone me when it was found but I was able to collect it from a driver at my local stop the next morning. Thank you again.

WOW! What a week that was! Last weekend was the grand finale of a mammoth month of moving – what a mission! It started last month – sorting what was needed out of two house lots to go to one small house. what’s rubbish, what can be donated and what can be used at the new office or stored. You know the drill. Oh! The joys of moving! All things considered the moving of stuff wasn’t too bad – only one mishap. Let’s just say my less than 12-month old fridge/freezer is more than likely going on a one-way, all expenses paid trip to the tip in the very near future. I’m going to surprise you all! There were hardly any dramas at all – not in the scheme of things anyway. We had a couple of little incidents – no phones or internet until Monday morning (instead of Friday afternoon) which in turn meant we couldn’t install the printer or computers etc., but it was no big deal. You’re reading this aren’t you? We had a little issue with the front door – the key wouldn’t unlock it, unless it felt like unlocking the door – sorted in ½ hour. The biggest issue? I can’t get my idea for a spectacular feature wall in the office to work! It’ll happen eventually. It’s just frustrating to say the least! All in all – the move was a breeze! But it wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of some amazing local businesses who supported us through the move. What a bunch of legends! I’d really like to express my sincere thanks to those people – you were all incredible! In no particular order, big bouquets go to: Luke, Ben and Lesley at Raine & Horne Commercial: fantastic service, easy to deal with and every little problem has been rectified within a couple of hours. Thank you. The team at A&R Removals: prompt, efficient, friendly service – all done and dusted in no time. Peter and Darryl you were brilliant to deal with and Ian, thank you so much for organising it all at such short notice. I couldn’t recommend A&R Removals more highly – absolutely brilliant!

Saving the planet over a cuppa By SUE PATERICK MACLEAY Living Sustainably (MLS) is hosting a Nature Networking Morning Tea at picturesque Gladstone on Saturday, September 15, as a way to strengthen connections between local conservation groups. Founder of MLS, Genna Furber, said the aim of the event was to connect other nature conservation volunteers with each other so they can share their achievements, challenges and goals. “There is a lot of amazing work being done in the Macleay and Hastings shires and we’d love to hear more about what others have achieved over the decades to give us hope and inspiration,” she said. “Apart from sharing ideas, it will be an opportunity to socialise, strengthen allies for the future and celebrate wins.” MLS also hopes the event will facilitate the sharing of projects and upcoming events, and will identify opportunities for collaboration, support and recruiting volunteers. Gauging interest in ongoing environmental gatherings, canvassing ideas for future events, finding solutions to identified problems and creating an online database of all grassroots conservation groups and key contacts in the region are also major objectives. Groups invited to attend the morning tea include local Dune Care organisations, Save Our Macleay River, South West Rocks Plastic Wise, Climate Change Australia Hastings, the Knitting Nannas, Kempsey Local Aboriginal Land Council and the Clybucca Custodians Group. Kempsey Shire Mayor Liz Campbell and Council’s Waste Manager Gavin Hughes will also be attending the morning tea. Be part of the Oxley Bicentenary celebrations THE bicentenary of John Oxley’s expedition is here, with a packed program of events beginning with the official launch of the celebrations at Mount Seaview, from where Oxley’s explorers first spotted the region that now encompasses Port Macquarie. From September through to the end of October, events have been planned from Wauchope, across Port Macquarie and down the coast to Camden Haven with local historical societies ensuring no opportunity is

lost to commemorate the bicentenary. Members of the Hastings Museums and Heritage Group, including the Port Macquarie Historical Society, Wauchope District Historical Society and Camden Haven Historical Society have spent months meeting and discussing events, putting together an impressive program. For the full list of events go to: www. visitwauchope.com.au/page-1851564

THE official opening of the 1818 expedition will be held at Mount Seaview on the weekend of September 21-23, hosted by the Wauchope District Historical Society. Guests can immerse themselves in the weekend, on the edge of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, take a 4WD trip to Jasper Range and Echo Point, and hear enthusiasts show and tell of their experiences researching, retracing, reimagining and writing of the challenges and

accomplishments of Oxley and his team. The official opening will be by Mayor Peta Pinson with a book launch on the 21st at 7pm of John Oxley, a new perspective, by Rob Tickle. On Saturday at 11.30am, Richard Grimmond will be available with his book I went with John Oxley and at 4pm, Botany of the expedition, by Dr Ian Telford followed by Daphne Salt at 5pm with Oxley’s way today.

Wauchope is ready to shine

Take the easier road HOW John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley would have loved to have had a 4WD at his disposal 200 years ago when he was slashing his way through inhospitable bushland, with what must have felt like summer sun beating down on his head, and not a pub in sight. Those taking part in the bicentenary events can add another adventure to their ‘to do’ list, with a 4WD excursion to the lookout on the top of Bago Mountain. It was from there, the explorer, accompanied by botanist Charles Fraser, spotted what would become the penal settlement of Port Macquarie. And he clearly appreciated the view. In 1818 Oxley wrote: “October 3. Soon after daylight, accompanied by the botanist, I returned to the peaked hill, leaving the horses with Mr. Evans to proceed to the north-east. Certainly, a more beautiful and interesting view is not often seen”. No need to slash through the bush on October 3 when Australian Wilderness Tours’ air-conditioned vehicles will take ‘explorers’ to Bago Mountain. “Bookings are essential,” said organiser Jeannette Rainbow of the Wauchope District Historical Society. “We will meet at Wauchope Town Clock at 8.15am for an 8.30am and the cost is $45 per person. Contact Jeannette Rainbow on 0424 226 258.

Take in the same spectacular views that confronted John Oxley 200 years ago

BY now everyone has heard of the bicentenary of Oxley’s exploration of this region, but it seems there are still more stories to be uncovered about that historic period. Local author Richard Grimmond was born in 1927 and, on his 90th birthday, launched the book I Went With John Oxley. “I wanted to give copies to my children and grandchildren,” Richard said. It is particularly relevant now as the bicentenary celebrations approach. I Went With John Oxley is the story of John Oxley’s trip of exploration along the Macquarie River in 1818 searching for the inland sea, as told in the first person by Richard Watts, one of the convicts who accompanied him. They left Wellington depot with 19 horses

and two boats and, after a long trek along the Macquarie River they ran into marshes which made further progress impossible, so they left their boats and headed eastward. Travelling was difficult through mud and quicksand but they eventually came to open country and climbed Mount Seaview. From their high vantage point they saw the sea, and continued down the Hastings River to arrive at, and subsequently name, Port Macquarie. “It was providential that they found a boat on a beach, and the convicts carried this boat on their shoulders, crossing many rivers and inlets until they safely reached Port Stephens,” Richard Grimmond writes. “The story tells of the anxieties and joys experienced by the convicts.”

WAUCHOPE might be a smaller centre, but it has a big heart and right now it’s putting everything it’s got into the celebration of the Oxley Bicentenary. “This is an exciting time here in Wauchope,” said Daphne Salt from the Wauchope District Historical Society. “It’s been 200 years in the making and as is evident from the program, there is a lot of community participation.” That would be an understatement as enthusiasts have pulled out all the stops, putting together a huge program on a shoestring budget. “There has been no funding or sponsorship forthcoming so everything is self-funded,” said Daphne. “The cost has been kept low to cover expenses of the functions only, not to make a profit. “We in Wauchope have been preparing for the Oxley Bicentenary for several years. “Our focus is on this historic event rather than on the subsequent penal establishment which was set up thanks to John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley.”

New perspective to exploration Richard Grimmond was born in Newcastle in 1927 and was Principal of Finley and Port Macquarie High Schools as well as a Foundation member of the Port Macquarie Historical Society in 1956. He was named Citizen of the Year in 2010 and awarded the Lions Club Melvin Jones Award in 2013. Richard has several books in Port Macquarie library, namely Mary’s Secret, Harriet’s Boy, Terrymidgee and I Went With John Oxley as well as several stories in My Wonderful Hastings, People of the Two Rivers and Beyond the Three Brothers. The author is also a member of the Lions Club, the Historical Society and is interested in local history, writing and bushwalking.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Recently I was lucky enough to take a short holiday break, where I had the opportunity to put the feet up and recharge the batteries. Many of us take an annual holiday where we enjoy different cultures, see and try new things and it is always great fun getting away from home, reflecting on our lives and thinking about our future. I really enjoy meeting new people when travelling, and it seems that almost everyone knows where Port Macquarie is, with many people I speak to having visited our region before. Some have a close connection or fond memories, having enjoyed family holidays here as a child, or having visited family who have chosen to

live the Port Macquarie-Hastings dream. People often comment on how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area, how clean it is and that there seems to be a real sense of pride in looking after what we’ve got. And do you know what? They’re absolutely right! Over the years I’ve taken many trips within Australia, and whilst I love the travel, returning home really does make me appreciate how good we’ve got it here. Coincidentally, on my recent trip I bumped into 20 fellow travellers who were also from the Port MacquarieHastings (you know who you are!), and it was great to chat about our lives and why we all choose to live where we do. The common theme is definitely ‘opportunity’… our region offers the opportunity to bring up our families

pmhc.nsw.gov.au in a safe, clean environment, there are many schooling, study and work opportunities available, and as we enter our latter years we have the opportunity to access services and live out our lives in a pristine environment, with a year-round temperate climate. We know we are experiencing massive growth right across our region, and it is really important that we continue to work together to protect what we’ve got, and balance this with providing new homes and community facilities for our growing population. We truly are living the dream, so let’s keep up the good work and think about how every one of us can do our bit to keep the Port Macquarie-Hastings beautiful. Until next week, Peta

5 years to plan Oxley party “ We will also

have helicopter flights over Mount Seaview so people can see what John Oxley saw

Jeanette Rainbow, Daphne Salt and Kathleen Dowler are ready for the John Oxley bicentenary celebrations The Bicentenary Cup greyhound race meeting on September 29 at Wauchope will have races named after members of the exploration party. Entry is free. A race day on October 13 will reflect the role horses played to the early explorers. Other events range from a cricket match for the opening of the season on October 6, to the Oxley Bicentenary Motor Cycle Ride on October 27. “A highlight for me, though, will be the Governor’s Ball on October 6, with about 150 tables booked at the Wauchope RSL and guests invited to wear historic dress,” said Jeannette. “We will have a four-piece band from Maitland playing everything from old time to new vogue. “Of course, ‘Governor Lachlan Macquarie’ and his wife Elizabeth will be there.

“A sword bearer will bring in distinguished party so there will be a bit of theatre.” Jeannette said Wauchope had a wonderful community spirit, and the most rewarding part of the event would be seeing people participate and enjoy the program. Another highlight she said would be the bicentennial campfire yarns, hosted by five members of the sesquicentenary held 50 years ago. “These five who attended the 150-year celebration, will be at our Mount Seaview official opening,” she said. “We will also have helicopter flights over Mount Seaview so people can see what John Oxley saw.” Also attending will be descendants of John Oxley, George Evans and Dr John Harris coming from Griffith, Bowral and Campbelltown.

From Page 1 “They are part of this history, and I was keen for the whole truth to be told. “There is the other side to this expedition and we would have loved the Aboriginal people to be involved. “We did ask; we want their side of the story. “It is as important as our side. “We wanted to acknowledge the killings; the sadness and the truth behind these early expeditions. “It’s the flip side to what we are celebrating. “I saw it as an opportunity to reconcile. That is my position.” Jeannette said the bicentenary would bring history alive, bringing together people in communities across the Hastings and involving them in a wide range of events. And it’s been done on a shoestring budget. “We have done the program with very little financial help,” said Jeannette. “We got no grant money, so we have costed it and kept affordable for everyone.” Helping make history relevant, have been a couple of books written by Rod Tickle and Richard Grimmond, who have taken the story to the schools. “We have tried to cover all the bases in our program and have packed in a lot of important things,” Jeannette said. “Some people may not be aware of the significance of the greyhound and horse racing days. “It’s a little-known fact that six greyhound dogs came with the exploration party. Without those dogs some men may have died as the greyhounds were used to run down roos. “The dogs all arrived safely at what was to become Port Macquarie, but then something happened. “Reports describe the dogs’ back legs going, before the animals died. “Today we know the dogs had ticks.”

7

“And we’ll be having church services – it should be noted that non-attendance was a flogging offence,” Jeannette laughs. This week Jeannette and Daphne visited Tamworth and Walcha on the route Oxley took, to attend celebrations there. “I know some people say the real celebrations should be in two years when the penal settlement was established,” Jeannette said. “But this is a golden opportunity. Without Oxley in 1818, there would be nothing to celebrate in two years’ time.” And ensuring all bases are truly covered, on Friday, September 28, Wauchope will have an Explorers Day for business houses and op-shops ‘to draw people to our town’, says Jeannette, recently made a life member of the historic society. “I have been in Wauchope and Hastings for 60 years; I love the area; I believe in this place.”

THE COWPER REPORT

With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

Children must be protected IT is National Child Protection Week and as reluctant as we naturally are to even contemplate how vile crimes against children are, we all need to participate by acknowledging how important this issue is. The biggest problem historically, and right now, in relation to child abuse is ignorance and silence. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has gone a very long way towards lifting community awareness about how dreadful such crimes are, and of the need for all of us to be more forthright and open in helping to stop it. The work of Hetty Johnston, whose Braveheart foundation and constant effort has steadily expanded awareness of the issue over the past 20 years, is one of the main reasons that the Royal Commission was established, and why community awareness is now very high. Bringing an end to the taboo is only the beginning, however, as Hetty’s work has shown. Braveheart and our educational and health institutions are now working hard to instil in children defence mechanisms or provide support when they are not successful. And we badly need to understand that the need is by no means restricted to the sort of historical crimes dealt with by the Commission. Right now, and into the future unless we can stamp it out, one in five children will experience some form of sexual abuse. Only a few weeks ago a man was arrested on a Mid North Coast beach over the online grooming of a young girl. Not that long ago a Port Macquarie man faced multiple charges concerning sexual abuse of several young boys across our region. The problem is right here, right now, and widespread. If you see or even suspect something please report it to the police, or child protection authorities.

Community is richer, cleaner LOCAL Charities Benefit From RVMs: Four local charities can now benefit from the Return and Earn scheme in the Port Macquarie electorate. Money can now be donated to local charities whenever people take their containers to any of the four local Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) in our area. If people choose to donate their 10 cents per container instead of collecting the money, they can support four very worthwhile organisations helping our local community. For the next three months the following charities can benefit from deposits to RVMs: • Disability support service - ACES RVM at Growers Market, Port Macquarie; • Port Macquarie Animal Welfare Service RVM at Settlement City, Port Macquarie; • Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise RVM at Innes Lake Shopping Centre; • Lake Cathie-Bonny Hills Lions Club – RVM at Lake Cathie Shopping Centre. Return and Earn is the largest litter reduction initiative to be introduced in NSW, and now there are more reasons for people to be involved. This program has been exceptionally popular with more than 3.8 million containers returned locally and a staggering 617 million containers returned in NSW. Most drink containers between 150ml and three litres are eligible for the 10c refund. Containers should be intact (not crushed or

broken) and have a readable barcode to be eligible.\For more information, including a full list of eligible drink containers, visit: www. returnandearn.org.au Record Funding For Public Libraries: Public libraries in NSW will be able to expand their collections, carry out major upgrade work and extend their services thanks to a record $60 million investment from the NSW Government. This funding will transform and modernise public libraries, especially those in regional areas, delivering key services and educational and cultural experiences across the entire State. For local residents, this is an investment in libraries that will provide for a wide range of community needs such as better access to collections, children’s services, public IT, connectivity, events and programs. I’m passionate about public libraries. They are at the heart of our communities because they are so important to people of all ages, from children to the elderly.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

I AM pleased that as part of our strategy to open new markets for local businesses keen to export and expand their export markets to create further job opportunities in the Australian economy, a new landmark trade agreement between Australia and Indonesia will be negotiated. We expect this agreement will open up new pathways and make Australian businesses more competitive within the Indonesian market and with other trading partners in the region. It will allow Australia to take advantage of Indonesia’s growing economy particularly in the agricultural and manufacturing industries. This will not only help local businesses to grow into overseas markets, but with business growth also comes the creation of more local job opportunities. I look forward to seeing how some of our local industries can take advantage of this trade deal. The agreement will help forge stronger economic ties with one of our major trading partners and provide businesses and investors with more access to Indonesia’s trillion-dollar economy. This will deliver greater certainty for thousands of Australian businesses, farmers and investors. It will also open new doors for Australian services industries including education, telecommunications, tourism, transport and health.

Crimson has a colourful past HAVE you ever heard of kermes and its relationship with crimson. I thought not. Kermes is a red dye derived from the dried bodies of the females of a scale insect in the genus kermes, primarily kermes vermilio. The kerme insects are native in the Mediterranean region and live on the sap of the kermes oak. They were used as a red dye by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The kermes dye is a rich red. Kermes is the pregnant female insect gathered in large quantities from a species of evergreen oak in southern Europe and northern Africa. It was used in the production of the colour crimson and at times in medicine. It is also known as the scarlet grain insect. It is also known as a kermes berry, or a grain or a kermes insect. It has even had a lake named after it. These insects were so plentiful that the dried bodies of these insects were ground up and they

produced the crimson effect. In 1616 Bacon in Sylva commented “the scarlet powder, they call kermes”. The colour sometimes resembles purple. But I set out to write about crimson. Eliezer Edwards in his Dictionary of Words, Facts and Phrases, said carmine came from kermes, “the dried bodies of European insects, somewhat similar to the Mexican cochineal insect. They produce a scarlet dye almost equa1 to true cochineal.” Craig Carver, writing in A History Of English In Its Own Words, said vermilion and crimson both were originally made from

kermes made from the oldest-known red dye, which was later found to be inferior to a dye made from cochineal. John Ayto, writing in Dictionary of Word Origins, said kerme came from Arabid qirmaz, which passed into English via old Spanish as cremisin. Crimson is a deep red, almost purple. Shakespeare had a go at it, when he wrote in Julius Caesar in 1601: “Here the hunters stand, crimson’d in thy lethee.” Crimson was at first used in dying fine cloth and velvet, with which this shade of red was first used in English. Crimson was also used to describe blushing. In 1805, Robert Southey wrote: “See his cheek. How it hath crimson’d at the unworthy thought.” Crimson gave way to other words. They were crimsoning, crimsonish and crimsonis, together with a lot of other words. These days, crimson is produced by synthetic means. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Sasha steps into the spotlight

I N V I T A T I O N

Sasha Davies, far right, in a school production, will soon be off to Sydney to further her drama studies on just one thing either, she’s right across the board. She’s been in school musicals for the last two years, she does monologues, and outside of school she’s part of Theatre Oz in Port. “The arts is something that helps kids right across the spectrum as well. When they get self confidence in being able to stand up on a stage, they also have the confidence to then do public speaking, to stand up in front of their peers.

“So there’s those soft skills that complete a child just by doing drama as well. Getting in front of the class and public speaking is one of the most nerve-wracking things you can do.” To see Sasha Davies in action visit https:// vimeo.com/283839894/522420d2e4 To find out more about the State Drama Ensemble visit www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/statedrama-ensemble

A LOCAL drama student is about to walk into the spotlight in Sydney. Sasha Davies, a year 9 student from Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus, has been selected for the State Drama Ensemble. She was one of 24 students selected out of over 100 applicants from across New South Wales to attend a prestigious drama workshop. “Like a lot of actors, Sasha is an introvert,” said Leanne Jeffery, Community Liaison Officer at Hastings Secondary College. “She’s quiet, but when she gets on stage she is extraordinary and really gets into character. “What we find with a lot of kids who are a little bit shy is they become their own persona when they are acting. Sasha is also quite a humble girl and we are all really proud of her.” The State Drama Ensemble will be held at the Seymour Centre in Sydney on October 25 and 26. Students took part in the application process by writing a 2-3 minute monologue on a topic of their choice. The workshop provides students from years 9, 10, and 11 the opportunity to develop a work for a performance at the NSW Public Schools State Drama Festival. “They write their own scripts and then they have to deliver it and those videos then go to the Arts Unit in New South Wales,” explains Leanne. “They are then judged from the applicants and they choose 24 people who go through to the ensemble, a two-week workshop in the September school holidays. “Here students learn artistic techniques and get to hang out with peers across the country who all do drama.” Sasha is only 15 years old and already has a world of options open for her future. “She’s not quite sure what she wants to do after school but she loves to perform and is very good at it,” Leanne said. “She’s not one of these kids who focus

The Reds Quintet of Glenn Moore (trumpet), Jock Garven (saxophone), Bob Barnett (piano and vocals), Rod Ward (bass) and Andrew Harrison (drums and vocals) will be teaming up with the Hastings Choristers

Choristers ‘Jazz it up’

THE Hastings Choristers are Jazzin’ It Up for their latest concert. Audiences usually enjoy the traditional repertoire that the Hastings Choristers present, but they can expect something a little different for the September performance. “Although performing many classical bigbook works in a variety of languages, the choir also revels in pop jazz folk idiom and also comedic performances such as ‘Goslings’,” said Robyn Ryan, the choristers’ Musical Director. “We have taken great delight this year in seeing audiences grow, as choral music becomes very popular in our Hastings area.” The concert on September 20, ‘Jazzin’ It Up’, will bring light, bright, jazzy music while also including old favourites such as ‘Danny Boy’ and other harmonious renditions of songs from many styles and eras. In addition, The Choristers are teaming up with a jazz band, Reds Quintet, in this concert. The Reds Quintet have been a fixture at the Bago Vineyards jazz days for over 20 years, and at Jazz Sundays at Panthers and the Westport Club. The Reds Quintet consists of Glenn Moore (trumpet), Jock Garven (saxophone), Bob Barnett (piano and vocals), Rod Ward (bass) and Andrew Harrison (drums and vocals). While the emphasis is always on jazz, audiences can expect to hear a wide range of styles and the band also write most of their own arrangements which gives an original and refreshing feel to the music. “Reds is really looking forward to working

with the Hastings Choristers once more,” said Glenn Moore, band leader. “We will be presenting some of our favourite pieces, including a Miles Davis set from the ‘Kind Of Blue’ album, and a couple of great vocal pieces featuring Andrew and Bob.” Reds will also be accompanying the Choristers in a final set of songs arranged especially for the concert. The audience can also expect some solo performances by talented young locals, including Francesca Plentinger, Greg Mitchell and Hugo Bittar. These Year 10 students will wow the audience with a variety of numbers such as ‘Fix You’, ‘Yesterday’ and ‘Mr Cellophane’, while Hastings Choristers’ popular female ensemble ‘Cantabile’ will also be featuring in the concert. The concert will be held in the new Cape Ballroom at Sails Resort in Port Macquarie on September 20 from 6.30pm until 8pm. This is a great opportunity for patrons to see the new ballroom at Sails and also buy drinks and food from the bar to enjoy during the concert. Come along, bring your friends, get a peek at Sails’ beautiful new venue, have a wine, and enjoy a real toe-tapping night of wonderful music and fun. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for school students, which can be purchased at the Glasshouse Box Office by calling 65818888 or purchase tickets at the door on the night of the concert.

grown in the region in both shade houses and hot houses. The Camden Haven Orchid Society has been around for over 27 years and with 30 years of orchid growing experience, John knows orchids. “Someone gave me an orchid and it started breaking up so I went down to the local nursery and bought a book on how to grow them,” said John. “Now we have orchid societies where you can learn all those great things. “Here on the Mid North Coast there’s species of orchids that grow up in the hinterlands along creek banks and up the roots of trees. I grow my orchids at home in a shade house.” The two-day Spring Show will take place on Saturday and Sunday September 8 and 9 at the Laurieton United Services Club. All exhibits at the show will be judged by judges appointed by the Orchid Society of New South Wales with awards being presented on Sunday at 3pm by a board member from the Laurieton United Services Club. This is the time of year for the flowering of Cattleya, Cymbidium, Lycaste, Softcane Dendrobiums, exotic orchids from Africa and especially Australian Native Dendrobium Speciosum (rock orchids) and Kingianum orchids in vivid white, red, green, yellow and combinations of colours. There will be 13 classes exhibited with 69 sub-sections. The show will be open to the public on Saturday September 8 from 10am to 4pm and Sunday September 9 from 9.30am to 3pm. Potting demonstrations will be conducted on both days at 11am by Allan Wallace on Saturday and Lloyd Edwards on the Sunday. Entry will be by donation to the Laurieton Bush Fire services. The Show Marshalls will be Allan Barnes and Richard Murray.

AS more people move towards apartment-style living, less people are growing orchids. After two very successful summer and winter shows, the Camden Haven Orchid Society will be holding their Spring Show this weekend, where members can demonstrate how to grow orchids in any home. “In our society there are only one or two members who actually work and aren’t retired,” said John Matthews, Secretary of the Camden Haven Orchid Society. “But I think that orchid growing is something that’s really beneficial for younger people. “Unfortunately over the years I think a lot of people, particularly in Sydney, have moved to high rise-apartment living and they think they can’t grow orchids there. But you actually can grow them if you’ve got a balcony with nice light.” The Spring Show is the perfect opportunity to see the stunning orchids, bromeliads and foliage plants exhibited by orchid enthusiasts from the Mid-North Coast area, while also picking up some expert growing tips. “If you are growing your orchids on a balcony, you don’t want the hot sun in summer beaming down on them,” explains John. “Usually a lot of people grow them in 50% shade cloth, which is just filtering the light. “They also like the early morning sun and to be watered in the morning. Some people grow them in pots in bark and some have got them growing in their backyard on a tree. A lot of them don’t like a lot of water on their roots either, they need a lot of oxygen on them and over watering will rot their roots.” The public will be able to check out the society sales table for orchids, bromeliads, foliage plants and accessories together with growing notes on each genera. Members of the society will also be available to give advice on plants suitable to be

Cleaning up KEEPING our region clean, tidy and free of litter will continue to be a high priority for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, spurred on by recent news that statewide litter volumes have reduced by 37% since 2013. While initiatives such as ‘Return & Earn’ have contributed greatly to this reduction, Council is encouraging our community to keep up the good work locally by putting rubbish in the right bin. Group Manager Maria Doherty said as a coastal region, it is critical our waste ends up in the bin so it doesn’t end up in our waterways. “Marine litter consists of a wide range of materials including fishing line, plastic, metal, wood, rubber, glass and paper,” said Ms Doherty. “We don’t want this stuff floating around our beaches, endangering our precious wildlife or destroying the things we love about our region. “In the last 12 months, Council has issued more than 138 fines to irresponsible litterers, and we will be continuing with this effort to ensure our region stays litter-free,” Ms Doherty said.

Futsal team scores respect

HAVING a disability isn’t holding back local futsal players from competing in mainstream competitions. The All Abilities Futsal team has had 5 of their players recently join the Monday night mixed social competition. “We have our All Abilities Program on a Thursday where we have about 12 participants, and I just asked them flat out whether they would like to put a team together for the mixed social competition,” explains Chris Whitfield, All Abilities Futsal Program Manager. “They all just jumped at the opportunity.” The team of five players and two carers, including Chris, are not only enjoying the new competition, but are also coming 7th out of 16 teams. “They are going above and beyond what a lot of people were expecting of them,” Chris said. “And they are having so much fun doing it.” There is now talk of the AAF team playing other teams interstate, which requires some much-needed fundraising. “We are looking at fundraising at the moment to get the guys some uniforms,” said Chris. “They absolutely love it and this competition is really setting the bar for inclusiveness. “For some of them, when they were younger, they were actually excluded from playing a lot of mainstream sports, specifically soccer and football. So they were left behind in a lot of ways. “This has given them the opportunity

Players from the AAF Monday night competition to prove to people that they can do it and it’s really the first opportunity they’ve been offered to actually go out there and have a crack at it. “Everyone from Port Macquarie Futsal has been so supportive and the other teams that play them have said how much fun it is playing them because they’ve all got smiles on their faces. “It takes it back to what sports is about – having a bit of fun. It’s been nothing but positive feedback from everyone.” Alistair Flower from the Settlers Inn has given the Futsal team a venue to hold a

fundraising event from 7pm on Saturday, October 13. There will be a giant raffle, a karaoke machine, food, and drink. The theme is ‘dress as your favourite sports star’. Come along, have some fun, and support your local Futsal team. Chris would also like to thank The Game Over Café at the Port Macquarie Sports Stadium for their continued support and sponsorship throughout the season. For more information and updates of the fundraising event visit the All Abilities Futsal Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ AAFutsal/

Gusty start for Port Sailors

THE first race of the 2018-2019 season was held on Sunday by the Port Macquarie Sailing Club in a reasonably gusty Southerly, starting at the top of the tide which then started to run out as the race progressed. The cool, gusty conditions kept some boats off the water combined with others not yet ready for the start of the season and it being Father’s Day. The new digital display on the clubhouse was excellent for the starting countdown, but still has a few other small glitches to iron out. With a lot of bias on the start line, Frank O’Rourke on Dino thought he had been OCS (On Course Side – broken the start), so went back and re-started to be sure. This let Jack Corthals on Harpic get a great start, avoid a bunch-up in a wind hole at the B mark, and bolt away down the course in the stiff breeze. Rob Barwick on Drift got caught in the hole

Frank O’Rourke who won the catamaran division on yardstick with most of the fleet. Dino hunted down the other 2 boats and took the catamaran yardstick win ahead of Harpic. Drift capsized on the 2nd lap, and after a lengthy recovery, retired as the

CLASSIFICATION:

gusts increased. Simon and Elsa Gandy and Caitlyn Hicks in Voyager put in a solid performance in the monohull division to take the yardstick win. Steve Bohlsen and Ed Molony in Splash Dance broke a bobstay fitting which then broke the spinnaker pole shortly after their first spinnaker set, forcing them to return to the beach to clear the wreckage before continuing the race without the spinnaker, but still allowing them to get a 2nd, only 92 seconds ahead of Stuart Symons in Britannia, who was in turn followed by Jane Cooper and Steve Couch in Jupiter. Next Weekend is our first double header of the season. Race 2 of the spring series will start at 11am, then there will be a BBQ lunch followed by the first race of the Club Championship starting at 1pm. Kelly Miller will be on duty for both races.

Sports awards date looms THE home straight is on the horizon for the Port Macquarie Hastings Sports Awards when applications close on Sunday, September 30. One sportsperson who loves pounding the home straight is 14-year-old sprint athlete, Dylan De Domizio. Dylan captured the attention of the judges for the Sports Awards last year when he was selected as the John Patrick Isuzu Ute Junior Sportsperson of the Year – Primary School. Dylan has won a swathe of medals and broken many records in his favourite events – 100m, 200m and long jump, as well as breaking the records for the 400m, 800m and 1500m for his school, Mackillop College. Joining Little Athletics as a three-year-old soon paid off, but Dylan credits a lot of his success to the ongoing coaching offered by Wayne Whealey an accredited Level 4 coach who offers local school athletes his time after school. “Wayne fine tunes everything,” Dylan remarked of his mentor. “There can be at least 10, or up to 20 he assists four days of the week.” Once again, Dylan has blitzed his competition at the Mackillop Athletics Carnival in June and is working hard toward the All Schools State Meet in October, where last year he came second in the 200m, second in the long jump and fourth in the 100m. This was surpassed with a gold medal in the All Marlene Davar, Mavis Collins. Second place Reta Maguire, Jan McFarlane, Shirley Jones with 44 pts. Third place Gaylene Fielding, Robyn Cooke, Marie Horan with 43 pts. N.T.P. sponsored by PMQ pro shop - Effie Blueming 9th hole.

Wauchope Men’s Veterans

A CHALLENGING day for 125 players at the Wauchope Men’s Veteran Golf Club recently where the game was “best 3 of 4 + Single Stableford”. Our sponsors were the Alex Robinson Estate (best 3 of 4) and Charles Langham and Victor Riley (single Stableford). Some great scores were achieved at all levels, teams and individual players. In the teams event the winners were: Dennis Hughes, Rod Allen, Bill Dixon and Bill Studeman, 129 pts. Runners up were John Singleton, Terry Seach, Warren Perry, Garry Walker, 128pts. In third place was Bernie Stoezer, Bill Jordan, Ian Witt, Robert Toone. 124 pts. In fourth place was Tony Ward, Derek Hall, David Symons also with 124 pts on a c/b. In the single event the winners were: Division 1. Russell Grunsell 39 pts, runner up Bob Maggs, 38 pts, third place Ian Bain 37 pts. Division 2. Gary Murrell 44pts, runner up Alan Brooke 41 pts, third place Ken Gallie 40 pts. Division 3. David Martin 41 pts, runner up Rex Schrubb, third place Charles Langham. Nearest the pin comp at the 4th hole in Div 1 went to Alan Lynch 2.35m, Div 2 went to Don Tunbridge .98m and div 3 was won by Robert Toone .54m. At the 18th hole div 1 went to Gary Duncan 3.47m, div 2 was won by Fred Bridge 1.82m and Div 3 was won by Charles Langham 1.82m. At the 7th hole, nearest across the field was won by Gary Walker 0.84m. In the ball rundown, balls went to 7 teams or 27 players who each receive a bonus ball. Next week Thursday golf is on Tuesday followed by WOG on September 6 & 7.Back to normal routine the following week.

Schools Nationals for the 4x100m relay and a fourth in the long jump. “Dylan competes all the time in Sydney but affordability is an issue,” says Dylan’s mother, Sherrie De Domizio. “But we just make it work and the money Dylan won last year went into the bank to put toward the costs of athletic meets. It cost $3000 to compete in Adelaide last year at the Nationals and unfortunately there is no North Coast Academy support for athletics.” The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise has been organising the Port Macquarie Hastings Sports Awards for 18 years. Recent partnering with Port Macquarie Hastings Council has led to an opportunity to combine the awards with the selection of the Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship. “With $7,000 in prizes donated by local businesses and awarded to local athletes, the recognition and prizemoney goes a little way to help them achieve their sporting dreams, and that is our aim with these awards,” says President, Malcolm McNeil. Mr McNeil also wishes to remind individuals and teams that nominations close Sunday, September 30, and that they need to be made online at http://sunrise-rotary.org.au/ sportsawards/ There are eight highly sought after categories and a link to apply for the Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship.

No certainties in NRL finals The only question over the “Rabbits is, will they play to their potential? If they do, they have the edge on every other team in the comp.

WELCOME to one of the most even NRL finals series in memory. The reality is, any of the eight teams in this year’s finals could take out the trophy. For some, their recent form has not been great, but with the same lineup they were contenders during some stage of this season. The bookies have the Roosters ($3.40), Storm ($4.50) and Rabbitohs ($4.75) as the main contenders for the title. However all three have suffered surprise losses in recent weeks. They are far from unbeatable. The positive from this of course is a very open finals with plenty of fans with high hopes. Storm v Rabbitohs (Friday, September 7, 7.40pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): If you thought it was tough picking a winner during the season proper, well things just got a whole lot tougher. The only consistency amid the NRL teams this season has been their inconsistency. Even the mighty Storm stumbled in the shadows of the finish line last weekend going down to the Panthers. The bookies have the Storm as slight favourites ($1.74 - $2.10) early, but this is likely to be very close. The Storm are at home, however certainly look slightly more vulnerable than in previous years without Cronk steering the ship. The only question over the Rabbits is, will they play to their potential? If they do, they have the edge on every other team in the comp. However the Storm have the discipline. So, as always, it comes down to which team is mentally ready. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Panthers v Warriors (Saturday, September 7, 5.30pm, ANZ Stadium,

Sydney): Talking about consistency, here are two teams who have struggled with that in the latter stages of this season. Both Penrith and the Warriors started well and were among the frontrunners before faltering. Both have premiership credentials when at their best. The Panthers surprised most fans with their win over the Storm last weekend. The Warriors had a solid win over the Raiders. Again, the bookies have the ‘home’ team marginally in front. However, just a couple of weeks ago – Round 24 – the NZ team had a comprehensive win over the Panthers. Of course a big reason for the Panthers’ return to form last weekend was the fact that veteran playmaker James Maloney was back. He will play a big role this weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Roosters v Sharks (Saturday, September 7, 7.40pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): The Roosters snuck into top spot with their big win last weekend over wooden spooners, the Eels. However this task will be a lot tougher. The Sharks have gone under the radar most of the year and have come into the finals in winning

form – four wins from their final four outings. They also have a side of finals-hardened veterans. The last time these two teams met was way back in round five, with the Roosters taking the points, but there has been plenty of water under the bridge since then. The Roosters are solid early favourites with the bookies - $1.55 - $2.45. They have also been the street-corner pick for the top trophy for a couple of months now and are the $3.40 premiership favourites with the bookies. Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Broncos v Dragons (Sunday, September 9, 4pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Brisbane have had a stuttering season, but have warmed to plenty with the very good form running into the finals – three from three. Despite the Wayne Bennett coaching sideshow the Queensland heavyweights seem to have gone into a siege mentality and are now premiership class. However this is an elimination final. So a slip will be costly. The Dragons’ recent run has been woeful, winning just three of nine. The mojo that had them as ladder leaders earlier in the season has all but

disappeared. They have one saving grace for this game. There is history between these clubs, which goes back a long way. They don’t like each other and clashes between the two invariably bring out the best in the Dragons. Their fans will be hoping, but the form line can’t be ignored.
