FAWNA phone ‘farce’ By SUE PATERICK

FAWNA has been saving native wildlife in the Mid North Coast region for almost 30 years, but on September 1 its effective operations were thrown into chaos when Telstra unexpectedly cut off the remote diversion phone facility. The number to call if you find an injured native animal or bird is still 65814141, but for FAWNA’s 140 trained and authorised volunteers redirecting the number to their home phone has become a nightmare.

According to FAWNA President Meredith Ryan, the remote diversion phone system was easy. It allowed volunteers to simply dial in and redirect the line to their home phone when it was their turn on shift. These dedicated volunteers work from their own homes to help injured, orphaned and ill wildlife. Their goal is to treat all these creatures, great and small, so they recover and can be released back into the wild. • Continued Page 3

FAWNA still on hold! Native animals innocent victims

A Southern Boobook owl orphan that was rescued and raised by FAWNA and then successfully released back into its home territory According to Meredith, its parents could be still feeding it and the baby bird could be on the point of fledging and flying away. The drought is also causing problems for wildlife. Meredith asks us not to feed native animals or birds though just to leave out some water for them. FAWNA can always use more animal-loving volunteers and its next induction will be at Johns River Hall on Saturday October 6. Full information and booking details are on www.fawna.org.au

I think it was “really poor of Telstra not to inform FAWNA properly and well in advance of the cut-off date.

• From Page 1 If need be, volunteers and vets also help to humanely end a creature’s life if it can’t be saved. This wonderful organisation covers 18,000 square kilometres from the Port MacquarieHastings Shire to the Macleay Valley, MidCoast Taree region and Dungog. So to have a problem with FAWNA’s wildlife rescue phone system is a catastrophe, especially considering spring and summer is the organisation’s busiest time of year. In the last financial year from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018, the remote diversion phone number took 11,448 calls to rescue injured or orphaned wildlife and over 3500 creatures went through FAWNA’s system. “This phone situation has hit us for six,” Meredith admitted. After frantic discussions with Telstra staff in the Philippines, she discovered the remote diversion phone line was cut off because it was not compatible with National Broadband Network (NBN) Technology. Telstra explained to her that FAWNA was informed of the cut-off date in its last phone bill on August 10. When she investigated Meredith found the information at the bottom of the last page. “We just didn’t get the message but even if we did there wasn’t enough time to get another system in place,” she said. “I think it was really poor of Telstra not to inform FAWNA properly and well in advance of the cut-off date.” The irony is that in order to fix the phone issue FAWNA has to use NBN, and it could take up to 10 weeks and will be double the cost. “It’s like the behemoth running over the minnow,” Meredith said. To get the phone lines diverted at the moment requires ringing the Philippines three times a day. Meredith hopes Telstra staff on this distant island can transfer any relevant phone calls back to FAWNA in Australia. FAWNA is unable to use the National Parks and Wildlife office because it is not manned 24 hours per day. “So it has been a disaster,” Meredith said. FAWNA has engaged the help of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman and urges anyone who finds an injured, orphaned or sick native animal or bird to contact 65814141. Given it is the beginning of spring, Meredith urges us all to be careful when driving at dawn and dusk because kangaroos and wallabies come down to the roadside to nibble new grass shoots. She also advised us not to pick a baby bird up off the ground but to seek advice from FAWNA first.

Measles on the move LOCAL health authorities have alerted doctors and emergency departments of the possibility of measles cases presenting and is again asking people to watch for symptoms, after four confirmed cases in the Coffs HarbourWoolgoolga area. A further suspected case in an infant is being investigated. The cases occurred after two unvaccinated school-aged children returned from an overseas holiday with the disease and infected two classmates. Three of the four primary school-aged children are unvaccinated. Director of North Coast Public Health Unit, Paul Corben said other cases may emerge as measles – which is spread in the air through coughing or sneezing – is highly infectious among people not fully immunised. “I urge parents to ensure that their children are fully immunised to protect them and others in the community against infectious diseases. Infants under 12 months of age are particularly vulnerable to measles as they are too young to be vaccinated,” Mr Corben said. “Despite the Coffs Harbour area having a high vaccination rate of 93 per cent of five year olds fully vaccinated, we have taken the precaution, under recent state legislation, of excluding 13 children from attending school who are not vaccinated or have not received the full course of two doses of measles-mumpsrubella vaccine.” Mr Corben said the Local Health District’s public health unit is contacting people known to have been in contact with these cases. Anyone in the Coffs Harbour-Woolgoolga area who is not vaccinated against measles should be alert to symptoms, particularly those who were in Woolgoolga on August 28 or in the Coffs Harbour central business district on August 29 or 30, 2018. As the investigation is ongoing, other places and times of potential exposure may be identified. “The time from exposure to the disease and the onset of symptoms is typically about 10 days but can be as long as 18 days so people should be alert to symptoms until 17 September,” Mr Corben said. Measles symptoms include fever, sore eyes and a cough followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash spreading from the head and neck to the rest of the body. Mr Corben said along with infants, young adults are also most likely to be susceptible to measles. “People in the 20 to 40-year age bracket may have missed out on the full vaccination program for measles – as it was changed during the 1990s to include a second dose with a national school-based catch up – and mistakenly believe they are protected against the disease. If you are concerned you may be at risk of measles, phone the North Coast Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055.

Thanks for helping out

THANK YOU NSW communities. It has been fantastic to see individuals, local communities and businesses united to tackle one of the worst droughts on record. There’s one thing that unites us when there’s a crisis. Australians want to dig in and help. We would like to thank everyone across the state who has taken time to support farmers, their families and others in our local communities in this terrible drought. Recently in some areas of New South Wales, there has been a little rain, though it has hardly wet the surface. It is going to be a long, hard road ahead for farmers and our rural communities, so it’s uplifting to see so many people sticking together and lending a hand through these tough times. While droughts place emotional strains on people who rely on the land to make a living, farmers have been telling our volunteers that it means the world to them that so many Australians want to help out. Drought-affected farmers are showing remarkable strength, coping with determination in the face of huge hardships. Stop scare-mongering

THE climate change debate is raising its ugly head again with Harry Creamer’s long letter espousing the virtues of clean energy. ‘Now is the time for change’, 23/8/18. We have solar panels, evacuated tubes, water tank, etc at my home so I am not against solar energy boosting the grid and saving energy wherever possible, however it is a pipe dream to imagine creating 28,000 jobs from renewables by 2030. It should be clear by now that renewable energy cannot produce enough base load electricity for large cities and country communities. We need coal-fired power stations for that. The scare mongering of the Climate Change crowd should stop. Lesley Chapman

much an hour do we pay these people? Is this the best sitting members can come up with on behalf of the people who elected them in? I for one am sick and tired of seeing the elected members of our government wasting taxpayers time and money while they continue to produce substandard circus acts instead of actually managing the country with the best interests of all citizens of our country. Completely over it! I know there are some very hard-working members (state and federal) who continue to do the best they can for their electorates and hopefully for the country as a whole. Unfortunately, no matter how hard they work – it has got to the point where all politicians have been lumped in the same basket. How can the Australian Government expect the people to support them to move forward when they couldn’t manage, quite frankly, their way out of a paper bag, a piss up in a pub or a whore in a brothel! Enough is enough! The government, to be fair to all citizens of Australia should put a stop to this nonsense, pack up their egos, bad manners and pre-pubescent behaviour and call a Federal Election NOW! We are spending truckloads on by-elections and those seats will all have to be recontested at the election next year – let’s not prolong the pain and waste more money. Just do it! MPs worthy of their positions will retain their seats. Those who aren’t worthy, won’t. That simple! We may end up right where we started, with the same government – I highly doubt it, but at least the people will have had their say. It’s not rocket science; its common sense!

TO all the staff that work in aged care and disability areas of our region. Without you our needy just live in loneliness. Everyone, go visit our elderly even if you don’t know them. Take your pets - they would love to see them (some places allow).

Thumbs Down TO the traffic light controller in Port Macquarie. The person who makes life that little bit more annoying. At least we can have a rest waiting for the slow changing lights to change. Seems some directions get preferential treatment.

Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up

TO the doctors and staff at Port Macquarie Base Hospital Emergency who were so efficient and caring when I broke my ankle recently on Kenny Walk.

TO Camden Haven Medical Centre and all of their staff, who went the extra mile to make sure I was safe when I knew I wasn’t. They made me feel safe. Mental health is a big issue for some of us, and I want to anonymously say thank you.

THE popcorn business has got to be going through the roof! Just three short weeks ago the country gained a new prime minister – we still don’t know ‘why’ and it looks like the ‘how’ might just come back to bite the Liberal Party on the bum. Big time! I had hoped that a parliamentary break may have given some of our federal members and leaders the time to reflect on their appalling behaviour and come back with an attitude readjustment of some sort. Yeah right! Pigs might fly! Speaking of pigs, our new Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, better known as ScoMo, labelled the antics of his Liberal Party during the spill change week as The Muppet Show. To be precise – “PM Scott Morrison says the ‘curtain has come down on the Muppet Show’ and a new curtain has come up.” I would agree with him except it’s an insult to Jim Henderson the creator. The Muppet Show, in my opinion displays fantastic organisational and leadership skills has credibility, relevance, and is more connected to the people than our current government will ever be. Who would have thought? A frog and a pig! Monday was D-day for ScoMo – his first day in parliament as sitting Prime Minister facing question time. What a day! Greenpeace activists installed a banner with a picture of ScoMo holding the piece of coal he carted into Parliament a couple of months back with the words ‘keep your hand off it’ between flagpoles outside Parliament House to protest his energy and climate change policies. I’m not a Greenie – but it was a legitimate and clever peaceful protest. The slogan is great! Apparently, the ministers were also treated to hear Labor MP Julian Hill reciting his cringeworthy rendition of the Muppet Show theme song on their arrival. Cringeworthy is a complete understatement, I get the attempt at humour and the sentiment, but seriously? How

Local school about to turn 150! HUNTINGDON Public School, near Wauchope, is celebrating their 150th birthday. Past students, staff, and community members are invited to come along to the Huntingdon Open Day on Saturday, September 22, to celebrate its rich history. “We’d love to have all current and past members of our community come along to see the school as it is now and take a trip down memory lane,” said Sue Troth, Huntingdon Public School P&C member. “Mr John Goodger, who was the Principal from 1958-1960, now in his 80s will be travelling to Huntingdon for the day and we

Above: A Huntingdon school photo from 1891. Top right: Part of the school today. are hoping that many of his pupils as well as Mr Trotter’s and Mr Fuhrmann’s will be able to attend.” The occasion will see former students and staff travelling from as far as Sydney. Sue says the day will be a wonderful opportunity for a reunion with school friends and teachers as well as a great family fun day out. “There haven’t been many other schools in the area that have been around that long,” said Sue. “It’s interesting with the convicts settling in Port Macquarie because our records show that

this area has actually been established much earlier than a lot of other areas in New South Wales. “The school has changed significantly since it opened to its first students in 1868. Back then the teacher had to either row their boat across the Hastings River from Brombin, or walk, ride their horse or push bike – sometimes from Wauchope. Finally in the late 1940s the Principal, Mr McPhee, caused great excitement when he drove his first car to school, finally being able to put his pushbike back in the shed.” In the 150 years of operation the school has

had 23 Principals or Teachers in Charge, the longest serving being Mr Alf (Smacka) Trotter whose 30 year tenure ran from February, 1960, through to January, 1990. The school has certainly grown over the years, now consisting of three classrooms, an administration block, technology centre, covered lunch areas, a school hall and fabulous play equipment. There are currently 53 students who get to enjoy the beautiful, small, country school five days a week with their fabulous teachers. “The open day will give everyone a chance to appreciate the changes that have shaped this beautiful school,” Sue said. “There will be school tours, historical photos and displays, school yard games, a delicious assortment of homemade goodies for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea and most importantly, a chance for old friends and classmates to catch up. A short ceremony including cake cutting will be held after lunch.” Come along and catch up with some old schoolmates, delve into the rich history of the school, and celebrate 150 years with Huntingdon Public School on Saturday, September 22, from 10am to 4pm. The school is located at 2876 Oxley Highway, 10 mins west of Wauchope. If you have any questions about the day please call the school on 6585 6144 or email: huntingdon-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Pictured above and below some of the amazing timber that will be available at the annual Boutique Timbers auction at Rollands Plains Recreation Reserve

We’ll have the usual big buyers from Sydney and further afield as well as the small “hobby people who buy a bit of timber to make something for their grandkids

Timber auction nails major interest By BARBARA DYER IT’S on again – the annual Boutique Timbers auction at Rollands Plains Recreation Reserve when everything from knotty timber planks and colourful giant slabs, to hobby packs for whittlers will go under the hammer. Viewing the timbers will take place on Saturday and early Sunday before the first lot is offered to eager bidders at 10am on September 23. Rollands Plains Recreation Reserve is about 35km north west of Port Macquarie. Greg Ward from Boutique Timbers says 400 lots will be offered – from planks and slabs in multi colours and burls; thicknesses and lengths for use in creating anything from

massive slab tabletops to simple cheese platters. Last year some 97 per cent was sold. “We basically let it go, otherwise we have to take it back,” says Greg who organises the event with brother Mal. “We had 100 registered bidders and this year we’ll have the usual big buyers from Sydney and further afield as well as the small hobby people who buy a bit of timber to make something for their grandkids.” It will all be over in about four hours, says Greg.

“All things going as planned, we will sell two lots every 90 seconds,” he says. “It’s a fast auction.” It’s a community event, now in its fifth year, and brings buyers from as far away as Brisbane and down the south coast of NSW. Each year $4000 from the day is donated to the local showground and hall committee. The planning is well underway, with all timbers listed on the website, before 400 lots to be identified. “Some of the timber is ours, some is being

sold for other buyers so might have a reserve on it,” says Greg. “On the day, there will be a few grumbles when the bigger buyers push prices out of reach and get what they want, at any price. “That’s how an auction works though.” There is everything in every type of wood; from packs of 10 boards to beautiful big slabs; offcut packs for hobbyists and beautifully patterned pieces for woodturners to pick over. A lot of the commercial buyers are from interstate – Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Fine furniture-makers from Sydney and Brisbane make the annual pilgrimage knowing they are going to pick up some choice timbers for a fair price. Being in the wilderness, overheads are low, so prices are low. There is an air of excitement as buyers and browsers stand talking about the timbers; boards, burl slices, blackbutt, bluegum; crutch slabs, camphor legs, figured red cedar, natural edges, squares and turning planks. To get to the auction, turn off Pacific Highway at Telegraph Point and follow Rollands Plains Road 20km.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Next week Council will come together for our September meeting. It’s always a busy time leading into our monthly meetings, as we review the agenda, receive briefings from Council staff and have many conversations within our community on the items that are being put before us for discussion and decision. If you haven’t been to a Council meeting before, please come along and see your Council in action. I particularly encourage the younger members of our community to take an interest, you are our future community leaders and it would be a great way to get an idea of how local government works, and the role that the Mayor and Councillors play in community life.

I believe it’s important for our community to get involved, and that you ‘have your say’ on the many Council projects and services that are happening each and every day. And you don’t have to wait until there is formal process in place, you can contact us at any time to let us know what you think. There are many ways to do this… through our website, via email or letter, by calling us or dropping into one of our offices. It is your involvement that helps us continue to build an inclusive, connected and progressive community, and prioritise and deliver the things that you feel are important. We have a really big agenda before us at this month’s meeting, with lots of exciting community projects and important decisions to be considered. We’ll be voting on who will be our Deputy Mayor for the

pmhc.nsw.gov.au next 12 months, discussing the Bonny Hills Community Plan and considering how we will manage community markets into the future through a Draft Markets Policy. Other items include reviewing a new Coastal Koala Plan of Management, a Cultural Plan for the next four years and the future development of Kangaroo Park on the North Shore. It’s certainly going to be action-packed, with the meeting starting at 5.30pm next Wednesday 19 September in the Port Macquarie Council Chambers in Burrawan St… I hope you can make it. I also look forward to updating you next week on the outcomes of the meeting. Until then, Peta

Make sure you are fire ready By SUE PATERICK

“ Another vital

action is to have a fire survival plan that the whole family understands, as it will reduce the risk to you and your home

DESPITE a few days of welcome rain, the Rural Fire Service (RFS) message is still to be prepared for the upcoming summer bush fire season. To really enforce this message the RFS will hold over 600 events across NSW during its Get Ready Weekend on Saturday, September 22, and Sunday, September 23. According to Zone Manager for Lower North Coast, Superintendent Lachlann Ison, this annual event is held primarily to get the ‘be fire ready’ message out to the general community so they know what to do to prepare their properties and protect their families and animals this fire season. He said it was also an opportunity for communities to meet members of their local brigade. “We also hope some members of the public will want to join up after learning what the RFS does,” Superintendent Ison said. During the Get Ready Weekend the state’s local fire sheds will feature firefighting vehicle displays, sausage sizzles, information stands, children’s activities and workshops. A Ute and Boot Sale will also be held at the Dondingalong RFS during the Get Ready Weekend at its Pipers Creek Road fire shed on Saturday September 22 between 9am and 1pm. So if you have something to sell or want something to buy, come along and join in the fun while finding out about the local fire risk and learning just how easy it is to be prepared for a bush fire. The RFS says there are five simple steps to help you get ready. One is to trim any overhanging trees and shrubs around your home. Two is to mow your lawn and remove all cut grass.

Captain of the Dondingalong RFS Steve Sproule is looking forward to this year’s Get Ready Weekend and helping his local community be prepared for the upcoming bush fire season Three is to remove material that can burn around your home like door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves and outdoor furniture. Four is to clear and remove all debris and leaves from gutters. Five is to prepare a hose or hoses that can

stretch all around the house. According to the RFS website, taking these small actions now could make all the difference if a fire threatens your home. Another vital action is to have a fire survival plan that the whole family understands, as it will

reduce the risk to you and your home. The RFS believes that by working together with events like the Get Ready Weekend we can all help make our communities safer this bush fire season. Of course the drought has made the fire situation more dire and fire permits are required before any burning off. Superintendent Ison said fire permits were required until the end of March unless the region receives a major rainfall event in that time. “Recent rainfall events have been very patchy at best,” Superintendent Ison said. “The last decent rain recorded in Kempsey was in March this year.” To find out where and when your local RFS is holding their Get Ready Weekend go to http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/news-and-media/ get-ready2018

Funds available for club projects FUNDING Grants for Community Organisations: Community organisations looking to build new or upgrade current facilities are encouraged to apply for funding from the NSW Government’s Infrastructure Grants program. Applications can be submitted for sport and recreation, arts and culture, and emergency preparedness until September 24. This funding can make a real difference to the local community, either by providing new or improved sporting or cultural facilities, or by protecting local residents in emergency situations. This year will see the NSW Government complete its commitment to invest $50 million into community infrastructure projects across NSW in four years. The funding is provided through the Clubgrants Category 3 program, which receives a contribution from registered clubs’ gaming machine profits to benefit local communities. Funding ranges are $50,000 to $200,000 for arts and culture, $10,000 to $200,000 for emergency preparedness and $100,000 to $300,000 for sport and recreation. STATE MATTERS

With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie

Preparing for the Bushfire Season: With the summer season fast approaching, residents are being encouraged to have a plan in place as the bushfire season officially begins with more than a third of the state now entering the ‘Bushfire Danger Period’. While our dedicated firefighters will do everything they can to prepare and protect our community, it’s also important for residents to do what they can to prepare for the fire season and make sure they make or update their ‘Bush Fire Survival Plan’. People should also remember that embers can be blown a great distance ahead of a bush fire, travelling several streets and potentially igniting spot fires. So whether you live near bushland or not, it’s absolutely essential you plan ahead – and prepare your property by doing things like clearing gutters, maintaining gardens, and checking your garden hoses can reach all corners of your property.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

“BEWARE of what you wish for” is a commonsense warning to families and businesses on the Mid North Coast who genuinely think we should be speeding up the transition to renewable electricity. It is just a recipe for even higher power prices than we are enduring now, with very, very, little impact on global emissions. More renewables means more subsidies and that inevitably means higher prices. It is true, to be fair, that renewables are not the only thing driving our power prices up. Other big problems include over investment in the transmission lines from power stations to sub-stations and in the poles and wires that run down our streets and roads. Retailers have lifted their profit margins. The cost of gas for generation has risen. New Energy Minister Angus Taylor is acting to get these costs down, but one of the toughest challenges he faces is convincing many well-meaning people that a rush for more renewables is really just a recipe for even bigger bills. The plain fact is that you cannot double the wholesale price of power with subsidies for renewables and not see the cost of power for families and businesses keep going further through the roof.

Minutes keep groups ticking MOST organisations (dare I say all?) have secretaries. Those secretaries keep minutes of meetings, and probably many of them have no idea why minutes have their name. Clocks have minutes, and hours, and sometimes -- often in motels - the alarm goes off just when you don’t want it to, usually about 2am. Check the clocks before you go to bed. Anyway, this column isn’t about minutes of clocks. This column is about minutes of meetings. The word minute represents something in miniature. The idea is that the secretary takes down often the names of people there and the important decisions, subject to the organisation’s policies. The action of taking the minutes has been referred to as minutation, but you won’t see that word in many dictionaries. Minuteness is the quality of being extremely small. Some associated words are minuteless (not to be measured by minutes), minuted (recorded in a minute or note), minutely (every minute), minuter (one who writes minutes), minutie (a trifling detail), minutial (pertaining to details), minutious (dealing with minutes) and minutulous (very small). A minute is the 60th part of a unit. I have seen it used in reference to the word modern, such as

my

LAURIE BARBER

“up to the minute”. I have also seen it used as a moment in time - “the minute he walks through that door…” The town in which I live has signs on some posts, saying “three minutes to such and such”. Dictionaries might say a unit of something small, such as a coin of trifling value. They might also say an agreement of something or an understanding. The Macquarie Dictionary says the word, in plural, records the proceedings of a meeting. The word represents only the outline of the meeting, so the secretary, or the minute taker, records only the decisions taken and the other materials according to the direction of the organisation. Who spoke and what they said are almost never recorded. Stephen Murray-Smith said minutia was often found in the plural and meant very small or trifling details.

Eliezer Edwards in his 1901 dictionary said minutes of a meeting were so called because they were formally taken down in minute characters preparatory to being engrossed, that is written in large characters for preservation or record. Okay, that would have been worded differently today, but that was more than 100 years ago and our language is changing all the time. The first English dictionary, prepared in 1604, said of minutely “smally”. You can’t get much smaller than that. Wilfred Funk said minute meant small, “which gives us our minute, or 1440th part of a day”. John Ayto agreed but added that the minutes generally were a rough draft in small writing. He added that minute was a small unit of time, which English acquired from old French. Nigel Rees said the minutes were taken down in small writing “so they could be engrossed or put into larger writing later. I couldn’t understand that. Why would you put minutes in small writing so you could put them in larger writing later? I know that in my secretarial days I would write the minutes in longhand, then tear out the page and paste the page in the appropriate place later. It saved a lot of work and nobody ever complained. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Gaol exhibit a breakout success OVER 5,000 art lovers visited historic Trial Bay Gaol during its month-long Sculptures in the Gaol exhibition last month with about 1,500 attending the popular gala opening in early August. On Saturday, September 1, prizes valued at $3,000 were awarded to the winners of numerous categories that included sculpture, photography and group installations. A spokesperson for the National Parks and Wildlife (NPWS) said the results reflected the broad range of submissions. For large sculpture category winner, Kat Aktins, it was the first time she has created work for a sculpture exhibition. “I needed some mannequins to display the couture jewellery pieces I design and wanted something artistic, bold and beautiful with a touch of character, just like my jewellery,” she said. “I couldn’t find anything suitable in the market so I resolved to create my own mannequins using natural and recycled materials collected along Mid North Coast beaches.” Her artwork ‘Rhythm Hunters’ evolved from this original plan but it doubled in size, grew wings and became an entire work of art. The small sculpture category winner was Sam Hawkins for his piece entitled ‘Starving Eagle’. Sam has been entering artworks in Sculpture in the Gaol for a couple of years now and thinks this experience has given his sculptures new vigour. He also worked with children from Willawarrin Public School to help them design and build their own group installations. His teachings must have sparked the imagination of a number of budding artists because this small school’s artworks entitled ‘Enjoy Nature. Recycle’ won first prize in the Primary School category. About 24 artworks and artists received prizes and commendations at the Sculpture in

The Aussie Dragonflies in Italy

Dragonflies celebrate a memorable regatta THE Aussie Dragonflies have returned from a successful, and memorable, dragonboat regatta in Florence, Italy. The 39 breast cancer survivors and supporters recently took part in the International Breast Cancer Participatory Festival where they competed in the dragonboat racing section. “There were 123 teams representing 19 countries from around the world,” said Janet Kesby, spokesperson for the Aussie Dragonflies. “We won our group final race which was quite an achievement. We actually improved our time from four years ago, when we raced in Florida, by about 8 seconds and our coach Greg Jackson was very happy with us. “We are all breast cancer survivors. Everyone that competes in this festival has been diagnosed with breast cancer.” The Aussie Dragonflies are comprised of dragonboat paddlers from Ballina (Rainbow Dragons), Port Macquarie (Flamin’ Dragons) and the Camden Haven Dragons. Twenty paddlers, one sweep and one drummer competed in four races across the festival in July, with the times competitive for the five hundred metre races. The team may have an average age of 65, but that didn’t stop them from winning the Group Final in 2 minutes and 45 seconds. The Aussie Dragonflies were joined by teams from Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Spain who attended for the first time. Other countries represented were Canada, USA, Ireland, UK, Italy, Singapore, Taiwan and South Africa. Australia was represented by 18 teams. “Everyone is happy to be there and to be meeting each other,” said Janet. “We make friends at these events and because we all know we are breast cancer survivors … we feel closer. “There’s so many young women now that get it too, it makes me sad. But discovering dragonboating is really a positive thing. “I have a daughter who is a survivor too and she coordinated two teams from Canberra. So I travelled to Florence with her and then we did a holiday afterwards. “I was also fortunate enough to meet the man who started Dragonboat racing for breast cancer survivors, Dr John McKenzie. He’s such a humble, lovely man and what he has done for women with breast cancer is incredible.” Janet says The Sandy Smith Global Finale and Breast Cancer Survivor Flower Ceremony is something she will never forget. “On the final day one representative from each team takes part in The Sandy Smith Global Finale,” explains Janet. “All the women from each team were loaded into boats and they came down the course as an exhibition. They then all floated together to make a raft. So there was around 15 boats paddling and floating quietly down the river. “The rest of the competitors and supporters stood on the bank holding pink gerberas and then

The Dragonflies in action in Italy we threw the flowers into the water. It’s a special memorial for all those who have lost their battle with breast cancer and it’s quite an emotional moment for many of us. It brought many people to tears. “We’ve lost a few from our team.” Janet hopes that more women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer will join the team. “We hope to meet other ladies who might want to try and join us, and if they can’t exercise, they can meet us for lunches and get-togethers,” Janet said. “One of the ladies in our team is already saving her pennies for the next regatta in four years because she enjoyed the whole experience so much.” In Florence, as well as racing, the ladies dined in groups, explored the city, trained at Cascine Park on the River Arno, and paraded with all the teams across the Ponte Vecchio after gathering at Piazza Pitta then walking to the Piazza Signoria for the opening ceremony. At the closing ceremony, all paddlers and supporters received a medal. For more information about the International Breast Cancer Participatory Festival visit http:// www.florencebcs2018.org

Your SMSF is a long term plan towards providing for your retirement and much can happen during the lifetime of the SMSF including illness, incapacity or death of a member. Some issues to consider when putting in a contingency plan to deal with unexpected events can include; Death – Where do you want your super to go upon death. Given the introduction of the $1.6 million transfer balance cap, this means larger sums of money may need to leave the superannuation realms sooner than anticipated. You need to think carefully about who receives your super upon death to maximise the benefits for your beneficiaries. Also think about what legal tools will help direct your superannuation to where you want it to go. The rules of your SMSF are set out in your trust deed and other related documents and will determine the trustee structure upon death as well as how death benefits are to be handled by you and your fund. Divorce – Family law contains a number of options for superannuation to be split between a couple who separate or divorce. Your superannuation is treated separately to your other property, so specialist advice will be needed. Diminished capacity – Consider the consequences if you become unable to act as trustee (e.g., due to mental incapacity). You can appoint an enduring power of attorney to act in your place as trustee, if required. This is someone who can be trusted to handle your financial affairs and can be appointed as trustee of the SMSF. Funding the exiting of a member – How would your SMSF be affected if one or more of the fund members decided to exit the fund? For example, an SMSF heavily weighted in real estate may have to sell the asset, inject funds or introduce a new fund member to allow the exiting member to transfer out of the fund. Trustee Structure Having a corporate trustee will save time and money as there will be no requirement to change the ownership name on fund assets upon any member ceasing or exiting the fund due to any of the above scenarios. At Maven Advisors we provide services in all aspects of SMSF’s and can assist with planning for an unexpected event or reviewing your current strategies. If you would like to know more around a SMSF please contact our office to arrange a time to meet so that we can discuss your particular circumstances in more detail.

STRUCTURAL reforms are needed in the dairy industry to ensure local dairy farmers are not only sustainable, but also have the capacity to grow and flourish in future. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission previously identified market failure in the dairy industry and the sector has since come to a united position in response on the need for a mandatory code of conduct for the dairy industry. I’m delighted that Australian Dairy Farmers have reached a position to support development of a mandatory code of conduct to improve the bargaining power for Australian dairy farmers. I also support the proposal currently being canvassed of a temporary retail levy going directly to dairy farmers to allow the industry breathing space to undertake broader fundamental structural change to secure the long term viability of the industry both locally and across Australia. The current returns to dairy farmers are unsustainable and I believe both the processors and retailers have not only a moral obligation, but also a national interest obligation to ensure farmers in the dairy industry remain sustainable, particularly during challenging times.

Wauchope Miss Showgirl runner-up Jessica Prussing with five Wauchope CWA members who turn 80 in 2018 - the 80th anniversary of the branch. From left: June Dale, Gwen Taylor, Pam Kirby, Jessica Prussing, Win Secombe and Pam Dein THE Country Women’s Association (CWA) offer much more than just crafts and cooking. With the recent celebration of the Wauchope CWA’s 80th birthday, guests and members were reminded of what these women have done for the community over the last 80 years. “Some people think all we do is crafts and cooking, but actually we keep ourselves very busy,” said Janet Kesby, Secretary/Treasurer of CWA Wauchope, and a 45-year member of the organisation. “With the CWA I think a lot of us are mums and ex-teachers and we are very passionate about education. So we donate money to the schools every year and we also educate ourselves constantly. “Each year we study a country and this year we studied Poland. We also had an urban and environmentalist officer who came and did a talk for us. We are trying to share our skills and teach and learn, because that’s what life is – a learning experience. And some of us aren’t good cooks at all.” Sixty members and guests joined in on the birthday luncheon at the RSL Wauchope, including Port Macquarie-Hastings Deputy

Mayor Lisa Intemann, State MP Melinda Pavey, Lesley Olsen from the Wauchope show society, Jessica Prussing - Wauchope Show Showgirl runner up - and local entertainer Miriam Lattimore, along with the many other CWA branch members. “It was important for us to have local people attend the celebration because we want to keep things local and to help local people,” said Janet. “We’ve had some really long-standing members of the CWA including 96-year-old Lyn Hodgson who has given 64 years of service and 92-year-old Jean Geyer who has given 53 years of service. “We also celebrated the birthdays of five of our members, who are all turning 80 this year.” Members and guests enjoyed the live music, food, and fun games that looked back over the last 80 years. “We had trivia questions on the table which created a lot of fun – like what was the price of bread back in 1938,” said Janet. “So it got them all using their brain a bit. “As a surprise, 4 members of the branch presented a skit ‘George and Mary’, like the television classic ‘George and Mildred’,

CLASSIFICATION:

which created lots of laughs.” The ladies also raised $300 for Drought Relief through their raffle. Mrs Pam Dein, CWA Wauchope member sang ‘We’ll meet again’ as a finale to the celebration. “Thank you to all who contributed to the day, we have such a good team of ladies here,” said Janet. Although the Wauchope CWA celebrated 80 years of service, the focus is on the future. “Our Skillshare group is very successful,” Janet explains. “Four mentors taught at least 11 ladies the intricacies of crochet and knitting during six free lessons. “Now on a Monday we will be having free sewing lessons, including machine sewing and hand sewing. There will be mentors willing to share their skills and knowledge.” The free sewing lessons will take place on Mondays, for six weeks, starting this week from 10am at the CWA Rooms. All are welcome. Tough conditions for Port sailors SUNDAY was the Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s first double header for the season, with race 2 of the spring series and the 1st Club Championship race in the afternoon. The morning southerly breeze was extremely patchy, with more dead patches than breeze which, combined with a fast run-out tide, made racing almost impossible. The afternoon race was started with much trepidation, but the southerly picked up to a reasonable breeze to allow some good runs and a quick race in the sunny conditions. The start of the morning race was delayed while waiting for the wind to kick in, and finally a start countdown was commenced, only to see the light breeze die again. After a half hour struggle against the tide, Jack Corthals on Harpic finally got a big enough puff to be the first boat to get across the start line and around the course to take the yardstick win for the catamarans. A little while after Harpic finished, Rob Barwick on Drift also managed to get a puff to allow him to get around the course. Scott Witchard on Hummer never got to the start line in the frustrating conditions. If the catamarans had a frustrating morning, the monohulls had it even worse.

Lake Cathie Men

Wauchope Men

ON Friday morning 31 August Ken Ansley and Peter McLeod had the privilege of presenting a cheque on the club’s behalf (wrong bias contributions) to the Wauchope District Memorial Hospital. The nurses and staff do a magnificent job and the hospital’s Director of Nursing, Ann Bodill, wished Ken and Peter to pass on their heartfelt appreciation and said keep up the bad bowls. Wednesday’s afternoon club select triples eventually saw 24 players take to the green. The winners on the day with +15 were Dennis Simpson, Ian Hackney and Bernie Haggarty while the runners up were the dream team, Don Berry, Jim Hopcroft and Dave Carney with +10. Bernie and Dave certainly benefitted from being late call-ups. Friday’s nominated pairs once again saw 10 teams take to the greens. The winners with plus a lot and then some were John wells and Ken Ansley while the runners up with 1 shot less than a lot were Doug Donovan and Ray Houghton. At the weekend we saw the Travelling Bowlers make their long-anticipated trip to Woolgoolga Bowling Club. A great time was had by all and the club was most welcoming. Once again they were greatly relieved that all those that signed up returned and we thank John ‘Farmer’ Eggert for navigating the bus. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs at 1pm, single entries will also

Stuart Symons and Steve Couch in Jupiter managed to get around the course after well over an hour after the start time. The rest of the monohulls consisting of Simon and Dale Gandy and Paul in Voyager, Jane Cooper in Pineapple, Peter Nyberg, Jaiden Burke, and Peter in Britannia, and Tony Walker in Deep Purple just could not make headway against the tide to be able to get to the start line. Caitlyn Hicks also had a frustrating time going for a first sail in her boat Nesryn. The afternoon’s 1st Club Championship race for catamarans was sailed in a reasonable breeze, although the course was still short as there was much doubt that the breeze would kick in. Frank O’Rourke on Dino was first home on yardstick, followed by Tony Kuhn on Stella, Harpic, and Drift. The yardstick winner in the monohull division in the afternoon race was Terry Howard on Ratz, ahead of Jupiter, this time with Steve Couch on the helm, who in turn were only 11 seconds ahead of Pineapple, and finally, Britannia who now had Imogen Archer crewing for Peter Nyberg. Next Sunday is race 3 of the spring series starting at 1pm, and Dave Winter is rostered on duty.

6 ... but only 3 can win The Storm, Roosters and “Rabbitohs have gapped the Dragons, Panthers and Sharks in the shadows of the post the opening round of the finals, but that effort won’t be enough. Although Penrith have had solid moments during the season, before a dismal second half, nothing last weekend indicated they have made up enough ground on the ‘big three’. The Sharks are closer, but their loss to the Roosters last weekend also showed they are not in the same class as the comp favourites. The Sharks also are playing ‘busted’ with injury concerns over a number of players. As far as this match goes … the Sharks’ recent form indicates they will have too much power and oldschool experience for the Panthers. This game should be close, but again, it’s just a curtain-raiser for the main events. The bookies have the Sharks slightly ahead in the early market and that is how the game will go. Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Rabbitohs v Dragons (Saturday, September 15, 7.40pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Dragons will be the hard luck story of 2018. For much of the season they have been the front-runners, however struck quicksand over the final 10 rounds. Last weekend they hit back. Not only were they facing an in-form Broncos

THE NRL premiership race is down to three runners. Yes, there may be six teams still in the race, but the Storm, Roosters and Rabbitohs have gapped the Dragons, Panthers and Sharks in the shadows of the post. Last weekend confirmed what the bookies have been trumpeting - that the three heavyweights are well ahead. The only surprise from last weekend was the Dragons. And they too could have run into contention, but injuries will end their run this weekend. As explained below, the Panthers may have won, but there was nothing in that performance, and even less in recent weeks to indicate they can make any ground on the favourites. The Roosters showed why they are ahead in the betting with a solid win over the Sharks. They may have to do without Latrell Mitchell (judiciary concerns as YLI goes to press) and that will prove costly. Like the Storm, they have a week off. The Storm returned to juggernaut mode in pipping the Rabbits and the week off will soothe plenty of bruises. The Rabbits just need to minimise their injuries this weekend. If successful against the Dragons they meet the Roosters next weekend. The winner of Sharks v Panthers clash will take on the Storm. Sharks v Panthers (Friday, September 14, 7.40pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): It may sound cruel, but after one week of NRL finals footy, these two teams are just making up the numbers. As stated above, the Storm, Roosters and Rabbitohs have galloped ahead of the remaining teams with the finish post in sight. The Panthers may be coming off a win in

team – in Brisbane – they were also up against a tirade from the critics, who have a feast every time the Dragons promise, but fail to deliver. Well, they certainly delivered against the Broncos, giving them a 48-18 lesson in how to play finals footy. The home crowd was left stunned. However for St George Illawarra, the win came at a devastating cost. Key players Gareth Widdop and Jack De Belin both came into the game with injury concerns. Both played major roles in the victory, but both left the field before full time after aggravating their injuries and are unlikely to be back in 2018. Those injuries – added to an already significant injury list – will be just too heavy a burden for the Dragons to carry against the Rabbits. South Sydney were as close to beating the Storm as the score line indicated (29-28) and should have too many fit legs for the Dragons. The Rabbits have premiership power, speed and skill. The Dragons will fight, but they face an opponent that they would find formidable on their best day, let alone when they are down on their best troops. Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs
